NOTE: the Jewish Tribal Review HAS GONE dormant for the summer. Thanks to everyone who contributes information to us. And (thanks to reader contributions) the web site will remain online throughout the summer, but nothing will added to it -- at least until the Fall. At that point, we'll evaluate what direction this web site should take. Should we continue posting news material? (If people aren't convinced by excerpts from 7,200 posted articles and another 10,000 citations from When Victims Rule, will another 10 million citations of evidence matter?) You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Should we instead concentrate on original articles and let this site become more of an intellectual hobby? Or should we concentrate entirely upon finding a broader readership for what already exists here? In the face of massive public ignorance and indifference and our perpetual lack of resources (other than the truth), and the enormous amount of time and work involved in all this, is the web site really worth while? We don't know the answers to these questions. We'll make decisions about its future down the line.

"In the months ahead, the state Senate Committee on Education will consider a bill that pretends to strike a blow for intellectual honesty, truth and freedom, but in reality poses a profound threat to academic freedom in the United States. Peddled under the benign name "An Academic Bill of Rights," SB 5 is in fact part of a wide assault on universities, professors and teaching across the country. Similar bills are pending in more than a dozen state legislatures and at the federal level, all calling for government intrusion into pedagogical matters, such as text assignments and course syllabuses, that neither legislators nor bureaucrats are competent to address. The language of the California bill -- which was blocked in committee last week but will be reconsidered later in the legislative session -- is extraordinarily disingenuous, even Orwellian. Declaring that "free inquiry and free speech are indispensable" in "the pursuit of truth," it argues that "intellectual independence means the protection of students from the imposition of any orthodoxy of a political, religious or ideological nature." Professors should "not take unfair advantage of their position of power over a student by indoctrinating him or her with the teacher's own opinions before a student has had an opportunity fairly to examine other opinions upon the matters in question." To protect students from what one might (mistakenly) suppose to be an epidemic of indoctrination, the bill mandates that students be graded on the basis of their "reasoned answers" rather than their political beliefs. Reading lists should "respect the uncertainty and unsettled character of all human knowledge." Speakers brought to
campus should "promote intellectual pluralism," and faculty should eschew political, religious or "anti-religious" bias. Notwithstanding its contorted syntax, the bill may sound reasonable. But, in fact, it has nothing to do with balance and everything to do with promoting a neoconservative agenda. For one thing, the proposed "safeguards" to "protect" students from faculty intimidation are already in place at all universities, which have procedures to encourage students' feedback and evaluate their grievances. Despite
a lot of noise from the right about liberal bias on campus, thereare simply no meaningful data to suggest that any of these procedures have failed. The real purpose of the bill, then, is not to provide students with "rights" but to institute state monitoring of universities, to impose specific points of view on instructors -- in many cases, points of view that have been intellectually discredited -- and ultimately to silence dissenting voices by punishing universities that protect them. "Why should we, as fairly moderate to conservative legislators, continue to support universities that turn out students who rail against the very policies their parents voted us in for?" asks the Republican sponsor of the Ohio version of the bill. Backers of the Florida bill would like to empower students to sue professors with whom they disagree on the theory of evolution. The campaign for academic "rights" actually originated with organizations and individuals committed to defending Israel from criticism, and whose interest in curtailing academic freedom dovetails with those of conservatives. At the federal level, for example, a confluence of conservative and pro-Israeli forces helped push HR 3077 through the House of Representatives in 2003. That bill, which foundered in a Senate committee (but has been resurrected in the current Congress), called for government monitoring of international studies programs that receive federal funding. The bill was drafted in response to the claim that the federal government was funding programs that criticize American foreign policy. If passed, it would have created a board (including two members from "federal agencies that have national security responsibilities") to ensure that academic programs "better reflect the national needs related to homeland security." Its supporters included the American Jewish Congress, the Anti-Defamation League, and the American Israel Political Action Committee, the bulwark of Israel's Washington lobby. The bill was also backed by pro-Israel agitators Daniel Pipes and Martin Kramer, who, via allies such as neoconservative firebrand David Horowitz, are among the proponents of the "bill of rights" legislation at the state level. All the proposed bills before state legislatures are variants of a text written by Horowitz and backed by Students for Academic Freedom, which maintains a website where students can complain about their instructors' supposed bias. The problem with all this is that the university is meant to be an insular environment. Those within its walls are supposed to be protected from outside political pressures so that learning can take place. But the lesson of the recent upheavals at Columbia University -- where an individual professor became the object of a concerted campaign of intimidation because of his criticisms of Israel -- is that pressure groups targeting an individual professor for his public views are willing to inflict collateral damage on an entire university. What the new legislation offers such groups is the opportunity to inflict damage preemptively on our entire educational system. Despite its narrow defeat in the California Senate Education Committee last week, SB 5's supporters clearly will not disappear quietly. If this and similar bills pass, who gets hired and what gets taught could be decided not according to academic and intellectual criteria but by pressure groups, many of whose members are failed academics driven by crassly political motivations. Society would pay the price." [The origin of this massive new censorship is noted to be lobbyists for Israel. But that is only partially correct. "Rick Salomon is best known for his relationships with various female celebrities. As the son of a former executive vice president at Warner Bros, Salomon grew up in the affluent and celebrity-filled world of Hollywood. From the ages of 15 to 20, he was reportedly a drug dealer to various entertainment industry stars, eventually quitting to become a professional gambler and pornographer. During this time he has been linked with such celebrities as Drew Barrymore, Paris Hilton, Kirsten Dunst, and Pamela Anderson. Salomon first rose to national prominence during his short and volatile marriage to actress Shannen Doherty. A messy public split was followed by an anullment after only nine months, with Doherty reportedly upset with Salomon's continuing relationship with Hilton. In 2003, rumors of a sex tape featuring Hilton and Salomon surfaced. The tape leaked onto the internet, and Salomon filed suit both against the company distributing the tape and the Hilton family, who he accused of tarnishing his reputation by suggesting that he had exploited Paris. Salomon further claimed in his $10 million suit that the Hiltons were implying that Paris was underage when the tape was made, and were attempting to crush him to preserve the image they had created for her. After a few months, Salomon started to distribute the tape himself through his own company (http://www.clubredlight.com) and was sued by Paris Hilton. This suit was settled, with Hilton receiving $400,000 and a cut of the profits from the tape."

Government mulls revising youth trips to camps in Poland,

"The Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Education are considering far-reaching changes to the youth pilgrimages to Poland. The Foreign Ministry says that the programs' current format harms Israel-Poland relations and fosters alienation and hostility between Israelis and Poles. The Ministry of Education proposes an increase in encounters between young Israelis and Poles, but says the proposal has not yet received a satisfactory response from the Polish side. A sense of the Polish attitude toward Israeli youth pilgrimages can be gleaned from the statement of Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem two months ago, when he met with Minister of Education Limor Livnat. Livnat announced at the meeting that during the current school year, a record 22,000 Israeli students will visit Poland. President Kwasniewski responded: "What is important is what the youth see when they visit Poland. We think it is not enough to show what happened during the Holocaust - they need to know something about 800 years of Jewish life in Poland that preceded the tragedy." The youth pilgrimages come up frequently at meetings between Polish and Israeli officials. The Poles say the trips present their country one-dimensionally, as a place that was and is still hostile to Jews. Others complain of the tours' logistics, and say it is insulting that the Israeli groups travel around Poland in isolation, avoiding contact with local youth and leaders. The heavy security that surrounds the groups only worsens this impression. Foreign Ministry officials say that most of the complaints are justified. As a result, the trips' current format has been increasingly questioned recently. One Israeli diplomat told Haaretz that he objects to continuing the trips to Poland, despite their importance in strengthening Jewish and Israeli identity. "The Poles complain that we minimize the Germans' role in the Holocaust, as though the concentration camps were Polish," the diplomat said. "It is true that the Holocaust took place mostly in Poland, but often the Poles are presented as having as much responsibility for the Holocaust as the Germans," he said ... Over the past few years, the Poland trips have received criticism from various quarters. Researchers say the trips fail to transmit universal values such as tolerance for the other and education against harming minorities. Most studies agree that the principal lesson learned on the trips is that without a strong Israel and a strong army, there can be no guarantee for a future Jewish existence ... The Poland youth tours are unique in the world, because of the project's size and the extent of government intervention. Launched in 1988 by then-Education Minister Amnon Rubinstein, 350,000 young Israelis have participated in the tours. The number of participants has grown from several thousand to more than 20,000 each year ... Researchers have found that the trips tend to foster national and Zionist values for the most part, and to a much lesser degree - universal pan-human values. A study conducted by Hava Schechter found that the trips radicalize the youth who participate. Adi Ophir says that the nature of the trips are determined by the organizers' profit motives to a great degree, and by a quasi-religious belief in the need for a strong Israel. He says both
interfer with using the trips to encourage serious discussion of the moral issues evoked by the tour. Dr. Jackie Feldman of Ben-Gurion University in Be'er Sheva is one of the tours most trenchant critics. Feldman, who participated in several tours in the 1990's, describes them as pilgrimages of "Zionist civil
religion," where students are inculcated with the message that Israel
is the only safe place for Jews, in a world steeped in anti-Semitism.
Feldman says that the lack of encounters with Poles and the strict
security arrangements foster a sense of threat and hatred toward Poles
which engenders statements such as, "Nothing changes. Poles are the
same anti-Semites as before." The lack of encounters with local Jews
reinforces the message that the only natural place for Jews to live is
Israel, he says."

Largest March of Living begins today,

"As many as 20,000 people from Panama to Uzbekistan are expected to participate in the annual March of the Living program in Poland this week, making this year's march the largest to date. Opening ceremonies for the Holocaust Remembrance Day pilgrimage are to begin Wednesday night, followed by the three-kilometer march itself, from Auschwitz to Birkenau, on Thursday. Itineraries differ after that, with the many independent groups participating in the program focusing on various aspects of Jewish life in Poland during and since the Holocaust. Many of the groups will continue on (or return) to Israel on Sunday for more touring and educational experiences. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is joining the March of the Living on Thursday and, while he is undoubtedly the highest-profile participant this year, he is by no means the only VIP. Senior Polish officials will accompany Sharon, as will Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany. Nobel prizewinning author and Auschwitz survivor Elie Wiesel will address the gathering. Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler, who is Jewish, will lead a Canadian contingent. Even Eric Braeden, the German-born (non-Jewish) star of the American soap opera The Young and the Restless, an avid supporter of Israel, will be there, too. In addition to perpetuating the memory of the Holocaust, the March of the Living has been found to have a profound effect on its participants' connection to their Jewish identity. Funded by numerous Jewish organizations and Israeli agencies, the program has continually grown since its beginning in 1988."

"Pulsa denura is commonly considered the most severe of kabbalistic curses. According to descriptions found in books and the media, ten righteous kabbalists gather at midnight in a synagogue, by the light of black candles, blow shofars and recite the curse. If the curse has been uttered by worthy and righteous men and against an appropriate target, the target is supposed to die within the year. If it has been uttered by unworthy persons or against a target who has not sinned, the curse is supposed to have a boomerang effect. Among the persons against whom the pulsa denura has been recited, or at least against whom its use has been threatened: the late prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, current Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, the late Jerusalem mayor Gershon Agron and the incumbent mayor, Uri Lupolianski. It is doubtful if any Israeli public figure could be considered truly high-ranking without a pulsa denura being invoked against him at least once - in a synagogue or at least in a press leak ... [T]wo researchers reached the conclusion that the pulsa denura invoked today is merely a new and particularly frightening version of an excommunication edict, a ceremony that also incorporates extinguishing candles, blowing shofars in synagogue and reciting a curse. Excommunication does not really frighten secular Jews. In the final analysis, what do they care if the Haredim ostracize them? After Israel's establishment, the term pulsa denura replaced excommunication. The researchers did not identify who gave excommunication its new name. But so as not to hold the reader in suspense, we will note that use of the curse in the early days of the state was usually attributed to religious struggles in Jerusalem that involved the leader of the anti-Zionist Neturei Karta movement, Amram Blau .. In the Haredi book of transgressions, handing someone over to the authorities - informing - is one of the most serious offenses. This is a relic of the days when the non-Jewish ruler was considered an enemy, and a Jew who informed on his fellow Jew was placing him in mortal danger. Therefore, it was determined that someone who handed someone over to the authorities was considered a rodef, one who endangers the life of a Jew. The very friendly Diaspora in the United States, and the need to cooperate with American legal authorities, created an ongoing challenge for the rabbis. Is U.S. non-Jewish law equivalent to the "Polish landlord" law? And is it really forbidden to inform on someone? A new ruling by Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv appears in Yeshurun, a compendium of articles on halacha (Jewish religious law), in which the rabbi says it is permissible, in certain cases, to hand over a child abuser to the American police. Elyashiv, considered the most important ... Elyashiv's willingness to permit cooperation with U.S. authorities shrinks when it comes to parental abuse of children. This has to do with the concern that the child will be removed from his parents' home and given to a foster family that is either Christian or secular. "There is no doubt that this would harm the soul of the child, even if for a short while," writes Elyashiv, who instructed that Torah sages must be consulted in every case of parental abuse. Cherlow's limit ... The Orthodox response to the Holocaust is far from uniform. For instance, Haredim object to the officially observed Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Day (Yom Hashoah) due to its secular content and the fact that it falls in the month of Nisan, when mourning is forbidden. In
addition, there is still no broadly accepted text for Holocaust Day such as exists for Tisha B'Av (the Book of Lamentations), the Passover seder (the Haggada) and Purim (the Book of Esther). One group that has adopted Holocaust Day and is proposing a unique liturgical text is the Conservative movement, which this year published Megillat Hashoah (the Shoah Scroll), composed by literature professor Avigdor Shinan. The scroll completes the Conservative initiative to formulate an order of unique prayers for Holocaust Day. Survey: Americans trail Europe in knowledge about the Holocaust,

"Anti-Semitism may be on the rise in Europe, but Europeans still know more about the Holocaust than Americans, a new study finds. Sixty years after the end of World War II, just 44 percent of U.S. respondents in an American Jewish Committee survey identified Auschwitz, Dachau and Treblinka as concentration or death camps. By contrast, 91 percent of Swedish, 88 percent of Austrian, 79 percent of Polish, 78 percent of French, 77 percent of German and 53 percent of British respondents correctly labeled the camps. The AJCommittee study, obtained by JTA in advance of its slated Wednesday release, further finds that only a third of Americans know that 6 million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust. Among Europeans, 55 percent of Swedish respondents know the 6 million number, as do 49 percent of French and German respondents, 41 percent of Austrian respondents and 39 percent of British respondents. Only 30 percent of Polish respondents know this number .... Sweden, for example, has launched a national Holocaust education campaign, distributing 7 million copies of a book about the Holocaust, even translating it into several languages so that as many people as possible can read it ... A majority of respondents, in both the United States and Europe, said the Holocaust made clear the importance of Israel’s existence as a haven for Jews, and said keeping the memory of the Holocaust strong is important. Most also expressed support for compulsory lessons in schools about the Nazi extermination of Jews ... Respondents also were asked whether they agree with the statement that “Jews exert too much influence on world events.” Twenty-two percent of the Polish respondents said they strongly agree with the statement, as did 15 percent of the Austrians, 12 percent of the Germans, 10 percent of the British, 8 percent of the French and the Americans and 3 percent of the Swedes. Asked whether they were very sympathetic, somewhat sympathetic, somewhat unsympathetic, very unsympathetic or neutral in their attitudes toward Jews, the number of respondents in the “very unsympathetic” category did not top 1 percent in any group. Three-quarters of the Austrian respondents said they were neutral, as did 69 percent of German, 59 percent of Polish, 55 percent of Swedish, 53 percent of French and 37 percent of British respondents. Among Americans, 30 percent said they were very sympathetic, 25 percent somewhat sympathetic, 3 percent somewhat unsympathetic, 1 percent very unsympathetic and 34 percent neutral. “We at the American Jewish Committee can find in each country results that are more and less encouraging,” Harris said." What's Wrong With This Picture? Homosexuals Attack Christians; Marvin Olasky Attacks Christians,

"It was, to put it mildly, an ugly scene when in early October of last year, in Philadelphia, "Repent America" Director Michael Marcavage and some of his fellow Christians tried to peacefully preach the Gospel at a homosexual block party known as "Outfest." When the Christians arrived, they were surrounded by angry homosexuals who blocked their Christian signs. Loud, shrill whistles were blown in the ears of the Christians. Vile language was screamed at the Christians.
Eleven Christians from "Repent America," including Marcavage, were arrested. All of them, after spending 21 hours in jail, were each charged with three felonies and five misdemeanors. The felony charges included: criminal conspiracy; ethnic intimidation (preaching the Gospel and singing "Blessed Be The Name Of The Lord); and riot. The misdemeanors charges were: reckless endangerment of another person (hate crime enabler, predicate act); possessing instruments of crime (the use of a megaphone to preach); disorderly conduct and failure to disperse; and obstructing a highway. If all these Christians had been convicted --- which, thank God, they were not --- each would have faced, respectively, up to 47 years in prison and a $90,000 fine. Now, you would think that if a Christian journalist was writing about all this, in a supposedly Christian publication, the story here is obvious. The "hate crime" here was by the homosexuals against the Christians. But, no, when "World" magazine editor-in-chief Marvin Olasky wrote about this in his column in "World" magazine, he attacked the Christians! In his column, headlined "How to hurt evangelism/In-your-face protests may distort, not amplify, the message," Olasky began by noting that when a judge dismissed all charges against these Christians, she said that free speech extends to Nazis, the KKK and "Repent America." This, he said, was "bitter news for evangelism" because the word had gone out from this judge that Nazis, KKK, and Christians were "all repulsive, but we have to put up with them." But, this is an unconscionable cheap shot, especially from a person who is supposed to be a fellow-Christian. [Note: Olasky is a Jewish convert to Christianity.] What, exactly, is the point of saying this when Marcavage and the other Christians in his group were in no way responsible for what this judge said? The notion that evangelism is somehow "hurt" because of what some judge said is absurd. Olasky also took Marcavage and his Christian crew to task because they carried a sign "decorated by flames, telling the gay revelers that they are going to hell." He asks: "How does that show Christ's compassion?" Well, (1) It's a fact, because God says it, that unrepentant homosexuals ARE going to go to hell unless they repent of their sin and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. And (2) it always shows the compassion of Christ to tell people what God says ... Ironically, Olasky tells how he once asked some of his University of Texas journalism students to answer the question: "How do Christians act?" Typical answers included: "Fanatical…Trying to force others to do everything their way. Bossing, not helping, others." This is ironic BECAUSE THIS IS THE WAY THE HOMOSEXUALS TREATED MARCAVAGE AND HIS CHRISTIAN CREW! Olasky concludes his column by referring, obviously, to Marcavage and his Christian evangelists, saying that we, as Christians, should be "constantly reexamining our own understanding and tactics." Well, amen! But, in this particular case, it is Marvin Olasky who should be reexamining, and apologizing for, his gratuitous and unwarranted bashing of Michael Marcavage and his fellow Christians who were simply trying to tell Hell-bound homosexuals what God says about their sin. We, as Christians, should expect to be attacked by the world. We should not expect to be attacked by the Editor of "World" magazine, which is supposed to be a Christian publication."

The first appearance, a few years ago, of the Israeli and Palestinian national flags on the troubled streets of Northern Ireland was only the latest manifestation of this phenomenon. It comes as little surprise, then, that Rory Miller, a Jewish Dubliner who lectures in Mediterranean studies at King’s College, London, has chosen to examine Ireland’s evolving policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in his new book, “Ireland and the Palestine Question, 1948-2004.”But instead of constructing Israel’s wars as Ireland’s “troubles” writ large, Miller’s book specifically seeks to challenge the Irish tendency to see the Middle East through a local prism ... Most significantly, it addresses why Israel and the “Palestine question” have occupied a place in Irish consciousness that is far greater than their geographic, economic or political relevance to Ireland. Miller says that the issues of partition, holy places, refugees, and Israeli military action all resonate emotionally with the Irish. The Irish government also sees the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians as an opportunity to increase its influence in international affairs ... That world is unrecognizable in today’s Ireland, where Israel is regarded as something of a pariah state. Indeed, as Miller’s epilogue shows, since the collapse of the Camp David talks in 2000 the Irish government has been able to lobby on behalf of the Palestinian Authority with what is essentially the full support of the electorate, while Israel has been increasingly marginalized. The Palestinian intifada has engendered widespread antagonism toward Israel in Ireland ... “What Ireland has done is highlight a common position within Europe in terms of being so sympathetic to the Palestinians and so anti-Israel, giving Arafat in particular a free pass,” Miller says. “That’s where I blame the Irish government. They were saying to him, ‘Do whatever you like and we’ll be there to back you up.’ This is what Ireland has to admit to, and say, ‘We were wrong.’ ”

"Israeli efforts to secure swift American action against Iran's nuclear program are being threatened by a stalled presidential nomination and the sudden dismissal of two officials at the country's most influential pro-Israel lobbying organization. Last week the Forward and the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported that the lobbying group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, was pushing out two of its top officials — Steve Rosen, the organization's policy director, and Keith Weissman, its senior analyst on Iran. The two men, who are reportedly being investigated by the FBI for allegedly passing classified documents to Israel, were Aipac's point men in lobbying the White House on Iran-related issues. Also last week, with mounting opposition toward Bush's choice of John Bolton to serve as America's ambassador to the United Nations, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee postponed its vote on the nomination. A neoconservative ally of Vice President Richard Cheney and the State Department's top official on arms control, Bolton is known as a strong supporter of Israel's position that Tehran is coming alarmingly close to being able to weaponize its nuclear material — a view rejected by other top Bush administration officials. Pro-Israel activists in Washington are privately worrying that the shakeup at Aipac, as well as Bolton's troubles, will make it even harder for Jerusalem to convince the White House that quick action must be taken against Iran. "It would sure help to have Bolton in the U.N. and credible [pro-Israel] lobbyists in Washington," said a senior official with a major national Jewish organization, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "This is a crucial point in time" to impact America's policy on Iran, the organizational official said ... Sharon's government and its friends in Washington are still hoping that Bolton will spearhead an American leadership role in imposing U.N. Security Council sanctions on Iran ... Similar concerns about the impact of Aipac's moves are being voiced. But, in addition, these worries are intertwined with a sense of bewilderment and anxiety among Jewish organizational leaders over the dismissal of Rosen and Weissman. For several months — and perhaps for as long as two years — the men have been the target of the FBI investigation. They are suspected of having illegally transferred secret information from a Pentagon expert on Iran, Larry Franklin, to an Israeli diplomat. Rosen and Weissman deny any wrongdoing. In the past, Aipac had emphatically denied that any of its employees had done anything wrong. However, last week, in response to queries from the Forward, Aipac spokesman Patrick Dorton said he could not reply to the question of whether Aipac stood behind its past claims that none of the organization's employees had acted illegally or improperly. Dorton, who was communications director of President Clinton's National Economic Council and later specialized in crisis-management public relations, was recently hired by Aipac to speak to the media about the investigation ... Sources close to Aipac said that members of the board put pressure on the organization's leadership to distance itself from Rosen and Weissman. One senior staffer at a national Jewish organization, who knows Aipac intimately, said, "Aipac had to cut bait." The official said that the ongoing scandal was eating away at Aipac "like cancer." But the firing of Steve Rosen, Aipac's policy director, is the first tangible price — and a very dear one — that the organization is paying as a result of the scandal.

"Mike Murphy, a judge in Florida's Orange County, issued an original ruling two weeks ago in response to an accusation that an area resident made anti-Semitic comments to a Jewish woman walking with her children in Maitland, Florida. The judge sentenced the accused to 50 hours' community service or a visit to one of three Holocaust museums: one located in the Jewish center where she lives; one in St. Petersburg, Florida; or the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The sentence, which exposed the existence of popular anti-Semitism in the United States, also emphasized the high level of awareness there regarding the educational task of Holocaust museums. In the U.S. alone, there are about 30 Holocaust museums, and if you add exhibits in community centers, schools and Jewish museums not dedicated to the Holocaust, the number of Holocaust exhibits rises to at least 100. This week American media outlets reported a significant increase in organized visits by students from around the country to Washington, which is recovering from the fall in domestic tourism that began after September 11, 2001. The media reports highlighted the educational importance of visiting the Holocaust museum in the capital, alongside meeting Congressmen and touring American historic sites. The Holocaust museum in Washington plays a central role in education and in forming the collective memory of American citizens. According to museum statistics, some 22 million people, 80 percent of whom are not Jewish, have visited the museum since it opened in April 1993. One-third of the visitors are students. In remarks by politicians and educators regarding the content and purpose of the museum, memorializing the Holocaust is regarded as something of a national American mission, the obligation of a superpower that sees itself as responsible for preserving the moral character of the world. However, the burgeoning number of American memorial sites and museums that deal with the Holocaust is not the only thing the U.S. has bequeathed. Nowadays there is almost no country in Europe that does not have at least one major museum dealing with the Holocaust, in addition to memorial and study sites ... In September 2001 the monumental Jewish museum in Berlin opened, giving a fuller expression to the Holocaust. Daniel Libeskind's architecture served to highlight the Holocaust, but this was done in a broad way, including descriptions of the magnificent past of German Jewry. Only this year, after a decade of vociferous debates, was a memorial site to the Holocaust dedicated in Berlin that deals entirely with the intended extermination of the Jews ... Today there is clearly an emphasis on the uniqueness of the Holocaust, a recognition of the link between anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, and awareness of the centrality of the Jewish martyrs. In the wake of the ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, which took place at the concentration camp in January with the participation of world leaders, after the exhibition at the United Nations that commemorated the Holocaust for the first time and after the international presence at the dedication of the new Yad Vashem museum, there is concern that human memory may have reached its saturation point. Psychologists may point to the link between lifting the repression from the memory of the Holocaust and the occurrence of classic anti-Semitism in Europe, which in its present form focuses on the Jews of Israel."

"President George W. Bush's nomination of John Bolton as the next US representative to the United Nations has Democrats concerned, Republicans supportive and Jews mostly pleased. That doesn't mean, however, that the Jews are willing to expend too much political capital to save a nominee whose confirmation has fallen into jeopardy over questions of temperament. Testimony about Bolton's performance and treatment of underlings as US undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, combined with Democrats' objections to Bolton's record, has held up his nomination in the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The committee must approve the nomination before it can come to a vote in the Senate, where Bolton likely will have the support of the Republican majority necessary for confirmation. The feeling among many Jewish groups is that any concerns over Bolton's temperament should take a back seat to his politics, which have been strongly and boldly supportive of Israel. Bolton was instrumental in getting the infamous 1975 UN resolution equating Zionism with racism repealed. "I think overriding [concern about Bolton's temperament] is his ability to argue America's position in support of Israeli positions," said Jack Rosen, chairman of the American Jewish Congress. "The UN, I think, needs a strong voice and presence, in the tradition of Moynihan and Kirkpatrick." The late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a Democrat, and Jeane Kirkpatrick, who served at the UN for four years under Ronald Reagan, both were unabashed advocates for Israel during their tenures as US ambassadors to the UN. Moynihan called the UN resolution equating Zionism with racism an "obscene act" and frequently said the UN was a dangerous place – sometimes from the floor of the UN General Assembly. Kirkpatrick once told The Jerusalem Post that, after coming to the UN, "I felt for the first time in my life that I could understand how the Holocaust happened." Now, some of the same things that have Democrats troubled about Bolton's politics have won plaudits from many Jews, such as Bolton's now-famous declaration a decade ago that "it wouldn't make a bit of a difference" if 10 of the 38 stories at the UN building in New York suddenly disappeared. The support among Jewish groups for Bolton – including praise from the major pro-Israel lobby in Washington, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee – demonstrates the degree to which this White House has won Jewish support for its foreign policy positions. While the vast majority of Jewish voters vote Democrat, and the battle over Bolton's nomination has split roughly along partisan lines, in this case the Jews are coming down mostly on the side of the Republicans, not the Democrats. With the sense that the UN has been tilted against Israel for much of
the last four decades, Jewish groups and Israel advocates tend to favor UN-bashers like Bolton. Israel's last ambassador to the United Nations, Dore Gold, published a book after he stepped down from his post at the world body denigrating the UN as immoral, ineffective and problematic. The book, called Tower of Babble: How the United Nations has Fueled Global Chaos, argues that anti-American and antidemocratic forces have hijacked the UN and put America and its allies at risk."

"One of three students expelled from a private boys' school for posting anti-Semitic comments on a website is himself Jewish, the school's headmaster said Monday. Three students have been expelled and four more suspended from Royal St. George's College after the website was shut down last week. "Everybody is really shaken up and we have to digest this," said Hal Hannaford. "It really becomes very complicated." The grade 10 students' involvement with the website came to light after students at Branksome Hall, a private girls' school, told their principal about the site. One of the girls also wrote a note in the site's chat room, urging its creators to remove Nazi-themed material. In response, she was reportedly targeted with anti-Semitic slurs on the site. Branksome Hall principal Karen Murton says the school has always encouraged its girls to report intolerance "They must not simply be bystanders," Murton said. "They know the difference between right and wrong, so they must step forward. "I am proud of these girls." Both schools have now held student assemblies to draw attention to the issue of anti-Semitism. Social workers have also been brought in at Royal St. George's College to help the students deal with what the school describes as a tragic incident."

U.K. academic boycott may be quashed before it takes effect,

"The controversial decision by Britain's Association of University Teachers (AUT), to boycott Bar-Ilan and Haifa universities, may be annulled before it actually takes effect. Members of the association who oppose the boycott are attempting to collect 25 signatures of AUT's council to force a special meeting that will overturn the decision. One of the teachers behind this move, Dr. David Hirsh, said in a telephone interview from London University's Goldsmith College, that four to five signatures have been collected: "The call went out only on Wednesday. It is still early," he said, adding that he is convinced the remainder will be collected in the coming days. According to AUT rules, if 25 council members sign an official request for a second discussion, the association's president may summon a special meeting of the council. Hirsh, a sociologist, says he supports a Palestinian state, but opposes an academic boycott. "Israel is not 'illegitimate,' as South African apartheid was. Occupation is illegitimate, not Israel itself." A week has passed since the AUT's annual convention in Eastbourne, where the association voted on the boycott. Bar-Ilan University was targeted due to its support of the College of Judea and Samaria in the settlement of Ariel, and Haifa was boycotted because the university victimized "academic staff and students who seek to research and discuss the history of the founding of the State of Israel." The latter clause refers mainly to Dr. Ilan Pappe, a post-Zionist historian from Haifa University. The decision exempts from the boycott academics and intellectuals who opposed "their state's colonialist and racist policies." The AUT decision has aroused tremendous opposition, both in Israel and in England. Members of AUT said opponents of the boycott were not permitted to speak at the discussion, and the decision was taken without requesting the universities' response. In addition, doubts were raised about the legality of the decision. The past week was rife with anti-boycott activity: several lecturers resigned from the association in protest; faculty members, rectors university presidents, and not only from Bar-Ilan and Haifa universities, asked British colleagues not to join the boycott, and to persuade others to reject it; and Jewish organizations in Britain, such as "Academic Friends for Israel," lobbied extensively to have the boycott annulled. A Times of London editorial harshly condemned the decision, and university intranet and internet, the new arena for political warfare, is overflowing with condemnations and a variety of strategic proposals to counter the decision. Michael Green of Cambridge University, one of the world's leading physicists, is one of the members who resigned from AUT. "I would condemn many actions of Israel's government," Green told Haaretz, "but (a boycott) contradicts academic freedom." He called the decision "outrageous," saying it exceeded the agenda of a trade union. "Why is such a step taken against Israel, and not applied to many places in the world, such as Russia, for its policy in Chechnya?" Green said three or four other people told him they would resign from AUT as a result of the boycott. Dr. Jonathan Ginzburg, an Israeli lecturer at London's Kings College, and Prof. Shalom Lapin, a Jewish faculty member at Kings, announced their resignation from AUT earlier this week. Both were active in preventing an academic boycott of Israel that the AUT proposed in 2003. "There is a lot of anger about this decision," Ginzburg told Haaretz. "Many delegates voted without learning what was the position of their local branch members." Lapin and Ginzburg say another five lecturers plan to resign from AUT and others are considering the move. A key figure behind the boycott is Dr. Sue Blackwell from Birmingham University. As an academic she specializes in language and gender issues, speech development in children and legal language. As an activist she is the local representative of AUT and campaigns against the war in Iraq, against Israel's policies and against racism. "Whenever the British National Party stands for elections in Birmingham, you will find me campaigning against them on the street and reminding voters of the horrors of the Holocaust", Blackwell says. AUT's decision, which was taken last Friday, has been in the pipeline for two years. Blackwell and other teachers had attempted to pass a general academic boycott of Israel, a move that failed. However a series of other decision were taken, including the condemnation of human rights violations in the occupied territories, and the decision that anti-Zionism is not equivalent to Anti-Semitism, as well as a condemnation of "the witch-hunt against colleagues who take part in the academic boycott of Israel." In December 2004 London University held a conference about boycotting Israel, with the participation of British and Palestinians academics and one Israeli (Dr. Pappe). In the interim some 60 Palestinian cultural, labor, and academic organizations called for an academic boycott of Israel, a step which provided encouragement for the British initiative."

Wendy Campbell, who owns the MarWen Media Web site, has promoted Holocaust denial and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories discussing "unrivaled Jewish power," and maintains an additional Web site entitled "Exposing Israeli Apartheid," which is also linked by Blackwell. MarWen Media, which is linked directly from Blackwell's Web site, advocates the views of Kevin Macdonald, an anti-Semitic pro-Nazi author, who has claimed Jews are responsible for a "breeding program" to conquer other "races." Under the heading "Sue Blackwell's links on Israel and Palestine," Blackwell provides a link to the MarWen site, along with the following description: "MarWen Media offers the latest in groundbreaking documentaries, breaking through barriers and taboos that mainstream media – and even most alternative media do not venture." "GOOGLE has plans that will dramatically improve the results of internet news searches, by ranking them according to quality rather than simply by their date and relevance to search terms. The ambitious system is revealed by patents filed in the US and around the world (WO 2005/029368) by researchers based at the company's headquarters in Mountain View, California.At the moment the company's search engine throws up thousands of "hits" in response to simple entries such as "Iraq", which lead to news websites. These are ranked either in order of relevance or by date, so that the most recent or most focused appear at the top of the huge list. This means that articles carrying more authority, say from CNN or the BBC, can be ousted from the first page of results, simply because they are not as recent or as relevant to the keyword entered in the search line. Now Google, whose name has become synonymous with internet searching, plans to build a database that will compare the track record and credibility of all news sources around the world, and adjust the ranking of any search results accordingly.The database will be built by continually monitoring the number of stories from all news sources, along with average story length, number with bylines, and number of the bureaux cited, along with how long they have been in business. Google's database will also keep track of the number of staff a news source employs, the volume of internet traffic to its website and the number of countries accessing the site. Google will take all these parameters, weight them according to formulae it is constructing, and distil them down to create a single value. This number will then be used to rank the results of any news search. The patent also reveals that the same system could be roped in to rank other search results, not simply news. A 20-year-old man was wounded overnight Friday when he fell from the roof of building near the Barbi nightclub in Tel Aviv. Following the incident, the nightclub's owner decided to close the club, leading to unruly behavior on the part of many of the clubbers. The revelers attacked police officers on the scene. Three were arrested. The year 2004 saw a rise in crimes that occured in nightclubs, according to data provided by the head of the Israel Police's juvenille branch, Suzi Ben Baruch. It is rare that a weekend passes without some violent incident inside a club or at its entrance. The crimes that occur in clubs range from property theft through the use and sale of illegal drugs, rape, fights, stabbings and occasional shootings. Nine youths have been killed in fights near or in clubs over the past two years. Many others have been wounded in stabbings. Police say most such violence takes place for two reasons: insults to honor and arguments over women. Many fights break out when security guards refuse to let someone enter the club, or when clubgoers refuse to undergo a security check."

"The St. Petersburg Prosecutor’s Office has proclaimed that the infamous March petition demanding a ban on Jewish groups was not anti-Semitic, the Izvestia newspaper reported Friday. No complaints will be filed against the petition’s senders. In January 2005 a group of Russian MPs appealed to the state prosecution demanding a ban on all Jewish groups over claims of extremism. In March 500 well-known public figures joined the MPs, and the petition eventually received 5,000 signatures. However, prosecutors decided that the petition contained no essential elements of offence, Izvestia reports. After publishing the petition the Rus Pravoslavnaya (Orthodox Russia) and Za Russkoye Delo (For the Russian Cause) newspapers received a warning from prosecutors for extremism in March. One observer of the case, ethnographer and anthropologist Valentina Uzunova, told Izvestia that she could see ethnic hatred in the two papers’ publication. However, she could not give any details, because the case is not closed yet, Izvestia reports. The Prosecutor’s Office has punished the newspaper according to the gravity of the offence, Uzunova said. “A warning is serious enough. It does not mean the Prosecutor’s Office has neglected the newspaper’s actions. However, only the courts can decide if the newspaper should be shut down,” Uzunova was quoted as saying."

"The Russian Jewish Congress has said it intends to sue the Duma deputies that signed a letter addressed to the prosecutor general in which the politicians called for a ban on Jewish organizations. The organization also plans to sue the newspaper Rus Pravoslavnaya (Orthodox Russia) which published the letter on Jan. 23, the Russian Information Agency Novosti reported, citing a press release from the congress. “The signatures of the deputies of the State Duma beneath the text compromise the legislative branch of government and undermine the faith in a peaceful coexistence among various people and religions on Russian territory,” the statement said. The letter the parliamentarians addressed to the State Duma, which stunned rights activists in Russia and abroad, likened Judaism to an extremist religion that offered human sacrifices. It was recalled after sparking an outrage. The Jewish Congress’ press release cited experts who said that the letter itself was unlawful under a section of the Russian Criminal Code that makes inciting interracial hatred illegal. “The fact that the letter was recalled does not change the openly anti-Semitic text of the letter, nor the fact that it was published in the mass media,” the press release said."

Last week, Slutsker proposed the idea of establishing a rapid reaction force to defend Russian Jews, Kommersant newspaper wrote on Friday. Speaking at the business club session, he said such groups could be “called on a 24-hour phone to defend Russian Jews from violent attacks.” It was, however, not clear whether he discussed this proposal with Ustinov or not. Earlier, Russia’s top rabbi Berl Lazar met with Ustinov to discuss a letter sent to the Prosecutor General’s office calling for a ban on Jewish organizations. The prosecutor general told Lazar the problem could not be solved with legal methods alone, and an expert group must consider all aspects.
The paper cited the congress press service as saying that Slutsker’s meeting with Ustinov had no connection to Lazar’s, although they discussed “measures to prevent xenophobia, religious hatred and anti-Semitism in society”. Ustinov and Slutsker found that the whole of society, representatives of religious confessions and state power should make efforts to “cultivate tolerance, respect towards people of different nationality and belief”."

"No one has ever mistook "Missing Heaven" for a religious tome, said its author. That is why she was so "shocked" to hear the Chester County commissioners had apologized for the county endorsing her book, in part because of what officials perceive as its spiritual overtones. Missing Heaven," the two-year-old, self-published work by Westtown resident Caroline Wagner, was selected as the inaugural work for the Chester County Reads program last week. The goal of Chester County Reads is to encourage residents to read the book this summer, then participate in discussion groups about it in the fall. However, since it was publicly announced that the book was chosen, questions have been raised by some about its message and whether it is appropriate for the taxpayer-funded Chester County Library to make it the centerpiece of its new literary program.
"I couldn’t have been more shocked at the news," Wagner said Friday. "I think (the book) says we all have to decide for ourselves what we believe. Nobody else can tell you what to believe and nobody else can make us believe by any amount of teaching." The author, herself, is Christian. She said she worships at an ecumenical church that hosts not only Christian services, but also a Jewish congregation and a Buddhist sangha. The book centers around the character, Hannah, and her healing powers. Wagner believes "Missing Heaven" could be interpreted to have an anti-organized religion message. "The most unlikable character is very heavy-handedly religious," Wagner said, "and uses religion against Hannah when she’s a child." "Missing Heaven" has prompted a letter from the Philadelphia chapter of the Anti-Defamation League followed by an apology from the commissioners, read during their Thursday meeting by commissioners’ Chairman Donald A. Mancini ... Nancy Baron-Baer, associate director of Philadelphia’s Anti-Defamation League, said the letter sent to the library system simply raised questions about "Missing Heaven," but did not demand the book be changed. She also admitted not having read the book, but said her organization is attempting to obtain a copy. A number of factors set off alarms with the ADL, including the book’s title and county’s history with the controversial Ten Commandments plaque hanging from the Chester County Courthouse. "We need to be mindful of keeping the separation between church and state," Baron-Baer said. "We can’t be endorsing religion in any factor."

Boca Islamic group will let Holocaust denier speak,

"A Boca Raton Islamic group has decided to keep William W. Baker, a reputed Holocaust denier who was chased out of town last year, as keynote speaker at a birthday banquet for the prophet Mohammed tonight.
Imam Mohammad Al-Qazwini, 23, told the Boca Raton News Friday that the Assadiq Foundation decided not to cancel Baker’s speech at the Boca Marriott despite objections from the same Jewish leaders who pressured Muslim students to cancel a Baker talk at Florida Atlantic University in April 2004. “Mr. Baker will not be speaking about any political issues. It’s strictly a religious gathering,” Al-Qazwini said. “We want to create a bridge between the two communities. This is not meant to be disrespectful to the Jewish community.”
Al-Qazwini said he recently conferred with Baker in California and with local Jewish community leaders over the telephone. But representatives of the Anti-Defamation League and American Jewish Committee said the imam’s decision to let Baker speak would do little to help Jewish-Muslim relations.
“This Assadiq organization is a case study of those who choose not to see,” said Art Teitelbaum, ADL southern area director. “Shame on them for providing a platform for a peddler of anti-Semitism. A skunk who doesn’t stink on a given day is still a skunk.” They pointed to Baker’s record as past chairman of the Populist Party and author of the anti-Jewish book “Theft of a Nation.”
The Populist Party, founded by American neo-Nazi godfather Willis Carto, is best known for nominating Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke for president in 1988. “When you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas,” said Bill Gralnick, southeast regional director of the American Jewish Committee. “Baker has been lying down with neo-Nazis. We classify him as a Holocaust denier.” Gralnick said he was disappointed with the Assadiq Foundation’s attitude that Baker could be separated from his record. “They seem to think they’ve solved the problem if he doesn’t talk about Israeli-Palestinian relations, but they haven’t,” Gralnick said. “It’s like inviting Hitler to talk about architecture during the Holocaust.” ... In a statement sent this weekend to local press, the Assadiq Foundation said Baker acknowledged his participation as past chairman of the Populist Party to the imam but denied any sympathy with its neo-Nazi members. “To the best of our understanding, Mr. Baker is a religious man and seems adamant about bringing people together and promoting tolerance and understanding,” the letter stated. The document also refers to an earlier survey, cited by the Knesset Center for Research and Information, in which 43% of Jewish men agreed that trafficking of women is "a natural occurrence that has always existed and will continue to exist." The report also breaks down the men who visit trafficked women into three categories: "kindhearted" clients who believe women engage in prostitution of their own free will and sometimes help the women once they find out she is a sex slave; "cruel" clients who rape, beat or threaten the women; and the "apathetic" clients who "do not appear to care at all about whether the woman agrees to have sex with them." Since paying for a women for sex is not illegal here but paying for sex "without her willing consent" is, this creates a situation in which "the current penal code in Israel allows for prosecuting 'cruel' clients, [but] the 'apathetic' ones fall through the cracks in the legal system," according to the report. According to a previous Knesset report some 3,000 to 5,000 trafficked women reside in Israel. The Hotline estimates that one million visits to these women are made each year by Israeli men – many of whom are presumably repeat clients."

Last month Mr. Grey - who succeeded Sherry Lansing, 60, in Paramount's top job - named Gail Berman, a respected television executive, to lead the studio's creative team. As a woman deciding what gets to the world's movie screens, Ms. Berman becomes the latest player in a quiet revolution transforming a business that until recently was regarded as a male preserve. Four of the six major studios have women in the top creative decision-making roles, as Ms. Berman joins Stacey Snider, chairman of Universal; Amy Pascal, chairman of Sony Pictures; and Nina Jacobson, president of Walt Disney Company's Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group ... Though men still figure most prominently in the corporate echelons of the media companies that own the studios, and talent agencies like William Morris and Creative Artists Agency are still male dominated, these women, who over the years have fought and fostered one another as part of a loose sisterhood, have finally buried the notion that Hollywood is a man's world. So striking is the change that some now see Hollywood as a gender-balanced model for the rest of corporate America. "It's astonishing," said Elizabeth Daley, dean of the film school at the University of Southern California. "You don't see that kind of progress in any other industry." Women have come to predominate in Hollywood at a time when less than 1 percent of chief executive officers in the Fortune 500 are female, and none of the nation's top 100 publicly held companies have a female chief. According to the National Association of Law Placement in Washington, 87 percent of the partners in law firms are male, although for two decades more than 50 percent of law school graduates have been female. It's true that women have yet to own studios - there is no female Rupert Murdoch or Sumner Redstone - and that executives like the Sony Pictures chairman, Michael Lynton, and the Walt Disney Studios chairman, Dick Cook, outrank their studios' female executives. But the power to buy scripts, hire directors and even to greenlight films has become so thoroughly vested in a generation of women that the very notion of a female power ranking, like the one done at the end of the year by The Hollywood Reporter, has been deemed quaint ... While it's true that women have been kicking around - and getting kicked around - behind the scenes in Hollywood since the beginning, mostly as story editors, they only began to infiltrate the power structure in the mid-70's. The names from that era are near legendary, from Marsha Nasatir [Jew?] (executive producer of "The Big Chill"), a New York book editor who came to Los Angeles at 40 and became vice president at United Artists, and Rosilyn Heller and Paula Weinstein who rose to be vice presidents at Columbia and Warner Brothers respectively. Ms. Weinstein recalls the competition among them as "incredibly intense." While women in the rest of the country were having their feminist consciousnesses raised, she said, Hollywood was "quite retarded." ... By the mid-1980's, as women were gingerly entering the executive ranks throughout corporate America, two female powerhouses emerged in Hollywood: Dawn Steel and Ms. Lansing. (Ms. Steel, who was president of production at Paramount and then president of Columbia, died of a brain tumor in 1997.) Lucy Fisher, a producer, said one reason that the two women were allowed to rise was Hollywood's "immigrant, outsider ethos." "Here," she said, "if it makes money and you're a gorilla, you're in." It is now an open secret -- confirmed by several sources and widely published -- that Kaplan, who has spent the last eight years behind bars on a mob-related drug conviction, is the government's key informant in its case against Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa ... Caracappa and Eppolito - the latter of whom detailed his life growing up in a mob family before joining the New York Police Department in the book "Mafia Cop" -- are also said to be suspected in a ninth killing, the 1986 execution-style murder of diamond dealer Israel A. Greenwald. Authorities unearthed Greenwald's skeletal remains in a Brooklyn garage two weeks ago, and suspect that Greenwald was killed as a result of a dispute with mobsters over a scheme involving Swiss bonds. That is an indication that he has been freed already and is under federal protection, sources said. There is, said sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, little doubt that Kaplan, who had won the respect of the heads of the city's most prominent crime families -- they called him "The Old Man" - is a man who knows both literally and figuratively where the bodies are buried ... A native of the lower-middle-class Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, the shy and bespectacled Kaplan gave the impression of being brainy and reliable. That appealed to local mobsters, the source said. To them, Kaplan was cast in the mold of one of their most treasured icons -- Lansky, the prototypical Jewish gangster. As the source put it, "I think the Italians, they all looked at this guy and thought, 'He's smart and he's a Jew.' " By all accounts, however, Kaplan was hardly as smart as the Italian mobsters thought he was. He was a compulsive gambler ... In 1967, he was convicted on federal fraud charges and was granted probation. In 1972, he was back in court after authorities caught the putative garment dealer with a truckload of stolen clothes. For the next 25 years he was in and out of court on a variety of charges. In 1980, he was convicted of masterminding a plot to manufacture and sell $1 million worth of methaqualone, a popular drug at the time, marketed legitimately as Quaaludes. He served three years at the federal prison at Allenwood, Pa. Through it all, Kaplan continued to keep his mouth shut about his mob connections."

"Before September 11, 2001, Juan Cole, a history professor at the University of Michigan, enjoyed anonymity outside his professional circle. He was a leading figure in the Middle East Studies Association of North America (mesa), editing for five years its flagship publication, The International Journal of Middle East Studies. (In 2004, he was elected the Association's incoming president.) But his research on certain esoteric aspects of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Middle East (e.g., the genesis of the Baha'i faith) was unlikely to bring him attention in the field and offered little hope of public acclaim. Then came September 11. When mesa came under intense criticism after the terrorist attacks for having failed to educate generations of students in the realities of the Middle East, Cole was livid. Finding it difficult to place opinion pieces in the mainstream press that could present reality as he saw it, he had the prescience to realize the immense opportunities that an online diary offered. Cole started his blog, which he called Informed Comment and subtitled Thoughts on the Middle East, History, and Religion, in April 2002. It quickly established itself as a popular source of information on the Middle East, attracting a reported 200,000 page-views per month. Informed Comment also caught the eye of journalists, earning Cole dozens of mentions in the country's top dailies and newsweeklies, an hour-long appearance on NPR's "Fresh Air," and 14 appearances on the "NewsHour" with Jim Lehrer. The Village Voice advised its readers, "If you're not already visiting Juan Cole's Informed Comment blog (juancole.com) on a daily basis, now's the time to get in the habit," while L.A. Weekly called Cole's blog "a must-read for anyone seriously interested in Iraq." In 2003, Informed Comment won the 2003 Koufax Award for best expert blog, and, last year, Cole was even asked to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the fissures within Iraqi society and his ideas for creating a stable Iraqi government. ... But, unfortunately, Cole suffers from many other common Arabist misconceptions that deeply prejudice and compromise his writing. Having done hardly any independent research on the twentieth-century Middle East, Cole's analysis of this era is essentially derivative, echoing the conventional wisdom among Arabists and Orientalists regarding Islamic and Arab history, the creation of the modern Middle East in the wake of World War I, and its relations with the outside world. Worse, Cole's discussion of U.S. foreign policy frequently veers toward conspiratorial anti-Semitism. This is hardly the "informed" commentary Cole claims it to be ... ike many of those who inhabit Middle East studies departments, Cole believes that the U.S. policy that most inflames Muslims is support for Israel. He writes that "knee-jerk US support for Israeli expansionism is at the root of anti-Americanism in the Arab world."L While Cole pays the customary lip service on his blog to Israel's right to exist within its pre-1967 borders (and says it would be worth American lives to defend Tel Aviv), he also makes clear that he thinks the Middle East would have been better off without the Jewish state ... He goes on to perversely blame Israel for Arab militarism, contending that "the rise of Israel put pressure on Arab budgets, when a different sort of neighbour might have allowed them to invest the money in more fruitful areas than the military." Cole glibly claims, "[T]o any extent that contemporary Muslims have a problem with Jews, it is largely driven by what they see as injustices done by Zionists to the Palestinians." Such ahistorical analysis ignores a deep anti-Jewish bigotry that dates to Islam's earliest days and reflects the prophet Muhammad's outrage over the rejection of his religious message by the contemporary Jewish community. To his credit, Cole criticized the Egyptian government's 2002 decision to air a TV serial based on The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a virulent anti-Semitic tract fabricated by the Russian secret police at the turn of the twentieth century that alleges an organized Jewish conspiracy to achieve world domination. But the line of argument he uses repeats the same ahistorical belief that the Protocols are a recent alien import to Arab societies that "had no particular resonances in the Muslim world (outside a few radical Muslim cliques) until the past couple of decades." Cole should know better than that. The Protocols have been a staple of Arab-Muslim anti-Semitism since the early twentieth century, published in numerous editions and in several different translations, including one by the brother of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. (Nasser himself would recommend the pamphlet as a useful guide to the "Jewish mind," as would his successor, Anwar Sadat, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Muammar Qaddafi of Libya, and Yasir Arafat, among many others.) Less than a year after their airing on Egyptian television, the Protocols were saliently displayed alongside a Torah scroll in an exhibition at the newly built Alexandria library ... Cole may express offense at the Protocols, but their obsession with the supposed international influence of "world Zionism" resonates powerfully in his own writings. How else can one describe his depiction of U.S. foreign policy as controlled by a ruthless Zionist cabal implanted at the highest echelons of the Bush administration and employing "sneaky methods of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of intelligence" to promote its goals? And what of Cole's claim that the pro-Israel lobby aipac, in alliance with the Christian Right, represents a sinister force controlling congressional decisions on policy toward Israel? "The Founding Fathers of the United States deeply feared that a foreign government might gain this level of control over a branch of the United States government, and their fears have been vindicated," Cole laments. The chairman and CEO of this imaginary Zionist cabal is Israeli premier and Likud leader Ariel Sharon, whom Cole despises--so much so that he cannot bring himself to refer to Sharon without resorting to the vilest invectives. He is the butcher of Beirut, a mafia don, war criminal, land grabber, starver of children, and so on. "Couldn't he shut his enormous pie hole[?]" Cole wonders of Sharon. "Apparently [Bush] has fallen for a line from the neo-cons in his administration that they can deliver the Jewish vote to him in 2004 if only he kisses Sharon's ass," he writes in another post. And all this comes from a historian priding himself on his dispassionate and evenhanded approach. Cole is of course not the first nor the last to argue that U.S. foreign policy has been hijacked by the Jewish state (one recalls Pat Buchanan's description of Congress as Israel's "amen corner"). But, while most anti-Israel (indeed, anti-Jewish) critics tend to hide behind the more neutral term "neocons," Cole does not shy from labeling prominent Jewish members of the Bush administration (or, for that matter, anyone not overtly hateful of Sharon) as "Likudniks." Conscious of the racist overtones of his criticism, Cole attempts to present it as purely businesslike. "Some have attempted to argue that the very term `Neoconservative' is a code word for derogatory attitudes toward Jews," he writes. "This argument is mere special pleading and a playing of the race card, however, insofar as only a tiny percentage of American Jews are Neoconservatives, and only a tiny percentage of Neoconservatives are Jews." True enough. But then why the substitution of the term Likudniks for neocons? And why is it that the Likudniks who most obsess Cole all have names like Wolfowitz, Feith, Perle, Adelman, Ledeen, Gaffney, Wurmser, Pipes, Rubin, or Kristol?" [Or Karsh?]

Israel Police National Serious and International Crimes Unit investigators will return to Israel tomorrow, after gathering evidence in the Netherlands and Austria. The police say they have solid evidence from the Netherlands against Yitzhaki. The main suspicion against Yitzhaki is the issue of 150 duplicate Israeli passports to people who were not entitled to them, in exchange for tens of thousands of dollars and other perks, including stays at luxury hotels."

Representative defends cause for hate crime legislation,

"For the past five years, David Litvak, House of Representatives member representing District 26, has been sponsoring various hate crimes bills, the most recent, HB50, was rejected by the Utah Legislature earlier this year. Litvak spoke Wednesday afternoon at a Weber State University Convocation, discussing his struggles with getting hate crimes legislation passed in Utah. "When I was in junior high, I learned a lesson that I will never forget," Litvak said. He recalled that while living in Minnesota, people had vandalized the Jewish synagogue his family attended. Upon returning home from soccer practice, Litvak found his sister crying, talking with his parents. "My parents sat me down and explained to me that our synagogue had been desecrated the previous night," Litvak said. Swastikas and messages such as "go home kike" were painted all over the building. This was Litvak's first encounter with hate crimes, and it changed his life; he became an advocate against such acts. "When we talk about hate crimes legislation, one of the most critical elements to get across is that hate crimes are a different type of crime," Litvak said; "different because of the intent of the perpetrator, and the impact on the victim." Hate crimes legislation would provide enhanced penalties for attacks motivated by bias or prejudice. Litvak's bill defines "bias or prejudice" as "intentionally selecting the victim based on race, disability, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, age, gender, or other categories." Because HB50 was rejected, Litvak discussed several reasons why he feels the Utah Legislature ignored the 65 percent of Utah citizens who supported the bill. Some legislators felt that creating enhanced penalties would create an unfair justice system, but Litvak disagrees ... Another objection that Litvak's bill faced was from some who believed the bill would punish thought and free speech. Litvak argues that motive is what hate crime legislation would consider, not merely thought itself ... "We will keep trying," Litvak said, "because this bill passed the Senate before, and in 2003 it passed the House. All we have to do now is get it to pass both in the same year." Even in defeat this year, Litvak remains optimistic. "Even in failure there is success," Litvak said, "and I consider it a victory this year even though it died in committee because we have kept the issue before the public. As long as we keep trying, the bill will not die."

"The presence in Israel of some of Russia's most-wanted fugitives is threatening to cloud the historic visit this week by President Vladimir Putin. Three billionaire oil executives, a publishing tycoon and a former Putin ally have all taken up residence in Israel in recent years as Russia sought their arrests, rankling officials in Moscow. On the eve of Putin's arrival Wednesday as the first Russian or Soviet leader to visit Israel, both governments played down any disagreement over the businessmen. Israeli officials conceded Putin might raise the matter, but noted Prime Minister Ariel Sharon insists he won't turn over the wanted men. "They are Israeli citizens and that's it," said Asaf Shariv, a Sharon spokesman. Israel and Russia have had close relations since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Both are involved in battles against Islamic militants, and they are linked by the hundreds of thousands of Russian immigrants now living in Israel. But ties have become strained over Russia's planned sale of anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, an enemy of Israel. Israeli officials dismissed speculation they might bargain to extradite the fugitives in exchange for Russia scrapping the arms deal. The Putin visit also coincides with Wednesday's scheduled verdict in the Russian tax evasion and fraud trial of wealthy Jewish businessman Mikhail Khodorkovsky, former head of the Yukos oil giant. While Putin casts the case as a straightforward anti-corruption effort, some people see anti-Semitic undertones in his campaign against Khodorkovsky and other Jewish tycoons. "The Yukos scandal had a political and maybe Jewish roots," said Roman Bronfman, an Israeli lawmaker who immigrated from the Soviet Union in 1980. The three oil executives living in Israel Leonid Nevzlin, Mikhail Brudno and Vladimir Dubov are former partners of Khodorkovsky and all are wanted by Russia on fraud charges. The men, all of whom appeared on the Forbes list of the world's billionaires in 2004, are now directors of Group Menatep, a holding company that owns 60 percent of what remains of the dismantled Yukos empire. Menatep officials declined comment on Putin's visit, and a spokeswoman for Nevzlin, who also is wanted by Russia in an alleged murder plot, said he would have no comment until after the verdict in Khodorkovsky's case. Also with homes in Israel are Vladimir Gusinsky, a media magnate who fled Russia after being charged with financial misdeeds in a probe widely seen as punishment for his TV station's critical coverage of Putin, and Boris Berezovsky, a one-time Kremlin insider who was charged with fraud after a falling out with Putin. Both men spend most of their time abroad.The five wanted businessmen immigrated under Israel's "Law of Return," which grants automatic citizenship to any Jew ... "I do not intend to turn anyone over," Sharon told the Yediot Ahronot daily. "Since the days of my youth, I have been opposed to turning over Jews. I am saying this in the clearest manner possible." Berezovsky, who said he no longer holds Israeli citizenship but spends significant time in the country, said he found Sharon's comments reassuring. "I'm not afraid of Putin at all," he said from Britain, where he lives in exile. Putin, who has pledged to combat anti-Semitism in Russia, will not seek extradition of the fugitives, said an official in his press service, speaking on condition of anonymity. Israeli lawmaker Yuval Steinitz, chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, said that during his trip to Russia last week, top Russian officials never mentioned the fugitives. "There were plenty of opportunities to do it, and nobody raised it," he said. "It seems to me that nobody really considers this a real obstacle." Alexander Shumilin, a Mideast analyst at Moscow's USA and Canada Institute, said Putin is likely to talk about the businessmen, known in Russia as "the oligarchs." But he added that the Kremlin understands extradition is out of the question."

He emigrated to Israel 15 years ago — one of a million Jews who fled the Soviet Union to escape institutionalised anti-Semitism and economic stagnation. But today he is back in Moscow — with his wife and two children — living an openly Jewish life and running an advertising business. "I just realised that there were so many more opportunities in Russia than in Israel. It is like the difference between New York and Arizona,” Mr Revazov, 38, told The Times. “Almost all my friends in Israel have come back, too.” An estimated 100,000 Jews have returned to Russia in the past few years, sparking a dramatic renaissance of Jewish life in a country with a long history of anti-Semitism. President Putin will cement Russia’s new relationship with its Jewish community today when he begins the first visit to Israel by a Soviet or Russian leader. “This sends a message to the world that the Moscow-Arab coalition is over,” Berl Lazar, one of Russia’s two chief rabbis, said. “It’s eerie that it is happening at Passover. Here, during our holiday, the Russian President is visiting the Holy Land" ... Five years ago, Rabbi Lazar opened a seven-storey, $20 million (£10.5 million) Jewish centre with a synagogue, swimming pool and kosher restaurant, built mostly with donations from abroad. "A survey publicized by the World Jewish Congres this month concluded that current Russian anti-Semitism has its roots in traditional religious and nationalist sensibilities that consider Jews to be "strangers in the Russian landscape and Christ killers." The survey found a common belief that Jews are responsible for the rise of communism and millions of deaths during the Soviet regime. On the other hand, communist extremists blame Jews for the collapse of communism and the Soviet system. In summation, the survey stated that "the meaning of this is that the Communist Party is one of the leaders of the anti-Semitic trend." The most prominent expressions of the current wave of anti-Semitism, besides acts of violence, are two petitions, circulated by leading political and cultural figures and signed by hundreds, calling for the banning of Jewish organizations in Russia. These petitions call Jews "enemies of the [Russian] nation and society" and "anti-Christian and inhumane, to the point of ritual murder." Racism ignored Putin soundly condemned these petitions. Putin also said that his description of statements made by Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko as "Zionist, anti-Russian" slogans was a slip, and that he meant to say, "anti-Semitic, anti-Russian." However, he recently reiterated his claim that "Zionism" had a hand in Ukrainian elections "to the detriment of Russia."... A poll conducted last year found that 42 percent of Russians surveyed believe there is a need to "limit the influence of Jews" in government organizations, politics, business, the judicial system, education and cultural institutions ... The incitement against Jews forced Rabbi Lazar and the new president of the Russian Jewish Congress, Vladimir Sloutsker, to demand that Putin and General Prosecutor Vladimir Ustinov respond. A headline in the Moscow newspaper Kommersant stated, "Jews become constant visitors at the prosecutor" to describe a meeting of these Jewish leaders with Ustinov. But both Lazar, and Sloutsker, a businessman and member of parliament, are Putin's constituents and would not hastily criticize the government ... Renewed anti-Semitism apparently does not frighten all Russian Jews: A significant number of Jews from the former Soviet Union - some say 100,000 - have returned to Russia and Ukraine. But most of them continue to retain their Israeli citizenship. They see themselves as having temporarily left Israel, and even create "Israeli outposts" in major cities. Many work in Jewish organizations, teach in Jewish schools, and are central members of new synagogues. The emigrants say that they left for two reasons: financial difficulty and the fact that they felt like second-class citizens in Israel. But "in Israel they learned not to fear" to be Jews, say synagogue officials. There are Jewish schools in which a third, or more, of the pupils have returned from Israel. They speak Hebrew and encourage other pupils to do so. Thus, a paradox has been created, in which Jews return to the Diaspora despite anti-Semitism, and emigrants from Israel are the backbone of the renaissance in Russian Jewish life."

"Hate Matters: The Need for an Interdisciplinary Field of Hate Studies," published by the American Jewish Committee, sets forth a cogent argument for why a coordinated approach to combating hate is urgently needed. "An interdisciplinary approach is needed because hate impacts all aspects of our lives," said Kenneth S. Stern, AJC's expert on anti-Semitism and extremism, and author of "Hate Matters." "It is not just a matter of a hate group here, a discriminatory practice there. It informs hundreds of wide-ranging concerns, among them, how we prepare our children to live in an increasingly diverse nation, how we train our police, and how America will be viewed by friends and foes around the globe." In his monograph, Stern explores definitions of hate and the varying ways the issue is addressed currently in business, education and government. Stern said he hopes the publication will advance efforts to ingrain an understanding of the roots of hatred, and to develop sounder policies to effectively combat hate. "Not so long ago, the word on Steve Rosen, policy director for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, was that he was so knowledgeable that he trained the group’s board members in the ways of Washington. In his 23 years with the pro-Israel lobbying powerhouse, Rosen’s encyclopedic knowledge of Middle East geopolitics and Beltway power politics nurtured AIPAC’s lay leadership and guided its policies. Now that the same leadership has fired Rosen because, AIPAC says, of information arising out of an FBI investigation into alleged mishandling of classified Pentagon documents, the question is raised: Who will guide AIPAC now? Rosen’s imprint remains in substantial ways: Iran’s threat to Israel, his top priority in recent years, is to be the centerpiece of this year’s AIPAC’s policy conference, which begins May 22. The conference will feature a walk-through exhibit on how close Iran is to developing a nuclear weapon ... Significantly, the only on-the-record statement proffered by AIPAC since JTA revealed last week that AIPAC had fired Rosen and Keith Weissman, its senior Iran analyst, who also has been targeted by the FBI, emphasizes congressional lobbying. “With growing membership, record attendance at events around the country, and continued successes on Capitol Hill, AIPAC is energized and focused on the future,” spokesman Josh Block said. Some of the group’s recent successes on the Hill include backing Congress’ approval of $2.6 billion in foreign aid for this year, extending the duration of Israel’s loan guarantees and attaching strict oversight guidelines to $200 million in assistance to the Palestinian Authority. The Senate also unanimously passed a bill expanding homeland security cooperation between Israel and the United States. The House of Representatives passed a resolution urging the European Union to put Hezbollah on the E.U. terrorist list and overwhelmingly passed two resolutions condemning Syria for its occupation of Lebanon and continued human-rights violations. A key House panel has approved the Iran Freedom and Support Act, which has garnered more than 155 co-sponsors in less than three months since its introduction ... A measure of AIPAC’s determination to reassure its base is its recent willingness to go on the record about its Capitol Hill successes, a sharp reversal of a longstanding policy to play down AIPAC’s influence. AIPAC officials say the grass roots are solidly on board. AIPAC expects 5,000 people at the policy conference, which culminates with a day of show-of-strength lobbying on the Hill. The number is commensurate with previous conferences, AIPAC officials said. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon are slated to address the conference, a show of support from both governments. "It’s like a political take on the old wedding consolation: The professional Jewish world is losing a favored daughter, but it’s gaining a solid entree into the Democratic leadership. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the U.S. House of Representatives’ minority leader, this week hired Reva Price, a veteran Washington Jewish professional who is now Washington director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, to lead congressional Democrats’ Jewish outreach. The departure of Price, who has 22 years of experience working for Jewish organizations in the capital, comes at a sensitive time for the JCPA: It has yet to choose a new executive director since Hannah Rosenthal resigned in January. “Pelosi’s gain is JCPA’s loss,” said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. “But it’s a positive sign; it shows that the Democrats are taking the Jewish community seriously.” ... Price’s hiring is the latest sign that Democrats are not going to rest on their Jewish laurels. Last week the party’s congressional campaign
named Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY), a skilled fund-raiser and a graduate of Jewish communal work, as the chairman of its Jewish outreach council. "For the first time in more than 120 years, a Jewish politician is hoping to lead a major British political party to victory in a general election. If Britain’s Conservative party wins on May 5, Michael Howard will move into No. 10 Downing St., displacing Labor’s Tony Blair. That seems an unlikely outcome, however. The honeymoon is long over for Blair eight years after his 1997 landslide victory — especially as a result of his support for the war in Iraq — but polls still show Labor firmly in the lead. Few expect Howard to become the first prime minister of Jewish origin since Benjamin Disraeli in the 1870s. And Jewish voters are unlikely to be swayed by the Tory leader’s ethnic origins. “Howard’s Jewishness is not really an issue,” says Barry Kosmin, executive director of the Institute for Jewish Policy research. “He’s not terribly associated with the Jewish community and has tended to distance himself from the Jewish agenda.” Still, Howard’s roots have figured in an occasionally ugly pre-election campaign. There were accusations of anti-Semitism when Labor published a series of trial posters in January featuring the faces of Howard and his shadow foreign secretary, Oliver Letwin — who also is Jewish — superimposed on pigs’ bodies. Another image showed Howard looking like Fagin, the old Jew who oversaw a gang of child ruffians in Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist.” Some Jewish community figures feared the proposed poster campaign, which was quickly withdrawn, was a subliminal way to tell the electorate that the two most high-profile opposition politicians in Britain are Jewish. “It may well have had some undertones” of anti-Jewish prejudice, says Eric Moonman, president of the Zionist federation and a former Labor legislator. “I think it was a cheap piece of ignorance by Labor.” Suspicions were further raised by an article a Cabinet minister published in the Muslim Weekly newspaper arguing that only Labor could stand up for British Muslims and work toward the creation of a Palestinian state. “Ask yourself what will Michael Howard do for British Muslims? Will his foreign policy aim to help Palestine?” Mike O’Brien, minister of trade and industry, wrote in the newspaper. “There’s been a lot of innuendo,” Kosmin says ... The Jewish vote is fairly evenly split between the two main parties, and Jews’ numbers and concentration make them a significant factor in up to 15 districts. Experts warn against dismissing the community’s political strength. “Anyone who says the Jewish vote is not important doesn’t know about politics,” says David Mencer, former director of the lobby group Labor Friends of Israel and a Labor councilor in the London borough of Barnet. “You need to appeal to the Jewish community because they are an excellent barometer” of the consensus, Mencer says ... Jewish support is also important for another reason, Kosmin adds: Not only do community members hold many senior roles in business, they’re among the most prominent contributors to party coffers. “Both parties have significant Jewish funders,” Kosmin says, pointing to a top Labor fund-raiser, Lord Michael Levy, and a former Tory treasurer, Sir Stanley Kalms. Jews long have been deeply involved in British political life. With some 20 Jewish legislators, the community is disproportionately represented in Parliament. When they were an immigrant working-class community Jews overwhelmingly supported Labor. But as Labor became increasing radicalized in the 1970s — and as its sympathies moved away from Israel toward the Arabs — Jews drifted away from the party. That coincided with the era of Margaret Thatcher, who was staunchly pro-Israel and an outspoken admirer of the Jewish community: At one time five Jews served in her Cabinet. Thatcher’s business-friendly economic policies also appealed to an increasingly prosperous Jewish constituency. The rise of Blair changed the equation again. “Blair has come closer to the Jewish community than anyone since Thatcher,” says Mencer, pointing to the prime minister’s defense of shechita — Jewish ritual slaughter — support for Jewish schools and support of Israel. Blair also has made a point of wooing Jewish community institutions, and recently was the featured guest at the annual dinner of the Board of Deputies, the representative body of British Jewry ... The Zionist Federation, in partnership with the Christian Friends of Israel, produced a general election questionnaire. The group wants supporters to ask candidates whether they would condemn all calls for academic or economic boycotts of Israel, insist on strict Palestinian adherence to its anti-terror responsibilities under the “road map” peace plan, ensure aid to the Palestinian Authority was properly audited and support Israel’s continued control of an undivided Jerusalem. Mencer insists that Labor policy means “Israel has no better friend in the world outside the U.S. than Britain,” but others point to an ideological movement within the party that some Jews find hard to stomach. Since the start of the Palestinian intifada in September 2000 and the Sept. 11 terror attacks a year later, some Labor members have gone back to their radical roots, Kosmin says. That trend is typified by Ken Livingstone, the anti-Israel mayor of London who sparked outrage for comparing a Jewish reporter to a concentration camp guard and who has called Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon a war criminal. Livingstone “is a symbol of why Jews turned away from Labor in the 1980s,” Kosmin says. That means, he adds, “There will probably be slightly fewer Jewish votes for Labor than last time.”

"Monday night the Tufts Community Union Judiciary (TCUJ) granted official recognition as a student group to the Jewish group, Chabad. Monday's decision marked the end to a drawn-out process for Chabad, which included failing to correctly define the organization as religious, and problems fitting the group into Tufts policy. "I am mostly relieved that the process is finally over," junior and group president Esther Volchek said. "It was a long and arduous process but in the end we succeeded in getting the group approved." "The [TCUJ] is always seeking to enhance the diversity of the Tufts campus and add new student organizations that might fulfill a niche," TCUJ Vice-Chair sophomore Jake Resnicow said. "Clearly, Chabad demonstrated that there was a significant desire for a Chabad student organization to be recognized at Tufts." ... The TCUJ delayed its vote once this policy was brought to its attention and the case was taken up by the Office of the University Chaplain ... "We had a lot of problems with the Chabad group fitting into the constitution as set up by University Chaplaincy," said Reverend David O'Leary, the University Chaplain at Tufts. "Once the group fit into those standards, they were accepted by the Chaplaincy." O'Leary had concern that Chabad and Hillel would overlap. Nearly 500 boxes weighing more than 20,000 pounds are expected to arrive in June at the Ransom Center, where they will be processed and eventually made available to scholars and the public. Mailer will speak at the university Wednesday and will officially announce the purchase of the collection. A final agreement to sell the archives for $2.5 million was signed Thursday. New York bookseller Glenn Horowitz contacted Ransom Center director Tom Staley late last year about buying the Mailer archives. The purchase price will be paid over five years, half of it paid by the university and half by the Ransom Center, according to published reports Monday in the Austin American-Statesman and The New York Times. "In a crowded room on the edge of the Air Force Academy, Chaplain Melinda Morton was doing her bit for culture change. She dimmed the lights and rolled the video. It was Mel Gibson in a scene from the film "We Were Soldiers" addressing his troops on the eve of battle. "We are moving into the valley of the shadow of death," he said solemnly. "Where you will watch the back of the man next to you, as he will watch yours, and you won't care what color he is, or by what name he calls his God." Morton stopped the tape, and flicked on the lights. "In past years we have had incidences of spiritual insensitivity here at the academy," she told the 25 civilian and military personnel in the room. "Sometimes it was out of ignorance, but sometimes it was out of maliciousness. Respect is essential for mission success." Morton was teaching an RSVP — Respecting the Spiritual Values of all People — class, a 50-minute exercise in trying to stop what critics say is a culture of intolerance on campus. Over the past four years, there have been 55 complaints of insensitivity, many dealing with alleged harassment of religious minorities by evangelical Christians. Cadets and employees are being told they can't proselytize on campus, use government e-mail to send religious messages, put up posters with religious themes or use positions of authority to endorse a particular faith. They must also attend one RSVP class. About 90 percent of cadets here are Christian and many of them, as well as teachers and high-ranking officers, are evangelical. Academy Commandant Brig. Gen. Johnny Weida is a self-described born-again Christian. Last year, football coach Fisher DeBerry hung a banner in the athletic complex that said, "I am a Christian first and last ... I am a member of Team Jesus Christ." He later removed it and underwent sensitivity counseling. When the film "The Passion of the Christ" came out, some cadets hung posters and sent hundreds of e-mails on campus computers urging people to see it. Lt. Col. Edie Disler, an English professor who helps run RSVP programs, said some Christians questioned the value of the classes. "They have said, 'We are in the majority, why do we have to do this?' " she said. Mikey Weinstein, an academy graduate and lawyer in Albuquerque, N.M., has a son who is a sophomore at the school. The cadet has been called a "filthy Jew" among other things, Weinstein said. "This is not a Jew-Christian thing, it's an evangelical versus everyone else thing," he said."

"The Anti-Defamation League released a statement Thursday saying it was seriously concerned about reports of religious harassment at the Air Force Academy and offered to provide help in controlling it. Bruce H. DeBoskey, mountain states regional director for the group, said he supported the recent efforts of academy superintendent Lt. Gen. John Rosa to implement religious sensitivity training at the academy. The classes were a response to complaints that evangelical Christians wield so much influence at the school that anti-Semitism and other forms of religious harassment have become pervasive. The prestigious military school in Colorado Springs plans to give sensitivity training to all 4,000 cadets by June 1. “ADL has offered its assistance to the Academy to assess the nature of the problem, and to provide its expertise and resources for training on issues of diversity and religious freedom,” DeBoskey said in the statement. DeBoskey said that as the nation’s future Air Force officers, cadets must be trained to not promote any religion. [Except Judeocentric hedonism, materialism, and apartheid Israel.] Critics say evangelical Christians have created an atmosphere of religious harassment at the Academy, and that some actions by academy commanders have contributed to the climate. A handful of voting districts have been moved to accommodate some Orthodox Jewish residents who do not want to vote in churches or parish centers for religious reasons, said Alfonso L. Santoro, executive supervisor for the Ocean County Board of Elections. Rabbi Moshe Zev Weisberg said the move to change polling sites was not an organized effort by officials from Beth Medrash Govoha, the rabbinical college here. In fact, for years, college officials voted in churches. "It is acceptable for Orthodox Jews to vote in houses of worship as long as religious symbols are not prominently displayed," Weisberg said. [i.e., a church has to hide what it is.] Mayor Charles Cunliffe criticized county officials for making the switches without any announcement. Residents learned of the changes this week as sample ballots for the Board of Education election were mailed to Lakewood's 34,145 registered voters. "People are livid about the polling place," he said. Cunliffe said the first time he learned of the polling site change was when he looked at his sample ballot, which arrived this week. "I'd like to know why did they do that," Cunliffe said. Santoro said the answer is a court order from last November's general election. That day, Superior Court Judge Vincent J. Grasso signed an order that allowed voters "who for religious reasons object to and cannot enter the polling place designated for their actual district" to vote at an alternate district. So to avoid a challenge in the next election — which is the school board election Tuesday — county officials decided to remove polling places from churches and synagogues in Lakewood, Santoro said ... A county survey found 10 polling places in churches in other communities, but because no complaints were filed in those towns — Jackson, Dover Township, Brick, Lacey, Long Beach Township and Stafford — no changes were made. The modernizers, with their appeal to women and more generally to the young, are seen to strike at the very heart of the Islamic order -- the state, the schoolroom, the market, and even the family. The fundamentalists view the Westerners and their dupes and disciples, the Westernizers, as not only impeding the predestined advance of Islam to final triumph in the world, but even endangering it in its homelands. Unlike reformers, fundamentalists perceive the problem of the Muslim world to be not insufficient modernization, but an excess of modernization -- and even modernization itself. For them, democracy is an alien and infidel intrusion, part of the larger and more pernicious influence of the Great Satan and his cohorts ... In a genuinely free election, fundamentalists would have several substantial advantages over moderates and reformers. One is that they speak a language familiar to Muslims. Democratic parties promote an ideology and use a terminology mostly strange to the "Muslim street." The fundamentalist parties, on the other hand, employ familiar words and evoke familiar values both to criticize the existing secularist, authoritarian order and to offer an alternative. To broadcast this message, the fundamentalists utilize an enormously effective network that meets and communicates in the mosque and speaks from the pulpit. None of the secular parties has access to anything comparable ... The creation of a democratic political and social order in Iraq or elsewhere in the Middle East will not be easy. But it is possible, and there are increasing signs that it has already begun ... "Passover is the holiday of chumres, or ultra-strict observance of Jewish law, in ultra-Orthodox jargon, and people have their own particular stringencies, inherited from their parents. Who can tell whether lettuce-hanging was a personal quirk or a custom originating in some tiny community in Poland? The list of new stringencies and new products that boast they are kosher for Passover, which grows each year, makes it seem that the ultra-Orthodox are obsessed with a fear of leaven. Stores in ultra-Orthodox areas carry kosher-for-Pesach items that have nothing to do with food, such as soap, toilet paper, and even bleach. If matters of kashrut provide grist for the scandal mills all year long - like this year's crisis over wigs made with hair sold at shrines in India, or various types of beef imported from South America - worrying over Passover kashrut is part and parcel of pre-holiday hysteria. This year, for example, the independent ultra-Orthodox newspaper Mishpacha reported on a Yeshiva student who raised concern over the pages in Passover Hagaddahs. The paper may contain starch, and starch may have leaven. In other words, the student asked, what if the starch contains flour that could rise if dressing from the salad fell on the Hagaddah, and what if it went from there to the plate? ... Rabbi Yehoshua Koifman, the kashrut supervisor of the Hatam Sofer school that is considered particularly strict in its kashrut requirements, says he found himself rejecting a number of what he called "strange" requests to pronounce various products kosher. "Last year people asked us to pronounce pacifiers, bottles, and even toothbrushes kosher," he says, bemused. "I asked the manufacturer why he wanted the seal, and he said `because it helps sales.' " Asked why he approved products as kosher when it was not necessary to do so, Koifman responded that they were all items that went into the mouth. "But in the case of a broom, that is going too far." In regular matters of kashrut the principle of batel bashisim applies, whereby a very tiny amount of meat is "nullified" if it comes into contact with milk. But when it comes to leaven during Passover, no amount is insignificant. Thus it has become a prohibited but slippery, almost symbolic entity that can appear in the form of miniscule crumbs and hidden components of food that can be spied only with a microscope. Hassidic sects, for example, are concerned that tiny grains of flour remaining on matza might rise and become leavened if they come into contact with a liquid. One explanation for hanging the lettuce out to dry, a Jerusalem hassid suggests, is to allay the fear of water touching the two matzas between which the lettuce is placed and eaten at the korech stage of the seder. Matza in cling-wrap Moshe Grylak, who wrote a book about the ultra-Orthodox, explains that the stringencies on Passover stem from the fact that leaven symbolizes the evil impulse, and therefore it is to be avoided as much as possible ... Members of Habad eat their matza out of cling-wrap to avoid any contact with liquid. Vishnitz hassids do not eat fish on Passover in spite of other hassidic dictates that require the eating of fish on the Sabbath and holidays, out of concern that the fish may have been fed with food containing leaven. In certain homes, mostly hassidic, tomatoes and peppers are not eaten
on Passover because they cannot be peeled, and may have been touched during the harvest by people who have come into contact with leaven ... Even tap water is not kosher Israel Brandt, a hassid of the Karliner sect, says he does not trust the water that comes from the National Water Carrier to be kosher for Pesach. He therefore prepares all his drinking and cooking water before the holiday in bottles, drawing it from a spring near road 443 adjacent to home community of Beit Horon. He also does not want to depend on any particular seal of kashrut. Not only does he bake his own matzas, he harvests the wheat with his own hands, together with family and friends."

An executive union meeting heard unanswered orations against Israel by Sue Blackwell and Shereen Benjamin, both lecturers at Birmingham University. They labeled Israel a "colonial apartheid state, more insidious than South Africa," called for the "removal of this regime" and depicted Israeli universities as "repressing" academic freedom. The speeches were met with applause before AUT executive president Angela Roger cut short the session and moved to deny a right of reply to opponents of the motions. "Lack of time" was cited as the reason preventing challenges to the motions from being heard. The executive passed separate motions adopting boycotts against the University of Haifa and Bar-Ilan University by sizable majorities. A third boycott proposal against the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was dropped after delegates questioned the evidence of an alleged case of Palestinian land confiscation by the university."

Roots of Anti-Semitism Run Deep, Poll Finds,

"Nearly 35 million U.S. citizens -- 14 percent of the adult population -- hold ”strong” anti-Semitic beliefs, according to a new nationwide survey by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) watchdog group. ”When it comes to Jews, old stereotypes die hard,” said Abraham Foxman, ADL's national director, ”especially about loyalty, the death of Jesus, and power.” For more than 40 years, one of the most stable and telling indicators of anti-Jewish prejudice in the United States has been the question of fundamental Jewish loyalty to the U.S. The survey found that 33 percent of U.S. citizens believe Jews are more loyal to Israel than the United States, no change from 2002. In 1998, it was 31 percent; in 1992; 35 percent. The 2005 ”Survey of American Attitudes Towards Jews in America”, a national poll of 1,600 adults conducted in March, found that 30 percent of respondents believe Jews were responsible for the death of Christ, up from 25 percent in 2002. Previous ADL surveys over the last decade had indicated that anti-Semitism was in decline. Seven years ago, the number of U.S. citizens with hardcore anti-Semitic beliefs had dropped to 12 percent, from 20 percent in 1992 ... Ken Jacobson, Associate National Director of ADL, told IPS, ”It's true that the experience of Jews in America is different from that in many other parts of the world, such as Europe and the Middle East. Jews have become assimilated and accepted in American society. But what the survey tells us is that even America is not immune from anti-Semitism.” ”While there are many factors at play, the findings suggest that anti-Semitic beliefs endure and resonate with a substantial segment of the population.” ... Stereotypes [!!!!!!] about ”Jewish power” in the U.S. have replaced many of the classic ethnic stereotypes previously attributed to Jewish Americans. The survey revealed that while the percentage of people who believe Jews have too much power has diminished -- 15 percent, down from 20 percent in 2002 [A testament to successful Jewish censorial fascism about this] -- those who hold the most anti-Semitic views are preoccupied with perceptions of Jewish control. Those who believe that Jews have too much power in the business world have declined in the general population, from 23 percent in 2002 to 19 percent this year. But this view is held by 80 percent of the most anti-Semitic Americans. The survey also revealed that 35 percent of foreign-born Hispanics hold hardcore anti-Semitic beliefs, (down from 44 percent), while 19 percent of Hispanics born in the U.S. fall into the same category. The number of African-Americans with strong anti-Semitic beliefs has remained high and stable since 1992. The 2005 survey found that 36 percent of African-Americans hold strong anti-Semitic beliefs, four times more than the 9 percent for whites. ”We are heartened to see some progress in the Hispanic community,” said Foxman. However, ”We continue to remain troubled and somewhat at a loss to understand why African-Americans consistently have such strong anti-Semitic propensities.” [ Hey, Foxman! You greasy liar!
