"A member of the U.S. Congress calls for an assistant professor at a major university to be summarily fired. The right-wing tabloid press runs a series of vicious attacks on him, often misquoting him and perpetuating previous misquotes. Opinion pieces attacking "tenured radicals" and questioning professors' patriotism use him as their centerpiece. All of these attacks are spurred by a propaganda film made by an advocacy group, in which anonymous accusations are made and the professor is not given an opportunity to respond to the allegations. It is not 1953, the Congress member is not Sen. Joseph McCarthy, and the professor is not being accused of being a communist. No, it is 2005, the Congress member is Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., and the professor is being accused of being anti-Israel. The lesson for academics, and American society as a whole: McCarthyism is unacceptable except when criticism of Israel is involved. The targeted professor is Joseph Massad, of the Middle East Languages and Cultures Department at Columbia University. Massad is the author of "Colonial Effects: The Making of National Identity in Jordan" (Columbia University Press, 2001), and of a forthcoming book treating the sexual depictions of Arabs in colonial literature, "Desiring Arabs." He is well-published, and his first book received rave reviews in journals such as Choice and the American Historical Review. His career would have been no more controversial than that of any academic historian working on Argentina or Uganda, had he not been a Palestinian-American teaching about Israel and Palestine in New York City. Nor, had he been critical of Argentinean or Ugandan policies, would any eyebrows have been raised in the United States. The attacks on Massad, and two other professors in the department, were led by off-campus right-wing Zionist organizations aligned with Israel's Likud Party -- notably a murky Boston-based organization called "the David Project," which produced the film in which the accusations were made. (In fact, according to an in-depth report by Scott Sherman in the Nation, there is no single "film"; at least six versions exist, and it has never been screened for the public. When the Nation asked to view it, the David Project refused to make it available. Its head, Charles Jacobs, also refused to provide details to the Nation about the group's financial backers or its ties to professional pro-Israel lobbyists.) Almost none of the allegations against Massad (anti-Semitism, mistreatment of students, likening Israel to Nazi Germany) came from students who had taken his courses. In the most serious case, an allegation that Massad angrily told a student, "If you're going to deny the atrocities being committed against Palestinians, then you can get out of my classroom," the charge was corroborated by one other student and one auditor, but three other individuals present said they had no recollection of the episode taking place, and it did not appear in Massad's teaching evaluations. Columbia president Lee Bollinger appointed an ad hoc faculty grievance committee to look into the accusations. After a lengthy investigation, the committee issued a report. It found Massad not guilty of anti-Semitism or of punishing pro-Israel students with poor grades ... Although it was little noted in the press, the report did indeed acknowledge that Massad in particular and the department in general had been the target of an ongoing campaign of intimidation. It noted that for several years, after pieces appeared in the tabloid press blasting the department as anti-Israel, many non-students, clearly hostile and with ideological agendas, had been attending classes in the department, interrupting lectures with hostile asides and inhibiting classroom debate. One individual began filming a class without permission. Chillingly, the report noted, "Testimony that we received indicated that in February 2002 Professor Massad had good reason to believe that a member of the Columbia faculty was monitoring his teaching and approaching his students, requesting them to provide information on his statements in class as part of a campaign against him." Whether the disputed charges against Massad, fomented by outside groups with obvious agendas, merited a major investigation by Columbia is a matter of debate. Many students and faculty at Columbia believe the investigation should never have been launched in the first place ...One would have thought that the ad hoc report would have closed the door on this whole sorry affair. But almost worse than the McCarthyite accusations was the response of the New York Times. Incredibly, the Times slammed the ad hoc committee for not being inquisitorial enough. Not satisfied with an investigation of conduct or classroom civility, it wanted Massad's views put under the microscope. The Gray Lady apparently wanted him sent for reeducation, for all the world as though he were a Right Deviationist during the Chinese Cultural Revolution and as though America's newspaper of record were a Maoist inquisitor. The Times' editorial read, "But in the end, the report is deeply unsatisfactory because the panel's mandate was so limited. Most student complaints were not really about intimidation, but about allegations of stridently pro-Palestinian, anti-Israeli bias on the part of several professors. The panel had no mandate to examine the quality and fairness of teaching. That leaves the university to follow up on complaints about politicized courses and a lack of scholarly rigor as part of its effort to upgrade the department. One can only hope that Columbia will proceed with more determination and care than it has heretofore." The New York Times editorial is among the more dangerous documents threatening higher education in America to have appeared in a major newspaper since the McCarthy period, when professors were fired for their views on economics." [Cole is afraid to head in the obvious direction. The New York Times is owned by the Jewish Sulzberger family and is top-heavy, as always, with Jewish editors.]

"A secret FBI report, obtained by ABC News, identifies 22 domestic terror organizations as the current subjects of 338 active FBI field investigations. The Aryan Nations, and other white supremacist groups, are cited in the report for hate crimes, fire bombings, threats via mail, as well as robberies and murders. The National Alliance, one of the largest neo-Nazi organizations in the world, is subject to 51 FBI investigations alone, according to the report. In fact there are "ticking time bombs," said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, "who have the capacity, skill and hatred to carry out acts worse than what Timothy McVeigh carried out 10 years ago." Levin, and other terrorism experts, say that the Internet has become the principal recruitment tool, attracting the loners and the disturbed who boast of finding viable U.S. targets. "We are likely to see more terrorist attacks by lone wolves, or small cells," Levin said, "They're in their bedroom accessing bomb-making information on the Net, and accessing hateful rhetoric which empowers them."

Investigators Probing Abramoff's Finances Have Found That Some Money Meant for His Charity Went to Fight the Palestinian Intifada, Yahoo! News, April 24, 2005
"Newsweek has learned that investigators probing supperlobbyist Jack Abramoff's finances have found some of the money meant for a charity he started for inner-city kids went instead to fight the Palestinian intifada. In 2002 alone, records show, three Indian tribes donated nearly $1.1 million to the Capital Athletic Foundation. The group of Indian tribes had hired Abramoff to protect their interests in Washington, after they opened up lucrative gaming casinos. Donating to the fund had a side benefit, Abramoff told his clients: it was a favored cause of Rep. Tom DeLay. More than $14,000 of foundation funds were actually sent to the Israeli West Bank where they were used by a Jewish settler to mobilize against the Palestinian uprising, reports Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff in the May 2 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, April 25). Among the expenditures: purchases of camouflage suits, sniper scopes, night-vision binoculars, a thermal imager and other material described in foundation records as "security" equipment. The FBI, sources tell Newsweek, is now examining these payments as part of a larger investigation to determine if Abramoff defrauded his Indian tribe clients. The tribal donors are outraged. "This is almost like outer-limits bizarre," says Henry Buffalo, a lawyer for the Saginaw Chippewa Indians who contributed $25,000 to the Capital Athletic Foundation at Abramoff's urging. "The tribe would never have given money for this." Abramoff, a legendary lobbyist particularly close to DeLay, is also a fierce supporter of Israel -- "a super-Zionist," one associate says. That may explain why Abramoff's paramilitary gear ended up in the town of Beitar Illit, a sprawling ultra-Orthodox outpost whose residents have occasionally tangled with their Palestinian neighbors. At least some of the equipment appears to have come from Abramoff's law firm. An August 2002 invoice obtained by newsweek shows that $773 worth of paramilitary gear -- including sniper shooting mats and "hydration tactical tubes" -- was shipped to one of Abramoff's aides at the law firm where the lobbyist then worked. Reached last week, Schmuel Ben-Zvi, an American emigre who, the lobbyist told associates, was an old friend he knew from Los Angeles, angrily denied any knowledge of Abramoff or being involved in any efforts to obtain security gear. The West Bank security payments are not the only foundation expenditure being eyed by investigators. The bulk of the foundation's money, about $4 million, was used for a now-defunct Orthodox Jewish school in suburban Maryland that two of Abramoff's sons attended. Buffalo says his tribe had no idea its donations were being used for this purpose, either. A spokesman for Abramoff vigorously defended all of the expenditures. Abramoff, says spokesman Andrew Blum, "is an especially strong supporter of Israel and has tried to find ways to help Israelis and others to be less susceptible to terrorist attacks."

"A leading union voted yesterday to boycott two Israeli universities which it accused of being complicit in the abuse of Palestinians in the occupied territories. The Association of University Teachers voted to sever links with Haifa and Bar-Ilan universities, and said it would consider boycotting
a third. The Board of Deputies of British Jews called the vote "blinkered, irresponsible and dangerous". Jocelyn Prudence, who heads the Universities and Colleges Employers Association, told the Guardian: "This would appear to run contrary to contractual law, race and religious discrimination law, and academic freedom obligations, which are built into the contracts of staff in pre-1992 universities." Sue Blackwell, a lecturer at Birmingham University who co-wrote the motion, said she was overwhelmed by the result at the AUT's annual conference in Eastbourne. "We now have a boycott against a quarter of the universities in Israel, and we intend to continue the fight," she said. "I am proud today to be a member of a union that is prepared to stand up for human rights around the world." In recent weeks, the debate has focused international attention on the union, which represents 48,000 lecturers in mostly pre-1992 universities. Last night the deputy Israeli ambassador in London, Zvi Ravner, told the Guardian that he was amazed and disturbed by the AUT's decision. "Are they really intending to boycott the Palestinians and the Israeli Arabs who study and work in these institutions, or are they really calling for a boycott of Jews?" he asked. "The last time that Jews were boycotted in universities was in 1930s Germany." Danny Stone, of the Union of Jewish Students, urged the government to establish an inquiry into extremism on campuses - among students and staff. However, sources in the Palestinian Authority welcomed "a gesture of solidarity with the Palestinian people", and hoped that "more international groups will put pressure on Israel". Omar Barghouti, a founder of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, said: "The taboo has been shattered at last. From now on, it will be acceptable to compare Israel's apartheid system to its South African predecessor." The AUT claimed Haifa University had restricted the academic freedom of staff who spoke out against government policies. Bar-Ilan was boycotted because of its links to a college in the disputed settlement of Ariel."

The groups that came together have been working on the local level in cities from Alaska to Boston fighting slum landlords, speaking out against sweatshops, supporting low-wage workers and immigrant rights and forging alliances with Hispanic and African-American community organizations ... Rosenthal believes a national network of social action groups can complement social service efforts undertaken by synagogue groups. The latter engage Jews who already are affiliated, he points out; activist groups like his own draw in Jews who often have not affiliated, and allows them to work for social change from a Jewish perspective ... " There are a lot of people for whom social action can be the gateway for involvement in the Jewish community, a doorway into their synagogue," he said. "It's particularly true for young people because there are fewer doors open for them." ... One piece missing from the conference was the organized Jewish world. Nancy Kaufman, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Boston, was the lone representative of what she called the "establishment," and that didn't make her happy. More than 100 participants marched to Chicago's Congress Plaza Hotel, where low-wage workers have been on strike for 22 months to protest salary and benefits cuts. A small delegation led by Rabbi Bruce Elder of Congregation Hakafah of Glencoe, Ill., entered the lobby and asked to speak to the hotel's owner or on-site manager, both of whom are Jewish. "Given that the owner is Jewish and that this incredible travesty of justice is happening to workers who are not Jewish, our religious principles dictate it's wrong to oppress your workers," said Elder, explaining why he thought the situation required a Jewish response. The delegation was met by a security guard and threatened with arrest. "I wasn't there to get arrested," Elder said. "My intention is not to be confrontational. The fact that he doesn't want to meet with his fellow Jews, face to face, says something to me."

"Belgian extreme-right party Vlaams Belang has a long history of racial incitement and intolerance. But now the Flemish nationalist group is gaining support from an unlikely source: Antwerp's large Jewish community. Last year, Belgium's supreme court upheld a verdict that found the far-right Vlaams Blok guilty of "permanent incitement to segregation and racism." The ruling shut down the anti-immigration party, but it was quickly reformed under the new moniker Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest). The previous incarnation of the party was long one of the most popular political groupings in Belgium's Dutch-speaking Flanders region. But Vlaams Belang is even garnering support in the most unexpected places. Apparently fear of Arab immigrants is driving members of Antwerp's Jewish community to support the right-wing extremists. An estimated 20,000 Jews live in Flanders' largest city, of which many are active in the city's famous diamond trade. Antwerp also has a growing number of Arab immigrants, mostly from North Africa. Friction between the two groups has surged in recent years, culminating in the death of a Jewish boy who was killed by a group of Arab youths. As anger over the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has spilled onto Belgium's streets, some Jews have found themselves feeling more and more threatened. That has led them to support some of the polices of Vlaams Belang, which supports ending immigration from Islamic countries. "Just because the Jews experienced the Holocaust doesn't mean that they're all democrats and have stopped being racist. And if you say the problem will be solved if you send all Arabs back home, many don't even consider that racist," Henri Rosenberg, a Jewish lawyer in Antwerp, said. Some from the city's Jewish community say the inherent Jewish-Arab conflict is aggravated by the social standing of the two groups in Antwerp. Whereas many Jews work in the diamond trade, many new Arab immigrants are poor. "One reason for the current anti-Semitism is that many youths from North Africa haven't found their place yet. They are often unemployed and are upset about the news from the Middle East. They want to move this conflict over here, which naturally worries us," said Eli Ringer, head of a non-religious Jewish forum in Antwerp. It's an open secret that many Jews voted for the Flemish nationalist in the last election and with their support Vlaams Belang hopes to take control of Antwerp in a municipal vote in the next couple of years. "It's clear that a minority of the Jewish community, as a sign of their desperation or dissatisfaction, could vote for a extreme-right party. Some people live constantly with anti-Semitic aggression and they feel the authorities aren't doing anything about it," said Ringer. Some observers believe Vlaams Belang is actively courting Jews to reform the party's image of being anti-Semitic. Following the death of the Jewish boy at the hands of Arabs, there were political flyers distributed touting the nationalists as the solution to the Jews' problems. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" read the message. "I think Vlaams Belang is right in thinking that Jews could be their tactical allies when it's about getting rid of the Arabs or at least those Arabs that commit crimes," said Rosenberg. "It's very symbolic for Vlaams Belang. It's the chance to show they aren't anti-Semitic."

The two other countries are Britain and Ukraine, Sharansky told Interfax. "Information available to us suggests that the situation has deteriorated and anti-Semitic moods have been growing in Russia," Sharansky said. He said that his earlier statements claiming that there is no anti- Semitism and that Israel is not being demonized in Russian soceity, have been overshadowed by a renewal of anti-Semitism over the past couple of years. "We've been registering episodes of anti-Semitism in your country. One must admit, however, that they were less open and not so numerous as in Western European countries," Sharansky said. "The tide of such moods is not so strong in Russia as in other countries. But it has begun," he said. Sharansky said President Vladimir Putin will hopefully discuss ways to combat anti-Semitism and other manifestations of extremism during his visit to Israel."

A meeting of the US-Israel Joint Economic Development Group that ended Monday agreed that the guarantees be authorized in annual, one-billion-dollar tranches, according to the statement issued by the State Department. The mechanism was agreed upon following a US Congress decision to extend the period of a Loan Guarantee Program to Israel to 2008. "The delegations agreed on the broad terms for release" of the 2005 tranche of one billion dollars, the statement said, adding that the remaining two billion dollars would be released based on economic reform and fiscal restraint by Israel."

"Some 60% of factories in Israel exceeded in the past year permitted pollution levels set by the Environment Ministry, according to a ministerial report published Monday.Last year, some 156 surprise visits were made to 34 factories, during which samples were taken from factory chimneys. Irregularities were found in large factories including Israel Bromine and Teva Tek in Ramat Hovav, where a deviation of some 100% was found in nitrogen oxide emissions. At the Rotem Amferet factory, in the Rotem plateau, emissions of one pollutant stood at 38330% beyond the permitted level, while emissions of two other pollutants stood at hundreds and thousands of percentages beyond allowed levels. Significant irregularities were also found at the Haifa Chemicals plant. Among the emissions are extremely poisonous materials, including methane chloride and chlorobromethane, which can damage the nervous system. It should be noted that after the material is scattered from the chimneys and descents, the concentration of the materials is significantly reduced. Major emissions irregularities were also found at hospitals. At Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem, an exception of tens of thousands of percent was reported in emission levels of ethylene oxide, a carcinogen, and a similar rate was reported at Bikur Holim Hospital in Jerusalem.Environment Minister Shalom Simhon said after the publication of the report that the ministry was implementing measures to enforce regulations in factories in which irregularities were found, and that criminal investigation files have been opened. Similar remarks were made by Simhon's predecessors in the ministry, and no decrease in emission levels has been made. On the contrary, there has been a slight increase in the number of factories that pollute."

"In contravention of international law Israel plans to dump 10,000 tons of garbage in the West Bank each month. The controvserial move will jeopardize Palestinian water sources. Haaretz newspaper reported Monday that dump operators plan to deposit some 10,000 tons of garbage from the Dan and Sharon regions every month in what was known as the Abu Shusha quarry, the largest in the West Bank. In the last few days trucks and bulldozers have been covering the quarry's floor with brown soil to turn it into a garbage dump. Huge semi-trailer trucks are to bring the Sharon and Dan garbage, which will be amassed at the Hadarim garbage station near Tel Mond prison, to the quarry. The initiative started out as an idea to rehabilitate a 15-dunam plot in the quarry by filling it with building waste, junk and shredded tires. It evolved into a huge project spread over dozens of dunams for household garbage, operated as a private business and expected to yield tens of millions of Israeli shekels. Transferring Israeli garbage to the West Bank will be much cheaper for the operators than taking it to a site in Israel. Transferring the Israeli garbage to Samaria will bring the contracting company a profit of NIS 6 per ton, totaling some NIS 60,000 a month. Israel's construction and operation of the Kedumim dump appears to be in violation of international law, as it involves transferring garbage to territory defined as occupied, said the Haaretz report. Experts warn that the dump would jeopardize the Mountain Aquifer, one of the largest freshwater sources in Israel and Palestine. This is because the dump, which was originally used for "dry waste," will receive and absorb household garbage with organic substances. It is unclear whether the procedures for constructing and operating the dump on state land were carried out according to the law, or how bulldozers are working at the site before a final construction permit has been issued. West Bank sources say the reason for the civil administration's inaction is that everyone is afraid of Daniella Weiss, the council head of Kedumim, one of the owners of Baron Park. The biggest mystery is how the operator, D.S.H., was allowed to build and operate a very profitable waste site on state land without any tender being issued, as required by law. The Kedumim dump will create an absurd situation. The West Bank is filled with illegal Palestinian garbage dumps, which constitute serious environmental hazards and jeopardize the groundwater, because the civil administration refuses to let Palestinians build modern waste disposal sites. The most modern dump being built there - the Kedumim dump - is intended only for garbage from Israel. "We are dealing with a double crime," says former Israeli environment minister Yossi Sarid. "On the one hand, Israel is preventing the Palestinians from making use of the quarry and its resources, and in exchange we are giving them Sharon's garbage. I believe this is a violation of international treaties." Iche Meir, the director of the union of Samaria local authorities for the environment, said the work had been done without the union's approval and was illegal."

"Jewish groups are alarmed by news that the union representing Britain's university tutors will discuss a boycott of Israeli universities at its annual meeting this week. If passed, the motion would compel members of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) not to visit Bar-Ilan, Hebrew and Haifa universities, until they 'call a halt to all attempts to confiscate land from Palestinian families' and sever links with a 'college located in an illegal settlement in the Occupied Territories'. Jewish groups say that the motion exposes anti-Israeli bias within the AUT and warn that the action threatens to further inflame tensions at a time when fears of anti-semitism on Britain's campuses are on the increase. 'When you start having this sort of thing you create a culture among academia that makes it acceptable to pick on one side or another,' Danny Stone, campaigns director for the Union of Jewish Students, said. 'It's not what academia should be about.' The AUT defended its position. 'It's fair to say we've received some heavy email traffic of an intemperate nature about this,' said head of David Nicholson. 'But members are free to raise whatever issues they want for debate and showing solidarity with people in Palestine is something some members feel is extremely important.' Earlier this month allegations of anti-semitism on Britain's campuses spilled over into a public row within the National Union of Students. Outrage in Russia as Spassky puts name to rabidly anti-Semitic petition,

"Boris Spassky, the former chess world champion, has caused uproar in Russia by signing a petition that demands the country's state prosecutor bans a number of Jewish organisation. Spassky was among 5,000 Russians who put their name to a letter calling for a ban on all religious and national groups acting on the principles of the Shulchan Aruch, a repository of Jewish law originally written in the 1560s. The "Letter of 5,000", sent three weeks ago, branded Judaism "anti-Christian and inhumane" and accused believers of "committing ritual murders". It warned of a "hidden campaign of genocide against the Russian people and their traditional society and values", and was backed with quotes from anti-Semitic literature from the 19th century. Late on Friday, after constant criticism from religious leaders and figures in the chess world, Spassky tried to distance himself from the campaign. He did not deny that he had signed it, but said: "The appearance of my name was a mistake. As a 'Chess King' I have always tried to fortify and unite the multinational kingdom of chess, and not to cause division within it. I will remain faithful to that principle in my old age." Evgeny Gik, a Russian chess master and writer who is a long-term acquaintance of Spassky, had condemned the letter in a Russian newspaper. He recalled how, in the 1990s, Spassky travelled from his home in France to the St Petersburg chess club to be the guest of honour at a dinner party. There, according to Gik, Spassky remarked: "Everything is good in Russia, but I don't know how the Russian people can have allowed so many big-nosed people into government." Gik said that several grandmasters left the table in protest. Lev Ponomarev, a respected human rights activist, also condemned Spassky's involvement in the letter. "I am ashamed that people of such high moral authority are taking the lead in creating a kind of orthodox Taliban," he said. Spassky, who was born in 1937 and learned to play chess at five, became world chess champion in 1969 - a title that he held until 1972, when he was beaten by the American, Bobby Fischer. The match was perhaps the most legendary chess duel of all time. Many leading Soviet-era players were Jewish, including Garry Kasparov, officially the highest-ranked in the world but now retired. The intense competition created a "them and us" division between Jewish and non-Jewish players, who include Spassky. Although this is the first time that Spassky has given vent to anti-Semitic feelings in public, Fischer - whose parents were, in fact, Jewish - has frequently exposed himself as a Holocaust denier and anti-Semite. In an interview in 1999, he said that Jews were "criminals, parasites, liars and thieves" and described America as a "farce controlled by dirty, hook-nosed, circumcised Jew bastards."

"The former Canterbury University academic who resigned over a "book-burning" scandal says American universities will not employ him for fear of having "some sort of Holocaust-denier" on their staff. Senior history lecturer Thomas Fudge left Canterbury in 2003 after his article in a university journal, revisiting the furore about a student's highly contentious thesis questioning key aspects of the Holocaust, sparked an emotional spat with university heads. [Cop]ies of the article were destroyed and an extensive nationwide debate about academic freedom ensued. Fudge, a Canadian, who is married with one child, yesterday told The Press he was running a research centre in the United States and doing consultative work. He had book contracts and was travelling internationally as a speaker on medieval history. But his preferred job, teaching, eluded him. [He] believed American universities would not employ him because of "the New Zealand controversy". "One speaks about the Holocaust at one's own personal peril." Despite 13 years as an academic and two earned PhDs, he had had job interviews but could not secure a teaching position at a university. In one meeting to discuss job opportunities this week, the Hayward-Fudge controversy was raised and he was asked to explain his position. "My defence of Joel Hayward has been something that has created some consequences for me. "Institutions, in my view, are scared to death of being associated with me because I guess they are afraid of being accused of having some sort of Holocaust-denier in their faculty." Fudge had been commissioned to write an article about the impact on masters student Joel Hayward of the widespread condemnation of his 1993 thesis questioning the validity of the Holocaust. Hayward suggested the gas chambers used to systematically kill Jews and other minority groups could not have existed and questioned the number of people who died at the hands of the Nazis in World War 2. Hayward's mental health and job prospects suffered. But university heads objected to Fudge's article, sacking the editor of department publication History Now and controversially destroying 500 copies that carried Fudge's article. [Al]though the books were shredded, it became known as the "book-burning" scandal in academic circles. Fudge left New Zealand in November 2003, on leave, and later resigned. Hayward has also relocated overseas. Speaking to The Press from Washington, Fudge said the Holocaust had become a modern taboo of such potency that any mention of it that was less than emphatically apologetic was unacceptable. Fudge said he had read Labour MP John Tamihere's recent comments about the Holocaust, which Prime Minister Helen Clark indicated would not be tolerated. "Obviously I wish that there were not consequences but I don't have any regrets for standing up for what I regard as academic freedom." Tamihere said he was "sick and tired of hearing how many Jews got gassed" and, although the Holocaust revolted him, he did not want to be continually made to feel guilty for it. Fudge said Tamihere's comment was "much ado about nothing". "That statement, I don't find anything offensive in it. I don't find it anti-Jewish." Fudge said Tamihere's other comments, about women and gays, were "unacceptable" and "offensive". The Simon Wiesenthal Centre, a Jewish human rights organisation, suggested Tamihere had a mental illness called Holocaust Fatigue. "That is nonsense, a sad comment on New Zealand society. When some person in Jerusalem can create a form of mental illness and society accepts that," Fudge said. Opposition leader Don Brash called for apologies to the Jewish community. Fudge said: "Why? Obviously, he's not allowed to say how he feels. "On the matter of human suffering, it's not necessary to privilege the Jewish experience." Fudge attributed the Holocaust taboo to the reach of the more radical factions of the powerful Jewish lobby. "There are some radical Zionist-types that bring a lot of pressure. "The roads of the world should not, and do not, run through Jerusalem."

"Sherry Ornter's New Jersey Dreaming is surely another example of a book that will inadvertently find itself entering into conversations about American Jews. Ornter's interest in American Jews was the result of her decision to learn about mobility by studying what happened to her own 1958 graduating class from Weequahic High School in New Jersey, 83 percent of whom were Jews. She learned that her classmates experienced substantial upward mobility. One way or another the tale she told came, in large part, to be about the experiences of a group of American Jews born during World War II. And Ornter clearly became convinced during her research that the impact of their Jewishness on the mobility was something that required understanding ... She comes to the task a distinguished anthropologist who has written extensively about the Sherpas of Nepal. She is a founder of feminist anthropology and has for her career been a key thinker about the nature of culture and its relationship to social structure ... Ornter argues that a 'Jewish hegemony' dominated the neighborhood, equating Jewishness with academic success and other desirable qualities. Non-Jews and some of the working-class Jews fell outside the hegemony and often felt excluded and hurt by those differences ... And she learns, not surprisingly, that those in the highly valued categories of popularity and success are the students whose parents have the highest capital ... Ornter aims to enlarge the terrain of the conversation by introducing the relevance of social movements to opportunity ... It is here that her analysis is disturbing. Remarkably, she argues that Jews did not assault anti-Semitism on 'a political level,' but rather at the 'material and cultural levels.' Not only were Jews ultimately financially successful, but, beginning in the 1930s, their presence in the culture industry allowed them to 'blur the differences' between Jews and 'real Americans' rather than directly challenge anti-Semitism. And it was in the period between the parents and children of the Class of 1958 that Jewishness 'came out of the closet' and became an 'identity in the contemporary sense, something to publicly embrace and poltically rally around.' (p. 208) Indeed, she argues that the success of Jewish boys in her class is a product of Jewish strategies to advance in the society that created 'the first of the so-called identity movements'... In a footnote she mentions in passing that virtually none of her subjects attributed their success to their Jewishness (p. 309). Yet her interviews and her own analysis of the Jewish hegemony suggests that "Jewish pride" and "expectations" were crucial to the lives of these men and women."

Wiesenthal Center urges Lawson's to pull antisemitic book,

"The Simon Wiesenthal Center today urged the Tokyo-based Lawson's chain of stores to remove from their shelves copies of "Yudaya No Seikousha Ga Oshieru Ookanemochi Ni Naru Hito No Houteishiki" (A Successful Jew Teaches the Method for Becoming Fabulously Rich), a book labeled by the Jewish community in Japan as a fraud. In his letter to Lawson CEO Takeshi Niinami, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said in part: "The publisher, Nihon Bungeisha, has in the past years issued, and continues to issue, numerous titles that are highly offensive and defamatory to the Jewish people. This current work fosters a stereotyped image of Jews to many young Japanese. We urge your company to review the contents of this work and to permanently remove it from the shelves of all Lawson outlets." In a related development, the Wiesenthal Center is also protesting to Bungei Shunju for running an advertisement for the book in the current issue of Shukan Bunshun magazine. "The acceptance of such an ad by Bungei Shunju is a violation of the commitment this company made to the Simon Wiesenthal Center in 1995 to desist from publishing or promoting any antisemitic material," Cooper said. In January of that year, a prominent Japanese magazine, Marco Polo, ran a cover story that denied any Jews were murdered in the gas chambers at the Auschwitz death camp during the World War II Nazi Holocaust. As a result of a worldwide protest led by the Wiesenthal Center, Bungei Shunju closed Marco Polo. Cooper has visited Japan many times on behalf of the Wiesenthal Center to discuss the issue of Japanese antisemitism."

Since my youth, I am an opponent to the extradition of Jews.” Putin plans to visit Israel and hold talks with Sharon on April 27-28. Sharon expressed concern over sale of Russian Igla tactical missile complexes to Syria. “Israel cannot contradict the supplies of Russian weapons to the Arabs. Everyone sells weapons, America and Israel as well. Our protest may be explained by fears that these weapons could fall into terrorists’ hands,” Sharon said. He added Russia “wants to become an empire again. They want to become a factor with a world influence. For dozens of years, they were on the side of the Arabs in the Middle East, they supplied them with a big amount of weapons and support that prevented Israel’s victory in the war. "A new article by A. B. Yehosua, one of the most celebrated contemporary Israeli novelists, is an impressive, controversial, intellectual and explosive piece that has caused all hell to break loose among local scholars and politicians. Essentially, the article's thesis is that there is something amorphous and undefined in the Jewish identity that promotes hatred and anger. According to Yehoshua's thesis, identity is actually a fusion of religion and nationality. The gentile, Yehoshua said, uses the demonized Jew to mirror his fantasy images, his demons, and his fears. Yehoshua said he had decided to write the article in the wake of a recent upsurge in anti-Semitism worldwide. "For example, after al-Qaeda blew up the Twin Towers, some said the Mossad knew when it was going to happen, and it warned the Jews not to come to work that morning. All kinds of all-too-familiar statements regarding Jewish conspiracies were suddenly heard. Things that sound like 'Protocols of Elders of Zion,'" he said. Yehoshua's response to accusations that the article blames Jews for anti-Semitism is that the "inability to look inside is a horrible thing, and I do not criticize anyone in my article, but rather check the structure of Jewish identity and try to understand what in there brings such horrible disasters and awakens such pathological interaction." He said he has gotten the feeling that his thesis might seem as if it places criminal or moral responsibility for Jew hatred on Jews themselves. "This is not the case," he said. "If a girl wears a miniskirt in the woods, she is entitled to do so. If someone attacks her, it is his fault. But she should know that something like this can happen. Meaning, one has to be aware of the interaction around him. There is no sin. The fault is on the attacker. But you should know the price. In case of the Jews, the price was so horrible, something should be done." Critical responses, some support ... Shinui Party Chairman Yosef "Tommy" Lapid, a Holocaust survivor from Hungary, said the real existential hatred against Jews was directed particularly toward assimilated Jews, who were more successful than Gentiles ... A Jew is a Jew before he is anything else Basically, Yehoshua said that at the basis of the amorphous identity is the understanding that every Jew around the world recognizes himself as such before he attempts to assume any other identity. For example, he mentions the affinity a Polish Jew and a Yemeni Jew share, although they cannot talk, let alone meet. "The Gentiles feel threatened by Jews, because they have a double identity," he said. "The Gentile cannot seem to grasp and might, under some conditions, react to it with violence." The Jew as chameleon Another reason Yehoshua listed to base his theory of threatened Gentiles is the fact that Jews have an ever-changing, unstable, chameleon characteristic, which is difficult to accommodate. "I describe facts," he said. "The Jew changes all the time. He can be assimilated, practically without any defined identity, and he can be an Orthodox Jew. He can be in different places and assume the identity of different nations" ... In every generation an enemy rises upon us to destroy us In conclusion, Yehoshua said if all Jews lived in Israel then there would be no anti-Semitism after 50 years. People would not have known the Jews at all, "just like we don't know the Tibetans," he said. "In every generation an enemy rises upon us to destroy us," is the song Jews sing in the seder that exemplifies the idea of Jewish unity in face of anti-Semitism. For Yehoshua, this line exemplifies the only action to counter anti-Semitism Jews can take until Jewish identity is redefined."

"For those of you not familiar with the so-called Lavon Affair - one of the most egregious scandals in the history of Israel - the recent honors accorded to its participants should force us to look back at the matter. The Lavon Affair was concocted by a person named Benyamin Givli in the Israeli Defense Department which was led by Pinchas Lavon. The basic idea was to compromise Egypt by bombing public locations such as movie theaters in order to create the suspicion that Nasser was seeking to harm Westerners. The affair was botched and the spies found out and brought to trial. The Lavon Affair, along with the Mas'ouda Shemtov Synagogue bombings in Iraq, have long been used as proof that the Israelis were intent on using subterfuge in the Arab world to compromise the Arabs and to force out the Jews who lived in those countries. It is unfortunate that these covert operations are not known to Western Jews. In our own Sephardic communities such matters are completely ignored. The two standard sources on the events are Ian Black and Benny Morris' Israel's Secret Wars and Shabtai Teveth's Ben Gurion's Spy. A more controversial and contested approach has been taken in Naeim Giladi's Ben Gurion's Scandals. After half a century of reticence and recrimination, Israel on Wednesday honored nine Egyptian Jews recruited as agents-provocateur in what became one of the worst intelligence bungles in the country's history. Israel was at war with Egypt when it hatched a plan in 1954 to ruin its rapprochement with the United States and Britain by firebombing sites frequented by foreigners in Cairo and Alexandria. But Israeli hopes that the attacks, which caused no casualties, would be blamed on local insurgents collapsed when the young Zionist bombers were caught and confessed at public trials. Two were hanged. The rest served jail terms and emigrated to Israel. Embarrassed before the West, Israel long denied involvement. It kept mum even after its 1979 peace deal with Egypt, fearing memories of the debacle could sour ties. "Although it is still a sensitive situation, we decided now to express our respect for these heroes," President Moshe Katsav said after presenting the three surviving members of the bomber ring with certificates of appreciation at a Jerusalem ceremony. What went wrong in the "Lavon Affair" - after Pinhas Lavon, Israel's defence minister when the plot came to light - remains a matter of debate in a country more used to tales of espionage coups. The Egyptian agents were ignored. The Egyptian Jews were recruited by a fringe unit of Military Intelligence rather than the premier Israeli spy agency Mossad. The situation recurred in 1985, when U.S. Navy analyst Jonathan Pollard was sentenced to life imprisonment in the United States for passing military secrets to Israel's scientific liaison office."

"An investigation into alleged anti-Semitism in an academic department at New York's Columbia University has rejected bogus charges made by pro-Israel students--but made a scapegoat of left-wing professor Joseph Massad. The report, released March 31, clears faculty in the Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC) Department of charges of anti-Semitism and finds that there has been no systematic intimidation of Jewish students--a conclusion that unbiased outside observers could have reached months ago. However, the report singles out Massad--despite weak and contradictory evidence--for allegedly making a hostile statement to a Jewish student. The investigation was prompted by the documentary film Columbia Unbecoming--produced by the David Project, a pro-Israel advocacy group--that alleges abuse of Jewish students by pro-Palestinian professors. University President Lee Bollinger gave legitimacy to these claims by publicly "assuming" that they were true--and set a dangerous precedent by creating a panel of professors to investigate the MEALAC Department. From the beginning, the charges against the professors have amounted to a political inquisition. The report itself admits that the "majority of complaints focused on what a number of students perceived as a bias in the content of particular courses." But the committee's report found one story "credible"--in which Massad was accused of telling a student that if she was going to deny Israeli atrocities, she should get out of his class. The report shows that two people corroborated the "main elements" of the story, only one of whom was actually registered for the class. But three people--including the two graduate student teaching assistants for the class and one undergraduate--have no recollection of the incident. The committee's report fails to address the fact that the student, Deena Shanker, gave three different versions of the incident. Without any hard evidence, only racist assumptions about Massad, a Palestinian professor, could allow the committee to accept the testimony of the student as "credible." The committee asserts that Massad "became angered... and responded heatedly," to the student in his class. But later on in the same report, the committee portrays Massad as accommodating towards differences of opinion--and as a teacher who went out of his way to engage with students inside and outside the classroom. A second allegation against Massad and another against Professor George Saliba were considered questionable by the committee and were largely dismissed in the report. But Massad was made the scapegoat overall. "The Columbia committee report might absolve the university of the charge of anti-Semitism; they have done this by singling out Joseph Massad as the problem," said Yogesh Chandrani, a member of Stop McCarthyism at Columbia (SMAC). Bollinger has remained silent in the face of death threats and racist e-mails sent to MEALAC professors, the subsequent canceling of Massad's class due to intimidation, and calls from politicians and the New York media for Massad's firing. Bollinger never met with Massad--though he met with the accusing students. As he told students at a university dinner, "I'm not going to talk about whether the accusations are true or not. Let's just assume they're true." The committee followed Bollinger's lead in considering Massad guilty until proven innocent. In Massad's testimony to the committee, he closely details Bollinger's damaging role in the investigation. According to Massad, Bollinger's actions "emboldened those engaged in the campaign to intimidate me and would confirm to the public that the allegations against me are in fact true, at least, as far as he was concerned. That the Columbia University administration acted as a collaborator with the witch-hunters instead of defending me and offering itself as a refuge from right-wing McCarthyism has been a cause of grave personal and professional disappointment to me. "I am utterly disillusioned with a university administration that treats its faculty with such contempt and am hoping against hope that the faculty will rise to the task before them and force President Bollinger to reverse this perilous course on which he has taken Columbia's faculty and students. The major goal of the witch-hunters is to destroy the institution of the university in general. I am merely the entry point for their political project." There is a concerted campaign to get Massad fired by a number of defenders of Israel, who are threatened by his scholarship and his support for a one-state solution. Bollinger's actions--and the findings of the investigation--give ammunition to the campaign to fire Massad. "This is a part of a nationwide campaign to chill any kind of discourse that interrupts American foreign policy, including Israel and Palestine," Nader Uthman, a teaching assistant who testified to the investigative committee on Massad's behalf, said in a radio interview. "And we're seeing this all over the country." According to Chandrani of SMAC, the next steps for those who support academic freedom should be to "defend Joseph Massad, defend the right to criticize U.S. and Israeli policies. And above all, defend the right to support the Palestinian cause."

He called it a "CSI-type of investigation."When asked whether police considered Anna Ayala's claim a hoax, San Jose Police Capt. Dave Keneller, a lead detective on the case, indicated that he did.Davis said Wendy's franchises in Northern California have lost $2.5 million since Ayala claimed on March 22 that she bit down on 1 1/2 inches of a human finger when she was eating a bowl of the fast-food restaurant's chili."

Israel jumps into restitution pursuit,

"Not since 1952 has the Israeli government been as intensely involved in Holocaust restitution issues as it is now, the co-chairman of the committee behind a first-of-its-kind report on the matter told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday. Aharon Mor, the senior adviser in the Prime Minister's Office on restitution of rights and Jewish property, said the First Global Report on Restitution of Jewish Property, submitted this week to the ministerial committee on the matter, marked the first official governmental discussion of the issue since the 1952 reparations agreement with Germany. After that, Mor said, "It was never discussed at the governmental level, but was left to Jewish organizations to deal with. When the World Jewish Restitution Organization was established, the decision was to have the government stay in the background and let the WJRO do he job." In addition to the WJRO, the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany ("the Claims Conference"), the World Jewish Congress and various other groups have pursued lost/looted property claims and damages from European governments as well as private companies – including high-profile cases against Swiss banks and European insurance companies. The manner in which those groups pursue such claims, and what they do with the money and property they acquire in the name of Holocaust victims, have generated controversy among Jews and infighting among the groups themselves. That's one reason the First Global Report is a departure from the status quo: A key element is its claim that the State of Israel essentially represents the interests of the entire Jewish people, subsuming individuals' complaints and even the considerable work of other bodies under its own authority. Mor insisted that the government's interest in taking over the issue is not a rejection of other groups' work ... The report's estimation of total damages – for looted property, loss of income and wages for forced labor alone – is $230 billion-$320b., based on figures arrived at by former US deputy secretary of the Treasury Stuart E. Eizenstat during the Bill Clinton administration. And that figure, Mor acknowledged, did not include the inestimable value of such things as intellectual property and sentimental or impossible-to-replace property. The valuation is limited to European countries, but the report leaves open the possibility of pursuing Jewish damages claims in Arab countries as well ... The report acknowledges that one difficulty in addressing claims is that there is little legal framework in Europe for restitution claims. A difficulty that it does not address, however, is that many of the 18 European states targeted by the committee have undergone political revolutions; it would be difficult to prove that their modern governments are responsible for the actions of World War II-era or Communist-era regimes. It is also unclear from the report just how Israel would seek any claims. Possible steps include political action, class action suits and/or negotiations with individual countries, Mor said. The government, he said, has not yet devised a mechanism for executing any decisions the ministerial committee may make regarding pursuit of restitution claims, nor has it decided where to position such a body. "It could be in the Prime Minister's Office, or in the Finance Ministry, or in the Justice Ministry; it could be an NGO, or it could be an inter-ministerial committee." Regardless, he said, "There is absolutely an imperative to have a governmental structure to deal with this... it could be something very modest and down-to-earth, but someone needs to carry this flag." The report also does not make clear how it would administrate any funds or property it would collect – already a highly divisive issue among Holocaust survivors, Jewish groups and the state itself. What is clear, however, is that the steering committee – and Mor – are determined to intensely pursue this issue, and to do so in a different manner than any other until now. "Look," said Mor, "if anyone would try to deal with this with regular measures, it would never work. We need to say, 'Here's the property and what it is worth. Let's get it back.' "My father, who lost his whole family [in the Holocaust], told me: 'Aharon, no one can give us back our family. But the least they can do is give us some money.'" ["Give me money." "[T]here is a lot of stocktaking about the American Jewish experience. At the Anti-Defamation League, we are among those engaged in this activity. Our latest public opinion poll on the attitudes of Americans toward Jews in America - a survey of 1,600 Americans conducted by the Marttila Communications Group from March 18-25 - provides an opportunity to do just that. Clearly, America is different. The Jewish experience in the U.S., it can be argued, is different from every other Diaspora community. The level of integration and the comfort of American Jews in U.S. society is unmatched. Still, America is not immune from Jew-hatred, not in the past and not even today. What happened in our country shortly before the start of fighting in Iraq two years ago was a reminder. The old canard espoused by Charles Lindbergh before WWII - that Jews, because of their narrow self-interest, were bringing the country to war - was now being updated to blame neo-conservative Jews. Unlike when Pat Buchanan accused Jews of causing the first Gulf War, this time the accusations took on a life of their own. This duality of America being a hospitable place for Jews, but also one where anti-Semitism can resonate, surfaced once again in our 2005 survey. The most important finding of the poll - that 14 percent of Americans had anti-Semitic attitudes - was confirmation that anti-Semitism has dramatically declined since our initial survey in 1964. At that time, 29 percent of Americans were deemed to possess anti-Semitic attitudes. The 2005 findings are generally consistent with what we have found over the last decade, with some variation - in 1998, the number was 12 percent, in 2002 it was 17 percent. Of course, these declining figures are matched by many other indicators in American society, whether it is the number of U.S. senators, now 13 out of 100, or the access that Jews have at every level to just about all institutions in America, to the wide acceptance of Jewish cultural norms in society. So where are the dark spots? First, 14 percent means there are still some 35 million Americans whose views of Jews are unacceptable. Our surveys have consistently identified older and less-educated Americans as those who most frequently fall into this category. That would seem to offer hope for the future, though age remains a consistent factor, even when a new generation replaces the last. Of great concern is the persistence of two of the most insidious manifestations of anti-Semitism: The beliefs that Jews are more loyal to Israel than to America, and that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus. Since so much of the history of anti-Semitism relates to the charges that Jews are always aliens to the societies in which they live, and are Christ-killers, these realities should not be taken lightly. In our recent survey, 33 percent of those polled said American Jews were more loyal to Israel than America, a remarkably consistent finding that goes back four decades. Thirty percent of Americans said Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus. These are jarring findings that raise questions as to how they square with the broader, highly optimistic reading of the American scene. What can be said is that the negative attitudes reflected in these responses don't seem to translate into any major anti-Jewish behavior. Those of us who have led missions of influential Americans to Israel are sometimes struck that we, as American Jews, are often referred to by the people we are escorting as if we were Israeli citizens, rather than Americans like them. And yet, there are deep friendships and no hostility attached to these strange expressions ... [T]here is nothing to be complacent about when these stereotypes persist. The charges of disloyalty and excessive power against Jewish neo-cons, and the fact that millions of Americans will be viewing the DVD of "The Passion" with their children, are matters of concern."

"An Orthodox rabbi got into a brawl with a swastika-wearing neo-Nazi Sunday evening at Kansas City International Airport, resulting in both men being handcuffed and issued summonses for disorderly conduct. After it was reported Monday evening on television and Tuesday in The Kansas City Star, the incident involving Rabbi David Fine of modern Orthodox Congregation Beth Israel Abraham & Voliner was the talk of the local Jewish community, not to mention various radio shows and Internet chat rooms. But Rabbi Fine, on the advice of his lawyer, declined to discuss the dust-up. So did Congregation BIAV President Andy Ernstein. KCI Airport Police officer J. Kraft filed an incident report, saying he was summoned to airport Terminal C at 5:40 p.m. Sunday regarding a fight in progress. When he arrived, Kraft said, an off-duty KCPD officer had already broken up the fight between Rabbi Fine and Steven T. Boswell of Olathe. Rabbi Fine told Kraft he was waiting for a flight to New York Sunday evening when he encountered Boswell, who was wearing a red T-shirt and a necklace with swastikas on them above camouflage pants and combat boots. Boswell reportedly has a shaved head, or "skinhead."The report says that Rabbi Fine "stated he told subject #2 (ed. note: Boswell) that he should be ashamed of himself, and that subject #2 responded by calling him inhuman. Subject #1 stated that he then walked up to subject #2, said something to him, threw his cup of coffee in subject #2's face and punched subject #2 in the face."Boswell's statement to police largely jibes with that of Rabbi Fine, adding that he struck Rabbi Fine on the head repeatedly after being attacked. Both men declined medical attention, were given summonses to appear in municipal court June 22 and were released on their own recognizance. According to several sources, Boswell was at KCI Sunday evening to see off recently fired Fairleigh Dickinson University professor and National Socialist Movement activist Jacques Pluss and NSM "Commander" Jeff Schoep - the two guests of honor at last weekend's NSM convention, held in the Kansas City area ... The NSM Web site was updated at least twice on Tuesday. At that time, the top item on the home page was a link to a page headlined "Freedom of Speech and Expression attacked in Kansas City." After recounting the incident, the unsigned piece asked "Can you have freedom of speech and expression in Kansas? Or are we only free to say what the so called 'chosen people (jews)' allow? "Isn't the Jewish description of themselves as 'God's chosen people' an example Jewish supremacism? ... Had the roles been reversed and the National Socialist had thrown a boiling cup of coffee in the Rabbi's face, it would have been an International scandal with World wide news coverage!!! "When the court case comes up in June, we will find out if Freedom of speech and expression still exists in Kansas City" ... In addition to leading the modern Orthodox Congregation BIAV for the past two years, Rabbi Fine is Midwest regional president of Amcha - The Coalition for Jewish Concerns. Meaning "Grassroots" in Hebrew, Amcha was founded in 1992 by Rabbi Avi Weiss of Riverdale, N.Y., who was one of the original American activists on behalf of freedom for Soviet Jewry. According to its Web site (www.amchacjc.org), Amcha exists "to promote a compassionate, inclusive and proactive Jewish community" and to "rais(e) a voice of conscience on behalf of endangered Jews. This worldwide effort includes countering anti-Semitism, advocating for Israel, preserving Holocaust memory..." [NOTE: Amha founder Rabbi Avi Weiss is the obnoxious Judeocentrist who in 1989 led a group of seven Jewish invaders into a Carmelite convent in Poland to protest/forbid eight nuns from posting a cross in the proximity of Auschwitz (tens of thousands of Christians had been killed there). It became an international incident and the world Jewish Lobby eventually succeeded in dictating what could and couldn't be placed on Polish soil. And a cross isn't kosher.]

We don't believe in authoritarianism." Pornography thus becomes a way of defiling Christian culture and, as it penetrates to the very heart of the American mainstream (and is no doubt consumed by those very same WASPs), its subversive character becomes more charged ... It is a case of the traditional revolutionary/radical drive of immigrant Jews in America being channeled into sexual rather than leftist politics. Just as Jews have been disproportionately represented in radical movements over the years, so they are disproportionately represented in the porn industry. Jews in America have been sexual revolutionaries. A large amount of the material on sexual liberation was written by Jews. Those at the forefront of the movement that forced America to adopt a more liberal view of sex were Jewish ... Overall, then, porn performers are a group of people who praise rebellion, self-fulfilment, and promiscuity. What are we ashamed of? This brief overview and analysis of the role and motivations behind pornographers and performers is intended to shed light on a neglected topic in American Jewish popular culture. "Anal sex is Jewish sex," Nathan Abrams, a young and energetic history lecturer told his audience in a talk he delivered at the University of Nottingham in England on Monday. Dozens of Jewish men and women attended the lecture, but no one got upset. No one was enraged. One of those present even asked with bemused curiosity: "Do you mean that heterosexual anal sex is more popular among Jews than in other religions?" Abrams admitted that he had no evidence. He based his argument on pornography produced by Jews and books written by Jews, mentioning names like Norman Mailer and Philip Roth. The audience listened politely. How can one explain this show of liberal tolerance? Perhaps it was the late hour of the day. While Abrams' lecture, "Porn Again Jews: Jewish Involvement in the Adult Film Industry," drew a fairly large crowd, it began only at 11 P.M. The audience had already endured two full days of nonstop lectures, from 8:00 A.M. until after midnight, on a wide range of subjects, including kabbala, ecology, demography, politics, Torah, sex education, Israeli rock, the occupation, media, medicine, and it was simply exhausting. How much knowledge can you absorb in a single day? How much skepticism can you generate? By night, anything funny or weird or irritating may be readily accepted, without being checked too carefully. Yet there may be a more substantive reason for the audience's response. Abrams' statements were accepted with such equanimity perhaps owing to the character of the event at which the lecture was given. This is Limmud, the massive annual gathering of British Jewry held during the week between Christmas and New Years Day - a season in which Britain's public arena is entirely consumed by Christian merrymaking."

"A new study on children's internet use shows almost one in five have been exposed to pornography or contacted by a stranger online. The report, kidsonline@home, was released today by federal internet safety body NetAlert and the Australian Broadcasting Authority. It surveyed 502 children between eight and 13, and their parents, and found household use of the internet and broadband doubled between 2003 and 2004. The study also found that one-third of the children had started using the internet at age five or six. Of the parents surveyed, 38 per cent reported that their child experienced an issue of concern when online. Almost one fifth (16 per cent) said their children had been exposed to pornography and 3 per cent had chatted online with a stranger. More than one in five (23 per cent) said they had been contacted by a stranger. Federal Communications Minister Senator Helen Coonan, who launched the report, said the greatest concern to parents was access to online pornography."

Controversial Yiddish play to be staged,

"When an English-language version of Sholem Asch’s Yiddish play God of Vengeance premiered on Broadway in 1923, it was promptly shut down and its producer and cast jailed on obscenity charges. The public was shocked by the depiction of a lesbian relationship on stage. The American Jewish community was also scandalized by this drama about a lowlife Jewish brothel-keeper and the Jewish prostitutes he employs. The producer and lead actor were ultimately convicted and fined in a famous trial. Next year, God of Vengeance will be presented in the original language by the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre at the Saidye Bronfman Centre (SBC) ... Set in a Polish shtetl, the play centres on Yankel and his ex-prostitute wife Sore whose concern is that their virgin daughter Rivkele not be corrupted by how they make a living and ruin her marriageability. Even though the family lives over the shop, so to speak, they try to shield her from what’s going on downstairs. Yankel commissions a Torah scroll in the hope of improving his status in the community and maybe in God’s eyes as well. His plan is to marry off his daughter to a rabbinical student. Instead, she falls in love with one of his prostitutes and a rival pimp schemes to lure Rivkele into ill repute. The complaint against the 1923 Broadway performance was laid by Rabbi Joseph Silverman, by then retired from the prestigious Temple Emanu-El on Fifth Avenue. He also charged that the play defamed Jews and should not be seen by gentile audiences. Letters complaining that the play was anti-Semitic appeared in the New York Times. Wasserman herself notes that leading Yiddish writer I.L. Peretz purportedly said upon reading the new script, “Burn it, Asch, burn it!” ... Wasserman has not yet decided what adaptations, if any, she will make to this production, such as toning down the coarser sexual content and salty language."

Former counselor sentenced to five years in prison,

"A former youth counselor was sentenced to five years in prison yesterday for inappropriately touching a teenage boy while they were in the hot tub of his home and sending child pornography via the Internet. Eric Dorfner, 42, of Wagon Wheel Court in Evesham pleaded guilty in December to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Dorfner declined to comment when asked by Superior Court Judge Thomas S. Smith Jr. if he had anything to say before he was sentenced. Dorfner was charged in October 2003 with sexually assaulting two boys, but he pleaded guilty to charges involving only one victim as part of his plea agreement. Both victims, now adults, told Smith yesterday their lives have been irrevocably changed by the assaults They said they have experienced nightmares, taken illegal drugs and had to undergo counseling ... Dorfner met the boy while he was a youth counselor at the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, Woodcrest Chapter, based at Katz Jewish Community Center in Cherry Hill, authorities said."

"A photograph of a 24-year-old Monsey man and details of his conviction for sexually abusing a child have been sent to Ramapo families. Yoel Oberlander was classified by a court as a Level 2 offender, which is considered at moderate risk of becoming a repeat offender. Oberlander pleaded guilty in 2002 to second-degree sexual abuse, second-degree unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child, all misdemeanors. He admitted in County Court to having sexual contact with an 11-year-old girl. The sexual abuse took place in the Spring Valley and Ramapo area. Both police departments investigated Oberlander, who was sentenced to six years' probation. Spring Valley police notified the East Ramapo school district that Oberlander had registered his home address in Monsey. The Ramapo Police Department also was notified. Earlier this month, East Ramapo officials sent about 8,000 letters containing Oberlander's photo, conviction and ZIP code home with students to give to their parents. The district also sent the information to private schools in Ramapo."

The 60-year-old claimed his spell in custody had been "fantastic" and said he now intends to devote time to help pursue hundreds of miscarriage of justice cases. King, who left Maidstone Prison in Kent at 7.10am today, said: "I’m innocent of the charges against me. There is no issue of the acts being consensual, there were no acts. However much people try, you can’t bend the truth" ... King who had his first hit in 1965 with Everyone’s Gone To The Moon, said he would be campaigning to help other people he believed had been victims of miscarriages of justice. He said: "I’m not that important. Think of the people who have been locked up for crimes they did not commit, some of whom have killed themselves. "They’re the people I care for and will crusade for." King urged people to buy his new record, My Love, My Life, which is described on promotional material as "released when he is ... King was convicted at the Old Bailey in September 2001 of sexually abusing five youngsters aged 13-15. The jury heard that the Cambridge-educated impresario lured boys to his mews home in Bayswater, London, in the 1980s and showed them pornography before assaulting them. He was jailed for seven years in November 2001, but continued to protest his innocence despite failing in a bid to have his convictions overturned in 2003. King’s solicitor Giovanni di Stefano said he would now be subject to extensive licence conditions, including a ban on working with children, staying at a specified address and not receiving visits from anyone under 18 without permission."

A life full of horrors,

"Like most, I feel a shudder of shock whenever I read the words of Andrea Dworkin. On crime: “I really believe a woman has the right to execute a man who has raped her.” On romance: “In seduction, the rapist often bothers to buy a bottle of wine.” Her radicalism was always bracing, sometimes terrifying, and, in a world where even having Botox is claimed as some kind of pseudo-feminist act, she was the real thing. Her death at the age of 58 deprives us of a truly challenging voice.
But Dworkin was always more famous for being Andrea Dworkin than anything else. Never mind her seminal works of radical feminism, never mind her disturbing theorising that our culture is built on the ability of men to rape and abuse women. For many, Dworkin was famous for being fat. She was the stereotype of the Millie Tant feminist made flesh — overweight, hairy, unmade-up, wearing old denim dungarees and bad trainers — and thus a target for ridicule. The fact that she presented herself as she was was rare and deeply threatening; in a culture where a woman's appearance has become ever more defining, Dworkin came to represent the opposite of what women want to be. The attacks on Dworkin were not only personal, they also applied to her work. John Berger once called Dworkin “the most misrepresented writer in the Western world”. She has always been seen as the woman who said that all men are rapists, and that all sex is rape. In fact, she said neither of these things. Here’s what she told me in 1997: “If conquest is your mode of understanding sexuality, and the man is supposed to be a predator, and then feminists come along and say, no, sorry, that’s using force, that’s rape — a lot of male writers have drawn the conclusion that I'm saying all sex is rape.” In other words, it's not that all sex involves force, but that all sex that does involve force is rape. While much of it was brilliant, there are few who could agree with all of Dworkin’s work. Her exhortation to vengeance was unpalatable to many; she said that “a semi- automatic gun is one answer” to the problem of violence against women, and that she supported the murder of paedophiles. Dworkin had a Jewish childhood dominated by family memories of the Holocaust. Her mother was often ill, but her childhood in New Jersey was happy until the age of nine, when she was sexually abused in a cinema. From then on, it was a life full of horrors. After an anti-Vietnam protest when she was 18, she was sent to prison and was assaulted by two male prison doctors: “They pretty much tore me up inside with a steel speculum and had themselves a fine old time verbally tormenting me as well.” She married a Dutch anarchist who beat her savagely; she managed to escape from him, she said, “not because I knew that he would kill me but because I thought I would kill him”. Then, in 1999, Dworkin was drugged and raped in a hotel room in Paris. Last September, she told The Guardian: “At first [after the rape] I wanted very much to die. Now I only want to die a few times a day, which is damned good.”

While fitting for Hollywood, this scene isn’t unfolding on the big screen. It is the dramatic opening of Jewish Bay Area choreographer Nina Haft’s most recent modern dance piece where tzedakah comes in the form of dirty money. “Mit a Bing, Mit a Boom! A Klezmer Dance” is scheduled to premiere as a costumed “open-rehearsal” in San Francisco on Saturday, April 30. The piece, which Haft calls a “play dance,” explores the unique experience of Jewish gangster life in 1950s Las Vegas through loose narration, explosive and playful movement, period costumes, vaudeville placards and modern klezmer. Inspired by Haft’s research into Jewish gangsters, the dance is told through a series of flashbacks into the life of the daughter character Susie — her unfortunate and dramatic fate revealed in the first scene ... “The Jewish gangster stereotype defies the stereotype of the Jew in America,” says Haft. But that’s not the only stereotype Haft is seeking to deconstruct. When she began working on the piece, she was intent upon telling the story through the experience of Jewish women caught up in the high-roller lifestyle. “The topic of Jewish gangsters tends to be written about in terms of the male experience. It took me a long time to get a way in from a female point of view,” she says. Haft cast the piece with all female dancers playing both the male and female roles. They worked on breaking down what it feels like to move like a powerful man and like a gang of thugs. “In a way, it is like being in drag,” explains Haft. “Dancing as a female we’re often trained to look delicate. It can be liberating to break those rules.” As for the female characters, Haft worked hard on creating real-to-life Jewish women who were having the extraordinary experience of living a criminal lifestyle. “In Jewish families, women often run the family at home. They tend not to be docile and disenfranchised. They have more of a history of speaking up. It is a part of my heritage that I embrace.”

"A new play tracing the journey of Rachel Corrie from comfortable American home to death in a Gaza refugee camp paints the young peace activist as neither a traitor nor a saint. The 23-year-old campaigner was killed in 2003 trying to stop an Israeli army bulldozer from demolishing a Palestinian home in the Rafah camp in the Gaza strip. A personal testimony, the show makes no pretense of impartiality. Corrie's death made her a hero of the four-year-old Palestinian uprising, while critics attacked her as naive, an idiot and a traitor. But far from being a political rant, "My Name is Rachel Corrie," directed by British actor Alan Rickman, paints a personal portrait, using Corrie's e-mails and diaries to reveal a poetic writer brimming with ideas, energy and quirky humor. "I think it is a good idea for us all to drop everything and devote our lives to making this stop. I don't think it's an extremist thing to do anymore," Megan Dodds in the title role says -- words from the last e-mail Corrie wrote her mother. "We were just trying to show who she was and present her fairly, neither as a saint nor a traitor," Katharine Viner, a journalist at the Guardian newspaper who edited Corrie's writings with Rickman, told Reuters this week ... Reviews of "My Name is Rachel Corrie" were generally positive, although The Times broadsheet said some scenes offered only a one-sided portrayal of the Middle East conflict, calling them "unvarnished propaganda." The Guardian countered that "theater has no obligation to give a complete picture." The right-leaning Daily Telegraph's review hailed the "vigor and courage of youthful idealism." "I've got a fire in my belly," Corrie pronounces near the start of the show, which opens in her messy bedroom in the town of Olympia, Washington and ends among the bullet-pocked houses and rubble of Rafah. That fire kept Corrie scribbling plans, dreams and opinions constantly in her diary and obsessively making lists. One reads: "Five people to hang out with in eternity: Rainer Maria Rilke, Jesus, ee cummings, Gertrude Stein, Zelda Fitzgerald" ... The Corries [parents of Rachel] are suing Caterpillar Inc., the company which manufactures the type of bulldozer used by the Israeli army in Gaza, for damages, accusing Caterpillar of "war crimes." Corrie had several prescient dreams about her death. In her last e-mail home she writes: "Mom. I have bad nightmares about tanks and bulldozers outside our house and you and me inside." An Israeli investigation concluded Corrie's death was an accident. Last week, Israel's army cleared an officer of any wrongdoing in the killing of a young British cameraman in May 2003. The British government protested the latest finding."

Di Segni quoted a letter from the pope, who said he had "trust in the help of the Almighty", in which he pledged to continue and intensify contacts with Jews begun by his predecessor, Pope John Paul II. "I trust in the help of the Almighty to continue and strengthen the dialogue and collaboration with the sons and daughters of the Jewish people," the pope said in the message, which was dated Wednesday. Jewish leaders in Israel and beyond have saluted the election of Benedict, saying he was a friend of the Jewish people and calling on him to continue the fight against anti-Semitism. John Paul II, the first pope to visit a synagogue, was widely admired in Israel for his work in reconciling the Roman Catholic Church with the Jewish people, a policy his successor was expected to continue."

Israel 'shocked' at BBC reporter award,

"Israeli officials expressed dismay this week that BBC reporter Orla Guerin, who has come under sharp attack for what some perceive as an anti-Israeli bias in her coverage, will receive an MBE honor from the British government for "outstanding service to broadcasting." Diaspora Affairs Minister Natan Sharansky, who last year wrote a formal letter of complaint to the BBC over Guerin's coverage, said it is a pity that a lack of anti-Semitism was not a criterion for the award. If it were a criterion, he said, Guerin would not be receiving the honor. The MBE stands for Member of the British Empire, one of a number of honors issued each year by the Queen. "It is very sad that something as important as anti-Semitism is not taken into consideration when issuing this award, especially in Britain where the incidents of anti-Semitism are on the rise," Sharansky said ... One Israeli official, who responded to the news by saying he was "shocked," said Guerin is among the most anti-Israeli journalists reporting from Israel today. According to this official, granting her an award fits into a pattern that began in 2003 when the United Kingdom's Political Cartoon Society awarded Dave Brown of the Independent its "cartoon of the year" award for a cartoon he drew depicting a naked Ariel Sharon biting off the bloodied head of a Palestinian child. "It seems if you are anti-Israel, you will get an award," the official said. Last year, in response to one of Guerin's dispatches about Israel's capture of a mentally challenged 16-year-old would-be suicide bomber, Sharansky wrote the BBC that it employs a "gross double standard to the Jewish state" that smacks of anti-Semitism. Sharansky protested that Guerin, in her report, portrayed the event as "Israel's cynical manipulation of a Palestinian youngster for propaganda purposes." He said this "reveals a deep-seated bias against Israel. Only a total identification with the goals and methods of the Palestinian terror groups would drive a reporter to paint Israel in such an unflattering light instead of placing the focus on the bomber and the organization that recruited him." The report, he said, "has not only set a new standard for biased journalism, it has also raised concerns that it was tainted by anti-Semitism."

"Urszula Makosz doesn’t consider herself Jewish, but every Sunday night she takes the stage in Krakow to sing traditional Yiddish songs. Dressed theatrically in a black gown and a long shawl, her makeup dramatic and her long red hair flowing down her back, she swirls on stage, casting a steamy look at the audience. Her voice, as described by Chris Schwarz, the director at the Galicia Jewish Museum where the concerts take place, “is like a Berlin cabaret singer from the ’20s,” and soars throughout the hall. Makosz is a classically trained singer and actor who became interested in Yiddish language and song after going to the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow several years ago. The festival has been held annually since 1988, and includes workshops in Jewish song and dance, Hebrew calligraphy and text study, and offers concerts of klezmer and other Jewish music. It draws thousands of participants from all over Poland and throughout the world. This year, it will be held from June 25-July 3. Przemyslaw Piekarski, who teaches Yiddish at Krakow’s Jagiellonian University, was giving a workshop in Yiddish. Makosz took it, and soon she was hooked. “Learning the language, I became interested in Jewish culture and eventually began to sing,” she said. Her program includes songs about the ghetto, the resistance and the Holocaust, as well as more everyday issues, such as love and family. She often sings the songs of Mordechai Gebirtig, a composer and
lyricist Piekarski calls “Krakow’s bard.” Gebirtig, who was from Kazimierz, the Jewish district of Krakow, was killed in the city’s ghetto in 1942. “My favorite songs are the Holocaust songs,” Makosz said. “I love the way they talk about resistance, the way they tell stories. The songs allow me to understand this time even more than diaries. They speak simply, in a normal way, about the common and horrible things of this time.” ... Like many young Poles who have an interest in Jewish culture and tradition, Makosz has a family connection to Judaism. Her grandmother was Jewish. But, Makosz said, her grandmother never passed Jewish culture on to her children or grandchildren. But then, “I got to know these songs and their background,” Makosz said. “Through them I came to understand and appreciate my Jewish roots.” ... Makosz and her Yiddish songs are not the only example of the abiding interest in Jewish music and culture that permeates Poland — and particularly Krakow, known as its cultural capital — today. The Jewish Theater in Warsaw, which operated throughout the Communist era, remains active, staging plays in Yiddish. Its crowds are drawn not only from Poland’s several thousand Jews but also from the general population of Polish Catholics, who listen through translation on headsets ... Sarah Zarrow, a young scholar who is researching the resurgence of interest in Jewish music, especially klezmer, in Russia and Eastern Europe, said, “One of the reasons people are attracted to performing Jewish music is that they see it as a sort of fix for the Communist education system that stifled education surrounding Jewish matters, even in areas where there was a rich Jewish past.” She said that many people are drawn first to Jewish music and later to learn Hebrew or Yiddish, or to study about Judaism or Israel. “The way to Jewish music or arts seems very normal,” Zarrow said. Makosz agrees. When asked if her friends think it odd that she spends Sunday nights singing Yiddish songs, she laughed. Her teacher, Piekarski, added that with all the city’s wealth of klezmer music, Yiddish singing and Jewish-themed plays, “Krakow is not a cultural desert.”

The 'oldest hatred' thrives in Britain,

"In recent weeks, as the British general election campaign has loomed, it has seemed as if an anti-Jewish virus has been unleashed by the Left. Labor election posters, now withdrawn, portrayed the Jewish leader of the Conservative Party, Michael Howard, as a sinister cross between Fagin and Svengali. A Labor minister, Peter Hain, referred to Howard as an "attack mongrel." And in the House of Lords, a Muslim Labor peer hosted a rabid Swedish anti-Semite who informed his audience of parliamentarians that the Jews controlled the mass media, that they were treacherous and that British Muslims would turn the tide against "Judaic values." Jewish students are running a gauntlet of left-wing and Muslim hatred on campus, causing three Jewish officers of the National Union of Students to resign in protest at its indifference. Even now, the university teachers' union is debating a boycott of Israeli academics who fail to denounce Israel's policies. Jews are prominent in this hate-fest, too. Indeed, the media now like to use the good Jew/bad Jew device in public discussion, in which the "good" Jew dumps on Israel while the "bad" Jew defends it – thus additionally exposing the bad Jew to the charge of "dual loyalty" since the allegiance of Jews to Britain appears to have been made conditional upon their denouncing Israel. Demographic change and crude political calculation explain some of this. There are 1.8 million Muslims in Britain and 280,000 identifying Jews. Senior Labor figures say privately that, as a result, the Jews have got to get used to the fact that their concerns are no longer of any account, that the Muslim vote is the only show in town and that therefore the Labor Party will adopt the "Muslim narrative" on Israel/Palestine. There is no doubt that the paranoia and prejudice about Israel and the Jews that pours out of the Arab and Muslim world has significantly poisoned the atmosphere in Britain. But this is not the full explanation. There is a firestorm of anti-Jewish, anti-Israel and anti-American hatred in the wider population. On BBC panel shows, overwhelmingly conservative audiences cheer the view that America is the fount of world terror, that George W. Bush is more of a danger to the world than Saddam Hussein ever was, and that if any country is a menace to world peace through its weapons of mass destruction it is Israel. More generally, far from expressing horror and outrage at the rampant medieval and Nazi tropes of Jew-hatred pouring out of Arab and Muslim countries, the British media seem to agree that there is indeed a world Jewish conspiracy linking the Jews of America, Israel and the war in Iraq. In The Times, its premier columnist Simon Jenkins wrote in support of the argument that: " a small group of neo-conservatives contrived to take the greatest nation on Earth to war and kill thousands of people"; that they were "traitors to the American conservative tradition" who achieved a "seizure of Washington (and London) after 9/11" and that their "first commitment was to the defence of Israel." So according to Jenkins, the Jews possess extraordinary and sinister power which they exercise in a covert way to advance their own interests and harm the rest of mankind. People say openly it would have been better had Israel never been created. The "oldest hatred" has mutated from a desire to rid the world of the Jews into a desire to rid the world of the Jewish state ... The actual causes of terror – the indoctrination from the cradle in gross Jew hatred, paranoid delusions about the West and a cult of death sanctified and even mandated by religious edict – are studiously ignored by the media which present it instead as a dispute over land. Israel is demonized in a way that goes far beyond legitimate criticism."

"Luciana Berger is painfully aware that the public interest in her resignation as a student union official might not be entirely based on its merits. Rumours of a close friendship with Euan Blair have elevated an admirable stand against anti-Semitism in a university newspaper to the stuff of national debate. Being romantically linked with the Prime Minister's eldest son is big news, and the politics student knows that it follows her like an aura. It is impressive, therefore, that as she speaks of her fight against racism, Miss Berger, 23, puts her case so forcefully that her personal life does at times fade into the background. Bubbly and nervous, the strikingly beautiful postgraduate student spoke at breakneck speed, often failing to complete sentences as she tried to convey her feelings on the issue. She hit out passionately at the rise of "Left-wing anti-Semitism" and attacked the downgrading of prejudice against Jewish people to "second-class racism". She pulled no punches in accusing all political parties including Labour, of which she is a member, of inflaming racial tension by campaigning vociferously on immigration.Miss Berger, who last week resigned from the executive of the National Union of Students in protest at the union leadership "turning a blind eye" to anti-Semitism, accused all the main parties of behaving badly on the issue. "I think the insensitivity surrounding all parties' approach to asylum and immigration has a lot to say for the rise in not only anti-Semitism but any form of racism directed at immigrants" ... Miss Berger, who is studying a masters in government, politics and policy at Birkbeck College, London, said that it had been "misguided" and "wrong" for Labour to portray Michael Howard as a flying pig and Fagin in posters. One wonders what Tony Blair will make of the criticism given that he has met Miss Berger several times. His 21-year-old son is said to have grown close to the postgraduate student after splitting up with his long-term girlfriend, Katie Sanders, last year. He and Miss Berger met at Bristol University, where he is studying ancient history, when she delivered an anti-racism lecture there. Speaking for the first time about the rumours, Miss Berger said: "In terms of the coverage over the last week, I don't want my resignation to have been in vain and I'm grateful for the fact that it has received this coverage because it needs it. So in that sense - in this instance - it has been positive." Pressed on whether she is Euan's girlfriend, she said: "I'm aware that the newspapers have referred to me as that." She hugged her arms around her waist and bit her lip. "I don't talk about my personal life. I don't want to muddy the waters of this story. It should not be relevant." Except, of course, that it is relevant. If she has access to Mr Blair she can make these problems known at the highest level, can she not? "Have I met Tony Blair? Er, I have seen Tony Blair at conferences." But what of the reports that she has been to Downing Street? "I was invited as part of the Union of Jewish Students to go to the reception for Hanukkah at No 10 in December."Asked what she thought of the Prime Minister she was aghast. "What do I think of him? Is that relevant?" She paused for a few moments before saying: "I respect his convictions and his principled stances on various issues." ... Miss Berger said recent reports of a 42 per cent increase in attacks on Jews should leave society in no doubt of the dangers. "People have to understand what led to the Holocaust. It is about perpetrators, victims and bystanders, and people just bystanding and not doing anything is a problem." Miss Berger has been repeatedly described as a future Labour leader. However, as she talked it was unclear how she would fit into the identikit world of New Labour where rising female stars tend to be shorn-haired and more than a little dull. One senses that it would have to be a different Labour Party that took Miss Berger to its bosom. As things are, she is, well, far too fabulous.She laughed when asked how she felt about being described as a future Prime Minister. "Yes, I'm ambitious." In fact she appears to be a workaholic. She is studying in the evenings and rarely gets home before 10pm. One day a week she works at the Commission for Racial Equality. Next week she will travel to the United Nations in New York with the Jewish Human Rights Network."

"Three Jewish members of the National Union of Students have resigned from their posts, citing NUS inaction against antisemitism as their grounds. Luciana Berger (co-convenor anti-racism & anti-fascism campaign) and Mitch Simmons (co-convenor ethical & environmental campaign) both of the NUS National Executive Committee, together with Jonny Warren (NUS Steering Committee – who was standing for re-election) took the decision in front of NUS conference following a claimed year’s worth of inactivity by their National Union, and two days worth of apathy to antisemitism at the annual meeting. The students highlighted concern to NUS members over a leaflet distributed on a stall entitled ‘Zionism’ which referred to the classical antisemitic text: ‘the Protocols of the Elders of Zion’. The leaflet also made comparisons between the Jewish people and the Nazis. It was the second offensive piece of literature of three found on the stall, the first of which was entitled ‘The Jews are not a race’ and was referred to the steering committee by the National President who refused to take direct action. The Union of Jewish Students is calling on the national president and national secretary, together with the rest of the NEC to demonstrate leadership in the fight against antisemitism on campus, and to speak out and publicly apologise to Jewish students having failed to address the resignation of the Jewish NUS members. "After five years fighting racism in the student movement, I am devastated to find it so prevalent at the heart of my own union," said Luciana Berger. "It further upsets me that in order to bring Antisemitism to my executive’s attention I had to resign. It makes a mockery of everything NUS claims to stand for".  Danny Stone, UJS Campaigns Director commented:  “I am so disappointed that the NUS leadership has failed to support the Jewish students they claim to represent and we look to the newly elected members to help Jews on campus in a way that will shame last year’s team.”

"One week after federal prosecutors warned Hollywood to leave the Chabad Lubavitch alone, city commissioners responded with a stinging letter that virtually guarantees the fight over the orthodox synagogue's future is headed to federal court. Commissioners met behind closed doors Wednesday and decided to contest the U.S. Justice Department's finding that the city discriminates by not allowing the Chabad to worship in two adjacent Hollywood Hills homes. Last week, lawyers from the civil rights division threatened to sue unless the city dropped its five-year battle to evict the group from its houses on 46th Avenue. City Attorney Dan Abbott, acting on commission orders, sent a letter to Justice Department lawyers Wednesday stating the city had no intention of settling. The Chabad continues to hold its daily and weekend services despite the city's previous vote to evict them. Abbott was particularly critical of the Justice Department's settlement offer, which calls for the city to allow the synagogue to continue to operate, promise not to violate its rights again, and to periodically give the Justice Department updates on the situation. "Since your letter also indicates that any pre-suit negotiations would have to, at a minimum, result in a decree that would provide the Department each and every remedy [and then some] that it could hope to obtain in litigation ... the offer of `negotiation' ring[s] rather hollow," Abbott wrote ... The issue has sharply divided the city, spawned several lawsuits and cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees. Commission meetings on the issue draw hundreds to City Hall and provoke heated exchanges. On two occasions, debate has raged until the early morning hours, and one commission meeting ended at 6:30 a.m."

"In the forty-four years that he served as rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneersohn expanded the Lubavitch [Chabad] community to its greatest heights of influence. Although it numbers today approximately 200,000 members out of an an estimated thirteen million Jews worldwide, this does not reflect the movement's strength and presence in either the Jewish community or the larger world. At one time forced to practice in secret, the Lubavitch movement found in the United States a socity that granted full rights of citizenship without threat of violence or persecution. Operating from this base of unparalleled tolerance, Lubavitch Judaism now boasts a massive network of 2,400 outreach centers in two-thirds of the countries of the world, an annual budget eestimated at one billion dollars, and literally millions of Jews who have participated in its outreach campaigns. In recent years its mission has been to keep Jews fully within the Orthodox fold, which leads its activists to fight interfaith marriage, to reach out to single Jews, and to establish strong ties with influential Jews in politics, business, and entertainment. "[First an excerpt from the Jerusalem Post:] The construction of a Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw is a 'debt' that Poland owed both the Jewish people and the Polish nation, Warsaw Mayor Lech Kaczynski said Wednesday. "This museum is needed for my city, for my country, and is our debt to the Jewish people and to the history of Poland," Kaczynski said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post on the start of a three-day trip to Israel. The Mayor's first-ever state visit comes just weeks after the City of Warsaw agreed to contribute over $13 million towards the costs of the construction of the museum, with the Polish Government agreeing to pay an equal sum for the grandiose project. In all, the $26 million that the Polish authorities agreed to fund represents nearly 80 percent of the entire $33 million budget of the museum, with the remaining funds slated to come from Jewish philanthropists and Polish-Americans, the museum's project director, Jerzy Halbersztadt, said in a telephone interview from Warsaw. The long-planned state of the art museum, which aims to depict a millennium of vibrant Jewish culture in Poland before the Holocaust, is to be built on the site of the demolished Warsaw Ghetto. Construction of the museum is now scheduled to get underway next year, with the museum planning to open its doors to the public sometime in 2008, Halbersztadt said. The Polish Government's decision to fund the vast majority of the costs of the museum gave a huge boost to the project, which had previously become mired in financial difficulties. The museum's original $63 million budget, considered immensely extravagant by critics, especially during a time of economic difficulties in Poland, was subsequently halved, and is still high by Polish museum standards, the Warsaw Mayor said. After the renowned American architect Frank Gehry decided not to take part in the project, an international tender for the architectural construction of the museum was made public, with nine winners expected to be selected at the end of June. The idea to create such a museum in Poland, whose Jewish community numbers around 7,000 in a country of 39 million, gathered steam over the past years following a period of national soul-searching that stemmed, in part, from the publication of a book stating that it was Poles, not occupying Nazis, who murdered thousands of Jewish residents in the village of Jedwabne. The book, and the large media and public response it provoked, came at a time of increased Polish awareness of their mixed role in the Holocaust, and followed four decades of a virtual news and educational blackout on the subject during communist rule. Moreover, the Polish decision to fund over 75% of the project comes at a time of blossoming Polish-American and Israeli-Polish ties, especially in the military sphere, with Poland now considered to be one of the most pro-Israel countries in Europe. The cross-party Polish state and city funding is also seen as an attempt to counter the image of Poland as an anti-Semitic country ... First of all, to set the record straight, there is no such thing as a "Polish Jew"...only a Jewish Jew desecrating the territory of Poland.  Jewish writings abound with boasts of the Jews' hoodwinking the "stupid" and "gullible" gentiles into accepting what the Jews themselves term as their "cover nationalities". Secondly, the Poles and the Polish Nation do not owe any debt to the Jewish people.  If the truth be told and the proper actions taken, the International Jewish population should be forced to pay every Pole, as well as every person of Polish heritage in the world, at least tens of millions of euros a year in reparation for the genocidal damage done by Jews to Poles and Poland since the dawn of Polish History. J.T. "I appeal to you today to be part of a historical movement and moment that may bring an end to more than a century of colonisation, occupation and dispossession of Palestinians. I appeal to you as an Israeli Jew, who for years wished, and looked, for other ways to bring an end to the evil perpetrated against the Palestinians in the occupied territories, inside Israel and in the refugee camps. I devoted all my adult life, with others, creating a substantial peace movement inside Israel, in which, so we hoped, academia will play a leading role. But after 37 years of endless brutal and callous oppression of the people of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and after 57 years of colonisation and dispossession of the Palestinians as a whole, I think this hope is unrealistic and other means have to be looked at to end a conflict that endangers peace in the world at large. Violence and armed struggle have also failed, and they can't be easily condoned by people like myself who are basically pacifists at heart. Historical examples, such as in South Africa and Gandhi's movement in India, prove that there are peaceful means for achieving an end to the longest oppression and violation of human rights in the last century. Boycotts and outside pressure have never been attempted in the case of Israel, a state that wishes to be included in the civilised democratic world. Israel has indeed enjoyed such a status since its creation in 1948 and, therefore, succeeded in fending off the many United Nations' resolutions that condemned its policies and, moreover, managed to obtain a preferential status in the European Union. Israeli academia's elevated position in the global scholarly community epitomises this western support for Israel as the "only democracy" in the Middle East. Shielded by this particular support for academia, and other cultural media, the Israeli army and security services can go on, and will go on, demolishing houses, expelling families, abusing citizens and killing, almost every day, children and women without being accountable regionally and globally for their crimes. Military and financial support to Israel is significant in enabling the Jewish state to pursue the policies it does. Any possible measure of decreasing such aid is most welcome in the struggle for peace and justice in the Middle East. But the cultural image in Israel feeds the political decision in the west to support unconditionally the Israeli destruction of Palestine and the Palestinians ... Calling for a boycott of your own state and academia is not an easy decision for a member of that academia. But I learned how the concerned academic communities, worldwide, could mobilise at the right moment when I was threatened with expulsion by my own university, the University of Haifa, in May 2002. A very precise and focused policy of pressure on the university allowed me, albeit under restriction and systematic harassment, to purse my classes and research, which are aimed at exposing the victimisation of the Palestinians throughout the years. This is a particular important avenue, as I am the only one who does it in my own university, and one of the few who does it in the country as a whole, and also because the university has a large community of Palestinian students, who are prevented by draconian regulations from expressing their anger and frustration at what had been, and is, done against their people. These students have felt totally isolated since the university established close links with the security apparatuses in the country. The fact that the university is closely connected to the security services - by providing postgraduate degrees - is by itself not a crime, but as these are the agencies that exercise on a daily basis the occupation in the Palestinian areas, their presence in the campus means academia is significantly involved in perpetuating the evil. As I learned from my own case, outside pressure is effective in a country where people want to be regarded as part of the civilized world, but their government, with their explicit and implicit help, pursues policies which violate every known human and civil right. Neither the UN, nor the US and European governments, and societies, have sent a message to Israel that these policies are unacceptable and have to be stopped. It is up to the civil societies, through organisations like yours, to send messages to Israeli academics, businessmen, artists, hi-tech industrialists and every other section in that society, that there is a price tag attached to such policies."

Israel arrests Netherlands consul,

"Yitzhaki was arrested after flying to Israel. Israeli police have arrested one of the country's diplomats serving in the Netherlands for allegedly issuing passports in exchange for bribes. The Israeli consul in The Hague, Uriel Yitzhaki, was arrested after flying to Ben Gurion airport outside Tel Aviv. An investigation was started in July 2004 after reports that passports were being issued to people ineligible to receive them. Mr Yitzhaki, 56, is expected to appear before magistrates later on Wednesday. The head of the International Crimes Unit in the Israeli police, Amichai Shai, said undercover officers had been investigating Mr Yitzhaki in The Hague for several months in a joint operation with the Dutch and other police forces."

Israeli Lobby Reportedly Fires 2 Top Aides in Spying Inquiry,

"An influential pro-Israel lobbying organization has dismissed two senior employees caught up in a federal investigation of possible Israeli spying in the United States, according to people who have been formally briefed on the case. The group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, dismissed its policy director, Steven Rosen, and its senior Iran analyst, Keith Weissman, in recent days. The two employees had been on paid administrative leave, according to people close to the organization who have been informed of the action. Their dismissals suggest that Aipac is seeking to distance itself from the investigation, which was disclosed last summer, as federal prosecutors and lawyers in the case have engaged in futile efforts to settle the inquiry with a plea bargain. The case has cast a shadow over the group's activities. The committee has said that the inquiry is baseless, but that it has nonetheless stirred concern among supporters. Next month, the organization is to hold its annual meeting, featuring an appearance by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who has praised the organization's work. The two former employees have been under scrutiny in a long-running F.B.I. inquiry into accusations that Israel had obtained classified information about the Bush administration's policy deliberations on Iran. Nobody has been charged with wrongdoing."
