THIS WEEK'S JEWISH NEWS

[When all is said and done, Jewish butt MUST be kissed. Once the Jewish Lobby lines up as your enemy, you're pinned against the wall. But this story is great. An Indian chief apologizes to Jews for telling them to stop shitting on Native peoples and, in kind, the Jewish Lobby wants his head. Good public relations! Jews know how to really do it! Stir that "anti-Semitic" brew! And throw in the pepper! Jewish arrogance and self-obsessive blindness is beyond comprehension.]
Manitoba chief apologizes to Jews for letter to Winnipeg newspaper,
by Michelle Macafee, Yahoo! News, April 18, 2005
"The chief of a southern Manitoba reserve apologized to Jews Monday for warning that media coverage of the David Ahenakew hate trial will produce a dramatic rise in aboriginals' hatred of Jews. "I realize now that my approach, tone and some of my comments were deeply hurtful and offensive to some members of the Jewish community," Roseau River Chief Terrance Nelson told a news conference. "I wish to apologize to the Jewish people of Manitoba and Canada for any offence, anger or hurt I may have caused." But the B'Nai Brith League for Human Rights called the apology inadequate and repeated its call for Nelson's resignation. David Matas, the organization's lawyer, said someone in Nelson's position of power should have a better understanding of anti-Semitism instead of repeating his claims that the concentration of "Jewish-owned" media in Canada is allowing hate to be published about aboriginals. "It's an apology that shows he doesn't get it," said Matas. "He says it's not about religion, but then he identifies the religion of the Jewish writers. It would be ridiculous to criticize all Christians because one Christian writer says something wrong." Nelson landed in hot water last week after writing in a letter to the Winnipeg Free Press that punishing Ahenakew would only make him a martyr. "Natives are killing whites now, soon they will be killing police officers on a regular basis," he wrote. Nelson said then, and repeated Monday, that he did not agree with Ahenakew's views, but also claimed Jews own and control much of Canada's media and blamed that media for ignoring the suffering of native people. Ahenakew, former head of the Assembly of First Nations and a member of the Order of Canada, is on trial in Saskatoon for the wilful promotion of hatred. Court has heard that in a published interview two years ago, he called Jews a disease and suggested the Holocaust was justified. A judge will render a verdict on June 10. Nelson's comments drew a sharp rebuke from Assembly of First Nations Grand Chief Phil Fontaine that was echoed in the Commons on Monday by federal Justice Minister Irwin Cotler." [Irwin Cotler is a Jewish Israel-firster, for God's sake! What a total strangulation the First Nation people in Canada are getting by Jews at every turn.]

Africa Israel closes deals worth $510m. in Moscow, New York.
By DANIEL KENNEMER, Jerusalem Post, April 18, 2005
"Africa Israel has won the Moscow Municipality's tender for the construction of the Belarus Mall, Africa Israel said Sunday, putting its investment in the project at some $300 million. Africa Israel participated in the tender through its Russian construction subsidiary, Stroiinkom-K, in which it holds an 80% stake. The tender focused on the size of the city's stake in the mall after the project's completion, while the cost of constructing the shopping center itself will be the sole responsibility of the winning firm. Africa Israel proposed that the city's stake be fixed at 25% in its winning bid, which was accompanied by a deposit of $3m. in collateral to be held by the city until a detailed agreement is signed. The shopping center is to be built beneath the large square in front of Belorussky Station in central Moscow. Two glass structures will provide the 150,000-square-meter subterranean shopping center with natural light, doubling as an illuminated dome and pyramid above ground at night. Further beneath the surface, the Moscow Municipality has already built a metro station and parking structure to serve the mall above, Africa Israel said, noting that the city itself had funded that part of the project. The mall's construction is expected be completed in three years. The Belarus Mall is to be part of the "Moscow City" project for the surrounding urban district, in the context of which millions of square meters will be built for offices, shopping facilities, and hotels. Moscow's municipal offices are also slated to be moved into the project zone, which will be linked to the city center and surrounding airports through a newly constructed network of roads, bridges, and railways. Separately, Africa Israel agreed Friday to purchase a 37-story Manhattan building located near Wall Street with some 100,000 square meters of office space for roughly $210m., through a local subsidiary in which Africa Israel holds a 65% stake alongside Shaya Boymelgreen's 35%, the company said in a statement to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange."

Adler jailed but not contrite,
The Age (Australia), April 15, 2005
"Disgraced businessman Rodney Adler was a deliberate liar who still did not fully accept he had done anything wrong, a judge said today as he jailed the former high flyer for more than two years. The former HIH director apologised as he entered the NSW Supreme Court today, knowing he would go to jail, but Justice John Dunford said Adler had not shown true contrition. Adler is the first director of the failed insurer to go to jail as part of a $28 million investigation into Australia's biggest corporate collapse. Tonight he swapped his suit for a prison uniform at Sydney's Silverwater jail, but most likely will serve his time in a minimum security prison. HIH founder and former chief executive Ray Williams may follow Adler tomorrow when he is sentenced on three charges relating to his crimes at the company. Justice Dunford sentenced Adler today to four-and-a-half years' jail, with a minimum term of two-and-a-half years. "The offences are serious and display an appalling lack of commercial morality," the judge said."Although he accepts that his conduct is unacceptable to others, he does not really acknowledge to himself the full extent of its wrongfulness in the business sense." Justice Dunford criticised Adler's attempt to pass off lies he told to obtain $2 million from HIH for one of his failing companies as "stupid errors of judgement". "They were not stupid errors of judgement but deliberate lies," the judge said ... "Mr Adler was in a position of trust as a director of HIH but he put his own financial interests before the interests of HIH shareholders," said ASIC chairman Jeffrey Lucy. "The sentence delivered today by Justice Dunford shows how the courts will deal with directors who fail to uphold their legal duty." [More on this story at the Sydney Morning Herald.]

Anti-Defamation League honors advocates at annual awards ceremony. The president of the Saint Raphael Healthcare System Tuesday night received the highest honor bestowed by the Anti-Defamation League of Greater New Haven
,
New Haven Register, April 20, 2005
"David W. Benfer was given the chapter’s 43rd annual Torch of Liberty Award for his dedication as an advocate in both health care and community issues Benfer said more must be done to further the ADL’s mission of fighting bigotry. "I am most humbled to receive (the honor)," he told the crowd of more than 500 at Congregation B’Nai Jacob. "And I recognize the responsibility that goes with it. … We must focus not on our differences, but what we have in common."
Benfer serves on the boards of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the Community Soup Kitchen and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas. He joined St. Raphael in 1999. John Crawford, a former hospital board member, alluded to a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson on measuring a man’s success by the number of lives he has made better."By the number of lives you have touched, you have succeeded," Crawford said." [Someone say Ralph Waldo Emerson? "The sufferance which is the badge of the Jew has made him in these days, the ruler of the rulers of the earth." [Emerson, p. 39] "[Emerson] saw Judaism, the Jewish idea, as a stumbling block to authentic human liberation. The Jewish God was cruel; the Jewish Law stifling. What was bad about Christianity was its Jewish substance. At the less ideological level, his work is also peppered with anti-Jewish sentiments ... In his journal entry for 3 July 1830 he wrote: 'In the Allston Gallery the Polish Jews are an offense to me; they degrade and animalize." [Michael, Robert, 9-7-98]

Papal hopeful is a former Hitler Youthl,
by Justin Sparks, John Follain and Christopher Morgan, Times (UK), April 17, 2005
"The wartime past of a leading German contender to succeed John Paul II may return to haunt him as cardinals begin voting in the Sistine Chapel tomorrow to choose a new leader for 1 billion Catholics. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, whose strong defence of Catholic orthodoxy has earned him a variety of sobriquets — including “the enforcer”, “the panzer cardinal” and “God’s rottweiler” — is expected to poll around 40 votes in the first ballot as conservatives rally behind him. Although far short of the requisite two-thirds majority of the 115
votes, this would almost certainly give Ratzinger, 78 yesterday, an early lead in the voting. Liberals have yet to settle on a rival candidate who could come close to his tally. Unknown to many members of the church, however, Ratzinger’s past includes brief membership of the Hitler Youth movement and wartime service with a German army anti- aircraft unit. Although there is no suggestion that he was involved in any atrocities, his service may be contrasted by opponents with the attitude of John Paul II, who took part in anti-Nazi theatre performances in his native Poland and in 1986 became the first pope to visit Rome’s synagogue. “John Paul was hugely appreciated for what he did for and with the Jewish people,” said Lord Janner, head of the Holocaust Education Trust, who is due to attend ceremonies today to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. “If they were to appoint someone who was on the other side in the war, he would start at a disadvantage, although it wouldn’t mean in the long run he wouldn’t be equally understanding of the concerns of the Jewish world.” The son of a rural Bavarian police officer, Ratzinger was six when Hitler came to power in 1933. His father, also called Joseph, was an anti-Nazi whose attempts to rein in Hitler’s Brown Shirts forced the family to move home several times. In 1937 Ratzinger’s father retired and the family moved to Traunstein, a staunchly Catholic town in Bavaria close to the Führer’s mountain retreat in Berchtesgaden. He joined the Hitler Youth aged 14, shortly after membership was made compulsory in 1941. He quickly won a dispensation on account of his training at a seminary. “Ratzinger was only briefly a member of the Hitler Youth and not an enthusiastic one,” concluded John Allen, his biographer."

Rally supporting Holocaust deniers held in Hungary,
Jerusalem Post, April 16, 2005
"Some 200 Hungarian far-right supporters, including skinheads, held a rally Saturday outside the German Embassy in Budapest in support of Ernst Zundel and others jailed in Germany for denying the Holocaust.
The protest was held on Hungary's Holocaust Memorial Day, which commemorates the day in 1944 when authorities began deporting Hungarian Jews to Nazi concentration camps. Organizers - including the Blood and Honor skinhead group, the Hungarian National Front and Conscience 88 - tried to give a petition to the German chancellor in support of Zundel, a white supremacist jailed in Germany, but no Embassy officials were present to receive the appeal. Demonstrators said they were protesting against the "enemies of thought" in Germany. Gusztav Zoltai, executive director of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities, said it was shameful that authorities allowed the rally to be held on Holocaust Memorial Day."

[Powerful and hysterical propagandaist Alan Dershowitz is a symbol for everything sick and twisted in the Jewish community. And Norman Finkelstein is a symbol for a tiny glint of hope, but he's only a floating thorn in a vast Judeocentric sewer system.]
About the Abuse of History; a new Controversy Surrounds Norman Finkelstein,
by Julian Hanich, 04/13/05 "Tagesspiegel" [transl. Information Clearing House]
"The American historian Norman Finkelstein, whose book "The Holocaust Industry" provoked a fierce debate in Germany four years ago, is creating new furor. There are protests in the USA against the publication of his new book "Beyond Chutzpah : On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History". Finkelstein plans to bring the book out in August through the
University of California Press. The attorney and Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz, has, however, expressed his vigorous reservations against Finkelstein's book in a number of letters to the publishers as well as to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's legal department. "This would be a scandal equal to Holocaust denial," Dershowitz told the Tagesspiegel.
In his new book Finkelstein attacks the new anti-Semitism. Primarily, however, it is about the "dishonesty in the research on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", as it is called in one of the publisher's synopses. The point being : The criticism is aimed at no other than Alan Dershowitz. Finkelstein makes serious allegations against Dershowitz' book "The Case for Israel" which has recently appeared in Germany through the Europa Verlag and was called "an intelligent argument" by The New York Times. Finkelstein maintains that Dershowitz "systematically distorted facts". On the basis of these accusations the publishers employed six expert appraisers on the book. The spring publishing date which had been planned thus had to be postponed. Dershowitz announced that he planned to sue Finkelstein for libel. A representative of the University of California Press said that there had been interest in "Beyond Chutzpah" expressed in Germany, and that negotiations are in process with the Piper Verlag, which had published the translation of Finkelstein's "The Holocaust Industry". Meanwhile Finkelstein has received support from Noam Chomsky. The linguist and radical critic of the American and Israeli foreign policies called "Beyond Chutzpah" a "very solid, important, and highly informative" book. Dershowitz, on the other hand, says that the book can be published - but by a "Neo Nazi publisher" and not a university. "Finkelstein's readership comprises primarly of Neo Nazis and fanatics" says Dershowitz. With Finkelstein and Chomsky who criticize, and Deshowitz who defends Israel, two factions of American Judaism collide."

9th Circuit OKs Suit Against Vatican Over Holocaust,
by Jeff Chorney, Yahoo! Financial News, April 19, 2005
"Just in time for the picking of a new pope, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decided Monday that Holocaust survivors can pursue the Vatican Bank for profiting from a Nazi puppet regime. The decision in Alperin v. Vatican Bank, 05 C.D.O.S. 3216, revives a class action that had been dismissed by San Francisco U.S. District Judge Maxine Chesney. Groups of Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian Holocaust victims -- potentially hundreds of thousands, according to plaintiffs attorneys -- had sued the Vatican Bank, the Franciscan Order, the Croatian Liberation Movement and various banks in 1999. Plaintiffs allege the defendants "profited from the genocidal acts of the Croatian Ustasha political regime," which was installed by the Nazis during World War II, according to the opinion. The Ustasha regime operated death camps where as many as 700,000 Serbs died. After the Croatian government collapsed at the end of the war, its leaders fled to Italy and some assets went into Vatican control, according to a State Department report. Plaintiffs allege that the Vatican Bank, an arm of the sovereign Vatican government, essentially laundered the money, said plaintiffs lawyer Thomas Easton of Eugene, Ore. Easton said he believed it was "just a coincidence" that the decision came on the first day cardinals deliberated who will be the next pope. However, Easton hopes the Catholic church takes advantage of the timing and agrees to settle the case. "I would think a new pope might want to clean the decks of this kind of stuff," Easton said. "I'm thinking we have a good chance to settle now." The claims could exceed $100 million, according to a press release put out by Easton's partner in the case, Jonathan Levy of Ohio. Pepperdine University School of Law Professor Kathryn Lee Boyd argued the plaintiffs case at the 9th Circuit."

Bay Area Holocaust lawsuit targets Vatican Bank and CIA,
by ANDY ALTMAN-OHR, Jewish Bulletin
"In a fight to win restitution for people like 84-year-old Allan Herskovich of El Cerrito -- a native of what was formerly Yugoslavia who lost his parents and other family members at Auschwitz -- two lawyers are taking on a couple of formidable opponents, the CIA and the Vatican Bank. Tom Easton and Jonathan Levy, who represent Herskovich and 27 other plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed last year, continued their push two weeks ago by asking a federal judge in San Francisco to get the Vatican Bank to divulge its ownership ... Easton and Levy contend that the Vatican Bank and other private banks profited illegally from the Holocaust by accepting and laundering valuables stolen by the Nazis and the Nazi-backed Ustashe regime, which went on a reign of terror in Yugoslavia. The Vatican Bank and the Franciscan Order were named in the original lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco in November 1999. In September, a federal judge ruled that the Swiss National Bank could be added to the lawsuit ... The other part of Levy's fight right now is the lawsuit against the Vatican Bank. In responding to the plaintiffs' motion for disclosure of ownership, the Vatican Bank said in court papers that the motion was "burdensome, premature and in the public domain," according to Levy. "Who owns it is very important in the way the lawsuit proceeds," he added. "It's a very mysterious organization. In their legal papers, they quoted an Italian professor saying there are 30 sources that say what the ownership of the Vatican Bank is, but he didn't list a single one." Levy said the owner might always be the current pope, in this case Pope John Paul II. "If that's the case, then we'd have to determine in what capacity the pope owns the bank," Levy said. "Or maybe their charter lists God as the owner."

[It looks like the new pope will be under the Jewish thumb; a German pope can only be a dishrag for Jewish demand, vis-a-vis enforced German guilt for the "Holocaust." Endlessly "atoning" to Jews for the "sin" of "anti-Semitism."]
Anti-Defamation League Welcomes Election of Cardinal Ratzinger As New Pope,
U.S. Newswire, April 19, 2005
"The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today welcomed the election of German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the new Pope, Benedict XVI. Under his leadership in Germany and Rome, the Catholic Church made important strides in improving Catholic-Jewish relations and atoning for the sin of anti-Semitism. Cardinal Ratzinger has been a leader in this effort and has made important statements in the spirit of sensitivity and reconciliation with the Jewish people. Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National director, issued the following statement: We welcome the new Papacy of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. From the Jewish perspective, the fact that he comes from Europe is important, because he brings with him an understanding and memory of the painful history of Europe and of the 20th Century experience of European Jewry. Having lived through World War II, Cardinal Ratzinger has great sensitivity to Jewish history and the Holocaust. He has shown this sensitivity countless times, in meetings with Jewish leadership and in important statements condemning anti-Semitism and expressing profound sorrow for the Holocaust. We remember with great appreciation his Christmas reflections on December 29, 2000, when he memorably expressed remorse for the anti-Jewish attitudes that persisted through history, leading to "deplorable acts of violence" and the Holocaust. Cardinal Ratzinger said: "Even if the most recent, loathsome experience of the Shoah (Holocaust) was perpetrated in the name of an anti-Christian ideology, which tried to strike the Christian faith at its Abrahamic roots in the people of Israel, it cannot be denied that a certain insufficient resistance to this atrocity on the part of Christians can be explained by an inherited anti-Judaism present in the hearts of not a few Christians." Though as a teenager he was a member of the Hitler Youth, all his life Cardinal Ratzinger has atoned for the fact. In our years of working on improving Catholic-Jewish ties, ADL has had opportunities to work with Cardinal Ratzinger. We look forward to continuing that relationship."

[The Indians of Canada begin to awake to Jewish social and political hegemony that ensnarls and suffocates them, like all others:]
Two peoples, divided by one bigot,
By SAM SER, Jerusalem Post, April 19, 2005
"There's trouble between the tribes in Canada – the Israelite ones and the aboriginal ones, that is. It isn't just that David Ahenakew, a former head of the Assembly of First Nations who earned an Order of Canada medal in 1978 for advancing the cause of his people, is back in the headlines. His hate-speech trial for an anti-Semitic rant he made in December 2002 was expected to do that. But the highly public nature of the trial, which wound down earlier this month, has generated a separate controversy over relations between Jews and Indians in Canada even sharper than the original scandal. What is not debatable is the content of Ahenakew's speech. After praising Hitler and referring to Jews as a "disease" during a conference of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, Ahenakew told a Saskatoon StarPhoenix reporter that Jews had started World War II and controlled Germany before Hitler came along. "That's why he fried six million of those guys," Ahenakew said. He apologized and bowed out of public life after the interview was
published. That wasn't enough for the police, who charged Ahenakew with the willful promotion of hatred against an identifiable group. If found guilty, Ahenakew could face up to six months in jail. He could also have his membership in the Order of Canada revoked, a move that has already been called for by many segments of Canadian society ... On the other hand, Roseau River Anishinabe Chief Terrance Nelson does not feel the need that other Indians feel for self-criticism. If anything, Nelson believes the Ahenakew trial only highlights what he calls the willful ignorance of Canada's Jewish community regarding the plight of First Nations. The blame for that, he says, falls mainly on "the Jewish-controlled media" – from the outlets under the umbrella of CanWest, which is owned by the Jewish Asper family, down to the brash, conservative radio host and columnist Charles Adler. "One of the things I wanted the Jewish community here in Canada to recognize is how bad race relations are here," Nelson told the Post. "We have tried to raise the issue with Jewish organizations and Jewish media here about some of the things Jews have been saying about First Nations people. "I mean, David Ahenakew is a hate-monger... fine. However, let's not just look at this one issue in race relations between Jewish people and First Nations people in Canada. It's not just one side, it's not just David Ahenakew. "Our people have fought all over the world for other people's rights" through service in the Canadian Army, Nelson continued. "Yet we've never seen them [the Aspers] standing up for us... on the disappearance of our women, on the severe police brutality that they seem to deny. I need to see visible support from the Canadian Jewish community for the Canadian First Nations. And I just don't see it." Alan Yusim refutes such charges. As Winnipeg director of B'nai Brith Canada, Yusim has been involved in a series of efforts to reach out to Indians in central Canada. B'nai Brith has met with the national assembly of First Nations chiefs, and initiated a program at the University of Manitoba-Winnipeg called "Taking Action Against Hate" that promotes diversity training and fights racism, vandalism and violence. In 2003, the organization sent 10 First Nations educators from Manitoba to Israel to learn about the Holocaust and draw inspiration from Israel's development. Now Yusim wants to bring Israeli hi-tech and agricultural know-how to the vast First Nations lands in central Canada, to help them overcome their dependence on government funding. "The old canard about Jewish media control... for a persecuted minority in Canada to have one of their leaders and representatives use the Jews as a scapegoat serves no productive purpose – and will actually diminish their cause," he told the Post."

Israel documentary forum celebrates Canada,
By Hannah Brown, Jerusalem Post, April 19, 2005
"Rudy Buttignol, creative head of network programming for TV Ontario, a Canadian television network, is looking for documentaries that tell a good story, and has come all the way to Israel to find them. He's here to participate in the Israel Forum for International Documentary Co-Productions, being held in Tel Aviv today and tomorrow at the Eshkol Payis Auditorium. The Forum gives Israeli documentary filmmakers the opportunity to pitch works-in-progress and finished films to the heads of television networks from around the world. Buttignol came to the Forum's second annual meeting in 2000, and has attended every year since. "There were years when people were so afraid to come, but Rudy always showed up," says Orna Yarmut, the Forum director. "Then, when people heard he was coming, it convinced them to come as well. He really helped us keep it going." Buttignol says simply that he comes because he's interested in acquiring Israeli documentaries. "What's amazing about the Israeli documentary community is that the quality of its work is so high," he says. "Israel's output is impressive. I can't think of another country its size that produces as many quality films." Buttignol in particular, and Canadian networks in general, have been especially supportive of Israel's documentary industry in recent years. Since the Forum began six years ago, more than 15
Israeli documentaries have been commissioned, financed and broadcast on Canadian television

Court okays extradition of Rosenstein,
By ETGAR LEFKOVITS, Jerusalem Post, April 19, 2005
"The Jerusalem district court on Tuesday approved the extradition of suspected Israeli mobster Ze'ev Rosenstein to the US, where he is facing drug trafficking charges. The 50-year-old reputed crime boss and underworld kingpin, who had
eluded Israeli law enforcement official for decades, was arrested in November following a joint Israeli-US investigation for allegedly smuggling more than 700,000 ecstasy pills into the United States. "The US has an interest in trying the defendant, because while the (criminal) connection was made in Israel, it was carried out entirely outside of Israel," Judge Ya'acov Tsaban wrote in his decision. "The drugs were distributed and meant for distribution in the US, the investigation began and was conducted there, most of the evidence is there, and most of the (drug) network members were tried there," he added ... The government agreed to the US extradition request after American officials said they would allow Rosenstein - believed to be a dominant force on the world Ecstasy market - to serve out any future sentence in Israel in accordance with the law ... Long suspected of being one of Israel's top mobsters, Rosenstein, who was once nicknamed 'public enemy number one,' had eluded the grasps of law enforcement officials for three decades, except for a short prison term for armed robbery in the 1970s. A year and a half ago, suspected mob rivals tried to assassinate Rosenstein in the heart of Tel Aviv in the seventh attempt on his life. While Rosenstein escaped with scratches in the attack, three innocent passers-by were killed in the shooting. The attack catapulted the often-dormant issue of organized crime to the forefront of public debate, only to recede into the sidelines several months later."

[This is a propaganda email circulated by the National Jewish Democratic Council, i.e., a manifestation of Jewish Democrats and Republicans struggling to seize the ground for most eminent Judeocentrism. Central issue as always: "anti-Semitism."]
Strange Bedfellows, Volume 1,
April 19, 2005
"Conservatives and Malaysia (This item is the first in an ongoing series intended to shine a light on the disturbing alliances formed by Republicans and conservatives.) The Washington Post reported this weekend that financial
interests appear to have led the influential right-wing Heritage Foundation to be more supportive of Malaysia and its virulently anti-Semitic leaders. (For full article, please see: http://ga4.org/ct/A1zvyxM18zML/ ) Former Malaysian Prime
Minister Mahathir Mohamad famously noted in a speech in October
of 2003 that "Jews control the world,"
and that "Israel and the Jews are the enemy of 1.3 billion downtrodden Muslims." The Post describes the Heritage Foundation as "one of Washington's most influential conservative think tanks," adding that with "a $30 million-plus annual budget, Heritage produces papers and policy statements that have influenced Republican administrations and the Republican congressional majority." The Post article notes that the conservative think tank was at one time highly critical of Malaysia and its leaders. But the organization became much more accommodating in the summer of 2001, at the same time that a "consulting firm co-founded by Edwin J. Feulner, Heritage's president, began representing Malaysian business interests," according to the Post. Who else is on the Malaysian payroll? Feulner's wife -- Linda Feulner -- is a "senior adviser" for the firm, and Ken Sheffer, who is paid $75,000 per year by Heritage, is the chief operating officer of the same consulting firm. The apparent result of this profitable relationship? A sudden shift in Heritage's views on Malaysia -- resulting in Heritage-sponsored briefings and trips to Malaysia for members of Congress, including then-House GOP whip Tom DeLay. (For more information, please see: http://ga4.org/ct/_pzvyxM18zMS/ ) And shortly after Mahathir's 2003 screed against Jews, a Heritage scholar wrote that Congress "went too far in its efforts to punish Mahathir by passing an amendment to cut off military aid to Malaysia." The Heritage scholar actually tried to explain away the anti-Semitism of Malaysia's leader: "Judging Malaysian tolerance for people of the Jewish faith is more difficult because Malaysia has no discernible Jewish community." "It is repugnant that business interests could lead any non-profit 'think-tank' to try to explain away the virulent anti-Semitism of Malaysia's past leaders, or to defend their
repressive policies," said National Jewish Democratic Council Executive Director Ira N. Forman. "No sanction should ever be given to rhetoric as unacceptable as Mahathir's. Unfortunately, after Mahathir made those comments in 2003, it took President Bush four days and a great deal of domestic criticism before the White House let it be known that Bush privately chastised Mahathir. In contrast, as the Post article notes, 'On a visit to the country, Vice President Al Gore in 1998 pointedly praised government dissidents and walked out of a banquet in protest of
Mahathir's policies.'

Air Force Cadets Complain of Religious Harassment by Christian
Evangelists
,
By Robert Weller, Tampa Tribune, April 19, 2005
" Less than two years after it was plunged into a rape scandal, the Air Force Academy is scrambling to address complaints that evangelical Christians wield so much influence at the school that anti-Semitism and other forms of religious harassment have become pervasive. There have been 55 complaints of religious discrimination at the academy in the past four years, including cases in which a Jewish cadet was told the Holocaust was revenge for the death of Jesus and another was called a Christ killer by a fellow cadet. The 4,300-student school recently started requiring staff members and cadets to take a 50-minute religious-tolerance class. "There are things that have happened that have been inappropriate. And they have been addressed and resolved," said Col. Michael Whittington, the academy's chief chaplain. More than 90 percent of the cadets identify themselves as Christian. A cadet survey in 2003 found that half had heard religious slurs and jokes, and that many non-Christians believed Christians get special treatment."

Arrest Warrant Issued for Natasha Lyonne,
By Laura Italiano and Michael White, Fox News, April 19, 2005
"An angry Manhattan judge issued an arrest warrant Monday for movie star Natasha Lyonne after she skipped court amid charges she went berserk on a fellow tenant and threatened to "sexually molest" her dog. Lyonne, 26, the co-star of such flicks as "American Pie" and "Slums of Beverly Hills," initially showed up for her morning hearing on misdemeanor criminal-mischief, criminal-trespass and harassment charges. Cops say a wild-eyed Lyonne stormed into the upstairs apartment of Nicole Scheinder around 10:50 p.m. Dec. 17, screamed at her, tossed her belongings around and even ripped a mirror off the wall. The crazed actress then picked up Scheinder's little floppy-eared pooch and threatened menacingly, "I'm going to sexually molest your dog," police said.Scheinder refused to comment yesterday.A neighbor said Lyonne, who also starred in the indie film "Max and Grace" about a mentally ill couple that falls in love, had moved out of the brownstone a few weeks ago.Her latest woes come after she crashed her car in Miami Beach in 2001 and wound up pleading guilty to drunken-driving charges. They also are part of a scathing upcoming article in Jane magazine penned by her former friend and landlord, actor Michael Rapaport. Rapaport, of "Boston Public" and "Mighty Aphrodite," painfully details how he watched his pal spiral into increasingly troubling behavior at the brownstone, which he owns. When she finally left, "There was garbage everywhere, scripts, contracts, pages from Hustler magazine . . . and things I can't even mention," he writes. "It looked like a grenade had gone off in her bedroom."

Supporters wonder what it means as ambassador prepares to visit Pollard,
By Matthew E. Berger, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, April 18, 2005
"Arrangements are being worked out for Israel’s ambassador to the United States to meet with Jonathan Pollard at his North Carolina prison in the next few weeks. Daniel Ayalon will meet with Pollard at the request of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who called for the meeting during his talks last week in the United States. An Israeli official in Washington said Sharon also informed the Bush administration that Ayalon would meet the former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst and convicted Israeli spy at the Butner Correctional Institution. “The goals are to check on his situation, see how his conditions are and give him a message of concern from the government of Israel,” the official said, on condition of anonymity. The meeting, a first by an Israeli ambassador to the United States, comes at a delicate time for Israeli politics and in relations between the Jewish state and America. Israel’s plan to disengage from settlements in the Gaza Strip has infuriated the right wing in Israel, many of the same people who long have advocated for Pollard’s release ... Pollard was sentenced to life in prison in 1987, after pleading guilty to spying for Israel. The sentence was considered harsh at the time, and went against a plea bargain between Pollard and government officials. A classified 40-page declaration written by then-Secretary of State Casper Weinberger outlined damage Pollard caused to U.S. interests, and is considered responsible for the severity of the sentence. Jews in the United States and Israel have pressed successive American administrations for clemency for Pollard. Reports of the meeting were seen in Israel as a gesture to Israel’s right wing, and renewed speculation that Pollard’s release coud play a role in future negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The Israeli newspaper Yediot Achronot reported Friday that Israeli sources “hinted” that Bush would pardon and release Pollard in exchange for Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. But that remains unlikely because the withdrawal was Sharon’s brainchild, not something Bush had to sweeten for Sharon to accept. However, Bush has become invested in the plan since approving it last year, and could be interested in making it more politically viable for Sharon, who faces strong opposition to the plan within his ruling Likud Party. It wouldn’t be the first time that Pollard has been dangled as an incentive for Israeli concession. President Clinton reportedly agreed to release Pollard to get Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to back the Wye Peace Accord in 1998, but Clinton changed his mind after strong objections from George Tenet, who was CIA director at the time."

Bush administration's "Ministry of Truth" attacks American journalists who fail to adhere to the official line,
By Wayne Madsen, Online Journal, April 18, 2005
"After revelations that the Bush White House cleared a gay male prostitute as a daily credentialed member of the White House press corps and that the administration was paying journalistic shills like Armstrong Williams, Maggie Gallagher, Michael McManus, and Karen Ryan to pump out pro-Bush propaganda to the media, nothing should come as any surprise when it comes to the Fourth Estate's buckling under to political pressure from the right-wing regime that rules America. What is surprising is that, in addition to using the media to concoct favorable propaganda, the Bush administration maintains an office in the State Department that keeps an eye on American and other journalists and does not hesitate to attack them for straying from the party line. To show how much censorship exists in America today, this journalist would have likely never known about the existence of a one-man office in the State Department that acts to debunk and attack anything the Bush administration deems is false. Thanks to a recent report by veteran America watcher and journalist Jyri Raivio in Finland's Helsingin Sanomat newspaper, it can now be reported in the United States that the State Department uses taxpayers' money to attack American journalists who refuse to parrot the Bush administration's disinformation and propaganda. The head of the State Department's "Counter Mis-Information 'Team'" is Todd Leventhal, a long-time neoconservative propaganda operative who once worked for the U.S. Information Agency's (USIA) Bureau of Information to counter Soviet and other disinformation with his own Brand X of American disinformation. Raivio reports that Leventhal was part of the Bush administration's effort to convince the world that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction {WMD) ... It should not have come as any surprise that I was singled out by Leventhal for an attack over a story written for Online Journal about the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and the involvement in the assassination's planning of two neoconservative Bush administration officials — namely, Deputy National Security Advisor Elliot Abrams and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl C. Rove — with whom Leventhal is ideologically aligned."

Lies Within Lies. Michael Chabon's own private Holocaust,
by Paul Maliszewski, Bookforum, Apr/May 2005
"I imagine," [Michael] Chabon told his audiences in Fairfax and Washington, DC, "there may be some of you who remember the name Joseph Adler. You may have read his memoir, The Book of Hell, which I still see from time to time in used bookstores, its black jacket tattered or missing." The book ("well-written"
and "fairly brutal," Chabon pronounced it) describes Adler's two years at Theresienstadt, or Terezín, in Czechoslovakia. Chabon said he wondered whether audience members who lived in the area around that time recalled "the scandal that followed the book's publication." Adler, it seemed, was not who he said he was. A woman who stumbled across The Book of Hell in the public library had recognized the man in the author photo as Viktor Fischer, the Nazi journalist who eventually succeeded "the notorious propagandist Julius Streicher." Streicher had been one of Hitler's early followers and the editor and publisher of Der Stürmer, a weekly newspaper filled with anti-Semitic slurs; both he and Fischer were responsible for having published glowing accounts of the living conditions in Nazi-run concentration camps. The Washington Post called Adler "the liar who got lost in his lie," the Wiesenthal Center had then taken an interest, and Adler, who at first vigorously denied the woman's charges, had eventually come forward with the truth. He was Fischer, and after the war he had wandered the Czech countryside, "penniless and starving." Chabon, in his lecture, says that after the war had ended Fischer was set upon "by a roving gang of Jews, bent on murderous revenge," but was saved "through the kind intercession of a Jewish girl, herself a survivor." Fischer — or Adler or Colby, call him what you will—then married her, and together they emigrated to the United States. Whenever required, Fischer had presented the passport and paperwork of a dead Jew named Joseph Adler, and on entering the New World he had assumed this new identity in full. The Book of Hell had been but the last, most dramatic act in his lifelong deception, an attempt to imagine a fake past to complement his fake papers. His wife aided and abetted him throughout his charade. Her "numerical tattoo had served as the model," Chabon said, "for the one which she herself had pricked into his arm with a sewing needle." In a July phone interview, Chabon said that he's noticed audience members nodding their heads as he reveals Adler's deception: They recognize the story; they've heard it before, they think. Chabon's mention of Adler's homemade tattoo, at the lectures I attended, drew gasps from the audiences. In Fairfax, a woman seated a couple of rows in front of me turned to her friend and said, "That's sick." The lecture, which had bounded from light episode of childhood mischief to light episode of childhood curiosity, getting laughs throughout, had turned serious. The audience was rapt. The only problem was, the personal story Chabon was telling, while he may have presented it as an authentic portrait of the artist, just wasn't true. There was no Adler; and no Fischer either, for that matter. Nor does there exist a Holocaust memoir called The Book of Hell, nor an investigation by the Washington Post. There is a young-adult book titled Strangely Enough!, which is pretty much as Chabon describes it; and it is written by a man named Colby — though he wasn't, it must be said, a Nazi journalist who disguised himself as a Jewish survivor and holed up in the Maryland suburbs, but rather a real author, based in New York City and residing in Westchester County, who served in the US Air Force Auxiliary after World War II ..."

Mix snail porridge, sardine sorbet and you have a Fat Duck
UK village restaurant voted best in world
,
by Richard Jinman, The Guardian, Tuesday April 19, 2005
"The Fat Duck, the pioneering British restaurant that introduced the world to delicacies such as sardine on toast sorbet and bacon and egg ice cream, has been declared the world's best place to eat. Chef Heston Blumenthal's restaurant in the Berkshire village of Bray topped a list of the world's 50 best restaurants which was unveiled in London last night. Fourteen British restaurants were included on the list chosen by a panel of more than 600 chefs, food critics and restaurateurs, who considered culinary excellence, service and the overall dining experience ... Mr Blumenthal, whose scientific approach to creating new flavours has seen him dubbed the guru of "molecular gastronomy", said the Top 50 was a true reflection of an "incredibly exciting" UK restaurant scene ... Mr Blumenthal, who writes for the Guardian, said his bizarre-sounding dishes such as snail porridge, were part of The Fat Duck's bid to create food that was both delicious and fun. "It's a complete package of enjoyment I'm after," he said. "If I've discovered something new and get a sense of excitement about it, I want to pass it on to the customer in the dining room. It's like when you see an incredible view or drink a great bottle of wine - the experience is heightened if you share it with someone else."

[The only dangerous modern-day "Nazis" we see from here are emanating from Israel and the Jewish Lobby.]
Wiesenthal Center: Some states in Europe hampering Nazi hunt,
Haartez (Israel), April 18, 2005
"A final push to bring to justice those who carried out the Nazi Holocaust of the Jews has met resistance from central Europeans not ready to face up to crimes from 60 years ago, the Simon Wiesenthal Center. The Center said on Monday its "Operation Last Chance" campaign to catch the few war criminals still alive has received the names of 364 suspects and submitted 79 to prosecutors' offices since its launch in 2002. The group's chief Nazi hunter Efraim Zuroff said many central European politicians were reluctant to pursue Nazi criminals, for fear of challenging the notion their countrymen were the victims, not perpetrators, of war crimes. "We could have been much more successful," Zuroff said. "(But) it's politically unpopular to show just how much the local population participated in murder." The Center's scheme offers up to 10,000 euros for information leading to arrests or convictions of people who perpetrated the Holocaust. Zuroff, whose Nazi-hunting campaign spans from Germany to the Balkans and former Soviet countries, said he encountered most difficulties in the Baltic states, Romania and Austria."

[Left-wing or right-wing, Jewish totalitarisn fascism is everywhere. But a few noble people like Gilad Atzmon and Israel Shamir are unzipping the Jewish handcuffs that have been secured upon them and are emerging as decent human beings from the entrails of the Monster.]
The Protocols of the Elders Of London,
a document compiled by Gilad Atzmon
"Introduction In a very small segregated cyber shtetl somewhere in the north west side of yahoo (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/justpeaceuk/ ), a tiny cell of so-called ‘liberal’ Jews meets in the wee small hours. Night after night they are trying to save the Palestinian people from those who devote their lives to the Palestinian cause. There is one man who they really detest, his name is Israel Shamir (http://www.israelshamir.net/). An ex Jew, Shamir is a very civil and peaceful man and probably is the sharpest critical voice of ‘Jewish power’ and Zionist ideology. Among Israel Shamir’s many sins, he is a member in the Board of Advisors of DYR (Deir Yassin Remembered, an organisation founded with the purpose of commemorating the victims of the Deir Yassin massacre). DYR is engaged in
promoting reconciliation between Arabs and Jews. The liberal Zionist cell, as we are going to read, cannot really take it. They demand the cleansing of Shamir. They insist upon ruining his intellectual career or at the very least, his reputation. They would use any possible manipulative strategy to have him thrown out of DYR, which is the first step towards sending him beyond the pale. The following extracts are available on-line (for the time being) at Just Peace UK’s official cyber shtetl:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/justpeaceuk/. The extracts reveal a horrifying image of modern Jewish secular intolerance. It is a glimpse into the abusive, assertive and violent world of Zionist lobbying. It is a glance into the milieu of the people who try to determine the correctness of other people’s world views. When reading these extracts, just bear in mind that the authors behind them regard themselves as the forefront of Jewish moral thinking and universal humanism. Let’s let them introduce themselves We shall start with what is the authentic voice of the Marxist Tony Greenstein. Greenstein suggests that “anti-Zionist Jews, maybe under the banner of Return or JAZ, should sign an open letter to the PLO/PSC etc. insisting that they categorically repudiate Shamir and all his works and calling on Deir Yassin Remembered to break its links. What is important is that those Jews who sign are seen, without any qualification or equivocation, to be opposed to Zionism root and branch AND opposed to Shamir”. (Tony Greenstein)
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JustPeaceUK/message/15068 Reading those lines by Greenstein, I wonder whether I am allowed to guess that ‘anti-Zionist Jews’ are basically a bunch of ‘Just Peace UK’ (a left Zionist group). If this is the case we should never take JAZ seriously again. If this is the case, Jews Against Zionism are operating as undercover Zionist agents. If true, and I still suspect it, it is very disappointing but not really surprising. Orna Neumann doesn’t like Shamir either, but unlike Greenstein who pleas for the help of his brothers, Neumann expects the Arab world to fight her Zionist wars. Neumann stresses that they (the cyber shtetl Just Peace UK) should “ask the Arab Media Watch and Affif and the PSC (Palestinian Solidarity Campaign) to denounce him (Shamir)”. (Orna Neumann) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JustPeaceUK/message/15063 I may get it wrong here but when she mentions ‘Afiff’ she is probably referring to none other than Afiff Safieh, the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK. The fact that Neumann uses informal language calling Ambassador Safieh by his first name is in itself slightly unusual. Is Ambassador Safieh her close friend? Is he an active member in this Liberal Zionist cell? I am sure he isn’t. For those who don’t know, Afiff Safieh is the supreme Palestinian diplomatic representative to the UK. It seems as if Elder Neumann is trying to portray an image as if some informal trading is possible with the ambassador. As if the ambassador is a Zionist collaborator. Having had the honour of watching Ambassador Safieh speak on behalf of the Palestinian people, having seen him and his wife sitting in front row seats at the DYR event. I am pretty confident that Neumann was searching for support in the very wrong place. Roland Rance, a revolutionary socialist and an alleged devoted peace lover isn’t far better. Like Neumann, Rance refers to the ambassador, applying similar informal language, but then, unlike Neumann, Rance doesn’t ask Ambassador Safieh to intervene, he gives him orders. See for yourself: ”So we should not ask people like Afif and PSC to denounce Shamir because of his anti-Jewish rantings; we should insist that they join us in rejecting his whole approach as an obstacle to any progressive political strategy”.
(Roland Rance) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JustPeaceUK/message/15062
Sometimes I ask myself what Rance and his elder friends mean when they say
‘progressive political strategy’, Surely they mean silencing the voices of their political and ideological foes. I find myself wondering what is so progressive about silencing other people?
Apparently, some of the cell member are slightly more intellectually developed than others. For instance, Stephen Marks, is no doubt a strategically concerned one: ”I think” he maintains, that “the approach should come from a broad range of people, so Shamir cannot muddy the waters by claiming it is 'the jews' who are after him. The fact is that the zionists have been 'crying wolf' over anti semitism for so long that some people who have not read his material will be vulnerable to the argument that attacks on him are simply a reprise of the old Zionist chorus”. (Stephen Marks)
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JustPeaceUK/message/15064 Marks confesses here that Shamir is an internal Jewish problem but he insists upon finding a way to present Shamir as a threat to the world. But let us confront some facts here. It is the ‘liberal’ Jews who attack Shamir. Admittedly those left Jews are quoting two Palestinian writers (Ali Abunimah and Hussein Ibish) who denounced Shamir a while ago and yet I have never come across an orchestrated Palestinian campaign against Shamir. If anything, it is the other way around. Shamir is repeatedly praised by Palestinians and many of their supporters. From time to time you may come across an eloquent critique of Shamir’s ideas. At other times, he is considered as an opinionist and treated as such. If anything, it proves beyond doubt that the Palestinian solidarity campaign expands and becomes more and more colourful. This is probably something that we miss in the protocols of the Elders of London. When I was collecting these extracts I found out that not ‘many’ Palestinians are engaged in any dialogue within their cyber shtetl. If to be accurate, as a matter of fact I didn’t find a single Arab that might hypothetically save their honour ... Facing the apocalyptic aspects of the ensuing catastrophe, Orna Neumann is already getting ready for the worst case scenario:
“Has anyone seen his publication the flowers of the Galillee (Shamir’s book)?” she asks and then continues, “Hitler also started from words....”. For Neumann Shamir is the new Hitler, he is no longer just an ordinary anti Semite. He is now just about to liquidate the entire Jewish people. Ask yourself why? Like Hitler, Shamir wrote a book. Undoubtedly, she puts her very strong logical skills to the service of the cause; let me tell you, dear Neumann, not only did he write a book (more than one), he has a small moustache. London Underground Confronting a clear defeat, Queen Maccoby and Goyim-expert Robinson have realised that the smear campaign was found to be counter effective; they have decided to go under. “Just Peace UK list is at the end” Maccoby wrote “with all our messages on it (including this one!) Which means we should continue these discussions
off line”. (Deborah Maccoby) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JustPeaceUK/message/15080
If this coded message isn’t clear enough, Robinson is here to help: ”Deborah, you have a good point about continuing the discussion, but how? One way is to establish a small email group -- I suppose to join such a group needs a central person to co-ordinate e-addresses - yourself??
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JustPeaceUK/message/15083 As we can clearly see, the liberal Jews of North West Yahoo are withdrawing back to the ghetto practicing their old exclusive tactics. May I suggest something? What about the Israeli embassy in London, surely, they must have a secure concealed room, they would be happy to help you all. This is exactly what they are there for."

Pro-Israel Lobby Girding For Tough Battle on Aid. Up to $1.6B Sought for Gaza Pullout,
By Ori Nir, Forward, April 16, 2005
"Pro-Israel forces here are gearing up for a possible uphill fight to secure additional American aid to help cover the costs of Jerusalem's disengagement plan. The government of Prime Minister Sharon is asking the Bush administration for two separate aid packages totaling up to $1.6 billion to help defray the costs of the planned Israeli pullout from Gaza and the northern West Bank. First, Israeli officials predict, Jerusalem could end up asking for as much as $600 million to help relocate military installations in Gaza. The second request, which is expected to be larger and more controversial, has not been formally submitted, but was thoroughly discussed Monday during Sharon's visit to President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. According to Israeli sources, this second package would seek as much as $1 billion to help develop areas in the Negev and the Galilee, where Sharon's government is encouraging the evacuated Gaza and West Bank settlers to resettle. The aid would be in addition to the more than $2.6 billion in American assistance that Israel receives annually."

Another Bronfman Makes His Mark,
By NATHANIEL POPPER, Forward, April 15, 2005
"Adam Bronfman is not the only Bronfman busy making a name for himself these days. In the past three months, Adam's older brother, Matthew, has acquired two major Israeli businesses, joined the leadership of the World Jewish Congress and gotten married. The biggest headlines have been grabbed by Matthew's successful bid for the Israeli franchise of the furniture store Ikea and his purchase of a 26% stake in Israel Discount Bank, Israel's third largest bank, which was being sold as part of the Israeli government's privatization plans. Matthew teamed up with an ultra-Orthodox partner, Shalom Fischer, to buy the 75% share in Ikea's Israeli franchise for $37 million — a deal that closed in late March. Currently there is one Ikea in Israel, with more on the way. For the stake in Discount Bank, he led a group that paid $300 million in January. According to the Israeli newspaper Globes, the Bronfman stake in Discount Bank is jointly owned by Matthew, Adam, their sister Holly and their father, Edgar Bronfman Sr."

[More veiled Judeocentric propaganda. The avidly Zionist Asper family having a "human rights museum" is like cancer holding a party for health. Izzy Asper praised far-right Zionist fascist Jabotinsky, for God's sake!]
Controversial Canadian Museum Moving Forward,
By SHELDON GORDON, Forward, April 15, 2005
"After months of delays, the family of Israel "Izzy" Asper say they are close to fulfilling the late media baron and Jewish communal leader's dream of building the world's largest human rights museum here in his hometown. Asper family confidants say they are close to securing much-needed federal funding for the museum. But the project continues to face opposition from a coalition of ethnic groups that insist the proposed museum will be overly focused on Jewish suffering. Asper conceived of the $160-million Canadian Museum for Human Rights as an international icon and tourist attraction. He anticipated an official opening on Canada Day 2008 that would be attended by Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela and the descendants of Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas K. Gandhi. The project was to be financed by a combination of public money and private donations. A few weeks after Asper's sudden death in October 2003 at age 71, his widow, along with his two sons and his daughter, gathered for a sod-turning ceremony at the museum's proposed site, at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in Manitoba — known as "The Forks" — in this prairie city. The family's Asper Foundation announced that the federal government had committed $24 million. Shortly afterward, though, a squabble erupted when Asper's daughter,
Gail, the foundation's managing director, claimed that former prime minister Jean Chretien had promised her father a few days before his death that the government would contribute a total of $80 million, half the capital cost of the project. Paul Martin, who succeeded Chretien in December 2003, said that no written commitment had been made. One of his ministers went so far as to say that the Asper family had invented the additional sum. Although private fund raising has continued, the stalemate with the Canadian government has stalled the project for the past year. Now the Aspers appear confident that the federal funding is about to materialize. Later this month, their foundation is set to announce the project's architect, chosen through a global competition. Gail Asper, did not respond to the Forward's request for an interview. But family friend Sam Katz, Winnipeg's first Jewish mayor, said, "We've been receiving some very positive comments from [the federal government]. We hope to hear something [definite] within a month or 60 days." The biggest challenge to federal funds comes from Canadians for a Genocide Museum, a coalition of 33 ethnic groups. The group has written to Canadian lawmakers, insisting that public money not be allocated to the Asper project. CGM executive secretary James Kafieh said that the museum doesn't meet the coalition's conditions of "inclusivity and equity," because it gives priority to commemorating the Holocaust. "Look at their Web site and their promotional material." The coalition has shown it has political clout in Canada's multicultural society. A few years ago, its lobbying forced the government to back away from the idea of a federally funded, stand-alone Holocaust museum advocated by the Canadian Jewish Congress. "When you single out any group's suffering, you create a hierarchy of human suffering," Kafieh said. "We think that is likely to foster racism instead of human rights." ... Anita Neville, a Jewish member of parliament from Winnipeg, said that she, too, was hopeful for a positive outcome."

[Potential popes! Go to the Jews for your direction papers. Always, "What's good for the Jews?" Better to wonder what's crummy for them. We vote that the next pope breaks rank and makes a distinction between being a Catholic and someone who fawningly accommodates Jewish/Zionist demands and neurosis. Catholicism is dying on the vine. Why? At least in part because it diffuses itself so broadly in trying to make everyone else happy that it means very little any more, except as a runner for world Jewish aggrandizement. How about the guts to join the Presbyterians in an Israeli divestment action? But that's a religion with spine.]
Jews anxiously await new pope,
By SAM SER, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, April 17, 2005
"Upon the announcement of the next pope, will Jews say "amen" or "oy vey"? When the election process of the papal conclave gets under way on Monday, 115 cardinals will have to choose from among their ranks one of several leading figures – men of divergent views, some who would appear likely to follow the course of John Paul II's special relationship with the Jewish people, and some who could threaten that relationship. On one side are men such as Dionigi Tettamanzi, archbishop of Milan, who was a guest of honor at a Chabad succa in Milan last year; and Christoph Schoenborn, archbishop of Vienna, whose theological view of Jews and their claim to the Holy Land is highly supportive. No cardinal is suspected of harboring anti-Semitic views, or of threatening to undermine John Paul II's revolutionary work in Jewish-Catholic relations. Nonetheless, the election of Jean-Marie Lustiger, a French Jewish Holocaust survivor who converted as a teenager, would undoubtedly be a painful event for the Jewish community ... Then there are candidates such as Claudio Hummes of Brazil, who straddles that line. On one hand, Hummes has been a staunch supporter
of Jews
and the church's relations with Jews. "Hummes is very close to the Jewish community in Brazil. We have a great comfort level with him," said Israel Singer, chairman of the World Jewish Congress and cochair of the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations. At a recent conference of more than 30 cardinals in New York with Singer and other Jewish leaders, Hummes described the declaration of Jewish chosenness in Nostra Aetate as a personal inspiration ... Similar to Hummes – but hardly considered close to Jews – is Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras. "Let's say that the Palestinians would get sympathy from someone of his background," said Rabbi David Rosen, the international director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee. Add Colombian-born Dario Castrillon Hoyos, who pooh-poohed charges that Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ was anti-Semitic, and the picture of Latin American cardinals looks discouraging – especially since Latin America holds the highest number of Catholics in the world. "The further away they are from Jewish centers," said Rosen, "the lower their priority for Jewish relations."

[JTR contributor's note: "A good article, but no comment on the disproportionate number of Jews among journalists and editors. Apparently 'the lobby' just magically convinces media managers to tow the line almost 100%. Wow, what a 'lobby.'"]
Press Supports Caterpillar in Sales to Israel,
by Dane Baker, Bewildered Herd, April 14, 2005
"Press accounts in support of poor Caterpillar, ranked #57 in the Fortune 1,000 corporate index with 2004 revenues of some $30 billion, and Israeli policies in general are limited to second-tier intellectual press, mainly the Los Angeles Times and Boston Globe. The trouble centers around Rachel Corrie, a college student crushed to death by a Caterpillar-made, IDF-operated bulldozer in March of 2003 in the Rafah refugee camp, where she had traveled to protest razings. With Corrie’s death ruled an accident by Israeli officials and the three soldiers involved absolved by an Israeli military prosecutor, her family has sued Caterpillar, characterized by the LA Times as a “legal attack” against the company in an otherwise fairly straightforward March 20 account spelling out the allegations. The Corries' attorney, Jennie Green, is quoted as saying “Caterpillar purposefully turns a blind eye as to how their products are used” while a three-sentence Caterpillar statement follows, noting the company “shares the world’s concern over unrest in the Middle East” without a hint as to their culpability in such concerns, but unfortunately has “neither the legal right nor the means to police individual use of the equipment” they sell. Perhaps forgotten is a Human Rights Watch report published last November that refutes Caterpillar’s “head-in-the-sand” statement, which “ignores international standards on corporate social responsibility and the requirements of Caterpillar’s own code of conduct." .... Also ignored are the contents of a State Department report, repeated in a letter to the Corrie family by then-Secretary of State Colin Powell’s Chief of Staff, which noted the lack of a “thorough, credible and transparent” investigation by Israeli authorities. The only mention I’ve found of the statement among U.S. press is in an apologist editorial appearing in the March 18th edition of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, in which Robert Jamieson Jr. contends that Caterpillar is “free to do business with whomever it chooses” yet bothering to learn how its products are used and prevent it might be “admirable” from a “moral perspective” because it’s “smart public relations.” In defending Caterpillar, Jamieson Jr. says “the real terrorist in Rachel’s death” was the IDF soldier at the bulldozer controls, a shockingly unusual admission rarely found in the U.S. press but understandable since it was written in defense of the almighty corporation, which is to be absolved of any responsibilities and concerns according to American cultural beliefs. Not content to simply report Caterpillar’s profiteering at Palestinian expense, doctrine requires support for the occupation itself, dutifully provided by LA Times editors in article published yesterday. Teresa Watanabe reports on a Caterpillar stockholder resolution protesting sales to Israel and lead by “four Roman Catholic orders of nuns” and the California group Jewish Voices for Peace. Lest you think Jewish and Roman Catholic support for Palestinian liberation is widespread, Watanabe quickly cites "several" Jewish organizations that are leading a “counter-campaign” against the resolution, saying it is “part of a broader movement that unfairly singles out” the occupier Israel “without holding Palestinians accountable for terrorism and other actions that have stymied the peace process." Statements like this have become the standard method of dealing with criticism for Israeli policies, serving to draw attention away from specific allegations with warnings of racist conspiracies against Jews. But in case you didn’t get the picture, LA Times editors spell it out several paragraphs later, artfully turning a lawsuit against Caterpillar into “divestment from Israel” at large, “rekindling a siege mentality and fears of anti-Semitism” during this “time of some progress in peacemaking”, followed by a statement noting “blatant bias against Israel” from a American Jewish Congress official. Boston Globe editors join the chorus in a March 24 report, taking special care to include multiple statements from Israeli officials, who provide the standard line about destroying Palestinian homes as a way to “combat terrorism”, used to “target terror” and “not innocent civilians”, reported without noting such an easily refutable façade or any evidence, let alone quotes from any number of available groups who might refute the standard official line. The Globe cites a Consulate General spokeswoman’s comment that in the face of a halt to razings, continuing to protest “proves that these activists are merely opposing Israel’s policies out of habit and vendetta”, presumably an implication of racism against Jews, joining the common refrain in such matters and offered without comment here. Paragraphs later we learn that although razings have officially stopped, “Israel deems that other conditions, including illegal building, nonownership of land, and criminal reasons, could warrant the demolition of a house.” The implications being what they are, we’re left with a distinct impression that Israel does what it likes in the Occupied Territories, and anyone who dares to protest such activities are naturally anti-Semites, and should be dismissed with repugnance. The disregard for Palestinian life is palpable as LA Times and Globe editors lend support, apologist if not fully complicit, to the brutal and illegal Israeli domination of Palestine, using bitterly ironic phrases like “siege mentality” to describe not Israeli occupation policies but the supposed harsh treatment of Jews in this matter. And where, one wonders, are the concerns of “anti-Arabism” in press accounts? I doubt such a phrase even exists among the U.S. press, who prefer to grimly note the “rekindled” hatred of Jews while ignoring daily accounts, widely reported in Israeli press and other sources, of Palestinian death and destruction at the hands of Israeli occupiers. It’s interesting to note that media attempts to support Caterpillar complicity has been successful so far—company shareholders overwhelmingly voted down a proposal today (97 percent opposed) to simply review the company’s sales of bulldozers to Israel, another notable win for the corporate/state community."

Lucian Freud: The eyes of the world,
By Richard Cork, Independent (UK), 16 April 2005
"As a boy, Lucian Freud experienced a sudden, irreversible uprooting. Determined to escape the Nazis in 1933, his family moved to London from his native Berlin. And even now, more than 70 years later, his paintings still seem to reflect this childhood sense of dislocation. The people he depicts never occupy surroundings they can call their own. Uprooting them from a domestic context, he transplants his sitters to a bare room somewhere in the metropolis. Here, among dilapidated furniture, unruly plants, paint-encrusted walls and a remorselessly expanding heap of smeared rags, they submit themselves to his prolonged, uncompromising gaze. Once he has settled on the object of his scrutiny, nothing deflects him from investigating it with the zealous curiosity of a detective. Freud's latest canvas, now on show at the National Portrait Gallery, is no exceptio ... Like his grandfather Sigmund before him, Lucian invites men, women and children to enter his sanctum. Many of the figures he has painted are seated or stretched out, and seem to be absorbed in private thoughts. But there is nothing relaxed about these reclining dreamers. They still appear tense and expectant, uneasily aware of the observer who tries so tirelessly to define their essential isolation. Unlike his grandfather, though, Freud refuses to stay within the prescribed limits of a psychoanalyst's session. Sigmund would never have encouraged his patients to strip off and expose their blanched, defenceless flesh. Nor would he have positioned them in such bleak rooms, unalleviated by the rugs, drapes and rows of companionable statuettes which lined his consulting rooms in Vienna and London alike. There is no suggestion that the people in Freud's paintings suffer from the mental turmoil afflicting his grandfather's clients. But they are far from blithe.
Nobody smiles. The children who make rare appearances in his work end up as sombre as the adults. Sometimes, figures shield their faces with arms or hands, in an apparent attempt to hide some vestige of themselves from the painter's avid stare. Most of them, though, accept the inevitability of exposure. Because they have often posed for him before, they know that Freud will subject their flesh to an almost clinical examination. And he sees them, above all, as solitary. Nothing can deflect him from a constant desire to explore their underlying loneliness ... Although his pictures of women are invariably described by some commentators as "ugly", Freud himself certainly finds them anything but. In addition to his two marriages, he has had well-documented relationships with some of his models, not to mention acknowledged children, whose portraits he has painted and exhibited. For example, there is his Reflection with Two Children (Self-Portrait) 1965, that depicts him with his daughter and son, Rose and Ali Boyt. It is true that his women's bodies can match the ungainliness of the worn-out, bursting furniture where they rest their weight. But it is too often forgotten that, in Freud's later work at least, men are treated with an equal amount of directness. In one arresting canvas, a male nude lies on a bed with his hand over his eyes. A black sock, trailing from the tip of his foot, echoes the curve of his rawly exposed penis. There is a keen and amused awareness, here, of how absurd a man's body can look when caught off-guard and unable to muster any conventional dignity. But Freud's detractors persist in censuring him for portraying women in submissive poses, and supposedly reserving all the lordly stances for his male sitters."

Well, when you consider the nature of 'the system' and who it is designed to 'work for,' then yes, 'the system worked' Ms. Ballard real good. Judge Sentences Woman Accused Of Making Anti-Semitic Comments
, WFTV, April 14, 2005
"An Orange County judge handed down an unusual sentence for a woman accused of yelling anti-Semitic comments at her Jewish neighbor. Geraldine Ballard wasn't charged with a crime. What happened in court Thursday will not show up on her record unless she violates the conditions of her probation. Orange County judge Mike Murphy handled the sensitive case by drafting a creative sentence for Ballard. Ballard is accused of threatening Lisa Green and her children by shouting derogatory remarks at them as they walked in front of her property on their way to the Jewish Community Center in Maitland. "I truly have to say, the system worked, it really worked," said Green. The judge sentenced Ballard to 180 days of probation with the condition she either serve 50 hours of community service or visit one of three holocaust museums in Washington DC, St. Petersburg or the Jewish Community Center located in her own neighborhood. Ballard has denied the accusations against her all along and Thursday she refused to talk about the conditions of her probation. Ballard must also undergo a mental health evaluation. If she fails to comply, she'll be back in court where she could be criminally charged. Ballard will have to pay $250 in court costs and she cannot have any contact with Green and her family."

Hollywood could face suit over synagogue,
by Robert Nolin, Sun-Sentinel, April 15, 2005
"The U.S. Department of Justice has completed an 18-month investigation and determined it will sue if the city doesn't allow the Chabad Lubavitch synagogue to continue operating in a residential neighborhood. Unless the city settles with the synagogue, the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division will charge it with "implementing a land use regulation in a manner that discriminated, and continues to discriminate, against the Hollywood Community Synagogue," federal attorneys said in a letter dated Wednesday. Under the settlement the government proposed, Hollywood [Florida] would allow the synagogue to continue to operate, promise not to violate its rights again, and report back periodically to the Department of Justice on its status. The city has until April 25 to decide whether to accept the demands or defend against the expected lawsuit. City attorney Dan Abbott will seek direction from the City Commission in a closed-door session on Wednesday. "I'm going to schedule a session to see if these actions change the commission's attitude toward the Chabad," Abbott said. "I'm going to see what my bosses have to say." The Justice Department's suit, if filed, would charge the city with violating measures of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000, which says that religious entities cannot be treated "on less than equal terms" with nonreligious institutions. Since 2001, the city has refused to grant a special zoning exception allowing the Chabad to hold services at two homes on 46th Avenue, just south of Sheridan Street in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood. The area is zoned for residential only, there is insufficient parking in the area and the synagogue's congregation disturbs neighboring residents, the city said. The synagogue has been holding services while the issue winds through the courts. Chabad President Arthur Eckstein said typical Friday evening services draw about 50 to 60 worshipers, but only a half-dozen cars because the Orthodox congregation traditionally walks to the synagogue. Franklin Zemel, the Fort Lauderdale lawyer representing the synagogue, said the findings buttress the Chabad's discrimination allegations." [What a joke! And a sinister one. Defending Chabad in a "discrimination" case is preposterous, when "discrimination" is the foundation of the Chabad's belief system. That they win a "special exception" to take over a neighborhood to sanctify themselves as the Chosen People is beyond belief.]

Jewish community emerges from hiding in Portugal after 500 years,
Yahoo! News, April 15, 2005
"More than five centuries after the start of the Inquisition, a small Jewish community in a northern mountain town in Portugal is slowly emerging from years of secret observance of its faith. The 180 Jews who live in Belmonte, a town of granite-walled houses of 3,500 people less than 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the Spanish border, opened a new synagogue -- the first since the 15th century -- eight years ago. Last week the community, which only began producing kosher wine and olive oil in 2004, formed an association of kosher food producers, yet the town's Jews are still reserved when questioned about their religion by outsiders. "The Inquisition ended but the fear stayed behind," the vice-president of the community, Jose Henriques, said as he stood by a synagogue window which provides a sweeping view of the surrounding mountains ... Some historians estimate that 20 percent of Portugal's population, or 200,000 people, were Jewish before the start of the Inquisition. Many were successful traders and scientists, and such was the visibility of Portugal's Jews in international markets that the term "Portuguese" was synonymous with "Jews" at the time ... Throughout the years Jews in Belmonte married mostly among themselves and they found ways to carry out their rituals in hiding ... In recent years the restoration of Jewish practices has enjoyed the support of local officials, who are keen to protect the heritage of the town as well as develop the tourist potential of the Jewish presence in the region. The local tourist office offers maps with suggested itineraries that highlight Jewish points of interest in the region and on Sunday the mayor of Belmonte will officially open a new museum dedicated to the history of Judaism in the town. The three-story museum, which cost over one million euros (1.3 million dollars), is the first in Portugal dedicated to Jewish history."

U.S. Suspends Israel from Warplane Project - Paper,
Reuters, April 15, 2005
"The United States has suspended Israel from joint efforts to produce a new warplane, in protest at the Jewish state's defense dealings with China, an Israeli newspaper said on Thursday citing U.S. sources. The Pentagon included Israel among foreign partners in developing the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) in 2003. Under the deal, Israel was promised first purchase of the advanced warplanes due out next decade, ahead of non-partner nations. But Maariv daily said Washington suspended Israel from the JSF project after alleging it had violated a U.S. export ban by upgrading China's fleet of Israeli-supplied Harpy attack drones. The United States, which gives Israel some $2.9 billion in aid annually, has opposed past Israeli arms sales to Beijing, citing concern that the technology could be used against its ally Taiwan in any conflict."

Ex-public housing official gets 6 years for sexual extortion,
By Zvi Harel, Haaretz (Israel), April 15, 2005
"The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court yesterday sentenced a former public housing official to six years in prison for sexually extorting seven women.
Judge Hanan Efrati handed the prison sentence down to Ya'akov Cohen, who directed the collections department of the Halamish public housing corporation in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Cohen was convicted of sexually assaulting seven female residents after promising them he would reduce or cancel rent payments they owed on their apartments. A number of the complainants were single mothers. The former official was convicted of seven separate counts of sexual extortion, sexual abuse and harassment as well as extorting NIS 10,000 from four residents of Halamish apartments who sought to reduce their payments ... Cohen would telephone some of the female tenants directly, put pressure on them, and request to visit them at home. One of the women, a single mother, said she acceded to Cohen's request to have sex, because she "was afraid they would throw me out of the apartment. Another woman said she agreed to have sex with Cohen in exchange for a reduction of her debt from NIS 3,000 to NIS 1,000."

Parliament raps state broadcasting for 'insulting' Iranian Jews,
Payvan (Iran), April 15, 2005
"Iran's Parliament Speaker Gholamali Haddad Adel [Jewish?] added voice Wednesday to a Jewish deputy's criticism of the state broadcasting for airing serials which he said were insulting the ancient diaspora in Iran, IRNA reported from Tehran. "Insulting Jews and attributing untrue materials to them in TV serials over the past 12 years have not only hurt the feelings of the Jews, but they have, one can say with conviction, led to the migration of a considerable percentage of them," Jewish MP Maurice Mo'tamed told the parliament session. Haddad Adel lent his weight to him, saying, "I noticed the same thing when the serials were being broadcast and I believe you are right. "I will notify the IRIB (Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting) to respect the rights of religious minorities in its programs." Iran is said to be housing the largest Jewish community in the Middle East outside Israel, with the diaspora currently numbering around 25,000 in the country. Mo'tamed, in his remarks, adverted to the founder of the Islamic Revolution late Imam Khomeini's support for the Jewish community in Iran. "We distinguish between the Jewish community and the Zionists; the Jewish community and other communities which live in Iran belong to this nation and Islam treats them in the same manner which it treats others," the MP quoted Imam Khomeini as saying once. Tehran does not recognize the state of Israel, maintaining its 'moral and political support' for freedom-seeking movements in the occupied territories. Some of the Iranian Jews have migrated to Israel to assume top posts, including Moshe Katsav who is the president of Israel."

Germany bans anti-Semitic paper, stirs uproar in Turkey,
Jersualem Post, April 12, 2005
"The debate on how to curb Islamic radicalism in Germany has been exacerbated by the recent banning of a Turkish newspaper in Germany for anti-Semitic and anti-Western propaganda. Turkish Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu, in a meeting with his German counterpart Otto Schily on Monday in Berlin, called the Anadoluda Vakit newspaper disgraceful for publishing the propaganda, but said no legal action could be taken against the paper in Turkey because no law exists to prosecute the owners. In February, Schily closed Yeni Akit GmbH, a publishing house headquartered in Moerfelden-Walldorf, Germany, that had been publishing the European edition of Vakit since December 2001. Schily accused the paper of spreading "systematic incitement of hatred and violence" against Jews, the State of Israel, and the Western social order in general. In explaining his decision, Schily said, "Under the cover of purportedly 'serious reporting,' Yeni Akit GmbH disseminated anti-Jewish and anti-Western propaganda. For a democracy that is willing to defend its values, it is unacceptable that an organization such as Yeni Akit GmbH should incite its Turkish-speaking readership in Germany through this kind of 'reporting' characterized by anti-Jewish and anti-Western propaganda." "Freedom of opinion and freedom of the press, which are guaranteed by our constitution, are values of outstanding importance; nevertheless, the ban is necessary and appropriate, given the repeated attacks against the human dignity of individual nationalities that were contained in Anadoluda Vakit articles." However, the Turkey edition of the paper, which continues to be published, has expressed its anger at the ban by comparing Schily to Hitler and declaring German politicians to be in the hands of the "Jewish lobby." "After Adolf Hitler, who wanted to create his own race and soaked the world in blood and fire, the German interior minister reintroduces these Hitler methods again and announces the ban of the newspaper Vakit without a court order." Oktay Eksi, the chairman of the Turkish Press Council (TPC) and a columnist with Hurriyet, the Turkish paper with the largest circulation, sharply criticized the ban for not being based on an official court decision. Schily explained that no court injunction has yet been issued owing to the long time necessary for such proceedings, but said he had the right and the duty to ban such publications. Legal proceedings against the paper, which has a circulation of about 10,000 in Germany and 60,000 in Turkey, started in December 2004, after Christian Democratic Union member of parliament Kristina Koehler quoted from a column in the paper in a Bundestag debate: "The truth is there was no Holocaust. The so-called gas chambers are a lie as well. All this is nothing but Zionist music." The column led to a wave of protest among parliament members participating in a debate in February on Islam. Koehler called for a criminal probe against the paper on the basis of the penal code under which the denial of the Holocaust in Germany is punishable by law. Soon afterwards, the Turkish paper released an article calling her a "pawn of the Zionists."

[Note that the Los Angeles Times uses the word "Jews," not "Zionists." When thus spoken by us mere mortals, that's routinely attacked as irrational "anti-Semitism." But following the Times' model, it logically follows: Don't boycott Israel, boycott Jews.]
Jews Target Caterpillar Shareholder Effort. Divesting stock because of Israeli bulldozing of Palestinian homes is unfair, some leaders say,
by Teresa Watanabe, Los Angeles Times, April 13, 2005
"Targeting a Caterpillar Inc. shareholder resolution set for a vote today, many California Jewish leaders are intensely mobilizing against efforts to use stock market pressure as a tool against Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. California Jews representing such organizations as the American Jewish Congress and StandWithUs plan to attend a meeting at Caterpillar Inc.'s corporate headquarters in Peoria, Ill., to speak out today against a shareholder resolution that would direct the firm to investigate the use of its bulldozers by the Israeli army to demolish Palestinian homes. The resolution, brought by four Roman Catholic orders of nuns and the Berkeley-based group Jewish Voices for Peace, says that Israel has used the bulldozers to destroy thousands of homes in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It asks for an investigation into whether such use conformed with the company's code of business conduct. Several Jewish organizations are leading a counter-campaign against the resolution, which they see as part of a broader movement that unfairly singles out Israel for economic pressure without holding Palestinians accountable for terrorism and other actions that have stymied the peace process. Although the Caterpillar resolution is not expected to pass, supporters hope to get at least 6% of the vote; that would allow them to reintroduce it next year and continue their advocacy against the demolition of Palestinian homes. Supporters of the shareholder resolution include two major Protestant denominations, the 3.6-million-member Presbyterian Church USA, and the 8.4-million-member United Methodist Church. Rallies to oppose the bulldozer sales were scheduled today in 40 U.S. cities, including San Francisco and Chicago, according to Liat Weingart, codirector of Jewish Voices for Peace. "From inside the company, we're saying this [use] is hurting Caterpillar's corporate image," she said. But Caterpillar spokesman Ben Cordani said the company's board of directors opposes the resolution because it is impossible to police the use of its equipment worldwide. In July, the Presbyterian Church USA became the first American mainline Protestant denomination to vote to begin a process of divestment from U.S. firms that support the occupation as a way, a spokesman said, to put teeth into its 30-year opposition to those Israeli policies. In recent months, the World Council of Churches has urged Christian churches to consider similar measures, and Episcopalians, Methodists and United Church of Christ members are among those discussing the issue. Stunned and anguished by the actions, many Jews say divestment from Israel would be counterproductive, rekindling a siege mentality and fears of anti-Semitism at a time of some progress in peacemaking between Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas.
"This is blatant bias against Israel and U.S. firms, and constitutes a political boycott against America's strongest ally and only democracy in the Mideast," said Allyson Rowen Taylor, associate director of the American Jewish Congress' Western regional office in Los Angeles. She said she paid $860 for 10 shares of Caterpillar stock so she could speak out against the shareholder resolution today; her organization also bought stock. StandWithUs, an international Israel advocacy and education organization based in Los Angeles, has urged the 40,000-plus supporters on its e-mail list to buy Caterpillar stock, write letters of support to the firm and invest in companies that do business with Israel. Other organizations — including the Union for Reform Judaism, the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and the Progressive Jewish Alliance — have issued briefing papers, started websites, written newspaper columns, and reached out to Christian churches to discuss divestment issues.
The federation, for instance, recently organized a visit to Israel with Rabbi Mark Diamond, executive director of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California, to give members of nine Christian and Jewish denominations a better understanding of the Mideast conflict. Many of the Jewish efforts were launched last summer after the Presbyterian Church's General Assembly voted, 431 to 62, to direct a church committee to examine the denomination's $8-billion stock portfolio to identify U.S. firms it thought supported the occupation through their product sales to Israel ... Caterpillar's sales to Israel also recently became the focus of a lawsuit filed by the parents of a young American activist crushed to death two years ago while trying to block the bulldozer demolition of a home in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. Besides suing the Israeli government in courts there, the parents of Rachel Corrie last month sued Caterpillar Inc. in a Seattle federal court, alleging the firm violated state and international law by selling specially designed bulldozers to the Israeli military, knowing they would be used to demolish homes and endanger civilians."

Former AIG Chief Gave Wife More Than $2 Billion of AIG Shares in Days Before Resigning Top Posts, SEC Filing Shows,
By Eileen Alt Powell, Tampa Tribune (Associaited Press), April 13, 2005
"The former chief of American International Group Inc.
transferred more than $2 billion worth of company shares to his wife as a gift only days before he was pressed by company directors to resign
, according to a regulatory filing. That disclosure by Maurice "Hank" Greenberg came Tuesday, hours after he declined to discuss a questionable insurance deal with state and federal regulators who are probing questionable transactions by AIG. Greenberg resigned as president and CEO of the New York-based insurer on March 14, three days after he had transferred 41.4 million shares - worth $2.2 billion at Tuesday's closing share price of $53.20 - to his wife, Corinne P. Greenberg. Greenberg directly held 1.95 million shares after the transfer, according to the filing Tuesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Greenberg also disclaimed ownership "and any pecuniary interest" in another 23.65 million AIG shares he held through C.V. Starr & Co. Inc., which controls AIG managers' compensation. Howard Opinsky, a spokesman for Greenberg's legal team, declined to comment on the filing. AIG spokesman Chris Winans said the company had no comment. Greenberg's substantial stock gift to his wife is sure to provoke the interest of regulators and lawyers in the case, because it appears to be an effort to shield assets, said Thomas Ajamie, a securities lawyer in Houston. "He anticipated that something serious was going to happen to him and he's trying to move assets to his wife," Ajamie said. "This large of a transfer, even in isolation, would garner regulatory scrutiny, but in the context of the criminal and civil issues, the warning bells are waking up people from here to China." At Tuesday's deposition, Greenberg invoked his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination in response to all questions during the 45 minute session, according to a person who attended the meeting but asked not to be identified by name ... Investigators are looking into a number of reinsurance transactions booked by New York-based AIG, one of the world's largest insurers. Reinsurance traditionally has been used to spread out risk among insurers but, in some cases, has been used for the questionable purpose of polishing a company's financial statements."

German ruling says Dresden was a holocaust
,
By Hannah Cleaver, Telegraph (UK), April 12, 2005
"German prosecutors have provoked outrage by ruling that the 1945 RAF bombing of Dresden can legally be termed a "holocaust". The decision follows the refusal by the Hamburg public prosecutor's office to press charges against a Right-wing politician who compared the bombing raids to "the extermination of the Jews". German law forbids the denial or playing down of the Holocaust as an incitement to hatred. So delicate is the subject of the slaughter of Jews under Hitler that any use of the word "holocaust", or comparison with it, faces intense scrutiny and sometimes legal action. But prosecutors have declined to pursue further the case of Udo Voigt, the chairman of the far-Right NPD, who likened the RAF's raids to the Nazis' "final solution". Rudigger Bagger, a spokesman for the Hamburg public prosecutor, said the decision took into account only the criminal, not the moral, aspects of the case. But he cited as a legal precedent a ruling by the federal constitutional court that favoured free speech in political exchanges, if defamation was not the prime aim of the argument ... Paul Spiegel, the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, criticised the decision by prosecutors not to take action. He said the statements were incitement and allowing them to stand opened the door to further such comments. "Morally, I have no understanding of this," he said. "One can ban such remarks if you use the law consistently. It is questionable whether statements that are clearly incitement come under freedom of expression." .... Attitudes towards the Allied bombing campaign, which killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, are changing. Estimates of the death toll in Dresden in February 1945 hover at about 35,000. All the same, some historians claim that as many as 500,000 people were killed in the raids."

Festering rivalry in Prague bursts into open with violence on Shabbat,
By Dinah Spritzer, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, April 12, 2005
"A long-simmering dispute in the Prague Jewish community over the leadership of one of the city’s most prestigious synagogues has resulted in a violent altercation and the shul’s temporary
closure. The rabbi of the famed Old-New Synagogue, Manis Barash, was conducting Shabbat services Saturday and was displeased to find that Karol Sidon, chief rabbi for the Czech Federation of Jewish Communities, was offered an aliyah to the Torah by the synagogues’s gabbai, according to observers. Barash, an American-born Chabad member, made his displeasure known, pointing out that he, not Sidon — who was fired as chief rabbi of Prague last summer — was the only person who should be conducting a Torah reading, gabbai Jakub Svab said. Soon the incident erupted into violence, leaving several people injured and at least one considering criminal charges. The background to the incident was laid last summer. The Prague community erupted in a furor when then-chairman Tomas Jelinek fired Sidon, claiming the rabbi was not performing his duties properly and had misplaced ceremonial objects ... On Saturday, however, the 30 or so worshippers who usually attended the High Synagogue turned up at the Old-New Synagogue with Sidon in tow. It seemed like an attempt to “take the synagogue back in some way. It was like the army had marched in,” said Rafael Ohana, an Israeli tour guide who has lived in Prague for five years and regularly attends Barash’s services. The dispute turned heated when Barash refused to allow Sidon to have an aliyah. Sidon told the congregation that they should move to the High Synagogue. Most of the worshippers left, witnesses say. Shortly after, violence broke out in the Old-New Synagogue’s entrance hall. A press release issued by the Prague Jewish Community, many of whose members opposed Sidon’s firing last summer, reported that six Barash supporters beat up two young worshippers ... But Ohana had a different version of events. Barash’s wife “wanted to come inside the synagogue. There was a Czech woman, a Sidon supporter, who told the guards, ‘Don’t let this lady in, she does not belong here,’ ” Ohana said. Upon hearing that, Ohana said, a Czech-Israeli woman, Tfila Yerucham, the 19-year-old sister of the synagogue’s cantor, responded, “Anyone is welcome here. What you are saying now is what the Nazis told my grandmother.” The Czech woman then told her boyfriend that Yerucham had called her a Nazi, Ohana continued. The boyfriend then “hit Tfila in the face a few times and she fell to the floor,” Ohana said. “He beat and kicked her.” Ohana’s version of events was reinforced by Yerucham’s father, who says the fight was laced with political undertones about control of the synagogue. Several Chabad House regulars entered the fight. “Everybody was fighting everybody. There might have been 20 people going at each other,” said Ohana, who said most of the fighters on the Chabad side were Israelis, not locals. “I am sorry for all of this,” said Ohana, “but the ones who got hurt were on the side that started it.”

Where Judaism and Rockefellerism join: Meet the Rockefeller-Growalds,
By Rachel Pomerance, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, April 13, 2005
"Wearing a plain navy suit and loafers, radiating a ruddy, unmade-up glow and enunciating each word with formality, she seems every bit a Rockefeller — with a twist. “We do do Shabbat on Fridays,” Eileen Rockefeller Growald says. “We do do shehechianus after the first tomatoes of the season,” she adds,
referring to the Jewish blessing over something new. The daughter of David Rockefeller long has rejected the strictures of religion. But in her marriage to Paul Growald, she has “expanded to Judaism,” as she likes to say. “I feel very blessed to have married Paul, and in a sense to have married into the richness of this culture,” she told several members of Jewish family foundations who gathered recently in Baltimore for the annual conference of the Jewish Funders Network ... In their immediate family, the Growalds have drawn on Jewish rituals. “I’ve really loved the ritual of Friday night Shabbat with our boys,” Growald Rockefeller says ... “Religion as a spiritual value in raising our children was a binding force in our marriage, and it continues to be,” Rockefeller Growald says. The family belongs to Ohavi Zedek Synagogue, the oldest and largest shul in Vermont ... Growald is on the board of the Rockefeller Family Fund, which doesn’t donate to religious causes. Rockefeller Growald is the founding chair of the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisers, which advises philanthropies throughout the world. Asked if her Jewish experience plays a role in her work, she says that she draws on the value of service, which “is common to both Judaism and
Rockefellerism.”

AJC Calls on Leaders to Denounce Anti-Semitic Comments,
U.S. Newswire, April 14, 2005
"The American Jewish Committee today called on Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) to denounce anti-Semitic remarks made by Lenora Fulani; to refrain from raising more funds for her enterprises; and to reject association with the Independence Party, over which Fulani has significant influence. Yesterday, Fulani, a longtime leader of a political cult, defended her claim that Jews "had to sell their souls to acquire Israel and are required to do the dirtiest work of capitalism - to function as mass murderers of people of color - in order to keep it." Not only did she assert that that comment was not anti- Semitic, she said that it raised "issues that I think need to be explored." Mayor Bloomberg and Rep. Rangel both appeared at a fundraiser for Fulani's All Stars Project, a youth-oriented program, on April 11. Sen. Schumer appeared at her 2004 fundraising event. AJC well recognizes that these leaders all have distinguished records of speaking out against bigotry, and considers them to be long-standing allies in the battle for human rights and against anti-Semitism. It is more in sorrow than in anger that AJC today finds itself calling upon these public officials to distance themselves from a figure with a long track record of anti- Semitism. Fulani is joined by her colleague Fred Newman in many years of anti-Semitic aspersions. Newman has accused Jews of being "stormtroopers of decadent capitalism." And they or their enterprises have, among other things, praised Abu Jihad, the PLO terrorist whose group killed 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, and Professor Griff, the rap artist who blamed Jews for "the majority of wickedness that goes on across the globe." Fulani also has blamed the United States for the horrid events of September 11, and their All Stars Project last year produced a play about Crown Heights that distorted the tragic events in order to promote an anti-Semitic story line. One of the prime responsibilities for public officials is to reject hatred and disassociate themselves from bigots, rather than support, condone, associate with, or raise money for their enterprises. We call on these leaders to act accordingly."

Jew remark triggers uproar,
The Star [Malyasia], April 12, 2005
"A PAS assemblyman’s remark that the Barisan Nasional state government was lebih teruk daripada Yahudi (worse than Jews) caused an uproar at the State Assembly. Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut (Wakaf Mempelam) made the remark while criticising the state government’s Islam Hadhari, Terengganu Bestari (Civilisational Islam, Smart Terengganu) slogan, noting that the houses of the poor were being demolished. “In reality, the state government is worse than Jews,” he said during the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address yesterday. Several assemblymen hit out at Mohd Abdul Wahid for the remark and urged him to withdraw it. PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang (PAS – Rhu Rendang) declined to comment (on the issue) when approached by newsmen during the break."

Painting-in-a-painting as Lucien Freud rolls out new self-portrait,
Yahoo! News, April 13, 2005
"The latest self-portrait of Lucien Freud goes on show in London, showing the celebrated painter with a nude model at his feet, working on a painting of a painting being painted. "The Painter is Surprised by a Naked Admirer" will be on public view at the National Portrait Gallery for three and a half weeks before it goes to the Museo Correr in Venice for a major Freud exhibition. "It's not like anything he's done before," said writer William Feaver, a friend of the octogenarian artist, quoted in The Guardian newspaper. "It's very much a picture of how he feels and is -- a picture of being 82." The Guardian's arts reporter described the work as "a painting of a mirror image of a painting being painted -- although in fact, Freud has also added another smudged easel in the painting-within-a-painting, making it a painting of a mirror image of a painting of a painting being painted".

Right-wing Jews Rally to Defense of Embattled DeLay,
By E.J. Kessler, Forward, April 15, 2005
"Even as embattled GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff was reported to have turned on House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, the Texas Republican's other right-wing Jewish allies are rallying to his defense. "DeLay is arguably the best friend Israel has in Congress," said Morton Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America, which adamantly opposes the creation of a Palestinian state. "He's not simply a guy who you go for help. He gets other guys to help. A guy like DeLay will call you [to ask] what can he do." Republican activist Jeff Ballabon, head of the conservative Center for Jewish Values, also came to the Republican leader's defense. "DeLay's concern for Jewish survival and his active friendship for Israel are deep and personal," Ballabon said. "They existed long
before the Oslo terror war and long before Jewish organizations or fundraisers ever discovered him. Those in the Jewish community who have come to appreciate the depth and magnitude of his friendship ought to stand with him now." A crack in DeLay's right-wing Jewish support appeared to emerge this
week, when Newsweek published a report citing an unnamed source
saying DeLay was being bad mouthed by Abramoff, a longtime political ally. According to the report, Abramoff told a confidant that DeLay "knew everything" about who had financed his ethically questionable trips abroad. An Abramoff spokesman denied the magazine report. DeLay, an Evangelical Christian who recently blocked Bush administration plans to provide direct aid to the Palestinian Authority, has been taking fire in the press from Democrats and even two Republicans lawmakers over three trips abroad that allegedly were paid for by lobbyists, which would have violated House ethics rules. At least two of the trips, a 1997 visit to Russia and a 2000 trip to England and Scotland, allegedly were financed by entities with links to Abramoff. A longtime friend and associate of DeLay, Abramoff raised hundreds of thousands for Delay's political causes and charities, and employed many former DeLay staffers in his lobbying operations. DeLay has denied knowing that any lobbyists funded the trips. He has said the trips were sponsored by a Washington-based conservative think tank, the National Center for Public Policy Research. Abramoff, an Orthodox Jew and vocal supporter of right-wing Israeli causes, served on the center's board. Jews have figured prominently in DeLay's defense -- both as advocates and whipping boys. In Congress, Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, an observant Jew who is the House Republicans' chief deputy majority whip, has been key in spearheading the GOP pushback on DeLay. The Republican strategy has been to blame DeLay's problems on the "liberal media" and the Hungarian-born Jewish billionaire financier George Soros. A Soros-funded left-leaning group, Campaign for America's Future, has been running ads drawing attention to DeLay's alleged ethical lapses ... Abramoff is being investigated by the FBI, the IRS, the Senate Indian Affairs Committee and a federal grand jury over alleged fraud and overcharges in $66 million in fees he was paid by Indian tribes involved in casino gambling. His problems have rocked his Maryland Jewish community, where he was famous for having started a short-lived Jewish day school, the Eshkol School, and the District of Columbia's only kosher deli, Stacks, also defunct. The school and an Abramoff-controlled foundation that supported its activities have figured in the Senate investigation of Abramoff's lobbying. An avatar of Jewish Republicanism, Abramoff frequently spoke out in favor of an alliance with evangelicals to support maximal Israeli positions. This week, Abramoff courted even more controversy. A story in the April 18 edition of Newsweek quotes an upset Abramoff railing at DeLay and his aides for maintaining that they did not know about Abramoff's role in financing the Republican lawmaker's trips. "Those SOBs," Newsweek quotes Abramoff as saying about DeLay and his staffers. "DeLay knew everything. He knew all the details." Newsweek sourced the remarks to an unnamed companion with whom Abramoff lunched last week. Abramoff, however, is denying the story."

An ugly fight over small change,
By Yair Sheleg, Haaretz (Israel), April 10, 2005
"Imperfect Justice: Looted Assets, Slave Labor and the Unfinished Business of World War II" by Stuart E. Eizenstat, Public Affairs, 400 pages, $30 [Hebrew translation by Idit Paz, Maariv, 364 pages]
As someone who has spent several years covering the negotiations on restitution payment for property that belonged to Jewish victims of the Holocaust, this book did for me what the memoirs of statesmen do for veteran political correspondents. It has given me a glimpse, at long last, of the goings-on behind the scenes... Stuart Eizenstat is indeed the best man to tell the story. He was the Clinton administration's top representative on Holocaust affairs throughout the president's eight years in office, and kept the job even when he was U.S. ambassador to the European Union, undersecretary of commerce, undersecretary of state and deputy secretary of the treasury. Not at all coincidentally, as we shall soon see, these were also the most successful years of the restitution campaign ... Many vested interests having nothing whatsoever to do with historic justice were involved in this international battle over billions. Eizenstat charts them all. Those who led the battle on the Jewish side, Edgar Bronfman and Israel Singer, leaders of the World Jewish Congress, took advantage of the recovery of Jewish assets to invest their organization with renewed importance. President Clinton's backing was largely due to his personal commitment to Bronfman, one of the Democratic Party's chief donors. Senator Alfonse D'Amato, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, who called for sanctions against the Swiss banks if they refused to pay their debt, did so as an election ploy. He was seeking another term as senator for New York, where a large percentage of the voters are Jews (in the end, another candidate won - also Jewish). As for the lawyers, it was clear what was in it for them. They took a public debate over a matter of principle and turned it into a series of private lawsuits (although this added to the pressure on the banks, insurance companies and relevant governments). They were motivated almost entirely by the huge sums they would rake in. For the record, most of these lawyers were Jewish. Eizenstat minces no words in his criticism of the conduct of the lawyers (with the exception of a select few such as Mel Weiss and Michael Hausfeld, who worked pro bono at least in the suits against the Swiss banks). In fact, the only one who comes out of this book clean as a whistle is the Don Quixote-ish U.S. government official who goes by the name of Stuart Eizenstat. It is interesting to see how American civil servants used the issue to further their political interests. Alan Hevesi, the New York City comptroller, was a major player in the economic pressure on Swiss banks. He threatened to stop investing the pension funds of city hall employees in these banks, in the hopes of contending for mayor of New York one day (although his Jewish ties also had something to do with it: Hevesi's
grandfather was the chief rabbi of Budapest). The threat by insurance commissioners in various states - they are also political appointees - to impose sanctions on European insurance refusing to pay the families of Holocaust victims for policies taken out before the war, is explained in the
same light
. Even Edward Korman, the federal judge who dealt with some of the lawsuits, was not free of ulterior motives. According to Eizenstat, he owed his seat on the bench to Senator D'Amato. All this raises some intriguing thoughts about the benefits of this political appointment system, which is so maligned in Israel. The Holocaust survivors, on the other hand, play a very small role in Eizenstat's book. They merely supply the motive for the action, and sometimes not even that (the lawyers seek them out and advise them to sue). "Imperfect Justice" is the story of a hard-nosed political and economic negotiation process. Here and there, Eizenstat injects references to the claimants and their stories, as if trying to remind himself and his readers of what we are really talking about. The Israeli Holocaust survivors, who are so central to the media reports in Israel, are of very little importance in his account ... The other government Eizenstat criticizes is the Israeli government, which tried to stay out of the fray because it did not want to endanger its political ties with the countries involved in the litigation. Instead, Israel authorized the world Jewish organizations to represent its citizens in the courts."

Jewish NUS officials resign over anti-semitism row,
by Polly Curtis, Guardian (UK), April 12, 2005
"The Chief Rabbi, Dr Jonathan Sacks, today condemned the National Union of Students after three of its Jewish officials of the union resigned last week over a perceived failure to tackle anti-semitism on campuses. Luciana Berger and Mitch Simmons resigned from the national executive of the NUS and Jonny Warren resigned from the steering committee during the union's national conference last week in Blackpool. They claimed that the union's leadership was "turning a blind eye" to anti-semitic leaflets being distributed at conference and a series of rows on campuses throughout the year. Kat Fletcher, the president of the union, said she was "deeply concerned" by the resignations. Ms Berger, who has been convenor of NUS's anti-racism campaign this year, said: "There's been a host of events throughout the year. Issues of anti-semitism have been brought to the leadership's attention and there's been total inaction. At conference, which is the heart of our democracy, there were further events of anti-semitism. The leadership were turning a blind eye to anti-semitism." The leaflets at conference referred to the Elders of the Protocol of Zion, a 19th century forgery which claimed that there was a plan for Jewish global domination and was subsequently used in anti-Jewish propaganda. Other instances throughout the year relate largely to an ongoing row at the School of Oriental and African Studies, part of the University of London, where there have been continuing clashes between the Jewish society and the union. Jewish students objected to a conference organised by the Palestinian society on the academic boycott of Israel, entitled Resisting Israeli Apartheid: Strategies and Principles. In a statement issued by the Union of Jewish students, Dr Sacks said: "I am distressed that the atmosphere at this year's NUS conference was so hostile that the Jewish members of its executive felt compelled to resign. They did
not do this lightly. Having spent the weekend with Jewish student leaders, it is clear that they felt threatened by the atmosphere at NUS conference, disturbed by materials being distributed there, and dismayed at the lack of support from the NUS leadership. This cannot continue if NUS is to win the
fight against racism in all its forms
."

Jews prominent in 'Top 100' list,
by Rebecca Stoil, Jerusalem Post,
April 11, 2005
"Time magazine's annual "Top 100" list features Jews in all five categories ... [Ariel] Sharon is not the only Israeli politician to make the list. Minister for Diaspora Affairs Natan Sharansky appears on the list of "Scientists and Thinkers." Sharansky's, The Case for Democracy, is reported to be making the rounds of the White House, from fellow "influential person" President George W. Bush on down. Although Sharansky is one of only two Israelis on the list, he is not the sole Jew in his category. Australian-born ethicist Peter Singer, Harvard President Larry Summers, economist Jeffrey Sachs, and medical best-selling author Andrew Weil are all mentioned as "Scientists and Thinkers," following such notable Jews as Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud and Jonas Salk ... The Jewish representation in the category of "Builders and Titans" was equally strong – three out of a total of 20. "Google Guy" Russian-Jewish emigre Sergei Brin won mention, as did Sir Martin Sorrell, founder of the WPP Group. Perhaps the most famous among "titanic" Jews on the 2005 list is Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who has an estimated personal wealth of 7.5 billion. Art Spiegelman is the only Jewish person on the "Artists and Entertainers" list. The cartoonist is famous for his critically acclaimed Maus comics that are popular among Holocaust educators teaching to all sectors of the population. Spiegelman holds a place in a category that in the 2000 list of "Top 100 influential figures of the century" was dominated by Jewish superstars Bob Dylan, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein and Steven Spielberg. New York State Attorney-General Eliot Spitzer stands alone in the "Heroes and Icons" category. Spitzer, known as "the People's Lawyer" is no stranger to such accolades. He has been called "Crusader of the Year" by Time; "The Sheriff of Wall Street" by 60 Minutes; and "The Enforcer" by People magazine. Reader's Digest magazine considers him America's "Best Public Servant." ... All in all, Jewish representation in the 2005 edition is vastly disproportional to their numbers. Jews constitute approximately 12% of this year's list, while representing an estimated quarter of a percent of the world's population ... All Time bureau and section editors may send nominations for the lists. The nominations are then reviewed by an inside circle of editors. Ultimately, all of the "Top 100" are informed of their selection when they receive an invitation to the "Top 100" dinner in New York's Rainbow Room."

Attack on Jewish MP,
by Leslie Bunder, Something Jewish (UK),April 4, 2005
"Jewish MP Oona King and scores of Jewish senior citizens were verbally abused with eggs thrown at them in the East End during a memorial service to remember those who died during a V2 bombing in 1945. The MP for Bethnal Green and Bow was at the Hughes Mansions area to pay respect to the 134 people who were killed by the last V2 missle to hit London. While the attack was said to be mainly on Ms King and her support for the war in Iraq, those attending were hit by eggs and other vegetables including an 89-year-old war veteran and Jewish Lads and Girls Brigade bugler Richard Brettwho sounded the Last Post. "I think they were aimed at me, but the sheer ignorance  never mind the lack of respect is shocking. They have no idea where their freedom came from and who gave it to them," Ms King said. "They don't know they are lucky to be here. That is truly one of the saddest things I have ever seen. There were people who helped save this country, having eggs pelted at them at a time when they are remembering those they had lost. It's disgusting."

Al Goldstein Joins XonDemand as National Marketing Director
,
Yahoo! Financial News, April 11, 2005
"Al Goldstein, founder of Screw Magazine has gone from the being a multi-millionaire at the top of his game to being thrown in jail, to being homeless living on the streets of New York City, to making a comeback thanks to his famous friends and a relatively new company named XonDemand. XonDemand is an Internet Video on Demand (VOD) website in a multi-billion dollar adult video market that streams over 16,000 on demand movies from more than 500 studios in over 120 niches on its site for as little as eight cents per minute. XonDemand is proud to be a member of ASACP, the Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection and safeguards its content with the latest Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology available. It was XonDemand's need to make a bigger name for themselves in the industry and Al Goldstein's desire to get back into the business that paired the two up in the March of 2005. Born in the late 1930s in New York City, Al Goldstein quickly developed a love for all things controversial. After a series of failed jobs, he launched Screw magazine in the fall of 1968. It was an instant success thanks to its mix of off-color editorials, political rants, and pornographic material. Al also produced and starred in a cable access show called Midnight Blue. He continued to push the envelope of good taste all through the 70s, 80s, and 90s. At his mansion in Florida, he erected an 11 foot high statue of a hand giving the middle finger, the ultimate Screw you symbol to those who opposed his career. But his success came at a price, and he couldn't stay at the top of his game forever. Throughout his career, he was arrested nearly 20 times on varying accounts of obscenity. In 2002, he was found guilty of harassing his former secretary for publishing her name in an issue of Screw. Thanks to the rising popularity of porn on the Internet, his magazine sales were down over 70% by 2003. The following year, he was forced to pull the plug on Screw, losing all of the $11 million he was worth. Al Goldstein went from living the life of luxury, to the life of a homeless person ... Late in 2004, he appeared again on Howard Stern to beg for a job... and it worked, sort of. He ended up working for another of his loves... food, at a local deli and bagel shop. Unfortunately after two months, he was fired for sleeping on the job. But during all this, he knew he really wanted to return to the business that made him a success, he just needed a way back in. XonDemand's president Frank Ryan read about Al's current situation in an Adult Video News press release and how he was seeking employment in the adult industry once again. Ryan saw this as a perfect opportunity for his growing company to really get itself on the map by teaming up with Al Goldstein. After a successful meeting in February 2005, Al was offered a position as National Marketing Director for XonDemand. Al will remain in New York and work out of his apartment, which will keep him closer to all the print, television, and radio opportunities New York City holds. Frank Ryan sees this as a win-win situation because his company needs national exposure, and Al get to do what Al does best, market and create awareness for himself and XonDemand. And things seem to be working out well for the pairing. Al has already appeared on the late night syndicated Joey Reynolds radio show, along with a high energy appearance on the nationally broadcast Derek and Romaine show on Sirius satellite radio. He mentioned XonDemand about 500 times during the 40 minute interview. It is this ability to shamelessly plug that will make Al a very successful addition to XonDemand."

[JTR contributor's note: "the predictable pattern..." Our comment: The real issue is not the "theocratic right" in America. It is the FORBIDDEN topic: obsessive Judeocentrism and empowered Jews like Frank Rich who function like dictators in the Jew York Times. "Culture of Death?" That would be ISRAEL and its sycophants who rule America.]
A Culture of Death, Not Life,
By FRANK RICH, New York Times, April 10, 2005
"Mortality - the more graphic, the merrier - is the biggest thing going in America. Between Terri Schiavo and the pope, we've feasted on decomposing bodies for almost a solid month now. The carefully edited, three-year-old video loops of Ms. Schiavo may have been worthless as medical evidence but as necro-porn their ubiquity rivaled that of TV's top entertainment franchise, the all-forensics-all-the-time "CSI." To help us visualize the dying John Paul, another Fox star, Geraldo Rivera, brought on Dr. Michael Baden, the go-to cadaver expert from the JonBenet Ramsey, Chandra Levy and Laci Peterson mediathons, to contrast His Holiness's cortex with Ms. Schiavo's ... These fables are of a piece with the violent take on Christianity popularized by "The Passion of the Christ." Though Mel Gibson brought a less gory version, with the unfortunate title "The Passion Recut," to some 1,000 theaters for Easter in response to supposed popular demand, there was no demand. (Back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that at many screens the film sold fewer than 50 tickets the entire opening weekend.) "Passion" fans want the full scourging, and at the height of the protests outside the Schiavo hospice, a TV was hooked up so the assembled could get revved up by watching the grisly original on DVD ... But the media plug was pulled on Ms. Schiavo, too, once the pope took center stage; the funeral Mass her parents conducted on Tuesday was all but shunned by the press pack that had moved on to Rome. By the night of his death days later, even John Paul had worn out his welcome. The audience that tuned in to the N.C.A.A. semifinals on CBS was roughly twice as large as that for the NBC and ABC papal specials combined ... We don't know the identity of the corpse that will follow the pope in riveting the nation's attention. What we do know is that the reality show we've made of death has jumped the shark, turning from a soporific television diversion into the cultural embodiment of the apocalyptic right's growing theocratic crusade." [Is that something like "Judeocentrism's festering Holy War against morality, democracy and free speech -- the omnipresent totalitarianism that is forcibly veiled (by all the controlling Frank Richs) in the public shadow?"]

[More Jewish interpretation of death and Christianity, passed along to us with the above article. The whole field of "Psychohistory" is an expression of Jewish weirdness, i.e., psychotherapy as the Jewish secular religion, slave to their dancing, naked, horny god of Neurosis.]
Ecstatic Stigmatics and Holy Anorexics, Medieval and Contemporary,
by Sharon Klayman Farber, Journal of Psychohistory, 31, 2: 182- 204
"The Passion of Christ has provided Western culture with its most enduring images of human suffering: the bleeding and emaciated Jesus nailed to the cross, a crown of thorns piercing his scalp, his mouth open in agony. In some paintings a spear pierces his side, releasing a startling gush of blood. The Passion of Christ has also provided the West with our most enduring images of death and rebirth ... When death becomes deified and eroticized, this promotes the flirtationw ith death. Death Anxiety and the Eroticization of Death People desperately want to know what it is like to “cross over” to death, as recent television hits such as HBO’s Six Feet Under and Crossing Over With John Edward (known as “the guy who talks to dead people”) has demonstrated ... Ever since the Black Death devastated and traumatized Europe in the fourteenth century, a very real European culture of death developed (Binion, 2003). The Black Death killed nearly one out of two,
piling the streets high with rotting, putrid corpses, and came to define Europe, uniting the continent psychologically in a figurative reliving of the trauma that flourished in elite and folk culture. Death was depicted as a seducer, dancing a danse macabre with nubile women as he lured them to their deaths, and then as a violent rapist, who grabs women and throws them to the ground to die, writhing. Death had become violently eroticized and remains so. Today we see the phenomena of convicted male killers, especially if they are handsome, receiving offers of marriage by women irresistibly attracted to them. Freud (Freud, 1913) wrote of the reversals that mask the figure of death: the beautiful woman who stands for the terrible destructive goddess, an idealized corpse ... [Oh, bullshit. Jewish obsessives, the Grim Reaper is never depicted with your perpetual search for a hard-on.] Jesus’ Suffering and the European Culture of Death Since the thirteenth century, devoted Christians focused on the nature of Jesus and his suffering. Wanting to be like Jesus, they began to suffer with him and like him, creating their own ecstasies of pain and near-death experiences. Compounding the Christian preoccupation with death was the European culture of death (Binion 2003)." [Oh, yes! Quite unlike Jews, wherein their "Holocaust" -- the heart of modern Jewish identity -- is a celebration of rising tulips and apple blossoms. Oh, twisted Jewish weird-ohs get turned on by the crucifixion. Work on settling your own incessant, convoluted bizarreness before you muster the gall to try to figure out others. Conquer a mirror before you dare to claim the right to decree what others think and feel.]

The new anti-Semitism?,
ByJonathan Cook, I Views, April 8, 2005
"Anti-Semitism, like some plague-inducing virus, is "evolving" -- or so warns Holocaust scholar Daniel J. Goldhagen in the American Jewish weekly The Forward. According to the author, the lessons of the Holocaust are slowly being forgotten and a "free-floating" globalized hatred of Jews is being spread via the Internet and television. Goldhagen's piece, "The Globalisation of anti-Semitism," is one of the latest contributions to a growing body of reports by American and Israeli journalists and research centers purporting to show that a powerful new strain of racism is sweeping the globe. None of the authors is as disinterested as he claims: each hopes to silence criticism of both Israel and the muscular Zionist lobby groups within Washington that support Israel. Goldhagen's trick is to turn traditional Christian anti-Semitism on its head. Where once the anti-Semites accused the Jews of being the contagion carriers -- harming their neighbors by spreading their uniquely "diseased" financial, professional and moral ideas -- now it is the non-Jew who must be quarantined. We are all anti-Semites unless we can prove otherwise.  "Globalized anti-Semitism has become part of the substructure of prejudice in the world," Goldhagen writes. "It is relentlessly international in its focus on Israel at the center of the most conflict-ridden region today, and on the United States as the world's omnipresent power." The rise of Arab anti-Semitism, which has no obvious connection to historic European hatred of Jews, is explained away: "Essentially, Europe has exported its classical racist and Nazi anti-Semitism to Arab countries, which they then applied to Israel and Jews in general." The process, however, has not stopped there, according to Goldhagen. "Then the Arab countries re-exported the new hybrid demonology back to Europe and, using the United Nations and other international institutions, to other countries around the world. In Germany, France, Great Britain and elsewhere, today's intensive anti-Semitic expression and agitation uses old tropes once applied to local Jews -- charges of sowing disorder, wanting to subjugate others -- with new content overwhelmingly directed at Jews outside their countries." The only way to prove one is not infected, Goldhagen implies, is by abstaining from any criticism of Israel and Zionist influences -- Christian as well as Jewish -- currently dominating Washington's policy-making circles. Goldhagen makes a solitary concession: that "fair" criticism can be made of Israeli policies, although who is to be the arbiter is left unclear. Even were genuine peace in the Middle East to be achieved, he believes "anti-Semitism's deep roots in the ever more globalizing consciousness, and its tenacity and plasticity, make its dissipation unlikely." There is little basis for any of Goldhagen's conclusions. Research consistently shows that for many years the most insidious form of anti-Semitism has been directed not against Jews but Muslims. In the wake of September 11, that is truer than ever, with unthinking stereotypes of "the Arab" promoted in the mainstream media, Hollywood films and much of the language used by the White House ... The success of Zionist academics and journalists in winning a disproportionate share of world attention for the plight of the Jewish Diaspora, thus eclipsing the concerns of the Arab Diaspora, is proof in itself that global Jewry today enjoys a far more protected status than its inferior Semitic cousin. Nonetheless, it is accepted without question by scholars like Goldhagen and by policymakers in the US capital that eternal vigilance is needed in the battle to defeat anti-Semitism. Such an assumption recently led to the Orwellian double-think of senior Republican senator Rick Santorum. He announced in April that he would be introducing "ideological diversity" legislation to empower officials to cut funding to any college that allows its staff or students to criticise Israel openly. The urgent need for legislation to protect Jews on campuses across America was justified by the Zionist pressure group the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which reported a 24 per cent rise in anti-Semitic "incidents" at US colleges last year. Even allowing for the fact that the ADL is vague about what constitutes an "anti-Semitic incident", mixing "assaults" with "harassment", this percentile rise represents a mere 21 additional incidents on college campuses in all of the United States in 2002.  One need only look at the list of Washington's most powerful lobby groups -- from the ADL and American Israel Public Action Committee (AIPAC) to the Zionist Organization of America and the American Jewish Committee -- to understand that the Jewish community and Israel have a forceful voice on Capitol Hill safeguarding their interests. There are no equally influential Arab lobbying groups, which may explain why attacks on Muslims and the increasingly draconian administrative measures being taken against Arabs and Muslims in the US and Europe go largely unreported and thus unprotested ... Such glaring disparities stem from the inherent difficulty of defining an "anti-Semitic act." The Wiesenthal Centre apparently includes almost anything -- from a knife attack, to a journalist's vitriol against Ariel Sharon, to the mere title of the Electronic Intifada website, which the Wiesenthal Centre cited as evidence -- along with the blathering of American neo-Nazi organizations and existence of some tasteless but low budget video games apparently produced by teenagers in the Arab world -- in a report on anti-Semitism's spread through the Internet ... The diagnosis from Goldhagen and others is that we, the non-Jews, are doomed to our age-old racism. It's in our genes: we are born in thrall to our prejudice. Where does such a thesis lead? In another time and place, it may -- like other philosophies of uniqueness and disease that preceded it -- take us along a route that leads to the horrible gas chambers of a warped imagination."

[Jewish sickness declares the rest of the world to be sick for resisting Jewish sickness, in an endless loop:]
Israeli expert: "Holocaust fatigue" is a mental illness,
National Business Review, April 11, 2005
"The headline in the Jerusalem Post couldn't have been clearer: "New Zealand MP 'sick' of Holocaust." Dr Efraim Zuroff, the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Israel director, told the JPost that the comments by Mr Tamihere, released over the weekend and earning an assignment to political limbo from Helen Clark, could mean that the MP was unfit for public service and needed psychological counselling. "It would appear that MP Tamihere is in urgent need of psychological assistance to increase his ability to deal with the sad history and reality of life on the planet Earth during the past century, an absolutely necessary quality for anyone who desires to serve as a public representative. In that respect, 'Holocaust fatigue' is simply a new form of mental illness, which is a condition which should disqualify him from public service," said Dr Zuroff.' Bulgaria arrests cocaine smuggling suspect wanted in Turkey,
Bulgarian News Network, April 4, 2005
"Bulgaria has arrested an Israeli national wanted in Turkey to serve 24 years in prison for drug traffic, a senior police official said Monday. Police on the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing to Turkey on Sunday arrested Mazaret Gazi, 52, who was traveling by train from Istanbul to Sofia with false identity papers, Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Boyko Borisov said. Turkey has been searching for Gazi world wide since Dec. 2003, he added. Gazi has been convicted of trafficking 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of cocaine from Peru to Turkeey by ship. It was not clear how he escaped from serving his term in Turkey.
Bulgarian police arrested Gazi for 72 hours, pending extradition proceedings."

Where the Judenrat met,
by Esther Zandberg, Haaretz (Israel), April 6, 2005
"In Warsaw last week the first phase of the international planning competition for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews was completed, and the architectural firms that will go on to compete in the final stage of the competition, which will take place in July, were announced. The idea for establishing the museum came up about 10 years ago and the structure is to be built in the area of the former Warsaw Ghetto, at the site where the building of the Judenrat headquarters stood, near Anielewicz Street and opposite the memorial for the uprising by sculptor Natan Rappaport. Construction is slated to begin next year and to be completed in 2008. Without a doubt this is one of the most fraught and sensitive of construction sites - also in the context of the crowded and competitive arena of Jewish museums around the world today. Applying to participate in the planning competition, which was announced by the initiator of the museum - a Polish body called the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland - were 119 architectural firms from 36 countries, among them Poland, which sent the largest number of proposals, the United States, Germany and Holland. From Israel, 15 firms applied; this was a relatively large number, but predictable considering the nature of the project. Eleven firms have moved on to the second stage, among them Daniel Libeskind, Peter Eisenman and Zvi Hecker (an Israeli architect who works in Germany). In retrospect, it is hard to imagine a competition for the planning of a Jewish museum in Poland without the latter three architects. All have been identified during recent decades with planning Jewish institutions in the Diaspora, and with memorial and commemorative architecture. Eisenman is the planner of the Berlin memorial dedicated to the Jews of Europe who were murdered in the Holocaust, and which will be dedicated this coming May on the 60th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. Libeskind, the architect of the Ground Zero site in New York, has planned a series of Jewish museums, first and foremost the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Hecker has planned the Jewish school in Berlin and the Jewish Cultural Center in the city of Duisberg, Germany ... The idea of establishing a Jewish museum in Poland was first suggested by the late Jeshajahu Weinberg, a very active figure in the field of commemorative facilities and one of the founders of the Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv and the Holocaust Museum in Washington, of which he was the first director. Weinberg enlisted Halbersztadt, who with other activists at the historical institute, convinced influential individuals around the world of its necessity and legitimacy, and began to raise donations for its establishment. Among the public figures who have been recruited for the idea is also Vice Premier Shimon Peres, who for several years now has been a member of the honorary board of trustees of the new facility. The contributions that were gathered helped in the initial research and in collection of documents, which thus far number 60,000. Gradually the political establishment in Poland also got involved in the initiative. Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski committed himself to supporting it and the Warsaw municipality donated the land for construction. A special agreement that was signed on January 25 of this year between the government of Poland and the city of Warsaw and the institute dispelled many doubts that had remained concerning the establishment of the museum. The tripartite agreement formalizes the status of the museum and ensures that 80 percent of the costs of construction and 97 percent of the cost of the upkeep will be covered. The overall cost of the museum is estimated at $55 million - a respectable sum, but modest in comparison to the value of the assets of Polish Jewry on the eve of the war (which has been estimated at $30 billion, according to a report that was commissioned by the government of Israel and was published recently). The historical institute will raise its part in the funding of the establishment of the museum from private donations... The exhibition will be "thematic" and as noted at the project's Internet site, it will show the 1,000 years of Jewish history in Poland - dating back to the beginnings of the Jewish presence there, through the "Golden Age" in the 16th and 17th centuries, on to the period of the war and the Holocaust, to the "new blossoming" of the Jewish community in the 1990s. It will also show "the role of the Polish Jews in the creation of the State of Israel." The historical and curatorial concept of the museum, whereby the Holocaust is just one chapter in the history of Polish Jewry - though a "tragic, terrible and incomprehensible chapter" - has stirred quite a bit of opposition and the concern has been raised that it will dwarf the memory of the Holocaust and aid in the "cleansing of the consciences" of the Poles. The initiators of the project believe, however, that "the presentation of 1,000 years of Jewish history in Poland will aid in the understanding of the dimensions of the tragedy of the Holocaust." Everyone connected to the establishment of the museum is taking care to stress that this is not a Holocaust museum as such, and that "we cannot allow even the most dramatic moment in the history, the Holocaust, to deny the presence of the Jewish community in Poland," in the words of one Polish minister. He added that "this is a difficult mission to achieve, very difficult." And indeed, the experience of the Jewish Museum in Berlin has shown that even though its initiators stressed that it is only a historical museum, it is perceived in the mind of the public as a Holocaust museum in every respect. There is no doubt that the architectural design - the museum in Berlin is shaped like a broken Star of David - and the rhetoric surrounding it, which sometimes gets out of control, has played a considerable part in how it has been labeled."

IDF rabbi composes prayer for Pollard. Army's chief rabbi Yisrael Weiss meets with imprisoned spy during recent visit to U.S.; calls Pollard "true hero",
By Hanan Greenberg, Yedioth Aharonoth (Israel), 11 Apr 2005
"IDF Chief Rabbi Brig.-Gen. Yisrael Weiss has composed a special prayer for the release of Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, currently imprisoned in the United States. The prayer was distributed among IDF soldiers so they may pray for the release of Pollard, an American Navy Intelligence researcher and analyst who was arrested in 1985 and later charged with spying on behalf of Israel. IDF rabbinate officials told Ynet that Rabbi Weiss had met with Pollard in prison during a recent trip to the U.S. During the meeting, Pollard asked the rabbi to compose a prayer for his prompt release, they said. The officials added everything was done with the approval of senior Israeli security authorities. Adi Ginzburg of The Committee to Bring Jonathan Pollard Home said “pursuant to the meeting Rabbi Weiss sent Pollard a letter stating ‘a true hero was revealed to me - humane, opinionated, a proud and believing Jew’.” “Unfortunately it is too late, but it is a formal recognition by the IDF of the importance of Pollard’s efforts,” he said. “This support is important to us during this juncture in
which the prime minister is traveling to the U.S. without the petition for Pollard’s release; at least someone remembers Jonathan.” Ginzburg added: “We know (Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon is willing to pay a heavy price for things that are important to him, like (Elhanan) Tennenbaum and the disengagement. We hope to see Jonathan in Israel soon."

'Jewish Jordan' gives aliya a sporting chance,
By Hilary Leila Krieger, Jerusalem Post, 11 Apr 2005
"Last year, three Major League baseball players from the Cubs visited Rachel Barch's school in Chicago. But that was nothing compared to meeting Tamir "the Jewish Jordan" Goodman here on Sunday. "It wasn't special because they weren't Jewish," said the eighth-grader of the Cubs stars' appearance at Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School. "This is – especially because we're in Israel. That's an experience all in itself." She added that Goodman's message resonated more than the Cubs players' push for literacy. "If he can come here and make a stir and be a big success, it definitely leaves an impression on us that it's possible to follow your dreams." That's what Tamir Goodman, who spent the current season on the sidelines with an injury, was hoping for when he arranged to meet with Barch and 29 of her classmates during their two-week visit. He wants to use sports as a means of encouraging Jewish youth to make aliya [move to Israel]. He showed the students a video about his own story: an Orthodox student from Chafetz Chayim Talmudical Academy of Baltimore, dubbed "The Jewish Jordan" by Sports Illustrated, who went on to play NCAA ball and ultimately landed a contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Goodman then gave the teens some tips on how to improve their game and ran drills with them. This summer he will collaborate with former Maccabi star Aulcie Perry to set up a summer basketball camp that will bring 50 American and 50 Israeli students together for three weeks of training and touring the country. "Every Jewish soul loves Israel. A path for opening that soul for some kids can be through sports," Goodman, 23, said in between signing autographs and posing for photos with the students. "The message I try to let kids know is that they can reach all their dreams in Hashem's land," he said, noting how his own experience can be a model and how he wishes he had been exposed to American Jewish athletes in Israel when he was younger. "If I knew when I was younger that I could play in Israel and not worry about [keeping] Shabbat and the holidays, I would have been so excited," he said."

A major in Israel,
By Amiram Barkat, Haaretz, April 10, 2005
"Prof. Ronald Zweig of Tel Aviv University (TAU) was on vacation in Australia last year when he received a surprising phone call. On the other end of the line was a colleague of Zweig's from New York University (NYU), who invited him to accept a chair in Israel studies that had been established there and that was inaugurated this academic year. Zweig, an Israeli historian who specializes in the period of the British Mandate in Palestine, thought about it for quite a while before he replied to the offer ... Today he is supervising NYU doctoral students in Hebrew and Jewish studies. Bachelor's degree students are taking a class with him about the Zionist movement and the State of Israel from 1860 to the Oslo agreements. According to Zweig, he is enjoying every moment: "The level of the doctoral students here, even in Hebrew, is equal to that of the Israelis. In general the academic culture in the United States is at a different level from that in Israel. Apart from that, I can enjoy all the advantages of this wonderful city, New York. There's no doubt that I've been given a great privilege." In addition to the permanent position that Zweig fills, the new center for Israel studies at NYU also offers two research positions for doctoral students, a course for B.A. students, workshops and occasional lectures on society and politics in Israel. At the dedication ceremony for the center, Prof. Robert Chazan, of the school for Hebrew and Jewish studies, noted that the university hardly offers the students advanced programs in Israel studies, whereas in Jewish subjects - European Jewry, the Holocaust, American Jewry and the ancient kingdom of Israel - there is an abundance. Prof. Ilan Troen, a researcher of Zionism from Ben-Gurion University (BGU) of the Negev, who is directing the center for Israel studies at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, says that until not long ago, Israel studies were something of an oddity in the U.S. ... At universities all around the U.S., centers for Israel studies are opening and study programs in the field are springing up all over. The program that Troen chairs at Brandeis University opened two years ago, and Stein was appointed to his position at Emory University four years ago. This year a chair in Israel studies was inaugurated at the University of California at Berkeley, and next year a center for Israel studies will open at the university's branch in Los Angeles. Last week, Forward reported that the prestigious Columbia University has embarked on a search for a permanent lecturer of Israel studies. Troen says that also at other places where there is not yet a permanent chair or a center, there has been a palpable rise in the number of lectures, workshops and conferences dealing with Israel. Centers and programs for Israel studies have also opened at universities in Canada (Toronto and Calgary), England (Manchester) and Australia (Melbourne). Zweig is certain that the phenomenon is only in its infancy: "This week a friend, a senior researcher in Jewish studies, said to me that what is happening now with Israel studies is similar to the big `boom' in Jewish studies that occurred in the U.S. in the 1940s. He is certain that the flowering in the field will continue for at least another eight to 10 years." Troen says that the demographic changes in the Jewish world are one of the main reasons for the increasing weight of Israel studies in the field of Jewish studies. According to him, "within 60 years Israel's relative share of the Jewish world grew from 4 percent to 40 percent, and the specialists in Jewish studies are beginning to realize that this is where the future is." But the main catalyst for the change in direction, according to all the researchers, has not been demographic, but rather political. The intifada that broke out four and a half years ago and the stormy demonstrations against Israel that occurred on a number of campuses in the U.S. shocked Jewish public opinion. The shock gave rise to the realization that many young Jews in America lack basic knowledge about Israel. The awareness of the dominance of pro-Arab scholars in the field of Middle East studies also increased greatly. The development of Israel studies looked like the obvious answer to these two nodes of threat. More and more prominent Jewish journalists, researchers and key activists in Jewish Federations called upon the Jews of the U.S. to contribute to the development of Israel studies at universities ... Michael Kotzin, one of the heads of the Jewish Federation in Chicago, published an article in January 2004 in the Forward in which he called upon the Jews of the U.S. to direct fewer contributions to Holocaust research and increase the financial aid they extend to Israel studies, because, he wrote, "today, it is the future of Israel that is the most significant existential issue facing the Jewish people." All of the new centers for Israel studies are funded by local Jewish communities or through private donors. In some cases the donors state explicitly their intention to bring about an improvement in Israel's image. This was the case, for example, with Helen Diller, who donated the money to found the chair for Israel studies at Berkeley. Diller, an alumna of the university, was very disturbed by the stormy demonstrations against Israel at the Berkeley campus in recent years. In an interview to the local Jewish Bulletin of Northern California, she explained that she had decided to make the donation for the establishment of the chair in order to improve Israel's image. In 2003 she donated $5 million to establish a chair for a visiting lecturer from Israel. "Pro-Israel elements on the U.C. Berkeley campus have 5 million new reasons to believe the university is listening to them," declared the newspaper. But Diller, an inexperienced philanthropist, gave the university
administration total freedom in choosing the lecturer to man the chair. The
administration gave the position to Dr. Oren Yiftachel, a geographer from
BGU, who is among the harshest critics of the Israeli government in the academic world. It is hard to imagine that Diller had wanted to bring to Berkeley a lecturer who proposes the elimination of Israel's definition as a Jewish state and turning it into a state of all its citizens. In the Chicago Federation they learned the lessons. According to a plan initiated by the federation, starting in the coming academic year visiting professors from Israel will be invited to the universities in the city and its surroundings. The lecturers will come to Chicago through TAU. Three universities from the Chicago area have already signed up for the program. Naomi Levine, one of the initiators of the center for Israel studies at NYU, has said that she believes that the center will instill in students the recognition of Israel's right to exist. According to Prof. Zweig, the donors' motives have no influence on the centers' academic freedom. "I made it clear to my employers that I had not come here to engage in propaganda, but rather to conduct serious academic research. I am certain that it is possible to be objective, if we are conscientious about giving suitable representation to the opinions of all the sides," he says."

US unready for rising threat of 'moles'. A recent report on US intelligence harshly critiqued counter-spy efforts,
by Faye Bowers, Christian Science Monitor, April 8, 2005
"Amid all the criticism of the US's faulty intelligence-gathering, a new concern is surfacing about America's premier national-security agencies - their vulnerability to counterespionage.
It's not only foes, like members of terror groups or nations that are adversaries of the US, but friends as well. The top five countries trying to snoop on US plans and cutting-edge technology, according to an official who works closely with the FBI on this issue, are China, Russia, Israel, France, and North Korea. Others running close behind: Cuba, Pakistan, and India ... Paul Redmond, a former CIA counterintelligence official who spoke at the conference last month, said it is an "actuarial certainty" that foreign spies have again infiltrated US national-security agencies. The CIA, according to a recruiter at the conference, has already flagged about 40 applicants who they think may have tried to be double agents. This would fit Al Qaeda's pattern [Come on! Who else, even as we await the results of FBI investigations into subversive AIPAC?], according to Michael Scheuer, a former top CIA counterterrorism official. Al Qaeda operatives, he says, have already penetrated several security agencies in Middle Eastern countries. The US has long had trouble with double agents. During the cold war, essentially every component of the US's national- security apparatus - with maybe the exception of the Coast Guard - was penetrated, experts say. Moles working for adversaries of the US stole closely guarded secrets, including details on nuclear weapons programs, cryptographic codes, and information on how the US spies on its adversaries ... The US shares critical technology and weapons programs with allies, like Israel. But in the past, and again more recently, the US has censured Israel for selling that technology to US adversaries, like China. Just last week, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld met with Israel's defense minister, Shaul Mofaz, and reportedly made it clear that Israel was to stop selling US-originated weapons systems, like the HARPY unmanned aerial vehicle, to China."

‘Sick and tired of Holocaust’. New Zealand parliament member suspended after saying he has had enough of "hearing how many Jews got gassed",
By Ronen Bodoni, Yedioth Aharonoth (Israel), April 10, 2005
"New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced Sunday she is suspending fellow Labor MP John Tamihere for saying he is “sick and tired of hearing how many Jews got gassed.” Clark said in statement that party leaders decided Tamihere was to go on “extended leave” and would not participate in upcoming party activities. She added the statements made by Tamihere were “deeply offensive” and “utterly unacceptable.” According to a New Zealand Herald report, in response to a question by Investigate Magazine on how the country’s society can focus on the wrongdoings of the past, Tamihere said, "The Wiesenthal Institute is the same. I’m sick and tired of hearing how many Jews got gassed, not because I’m not revolted by it - I am - or I’m not violated by it - I am - but because I already know that. How many times do I have to be told and made to feel guilty?" he said. The statement evoked harsh responses from Jewish organizations."

Tamihere "sick" of Holocaust,
By David Fisher and Jonathan Milne, New Zealand Herald, April 11, 2005
"Labour MP John Tamihere says he is "sick and tired of hearing how many Jews got gassed". The comments - branded yesterday by the Jewish Council as "sickening" and "deeply shocking for all Jews" - were made in the same interview in which Mr Tamihere referred to Cabinet minister Chris Carter as a "tosser" and "queer" and Cabinet minister Steve Maharey as "smarmy". They were released yesterday by Investigate magazine editor Ian Wishart after a spat with Mr Tamihere about the recording of the interview. Alerted yesterday to the remark, Prime Minister Helen Clark said through a spokesman that while the government understood the pain the comment caused the Jewish community, she was certain Mr Tamihere meant no offence. In the interview, Mr Tamihere is asked by Mr Wishart [Jewish?] about how a society can be focused on injustices of the past. Mr Tamihere responds: "The Weisenthal Institute is the same. I'm sick and tired of hearing how many Jews got gassed, not because I'm not revolted by it - I am - or I'm not violated by it - I am - but because I already know that. How many times do I have to be told and made to feel guilty?" David Zwartz, president of the New Zealand Jewish Council, said Mr Tamihere's comment was sickening for New Zealand Jews who suffered in the Holocaust and whose families were gassed. "It is deeply shocking for all other Jews, as was the earlier trivialising of the Holocaust by Mrs Tariana Turia. Jews have no desire to make Mr Tamihere or anyone feel guilty, we only want to have the historic truth known and understood so discrimination and oppression leading to genocide won't happen again" ... Tony Soljan, managing director of Soljans Estate Winery, said yesterday Mr Tamihere and the other person had talked to staff, who had asked that any conversation with them not be recorded. Mr Soljan said his staff felt "let down" when it emerged they had been taped. Mr Wishart said the attempted "cover-up" by Mr Tamihere meant further excerpts would be released. He would also be lodging a complaint with TVNZ over its handling of the issue on Agenda yesterday."

Dialogue: Whose holocaust? That is still a good question,
By Danny Keenan, New Zealand Herald, June 9, 2000
"The Associate Minister of Maori Affairs, Tariana Turia, raised quite a storm qith her use of the word "holocaust" in a speech to a gathering of psychologists. Mrs Turia likened the Maori experience of colonisation to a "holocaust." The response Mrs Turia provoked was little short of incredible. Yet it says something about the insular and almost precious nature of New Zealand society that the use of this word should have raised the firestorm that it did, to the extent that we have had no less a person than the Prime Minister herself pronouncing the word to be inappropriate in the New Zealand context, and requiring Mrs Turia to apologise. Many people who responded negatively to Mrs Turia's comments did so on the basis that the word holocaust now "belongs to the Jewish people," so to speak. The word can only be used, many argue, to describe the horrific Jewish experience in Europe during the 1930s and 40s. What is interesting to note, however, is that beyond these insular shores of ours, sharp debates over the use of the word holocaust are hardly new. Not long ago a very tense argument was conducted through the correspondence columns of the Times Literary Supplement over the use of the word holocaust. Many academics in Britain have criticised Jewish scholars for seeking to appropriate the word for themselves and their own historical experience. Jewish scholars have also been criticised for their condemning of all other people who might want to point to some other passage of horrific history as a holocaust. Many academics have argued that the word did not belong to the Jewish people. They argue that holocaust remained an appropriate term to use when describing the historical experience of many groups of people, especially indigenous peoples. In the United States, for example, the use of holocaust by Native American scholars has produced a prolonged and quite bitter academic argument. This argument was heightened when David Stannard's book American Holocaust - the Conquest of the New World appeared in 1992. Stannard argued that Indian peoples had experienced centuries of dispossession and genocide. His book is still one of the most gut-wrenching books on this terrible topic I have ever read, and I have read a few. With this publication, Stannard brought a firestorm on his head. He was much condemned by many ordinary Americans, who could not tolerate the use of the word holocaust to describe the long and horrific history of loss experienced by native peoples, a history which, by no coincidence, had occurred in their own backyards. Stannard was also much criticised by scholars for this and earlier works, especially those focusing on Hawaii. More recently, Cherokee historian Ward Churchill has weighed into the debate with a remarkable resolve. Churchill is an intense and polemic writer who demonstrates an enormous command of detail; and he, too, has attracted a considerable amount of criticism. Churchill has especially confronted those American scholars who claim that the word holocaust does not apply to the colonising history of his own Cherokee people. Churchill contends that the Cherokee history of forced removal and dispossession did constitute a holocaust, since, in a short time, the Cherokee people were left devastated. He has further raised the stakes by comparing those who deny native people their holocaust to those who seek to deny that the Jewish Holocaust ever existed ... Mrs Turia concluded her speech to the psychologists by pointing out that she was aware that such an intense holocaust debate existed - "a debate, I must add, that I do not wish to enter." These were noble sentiments indeed. She clearly did not, however, reckon upon the insular nature of our small country, and on the vehement criticism and denial which followed as to the appropriateness of linking the colonisation of Maori to the use of certain images of history and language. Yet such debates are a common feature of the historical and political landscape overseas."

Ahenakew says he still believes Jews started war. Former aboriginal leader David Ahenakew told his hate trial Tuesday he still believes Jews were the cause of the Second World War,
Aboriginal Times,
April 7, 2005
"The former head of the Assembly of First Nations and member of the Order of Canada is charged under the Criminal Code with wilfully promoting hatred against an identifiable group. "So you still believe today, in 2005, that the Jewish people started the Second World War?" Crown prosecutor Brent Klause asked Ahenakew. "Yes," he responded. Ahenakew testified it was the Germans who told him that when he served overseas in the military after the war. He joined in 1951. His testimony culminated a morning filled with tension. Agitated members of the public gallery at points yelled "racist" as Klause asked questions of Ahenakew in front of Judge Marty Irwin, who is hearing the case without a jury. Ahenakew's defence lawyer, Doug Christie, in turn attacked the media for its reporting on the case. The jeers against Klause came when he suggested to Ahenakew: "You are not an unsophisticated individual from some remote northern band." Irwin asked Klause to re-phrase the question, which he did, but at the morning break he was approached by at least one individual who swore at him and told him he was offended by the remark. Klause returned after the break and apologized to the court. Ahenakew, 71, has said he believes he was goaded into making his controversial opinions public when he was interviewed by a reporter after a fiery speech in December 2002 to the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations. "What it says to me is they are out to destroy," said Ahenakew, who charged that the story by Saskatoon StarPhoenix reporter James Parker was a "blatant distortion." The speech and the interview led Saskatchewan Justice to bring the hate charges against Ahenakew ... Irwin already heard Monday how Ahenakew mentioned in his speech that he believed the Jews started the Second World War. A reporter later asked him for an interview, taped it and published his remarks. "How do you get rid of a disease like that, that's going to take over, that's going to dominate?" Ahenakew told the reporter. "The Jews damn near owned all of Germany prior to the war. That's how Hitler came in. He was going to make damn sure that the Jews didn't take over Germany or Europe. That's why he fried six million of those guys, you know. Jews would have owned the God-damned world. And look what they're doing. They're killing people in Arab countries." Ahenakew already testified he didn't think his remarks would be published and he didn't intend to cause an "international incident." Klause pointed out Ahenakew has said in the past he has given at least a thousand interviews as an aboriginal leader ... Ahenakew was 35 when he became the youngest man ever elected chief of the Saskatchewan Indian Federation in 1968. He served a record 10 years in that job. He also served as chief of the Assembly of First Nations from 1982 to 1985. He was named a member of the Order of Canada in 1978 for his work as a member of a United Nations committee and of the World Indigenous Peoples Council. He was also cited for years of service to Indians and Metis in Saskatchewan."

Jack Abramoff. The friend Tom DeLay can't shake,
By James Harding, Slate, April 7, 2005
"Bad company Where to begin examining the extraordinary career of Jack Abramoff? His work trying to secure a visa for the great Zairian kleptocrat Mobutu Sese Seko, perhaps, or the bilking of an estimated $66 million out of Native American tribes, clients he described as
"monkeys," "troglodytes," and "idiots"?
Or his leadership of a 1980s think tank financed, unbeknownst to him apparently, by the intelligence arm of South Africa's apartheid regime? No, the chapter of our man's story that matters most at the moment begins with a toast given by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay during a New Year's trip they both took to Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands in 1997. "When one of my closest and dearest friends, Jack Abramoff, your most able representative in Washington, D.C., invited me to the islands, I wanted to see firsthand the free-market success and the progress and reform you have made," DeLay said before an audience of Abramoff's clients in the islands' garment industry —whom, upon his return to Washington, he helped win an extended exemption from federal immigration and labor laws. The most salient fact about Abramoff these days is that he may prove DeLay's undoing. The House majority leader has so far commanded extraordinary, tight-lipped loyalty from the Republican ranks in Congress in the face of scandals detailed here. But precedent is not on his side ... At least one conservative redoubt, the Wall Street Journal's editorial page, has already thrown open the door. Mr. DeLay has "an unsavory whiff that could have GOP loyalists reaching for the political Glade if it gets any worse," the paper wrote last week. That whiff can be traced to the pungent Jack Abramoff ... After a stint in the movie business as president of Regency Entertainment Group (most notable for the making of the Commie-bashing Dolph Lundgren flick Red Scorpion), Abramoff went on to become a major Washington macher. He signed up as a lobbyist in 1994, catching the Gingrich wave. He started at Preston Gates Ellis & Rouvelas Meeds, which boasted of his connections to the Hill's conservative leadership. Later Greenberg Traurig poached him, let him loose to trawl for millions, and then, after his troubles began to unfold, let him go. Abramoff's defining innovation on K Street—the Avenue of the Lobbyists—has been to wear his political and business hats at the same time. He is an operator and also an ideologue. Take, for example, his success in getting part of the fortune he siphoned off the Indian gambling interests into conservative coffers. This is how the game worked: Abramoff's biggest client was the Coushatta Nation of Louisiana. The deal he delivered for the tribe was congressional support for tax exemptions and opposition to efforts by other tribes to set up rival casinos. In return, Abramoff got an estimated $32 million, a chunk of the $66 million he made all together from Indian gaming clients. The money was paid in lobbying fees and contributions to Abramoff-selected charitable organizations and nonprofit groups with strong Republican ties. For example, Abramoff helped get the chief of the Coushatta invited to a meeting with President George W. Bush in early 2001, set up by Grover Norquist, once Abramoff's executive director at the College Republicans and now Washington's pre-eminent conservative lobbyist. It was suggested that a donation to Norquist's think tank, Americans for Tax Reform, might be appreciated. Abramoff pressed the Coushattas. The $25,000 check was sent to ATR. Now this and much more is fodder for reporters. The details of the Coushatta payment to Americans for Tax Reform was reported in the Texas Observer and the Lake Charles American Press. The Knight Ridder and Gannett papers have been falling over each other to trace the huge donations made to the Capital Athletic Foundation, a charity set up by Abramoff, and to Eshkol Academy, the Jewish prep school he and his wife established in Maryland. (When I met Abramoff two years ago for lunch—a second sitting at Signatures, a restaurant that he owns on Pennsylvania Avenue—he did not want to reveal much about his clients, but he waxed on proudly about Eshkol.) The Washington Post has delivered a drip-feed of stories about the arrangements Abramoff made for DeLay to play golf in Scotland, visit South Korea, and meet Russian oil tycoons in Moscow ... Neck and neck with the journalists are federal investigators. The Justice Department and the Interior Department are looking into Abramoff's use of charitable foundations as businesses and nonprofit political groups as conduits for foreign money. The Senate Finance Committee is also investigating Abramoff's use of tax-exempt entities; the Senate Indian Affairs Committee is questioning his treatment of the
tribes
. The latter, which is chaired by Arizona Sen. John McCain, released a slew of e-mails written by Abramoff that offered a glimpse into the disdain in which he seems to hold the clients he pickpockets. "I think the key thing to remember with all these clients is that they are annoying, but that the annoying losers are the only ones which have this kind of money and part with it so quickly," he wrote in an e-mail to Michael Scanlon, his partner in working the tribes and a former aide to DeLay. Abramoff is an orthodox Jew and DeLay is a committed Christian; their relationship is rooted in their parallel faiths. They were introduced more than a decade ago by Rabbi Daniel Lapin, the South African-born radio talk-show host who established Toward Tradition, a nonprofit coalition of Jews and Christians that aims to advance the agenda of the devout. Since Abramoff's troubles began, he and DeLay have sought to distance themselves from the other. But DeLay can't shake Abramoff loose so easily—not after their trips abroad, the major role Abramoff played in DeLay's well-financed and successful run for whip, the public praise DeLay heaped on for helping bring Native Americans into the Republican fold."

U.S. black leader calls on Israel to strengthen ties with community,
By Daphna Berman, Haaretz, April 8, 2005
"A group of Israeli parliamentarians hosted a prominent African American evangelical leader at the Knesset this week, in a bid to thaw relations between the Israeli government, the Jewish community and black America. In his address to the Christian Allies Caucus, the increasingly influential lobby group that draws on membership from six political factions, Pastor Glenn Plummer said that he welcomed the attempt, but urged for a more aggressive campaign in courting African Americans and restoring the close relationship that existed during the civil-rights campaign of the 1950s and 1960s in the United States. "You have to get in our faces," Plummer, the former chair of the influential National Religious Broadcasters Association said. "Remind us: `we stood with you in the 1960s and now we need friends.' What you will get is a big embrace from black America." Plummer, who led a pilgrimage of some 25 congregants from his Detroit church, urged the Jewish community to look past the "handful" of leaders within the African American community that express vehemently anti-Semitic or anti- Israel views. "If you think that [Nation of Islam leader] Louis Farrakhan speaks for black America, then shame on you. He doesn't," Plummer admonished the Knesset members during his fire and brimstone address on Monday. "There have been a handful of voices that have painted Israel falsely and incorrectly and I am convinced that the relationship between black America and the Israelis will improve. It was Jewish people who stood with black Americans and helped establish the NAACP [National Association for the Advancement of Colored People]. In the past few years, when I've heard voices from black leaders in America paint the picture of Israel as the aggressor, as the oppressor, as the Goliath, it doesn't compute, it doesn't make sense, when you consider history." Plummer also urged the Jewish community and the Israeli government to use more actively the story of Ethiopian Jews, which he dubbed "the greatest tool you have." "When black folks think of Jews, they think of white people," he said. "The story of Ethiopian Jews is one of the most astounding stories I've ever heard and it's not known, by and large. It's a secret in America, and it's kept from the black community. If you told that story alone, you'd win three quarters of us."

[The Jewish smokescreen is the world's greatest. Here's a repost, per the above story. The Jews of Israel LOVE Blacks, but especially Jewish Blacks ... as is well known. Articles about the horrible experience Ethiopians (Falasha) are having in Israel are all over the Internet.]
Racism alive and well in Israeli society,
by Tony Janssen, Jerusalem Post, March 22, 2005

"A survey conducted on occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed Tuesday in the Knesset for the first time in Israel, demonstrated that racism is alive and well in Israeli society. According to the survey, 43% of Israelis are unwilling to marry, or have their children marry, Ethiopians. More than 50% refuse to live in the same neighborhood as Arab families, 25% would not want their children to marry religious Jews and more than 10% were averse to their children marrying Sephardim. And these numbers are only the tip of the survey's iceberg. In response to the results, Mehereta Baruch, the former Ambassador contestant and member of the Ethiopian community, said, while officiating at the Knesset ceremony, "I feel bad for these people. They have a narrow minded view. Surely just as they hold these opinions, they hold themselves back from many beautiful things in life, because they are afraid to try and afraid from something different."

[JTR contributor's note: "Holocaust complaint #5 873 238 239 ..." Our comment: Jews just don't get it. Jewish ideology is sick, and so is the society that so mindlessly accomodates their neurosis. Here below Jews want to bend the Mormon faith to Jewish will. If Mormons want to baptize me after my death, great. If Hare Krsnas want to claim me after death as one of them in their own efforts to usher me into their notion of Nirvana, I say thank you. If any Christian denomination claims my soul and aims to guide it to Heaven, thanks. Muslims want to help me get to Paradise, even by claiming me as a Muslim? All my blessings to them. Where's the maliciousness in all these people who care about my (and your) soul? So what's the Jewish problem? Jewish identity is rooted in nemeses and is not rooted in a pan-human universalism. The "Chosen" ideology insists/demands it is apart from the rest of humanity. Traditional Jewish religious convention has ZERO interest in non-Jewish welfare in an afterlife. How is it that the Judeocentric mass media always portrays Mormons -- and not arrogant, self-obsessive Jews -- as bad guys in this?]
Jews, Mormons to Meet Over Baptisms,
by Mark Thiessen, Yahoo! News, April 7, 2005
"Jewish leaders claim Mormons continue to posthumously baptize Jews and Holocaust victims, and will confront church leaders with a decade of frustration over what they call broken promises. "We have proof, and we are bringing that," said Ernest Michel, chairman of the New York-based World Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors. The Mormon church has long collected names from government documents and other records worldwide for posthumous baptisms. Church members stand in for the deceased non-Mormons, a ritual the church says is required for the dead to reach heaven. The church believes individuals' ability to choose a religion continues beyond the grave. Michel plans to show posthumous baptism records to church officials in meetings Sunday and Monday. He says the records prove tens of thousands of Jews, including some who died in Nazi concentration camps, were posthumously baptized over the past 10 years and as recently as last month. A 1995 agreement signed by Jewish leaders and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called for an immediate halt to unwanted proxy baptisms. After evidence was found in the church's massive International Genealogical Index that the baptisms for many Jews — including Anne Frank — continued, the two faiths reaffirmed the agreement in 2002. Jewish leaders in New York have bitterly complained the baptisms never stopped, and last year asked Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton to intervene. She met with Sen. Orrin Hatch, an Utah Republican and active Mormon, though neither side would discuss what was said. The church, too, declined comment Thursday. "The church won't be commenting at all on this issue for the moment. We are looking forward to discussions with our Jewish guests," spokeswoman Kim Farah said. Under the Mormon practice, most Catholic popes have been proxy baptized, as have historical figures like Ghengis Khan, Joan of Arc, Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Buddha, according to Helen Radkey, an independent genealogical researcher in Salt Lake City. However, the church directed its members after 1995 to not include for baptism the names of Jewish Holocaust victims, celebrities and people who aren't relatives. The church also assumes the closest living relative of the deceased being offered for proxy baptism has consented. Carol Skydell, also a researcher, said that didn't happen when her paternal grandparents and aunt and uncle apparently were given a baptism by proxy. She found their proxy baptism records in 2002. "Nobody asked me, nobody asked my cousin. It's ridiculous," Skydell said."

THE JTR "CHOSEN JEW" OF THE WEEK: HENRY MORGENTALER.

[JTR contributor note: "Abortionist Henry Morgentaler to receive honorary degree... The guy who got it started in Canada." Our comment: HOLOCAUST! (Or is that an anti-Jewish "hate crime" to say?]
Morgentaler to receive honorary UWO degree,
London Free Press (Canada),
"The man who led the fight for women to choose abortion, will receive an honorary degree from the University of Western Ontario. And a spokesperson for a London-based anti-abortion group says it's "unbelievable" the university will grant its highest honour to Dr. Henry Morgentaler."

Western should rescind offer to Morgentaler,
by Paul Whitehead, The University of Western Ontario, March 31, 2005
"We are privileged to work and study at Western, a very good university that our President would like to transform into a great one. Among our privileges is the right to criticize the university. I have done so infrequently since I joined in 1970. My letter to the London Free Press on March 22 questioning the advisability of granting an honorary degree to Dr. Henry Morgentaler, the person most identified with the practice of abortion in Canada, was an exception. Universities, at their best, are crucibles of thought and discovery where ideas are presented, discussed and reflected upon. On the same morning that my letter appeared, I was invited by Western News to prepare this opinion piece. Others may also have been invited; I do not know. The point is that the forum offered by this paper is available to all, critics and supporters alike. Such practices are fundamental elements of a university at its best. So, what does all this have to do with Western’s decision to grant Morgentaler an honorary degree? Much. Universities should not avoid controversy; indeed, they should welcome it. Controversy only exists, however, when there are at least two opposing views. In a university those views need to have the opportunity to be heard and challenged. The granting of honorary degrees is not an academic exercise so much as it is a public relations one. There is no opportunity for debate or rebuttal about what is said about the recipient or what the recipient says when invited to address convocation. In addition, the audience is largely captive rather than voluntary. The University decides which of our students and their parents will be witnesses to the gratuitous conferring of an honour, in the form of the University’s reputation, upon a person who symbolizes behaviour that many find abhorrent. Honorary degrees are a means of the University associating itself with the ideas, deeds and accomplishments of those selected. Those who accept the degrees are accepting being affiliated with the University, its ideals. I have asked myself, why would Western choose to engage in this public relations exercise when so many find it offensive? I do not think that it was malicious. I think that it was a fundamental error in judgment that failed to consider that two of our affiliated colleges are Catholic and that there are many students and their parents -- Catholics and non Catholics alike -- who would find this unacceptable ... I believe that there would be wisdom in Western rescinding its offer to Morgentaler. I have no optimism that Morgentaler would change his mind about accepting the offer since the honorary degree constitutes a validation of his cause. Second, I would hope that Father Edward A. Malloy, a Catholic Priest, theologian and President of Notre Dame University, one of the most prestigious Catholic universities in the world, would rethink his willingness to accept an honorary degree from the same university that professes to be proud of now affiliating itself with the champion of abortion. Third, I hope that Western will be willing to accommodate students who for moral or ethical reasons do not consider that they should participate in a convocation exercise that honours this man. Allowing students to receive their degree at one of the other convocations this Spring, would be both reasonable and compassionate. Fourth, I plan to walk in peaceful vigil in front of Alumni Hall on the morning of June 16 starting at 9 a.m. I and those who join me shall not picket. Our presence will not be to delay, deter or discourage anyone from attending the ceremonies. Rather, it is a way of indicating disapproval for the University’s choice and to let those who may be attending, but feel somewhat uneasy about it, know that they are not alone."

CANADIAN ABORTIONIST MORGENTALER'S ANNUAL REVENUE ESTIMATED AT $11 MILLION,
Life Site, October 28, 2005
"Eight Abortuaries Operating in Seven Provinces, Performed 19,026 Abortions. Canadian abortionist Henry Morgentaler has an estimated gross annual revenue of $11 million, according to research published in the Quebec paper Le Droit Saturday. The research was undertaken by the pro-life group, Respect de la Vie Outaouais. The group quoted statistics showing that in 1992-93, there were 103,244 abortions in Canada. Of this number, Mr. Henry Morgentaler, with his eight abortuaries operating in seven provinces, performed 19,026 abortions, without taking into account those performed at his Edmonton centre (numbers not available). At an average cost of $607.25 per abortion, the gross annual revenue of Mr. Morgentaler in 1992-93 was no less than $11,553,538, with, in Ontario (and perhaps elsewhere), rent ($516,461 in 1993-94) and security ($450,000 per year) fees entirely covered by taxpayers (1995-2004)."

Why Pope John Paul II Was the Best Pope Ever for Jews,
PR Web, April 9, 2005
"Prominent Rabbi and Former Chair of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council Calls Pope John Paul’s Historical Record “A ‘Theological Trifecta’ For Jews” and says, “He Was the Pope who went where no Pope Had Gone before.”
For Rabbi Irving “Yitz” Greenberg of New York City, one of the most respected scholars of Jewish thought and one of today’s most important leaders in advancing an interfaith dialog between Christians and Jews, the historical record speaks for itself: “John Paul was the best Pope for our people--ever. With him, the Jews hit, as it were, a ‘theological trifecta’: affirmation of Judaism as an ongoing valid covenant, admission of the Holocaust as a theological turning point (combined with acknowledgement that Christians need to repent because they bear some of the guilt due to spreading hateful images of Jewry) and diplomatic recognition of the State of Israel.” Rabbi Greenberg’s statements, some made public in a recent article “Pope John Paul II and the Jews” that appeared in The Forward Newspaper, echo that of other prominent Jews honoring the Pope, including Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who recently stated that “Pope John Paul II was a man of peace, a friend of the Jewish nation.” In retrospect, Rabbi Greenberg believes that John Paul II was underestimated by liberal Jews and Catholics alike. They feared that his conservatism inevitably would lead to triumphalism and denial of the dignity of other religions. “Up to his reign, a willingness to expand the post-Vatican II trends and pursue more positive attitudes toward Jews and Judaism went hand-in-hand with theological liberalism. Both policies involved critique of the tradition and acknowledgment of past failures. But John Paul cut that connection. While he bent the church to his will to check liberal trends, he extended Vatican II’s opening to Jews and Judaism.”

Subject: Statement of over 140 Catholic Groups about Leadership in the Roman Catholic Church,
We Are Church, [Press Release], April 10, 2005
"Statement of over 140 Catholic Groups about Leadership in the Roman Catholic Church. "A Pope for the Time to Come: Bishop of Rome and Universal Pastor" Over 140 Catholic groups in 27 countries from all continents challenge their faith community by calling for a model of church built on a "discipleship of equals" and a style of leadership that is collaborative, dialogic and open to fundamental change in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). The statement entitled "A Pope for the Time to Come: Bishop of Rome and Universal Pastor" was sent to Cardinals all over the world at the celebration of the pontificate in 1998 and 2003. The quest for structural and democratic reform of the Roman Catholic Church is no longer limited to Europe and North America. Networks are being built among similar-minded movements all over the world. "Papal elections and church structures are not the business of cardinals alone," says Christian Weisner, at present Chair of the international movement We are Church. "The Second Vatican Council called all of us to assume co-responsibility for the life of our church. It called our faith community to perpetual renewal. With this statement, we take that call seriously. We invite all Catholics worldwide to join us by putting forward their own thoughts and ideas. We welcome a vigorous public dialogue as we move toward a new stage in church history."

Shalom’s wife offers Prince Charles gift. Prince accepts Foreign Minister’s invitation to visit Israel, where he had been only once before to attend Yitzhak Rabin,
by Dorin Sheffer, Yedioth Aharonoth (Israel), April 8, 2005
"Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom’s wife, Judy Nir Mozes Shalom, presented Prince Charles with a gold talisman from Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri during the pope’s funeral at the Vatican Friday. She congratulated the prince on his planned marriage to Camilla Parker Bowles; the prince, in turn, thanked her for the gesture, saying he was moved by it ... “I told him I had given former U.S. President Bill Clinton a similar talisman when he was in a state of political turmoil and it helped him. I congratulated him and told him I was happy he is realizing his love after so many years.” She said she and her husband extended the prince and his future wife an invitation to visit Israel; the prince replied that he had visited the country only once before to attend former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s funeral and that he would be glad to visit again, Mozes Shalom said. “French President (Jacques) Chirac, who saw me present the prince with the talisman, told me he was also very touched by the gesture,” she said."

Appeals court upholds sex.com ruling,
by Jon Swartz, USA Today, March 31, 2005
"A federal appeals court last week may have written the final chapter to a sordid legal saga that helped establish Internet domain names as property. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Stephen Cohen's appeal of a 2001 federal court ruling that he pay businessman Gary Kremen $65 million for stealing the domain name Sex.com in 1995 and building it into a multimillion-dollar business. Kremen regained Sex.com after the 2001 ruling and operates it as part of his San Francisco online company, Grant Media. Cohen left the USA shortly after the ruling and has not paid Kremen. "In a single word, the appeals court said 'enough,' " says James Wagstaffe, one of several lawyers who has represented Kremen in the decade-long case." Cohen is a fugitive outside the country, and he doesn't have the right to appeal. I mean, there is a bench warrant for his arrest." In an e-mail Tuesday, Cohen said he plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. In phone interviews a few months earlier, the international fugitive accused of pulling off one of the Internet's biggest heists was remarkably calm. "I'm out of the (online) sex industry. It bored me, frankly," said the gravel-voiced Cohen, who says he makes a "very comfortable living" in the European casino and construction industries. "This will get extremely messy," Cohen vowed during a 45-minute call. In many ways, it already has. The case has served as a cautionary tale. Cohen, 57, who built a cyberporn empire in the late 1990s based on the Sex.com name, vows to clear his name. Kremen, 41, a boy wonder of e-commerce in the early 1990s, has bankrolled a phalanx of lawyers and private detectives in the hope of hunting down Cohen and collecting his judgment. "There's never a dull moment. (Cohen) is a genius in the way he's orchestrated this," Kremen says, nervously tapping a pen at his small San Francisco office ... When Kremen obtained registration rights to Sex.com in May 1994, he envisioned online riches. The Stanford Business School graduate started to sketch a business plan for an adult-oriented business, and the millions of online visitors (and dollars) that would pour into it. But it was just the start of a mind-numbing ordeal. In 1995, domain name-registrar Network Solutions Inc. (NSI) turned over Sex.com to Cohen, who, according to court documents, claimed in a forged letter that Kremen's company had transferred rights to him. Cohen controlled the domain name for five years. The far-flung enterprise repeatedly changed physical addresses, but its content — a den of sexually explicit sites billed as the "world's largest pornographic site" — was the cornerstone of an empire that raked in about $40 million in revenue and drew millions of visitors, court records show. "The guy has chutzpah," Kremen says, laughing and shaking his head in bemusement. Cohen steadfastly dismisses Kremen as a Johnny-come-lately opportunist who staked his claim to Sex.com more than a decade after Cohen says he secured trademark rights to the name in 1979 as part of an electronic bulletin board he operated for swingers and nudist camps ... If Stephen Michael Cohen wasn't flesh and bones, he might be the creation of a pulp-fiction writer. In 1992, he was convicted of bankruptcy fraud and served nearly four years in federal prison in Lompoc, Calif., according to criminal records. Cohen has used aliases, has been married at least four times and has created more than 20 companies, public documents show."

Creeping boycott. Caterpillar's shareholders meeting will pitch pro-Palestinians against the American Jewish Congress,
by Ran Dagoni, Globes (Israel), April 7, 2005
"The Jewish establishment in the US has begun preparing of the annual shareholders meeting of Caterpillar next week in Chicago. Caterpillar is the world’s largest manufacturer of equipment for development work. The agenda at the meeting will include a resolution calling on the company to refrain from selling bulldozers and other equipment to Israel, and to make sure that its equipment is not used to violate human rights.
Pro-Palestinian organizations that have bought shares in the company will bring the proposal up for a vote, in hopes that this will increase awareness on the part of the company’s management of what these organizations regard as the risks of doing business with Israel. Caterpillar sells military versions of its D9 bulldozer to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which has been used to destroy Palestinian houses. Delegitimizing Israel Activists in Jewish organizations in the US regard the pro-Palestinian initiative in Caterpillar as one more link in a chain of initiatives aimed at delegitimizing business with Israel, along the lines of the campaign against the apartheid regime in South Africa. These initiatives are based on a call to public investment entities, such as pension funds for government employees, to sell shares in Israeli companies, Israeli government bonds, and shares of foreign companies doing business with Israel ... The tactics devised by the American Jewish Congress are expected to serve as a model for other Jewish organizations not just national organizations with tens of thousands of members, but also synagogues and regional and local Jewish fellowship organizations. In the effort to defeat the pro-Palestinian initiative in Caterpillar, the American Jewish Congress has bought Caterpillar shares. It will take advantage of the platform provided by those shares at the shareholders meeting to call on the company’s management not to surrender to pressure. It appears that the American Jewish Congress will propose a counter resolution calling on shareholders to oppose the termination of the company’s commercial relations with Israel. Caterpillar-free region The number of pro-Palestinian shareholders in Caterpillar is unknown, but is probably negligible, and designed solely to provide them with a platform at the company shareholders meeting. The campaign received a significant boost from a lawsuit filed against the company by the family of Rachel Corrie, a pro-Palestinian volunteer from the US who was killed in March 2003 by an IDF Caterpillar bulldozer while trying to prevent the destruction of a Palestinian house in the territories. Liat Weingart, a co-director of Jewish Voice for Peace, one of the organizations promoting the pro-Palestinian initiative in Caterpillar, said, “When shareholders initially brought this issue to Caterpillar years ago, before we even filed the resolution, we told the company, ‘you’re putting yourself at risk for a lawsuit.’ The lawsuit adds fuel to the fire of the argument that Caterpillar is working against its own best interests by not responding in any kind of substantive way when shareholders have requested that they investigate the matter.” Another development working in favor of the pro-Palestinian resolution is a vote in Limerick, Ireland on whether to declare the city a “Caterpillar-free area,” in protest against the company’s sale of heavy equipment to Israel. The resolution forbids the municipality to use equipment manufactured by Caterpillar in any public space in the city, and calls on all labor unions in the city to avoid using such equipment. If the resolution is approved, Limerick will be the first city in the world to be declared “Caterpillar-free.” While the financial significance of such a measure is negligible, it could have symbolic significance, and is liable to influence other cities to adopt similar resolutions. Up until now, Caterpillar’s management has resolutely opposed any attempt to force it to stop doing business with Israel."

Fans face ticket hike as United fight bid,
by Chris Barry, Manchester News (UK), March 29, 2005
"The cost of being a true Manchester United fan could be set to soar as the club prepares to defend itself against Malcolm Glazer's £800m takeover bid. Fans are bracing themselves for an expected 10 per cent hike in ticket prices, which could raise as much as £5m at a time when other income streams are drying up. Last week, United unveiled a 54 per cent fall in profits as income from TV deals and prize money fell. A spokesman said: "No decision has been taken regarding next season's ticket prices. We hope to present something to a fans forum this week." But an Old Trafford source said prices would be going up. "Revenues are under pressure and it just remains to be seen by how much. "Last year ticket prices went up by around £1 per game. One thing we are looking at though, is to increase prices for the better seats more sharply." Shareholders United, the pressure group aiming to see off the Glazer bid, said it was sure whatever hike the club announced, it would be dwarfed by what the American would do.
Spokesman Oliver Houston said: " "Malcolm Glazer is a serial raiser of ticket prices, recently by as much as 60 per cent at Tampa Bay. He will need to raise prices to pay the interest on the loans he will take out to buy the club." Glazer's bid team are working on a revised business plan in a bid to secure a recommendation from the club's board. Last week the club said Glazer's bid was not in the best interests of the company because of the high level of debt involved. The success of any bid depends on United's top shareholders, the Irish race horse tycoons John Magnier and JP McManus."

Texas oilman seeks gusher from God in Israel. Zion Oil & Gas founder using Bible to find oil,
MSNBC, April 6, 2005
"A Texas oilman is using his Bible as a guide to finding oil in the Holy Land. John Brown, a born-again Christian and founder of Zion Oil & Gas of Dallas, can quote chapter and verse about his latest drilling venture in Israel, where his company has an oil and gas exploration license covering 96,000 acres. “Most blessed of sons be Asher. Let him be favored by his brothers and let him dip his foot in oil,” Brown quotes from Moses’s blessing to one of the 12 Tribes of Israel in Deuteronomy 33:24. Standing next to a 177-foot derrick at Kibbutz Maanit in northern Israel, Brown said the passage indicated there is oil lying beneath the biblical territory of the Tribe of Asher, where the agricultural community is located. Geological surveys and an attempt by an Israeli-based company to find oil at the same site 10 years ago, a venture he said was abandoned for lack of funds, led Brown to pick the spot where new drilling will begin this week. Brown said he raised money for “Project Joseph” from fellow evangelical Christians in the United States. “From the investment standpoint, they certainly hope to have a return of the money,” he said. “But the basis of it is Genesis, chapter 12.” In that passage, God promises to shower blessings on those who bless the “great nation” sired by the Hebrew patriarch Abraham."

The true "victims" in this game are those who have lost the capacity to reason and moralize beyond the predigested box. The omnipresent institutionalized password to self-advancement has become chanting "Poor Jews!" even as the ideology of Judeocentrism rules every corner of our narrowing lives.]
Reliving the horror of the Holocaust,
by Sgt. Chuck Wagner, DC Military, April 8, 2005
"A busload of Soldiers and employees from the Fort Myer Military Community took an unsettling tour of a Washington building this week. It wasn't that they saw something they didn't expect, only that they saw it with undiluted impact. "You forget what has happened in the past. The past that made the future what it is right now. In some aspects -- on a small scale -- some of it is still around. Racism for example," said Spc. Tess Ovalle of the Fort Myer Military Police company after exiting the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. "It is a rude awakening." Ovalle and about 25 others took self-guided tours among four floors of the museum Tuesday. Another group attended Thursday. In the dark exhibit rooms, large picture prints and flickering video monitors fill the eye with stark, hard, brutal images of the institutionalized killing of six million European Jews under Germany's Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist party."

[Yay! Another Schindler's List? It's time for another Holocaust movie to further socialize the ("righteous") masses to jump like poodles to Jewish/Zionist dictate!]
Israel honours officer who was 'better than Schindler',
by Andrew Buncombe, Independent (UK), April 8, 2005
"For 60 years the life-saving actions of Major Karl Plagge have gone unrecognised - an all but forgotten footnote to one of mankind's darkest chapters. His behaviour and the personal risks he took were remembered only by those who would otherwise have been killed. Now, following years of investigation by the son of one of the 300 Jews saved from the Nazis by the German officer, Mr Plagge will be posthumously honoured next week at a ceremony in Jerusalem by Yad Vashem, the authority created by the Israeli government to remember the Holocaust. His name will be added to a list that includes the likes of Oscar Schindler, those "righteous gentiles" who risked their "lives, freedom or safety" to save Jews from death."

Speaker criticizes America's Holocaust reporting,
by Josh Byrne, The Signpost (Weber State University, Utah), April 8, 2005
"One of the most tragic and horrific events in human history is being commemorated at Weber State University this month. The focus of the 11th Annual Holocaust Commemoration at WSU is (Un)covering Genocide: How the Media Cover Mass Killings. This year's session began with a speech in the Wildcat Theatre by Benyamin Korn, associate director of the David S. Wyman Institute of Holocaust Studies in Pennsylvania. "The Holocaust is one of the issues that seems to become more important the further we get away from it," Korn said."
