Jerusalem court sentences convicted child rapist to 16 years in prison,
By Yuval Yoaz, Haaretz (Israel), April 6, 2005
"The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court sentenced 52-year-old Shimon Ben-Tov to 16 years in prison Wednesday, and an additional 1.5 years suspended, for sexually assaulting minors on several occasions between 1998 and 2004. On two separate occasions, the Jerusalem resident persuaded a 10-year-old and 12-year-old child to come to his home and play computer games, during which he began fondling their genitalia and even persuaded them to perform oral sex on him. He also was convicted of sodomizing children in several instances while video taping them, and attempting to earn a profit by publishing the videos on the internet."
[The above article is rather understated. Here's an older one that addresses the disgusting scope of Ben-Tov's crimes:]
Kiryat Arba man held in one of `worst ever pedophilia cases',
Jewish Whistle Blower (originally from Haaretz - Israel), September 2, 2004
"A guard from Kiryat Arba near Hebron has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out indecent acts on children in different parts of the country. The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court yesterday remanded him in custody for eight days. Shimon Ben-Tov, aged 51, is also suspected of recording the acts on video and computer and of taking still pictures of himself with the victims. Police called it is one of the most shocking incidents of pedophilia they have uncovered ... Police who searched Ben-Tov's home in Kiryat Arba were amazed to find an enormous collection of pedophilia - 106 video tapes, a computer and dozens of CD-roms showing sexual acts with children, and numerous photos and negatives. In all of these, the guard is photographed with dozens of children aged 11-15 on whom he is performing indecent acts or whom he is sodomizing ... In the past few years, Ben-Tov worked as a guard in various schools in Ashdod and Givat Ze'ev. He met young boys and invited them to his home, ostensibly to view pornographic films. Police say that, judging by the pictures, dozens of children fell victim to the guard, who photographed them himself and with the aid of a third party who has not yet been arrested ... Meanwhile, a Tel Aviv magistrate yesterday extended the remand of another suspected pedophile, 43-year-old Avraham Papo of Bnei Braq, by six days. He is accused of committing acts of sodomy against at least six children, aged 10-14."
Chief rabbi Metzger quizzed at police station,
by Jonathan Lis, Haaretz (Israel), April 7, 2005
"Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yonah Metzger was interrogated by police at the National Fraud Squad offices in Bat Yam 10 days ago on suspicion that he received tens of thousands of shekels worth of benefits from Jerusalem's David Citadel Hotel in Jerusalem, where he has stayed with his family on the holidays in recent years. This is the first time a chief rabbi in Israel has been questioned in a police station. Police have already questioned Metzger in his office regarding the affair. Police sources said that Metzger was cooperative and answered questions that needed to be clarified before the investigation's completion. Attorney General Menachem Mazuz approved the unprecedented interrogation on the basis of information already gathered by police."
Hacker cracks bank's computer code,
By DAVID RUDGE, Jerusalem Post, April 6, 2005
"A hacker who managed to break into the computer network of the Postal Bank and transfer large sums of money to the accounts of co-conspirators was sentenced to 16 months in prison by the Haifa magistrate's court on Wednesday. David Sternberg, 24, of Haifa, was caught in January last year shortly after setting up his sophisticated computer "sting" operation that involved six collaborators who were also arrested. Sternberg apparently lived in the US for a while and was allegedly responsible for causing the collpase at the time of the "E-Bay" web site and other offenses that, according to police here, brought him to the attention of the FBI. He returned to Israel, but it was not long before he was once again up to his tricks - this timeconcentrating on using the computer network of the Postal Bank to try and make some easy money. It started with a mysterious break-in at the Postal Bank branch office in the exclusive Dania housing district of Haifa. Bank officials reported the apparent burglarly but found that nothing had been stolen and the case was closed. In fact, Sternberg perhaps accompanied by an accomplice, had simply opened the communications box in the bank and connected a remote controlled "access point" device to the computer network. "This gave him instant access to all of the bank's accounts and transactions nationwide," Supt. Herby Frimet of the Northern Region White Collar Fraud Squad told the Jerusalem Post on Wednesday. "The device itself could barely be seen and would not mean anything to anyone except an expert in the field, which is eventually what happened."
The Middleman. A Special Investigation. Asher Karni was "a genius" in South Africa's military electronics trade. Now he's in jail in Brooklyn, accused of orchestrating a nuclear black market deal,
By Mark Schapiro, Mother Jones, March 30, 2005
"This story, which will appear in the May/June issue of Mother Jones magazine, comes out of an investigation jointly sponsored by Mother Jones, the Center for Investigative Reporting and the PBS series FRONTLINE/World ... [Asher Karni is] a 50-year-old, Hungarian-born Israeli and South African businessman ... As he stepped off the plane with his wife and a teenage daughter at Denver International Airport, U.S. Customs agents arrested him on charges of violating American export laws. Specifically, he was accused of exporting, without the proper license, quantities of a device known as a triggered spark gap. Triggered spark gaps are unremarkable in appearance - each is a cylinder set atop a four-inch-square black box - and small enough to be put in the pocket of a raincoat. They emit an intense electrical pulse whose timing and duration are controlled to the microsecond. Hospitals use the devices to power lithotripters, which deliver an electrical punch that pounds kidney stones to dust so they can be expelled from the body. That, however, is not their only function. Installed into an enriched uranium casing, a triggered spark gap can ignite a nuclear explosion. Karni, according to the Justice Department, was in the middle of a deal exporting 200 of the devices to a buyer who might use them for just such a purpose. The buyer was Humayun Khan, an Islamabad businessman with close ties to PakistanÕs military and who has been linked by U.S. government officals to militant Islamic groups, some of which are suspected to be arming fighters in the Kashmiri conflict. According to Justice Department spokesman Channing Phillips, the U.S. government is now pursuing leads "in several countries" as it attempts to track the extent and nature of Karni's business dealings. But in March, anonymous law enforcement officials complained to the Los Angeles Times that the State Department -- afraid of offending Pakistan, its partner in the war on terror -- had blocked agents from the Commerce and Homeland Security departments from pursuing those leads and going to Pakistan to interview Khan and others. A federal judge sealed records in the Karni case last September. But legal documents obtained before then indicate that his transactions reached, tentaclelike, in two directions from the headquarters of his company, Top-Cape Technologies. One tentacle extended from Cape Town through a broker in Secaucus, New Jersey, to the Salem, Massachusetts, laboratories of PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a high-technology firm that is one of the world's few manufacturers of triggered spark gaps. The other tentacle extended from Cape Town through Dubai to Islamabad, into the recesses of one of the worldÕs most dangerous black markets, the international traffic in "dual-use" nuclear technology ... Aside from actual uranium and other radioactive material, triggered spark gaps -- number 2,641 on the control list -- are among the most tightly restricted items in the world ... Ultimately, Karni was tripped up not by the system, but by an odd bit of serendipity: a mysterious individual who, starting in the summer of 2003, guided investigators along Karni's labyrinthine trail. The government's complaint against Karni is peppered with references to the anonymous source in South Africa who clued them in to the possible diversion of U.S. origin equipment ... The deal that allegedly put Karni's fingerprints on Pakistan's nuclear ambitions was pieced together in a mansion in the lush Cape Town neighborhood of Sea Point. The tree-lined enclave -- locally referred to, not always fondly, as "Millionaires' Row" -- is among the most exclusive in the city. The mansion, rising three stories behind a cream-colored stucco wall on Ocean View Drive, belongs to Asher Karni. For almost two decades, Karni had thrived in Cape Town. In 1985, he resigned his major's commission with the Israeli army and emigrated to South Africa to work for a Jewish charity serving the Orthodox community in Cape Town. Karni's first four years in the country were spent educating Jewish youth and encouraging them to relocate to Israel, according to an article the Israeli newspaper Haaaretz published shortly after his arrest. He became a respected member of the Beit Midrash congregation, teaching Torah at the synagogue and conducting services when Rabbi Jonathan Altman was out of town. "He is a thoroughly honest, hardworking and responsible person," South Africa's chief rabbi, C.K. Harris, wrote to the court after Karni's arrest. He enjoys a very good reputation in the Cape Town community, both Jewish and general." In 1989, Karni left his ofÞcial religious duties to take a job with Eagle Technology, a firm owned and run by one of Cape Town's leading families, Alan and Diana Bearman and their son, Nathan. With an M.B.A. from an Israeli university, and his military background, Karni was a good man for the job. Eagle Technology has a storefront off Green Market Square in downtown Cape Town, where it sells to the public high-tech spying devices like surveillance video systems and recording machines; an adjacent outlet, Eagle Appliances, sells espresso makers, electric radiators, and other consumer electronics. But the real action goes on upstairs, where Eagle plies a more serious trade. It specializes in obtaining sophisticated electronic, optical, and other sensitive equipment, originally for the South African military during the long years of the countryÕs apartheid government, and now for a wide variety of clients in the "new" South Africa. These items became Karni's specialty. When Karni joined the company, South Africa's apartheid government was operating under severe international sanctions, making the country a smugglers' paradise. Everything from rifles to ammunition to missile casings had to be obtained on the black market. Importers learned the circumlocutions necessary to evade foreign prohibitions on exports to South Africa. "We had a government then of vipers," says Michael Bagraim, a Cape Town attorney who would play a large role in Karni's fate, "and companies did what they had to in order to obtain equipment for the military." Eagle had no connection to the country's illicit nuclear program; its work was exclusively for the conventional armed forces. But with the blanket sanctions then in place, buying even conventional ordnance required guile. "Anyone procuring those kinds of technologies would have had to be familiar with all kinds of clandestine sources and networks," says Jean du Preez, who served on South AfricaÕs Nonproliferation Council in the 1990s and is currently director of the International Organizations and Nonproliferation Program at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Then, in 1991, Nelson Mandela was released from prison on Robben Island and Eagle and similar companies found their universe turned upside down. South Africa held its Þrst democratic elections in 1994 and, with Mandela as president, joined the world community. International sanctions were lifted. Eagle Technology, accustomed to life in the shadows, was suddenly operating in the open, governed by laws of transparency that would be the envy of any Western democracy ... Michael Bagraim is sturdily built, articulate, and gregarious; he has the wiliness of a lawyer, and the outgoing ease of a politician == which he is, in a way. As chairman of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, the largest Jewish organization in the country, he represents the community's political, economic, and cultural interests in Parliament. He's also one of the country's leading practitioners of labor law, representing some of South Africa's most prominent companies ... In the summer of 2003, Karni, judging from his correspondence, was engaged in arranging an elaborate chain of transactions to move a large number of triggers to Pakistan."
[JTR contributor's note: "By now anyone with eyes and ears knows that Jews are disproportionately responsible for financial frauds, including counterfeiting. What is particularly galling in this case is the blatant attempt by the editors of Rupert Murdoch's NY Post to deceive readers into thinking that the criminals were not Jewish. Note the names of the criminal family -- Jacob, Edward, and Pinkass. These are real Uzbeks? No, they are Jews whose family has passed through Russia and Uzbekistan before coming to America to ply their evil trade, and they were caught passing millions of counterfeit dollars made by you-know-who. The NY Post is part of the fraud. By calling Jewish criminals "Russians," "Americans," "Poles," "Brits," and now even "Uzbeks" the NY Post is actively deceiving its readers in the vain attempt to prevent us from drawing reasonable inferences about which small ethnic group commits most frauds."]
Funny Money Busts,
by William J. Gorta, New York Post, April 7, 2005 --
"A family of Uzbek immigrants was collared yesterday for funneling nearly $10 million in funny money through their Queens video store, police said. Yakub Yusupov, 44, and his sons Eduard, 23, and Pinchas, 19, were nabbed yesterday at their home on 167th Street in Fresh Meadows. Officials said the trio sold counterfeit $100 bills out of New Releases Video Coming Attractions, their film-rental store on Parsons Boulevard in Jamaica, over the last six years. More than $7 million of the bogus greenbacks have been seized but an estimated $2.5 million is still in circulation, authorities said ... The probe into the Yusupovs, which began in November 2003, grew out of an investigation into bootleg DVDs and CDs, cops said. A source in that inquiry alerted detectives from the NYPD's Intelligence Division to the sale of the counterfeit currency at the Yusupov family's video store ... Sources close to investigation said the quality of the forged bills was so good that the Yusupovs were allegedly able to sell them for 50 cents on the dollar — well above the standard 25 to 30 cents on a dollar for counterfeit money. The Yusupovs also dumped a lot of the fake cash in Atlantic City casinos, the sources said ... Police said the suspects had at least four prior arrests among them — one charge of statutory rape and three charges of possession of a forged instrument."
Phony rabbi ordered to pay more than $30,000,
By STEVE LIEBERMAN, The Journal News, April 5, 2005
"A Clarkstown cantor who performed thousands of weddings was sentenced yesterday to repay more than $30,000 to dozens of people who believed they were being married by a rabbi. Jerry Heller, 72, who worked for decades in New York and New Jersey, maintained after court that he had legally married thousands of couples. He declined to comment during the sentencing. "As far as I am concerned, every cantor in the United States is entitled to marry couples," Heller said. "I never performed a wedding that in my mind I thought was illegal. There have been thousands of marriages." A cantor is a singer at Jewish religious services. Heller pleaded guilty in December to first-degree scheme to defraud for performing 35 marriages between 1998 and 2002. He also signed marriage documents that certified he was a rabbi."
[JTR contributor's note: "Murdoch versus Israel Shamir."Our comment: Here below is the usual Jewish smear job: lies, fabrications, half-truths, exaggerations, etc. "Anti-semite" Israel Shamir does great work. He was born "Jewish" but rejects that "birthright" for all the obvious moral reasons. Such a blasphemer is a threat to the censorial Jewish Thought Police, and they want to ostracize him -- and punish anyone who dares to even consider his ideas. Lord Ahmed's unwelcome guest. The Labour peer must admit his error in inviting an extreme anti-Semite to air his views,
by Stephen Pollard, Times (UK), 7 Apr 2005
"A TERM has returned to the lexicon of political debate in recent months; a term for which, in a decent world, we should have no need. That term is “anti-Semitism”. In January, Labour produced two posters. One depicted Michael Howard as a Shylock or Fagin caricature. The other pasted the faces of Mr Howard and Oliver Letwin on to pigs’ bodies. In February, figures showed that anti-Semitic attacks rose to record levels in 2004 — 42 per cent higher than in 2003. Add to this Ken Livingstone’s comparison of a Jewish reporter to a concentration camp guard, and the odour of anti-Semitism is clearly with us once more. But there is a more astonishing incident which has yet to receive any coverage. Lord Ahmed, who has been a Labour life peer since 1998, is the first Muslim to have been so honoured. His presence in the House of Lords is symbolically important. His behaviour matters, both in the message it sends to his fellow Muslims and in what it represents to the rest of us. In May, Lord Ahmed called — at considerable personal risk — for Islamic militants such as Abu Hamza and Omar Bakri to be deported. The risk was real: a fatwa was immediately issued against him. But his behaviour has not always been so admirable. On February 23, Lord Ahmed hosted a book launch in the House of Lords for a man going by the name of Israel Shamir. “Israel Shamir” is, in fact, a Swedish-domiciled anti-Semite also known as Jöran Jermas. The gist of Shamir/Jermas’s speech at the meeting can be gleaned from its title, “Jews and the Empire”. It included observations such as: “All the [political] parties are Zionist-infiltrated.” “Your newspapers belong to Zionists . . . Jews indeed own, control and edit a big share of mass media, this mainstay of Imperial thinking.” “In the Middle East we have just one reason for wars, terror and trouble — and that is Jewish supremacy drive . . . in Iraq, the US and its British dependency continue the same old fight for ensuring Jewish supremacy in the Middle East.” “The Jews like an Empire . . . This love of Empire explains the easiness Jews change their allegiance . . . Simple minds call it ‘treacherous behaviour’, but it is actually love of Empire per se.” “Now, there is a large and thriving Muslim community in England . . . they are now on the side of freedom, against the Empire, and they are not afraid of enforcers of Judaic values, Jewish or Gentile. This community is very important in order to turn the tide.” Why would Lord Ahmed have hosted such a man in the Lords? It is, of course, possible that Lord Ahmed had no idea that Shamir/Jermas was a rabid anti-Semite. Yet it takes only a quick Google to discover his views and background. He has worked for Zavtra, Russia’s most anti-Semitic publication, and is allied with the Vanguard News Network, set up by an American, Alex Linder — a man so extreme that he was even ostracised by the US neo-Nazi National Alliance. Indeed, Shamir/Jermas’s own website proudly reprints his views: “Jews asked God to kill, destroy, humiliate, exterminate, defame, starve, impale Christians, to usher in Divine Vengeance and to cover God’s mantle with blood of goyim . . . ” “The Ashkenazi Jews believed that spilled Jewish blood has a magic effect of calling down Divine Vengeance on the heads of the Gentiles . . . The picture of Jews slaughtering children for cultic reasons exerted huge impact on the Christian peoples of Europe.” On and on it goes ... Lord Ahmed invited a known anti-Semite to speak in the House of Lords, has not uttered a word of criticism since and remains a Labour peer. Before hearing from Lord Ahmed, I also wrote to Lord Grocott, the Labour Chief Whip in the Lords. I asked him if, given Lord Ahmed’s apparent lack of contrition, Lord Grocott considered it appropriate that Lord Ahmed should still hold the Labour whip? No reply. All Lord Ahmed need do to destroy the notion that he supports Shamir/Jermas’s views is to admit that he made a mistake in inviting him, and to condemn his words."

Ahenakew says he still believes Jews started Second World War,
by Tim Cook, Yahoo! News, April 5, 2005
"David Ahenakew told his hate trial Tuesday that he still believes Jews were the cause of the Second World War and he doesn't think there is anything wrong with his opinion. The former head of the Assembly of First Nations and member of the Order of Canada is charged under the Criminal Code with wilfully promoting hatred against an identifiable group after he made public his opinions in a speech to a Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations' conference more than two years ago. "I didn't think I said anything wrong during my speech," Ahenakew testified under cross-examination by Crown prosecutor Brent Klause. Klause pointed to the interview Ahenakew had with a reporter right after the speech where he called the Jews a "disease" and said Hitler was justified when he "fried six million of those guys." "So you stand by your comments?" Klause asked. "Yeah," Ahenakew replied. Ahenakew, 71, testified it was the Germans who told him about the Jews when he served overseas in the military. He joined the military in 1951. His testimony was the culmination of a day filled with tension. Agitated members of the public gallery at points yelled "racist" as Klause asked questions of Ahenakew in front of Judge Marty Irwin [Jewish?] , who is hearing the case without a jury. Ahenakew's defence lawyer, Doug Christie, in turn attacked the media for its reporting on the case. The jeers against Klause came when he suggested to Ahenakew: "You are not an unsophisticated individual from some remote northern band." Irwin asked Klause to re-phrase the question, which he did, but at the morning break he was approached by at least one individual who swore at him and told him he was offended by the remark ... Ahenakew was on the stand Tuesday in support of his lawyer's application to have tapes of both the reporter's interview and his speech thrown out as evidence. Christie had argued both were private conversations and can't be used in the prosecution of a hate crime. But Irwin disagreed, saying Ahenakew knew or should have known that his speech to about 300 people and his remarks to a reporter could end up being published. "Reporters report," Irwin said. "It's not for the court to pass judgment on the journalistic ethics of the media." Outside the courtroom, Christie told reporters that the ruling makes the media a tool of a police state. "This is a setback for anybody who doesn't want to see the media get a licence to promote hatred if they can find someone in a moment of passion to quote," Christie said. "You are now capable of being used to, not only promote hatred with impunity, but to gather evidence against people in private conversations to be used against them indiscriminately. I wouldn't want to be in your position." Irwin listened to the both the tape of Ahenakew's speech, made by the FSIN, and the tape of his comments to the reporter, James Parker of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, in deciding the merits of Christie's application. "How do you get rid of a disease like that, that's going to take over, that's going to dominate?" Ahenakew told Parker. "The Jews damn near owned all of Germany prior to the war. That's how Hitler came in. He was going to make damn sure that the Jews didn't take over Germany or Europe. "That's why he fried six million of those guys, you know. Jews would have owned the God damned world. And look what they're doing. They're killing people in Arab countries." Ahenakew testified that he believes he was goaded into making his remarks by Parker and called their conversation a confrontation rather than an interview. Parker has already testified that he heard Ahenakew mention the Jews in his speech and was seeking clarification when he approached him. Ahenakew called Parker's subsequent story a "blatant distortion" but offered little explanation as to why he thinks that. "What it says to me is they (the media) are out to destroy," Ahenakew said."
Eradicate racism in the stands.
Haaretz - Editorial (Israel), April 8, 2005
"Betar Jerusalem's fans showed this week that Israeli society - or at least part of it - is severely ill, infected with blatant, contemptible racism. At a soccer game between Betar and Bnai Sakhnin, some Betar fans did not hold back racist curses against Abbas Suan, Bnai Sakhnin's midfielder. They didn't like the fact that an Arab Israeli scored the equalizing goal against Ireland, thus leaving Israel still in the race for the World Cup. They did not like the fact that the Arab team has twice defeated Betar Jerusalem. "You can go crazy over the fact that Arabs beat us," said one of the fans, repeating the same kind of contemptible racist remarks made for generations about Jews in the countries where they were in the minority. Betar's management tried vainly to dignify the situation when they presented Suan a bouquet of flowers before the start of Monday's game, but the hysterical crowd responsed with an enormous chorus of whistles and boos, and roared, cursed, and booed Suan and all Arabs everywhere throughout the entire game. A report by the New Israel Fund says that Betar Jerusalem fans lead the league on the racism and violence index, and that at one game between Betar and Bnai Sakhnin there was unusually poisonous chanting of slogans like "Baruch Goldstein loves you all" and "Kahane lives." These expressions of racism continue to be heard, without an appropriate public response or appropriate police response. If the fans of a team in the U.S. or Europe were to shout similar chants against Jewish players, the uproar would be enormous: Israel would demand immediate apologies and action to be taken at the highest levels, and politicians would launch sharp condemnations. But in Israel, the most terrible things get said in public about Arabs and the prime minister is silent. The president is silent. The speaker of the Knesset is silent. And the police do nothing, even though there are suitable laws for dealing with the matter. Betar Jerusalem's rabble (and it is only some of the fans of the team) gives Israeli football, and through it, the State of Israel, a disgustingly racist character, so it is impossible this time to make do as usual with a disciplinary move against the team. This is dangerous racism that harms the very fabric of life that most of the public is trying to create between Jews and Arabs, and it must be eradicated. The Football Association must impose heavy fines on the team, to force its management to do something. A heavy, deterrent punishment, for example, would be docking league points from the team, thus threatening Betar's Premier League survival. The team's management must install cameras in the stands, and fill the stands with guards whose job would be to identify the rabble and prevent them from getting into the stadium. The police must investigate the rioters and recommend criminal prosecution. If all this is done quickly and efficiently, it would be a clear message to the racist rioters that the vast majority of the Israeli public is disgusted by them and their racism."
Teaching Ze'evi's call for the mass expulsion of Arabs in schools, [also in Hebrew]
By Yehuda Golan, Arabs Against Discrimination (from NRG, March 14, 2005
"The Knesset Education Committee gave preliminary approval to a bill that would allow the teaching of the beliefs of assassinated minister Rehavam Ze'evi, particularly the controversial part involving the collective transfer of Palestinians. At the conclusion of a stormy session today, the Education Committee gave preliminary approval to a bill to include the legacy of late Minister Rehavam Ze'evi in the Ministry of Education's academic curriculum. This legacy, which will be taught in schools across the nation, includes Ze'evi's controversial belief calling for the mass transfer of the Palestinians. Ze'evi was assassinated by a Palestinian in the Hyatt Hotel in Jerusalem. But the bill was not approved easily. There was much anger in the Education Committee with the approval of the bill, proposed by MK Arieh Eldad and MK Uri Ariel, both members of the Nationalist Union. The bill was supported by MKs Uri Ariel (Nationalist Union), Gilad Erdan (Likud), Yitzhak Cohen (Shas), Yuli Edelstein (Likud), Gila Finkelstein (National Religious Party), and Inbal Gavriely (Likud). It was opposed by MKs Yossi Sarid (Yachad), Yuli Tamir (Labor), and Meli Polishook-Bloch (Shinui). “This is an insult to the Israeli Knesset, and it is scandalous,” Tamir commented. “With this bill, the state of Israel has virtually declared that transfer is an official policy.” Tamir attempted to introduce an amendment to the bill that would exclude Ze'evi's legacy of transfer from the curriculum, but most members of the committee opposed the amendment. With the committee's approval, the bill will be sent to the Knesset for a preliminary reading. Opposition to the bill was not limited to the three committee members — the government also announced its opposition."

Canadian Edward Bronfman dies; was shy businessman, philanthropist,
By Balint Molnar, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, April 5, 2005
"Edward Bronfman, the publicity-shy businessman who died Monday at 77, was not only one of Canada’s most successful moguls but also one of the country’s leading philanthropists. Bronfman was born into a family whose name long has been synonymous with great wealth and business success in Canada. Descendants of a Russian immigrant tobacco farmer, Ekiel Bronfman, members of the Bronfman family own and control huge financial empires that grew out of the profits of the family liquor business, which boomed from 1920 to 1933, the Prohibition era in the United States. Edward Bronfman’s father, Allan, was the brother of Samuel Bronfman, the founder of the Seagram liquor company, which over the decades grew into one of the world’s largest distilling firms. In the 1960s, however, Edward Bronfman and his brother Peter were forced out of Seagram by their uncle, Samuel, and their cousins, Charles and Edgar, to whom they sold their shares of the company after a nasty public feud. Subsequently, the brothers built up their own business empire through the holding company Edper — a combination of their names, Edward and Peter — which at its peak was worth an estimated $100 billion and controlled a dizzying array of companies, including the brewer Labatt, the insurance broker London Life, the real estate company Royal LePage and the mining giant Noranda. In 1987, Edper indirectly controlled Canada’s largest forestry company and largest trust company, and in 1992 accounted for 10 percent of the Toronto Stock Exchange’s value. The brothers also owned the Montreal Canadiens hockey club between 1971 and 1978, a period in which the team won the coveted Stanley Cup four times. Bronfman also helped Israel’s own nascent hockey scene through his support for the building of the Canada Centre, a recreation complex in Metulla, in northern Israel, that boasts an the country’s only Olympic-sized ice rink. The brothers divested themselves of their Edper interests in 1995, and Edward Bronfman became president of Maured Ltd and a director of Ranger Oil Ltd and Astral Communications Inc. ... Bernie Farber, the head of the Canadian Jewish Congress, told the Canadian Press wire service that Bronfman was one of the Jewish community’s most cherished philanthropists."
Who is Bernard Koucher?

Yes, Kouchner lied...,
By MICHEL COLLON, Michael Collon - Mailing List, April 2005
"The co-author of one of the biggest media lies of the nineties has just confessed. A good example for the future because ways of manipulations are always the same... Flash-back. Summer 92, war in Bosnia. Bernard Kouchner and his "doctors of the world" (Médecins du monde) broadcasted into the press and on the walls in Paris an advertisement, outstanding and expensive. The photograph showed "prisoners" of a Serbian camp in Bosnia. Behind barbed wires, Kouchner sticking the picture of a watchtower from Auschwitz. His text blamed Serbians for "mass executions". Was it right or wrong? Wrong, admits Kouchner twelve years later. His latest book, the warriors for peace, recounts an interview with Izetbegovic (the Muslim nationalist leader in authority at the time of Sarajevo), in his deathbed:
-Kouchner: those places were awful, but they didn't exterminate consistently. Did
you know about that?
- Izetbegovic: Yes. The assertion was false. There were no extermination camps even if those places were terrible. I thought that my revelation would bring faster
bombings.
This media lie did actually change the opinion towards the support for bombings. All the Western press broadcasted it massively but the latest rectification was not communicated. The public could actually not be informed that they get rolled. The half-confession of Kouchner and this media silence makes us asking some important questions:
1. Did Kouchner know all about it previously?
Answer: Yes. Since 1993, a journalist from France 2 channel, Jacques Merlino, revealed the deception in his book with an eloquent title "All the truths are not good to say". He was interviewing the director of Ruder Finn, US agent for public relations. The latter, very proud to tell that his campaign on" extermination camps" was just fake :
- "We got around three big Jewish organisations: B'nai B'rith, American Jewish Committee et American Jewish Congress. And right away, we managed to make the link between Serbians and Nazis concerning the public opinion. The case was complex, nobody understood what was going on in Yugoslavia, but bolt upright it was not really difficult to formulate who was the nice and the good people.
- By lying, points out the journalist! Answer: We are professionals. We are not paid to give moral lessons."

THE OTHER FACE OF TARIQ RAMADAN,
by BERNARD–HENRI LÉVY, Moby Lives
"Editor's note: The refusal of the U.S. State Department to allow Islamic scholar and writer Tariq Ramadan to enter the country to accept a position at Notre Dame University has made him a cause celebre amongst many American academics. (See, for example, this recent front page New York Times story.) But one aspect of Ramadan's career has not gotten much attention here — the charges of anti–Semitism leveled against him in Europe. The charges grew particularly heated late last fall when an article by Ramadan attacking France's leading Jewish intellectuals appeared on the Internet. One of those attacked was Melville House author Bernard–Henri Lévy, who is also the founder of SOS Racisme, an organization dedicated to fighting racism against African and Islamic immigrants to France. MobyLives asked him for his response to Ramadan's charges.
It had been circulating on the Internet for several days, in the context of the preparation talks for the European Social Forum that will be held in Paris and St. Denis in November, 2003 — in the context, that is, of the forum for open and free debate of the larger anti–globalist sphere—a stunning text by Tariq Ramadan, the Genevan imam who, in the last several years, has become one of the spokesmen for the most hardline European Islamists. There one learns, for example, that the French intellectuals — Bernard Kouchner, André Glucksmann, Pascal Bruckner—who have supported the American war in Iraq, have dones so only as a function of "Israeli interests." One discovers that the writer and editorialist Alexandre Adler, known to readers of Le Monde and Le Figaro for his independent spirit, only thinks or writes as a function of his sole guiding principle, "his attachment to Israel." One discovers that the historian of racism, Pierre–André Taguleff, who is—one blushes to have to point out—not Jewish, is a representative, along with Alain Finkielkraut, of a group of "Jewish intellectuals" who have "up until now been considered universal thinkers" and whose "analysis" has become "more and more biased" by the interests of the "Jewish community." And, as for me, I am stupefied to read, in this same text, that my recent "campaign against Pakistan," that seems to M. Ramadan "like an exit to nowhere and almost an anachronism," finds its true significance if one takes the trouble "to compare it with" the "historic visit" of Ariel Sharon to India, an enemy of Pakistan—I was stunned to see my year–long investigation into the death of Daniel Pearl, a martyr of freedom of the press beheaded by religious fanatics, reduced to the simplistic notion of a diplomatic mission by the head of a government with whom I have never ceased, here and elsewhere, to point out my many differences. I will let pass the infamy of these claims which, under the guise of a principled defense of communal spirit, only resuscitates the good old theme of Jewish conspiracy: Lévy and Adler as secret ambassadors of Sharon . . . the "Protocol of the Elders of Zion" is not far behind ... It is perfectly normal that we do not always have the same opinion on this or that burning question. But there is a category of speech which, for everyone among us, must absolutely demarcate the threshold of the intolerable: it is the case of hate speech (it is for this reason that I have, on my side, immediately stigmatized Oriana Fallaci's book); it is, at the very least, the case of anti–Semitic speech (which is why I abjure you to distance yourself, quickly, from people who, by giving credence to the idea of an elite conspiracy at the command of Zionism, only adds fuel to the fire, and opens the way for the worst). So goes your integrity. So goes our shared democratic values."

Serbs demand ethnic enclaves in Kosovo,
By Julius Struss, Harry Browne (from Telegraph - UK), August 23, 1999
"SERBS in Kosovo have demanded the division of the province into ethnic "cantons" to protect them from the growing number of attacks by Albanians. The move would mark a step towards partition, but the attacks are making the case for it appear ever stronger. Since Yugoslav troops and Serb police were withdrawn from Kosovo in June, the Serb minority has been increasingly victimized by ethnic Albanians and most of Kosovo’s 200,000 Serbs have fled the province. Of the remainder, many have headed for Serb-controlled ghettos scattered around the province, where their protection is the guns they still hold and Nato patrols. Momcilo Trajkovic, the leading Serb politician in Kosovo, said at the weekend that cantonisation was the only way to protect the Serbs and insisted that these mono-ethnic enclaves should be legally recognised. He said: "We think that cantonisation could stop the ongoing tragedy of the Serb people. The multi-ethnic Kosovo has failed." Mr Trajkovic’s proposal flies in the face of the West’s policy of supporting an integrated, multi-ethnic Kosovo. Bernard Kouchner, the head of the United Nations administration in Kosovo, said that he would look at the idea but he did not favour it."
KFOR and UNMIK accomplices to ethnic cleansing,
Serbia Info New, August 29, 2000
"Preparations are being made in the province of Kosovo and Metohija for de facto changing the internationally recognized and guaranteed state border. To this end, Kosovo and Metohija is being systematically ethnically cleansed of its non-Albanians, with the collaboration of the KFOR and the U.N. mission UNMIK, Assistant Foreign Minister Miroslav Milosevic said, briefing foreign diplomats in Belgrade. Milosevic described the situation in Kosovo and Metohija as disastrous, saying the violation of U.N. Resolution 1244 and the Kumanovo Military-Technical Accord by KFOR and UNMIK and their collusion with ethnic Albanian terrorists and separatists of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) has plunged the province in chaos, terrorism and all kinds of international organized crime. "I am sure it is no longer necessary to offer proof that a process of total Albanisation of Kosovo and Metohija is in progress under the patronage of or with direct logistic and other support from KFOR and UNMIK, headed by Bernard Kouchner. The fact that the worst crimes in this region since World War II are being committed under the U.N. flag should be a warning that the abuse of the United Nations for partial political interests might have incalculable consequences, because developments in the province directly threaten stability in the region of southeast Europe and beyond", Milosevic said. He went on to say that the deliberate and systematic violation of U.N. Resolution 1244, among other things, totally exposes the strategy of individual international factors towards Yugoslavia and shows the true reasons for last year's NATO aggression. "The Yugoslav government believes that the U.N. Security Council, from the point of view of its obligations under the U.N. Charter and Resolution 1244, is responsible for the present situation", he said. He added that the Council is also to blame for the constant violation of Yugoslavia's sovereignty and territorial integrity by KFOR and UNMIK, headed by Bernard Kouchner."

Daily violence in Kosovo rattles UN,
Al-Jazeerah, March 29, 2005
"A series of bombings and beatings in Kosovo may be part of a drive to put pressure on the United Nations to grant independence to the ethnic Albanian majority this year, UN officials and diplomats say. The United Nations hopes to open "final status" talks on Kosovo in September, provided the province in southern Serbia proves its democratic credentials. But a pattern of almost daily acts of violence this month - some aimed at international officials - is worrying Kosovo's UN overseers and the 18,500-strong NATO-led peace force. With no guarantee that Kosovo will become independent of Serbia, some UN officials say Albanian "extremists" want to escalate tensions in the hope that they can stampede the UN into giving them what they want and getting out. "This is a warning and an expression of fear," a senior UN official said on condition of anonymity. "Under the surface it's boiling, and it could really escalate." On 8 March, Kosovo prime minister and former rebel leader Ramush Haradinaj resigned after he was charged with war crimes during the 1998-99 guerrilla war against Serb forces ... He left for the UN tribunal the next day and Kosovo held its breath. NATO deployed an extra 1000 troops but an anticipated backlash from his supporters never happened. The West praised Kosovo's democratic maturity, relieved to see no repeat of riots in March last year in which 19 people died and hundreds of Serb homes were torched. But the absence of marauding mobs masks a steady rise in incidents that fail to make the news - a hand grenade lobbed at a UN vehicle, an anti-tank mine found under another, a blast outside the main UN compound, shots at its satellite dish. "There's been an increase to almost one per day," Kai Vittrup, the Danish head of the 3000-strong UN police force, said. He also described them as a "warning" by groups uninterested in democratic methods."

New American movie to be filmed in Israel; locals hope lull in violence attracts more foreign productions,
By Merav Yudilovitch, Yeditoh Aharonoth (Israel), 6 Apr 2005
"The filming of Mitch Davis' “Mount of Olives" is set to start next Monday in Israel. The project marks the first Hollywood production to be filmed here since the outbreak of the intifada. Sources in the Israeli film industry said they hope many more such productions will find their way here, as American and international producers tended to choose other locations in recent years, mainly in light of the unstable security situation. Accordingly, the shooting of "Spy Game" starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, Originally slated for Israel, was moved to Morocco. “The Body,” directed by Jonas McCord and starring Antonio Banderas, was the last significant production in Israel. “Mount of Olives” is the impossible love story of Romy and Jula, a clear allusion to Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet." Romy, a young Jewish-American man, arrives in Israel and meets the love of his life, the beautiful Palestinian doctor, Jula. The movie will be produced by two Hollywood heavyweights: Jim Abraham ("The other side of Heaven") and Aldric La’Auli Porter ("A Beautiful Mind," "As good as It Gets," "Apollo 13.") Both producers were reluctant to provide any financial details concerning the production, but sources on their production team said the film's budget is about USD 9 million. Director Mitch Davis is a former Disney Studios advisor and writer-director of “The other side of heaven.”
TODAY'S HOLOCAUST FIX:
Teachers learn about atrocities of Holocuast,
by Reuben Mees, Hattiesburg American, April 6, 2005
"The late Alvin Shipman, a World War II veteran from Poplarville, had a lifelong secret wish that everyone should know about the atrocities committed at the Nazi concentration camps in Germany. That wish took another step toward fruition this week as Warren Marcus, an educator from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, came to South Mississippi to show high school and middle school teachers the importance of including the story of the Holocaust in their classes. "It's overwhelming," said Shipman's daughter, Shirley Johnson of Poplarville. "Yesterday I had to go outside and have a cry." Johnson, who attended Marcus' Monday workshop on the Gulf Coast and Tuesday session at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center, spoke to teachers about a promise her father made to a Polish prisoner of war. One day in 1973 he asked his daughter to drive him from Poplarville to Texas where he showed her a book titled "Atrocities at Camp Mauthausen Austria" he had hidden in a pillow and mailed to the U.S. during the war. The book, the only one of its kind known to exist, includes a printed copy of Mauthausen camp commandant Franz Ziereis' confession of how he carried out the executions of thousands of prisoners, photos from the camp and a letter from Charles Pilarski, a Polish citizen conscripted into the German army. Johnson promised her father shortly before his death in 1979 she would publish the confession and continue to make others aware of the atrocities endured by prisoners in the German camps. Johnson and her father's story were instrumental in the passage of the 2004 bill that created the Mississippi Commission on the Holocaust, which opened the door to Marcus' visit. It was also the basis of Johnson's book "A Soldier's Promise" and is being made into a documentary film by Ann Gillis Productions of Nashville, Tenn. During his Tuesday presentation to about 35 Pine Belt teachers, Marcus said today's students can still learn valuable lessons from the "major watershed event in human history." Not only has the Holocaust "had an impact all over the world for people of all ethnicities," but there are also lessons to be learned about tolerance and respect for others, the roots of persecution, personal responsibility and the danger of indifference, Marcus said ... Marcus told teachers classroom projects should be more in depth than merely reading "The Diary of Anne Frank", which tells the story of a Jewish family who tried to hide from the Nazis. "Anne Frank is only a teeny little part of the Holocaust and leaves out a tremendous amount," Marcus said."
Prof to offer presentation on Holocaust,
Standard Journal, April 7, 2005
"A professor and author with a longtime professional interest in the Holocaust will present the lecture, "Explaining Holocaust Perpetrators," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, in Bloomsburg University's Carver Hall. Christopher Browning, professor of history at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, will base the lecture on his book, "Ordinary Men: Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland." ... "The Holocaust was the deliberate, machine-like killing of an estimated 6 million Jews at the hands of the Nazi government between 1939 and 1945," said Lisa Stallbaumer-Beishline, associate professor of history at Bloom. "The victims were chosen based on the religion of their grandparents. To the Nazi government, the fact of having been born a Jew was a capital crime" .... Stallbaumer-Beishline, who teaches a Bloom course on the history of the Holocaust, said Browning's talk will pull from sociological and psychological studies of group behavior to explain factors that motivated Holocaust perpetrators. Browning served as an expert witness in war crimes trials in Australia, Canada and Great Britain and in two Holocaust denial cases."
Utah Senator To Be Honored for Holocaust Rescue Efforts,
U.S. Newswire, April 6, 2005
"The governor of Utah has designated April 8, 2005, "Elbert Thomas Day," to honor the late Utah Senator's efforts to promote U.S. rescue of Jewish refugees from the Holocaust. During the Holocaust, Sen. Thomas, a devout Mormon, championed a Senate resolution that put pressure on President Roosevelt to establish the War Refugee Board. The Board played a key role in rescuing some 200,000 European Jews, in part by sponsoring and financing the life-saving work of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg. Sen. Thomas often said that his efforts to help Jewish refugees and his support for creating the State of Israel were based on his religious beliefs as a Mormon. The initiative for the "Elbert Thomas Day" proclamation came from The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies and the Weber State University Holocaust Commemoration Committee, in Ogden, Utah (Senator Thomas's home town)."
Memory and Innovation in the Post-Holocaust Generation in France (French Studies),
Fabula, April 3, 2005
" This special issue explores different representations of cultural memory in France since the Holocaust, a period overshadowed by historical trauma (wars, decolonization, genocide), in which memory has become an increasingly dominant cultural obsession. Contested representations of cultural memory have given rise to important critical and philosophical debates, which pivot on the relation between memory and history, the individual and the collective. Covering a broad range of spheres including literature, cultural history and theory, psychoanalysis and film, the essays collected here draw on and contribute to these critical debates in analyses that seek to rethink the relation between memory and representation. Where recent critical work on cultural memory has tended to emphasize its failures and frustrations, these essays highlight a different model of memory as innovation and creative representation. Central to all the essays is the idea that memories are constructed and mediated via specific culturally constructed frames, within which individual memory is irrevocably and sometimes troublingly bound up with collective modes of remembering. Yet the representations of memory examined here show how memory can work productively in and through tensions such as the relation between the individual and the collective without trying to overcome them: these tensions remain as crucial elements in the quest to find new forms of representation of memory."

Colombian-Israeli cocaine ring busted,
By ETGAR LEFKOVITS, Jerusalem Post, April 4, 2005
"Eight people are under arrest for allegedly taking part in aninternational drug ring suspected of importing cocaine from Colombia to Israel, police announced on Monday. The eight, including seven Israelis and one Colombian, were apprehended over the last week in a joint Israeli-Colombian police sting operation. A court gag order, which was in place on the case, was lifted Monday afternoon, with a Jerusalem police press conference detailing news of the arrests. The covert police investigation in the case, codenamed "Broad Horizons", began three months ago in the wake of intelligence information that Israeli and Colombian drug dealers were smuggling cocaine into Israel, police said. Police then dispatched two undercover agents, including a 48-year-old mother of three, who posed as drug couriers. During their stay in Colombia, the two agents received two suitcases from the drug dealers with nine kilograms of cocaine elaborately hidden inside, police said. The drugs are valued at NIS 1.5 million on the Israeli drug market, police said. According to police, the drugs had been chemically-altered, allowing the dealers to hide them in the suitcase pouches, and making them virtually indistinguishable to police. The agents brought the drug-filled suitcases back to Israel, where they to meet up with the Israeli-based members of the ring and receive NIS 60,000 each for their services, the police said. Upon arrival in Israel, the chemically-altered drugs were examined at a police laboratory, and were only identified as cocaine with the help of Columbian police ... Concomitantly, Colombia police raided the home of the Colombian suspect
arrested in the case, seizing a half a kilogram of cocaine, ammunition, two yarmulkes, and empty suitcases found in his home ... Police said that the drug ring likely managed to smuggle a still unknown amount of drugs in to Israel before it was busted, and that the group planned to establish a Colombian-Israeli drug conduit." Poll: Most Jewish Israelis favor emigration of Israeli Arabs,
by Yoav Stern, Haaretz (Israel), April 4, 2005
"A majority of Jewish Israelis believe that the state should encourage Israeli Arabs to emigrate, according to a survey conducted by the Dahaf Institute on behalf of Madar, the Palestinian Center for Israel Studies. The survey, conducted in mid-March among a representative sample of 501 Jewish Israelis, found that 42 percent agreed that the state should encourage Israeli Arabs to emigrate, while another 17 percent said they tended to agree with this. This compares to 40 percent who disagreed or tended to disagree. Dr. Assad Ghanem, the head of Madar's research department, said yesterday that the results did not surprise him, as other surveys have produced similar findings. "In the 1990s, the positions of Israeli Jews were less extreme, but positions have changed since the intifada began," he explained. The survey also found that only 34 percent of Jewish Israelis support a peace deal that entails a full withdrawal to the 1967 borders, while 65 percent oppose it. Though surveys have consistently shown that 60 percent of Israelis support establishment of a Palestinian state, most pollsters do not specify its borders when asking this question. "Only a minority of Israelis are willing to accept the state that the Palestinians are talking about, and this fact was only revealed because we formulated the survey questions from our own standpoint rather than from the standpoint of Jewish Israeli pollsters," said Ghanem. According to him, Madar, a new institute based in Ramallah, is the first Palestinian institute to employ Hebrew-speaking Arabs and publish studies by Israeli researchers. The institute has been criticized for this, but Ghanem rejects such comments, saying: "We have to understand Israel in reality, not in slogans, whether for the purpose of peace or the purpose of war."
Lawyer wants tape barred from Ahenakew hate trial,
CBC (Canada), April 3, 2005
"The lawyer for former aboriginal leader David Ahenakew is trying to get a videotape declared inadmissible as evidence at his client's hate trial. The Crown wants to use the videotape of a conference on Dec. 13, 2002 as evidence. Ahenakew was a guest speaker at the meeting on aboriginal health, but actually talked about other topics, including blaming Jews for starting the Second World War. Ahenakew's lawyer, Doug Christie, said the meeting was private and the tape was not meant for public use. If it is ruled to be a private conversation, it could not be used by the prosecution. Crown prosecutor Brent Klause pointed out that reporters had been invited to the meeting. After the meeting, reporter James Parker of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix spoke to Ahenakew outside the conference. Some of the statements made there were used in the hate charge Ahenakew faces. Christie wants that tape excluded, too. The Crown alleges that Ahenakew, now 71, promoted hatred by praising Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust and referring to Jews as a "disease" in comments he made to Parker. Ahenakew wouldn't talk to reporters as he arrived at the courthouse Monday morning, but Christie said the case is about free speech. He also said the case confirms his belief that hate laws will be used for political oppression ... Ahenakew was the leader of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations senate at the time. He resigned four days after the alleged incident, apologizing for his conduct."

Israel’s new MTV ambassador. 18-year-old Jason Danino-Holt was born and bred in Tel Aviv but is about to become MTV Europe's youngest ever host,
by Raz Schechnik, Yedioth Aharonoth (Israel), April 3, 2005
"Jason Danino-Holt, who is just 18-years-old, is still trying to adjust to the idea that he will soon begin his new job as MTV Europe ’s youngest ever host. “I still can’t get used to the idea that I will become a host on MTV,” said Danino-Holt, who spent the weekend in Prague after winning the competition. “I have already met senior officials from MTV, I was briefed on the work and I almost fainted. It’s like a dream,” he said. Danino-Holt is the third Israeli representative to take up the prestigious post, following in the footsteps of Eden Harel and Beckie Griffin, who recently finished her stint. On his way to the top he beat another Israeli candidate, fashion model Etgar Boner, as well as candidates from Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and, Hungary ... On graduating high school in July he will move into his new apartment in London ... Danino says he was not very optimistic before the finals, which took place at the Israeli Ken Velo Fashion Center in Prague. “The other contestants were good, but at least I knew my English would pass. It was a close contest,” he said. “I am supposed to host the magazine ‘Switch On’ once a week, which will focus on the cultural and night life in Europe.” Danino also said he plans to speak to the former Israeli MTV host Eden Harel for some tips on what to expect. “I am proud that Israel is sending an Israeli representative to MTV for the third consecutive time, and I am going to push the fact that I am Israeli,” he said."
Mystery of the 2 Hotels Embroils Greeks, Jews and Arabs,
by Greg Myre and Anthee Carasava, New York Times, April 4, 2005
"The suspected deed hardly seems the stuff of an international dispute: the Greek Orthodox Church, a major landowner here, reportedly sold two modest, Palestinian-run hotels in Jerusalem's Old City to Jewish investors from abroad. The Greek patriarch, Eirinaios, has repeatedly denied the report. But his claims have met with deep skepticism, and the episode has touched some of the most sensitive nerves in the Holy Land, igniting a controversy that stretches far beyond the ancient stone streets of the Old City. Palestinian politicians accuse the Greek Orthodox Church of selling prime real estate and assisting Israel in the ceaseless battle over the city that both sides claim as a capital. Palestinians in the Greek Orthodox Church have renewed charges that the Greek clerics are out of touch with the Arab clergy and worshipers. The Greek government, which has close relations with the church, sent a committee here to investigate last month, and is now hinting that the patriarch should step aside. Jordan, with its historic ties to Jerusalem's Christian institutions, has twice summoned the patriarch for an explanation. The issue was even discussed at last month's Arab League summit meeting in Algeria. As the dispute unfolds, Israel has been conspicuously silent, the mystery investors remain unidentified, and the status of the hotels is not clear ... Maariv, a leading Israeli newspaper, reported March 18 that the Greek Church had quietly sold the land and the buildings for several million dollars to Jewish investors who live outside Israel. "Omar Square is in our hands," the newspaper declared. For years, wealthy Jewish investors in Israel and abroad have sought to purchase East Jerusalem properties. The aim is to bolster the Jewish presence in the traditionally Arab part of the city, and increase the likelihood that the land would be part of Israel in any political settlement."
$1 million donated for Jewish education in Palm Beach County,
Sun-Sentinel, April 4, 2005
"Jewish-education advocate Dotti Seaman of Boca Raton has donated $1 million to the Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Seaman said she hoped her gift will encourage others to support Jewish education and the future of the Jewish community ... Seaman's gift will go to the Lion of Judah Endowment, a scholarship fund that is part of the foundation's 10-year drive to raise $100 million to enable any student, regardless of financial means, to attend a Jewish day school serving Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Highland Beach."

Bringing darkness to light. Hollywood films about the Holocaust are the subject of a new AMC documentary,
by George Haas, Daily South Town, April 4, 2005
"How do you comprehend the unfathomable? How do you illustrate the unshowable? How do you bear witness to human tragedy of such a grand scale that even attempting to put a rendition on film is to trivialize the event in some circles? And yet much of the world's knowledge of the Holocaust and Adolf Hitler's persecution of the Jews is gleaned from Hollywood depictions. "The Diary of Anne Frank," "Judgment at Nuremberg," "Sophie's Choice," "Schindler's List" and others all helped shine a light on this dark corner of history. Now, a new AMC documentary sheds some light on these movies and the filmmakers who often bucked prevailing sentiment to get them made. "Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust" airs at 8 p.m. Tuesday on the cable channel. Narrated by Gene Hackman, the 1½-hour film will air commercial-free. "American movies more than any other medium shaped how we understand and remember this event that took place so far from our shores," Hackman says in setting the stage for what follows. Beginning with the rise of Nazism, the film traces Hollywood's complicity in the 1930s and its role as witness in newsreel footage of the day. Most importantly, there is the conscious way the filmmaking community took on the responsibility of educating the masses in the 60 years since Hitler's death camps were liberated in 1945. Using clips from dozens of films and the comments of historians, survivors and the filmmakers themselves, the documentary provides a fascinating look at how Hollywood and the public came to terms with the Holocaust through the lens of our film record. It was anything but a simple story to assemble, according to Daniel Anker, an award-winning filmmaker who spent more than three years on the project. Anker said he and producer Ellin Baumel originally planned on a 45-minute film, but the project kept expanding as they dug deeper into the subject. It was a topic that has sparked debates on a variety of fronts, from Holocaust survivors who objected to any Hollywood dramatizations to the complex and often contradictory actions carried out by the film studios over the years. "The early history is what first intrigued me," Anker said of America's tangled economic ties with Germany. It was that and the fear of anti-Semitism at home that kept Hollywood from examining the gathering Nazi storm with any real conviction. Newsreel footage from 1933 depicts a massive Nazi book-burning as something akin to a fraternity prank. The few anti-Nazi films from the period, such as 1937's "Confessions of a Nazi Spy," and 1940's "The Mortal Storm," never used the word Jew, referring to victims as "non-Aryans." Hitler still banned all films by MGM ("The Mortal Storm's" producer) from being shown in Germany, and more than one U.S. congressman thought the studios, largely run by Jewish businessmen such as Louis B. Mayer and Frank Warner, were "conspiring to propel the U.S. into war." Even during the war, Hollywood avoided the Jewish question in favor of flag-waving movies that attacked America's enemies ... Anker, whose family history includes East-European relatives who died at the hands of the Nazis, said it was television's landmark "Holocaust" miniseries in 1978 that had the greatest impact on him ... Despite their flaws, the films elevate our understanding with deeply personal tales of the horror, the sadness and the occasional triumph. "I think there is a consensus among most people," Anker said, "that these are stories worth telling, even in a fictional way, even with the prospect of leaving elements out or misrepresenting elements of the truth of what happened. The story needs to be told."
Egypt astonished at Israeli awards for "terrorism",
Deepika Global (India), April 3, 2005
"Egypt is astonished at Israel's tribute to nine Egyptian Jews recruited by the Jewish state to carry out ''terrorist operations'' in Cairo and Alexandria in the 1950s, the foreign minister said. Israeli President Moshe Katsav last week honoured the Egyptian Jews recruited by Israel as agents to ruin Cairo's rapprochement with the United States and Britain by firebombing sites frequented by foreigners the cities. Israel hoped the attacks, which caused no casualties, would be blamed on local insurgents. But the young Zionist bombers were caught and confessed at public trials. Two were hanged and the rest served jail terms and emigrated to Israel. ''We are utterly astonished at this tribute, especially at this time after 50 years have passed since they carried out (the attacks),'' Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said late yesterday. ''What calls for astonishment in this matter is that those people were Jewish Egyptians and, likewise, they carried out explosions in cinemas and in American and British establishments in Egypt and they are all clear terrorist operations.'' Egypt made peace with Israel in 1979. It was the first Arab state to do so."
Boxing: Greenberg rekindles the Jewish interest,
by Alan Hubbard, The Independent (UK), April 3, 2005
"Since the days of Berg and Gershon Mendeloff, the real name of Ted "Kid" Lewis, Jewish fighters have been somewhat thin on the canvas, but the emerging presence of a new kid on the block has rekindled rheumy-eyed dreams of another Jewish champion in the making. Roman Greenberg doesn't hold a British passport, but he lives and trains here. Born in Russia and raised in Israel, he is the only professional Jewish fighter operating in this country. Moreover, he is a heavyweight, and there has never been a Jewish world heavyweight champion. Yes, Max Baer, who won the title then lost it in his first defence, to James J Braddock in 1935, always claimed to be of the faith, and wore the Star of David on his shorts, but as his trainer, Ray Arcel, later revealed, that was because it was good for business in times when boxing had a fervent Jewish following in the US. "I saw him in the shower, and believe me, he ain't Jewish," said Arcel. Greenberg left Russia with his family when he was a youngster because of escalating anti-Semitism, sleeping rough for a time on the streets of Tel Aviv ... He was spotted in a Tel Aviv gym by his current mentor, Robert Waterman, a boxing "nut" determined to get into the fight game. Coincidentally he is now the only active Jewish promoter in Britain, where the likes of Jack Solomons, Harry Levene and Mickey Duff were the impresario oligarchs of their day ... "Believe me, America is clamouring for him," [says Waterman], "but we feel he needs a more traditional route. If he was based in the States they'd want him to meet top-20 opponents. Two of those guys we quite fancy, but if he beats them what does he do then? He won't be ready for any sort of world- title shot until the end of next year. He needs to mature." They make a fascinating team. Waterman, 42, is a north Londoner trained in accountancy, but more significantly he was formerly in security. We're not talking Group 4 or nightclub dress-code checking here. He declines to elaborate, but he was involved in anti-terrorism work in Israel and the protection of Britain's Jewish community. Recently his organisation, Fight Academy, which he runs in partnership with a Maidenhead millionaire, Jim Evans, and the Sheffield promoter Dennis Hobson, made an offer "in excess of seven figures" to Amir Khan. "We came close, but obviously not close enough," says Waterman. With Audley Harrison skulking in America, the British heavyweight scene needs someone who can pull the crowds. Greenberg could be the man. "The trouble is, a heavyweight like Roman is not really a small-hall fighter, and there aren't many big venues," says Waterman ... Greenberg himself insists that if he does make it, his dream is to enter the ring for the undisputed world heavyweight championship with two flags, one Israeli, one British."
Arab players hailed as heroes in Israel's World Cup campaign,
By Inigo Gilmore, Telegraph (UK), April 3, 2005
"Two Arab footballers have become unlikely national heroes in Israel after helping to save the country's team from World Cup disgrace. The pair, who have both suffered verbal abuse from Jewish fans in the past, have finally won their affections by scoring crucial equalising goals in Israel's two qualifying games last week. Their sudden popularity has been hailed as a sign of football's ability to bridge the gaps between warring communities - especially after one of the Arab players dedicated his goal to his "Jewish brothers". Abbas Suwan, whose 90th-minute goal against Ireland in Tel Aviv last Saturday secured a 1-1 draw, said afterwards: "I thank everyone cheered on the national team and made no distinction between Arabs and Jews. Everyone hugged me in the dressing room." Reaction has been less warm, however, from the two players' fellow Israeli Arabs, many of whom were uncomfortable at the way triumphant Israeli fans chanted "He's Jewish, he's Jewish" after Suwan's goal. Many have been supporting Israel's opponents in the World Cup matches, in protest at what they say is discrimination against them by the country's government. "We are not happy about the results," said Sami Mattar, an Arab Israeli living in Jaffa. "If you feel like a second-class citizen in a country, how can you feel that you want it to win? Such national occasions make Jews proud, not Arabs, because Israelis claim it as a Jewish victory. Arabs particularly resent the fact that all players in the national squad are expected to join in the Hatikva, the Israeli national anthem, which they see as representing only the country's Jewish citizens. They also hear regular chants from the terraces of "When the Jews go marching in." ... Another complaint is that the clubs where the three Arabs in the 22-strong national squad honed their skills are starved of resources. Suwan's team, in his home town of Saknin, in the Galilee area, defied the odds to qualify for Europe last season, but has failed to win sponsorship from Jewish companies. Palestinian politicians pushed the point home last Wednesday, after Walid Badir, a veteran of the Israeli premier league team Maccabi Haifa, saved the national side from defeat again by heading in a late equaliser against France. Moments after Badir's goal, Ahmed Tibi, a prominent Arab member of parliament, made a taunting telephone call to Ben Caspit, a leading Israeli newspaper columnist who was watching the game in the stadium. "No Arabs, no goals," he said mockingly, adding: "Perhaps the time has come to install sewage infrastructure in our unrecognised villages."
AROUND THE JEWISH WORLD. ‘Oy Vey, Soy Gay’: Gay Jews
in Argentina form support groups,
By Larry Luxner, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, April 3, 2005
"It’s hard enough just to be Jewish in Argentina, a country where, by law, you must be married and Catholic to run for president. So imagine what it’s like to grow up Jewish and gay, or Jewish and bisexual. Or Jewish and transgender, for that matter. “We’re not rejected or expelled, but we’re not fully accepted either,” said German Vaisman, a 30-year-old gay man who founded the nonprofit organization Keshet Argentina last year. Keshet — the Hebrew word for rainbow — has around 120 members and is growing. “Our mission is to contribute to the development of cultural, political and social initiatives that deal with sexual diversity within Judaism,” Vaisman said. “Our vision is to have a fully inclusive Jewish community of all GLBT Jews.” That’s shorthand for “gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender,” though 80 percent of Keshet’s members are homosexual men. Most live in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. The group’s unofficial slogan is “Oy Vey, Soy Gay” — Oy Vey, I’m Gay ... “I was raised within the Jewish community and attended a Jewish day school,” Vaisman said. “On Sundays I went to La Hebraica,” a Jewish country club, “with my parents. I don’t remember being with non-Jews until I went to high school.”
Iran's hardline press denounces John Paul II for compromise with Jews,
Turkish Press, April 4, 2005
"Iran's hardline press on Monday accused the late pope John Paul II of compromising with Jews, pointing out that the Jewish state was not only an arch enemy of the Islamic republic. "Not only did the pope never condemn the crimes of the Zionist regime in the territories, the Vatican officially recognised its existence," the Jomhuri Islami newspaper complained. The paper also cautioned that the expansion of Islam "was a constant worry" for a pontiff it said "compromised with the Zionist regime". The Hamshahri newspaper, also on the right wing, complained that the late head of the Roman Catholic Church "caved in to pressure from the Jewish lobby", despite "Jewish responsibility for the death of Christ". Despite the dissenting voices, there was nevertheless praise for the pope's attempt to build bridges with the Muslim world. "He tried to show the independent face of the Vatican, recovering Muslim public opinion lost through his rapprochement with the Jews," Hamshahri wrote, noting that John Paul II was "the only Christian leader to have entered a mosque and kissed the Koran". The paper also praised his position after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, when he took the opposite view to those who "went on a crusade on the pretext of fighting terrorism." On Sunday, President Mohammed Khatami heaped praise on John Paul, describing him as "a disciple of religious mysticism, philosophic deliberation and thought, and artistic and poetic creativity."

Mikhail Fridman Once Again Challenged to a Duel. Honor and Dignity,
Kommersant, April 1, 2005
"Boris Berezovsky, the owner of Kommersant Publishing House, announced yesterday that he had filed suit in London's Crown Court against Mikhail Fridman, the head of Alfa Group. The reason for the suit was Fridman's appearance on the NTV talk show "K Baryeru" [Challenge to a Duel], in which the latter claimed that Berezovsky threatened him in 1999 in connection with Alfa Bank's plan to grant credit to “partners” of Vladimir Yakovlev, then owner of Kommersant Publishing House, to buy out the newspaper's shares. Berezovsky is asking for compensation for damage caused to him by, in his words, this false claim and that the defendant undertake not to make such claims in future ... On October 28, 2004, Mikhail Fridman, the head of Alfa Group, and Andrey Vasilyev, the general manager of ZAO Kommersant Publishing House, were guests on the NTV talk show "K Baryeru". A rather heated argument flared up between them over the article "The Bank Crisis Comes Out into the Street" published in Kommersant on July 7, 2004, which reported on lineups of depositors wanting to withdraw their money from Moscow branches of Alfa Bank. We remind our readers that this article was the cause of a claim filed by the bank in the Moscow Arbitration Court to collect losses and compensation for reputational damage totaling 320.5 million rubles from ZAO Kommersant Publishing House (the claim was initially allowed in full, but a court of appeal reduced the amount collectible by 10 million rubles in December of last year; and a week ago, the Federal Arbitration Court of the Moscow District reduced the amount by another 270 million rubles) ...
From the Broadcast of "K Baryeru" of October 28, 2004
Mikhail Fridman: At that time [1999], we told them [the partners of Vladimir Yakovlev, the former owner of Kommersant] that if they wanted to buy [buy up Kommersant's shares from Yakovlev] so that the newspaper would remain truly independent, we were prepared to grant them credit. This question was discussed. And what is more, Berezovsky himself called me about this. He was very displeased.
Andrey Vasilyev: Did he advise you?
M.F.: No. He threatened me as usual. He said…
A.V. What, you?
М.F.: He threatened even me. He threatened everyone. That's how he operates."
Apache Longbow Helicopters Arrive in Israel,
Israel National News, Apr 3, 2005
"If you're in the Hamas or the Jihad and planning that quick getaway, the helicopters, armed with "fire and forget" technology, allow pilots to sort out and shoot out targets in six seconds flat. Three Apache Longbow helicopters have arrived at the Ramon airbase in the Negev. The delivery from the United States is part of a $640 million defense package designed to upgrade Israel’s helicopter force. According to an unnamed Israel Air Force (IAF) officer quoted by Y-net, the helicopters come with a “fire and forget” targeting mechanism that allows pilots to sort out and then shoot out targets in six seconds flat. The system can even fire more than one missile at a time and does not require the pilot to maintain eye contact with his target. The officer said the system provides pilots with “an efficient way to deal with the risks helicopters face – from Kalashnikov gunfire, to anti-tank missiles and anti-aircraft fire.” The officer said that the helicopter’s controls were especially “user friendly”. “The cockpit is a story in itself,” he said, “every activity or malfunction appears on the screen.” The helicopters don’t come cheap. Each one cost $27 million, with most of the new gunships to be arriving next year. Today’s arrivals flew directly to Israel, making a ten and a half-hour flight on a cargo plane from an air force base in Canada. The helicopters are manufactured by Boeing at a plant in Arizona. Lt.Col. “T” of the IAF greeted the planes: “This is an opportunity to say thanks to all those who were involved in making this day possible. This is a great day for the best helicopter in the world.” Another IAF officer Col. “A” added, “At this hour a new era is beginning for the Ramon base and the Air Force. In a short while, these helicopters will be loaded off the plane and officially join the Air Force. Men, to your stations!”
IDF unveils ultra-modern weapons,
By Margot Dudkevitch, Jerusalem Post, April 3, 2005
"The best attack helicopter in the world landed Sunday in Israel as part of a $650 million military aid package from the United States. The first three of the eighteen AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopters that will be known as "Sarafs" arrived today in American C-5 Galaxy transport planes, the largest transport planes in use in the world. The new choppers, which are unique for the large radar dish mounted on top of the rotors, have exceptional precision strike capability, automatically identifying and locking on missile targets within seconds. Boeing, the helicopter's manufacturer, reports that the Longbow has also been sold to Egypt, Greece, Japan, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Singapore and the United Kingdom. The Longbow saw its first combat deployment with the US in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Like much of Israel's US-acquired military hardware, the Saraf will receive improvements in its armament and navigational systems, using technology that does not yet exist in the US. In another technological development, the army weekly "Bamahane" reported the institution of a new system to be deployed along the
post-withdrawal Gaza fence through which women soldiers will operate remote-control machine guns in conjunction with cameras and censors in a bid to stop infiltrators. Remote-controlled observation posts operated by women soldiers are already in use around Gaza. The operators, watching their section of the front on computer screens, can direct soldiers to a point of an attempted infiltration, the weekly said. The new element in the system is that the soldiers in the command post will be able to aim and fire an array of machine guns at suspected infiltrators. The weapon will have a range of 1,500-2,000 meters, the weekly said. The remote-control guns would do the job of the soldiers who now chase down infiltrators."
ADL Audit: Anti-Semitic Incidents at Highest Level in Nine Years,
U.S. Newswire, April 4, 2005
"Anti-Semitic incidents in the United States have reached their highest level in nine years, according to newly released statistics from the Anti- Defamation League (ADL). The League's annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents, issued today, reported a total of 1,821 anti- Semitic incidents in 2004, an increase of 17 percent over the 1,557 incidents reported during 2003. Among the factors contributing to the increase, according to the Audit, were stepped up activity by organized neo-Nazi hate groups and a spike in reports of anti-Jewish harassment and intimidation in America's schools. "We had hoped that the trend of the past few years would continue; that acts of anti-Semitism would decline or at least remain static," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "The increase shows that there are still too many who feel emboldened to act out their anti-Jewish animus. It is extremely disturbing that young children in school are being confronted with in-your-face anti-Semitism. We had long thought that that was a thing of the past, but obviously we were wrong." Anti-Semitic incidents included in the Audit comprise physical and verbal assaults, harassment, property defacement, vandalism or other expressions of anti-Jewish sentiment. The 2004 ADL Audit comprises data from 44 states and the District of Columbia, and is compiled using official crime statistics, as well as information provided to ADL's 30 regional offices by victims, law enforcement officers and community leaders. The Audit identifies both criminal and non-criminal acts of harassment and intimidation, including distribution of hate propaganda, threats and slurs ... "At a time when anti-Semitism is at a high in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Canada and other countries, it is disturbing to see that it is increasing in America as well," said Mr. Foxman. "While most of the incidents in the U.S. are less violent than those experienced recently by the Jewish communities of Europe, it is troubling that so many people in this country feel a need to act out their anti-Jewish animus in ways large and small. Just one act of anti-Semitism can deeply affect an entire community. Sadly, in an America where Jews enjoy a level of safety and freedom unparalleled in history, we still experience anti-Semitism at an average rate of nearly five incidents per day ... The Internet continued to play a substantial role in the dissemination of anti-Semitism, with hate literature being transmitted through hundreds of sites on the Web and through bulletin boards, chat rooms and e-mail messages. While Internet messages are not generally categorized as incidents of hate in the ADL Audit, specific threats aimed at Jewish synagogues and institutions via e-mail were counted ... "The proliferation of hate on the Internet [said Abe Foxman] has helped to facilitate the spread of extremist propaganda, for anyone can download hate material, print copies and canvass an entire neighborhood." Anti-Jewish Expressions in the Schools Another factor that played a role in the rise of both harassment and vandalism incidents was a high number of anti- Semitic acts reported at middle and high schools. In the eight states with the highest overall totals of anti-Semitic acts in 2004, 13 percent of all incidents were school based. These incidents took the form of swastikas painted or written on desks, walls and other school property, as well as anti-Jewish name- calling, slurs, mockery and bullying ... Anti-Semitism On Campus Campus incidents increased marginally, to 74 incidents, from 68 in 2003, still substantially less than the 106 anti-Semitic incidents reported in 2002. In the three year period from 2000 to 2002, campus incidents had increased by more than 50 percent. By 2003, more effective counteraction and educational efforts by students and faculty helped to reduce the number of virulently anti-Semitic activities that have crossed over the line into harassment of Jewish students and other anti-Semitic phenomena in recent years."

[JTR contributor note: "Yes, Virginia, It Does Say Fifty Thousand." Our comment: Firstly, other articles about this cite a figure of 5,000 petitioners, which is nice enough, but it's obviously not inflated enough for full use by Zionist propaganda, which needs to ratchet up the hysteria potential for worldwide Jewry. In any case, when the day comes when Jewish obsession with censoring "hate" throughout the world is finally turned upon their own racist, xenophobic religious and Zionist texts, the shit is going to hit the fan.]
50,000 public figures ask Russia to ban Jewish groups.
Haaretz (Israel), April 3, 2005
"Some 50,000 well known public figures and church officials in Russia have signed a petition asking the country's state prosecution to ban Jewish groups, Army Radio reported Sunday. The petition uses quotations from an abridged guide to Jewish law, the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, to support its contention that Judaism is "an extremist and racist ethnicity that hates non-Jews," the radio station reported. The signatories - including former army generals, artists and an unnamed former international chess champion - argue that this definition of Judaism makes the activity of Jewish groups illegal, according to the radio. A similar petition was signed by 20 Russian lawmakers about two months ago, the radio said. Foreign Ministry official Nimrod Barkan warned Sunday that Russians were effectively getting the message that anti-Semitism would be tolerated. "There's the expansion of the number of anti-Semitic incidents, including violent incidents [in Russia]; the enforcement institutions avoid taking effective steps," said Barkan, who heads the Diaspora and religion department in the ministry. "This sends a message, also to those sitting on the fence," he told Army Radio, "that it's comfortable and secure to be anti-Semitic in Russia."
Mass call to outlaw Jewish groups,
Jerusalem Post, April 3, 2005
"Over 5,000 known public activists and members of the clergy in Russia have sent a petition to the state prosecutor's office in which they demand to outlaw Jewish groups. In the petition, the signatories use quotes from Kitzur Shulhan Aruch, which they argue prove their claim that Judaism is a fanatic and racist religion that hates gentiles. Among those who signed the letter, according to Army Radio, are ex-generals, artists and the former world champion in chess. Israel's Ambassador to Russia, Arkadi Milman, called the new affair severe and said that Israel will contact Russian authorities in an attempt to prosecute those responsible for the petition. The recent anti-Semitic petition comes two months after about 20 members of the lower Russian parliament house, the State Duma, asked Prosecutor- General Vladimir Ustinov to investigate their claims that Jews are fomenting ethnic hatred and provoking anti-Semitism. Arguing that Jews were to blame for anti-Semitism, the authors of the letter demanded that Jewish groups be outlawed, based on legislation against extremism and fomenting ethnic discord. However, in a 306-58 vote that hewed to party lines, the State Duma adopted a declaration saying that the 'clear anti-Semitic intent' of the letter and other appeals for government actions targeting Jews 'prompts indignation and sharp condemnation.' The stunning calls to ban all Jewish groups comes amid concerns of persistent anti-Semitism that continues to plague Russia. Jewish leaders have praised President Vladimir Putin's government for encouraging religious tolerance, but rights groups accuse the authorities of failing to adequately prosecute the perpetrators of anti-Semitic and racial violence. Russia's chief rabbi, Berel Lazar, said the lawmakers were either insane or 'quite sane but limitlessly cynical' and were hoping to win support 'by playing the anti-Semitic card.' [JTR note: Organized Jewry is a band of hypocritical thieves. Berel Lazar, the chief rabbi of Russia, is a member of the Orthodox Chabad organization. By the premises of all these stupid "hate" laws that are popping up all over the world in deference to the Jewish Lobby, Chabad is as legitimate a "hate" organization as any other. Statement to the Ad Hoc Committee,
by Joseph Massad, Censoring Thought, March 14, 2005
"I appear before you today because of a campaign of intimidation to which I have been subjected for over three years. While this campaign was started by certain members of the Columbia faculty, and by outside forces using some of my students as conduits, it soon expanded to include members of the Columbia administration, the rightwing tabloid press, the Israeli press, and more locally the Columbia Spectator. Much of this preceded the David Project film “Columbia Unbecoming,” and the ensuing controversy. In the following statement, I will provide you with the history of this coordinated campaign, including the facts pertaining to the intimidation to which I am being subjected by the Columbia University administration, most manifestly through the convening of your own committee before which I appear today out of a combined sense of intimidation and obligation and not because I recognize its legitimacy. You need to bear with the details of the following narrative, as the campaign of intimidation against me is most insidious in its details ... On June 25 2002, Daniel Pipes and one Jonathan Schanzer published an article in the New York Post titled “Extremists on Campus,” in which they listed me as one such extremist and complained that I use my class as a “soapbox for anti-Israeli polemics.” The Wall Street Journal published on September 18, 2002 an article about a pro-Israel website calling itself CampusWatch being launched by Daniel Pipes, stating that the website listed 8 professors (including me) with our own public dossiers as enemies of America and Israel and called on our students to monitor us in class. Following the launch of CampusWatch, my E-mail was spammed for months with over 4000 E-mails daily, which I had to sift through until finally Columbia was able to install an anti-spamming program. Moreover, I was subjected to identity theft when thousands of racist E-mails would be sent in my name to individuals and listservs, including a few to the White House and Congressmen threatening them with terrorist action. Moreover, thousands of other E-mails would be sent to people with requests of notes of receipt being sent back to my E-mail account which clogged it further with thousands of such E-mail receipts. I also received tens of racist E-mails and phone messages including death threats directed at me. In the meantime, Pipes’s website called on our own students to spy on us in the classroom and report to him, and Kramer called for my dismissal from Columbia University. In interviews that I gave to the press, I spoke about the misquotation which Pipes and Kramer continued to propagate, and about my experience in my Spring 2002 class, with regards to the petition to get me fired and the secret meeting at the Medical school which my student had told me about ..." Holocaust victim sues TriMet. A woman says an incident on a bus violated her rights and reawakened trauma she endured in a death camp,
by Holly Danks, The Oregonian, April 2, 2005
"An 81-year-old Holocaust survivor is suing TriMet and a former bus driver for more than $5 million, saying that when the driver yelled at her and pushed her off his bus it reawakened the memories of Auschwitz. Rosa Wigmore, who survived the notorious Nazi concentration camp, wants $3.06 million from Timothy J. Shuey and $2.02 million from the transit agency. Shuey quit TriMet shortly after the June 27 incident. The lawsuit says Shuey discriminated against Wigmore by referring to her in vulgar terms as an immigrant and telling her to "go home from where you came from" after she complained that he missed her stop. He then grabbed Wigmore from behind and knocked her to the floor. When Shuey forced her out the bus' door, she fell to the sidewalk. Mary Fetsch, TriMet spokeswoman, said Friday that agency officials had not seen the lawsuit and had no comment. Shuey, 48, could not be located for comment. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Multnomah County Circuit Court, alleges personal injury, a violation of civil rights and elder abuse. "As a direct result of defendants' misconduct, Ms. Wigmore suffered and endured extreme physical and mental pain and suffering," including a heart attack, broken ribs and soft-tissue damage, the lawsuit alleges. "I am still very, very bad," Wigmore said Friday of her health. The Beaverton woman referred further questions to her attorney. Co-counsel on the lawsuit is Elden M. Rosenthal, a prominent Portland civil rights lawyer who 15 years ago won a $12.5 million lawsuit against a national white supremacist group in the killing of an Ethiopian college student. "This is a terrible thing for her," Rosenthal said, declining to comment on specifics of the lawsuit. The lawsuit says the bus incident caused "a reopening of the psychic injuries" Wigmore suffered in Auschwitz ... Police reports offer this account of the June 27 incident: Wigmore boarded the eastbound No. 54/56 bus on Southwest Farmington Road near 99th Avenue and asked Shuey for directions. Unable to understand her accent, Shuey told her to sit down. Wigmore, who has ridden the bus routes around her Beaverton home for years, left her seat on Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway near 77th Avenue in the Raleigh Hills area to tell Shuey he missed her stop. That's when Shuey began yelling and grabbed her. According to the lawsuit, Shuey deprived Wigmore of her First Amendment right to speak without retaliation, her Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable seizure and her 14th Amendment right to be free from discrimination based on national origin. TriMet is to blame, the suit says, for "failing to hire and screen applicants for the position of bus driver who are psychologically fit to deal with the public." The transit agency also failed to train drivers to deal with passengers of diverse backgrounds, the suit alleges. Fetsch said Shuey did not have a history of complaints involving anger. She said customer service, along with safe driving, are TriMet's top concerns. At the time of the incident, Shuey told police that Wigmore wouldn't leave him alone and that he "lost it." In November, Shuey pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor harassment, and a Washington County Circuit judge sentenced him to two years' probation and required him to attend anger-management classes."

Jewish students to get rebate for Passover food,
by Daria Cameron, The Maneater, April 1, 2005
"Campus Dining Services will refund Jewish students who observe Passover $3.36 per meal during the weeklong holiday because they cannot eat non-kosher foods in the religious dining halls during the holiday. “I thought it was important to push for a refund so students could follow their religious beliefs without having to pay for meals that they weren’t using,” said Beth Lawrence, a Jewish senior who worked with Julaine Kiehn and Steve Simpson, director and assistant director of CDS, to plan the rebate. During Passover, an eight-day holiday from April 24 to May 1 in remembrance and celebration of the Jews’ escape from Egypt, observant Jews are not allowed to eat grain products leavened with yeast and anything prepared in the same dishes or kitchen as leavened grain products. That restriction limits bread, corn and corn syrup products and makes it difficult to eat in the dining halls, where foods are all prepared in the same non-kosher dishes. “There’s just not very many foods that we can eat during Passover,” Lawrence said. Lawrence transferred from the University of Iowa, where she said Jewish students are refunded all meals during Passover week. “When I came here my sophomore year, there was definitely not much to make Jewish students feel comfortable with their dining needs,” Lawrence said. “I think our goal should be that anyone could come here and feel taken care of.” CDS did offer some kosher foods in Eva J’s dining hall last year, but the foods, including matzo bread and chicken prepared and served in a separate dish, were not prepared in a kosher kitchen. This year, Lawrence researched Passover observances at other universities and worked with Kiehn and Simpson to create a mutual goal and compromise ... Lawrence estimated that only 25 to 30 students would take advantage of the Passover refund because she said there are not many strictly observant Jews on campus. Kerry Hollander, executive director of the Hillel Foundation, an organization that serves the needs of nearly 600 Jewish students at Columbia schools, said she is glad MU is accommodating its Jewish students."

Women to Receive Awards,
New Mexico Jewish Link, April 2005
"The State of Israel Golda Meir award, “the highest recognition for women of exceptional character and achievement,” established by the Israel Bonds Organization, will be bestowed upon four outstanding women leaders in New Mexico. The recipients — Linda Friedman Cole, Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish, Susan Seligman, and Congresswoman Heather Wilson — will receive their awards at a gala dinner on Monday, May 9 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 1000 Woodward Place NE ... “The New Mexico Jewish community joins me in expressing our delight that these four women, who have demonstrated outstanding character and leadership, will be honored with the State of Israel Golda Meir Award,” stated Harold Albert, state chairman, N.M., State of Israel Bonds. “In their lives and works our honorees have truly emulated the spirit of Israel’s late, great Prime Minister, and are richly deserving of this premier recognition,” he concluded. “The dinner will be held under the auspices of Golda Meir’s family,” said Leba Freed Pierce, dinner chair. “Alice Golembo, Meir’s grandniece and the evening’s special guest speaker, will represent the family at the tribute, and present the honorees with a replica of the brooch Meir wore every day while serving as Prime Minister of Israel,” she concluded. Linda Friedman Cole, a vice president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Albuquerque, was born in Milwaukee, Wis., and moved to New Mexico six years ago. Her involvement in the Jewish community started as a young woman. At 17, she went to Israel for the first time, and inspired by the trip and by the legacy of strong Jewish philanthropy set for her by her parents, Elaine and Sidney Friedman, she made the commitment to work for the survival of the Jewish people throughout the world. Cole met here husband, Laurence, on one of her many visits to Israel. They have since traveled the world visiting Jewish communities in Uzbekistan and the countries of the former Soviet Union, the Jewish communities of South America, and more recently the remaining Jewish communities in North Africa and Ethiopia ... Diane D. Denish is the first woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico. A lifelong New Mexican, Denish is the daughter of Libby Donley, a native of Carlsbad, and the late Jack Daniels, a New Mexico businessman and former State Representative. Raised in Hobbs, Denish has lived in Farmington and currently resides in Albuquerque. Darban and partners to buy German properties for €68m. The main tenants include Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post,
Globes (Israel), April 3, 2005
"Darban Investmens Ltd., a part of the Fishman group, has announced that on March 31, together with its partners, it completed the acquisition of six properties in Germany for €68 million. Darban said the buildings' occupancy rate was currently 70%, and that most of the leases were for 10-15 years. The main tenants are Deutsche Telekom, Deutsche Post, Deutsche Postbank, and Deutsche Bahn AG (German Railways). Darban has taken a €51 million non-recourse loan at 4.39% interest to finance the purchases. The deal includes another building still under construction at an estimated cost of €4.9 million.

Pope demonstrated particular sensitivity to Jewish issues,
by Mark McDonald, Knight-Ridder, April 3, 2005
"Pope John Paul II was widely acclaimed for his unprecedented outreach to other religions. He was, for example, the first pope to pray in a mosque and a synagogue. He was particularly sensitive to Jewish issues, a concern that grew out of his distress at Polish anti-Semitism and the harsh treatment of Jews in Poland during World War II. The future pope was a university student and seminarian in Krakow during the war. Tadeusz Jakubowicz, the leader of the Jewish community in Krakow, paid tribute to the pope on Sunday, calling him "the great apostle of reconciliation between Catholics and Jews." In an interview with Knight Ridder, Jakubowicz said, "If John Paul II had been the pope 60 or 70 years ago, the Holocaust wouldn't have happened." Jakubowicz managed to survive the Krakow ghetto, as well as the Plaszow work camp that was central to the film "Schindler's List." He said he also spent two years living in a forest, helped by Polish Catholics."
[Again, follow the link below and note the extraordinary amount of attention Jews are are awarded in a PBS film reviewing the Pope's life. Kiss Jewish butt = good. Stand up for traditional Catholicism = evil. There is no mention below that pre-World-War II, Jews virtually owned Poland. Also note that Poles are, as always, categorically condemned as "anti-Semites," with no reference whatsoever to Jewish power, exploitation, and anti-goyim racism in that country. Below, for all he had doen, the young Pope is portrayed as not having kissing Jewish butt ENOUGH. Jews = holy saints. Poles = monsters. Pope = collected some points for Jews but was still tainted by endemic Polish "anti-Semitism."]
John Paul II: His life and papacy,
by John Barnes and Helen Whitney, PBS
"The Jews. We often encountered evasiveness surrounding the Pope's childhood experience with the Jews in Wadowice. Certain facts were put forward as proof that John Paul II had only had model relations with Jews: he and his father rented their apartment from a Jewish landlord. Karol Wojtyla went to school with Jews. Most importantly, as a boy, his closest friend was Jerzy Kluger, a Jewish boy from a wealthy local family. The Pope's lifelong friendship with Jerzy Kluger is always asserted as indisputable evidence that John Paul II never had to overcome any limitations in his relation to the Jews. Understandably, Poles would want to minimize the complexity, even the darkness of their relationships to Jews. But many--not all, but many--Jews would also make an exception of Wadowice when they spoke to us. And the world at large has accepted the version of the Pope's idyllic hometown where Poles and Jews got along just fine. There seems to be reluctance on everyone's part to suggest the possibility of the Pope having been contaminated by the faintest breath anti-Semitism. In truth, the Wadowice of his childhood was a model of Polish anti-Semitism as well as offering him examples of cooperation. Later, as a student in Krakow, during the Nazi Occupation, Karol Wojtyla would have been witness to the murder of Jews in the street. He would have known about the outright treachery of those who turned Jews in for food. He knew about the silence of the Church during the Holocaust and after--the silence that persisted even in 1968 when renewed hostilities forced 38,000 Jews to flee Poland. As we came to our project, Darcy O'Brien published The Hidden Pope. Though it features the story of John Paul II's friendship with Jerzy Kluger, it also contains a remarkable amount of new research on anti-Semitism in their childhood Wadowice, in Catholic Christianity and in the Vatican. But Darcy O'Brien died suddenly in the spring of 1998, just as he was to start his publicity tour. We could not interview him for the film. If Jerzy Kluger had been more willing, his interview might have helped evoke the rich detail and complexity of O'Brien's portrait of the Catholic-Jewish world in 1920's Wadowice. But Mr. Kluger had told his stories one too many times. He was impatient, even unwilling, to set familiar scenes with new words. The balance had shifted for him. It had become his story, perhaps naturally enough, but from our point view, he couldn't serve as a conduit for O'Brien's original research. From his first years, Karol Wojtyla was intimate with the dark side of Poland's anti-Semitism. As Pope, he has worked hard to recognize and eradicate such prejudice. In the documentary, our question is not what Wojtyla did, but why it took him so long to act and whether he had gone far enough. Here we want to explore new biographical materials we could not include in the film and speculate on the psychological rather than the moral springs of the Pope's behavior."
[A Church leader who DOESN'T kiss Jewish butt gets this: an Israeli paper frames Jerusalem's Greek Orthodox Patriarch's "anti-Semitism" as a virtual crime. The controversy below doesn't have anything to do with "anti-Semitism," but rather controversial real estate under his reign sold to Jewish exploiters.]
Calls for Anti-Semitic Church Patriarch to Quit,
Israel National News, April 3, 2005
"Twenty-seven leading Greek Orthodox Church figures have signed a public letter calling upon Church Patriarch Irineos to resign. Irineos is considered an anti-Semite and a friend of the late Arafat ... The main issue at present is the recent sale or long-term leasing by the Church of two Jaffa Gate hotels and neighboring shops to Jewish interests. Irineos has said that he did not authorize the deals: "If any property transfer deals have been made, they are invalid... I did not sign anything." However, Nicholas Papedemes, Irineos' trusted financial advisor until just recently, has presented a power of attorney signed by Irineos. In the document, Irineos grants Nicholas the power to carry out financial deals, including the permanent leasing of properties. "The Patriarch was aware of all the details of the deal," Papedemes told a Greek newspaper. This deal, which aroused much opposition within the Church, was merely the "final drop" for many in the Church in terms of Irineos. "From the day he was elected," one of the 27 signatories told Cohen, "we were very tolerant of him. His personality is very strange. He likes to take vengeance. He trusts no one, not even his supporters. We all have many stories of bad relations with him. The Patriarch is incapable of retaining good relations with anyone for a long period." "Irineos works only with thieves," the Church figure continued. "We are afraid to think to where we can deteriorate if he continues in his position. Every honest person who worked with him was fired or resigned." As examples, he mentioned financial advisor Bishop Dr. Cyprianus Milidonis, who was forced to leave to Cyprus, and Bishop Martinius, "another honest person who worked closely with Irineos, but the great differences of opinion between them led to his being unable to tolerate Irineos' behavior, and he left for Greece." The senior Church figure, whose name is being withheld at his request, also alluded to financial corruption by Irineos: "Now he tells us that there's no money, but we don't believe him. As Greeks, we know how to make money in all circumstances, and to subsist. Here, it's already been six months that we haven't received salaries from him, and still we continue to work, get money somehow, and we live... The Patriarchate has very much money. Irineos has no faith or fear of God, and so he decided to use the Church's money as his own." The Greek Orthodox Church numbers about 100,000 faithful, most of them Arabs, and is considered the richest church in Israel. As head of the church, Irineos has responsibility for its extensive land holdings. These include the land on which the Knesset was built, the Prime Minister’s and the President’s official residences, parts of Jerusalem’s wealthiest neighborhoods, and locations in the Old City and in the new Jerusalem neighborhood of Har Homa. Three months ago, Irineos withdrew a four-million shekel lawsuit he had filed against the Maariv newspaper. The suit was filed over a series of articles between December 2002 and January 2004 claiming that Irineos had taken anti-Semitic stances. The evidence against Irineos included two personal letters he wrote to the late arch-terrorist Yasser Arafat. On July 17, 2001, Irineos wrote, "You [Arafat] are aware of the sentiments of disgust and disrespect that all the Holy Sepulchre fathers are feeling for the descendants of the crucifiers of our Lord... actual crucifiers of your people, Sionists [sic] Jewish conquerors of the Holy Land of Palestine." He then asks Arafat for his support, promising that if he is elected head of the church, "rest assured, Mr. President, that the rights of our most beloved Palestinian people on the Holy City of Jerusalem will find the most 'hot' supporter."
[The dead Pope's body is still warm and a Jew is quick to step on top of it to start frisking Catholic pockets.]
Pope Dead; Give Israel and the Jews Their Property,
by Ariel Natan Pasko, Israel National News, April 3, 2005
"Karol Wojtyla, better known as Pope John Paul II, it is said, had good relations with Jews back in his native Poland, in the "old days". And although I might not be the most in favor of inter-religious dialogue (I believe religions exist because of their differences and blurring those differences is an untruth), this Pope had done much to further good Catholic-Jewish relations. That's why I'm calling on the Catholic Church to open up the Vatican vaults and return all the stolen Jewish property that they have confiscated over the centuries - to honor the memory of those "good" relations Pope John Paul II fostered. Vast libraries of rare stolen Jewish books (and often unique manuscripts) exist in the Vatican. How do I know? Because, occasionally scholars (Jewish or otherwise) are allowed access to them, to do research. The Vatican is so morally corrupt, that it's not embarrassed to admit that they have the stolen goods, and even relishes the opportunity to show them off (to the "right" scholars) at times. Mind you, not all scholars have access to the Vatican's archives, but access isn't the issue, in any case. Justice and restoration of property rights is the issue. At a time when Eastern European governments in the post-Communist era are grappling with the return of Jewish art and other property to its rightful owners (property that was stolen from Jews during the Nazi and Communist eras), how can the Vatican sit in self-righteous thievery and turn a deaf ear to the demand to return to the Jewish people its rightful inheritance? The last thousand years of Church history is strewn with blood libels, riots, pogroms, expulsions and the most evil murderous attacks against Jewish communities, many of which were carried out under the behest of local parish priests. Inquisitions, forced conversions, outright murder - these are the memories that the Jewish people carry with them of Christian "love". Why compound these sins by stealing the Jews' heritage as well? Though there were numerous book (Jewish holy book) burning parties sponsored by the Catholic Church in 12-15th century Europe, of which the Talmud was a favorite; often the ransacked Jewish libraries were carted off; and many made their way to the Vatican. Though the Church didn't want Jews to have their "divine knowledge", somehow they sensed something special in those books and couldn't bring themselves to destroy them all. The same holds true for other Jewish ritual objects, such as menorahs, Torah scrolls, etc. It has even been rumored that the Church inherited vessels stolen from the destroyed Jerusalem Temple, from the Roman Empire-era conquest of Judea. Israel has an appropriate address for restitution, the National Library at the Givat Ram campus of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. It's about time the Catholic Church repent, admit its sins, open up its vaults to inspection, return the stolen property, ask forgiveness and promise never to do such a horrendous thing again. This type of cultural pillage can never be tolerated, not against Jews and not against others. Nothing less should be expected from a so-called "religious" institution. Now is the time, when "Mr. Infallible" has just died, that the Vatican can take the plunge to right a wrong that's been perpetrated against the Jewish people for too long. Karol Wojtyla is no more. His cronies at the Vatican should do the right thing and order the return of the stolen loot to its rightful inheritors. Show everyone how John Paul II influenced you. It might be harder than turning Mother Teresa into a saint, but it will get you much needed credit from the "World of Truth".
Family did not plan civil suit,
The Bosh, April 2, 2005
"Larry Feldman, an attorney who has represented Michael Jackson's accuser took the stand Friday, telling jurors he has never been asked to file a lawsuit against Jackson but acknowledging the boy could file a civil lawsuit against Jackson until he turns 20. The accuser is now 15. Feldman was called by the prosecution to testify about how the alleged molestation came to the attention of authorities; the defense tried to use his appearance to show that the accuser and his family were after money. Feldman said he ceased to represent the family of Jackson's current accuser in about October 2003, but has met with the boy's mother since then and has represented the family in trying to keep records about them from being released to defense attorneys, including bank records for the accuser's grandparents. He said he was not paid for the work reports. Feldman was permitted to tell jurors about a previous accusation against Jackson in 1993 by another boy who was represented by Feldman and who won a monetary settlement. Jurors were not told how much the boy was paid, but Feldman said there was no trouble collecting it. That figure has been reported to be millions of dollars."

Lost tribe dreams of return to Israel after 2,700 years in exile,
By Ian MacKinnon, Times (UK), April 2, 2005
"Indians descended from Joseph seek new homeland. A GROUP of 7,000 Indians who believe that they belong to a fabled “lost
tribe” expect to emigrate to Israel after being recognised as descendants of the ancient Israelites. Sephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar has acknowledged the status of the Bnei Menashe people and will send a team of rabbinical judges to a remote corner of northeast India, next to Burma, to convert themto Judaism. The conversions will ensure that the group who claim to be “children of the tribe of Manasseh, a son of Joseph” will be able to emigrate to Israel under the Jewish Law of Return. It will allow them to circumvent an Interior Ministry ban imposed on the Bnei Menashe Indians two years ago. The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, a group of evangelical Christians who work for Jewish causes, has already agreed to
underwrite the cost of the Orthodox conversions of the Bnei Menashe to facilitate their migration to Israel. A rabbinical court delegation dispatched by Rabbi Amar last year to assess the Bnei Menashe claim presented its report this week. The Chief Rabbi decided not to recognise Indians from the Mizoram and Manipur regions as Jewish, but did accept evidence of their Jewish descent. Yoel Ilan, who left Mizoram for Israel before the ban on the Indians was imposed, is delighted for his compatriots but remains cautious. “We’ve no doubt about our Jewishness,” said Mr Ilan, 35, who changed his name from Lalram Chhuana. “At last the Chief Rabbi has accepted us. But the Government may still have a say.” Most of the two million Chinlung people living in Mizoram and Manipur say they are descendants of one of ten “lost tribes” of Israel exiled 2,700 years ago by the Assyrian conquerors. They settled in the remote Indo-Burmese jungles after travelling through Iraq, Afghanistan and southern China. After forsaking animism and converting to Christianity more than a century ago, most remained true to their new faith despite a fierce belief in their Jewish roots. A handful went further and began adopting Judaism in the 1970s after seeing the traditions of their ancestors mirrored in the Old Testament ... Rather than dwell on the veracity of the Bnei Menashe’s historical claims, Rabbi Avichail changed tack. By enabling them to undergo recognised conversions in Mizoram, he hoped the Jewish state would be forced to accept them under the Israeli law that confers automatic right of citizenship on all Jews. The mission to India established sufficient credible links to allow the conversions by a rabbinical court. One of the team, Rabbi Eliyahu Birnboim, said: “We know they’re descendants of the Jewish people, and we want the state of Israel to help them move here.” Rabbi Avichail pointed out that the conversions would be necessary, not because of uncertainty over their claim to be Jewish descendants but simply because of social traditions they observed. “The conversion is necessary, not because there’s any doubt that they are descendants of Manasseh, but because of complex religious rules about the relations of men and women.”
Rabbi defends con man,
Edmonton Sun (Canada), April 2, 2005
"A man who bilked a cancer survivor out of her family business begged for a conditional sentence yesterday. Character witnesses, including his rabbi and other congregation members and friends, praised Sandy Hutchens as a devout orthodox Jew and a family man with three kids. Last spring, the 45-year-old pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud and one count of drug trafficking in prescription painkillers last spring. The judge will sentence Hutchens on April 8."

Microsoft sues Israeli spammer,
by Kenneth Henry, Pocket Lint (UK), February 28, 2005
"Microsoft made quite a few announcements a few months ago about beefing up its anti-spam technology, but today took its legal side of the fight to another continent by suing one of the biggest spammers in Israel. Microsoft is convinced that Amir Gans, head of New Approach a marketing firm, has sent around 10 million junk emails and could be sending as much as half of all Israeli spam."By filing this lawsuit, we want to deter individuals, especially high-profile spammers such as Mr Gans, and persuade them to discontinue their spam activities," said Horacio Gutierrez, associate general counsel for Microsoft in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in a statement. Microsoft said it had filed complaints about 10 alleged spammers with European public authorities: "We have sent nearly 70 cease and desist letters to as many spammers, and our experience tells us that in Europe spammers do stop once they are sued or under the threat of being sued. "Of course, there may be a replacement for Mr Gans the day after he stops--if he goes quietly, but the Redmond giant has the time and money to continue the direct approach until its own-branded privacy/antivirus suite is ready."

Bush Picks Chairman of Economic Council,
Yahoo! News, April 2, 2005
" Federal Reserve Board member Ben Bernanke is moving to the White House staff as chairman of President Bush's Council of Economic Advisers. Bernanke would succeed Harvey Rosen, who has served as chairman since the departure of N. Gregory Mankiw earlier this year. The three-member council gives economic advice to the president. Bernanke has been considered one of the leading candidates to succeed Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan when he steps down from the Fed on Jan. 31. However, some analysts questioned whether Bush would tap Bernanke to serve as head of the economic council if he meant to make him Fed chairman."

Documentary Offers Look at 'Last Mogul',
by Christy Lemire, Yahoo! News, April 2, 2005
"He's described both as a Genghis Khan and an elegant gentleman whose mantra was "dress British but think Yiddish," a Hollywood titan who "had the town by the scrotum" and died friendless at age 89. But the title of a new documentary about Lew Wasserman says it all. He was "The Last Mogul." The head of MCA and Universal, who enjoyed unprecedented power and kept company with presidents and glittering stars alike, is the subject of a film by writer-director Barry Avrich. It features interviews with dozens of people who knew and worked with Wasserman, including Jack Valenti, Michael Ovitz, Larry King, Sydney Pollack, Jimmy Carter and Helen Gurley Brown. Wasserman went from working as a doorman for mob-controlled speakeasies as a high schooler in Cleveland to shaping himself as the first real power-broker talent agent in Hollywood. During his 59 years with MCA, he changed the face of television by airing feature films and ushering in "movies of the week" and miniseries like "Roots." In the film world, he created Universal City and its famous studio tour and put Steven Spielberg on the map with "Jaws." He had hits with "National Lampoon's Animal House," "American Graffiti" and "The Sting," but passed on "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." He also helped Ronald Reagan get elected to the Screen Actors Guild presidency and the California governorship, and was a major fund-raiser for Bill Clinton."

With Fischer, Iceland makes a bad move,
by Alex Beam [Jewish?], Boston Globe, March 29,2005
"I happened to be vacationing here when chess legend Bobby Fischer flew into town. Fischer was, is -- perhaps ever shall be -- the biggest thing to hit modern Iceland. Because of his dramatic 1972 world championship chess upset of Boris Spassky at Reykjavik's Exhibition Hall, Fischer enjoys a status here rivaling only that of Leif Ericson, the famous Norwegian explorer hailed as a ''son of Iceland" for chauvinistic purposes. The newest ''son of Iceland," a freshly minted citizen created by a quick vote of the Icelandic parliament, was very much on display last week. ''Fischer Comes Home" was the improbable rubric used by Icelandic television for its saturation coverage of the prodigal hero's progress from his Tokyo detention cell to a luxury hotel in Reykjavik. The story line is broadly familiar: Persecuted by small-minded US bureaucrats for violating United Nations sanctions against Yugoslavia -- Fischer played Spassky there in a 1992 rematch -- the chess hero had been run to ground in Japan, which was on the verge of extraditing him to the United States. But plucky little Iceland rescued Fischer from the hated Bush administration warmongers, blah blah blah. Almost every assumption attached to Fischer's escape to Iceland is wrong. Fischer knowingly flouted United Nations sanctions against Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic's genocidal regime and accepted $3.65 million in prize money from a Milosevic crony. At a press conference, he boasted that he would never pay a penny to the US Treasury, and that in fact he hadn't paid any taxes since 1976. The warrant for his arrest dates to 1992 and spans the previous Bush and Clinton administrations. More disturbing, the world press has portrayed Fischer as a misguided, eccentric genius, given to popping off occasional, regrettable condemnations of world Jewry. ''That's Bobby," is the refrain heard from his supporters in Iceland, Japan, and elsewhere when he denounces the ''bandit state of Israel," or yammers on about the rights of the ''red man," as he calls the American Indian. (In a book prominently displayed in several Reykjavik bookstores, ''Bobby Fischer Goes to War," authors David Edmonds and John Eidinow reveal that both of Fischer's parents were Jewish and that he was not the product of a mixed marriage, as previously believed.) Here is a taste of the real Bobby Fischer, as profiled by Rene Chun in The Atlantic in 2002: '' The Jews are a 'filthy, lying bastard people,' bent on world domination through such insidious schemes as the Holocaust ('a money-making invention'), the mass murder of Christian children ('their blood is used for black-magic ceremonies'), and junk food (William Rosenberg, the founder of Dunkin' Donuts, is singled out as a culprit)." Here is an excerpt from a radio interview with Fischer broadcast in the Philippines, hailing the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001: ''This is all wonderful news," Fischer announced. ''I applaud the act. The US and Israel have been slaughtering the Palestinians, just slaughtering them for years. Robbing them and slaughtering them. Nobody gave a [expletive]. Now it's coming back to the US. [Expletive] the US. I want to see the US wiped out." The irony, which I suspect is lost on Fischer's sympathizers both at home and abroad, is that any number of countries in the world would be happy to clap Fischer in irons for hate speech. The United States, which he so loudly reviles, is not one of them. Iceland, it seems to me from an extremely short acquaintance, is an impressive country whose citizens have made many admirable decisions about how they choose to live. But lionizing Bobby Fischer is not one of them. Fischer is not a hero, and he is not a persecuted human rights refugee. He is a greedy, manipulative, deranged hatemonger who will be a blight on Icelandic society for years to come. My bet is that Icelanders -- the ''Icelandic creeps," as Fischer called them in 1972 -- will tire quickly of their ''honored guest" and find a reason to honor their extradition treaty with the United States, returning Bobby to his real home. The sad endgame of Bobby Fischer has begun."
ADL Commends Court's Dismissal of Constitutional Claims In Cupertino School Case,

"The Anti-Defamation League commends Federal District Court Judge James Ware for dismissing fifth-grade public school teacher Stephen Williams' claims that officials of the Cupertino school district, where he teaches, violated his free speech rights. According to press reports, parent complaints about Williams' distribution of religious materials in the classroom prompted the school's principal to require Williams to submit supplemental classroom materials for her review and prior approval. Williams claimed that this practice violated his First Amendment rights. These claims were rejected by the court. Williams' remaining claim asserts that his right to equal protection as a Christian has been violated. The court will consider this claim in the future."

Scholars Group Faults Biased Committee Report For Not Restoring Columbia University's Integrity,
U.S. Newswire, April 1, 2005
"Following is a statement from the Columbia Chapter of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East on the Ad Hoc Grievance Committee Report released yesterday by Columbia University: The Columbia Chapter of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME) expresses its dismay regarding the Ad Hoc Grievance Committee Report, which was released yesterday evening by the University. As members of the Columbia faculty, we have, over the course of the past 3 years, witnessed: 1. Systematic anti-Israel bias and breaches of academic integrity in curricula and course offerings, 2. Intimidation and humiliation of students because of their opinions regarding Israel, and 3. Abuse of the classroom as a platform for political propaganda and pressure. Last December, a committee was appointed to investigate charges of intimidation of students. At the time, we expressed our concern about the committee's composition and ability to conduct an unbiased and thorough investigation. We issued to the Trustees of the University a 30-page report "BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS OF THE COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION'S RESPONSE TO COLUMBIA UNBECOMING," in which we concluded: The new committee reports to Nicholas Dirks, the recently appointed Vice President of Arts and Sciences. Dirks is married to a faculty member in the Department of Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC), the department most frequently accused of bias and intimidation. In 2002, when he chaired the Department of Anthropology, he and 19 colleagues in that department initiated a petition calling on Columbia to divest itself from companies conducting business with Israel. Bollinger denounced the petition as "grotesque and offensive." However, Dirks, his wife, and two members of the new faculty committee, Jean Howard and Farah Jasmine Griffin, were among the 106 faculty members who signed it. Lisa Anderson was the dissertation sponsor of Joseph Massad, the faculty member most frequently named in the film and other incident reports. She has publicly stated that faculty members should have complete freedom to determine what they teach. Mark Mazower has publicly compared Israel to Nazi Germany. The remaining committee member, Ira Katznelson, has no glaring conflicts of interest but, as interim Vice President for Arts and Sciences in 2002 - 2004, took no action regarding the many incidents reported to him and subsequently described in the film. The incidents in the film are the tip of a rather large iceberg."

Congress Issues Statement on Columbia University's Committee Findings on Campus Anti-Semitism and Harassment,
Yahoo! Finance News, March 31, 2005
"American Jewish Congress Governing Council Chairman, Harley Lippman, and AJCongress General Counsel, Marc Stern, issued a statement today regarding the findings of the Columbia University committee charged with reviewing claims of anti-Semitism and harassment stemming from activity within its Middle Eastern studies department and some of its faculty. The statement is as follows: Despite earlier press reports to the contrary, Columbia's committee has verified some of the most serious student charges made against members of its Middle East Studies faculty. We agree with the committee that Columbia would be well served to have transparent procedures for handling student grievances. We would have still greater confidence in the results of the Committee's deliberations had the Committee not had a majority of members who have publicly called for divestment from Israel. Surely, there must be members of the Columbia faculty who have not taken public positions on the Middle East one way or the other who could have served with distinction. The continued insistence of the Committee, apparently by Columbia - and, given President Bollinger's quick acceptance of the report - that any inquiry into bias in the Curriculum and in classroom instruction would be a violation of academic freedom is, however, disturbing. The university, we are confident, would not take that attitude toward allegations of racial or gender bias. We yield to no one in our defense of academic freedom. Professors should be able to express criticism of Israel, even strong criticism of Israel, in their classrooms. Nevertheless, teachers do not have the right to turn their classrooms or their departments into soapboxes for their pet causes. There is an important line -- which needs to be policed -- between expressing an opinion and indoctrination which distorts facts." [Then it's obviously time to fire the monolithic censorial wall of Judeocentric pimps in academe who spew their classroom propaganda in hysterical defense of apartheid Israel.]

President, Ohlone College, Fremont, Caifornia. The world is at a most critical juncture in its history. Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Kashmir and Chechnya are among the countries experiencing bloody violence and conflict, which is creating hatred among communities, states and nations. In the process of
war in Iraq, over 1,450 Americans have been killed (as of mid-February) and about 10,000 wounded. According a survey in the British medical journal The Lancet, an estimated 100,000 Iraqi men, women and children have also been killed. The cost of the Iraq war is reaching over $200 billion. Another $80 billion has been requested by the administration. All this while, the number of terrorist attacks worldwide has dramatically increased. What is the future direction and role of the United States government and its leadership in addressing the world's upheaval? The symposium "War or Peace?" will explore ideas and strategies to help develop a national policy for improving our relationships and promote peace and harmony with Europe, the Middle East and Asian countries. What role can the American people and the private sector play to promote justice and peace among communities and nations? The proceedings of this conference will be distributed to congressional offices, think tanks, media organs and the White House.

[What is a "Jew" but a self-selected racial creed? Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, or anything else, even the religiously converted "Jew" still clings to his "birthright" Jewish identity. And does the world really need Judeocentrism at every gateway, including Christian churches?]
Jean-Marie Lustiger: Second Jewish Pope?,
By UWE SIEMON-NETTO, UPI Religion Editor, Washington Times, April 2, 1005
"France was stunned when Pope John Paul II named Jewish-born Jean-Marie Lustiger as archbishop of Paris. "You are the fruit of the Holy Father's prayer," the pontiff's secretary told him. Could it be that the cardinal-electors will now stun the world by choosing Lustiger as next pope, the first Jew to occupy St. Peter's See since Peter himself? Lustiger, both whose parents died in Auschwitz, has always insisted that, though he had converted to Christianity at age 14, he was and remained a Jew: "I was born a Jew and so I am. For me, the vocation of Israel is to bring light to the goyim. That's my hope, and I believe Christianity is the means for achieving it." There is a remarkable conversion dialectic in Lustiger's life. He had himself baptized because he was so impressed with the Catholic faith of his foster parents, who brought him up after his real parents had been deported from Paris in 1940. In return, Lustiger has made it his mission to convert -- or, rather, re-evangelize -- France and by extension Europe in an unorthodox way. While a parish priest, Lustiger wrote a memorandum to archbishop of Paris, Cardinal François Marty. In it he proposed a revolutionary strategy for bringing Christianity back to France, once called the First Daughter of the Church. He insisted the church must abandon any pretense of power and convert culture instead. As George Weigel, the pope's biographer, commented on this plan: "This meant taking the gospel straight to the molders and shapers of French high culture, the thoroughly secularized French intelligentsia. The hardest cases should be put first and France should be reconverted from the head down." According to Weigel, Lustiger believes this memorandum must have found its way to the Vatican and contributed to his promotions to bishop of Orleans in 1979, archbishop of Paris in 1981 and cardinal in 1983. If so, Lustiger's strategy is bearing fruit ... The French church, once an institution of immense power, has become a mission church, and her sisters in other part of the Continent are following her example. Indeed, that mission takes place chiefly in the once almost hopelessly secularized urban centers, where there are now first signs of a tender spiritual renewal. That, too, was Lustiger's brainchild. Since Europe's conversion has top priority for the Catholic Church, the election of this formidable preacher and thinker is still a possibility, even though, at 77, he is no longer of an ideal age -- and though popular superstition holds the last pope will be of Jewish descent and call himself Peter II."
[What on earth is "hate?" What is an "anti-Semitic message?' Is it when you dare to tell the truth? Alerting people to the fact that Jews dominate the pornography world? That they head the "Russian" mafia? That a band of Jewish oligarchs have looted post-communist Russia? Drawing attention to the fact that the "Chosen People" concept echoes the "Master Race" ideology? The accusation of "hate" in Jewish hands is a device to veil everything Jewry thinks and does that they condemn in others.]
On the hook. Police have become better at tracking down hate groups, but the laws and system in place for prosecuting suspects make convictions difficult. London has slipped from being a shining example of what works when dealing with hate crime to an example of what doesn't work,
by Randy Richmond, London Free Press (Canada), April 2, 2005
"Fighting hate in Canada isn't easy. "For a variety of reasons, It is quite frustrating," says Anita Bromberg, legal counsel for the Jewish advocacy group, B'nai Brith of Canada. First, police forces are inconsistent in their approach to evaluating hate crimes, keeping statistics and charging people, she says. Second, Attorney General offices across Canada show the same inconsistency in using the Criminal Code provisions on hate crime. Third, the law is vague and allows hate promoters too many loopholes, she says. Each year, the B'nai Brith prepares an audit of hate crime activity against Jews in Canada. Each audit shows inconsistency in how frontline police treat criminal acts. For example, in 2003, a police force in western Ontario -- Bromberg won't say exactly where -- found the word Jew spraypainted on a stop sign outside the house of a Jewish person. It was not classified as a hate incident. A similar incident occurred in central Ontario, where police did classify it as a hate crime. Another example: in 2003 a man named Brad Love sent anti-Semitic messages to Jewish people and groups such as the B'nai Brith. The B'nai Brith brought the complaints to Toronto police, who concluded there wasn't enough evidence to press charges. Similar letters were sent to individuals in York Region. That led to charges and a conviction against Love of wilfully promoting hatred in violation of the Criminal Code. Legal successes are few and far between. Of 857 hate incidents recorded against Jews in 2004, only 13 resulted in charges, the B'nai Brith reported in its most recent report. In the latest report, the B'nai Brith points to what it sees as a disturbing trend -- willingness of frontline officers to view hate crimes as not worthy of the trouble. "In one particularly glaring example, an investigating officer suggested that the swastikas found on a Jewish person's mailbox could well be meant as a symbol of peace, since that is the origin of the symbol before it was used by Nazi Germany," the 2004 audit reports. Other police units no longer report anti-Semitic graffiti as hate crime because it's so common ... The Criminal Code allows a huge loophole for accused to slip through, Bromberg adds. "If the statements were relevant to any subject of public interest, the discussion of which was for the public benefit, and if on reasonable grounds he [the accused] believed them to be true", the accused can beat the charges. That defence should be taken out of the Criminal Code, Bromberg says." ... THE LAWS Hate activities in Canada are outlawed by the Criminal Code, the Canadian Human Rights Act and provincial human rights codes. - Under Section 318 of the Criminal Code on hate propaganda, everyone who advocates or promotes genocide against a group distinguished by colour, race, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation is guilty of an offence. - Under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, public incitement of hatred, everyone who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group that could likely lead to a breach of the peace is guilty of an offence. - Under Section 319 (2), wilful promotion of hatred, everyone who, by communicating statements, other than in private conversation, wilfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group is guilty of an offence. - No one shall be convicted, according to the Criminal Code, if he or she establishes the statements are true; if the statements were relevant to the public interest and he or she believed them to be true ... SOLUTIONS? The B'nai Brith of Canada recommends several solutions to the difficulty citizens, police and prosecutors have in fighting hate. - Canada needs to create a uniform definition of hate crime that would help police, politicians and others understand and tackle the problem. - All major police forces in Canada should have dedicated hate crime units. - Dedicated hate crime Crown prosecutors, well-versed in hate crime legislation, should be in each jurisdiction. - Remove two of the defences to the offence of wilful promotion of hate. - Amend the Criminal Code to include holocaust denial as a hate crime. - Give judges guidelines to toughen sentences when racial hatred is a motivator. - Ban racist groups in Canada." [JTR note: Per banning "racist groups": Following this anti-"hate" argument, any full, open, non-censored, and rational examination of traditional Jewish identity, its Chosen People concept, Jewish history, the Talmud, modern apartheid Israel, and all the rest of its attendant crap should be sufficient to thereby ban "Jewish" ideology from public discourse.]

[Why "explain" "anti-Semitism?" That's not what the Jewish Lobby wants. They really want anything unflattering to be bulldozed. Where are all the similar signs on all synagogues to contextualize Jewish self-segregation, exploitation, racism, and anti-goyim attitudes throughout history?]
Sign explains anti-Semitic statue,
Big News Network, April 2, 2005
"A German city plans to put up a sign to explain an anti-semitic sculpture on its 650-year-old Cathedral. The Judensau at Regensburg Cathedral depicts a Jew suckling a pig and was a common motif in Christian churches during the Middle Ages. For many years, the unobtrusive sculpture was unmarked with guides left to explain it, Deutsche Welle reports. While members of the Jewish community and Catholic leaders agreed to the compromise, a Munich artist brought more attention to the sculpture. Wolfram Kastner held protests at the cathedral, saying that the statue and others like it have caused murder, robberies and degradation and that neo-Nazis still use the expression Judensau. Now, the Jewish and Catholic communities have agreed to a sign that says the statue needs to be considered in its historical context. Nowadays, the relationship between Christians and Jews is one of tolerance and respect, the text adds. Deutsche Welle reports that Catholics appear to find the wording more satisfactory than Jews do. But the newspaper says that Regensburg's Jewish community is growing thanks to an influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe and most members say they feel at home in the city."

Berger Pleads Guilty to Taking Materials,
Earthlink (from Associated Press), April 1, 2005
"Former national security adviser Sandy Berger, who once had unfettered access to the government's most sensitive secrets, pleaded guilty Friday to sneaking classified documents out of the National Archives, then using scissors to cut up some of them. Rather than the "honest mistake" he described last summer, Berger acknowledged to U.S. Magistrate Deborah Robinson that he intentionally took and deliberately destroyed three copies of the same document dealing with terror threats during the 2000 millennium celebration. He then lied about it to Archives staff when they told him documents were missing. "Guilty, your honor," Berger responded Friday when asked how he pleaded. Robinson did not ask Berger why he cut up the materials and threw them away at the Washington office of his Stonebridge International consulting firm. Berger, accompanied by his wife, Susan, did not offer an explanation when he addressed reporters outside the federal courthouse following the hearing. "It was a mistake and it was wrong," he said, refusing to answer questions. Noel Hillman, chief of the Justice Department's public integrity section, would not discuss Berger's motivation, but said the former national security adviser understood the rules governing the handling of classified materials. Berger only had copies of documents; all of the originals remain in the government's possession, Hillman said. The charge of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material is a misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of a year in prison and up to a $100,000 fine. However, under a plea agreement that still must be approved by Robinson, Berger would serve no jail time but pay a $10,000 fine, surrender his security clearance for three years and cooperate with investigators. Security clearance allows access to classified government materials. Sentencing was set for July 8. The court appearance was the culmination of a bizarre episode in which Berger, who once had access to the government's most sensitive intelligence, was accused of sneaking documents out of the Archives, which houses the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and other cherished and top-secret documents. The Bush administration disclosed the investigation in July, just days before the Sept. 11 commission issued its final report. Democrats claimed the White House was using Berger to deflect attention from the harsh findings, with their potential for damaging President Bush's re-election prospects. After news of the probe surfaced, Berger acknowledged he left the National Archives on two occasions in 2003 with copies of documents about the government's anti-terror efforts and notes that he took on those documents. He said he was reviewing the materials to help determine which Clinton administration documents to provide to the commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks. He called the episode "an honest mistake" and denied criminal wrongdoing. Berger and his lawyer, Lanny Breuer, have said that Berger knowingly removed the handwritten notes by placing them in his jacket and pants and inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio. He returned two copies of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration. The Associated Press first reported in July that the Justice Department was investigating Berger. The disclosure prompted Berger to step down as an adviser to the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry."

After apologizing to victim, accused pimp gets jail time,
by Russell Ben-Ali, Newark Star-Ledger, March 11, 2005
"In a final attempt to convince a federal judge of his remorse, Lev Trakhtenberg turned to the woman who had accused him of forcing her into a life of prostitution and strip club dancing. "I am ashamed," Trakhtenberg, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Russia, told U.S. District Court Judge Denise Cote. Then, turning toward his accuser, Anna Boudekova, he said, "I am ashamed. ... I'm sorry, Anna. I've made awful mistakes and terribly wrong choices." Trakhtenberg, who pleaded guilty in November to a single charge of conspiracy to commit extortion for forcing Boudekova into prostitution in 1999, was sentenced yesterday to 42 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. In addition, Cote ordered him to pay $10,000 in restitution to his victim, an amount that includes her legal fees and income losses. Trakhtenberg, who is a defendant at the center of a separate case in Newark involving human trafficking and forced labor, was indicted on the New York charge last August. He was accused of forcing Boudekova into prostitution after she failed to pay the $200 daily fee he and his associates attempted to extort from her earnings as a dancer in a strip club. Trakhtenberg insisted she owed the money to repay transportation costs to the United States and other fees he had advanced her, a claim she denied yesterday. "The money went one way, from me to Mr. Trakhtenberg, and the threats started when it slowed down," Boudekova told the court prior to the sentence. Before sentencing, defense attorney David Lewis asked the judge to consider Trakhtenberg's record in his Brooklyn community and the letters of support from friends and associates who cited his business, DGL Enterprises Inc., which promoted Russian cultural events, and his activism on behalf of Soviet Jews ... In the Newark case, authorities said, Trakhtenberg filed false visa applications to smuggle at least 25 Russian women into the U.S., claiming they were performers in Russian cultural events he'd legally promoted over the years. FBI agents arrested Trakhtenberg in Brooklyn in August 2002. Agents also detained his wife, Viktoriya I'Lina, and Sergey Malchikov, a former boxer who drove the women to strip clubs throughout central New Jersey. Each was charged in federal court in Newark with conspiracy, forced labor, trafficking with respect to forced labor and conspiracy to commit extortion. Authorities said the three threatened the women with violence, or to harm their families back in Russia if they did not dance nude six days a week in several central New Jersey locations. They were forced to perform nude lap dances and were ordered to turn over $1,200 each week from their earnings, whether they made that much or not."
The selling of lot 62,
by Meron Rapaport, Haaretz (Israel), March 31, 2005
"Action and spy games, money and luxury cars - that's what he wanted from life. But when Mohammed Maraga got mixed up in buying land for Ateret Kohanim in East Jerusalem, he got much more than he bargained for. At 11:30 P.M., on the highway from New York to Atlantic City, sitting in a limousine with a Jewish lawyer and two Russian hookers, Mohammed Maraga suddenly understood that his Jewish partners had defrauded him. The people who for the past four years had been his second, hidden family; with whom he had deceived his real family and his neighbors; together with whom he had lied, posed and built a residential tower contrary to every known law; at whose expense he had enjoyed himself, traveled abroad, ridden in luxury cars, been with hookers (with or without his partners) - these people, who were associated with the Ateret Kohanim association, had cheated him. His dream of starting a new life in Canada - far from Silwan, the village adjacent to the Old City of Jerusalem where he was born; far from the Israelis and the Arabs and their endless quarrels, from which he had made a pretty good living all these years - had collapsed in an instant. He wishes such a collapse will be the fate of the shiny six-story building that Maraga himself built for the Jews in the heart of Silwan, towering over the two-story buildings of the shabbiest neighborhood in East Jerusalem. The story of Mohammed Maraga is not one of an innocent, righteous man. Far from it. His record includes a court conviction and five months in prison for using falsified receipts. He himself admits that he sold the same house to two different groups and was privy to the falsification of the purchase papers of a lot and building in Silwan. (Ateret Kohanim says he worked alone; his, Ateret Kohanim says; he did what his masters asked, his lawyer says.) He owes people and organizations tens of thousands of shekels. And this is only a partial list. But beyond all that, Maraga's story is the story of a person who tried to attach himself to strong people in order to feel strong himself, who was so fond of the action and the spy games and the crossing of lines that he himself didn't know how to draw the line. Or maybe this is the story of a victim, of someone who wanted to play the game but was nevertheless preyed upon by others, a weak person whom a cash-rich association like Ateret Kohanim fished out of the refuse heap and made a key pawn in its effort to acquire another apartment and another building and another lot in the heart of a teeming Arab neighborhood, all without regard for the law and of course without regard for the implications its actions would have for someone like Maraga. So, while the sign on the door of one of the apartments in the building for Jews that Maraga built in Silwan says, "Forget it, paradise is here," Maraga is living with three workers in a room in Eilat, remote, conflicted and effectively cut off from his wife and three children, and working for his living from morning to evening as a painter in the city's hotels for NIS 3,500 a month. "I was a king," he says. "Now I'm nothing." The Maragas are a large, respected Jerusalem family. They also have a political lineage. The cousin of Zakariya, Maraga's father, is no other than Abu Moussa, who rebelled against Yasser Arafat in Lebanon during the 1980s. Maraga's close family are considered supporters of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and many of them spent years in Israeli prisons, a few of them, ironically, for attacking collaborators. One of his cousins was sentenced to more than 100 years in prison for the murder of five collaborators and his brother was incarcerated for seven years for assaulting collaborators ... After a year and a half with Unit 504, he says, he started to work in the Shin Bet security service (the Shin Bet says in response that it does not confirm or deny people working for it). Money, Maraga says, was not the issue. In Unit 504 he didn't get money at all, and the Shin Bet gave him only NIS 1,500 a month. The profit was from a different source. "I felt secure, I knew that, come what may, if I got into a mess and my family couldn't help, I had the help of the big people in this country," he says ... That evening he set out for Atlantic City in a luxury limo with the two Russian hookers and a Jewish lawyer named Shapiro. At 11:30 P.M. New York time, 6:30 A.M. the next morning in Israel, he called home to wake up the kids for school. His wife answered. "We were thrown out of the house," she shouted all the way from Silwan to Atlantic City. "You sold your children and you went to live it up in America." It was only then that Maraga discovered that someone had violated the agreement. That night, Ateret Kohanim people, escorted by hundreds of police and Border Police, entered Silwan, seized the apartment that had been purchased from the Asala family at the bottom of the street and then entered the six-story building and told Maraga's wife to get out immediately with her three children." Churches warn Israel over Jerusalem,
Al-Jazeera, April 1, 2005
"The World Council of Churches (WCC) has called on Israel to halt all measures that would prevent Jerusalem becoming a city sharing sovereignty and citizenship between the Jews and a future Palestine on Friday on the Geneva-based WCC's Web site from its international affairs commission expressing alarm at what it called Israeli actions that would pre-determine the status of the city under any peace accord. These actions, the letter said, threatened the achievement of a just peace between Israel and the Palestinians "by pre-empting negotiations on the final status of Jerusalem within the framework of international law." Unilateral plans While world attention was focused on the Israeli plans to withdraw from Gaza, the letter said, the government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon "has intensified unilateral programmes to consolidate control over Jerusalem and other occupied territory". These included construction of a wall, which Israel calls a protection barrier, cutting off the whole of eastern Jerusalem from the West Bank, and effectively forcing Palestinians out of the city by threats and a new property law. The WCC, which links 347 Christian churches in more than 120 countries, "calls for an open and inclusive Jerusalem, a city of shared sovereignty and citizenship, a city of two peoples and three faiths, of Christians, Muslims and Jews," the letter said."
CHABAD DECLARES MODERN JUDAISM TO BE ‘NOT A RELIGION'. Chief Rabbi of Russia States the Faith of Majority of World Jews to be ‘Opposite to Torah’ and a ‘Club’; Reform/Progressive Rabbis Worldwide Seek Apology and Dialogue,
Religion News Service, March 31, 2005
"In a coordinated response from Jewish leadership around the globe, the World Union for Progressive Judaism – representing the largest body of affiliated religious Jews – today condemned statements that strongly disturbed the world Jewish community. In an article authored by Rabbi Berl Lazar, the Chief Rabbi of Russia for Chabad-Lubavitch, it was stated unequivocally that Reform Judaism (also known as Progressive Judaism) is ‘not a religion’. Reform Judaism represents the faith of the majority of North American Jews. Rabbi Lazar’s article was printed in the February ’05 issue of “L’Chayim,” the lead magazine of the Chabad-controlled Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FEOR). With a total circulation of 84,000 and a motto of ‘Connecting All Jews As They Are’, the magazine published an article by Rabbi Lazar which stated: “Reform Judaism…personifies an approach…which is opposite to the approach of the Torah. Reform Judaism can’t be labeled as religion if we take religion seriously! Indeed, religion is trusting in God, reverential trust, understanding of the concept that all the human actions should follow the commandments of God. Reform Judaism treats the Torah as an anthology of laws created by man for his own convenience. God has no place. What Reform Judaism is are clubs to meet their interests and it seems odd to me that the directors of these clubs call themselves ‘Rabbis’.” Quotes Rabbi Uri Regev, Executive Director for the World Union for Progressive Judaism, noted: “It is regrettable that Chabad - which professes to ‘connect all Jews as they are’ - so easily returns to its old, hateful bashing of Reform Judaism. It is bad enough for a sectarian religious movement to lose sight of Klal Yisrael - but it is totally unacceptable when it comes from the leader of a movement that claims to be representative of all Russian Jewry. We hope that Rabbi Lazar will re-evaluate his partisan religious concepts and expect leading international and North American Jewish organizations to take note of his public views and draw the necessary conclusions. A movement guided by such views cannot be a partner to pluralistic, inclusive Jewish organizations such as the Presidents Conference of Major Jewish Organizations and the American Jewish Congress, who have been approached by Chabad in recent times. Reform Judaism does not need Rabbi Lazar to validate its Jewish authenticity - Rabbi Lazar needs to partner with Reform Judaism if his claim for wide representation is to be taken with any shred of credibility. The World Union for its part will continue to serve the wider Jewish community through the congregational, youth, and educational work of its constituents in 41 countries based on a commitment to tolerance, Jewish renewal and human dignity.” Rabbi Eric Yoffie, President of the Union for Reform Judaism stated: “Rabbi Lazar cannot request American Jewish support for his work and profess to speak in the name of all Russian Jews while simultaneously proclaiming that Reform Judaism is not Judaism and Reform rabbis are not rabbis. He is speaking the language of a Chabad functionary and not of a Russian Jewish leader.”... The full text of Rabbi Lazar’s article (in translation) may be found at www.wupj.org."

Papal candidate gives pro-Zionist talk
by Sam Ser, Jerusalem Post, March 31, 2005
"A cardinal considered a candidate to succeed Pope John Paul II delivered a strong message in favor of Jewish settlement in the Holy Land on Wednesday night, rejecting the claim that European Christians' support for the State of Israel is based on Holocaust guilt and saying that all Christians should affirm Zionism as a biblical imperative for the Jewish people. Archbishop of Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, part of a visiting Austrian delegation, made the remarks in an address at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on the topic of "God's chosen land." After asking, "What does Eretz Yisrael [the Land of Israel] mean to us," Schoenborn answered by stressing the doctrinal importance to Christians of not only recognizing Jews' connection to the land, but also ensuring that Christian identification with the Jewish Bible not lead to a "usurpation" of Jewish uniqueness. "Only once in human history did God take a country as an inheritance and give it to His chosen people," Schoenborn said, adding that Pope John Paul II had himself declared the biblical commandment for Jews to live in Israel an everlasting covenant that remained valid today. Christians, Schoenborn said, should rejoice in the return of Jews to the Holy Land as the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. A Palestinian priest challenged the cardinal on that point, asking how he could preach to his Palestinian congregation that the establishment of the modern Jewish state was not a "catastrophe," as they called it, or the result of European powers' guilty conscience following World War II. Schoenborn responded by saying that "I am myself a refugee" – at the end of World War II, when he was an infant, Schoenborn's parents fled to Austria from Czechoslovakia – and that he felt pained at the unrecognized injustice that thousands of Czechs had suffered. However, he said, both that case and the Arab-Israeli conflict were matters of international law, whereas the chosenness of the Jewish people and their inheritance in the Holy Land were matters of faith that date back to the Bible itself."
Mossad local assistants or sayanim operating in western countries,
Feral News (extracted from 'By Way of Deception' by Victor Ostrovsky [pp. 86-9], - Ostrovsky, Victor and Hoy, Claire, St.Martin's Press, 1990)
"Alan's lecture was followed by one on technical cooperation between agencies, in which we learned that the Mossad had the best capability of all for cracking locks. Various lock manufacturers in Great Britain, for example, would send new mechanisms to British intelligence for security testing; they in turn sent them on to the Mossad for analysis. The procedure was for our people to analyze it, figure out how to open it, then send it back with a report that it's "impregnable." After lunch that day, Dov L. took the class out to the parking lot where seven white Ford Escorts were parked. On Israel, most Mossad, Shaback, and police cars are white, although the head of Mossad then drove a burgundy Lincoln Town Car.) The idea was to learn how to detect if you were being followed by a car. It's something you practice again and again. There's no such thing as you see in the movies or read in books about little hairs on the back of your neck standing up and telling you somebody is behind you. It's something you learn only by practice, and more practice. Each night when we went home, and each day when we left home for school, it was still our responsibility to make, sure we weren't being followed. The next day Ran S. delivered a lecture on the sayanim, a unique and important part of the Mossad's operation. Sayanim "assistants" must be 100 percent Jewish. They live abroad, and though they are not Israeli citizens, many are reached through their relatives in Israel. An Israeli with a relative in England, for example, might be asked to write a letter saying the person bearing the letter represents an organization whose main goal is to help save Jewish people in the diaspora. Could the British relative help in any way? There are thousands of sayanim around the world. In London alone, there are about 2,000 who are active, and another 5,000 on the list. They fulfill many different roles. A car sayan, for example, running a rental agency, could help the Mossad rent a car without having to complete the usual documentation. An apartment sayan would find accommodation without raising suspicions, a bank sayan could get you money if you needed it in the middle of the night, a doctor sayan would treat a bullet wound without reporting it to the police, and so on. The idea is to have a pool of people available when needed who can provide services but will keep quiet about them out of loyalty to the cause. They are paid only costs. Often the loyalty of sayanim is abused by katsas who take advantage of the available help for their own personal use. There is no way for the sayan to check this. One thing you know for sure is that even if a Jewish person knows it is the Mossad, he might not agree to work with you but he won't turn you in. You have at your disposal a nonrisk recruitment system that actually gives you a pool of millions of Jewish people to tap from outside your own borders. It's much easier to operate with what is available on the spot, and sayanim offer incredible practical support everywhere. But they are never put at risk nor are they privy to classified information. Suppose during an operation a katsa suddenly had to come up with an electronics store as a cover. A call to a sayan in that business could bring 50 television sets, 200 VCRs -whatever was needed - from his warehouse to your building, and in next to no time, you'd have a store with $3 or $4 million worth of stock in it. Since most Mossad activity is in Europe, it may be preferable to have a business address in North America. So, there are address sayanim and telephone sayanim. If a katsa has to give out an address or a phone number, he can use the sayan's. And if the sayan gets a letter or a phone call, he will know immediately how to proceed. Some business sayanim have a bank of 20 operators answering phones, typing letters, faxing messages, all a front for the Mossad. The joke is that 60 percent of the business of those telephone answering companies in Europe comes from the Mossad. They'd fold otherwise. The one problem with the system is that the Mossad does seem to care how devastating it could be to the status of the Jewish people in the diaspora if it was known. The answer you get if you ask is: "So what's the worst that could happen to those Jews?' They'd all come to Israel - Great." ... People make the mistake of thinking the Mossad is at a disadvantage by not having stations in obvious target countries. The United States, for example, has a station in Moscow and the Russians have stations in Washington and New York. But Israel doesn't have a station in Damascus. They don't understand that the Mossad regards the whole world outside Israel as a target, including Europe and the United States."

"American Jewish Congress President Paul Miller today called for an end to efforts by certain church groups to divest in whole or in part from companies that do business in Israel, and announced a counter-campaign to blunt its impact: "There is an ill-advised and troublesome effort calling for total or selective divestment from corporations that do business with Israel, and to pressure others, such as Caterpillar Inc., to stop selling products to Israel. Preying on the emotions of well-meaning individuals who think that they are contributing to peace, these divestment campaigns coincides with other efforts which seek to undermine Israel's self-defense, its economy and its legitimacy, and to pressure Israel to make concessions during peace negotiations with the Palestinians. It is time to make it clear that these tactics will not work," Miller said ... Miller announced that the American Jewish Congress is launching a coordinated effort in opposition to the divestment campaign and to support Israel's economy overall. These include the following steps: * AJCongress has bought shares of Caterpillar stock and will urge Caterpillar directors and officers to refuse to buckle under pressure; it will use its shares to oppose a shareholder resolution opposing equipment sales to Israel or any entity of the Israeli government. * AJCongress will seek to forge a coalition with Christian leaders as well as other Jewish organizations opposed to this divesture program, to urge an end to such misguided efforts which harm Israel's economy. * AJCongress will initiate a letter writing campaign to church leaders. * AJCongress will seek pledges of investment in all companies targeted for divestment, and launch a series of advertisements in financial publications urging investment. * AJCongress will host a website and a blog to promote its program and communicate with campaign supporters. * In cooperation with International Academic Friends of Israel (IAFI), AJCongress will conduct a series of conferences in Israel in support of Israel's technologically based economy and in support of business opportunities within Israel. The program will bring together biomedical and other high-tech experts from the U.S., Israel, Europe and Asia. With the assistance of Tel Aviv University and American experts, the conferences will also address ways to protect Israel's intellectual capital, and to foster incentives for the expansion of high-tech companies in Israel; * And, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, AJCongress has begun an effort to help promote an alternative energy industry in Israel. AJCongress is supporting legislation for energy cooperation between the U.S. and Israel. The American Jewish Congress is a membership association of Jewish Americans, organized to defend Jewish interests at home and abroad, through public policy advocacy, in the courts, Congress, the executive branch and state and local governments. It also works overseas with others who are similarly engaged."
SEC probes Bank Leumi USA.. The investigation was opened after irregularities were discovered at Leumi Investment Services Inc. during 2004,
by Dafna Zucker, Globes (Israel), March 30, 2005
"The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently launched an investigation into Bank Leumi USA, Bank Leumi's financial report reveals. The SEC opened the investigation after irregularities were discovered at Leumi Investment Services Inc. (LISI) during 2004. One of LISI's employees allegedly carried out improper securities trades. The matter was reported to the authorities, and the employee was fired. Bank Leumi declined to provide additional details about the investigation. It said that there were suspicions of irregular activities at Bank Leumi USA's dealing room, and that the scale of the suspected trades was not large. LISI has a brokerage license to trade in securities for Bank Leumi USA's private banking customers. LISI was founded in 2001, and received permits in 2003 to expand its activities to the sale of insurance and the marketing of mutual funds managed by large investment houses."

American Jews may put Garabagh conflict on Congress agenda,
Azer News, March 31, 2005
"The Jewish Diaspora in America may put the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper Garabagh on discussion at the US Congress, says President of the Weinberg Foundation of Jews in America Shale Stiller. Stiller, who has arrived in Baku to study the Garabagh conflict, said he will appeal to the US Congress over the issue. "Detailed information on the conflict should be collected in order to put it on discussion at the US Congress and international organizations."
[Hail Jewish Lobby! Long may it rule! Perhaps the once "politically correct" London mayor has learned an important lesson. Los Angeles, Miami mayors snub London colleague over Nazi remarks,
Yahoo! News, March 31, 2005
"The mayors of Los Angeles and Miami have demanded that their London counterpart Ken Livingstone apologise for comparing a Jewish reporter to a Nazi guard. Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn warned that Livingston would not be welcome in the second-largest US city until he made amends for comparing the journalist to a concentration camp guard last month. "Unless and until Mayor Ken Livingstone of London apologises for his comments ... he will not be accorded or offered any official welcome to the City of Los Angeles," Hahn said in a letter to the US Conference of Mayors. In the letter, made public Thursday by the Los Angeles-based Jewish lobby group, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, he also urged his fellow US mayors to follow suit and bar Livingstone from official visits their cities. Miami Mayor Carlos Alvarez also slammed Livingstone for making the remarks, for which he has so far refused to apologise, although he has said he had not meant to offend the Jewish community. It is the responsibility of elected officials to set the example and treat others, no matter what their background, with respect," Alvarez said on a letter released by the Wiesenthal Center. The left-wing London mayor drew fury with comments he made on February 8 London Evening Standard reporter Oliver Finegold. Livingstone said Finegold was "just like a concentration camp guard" by "just doing it because you are paid to" -- a reference to working for the paper, which the mayor considers hostile to him. Livingstone's comments "demeaned the memory of the Nazi Holocaust," the Wiesenthal Center said."

Campus Turmoil. Jewish students and activists call UC Irvine a hotbed of anti-Semitic harassment,
by Marc Ballon, Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, March 11, 2005
"In the center quad at UC Irvine, Amir Abdel Malik Ali stands before a crowd of 150, his hands clutching a podium bearing the message, “Desperation of the Zionist Lobby.” “Zionism is a mixture, a fusion of the concept of white supremacy and the chosen people,” the Oakland-based Muslim religious leader and teacher told the audience at the Feb. 2 Muslim Student Union (MSU)-organized event. Malik Ali unleashed an attack about the Zionist control of the American media, Zionist complicity in the war in Iraq and Zionists’ ability to deflect justified criticism. “You will have to hear more about the Holocaust when you accuse them of their Nazi behavior,” he told the group of mostly Muslim students. At a time when Israeli and Palestinian leaders are taking baby steps toward a peaceful two-state solution, Malik Ali made it clear that he had a different vision. “One state. Majority rule,” he said to rousing applause. “Check that out. Us. The Muslims.” Not So Quiet On Campus Once a sleepy suburban university, UCI has joined the ranks of Columbia University and UC Berkeley as a hotbed of anti-Zionism. The situation has become so tense that the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights — in reaction to a complaint filed by the conservative Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) — is investigating allegations of anti-Jewish harassment at UCI and administration indifference. In recent years, UCI Muslim student groups have invited speakers like Malik Ali to attack Israel and its supporters in language that has the unmistakable ring of anti-Semitism. Pro-Israel students say they have been sworn at and intimidated by Muslim students. They say that a few pro-Palestinian activists have followed Jewish students around campus, pushed placards in their faces equating Zionism with Nazism and, in one instance, threatened violence. Muslim students and some UCI faculty members say that Jewish groups have exaggerated the problems and, at times, contributed to campus tensions by taking their slanted case to the media at every opportunity. Others argue that UCI is a hospitable place for the vast majority of the university’s 750 to 1,000 Jewish students, and that the loudest complaints come from a core of pro-Israel advocates who confuse anti-Zionism, or criticism of Israel and its supporters, with anti-Semitism. To be sure, pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel sentiment have become ever more common at American universities. In recent years, campus support for divesting university funds from Israel has grown, reflecting the decline of the Jewish state’s standing since the beginning of the second intifada. Still, UCI students and their activist supporters say the frequency and intensity of anti-Zionism and sometimes anti-Semitism at UCI has earned the school a particularly tarnished reputation ... “The school has turned a blind eye long enough for it to appear OK for these extremists to escalate their hate speech,” said Roz Rothstein, executive director of StandWithUs, an advocacy group that has worked extensively with the Anteaters for Israel student group at UCI ... In a 2004 video titled “Incitement at UC Irvine” a young student said, “Jewish students are afraid to speak out; Jewish students are afraid to be themselves.” The video never aired, because some students worried that their complaints about UCI would alienate the administration and faculty to their detriment, said Rothstein of StandWithUs, which produced the tape ... Simon Wiesenthal Center Associate Dean Abraham Cooper said California public universities have largely failed to combat anti-Semitism. To prevent the further demonization of Jewish students, he said education leaders should consider revisiting the issue of hate speech. The University of California once banned so-called fighting words, but the courts struck down those provisions as violating free speech, said Ravi Poorsina, spokesperson for UC President Robert Dynes ... UC Irvine is not the only school with a declining reputation in the Jewish community. In recent years, American, Canadian and European universities have seen an explosion of anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic activities on campus, partly fueled by the second intifada. An informal alliance among Palestinians, the far left and Islamists who share an antipathy toward Israel as well as U.S. policies in Iraq and the Patriot Act have also contributed, said Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum. University faculties have grown increasingly anti-Israel as Arab and other money has flowed in to fund professorships and Middle East institutes, said Gary Tobin, president of the Institute for Jewish and Community Research."

U.S. rabbi rescues sacred scrolls lost in Holocaust,
Haaretz (Israel), March 30, 2005
"From a crowded bookstore in an bland strip mall in suburban Washington D.C., Rabbi Menachem Youlus runs a worldwide effort to rescue sacred Torah scrolls from oblivion. Over the past 13 years, Youlus has found and rescued 435 of the holy Jewish scrolls, which contain the Hebrew text of the first five books of the Bible. Youlus has found Torahs hidden in old churches and basements in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. He has found them in antique stores and hoarded in peoples' homes for the past 60 years -- the last remains of Jewish communities wiped out by the Holocaust ... The group says a Torah costs an average $10,000 and it spends about another $10,000 repairing and shipping the scrolls. Every day, digital photographs of newly located Torahs arrive by e-mail. Youlus is often able to tell by the font, the parchment or the state of the ink where the Torah came from and how old it is. Over the years, he has had many narrow escapes. Once in Germany, he bought a Torah from an elderly man who was threatening to burn it live on the Internet. "When I gave him the money, he literally threw the Torah at me. I was driving to the airport when two men forced me off the road and beat me up, trying to steal it back. Fortunately, I had already passed it off to an associate who was in a different car. I lost two teeth and got concussion," Youlus said. Since then, he usually travels with a bodyguard, a former Soviet commando. Later, Youlus discovered the man who sold the Torah served at the Auschwitz extermination camp and had confiscated it from a Jew on his way to the gas chambers. "I estimate there are maybe 2,400 or 2,500 more Torahs out there that I know of that can be fixed if we can only raise the funds to buy them," he said. He knows of 70 being stored in a single antiques shop in the Ukrainian city of Lviv... When he rescues a Torah, Youlus tries to determine if it can be repaired to be used again by a synagogue. Torahs he has rescued now reside in Jewish communities all over the world. If the Torah is too badly damaged, it can still be put on display as a kind of Holocaust memorial."

TV Notes: Big names get behind NBC's 9/11 miniseries,
Post-Gazette, March 22, 2005
"NBC hasn't announced any of the in-front-of-camera talent for its upcoming miniseries focusing on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, but the behind-the-scenes profile continues to rise. Former ABC News correspondent Peter Lance ("1,000 Years for Revenge: International Terrorism and the FBI -- the Untold Story") and former Washington Post managing editor Steve Coll ("Ghost Wars: the Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001") are on board as consultants. Fred Golan ("Boomtown," "Law & Order: Trial by Jury") has been added to the film's writing staff. Lance, Coll and Golan join a team that already includes executive producers Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and David Nevins of Imagine Television and writer and executive producer Graham Yost ("Boomtown")."

Should every movie that sports Nazi regalia likewise be banned? 2) The real issue at stake here by these Jewish censors is their usual effort to ban free speech, wherein the world Jewish Lobby seeks to circuitously strangle any criticism of itself and Israel.]
Court to hear web speech censorship case,
by David Kravets, ABC News, March 24, 2005
"A federal appeals court was to hear arguments on whether U.S.-based Internet service providers are liable for damages in foreign courts for speech originating from the United States. That First Amendment question was before the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday. The case was brought by Internet portal Yahoo Inc., which is challenging a growing multi-million-dollar fine a Paris court levied four years ago for continuing to allow the site's French users to buy and sell Nazi memorabilia. Yahoo wants the appeals court to declare that the judgment, now at about $15 million and growing by as much as $15,000 per day, cannot be collected in the United States the only venue where the two French human rights groups who sued Yahoo can claim the judgment. Yahoo's French subsidiary, yahoo.fr, complies with France's law, but a French judge ordered Yahoo.com of Sunnyvale, Calif., to strip Nazi paraphernalia from the portal's most popular site. Yahoo did not appeal the French order, and instead went to a U.S. District Court in San Jose where the First Amendment battle began. A San Jose federal judge in 2002 ruled Yahoo, as an American company, was not liable for the judgment. The human rights groups appealed to the 9th Circuit, where a three-judge panel of the San Francisco court overturned the San Jose judge's decision. The appeals court said the San Jose judge ruled prematurely because the human rights groups had not sought to collect the judgment. France's Union of Jewish Students and the International Anti-Racism and Anti-Semitism League haven't acted on the French judgment, so the appeals court said the San Jose judge unlawfully intervened and decided the case. Yahoo appealed to the 9th Circuit again, asking it to rehear the case with 11 judges. Without comment, the court agreed last month. "We need to be able to determine whether or not we have an obligation to comply," Yahoo attorney Mary Wirth said. "Because if we can't get early word from the court about our compliance obligation, we're in a Catch 22 between choosing censorship or letting fines accrue."

Jewish Author Examines Jews' Role in Jesus' Death. "Jews have long acknowledged the role played by a few prominent ancestors in the events leading to the Crucifixion'',
by Marion Kim, Christian News, March 25, 2005
"Jewish writer David Klinghoffer examines the role Jews played in Jesus'death in his new book, "Why the Jews Rejected Jesus: The Turning Point in Western History." Jews have long acknowledged the role played by a few prominent ancestors in the events leading to the Crucifixion," he writes early in the book. Quoting from the Talmud and writings by 12th-century philosopher Maimonides, he says the references of such Jewish sages who opposed Jesus were later censored by Jews in fear of Christian persecution, but the history on this is clear and should be discussed honestly, according to the Seattle Times. Klinghoffer quotes the Talmud, which says that "on the eve of Passover they hung Yeshu (Jesus)" on charges that he "performed magic, enticed and led astray Israel." Since that is the Jewish tradition, "to say that Jewish leaders were instrumental in getting Jesus killed is not anti-Semitic," he says. Klinghoffer claims it wrong, even hypocritical, for Jewish groups and others to call Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of the Christ" anti-Semitic because it shows Jews participation in events that led to the execution of Jesus."
[Is government your God? Are the dicates of any man-made court system sacred to you? This article needs to be widely passed around in the Christian and human decency communities. Who are today's immoral Nazis? Jews run the U.S. government, everyone is afraid to challenge them, and it will take a long-term grassroots Internet movement to overthrow their stranglehold on America. See what America has become. Barney Frank, the Jewish homosexual who was waist-deep (so to speak) in a scandal a few years ago over a male prostitute, demands that government legaleze be free to murder Terri Schiavo. The central issue: what does the Judeocentric government have to do with morality? Nothing. How is the life-and-death word of God from American courts not an expression of "government?" Self-serving man-made laws are the gods of nihilists, hedonists, and cowards who defer moral stances to the faceless "state." If Schiavo's parents have hope for their daughter, their love and transcendent belief system are worth a million robed judges with a convertible Mercedes and that's ALL that matters. Human hope should lead the disgusting pack, and the Jewish celebration of Death and Darth Vader lawyers should sink back into Hell.]
Jewish Lawmakers Dominate Debate Over Terri Schiavo,
By E.J. KESSLER, [Jewish] Forward, March 25, 2005
"Jewish Democratic lawmakers took the lead this week in demanding that Congress stay out of the case of Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged Florida woman who has been kept alive for 15 years by a feeding tube. In particular, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida took aim at President Bush. She criticized him for signing the law authorizing a federal review of the state court order that would allow the woman's husband to disconnect her feeding tube. The husband, who claims he is following Schiavo's wishes by allowing her to die, is being opposed by the woman's parents, who sought help from House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and other conservative Republicans. On Sunday, during a press conference before the congressional vote on the Schiavo law, Wasserman Schultz and two other Jewish Democrats, Rep. Robert Wexler of Florida and Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, were among the most outspoken lawmakers in condemning what they termed an abuse of power by GOP congressional leaders and an unwarranted federal intrusion into a family matter. Representatives of various synagogue movements were divided in their treatment of the Schiavo case, but political observers said that the lawmakers undoubtedly reflected the majority of Jews around the country. Polls consistently have shown that as a group, Jews fall significantly to the libertarian left of the rest of the country on issues involving medical ethics, including abortion, stem-cell research and assisted suicide. "Democrats in general and more secular Jewish Democrats in particular place an extraordinary value on individual autonomy and personal decision-making," Democratic pollster Mark Mellman said. "That is clearly evident in this debate." ... In their plea this week to a federal judge, Schiavo's parents drew attention to the religious dimension of the controversy. Their lawyer told a federal court Tuesday that Schiavo's religious beliefs as a Roman Catholic were being infringed. The attorney noted that Pope John Paul II has decreed Catholics may not refuse food and water. "We are now in a position where a court has ordered her to disobey her church and even jeopardize her eternal soul," the lawyer said."]
ADL blasts Scott,
by Bronson Hilliard, Colorado Daily, March 30, 2005
"The Mountain States Regional Office of the Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday condemned remarks by Boulder talk-show host Jann Scott and an allegedly homophobic e-mail by him. Scott, upset over a Boulder City Council decision to stop funding community access television, fired off an e-mail to Boulder's mayor, Mark Ruzzin, calling him "Big Jew Mayor Ruzzin." The subject line on Scott's e-mail was "City Jews persecute Christ." He also attacked Boulder City Council member Robin Bohannon for her work with AIDS patients through the Boulder County AIDS Project. ADL's Regional Director Bruce H. DeBoskey condemned the language in strong terms Tuesday and called for action from the Boulder community in a press release sent to the local media. "It is the community's responsibility to stand up and tell Scott, 'Your hateful speech is not welcome here and we stand together to reject your ideas that perpetuate destructive, hurtful stereotypes about Jews and homosexuals,'" DeBoskey said in the release. Scott sometimes refers to himself as "Jesus" on his shows. Ruzzin, who is not Jewish, said he has thus far ignored Scott so as not to lend credibility to his remarks. "My kind of approach to these sorts of things is that by ignoring them I do not provide an opportunity to bring more attention to something that isn't worthy of attention," said Ruzzin in a Tuesday Associated Press story. The e-mail greatly angered Council member Andy Schultheiss, who is Jewish. "I know you're trying to shock people, the right to which I will defend even though you are offending me, my colleagues, anyone else who might stumble into this cesspool, and my relatives who were killed in the Holocaust (and especially those who survived it)," Schultheiss wrote in an e-mail to Scott. Both of Schultheiss' parents escaped from Nazi Germany. Boulder's CATV-Channel 54 airs 18 hours a week of Scott's shows, many of which focus on local politics and the issues of drug and alcohol use. Scott, considered by many as a provocateur, has sent obscenity-laced e-mails to council members and others for years over budget cuts for the station ... Scott on Monday described the e-mail as a parody and likened it to how comedians such as Mel Brooks deal in racial humor. "It was really making fun of them. I'm not anti-Semitic. I have relatives who are Jews," Scott told the Rocky Mountain News. DeBoskey wasn't buying that explanation on Tuesday."

House Sets Limits on Palestinian Aid As DeLay Defies Calls of Bush, Rice. Groups Faulted For Passivity,
By Ori Nir, [Jewish] Forward, March 30, 2005
"Defying the wishes of the Bush administration, Congress
approved a foreign-aid package this week forbidding any direct assistance to the Palestinian Authority and, in a rare snub, denying the president the authority to waive restrictions in the interest of national security. The legislation was approved 388-to-44 in the House of Representatives and is expected to sail through the Senate. The House approved $200 million in aid, to be channeled to nongovernmental projects outside the control of the P.A., as part of an $81 billion in emergency spending bill to help pay the costs of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The limits on Palestinian aid were the product of a deal brokered by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The pro-Israel lobbying powerhouse, known as Aipac, was called to mediate talks involving administration officials and lawmakers from both parties, including New York Rep. Nita Lowey, an influential Jewish Democrat, congressional sources said. Sources also said that the driving force behind the rejection of direct aid was House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican, who at one point threatened to cut all aid to the Palestinian territories out of the bill. "DeLay became more Jewish than the chief rabbi — if you can twist the phrase that way — and he was not going to let it through," said Rep. Gary Ackerman, a Democrat from New York who supported direct aid ... According to well-positioned sources, members of the appropriations subcommittee tapped Esther Kurz, who directs Aipac's legislative department, to broker compromise language that would satisfy DeLay's demands while allowing the administration to have the money. Aipac, up to that point, had only been marginally involved in the Palestinian aid package. Now it was requested to exert its authority on Israel-related issues and to broker compromise language. The assumption, one source said, was that DeLay would be hard pressed to oppose language that the chief pro-Israel lobby has endorsed. In addition to his close ties to Christian conservatives, DeLay hasworked with the Zionist Organization of America, which vehemently opposes Israel's Gaza disengagement plan and regularly criticizes Israeli and American efforts to support Abbas. DeLay was also close to Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff, an Orthodox Jew with hawkish views on Israel, until Abramoff's recent legal troubles involving claims that he overcharged Native American tribes involved in casino gambling. DeLay is also facing potential legal problems, after several of his associates were indicted in Texas on alleged campaign fund-raising violations. Despite his mounting troubles, DeLay continues to be viewed in many circles as the most powerful member of Congress ... The Christian Israel Public Affairs Committee has been asking members of Congress to oppose any P.A. aid, said Richard Hellman, president of the Christian organization."

Medical Adviser for Baseball Lists Exaggerated Credentials,
by Duff Wilson, New York Times, March 30, 2005
"Dr. Elliot J. Pellman, the medical adviser for Major League Baseball whose recent testimony to Congress praised baseball's steroids policy and challenged its critics, has exaggerated his educational and professional credentials. Dr. Pellman, who is also team doctor for the Jets and the Islanders and a former president of the National Football League Physicians Society, has said repeatedly in biographical statements that he has a medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. But Dr. Pellman attended medical school in Guadalajara, Mexico, and he received a medical degree from the New York State Education Department after a one-year residency at SUNY Stony Brook, state records show. He does not hold an M.D. from Stony Brook, according to Dan Rosett, a university hospital spokesman. In papers sent to Harvard University for a seminar and to the House Committee on Government Reform, which held the hearings on steroids in baseball two weeks ago, Dr. Pellman identified himself as an associate clinical professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. But he is an assistant clinical professor, a lower-ranking and honorary position that is held by thousands of doctors, a medical college official said. Dr. Pellman does not teach at Albert Einstein. The New York Times reviewed Dr. Pellman's credentials after his nationally televised appearance before the House committee on March 17. He was added to the hearing at the request of Major League Baseball and staunchly defended baseball's steroids policies. In interviews this week, Dr. Pellman, 51, said he had not tried to mislead anybody about his credentials. He characterized the errors as minor and said he would correct them. And he primarily blamed other people, including his secretary and the Jets, for the discrepancies. "In a way, I thank you, because those discrepancies are not important enough to be there, and they have all been fixed," he said in a telephone interview yesterday. But Dr. Dan Brock, director of Harvard Medical School's Division of Medical Ethics, said, "If I told you I graduated from medical school in the United States, and I went to Guadalajara, then I think I would have deliberately misled you, so I would say that was unethical." In his testimony to the House committee, Dr. Pellman contended that baseball's efforts to curb steroid use compared favorably with those of any other sport. "Unlike some other medical professionals you will hear from today, I have had extensive experience in the area of professional sports," he told the committee. Dr. Pellman, who is an internist, said he had advised baseball executives who negotiated the steroids policy with union leaders. But under questioning, Dr. Pellman admitted he was not aware of a loophole that would allow a player to leave the room for an hour in the middle of a drug test, nor of a loophole that would allow a $10,000 fine instead of a 10-day suspension for a first offense ... When informed of the errors in Dr. Pellman's biography, Representative Henry A. Waxman, Democrat of California, who is the ranking minority member on the House committee, said in a statement yesterday: "Major League Baseball told us Dr. Pellman was their foremost expert, but he was unable to answer even basic questions about the league's steroid policy at the hearing. This new information raises further questions about his credibility and the credibility of baseball's steroid policy." Robert White, a spokesman for Representative Tom Davis, Republican of Virginia, who is the chairman of the House committee, said he was "stunned" that baseball would send "a doctor with a questionable résumé."

Rabbi who cursed Rabin targets Sharon,
By Yaakov Katz, Jerusalem Post, March 30, 2005
"Yosef Dayan, who enacted a pulsa denura – Aramaic for "lashes of fire" – death curse against Yitzhak Rabin shortly before his assassination, has received a green light from kabbalistic rabbis to place the same curse on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in the next few days. "This is the next step and it needs to be prepared," Dayan told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday. "We need to do this since [Sharon] and the system he runs are not stopping." Dayan, who said he had met with several senior rabbis recently seeking permission to place the curse, met Tuesday with Yehoshua Ben-Shushan – a Jerusalem kabbalist and a leader of an early-'80s plot to blow up the Dome of the Rock. Other far-right activists associated with Dayan said they had heard he had gotten a go-ahead to proceed with the curse, which is based on passages from the Zohar, kabbala's major work. Dayan said in September that he would be willing to cast the curse, but only after receiving authorization from senior kabbalistic rabbis. While Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz decided at the time not to investigate Dayan for criminal offenses, Justice Ministry officials told the Post on Tuesday that they might need to revisit the issue. "If he [simply] wishes something inside his soul, we cannot necessarily do anything [to stop him]," a Justice Ministry official said. "If the curse is instigated, however, we will need to check the circumstances to see if it was done in public and if people are willing to act upon the curse." In October, Dayan led a group of activists who reenacted a First Temple-era water libation ritual at the Shiloah Spring in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, with the goal of removing Sharon from power and instituting a Jewish monarchy. Right-wing activists said Tuesday the curse would not give them the right to assassinate Sharon but was rather a 'prayer for divine intervention'. "How it happens isn't of interest," one said. "For all we care, he can die of a heart attack."
Serbia-Montenegro proposes new laws against anti-Semitism,
Haaretz (Israel), March 30, 2005
"Serbia-Montenegro's president has called for new legal measures against anti-Semitism in the Balkan country. Svetozar Marovic met with the Israeli ambassador to Belgrade, Yafa Ben Ari, and issued the statement yesterday proposing "new legislative initiatives to prevent anti-Semitic incidents." Earlier this month, hate messages appeared in the capital against Serbia's dwindling Jewish community, two pro-Western human rights groups and a liberal broadcaster. The posters and graffiti were signed by a previously unknown group calling itself National Order. Serbian police have arrested three suspects in connection with the recent anti-Semitic incidents, which also were strongly condemned by government officials, leaders of the dominant Serbian Orthodox Church and other key institutions. Marovic's statement did not elaborate on the legislation that might be added to existing provisions against ethnic, racial and religious intolerance, but said the Israeli ambassador "expressed her gratitude for the president's efforts" to stem anti-Semitism. Marovic was among dignitaries from 40 countries who attended the March 15 opening of a new Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, where he delivered "an important and inspiring speech" on the tragedy of the six million Jews who were murdered, Ben Ari said. Of the once-affluent, 30,000-strong Jewish community in Serbia before World War II, less than half survived the Nazi occupation. Many later moved to Israel or to the West. The statement from Marovic's office also said that he and the Israeli ambassador discussed "economic cooperation in agriculture, tourism and investments between Israel and Serbia-Montenegro," the Balkan country formerly known as Yugoslavia."
Dr. Kuropas victimized by hatchet job, [Editorial]
Ukrainian News, February 16 - March 1, 2005
"Over the past few weeks a controversy has arisen in the United States over a January 26, 2005 article by Warren P. Strobel and Jonathan S. Landay of the Washington Bureau of the Knight Ridder newspaper headlined "Activist critical of Jews was part of U.S. delegation to Ukraine." In it, quotations taken out of context from two commentaries by The Ukrainian Weekly's columnist Dr. Myron Kuropas, which appeared in that newspaper in 1996 and 2000 respectively, and a 1998 news story regarding a speech he gave in Toronto, which appeared in this newspaper, were dredged up. In the original story, Dr. Kuropas was identified as "a Ukrainian American activist who has accused Jews of manipulating the Holocaust for their gain and blamed them for Soviet-era atrocities in Ukraine." The story went on to say that the White House appeared to be embarrassed by inviting Dr. Kuropas to become a member of the official delegation to President Viktor Yushchenko's inauguration and quoted an unnamed official as saying that had they been aware of what Dr. Kuropas had written earlier, they never would have invited him. Almost immediately, several U.S. politicians, major newspapers and other U.S. media outlets and interest groups pounced on the Kuropas issue, labeling him an "anti-Semite", castigating the Bush Administration for having appointed him to the delegation in the first place, calling upon the Northern Illinois University, where he serves as a part-time lecturer to fire him, and so on. Sad to say, there were a number of Ukrainian media outlets that jumped on the "Get Kuropas" bandwagon - both in Ukraine and in North America. Of these, the most disgraceful was the Op-Ed piece "Lessons from the recent controversy surrounding Myron Kuropas," by Max Pyziur, posted on the Brama website on Feb. 10, 2005. In it, Pyziur calls Dr. Kuropas an "anti-Semite", and charges him with "gross inaccuracies and bigotry." We'll get to that later, but first, since this newspaper figured in the original Knight Ridder report and this newspaper's editor was "quoted" in it, we would like to place both the original story and the "quote" in their proper context. This is how the paragraphs relating to Ukrainian News were reported by Knight Ridder:
"The Ukrainian News, based in Edmonton, Canada, quoted Kuropas as saying in a March 1998 speech that Ukrainian 'good cops' should engage Jews in a dialogue on their common history, while Ukrainian 'bad cops' should 'go on the offensive reminding Jews of ... Jewish Bolsheviks without whom the murderous Soviet regime would have collapsed in its infancy.'
"'Let the Jews go on the defensive for a change. The crimes of their people cannot be explained away easily,' he was quoted as saying."
"Marco Levytsky, the author of the report and the editor of the Ukrainian News, said Kuropas never objected to the accuracy of the report."
The sections cited were contained in paragraphs 14 and 15 of the report and were lifted out of the original longer quotes. The paragraphs that immediately preceded these sections, noted that Kuropas said there are writers in the Jewish community who have taken an objective stand on Ukrainian issues, listing specific examples, then went on to name others who have tried to present crimes committed by individual Ukrainians as representative of the whole community. The focus of his speech was that while there are certain Ukrainophobic groups within the Jewish community, this is not representative of the Jewish community as a whole. These sections were totally ignored by Knight Ridder. Now, how did Knight Ridder get to quote the editor? Jonathan S. Landay called the paper to ask whether a story published in Ukrainian News back in 1998 that his colleague, Warren P. Strobel, found somewhere on the Internet was actually published. When asked where on the Internet he found it since Ukrainian News does not have a website, he was unable to identify it. After the editor of Ukrainian News checked his bound yearbooks he was able to confirm that yes, this story did appear and yes, it did state that Kuropas identified three specific Jewish groups as targeting Ukrainians. The editor of Ukrainian News then told Landay to note that right in the second paragraph Dr. Kuropas is quoted as saying: "When I speak of 'the Jews', I don't mean all Jews, maybe not even most Jews." Landay replied: "Oh yes, of course." Landay then asked Levytsky whether Kuropas at any time called the newspaper to ask for a retraction. The answer was no, why should he? That's where the conversation ended. At no point where the specific quotes referred to ever mentioned. Now, technically, one can state that: "Marco Levytsky, the author of the report and the editor of the Ukrainian News, said Kuropas never objected to the accuracy of the report." But that is a technicality. Anybody who knows anything about journalistic practice - both ethical and unethical - knows that the question was merely a ploy to allow the "reporter" to stick in a contrived piece of "news" in order to make the subject of his hatchet job look even worse. Neither does it state that the quote was made in response to a leading question. Instead the way the story was written gives the impression that Levytsky volunteered the comment. This is a manufactured piece of reporting and clearly shows that the intention of the writers was simply to do a hatchet job. Another interesting question is how Knight Ridder came up with this 1998 story in the first place. It is on the web site of the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association, but the link had been removed. (It is back on and if anyone wants to view that story in its entirety, you can go to www.uccla.ca.) We found it by using a Google search with the words "Kuropas" and "Toronto". A Google search with the words "Kuropas" and "Jews" produces 540 results. Did the Knight Ridder reporters look through all 540 to pick these three? More likely they already knew which specific stories they were looking for. This gives credence to the assertion made by Dr. Bohdan Vitvitsky in The Ukrainian Weekly of Feb. 06, 2005, when he stated:
"Given that Dr. Kuropas neither did nor said anything prior, during or after his participation in the delegation to the Yushchenko inauguration, how is it that he suddenly found himself in the glaring spotlight? The only possible answer is that some organization or person has a dossier on Dr. Kuropas and then some people decided that his participation in the delegation was an opportune time to teach Dr. Kuropas a lesson."
Now, one can raise the question of whether Dr. Kuropas' decision to focus this speech before the Ukrainian community in Toronto on the role certain Jewish organizations have played in promoting Ukrainophobia was wise. The event that led to Dr. Kuropas' invitation to speak was the Canadian government's decision to begin proceedings to deport Wasyl Odynsky as a supposed war criminal under its denaturalization and deportation policy. The critical thing here is that under this policy a person does not have to be charged with any specific war crime and that is just one of the many very glaring abuses of basic civil liberties that are inherent in this policy. We believe that it is best for our community to focus directly on the civil liberties implications of this issue and not get sidetracked by who is behind it. It doesn't matter whether it is the Jewish or the Arab lobby that is responsible for this assault on civil liberties. The policy remains an assault on civil liberties, regardless. Nevertheless, it is a fact that this policy has been pushed upon the Canadian government by certain Jewish interest groups - namely the Canadian Jewish Congress and B'nai Brith. It is also a fact that there are a number of people within the federal Justice Department who are repeatedly launching new legal measures against Odynsky, Katriuk and others in order to justify their existence and position at the public trough. Like the individuals in Canada's Justice Department, there are many similar groups and individuals within the United States that have profited in a similar way. The Office of Special Investigations, which has been found guilty of committing "fraud upon the court" in the John Demjanjuk case, is one such example. The issue of the "Holocaust Industry" was initially raised by Prof. Norman G. Finkelstein of the City University of New York and author of the book "The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering". We would like to note that not only is Dr. Finkelstein Jewish, he is the son of a Holocaust victim. One can disagree with Dr. Kuropas on the matter of his focus, or tone. But one cannot doubt the factual truth of the statements he makes. Indeed, Dr. Kuropas is quite meticulous about getting his facts straight. And that is the principal issue here. Whether one agrees with him or not, nothing Dr. Kuropas has written has been factually incorrect. If people start labeling others as "anti-Semites", or "bigots" simply for stating the truth, then this is a serious threat to one of the most fundamental principles of democratic society - freedom of speech. But these are among the charges that Max Pyziur laid on Dr. Kuropas in urging The Weekly to remove its columnist. Had such comments come from the mainstream U.S. media we would not be surprised. But seeing them on a Ukrainian community media outlet, which should know a lot better, is quite disturbing. We have to question the motivation for Max Pyziur's attack."
