THIS WEEK'S JEWISH NEWS
Posted March 23:
[Isn't it time for the U.S. military to invade sicko Israel (and its Jewish citizens who don't know what morality is) to install a little "democracy" for a few thousand folks, above and beyond the millions of oppressed Palestinians? Information on Jewish and Israeli dominance of the world sex slave trade, pornography, etc., can be found here here. 300-400 brothels in tiny Israel? There are places where Israel is only 10 miles wide, and those stretches must be clogged with herds of fat pimps beating off each other's extended appendages to get at each other's stable of crucified non-Jewish women. Truly, Dante's Inferno.]
Israel's prostitution industry turnover NIS 5b a year. Knesset Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on the Trading in Women: 3,000-5,000 women have been smuggled into Israel and sold into prostitution at 300-400 brothels in recent years,
by Zvi Lavi, Globes (Israel), March 23, 2005
"Israel's prostitution and trading in women industry has a turnover of NIS 5 billion a year, states the concluding report by the Knesset Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on the Trading in Women chaired by MK Zahava Gal-On (Yahad). The report was published today. The report states that 3,000-5,000 women have been smuggled into Israel and sold into prostitution in recent years. The report's authors say that women are traded for $8,000-10,000 each. The women are reportedly held in 300-400 brothels across the country, and work 14-18 hours a day, seven days a week. The women serve scores of clients, but keep only NIS 20 from the NIS 120 each client pays. The rest is handed over to their pimps. A special survey commissioned by the committee found that the public does not consider trading in women to be a violation of human rights."
[Um, I guess it's, uh, good to know that at least Jewish women are treated decently in the Jewish state:]
Rabbi: Courts are provoking men to murder their wives,
By Amiram Barikat and David Ratner, Haaretz (Israel), March 21, 2005
"Chief Sephardic Rabbi Shlomo Amar said Monday that rushed court verdicts against husbands accused of abusing their wives are likely to provoke the men to commit murder. "Many times husbands are taken from their home on the basis of an uninvestigated complaint," said Amar, during a meeting with leaders from Na'amat, the largest women's rights organization in Israel. "Sometimes the deterioration can take place in the court, when a man feels he is not being heard." "Just as we are warned to denunciate all violence," said Amar, "we are warned against surpassing the appropriate level of caution, because then we are no longer being just." According to the rabbi, the courts are capricious and heavily influenced by events in the news."Each time the courts hear that someone murdered his wife, they become very tense," said Amar. "I don't envy the man that is brought before them [during those times], to be made hung as an example." "A few days pass, and everything returns to normal," said Amar. "This is very serious, in my opinion, that the courts are so capricious." In the meeting, which took place at the rabbi's office, the Na'amat representatives asked the rabbi to approve a fast-track divorce process for women whose husbands are abusive. The rabbi condemned marital violence, and promised to bring his recommendations to a discussion in the rabbinical courts. Earlier Monday, a 40-year-old woman was found stabbed to death in Haifa, apparently at the hands of her 53-year-old husband. Police found her body in their apartment, with her husband nearby. The couple has five children. The motive in the case is unclear. The Haifa murder is the sixth case since the beginning of the year in which women have allegedly been murdered by their husbands or boyfriends."
Lawyer pleads guilty to corruption charge,
BY ANTHONY M. DESTEFANO, New York Newsday, March 21, 2005
"A prominent Brooklyn lawyer who once headed the borough's bar association pleaded guilty Monday to a federal corruption charge. Edward Reich admitted that he agreed to accept cash bribes while he served as court-appointed referee for the sale of foreclosed real property. In a statement read to Judge John Gleeson, Reich said that while he handled the auction sale of property in state court cases, he accepted various payments ranging from $500 to $2,000. In return, Reich told Gleeson, he did favors for the bidders by sometimes lowering the purchase price or agreeing to accept less of a down payment than required. He stated that the payments were received from May 2002 to June 2003. Reich, 68, entered his plea to one count of conspiracy just as jury selection was to begin in his case. Afterward, he tried to evade reporters who were pursuing him by exiting the federal court house in Brooklyn through a little-used staircase. He was scheduled to go to trial yesterday on various bribery-related charges. He agreed to resign from the bar in about two months. Officials said Reich also faces a prison term of 33 to 41 months. Reich also admitted to Gleeson that he had submitted an affidavit to the court last December that he knew contained "materially false information." That false filing will be taken into consideration when Reich's sentence is computed, officials said. In addition to being a prominent lawyer in Brooklyn, Reich had also been a vice president of the New York State Bar Association from 1999 to 2003. He also was an official with the prestigious Torah Club, a social group of Jewish lawyers and judges who gather four times a year at a Brooklyn synagogue."
[Jewish domination of the computer world, here, spam, google, computer crime, you name it. Surprise! Here below we have the "Junk Mail King" and, gosh, he's a member of the tribe!]
Junk mail king Amir Gans: I'm fulfilling Bill Gates' ideas. He is seeking the dismissal of Microsoft's NIS 2.5 million lawsuit against him,
by Yitzhak Danan, Globes (Israel), March 22, 2005
"E-mail advertiser Amir Gans claims that Microsoft's (Nasdaq:MSFT) lawsuit against him is baseless and fantastic. He said he had not violated any legal obligation or current Israeli law regarding advertising by e-mail. In its lawsuit against Gans, Microsoft estimates it is entitled to $50 million in compensation for at least ten million pieces of junk mail sent by Gans to Hotmail subscribers. However, for the purpose of the court fee and chances of collection, Microsoft is suing Gans for NIS 2.5 million. In his statement of defense, Gans claims that Microsoft is a competitor in e-mail advertising. He says that Microsoft is cynically abusing an expensive and time-consuming legal procedure to drive him out of the e-mail advertising market. Gans says that Microsoft's lawsuit should be dismissed because there is no opponancy and because the evidence is inadmissible and not credible. He says he has not deviated from the activities and ideas of Bill Gates outlined in his book "Business @ the Speed of Thought" ... Gans regularly attends meetings of the Knesset Committee for Scientific and Technological Research and Development, which is preparing a bill to deal with junk mail. Gans emphasizes that Israel has not yet passed any law regarding e-mail advertising, which means that he has not broken any existing Israeli law. Gans says that e-mail advertising (junk mail) is not necessarily parasitic, nor does it necessarily harm its host."
French woman arrested for murder of banker Edouard Stern: judge,
Channel News, March 16, 2005
"Swiss police have arrested a French woman who allegedly confessed to the sex-related killing of banker Edouard Stern, one of France's richest men, the judge in charge of the case revealed. Swiss radio said a French woman involved in Geneva's sado-masochistic scene had been detained and that the shooting of Stern had been sex-related. The suspect had "admitted" the crime, Judge Michel Graber said in a statement released here on Wednesday. "It was a woman of French nationality with whom he (Stern) had intimate and regular relations for several years," he said. He did not identify the woman. "Mr. Stern was wearing a latex bodysuit and he was shot with four bullets from a firearm, two to the head, in the context of a sexual relation that was part of his private life," the judge said ... Stern, son-in-law of Michel David-Weill, chairman of French merchant bank Lazard, was separated from his wife, who lives in New York with their three children. He was buried last week at a Jewish cemetery in Veyrier near Geneva. Stern was David-Weill's heir apparent before he left Lazard in 1997. Since then he had run his own investment fund, valued at some 600 million euros (800 million dollars)."
Second Israeli suspect arrested in Sumitomo case. Meital Ravid is suspected of receiving envelopes containing money and addressed to her via UPS,
by Yitzhak Danon, Globes (Israel), March 23, 2005
"Ramat Gan resident Meital Ravid was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attempt to defraud the London branch of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation of £220 million. A police representative alleged in the Tel Aviv Magistrates Court that Ravid was suspected recently of money laundering, together with others. The police representative added that Ravid was suspected of receiving envelopes containing money and addressed to her, which were sent from overseas from UPS. A post office box key was found in Ravid’s possession."
[This is from a left-wing blog called "Lenin's Tomb." It's called that for a good reason. As you can see, it's a dead thing, strangling itself in censorial fascism. In its insistent totalitarianism, it exudes a deep, dank darkness against growth and Light. "Lenin's Tomb." I couldn't have imagined a better term for it. Decayed, buried, and obsolete. Completely out of touch with reality. Or does this represent that version of Lenin in a glass box, perpetually floating in formaldehyde? Free thinkers -- truly "progressive" people of any sort -- exchange ideas. Worried totalitarians -- Left or Right or in-between -- categorically block out information that doesn't fit their world view. The key to understanding the material below is that "Lenin's Tomb" hasn't a clue who or what the Jewish Tribal Review represents. Because it refuses to try to understand it. Or read the evidence. And the truth always threatens peoples' fragile illusions. It's an old standard for the Thought Police: if you can't reasonably argue your position, and you're worried that your nemesis can, screen him out by enforcing an absolute censorship. Refuse to engage in debate. And then smear him with vulgarity, epithets and insults -- as if that represents any substance about anything. Judeocentrism's lock on the Left, here.]
Oldest of Hatreds,
Lenin's Tomb, March 22, 2005
"Oh, joy of joys! I now have nutters visiting me from the Jewish Tribal Review, an anti-Semitic website created by fundamentalist Christians and 'revisionists'. I won't link to it, but the reason for the link is that the blogger Robert Lindsay has written a post complaining about anti-Semitic comments of his being deleted from the Tomb. The JTR, which Lindsay links to (see under The Jewish Question), has republished his post on their site, although they may well have done this without his permission. If any of their visitors take to depositing anti-Semitic filth in the comments boxes, they will be deleted and banned. Yeah, see, its because I'm part of the evil Zionist conspiracy that controls the world and... woo ha ha ha ha ha. Etc. The Tomb is commodious enough to handle most kind of kooks, but not these fucking fruitbats."
[Here's a deeper move in Israel towards fascism. One of the old Jewish Zionist Nazis has been awarded a day in his name. Behold Vladimir Jabotinsky, head of "Revisionist" Zionism, who once said: "Every race possessing a definite uniqueness seeks to become a nation, that is, to create for itself an economic, political, and intellectual environment in which every detail will derive from its specific thought and consequence that will also relate to its specific taste. A specific race can establish such an environment only in its own country, where it is master. For this reason every race seeks to become a state." [AVISHAI, B., p. 225] "Breaking away [from other Zionist groups] in the 1920s," says Peter Grose, "Jabotinsky's Revisionist Zionism organized its own fighting force in Palestine. The Irgun Zvai Leumi came to remind unsympathetic outsiders of Mussolini fascists; [Israel's first prime minister David] Ben-Gurion called the Revisionist leader 'Vladimir Hitler.'" [GROSE, p. 161] "Revisionists," notes Edwin Black, "... were heavily fascists and profoundly influenced by Mussolini ... True to fascist ideology, the fist and shout were the preferred methods of achieving Revisionist goals." [BLACK, E., p. 143] "Jabotinsky's most cherished creation was Betar," noted Livneh Eliezer, "[This] youth movement ... was ... a semi-militaristic entity that stressed hierarchy, discipline, obedience to superiors, rituals, and ceremonies. Military values [were] ... a virtue." [ELIEZER, p. 16] Some in the Revisionist camp in the 1930s, notes Jewish scholar Walter Laquer, "expressed the view that but for Hitler's anti-Semitism German National Socialism would have been acceptable [to Jews] and that, anyway, Hitler had saved Germany [LAQUER, W., p. 33] ... Within the [Revisionist] movement there were ... sections, some of them influential [where] fascist ideas had made considerable headway and, but for the rise of Hitler and Nazism, would no doubt have become even more prominent." [LAQUER, p. 382]
Law honoring Zionist forefather passed. Jabotinsky Day will be celebrated annually to commemorate one of Zionism's great forefathers; law created in bid to bring public closer to Zionist values,
by Ilan Marciano, Yedioth Ahronoth (Israel), March 23, 2005
"The Knesset approved the Zeev [i.e., Hebrewized from Vladimir] Jabotinsky Law Wednesday after it passed a second and third reading, following in the footsteps of the Binyamin Zeev Herzl [i.e, Hebrewized from Theodore Herzl] Law and Rehavam Zeevi law. The main objective of the law is "to endow future generations with Jabotinsky's vision and legacy, to commemorate his memory and to educate future generations with Zionist goals and visions." Knesset member and law initiator Ronnie Bar-On (Likud) said the law was created because Jabotinsky is considered one of the great forefathers of Zionism who dedicated his life to establishing a Jewish State in Israel. "He left an impression on Zionism and on the country's identity in the same spirit as the country's visionary Binyamin Zeev Herzl," he said. "Jabotinsky's vision laid down the foundations for a liberal and modern country based on democratic values and concern for fellow-man and minorities." Bringing Israel closer to Zionism Bar-On said the law had been created in a bid to draw Israel's youth and public closer to Zionist values and to instill within them the Zionist legacy and perpetual memory of the Zionist forefathers. To implement these values, "Zeev Jabotinsky Day" will be celebrated on an annual basis with educational activities in schools, the IDF and public institutions ... Jabotinsky (1880-1940) was a Zionist philosopher, author and journalist, who founded and lead the Revisionist movement. He was prompted into Zionist thought during Russian pogroms against the Jews and within a short while was one of the leading Zionist personalities in Russia. In 1925, he established the Union of Zionists-Revisionists (Hatzohar) which called for the immediate establishment of a Jewish State. He is the forefather of Zionist activism and greatly influenced the political vision of the right-wing political parties in Israel."

Ottawa announces $56M anti-racism plan,
by Ron Csillag, Canadian Jewish News, March 2005
"Just days after B’nai Brith Canada announced that anti-Semitic incidents hit a record high last year, the federal government marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by unveiling this country’s first cross-departmental action plan against racism. Dubbed “A Canada For All,” the plan, released Monday, calls for new initiatives across four federal ministries: heritage, labour, justice and immigration. Funding for the program – $56 million over five years – was earmarked in last month’s federal budget. Of special interest to the Jewish community will be the collection and standardization of data on hate-motivated crimes, identifying the needs of victims of hate crimes, and a renewed intention to fight hate on the Internet, including setting up a tip line to report Web-based hate. “Canada is a world leader in the development of policies and laws to fight racism, but many Canadians still experience racism and discrimination in their daily lives,” Raymond Chan, minister of state for multiculturalism, said at a press conference in Ottawa. Chan was joined by Justice Minister Irwin Cotler, who promised a multi-point anti-racism plan last year after the firebombing of a library at United Talmud Torahs in Montreal, as well as by Labour and Housing Minister Joe Fontana and Immigration and Citizenship Minister Joe Volpe. "The underlying message of this first-ever Action Plan Against Racism is clear: we seek a Canada in which there will be no sanctuary for hate and no refuge for racism,” Cotler said. The initiative is organized into six priority areas: assisting victims and groups vulnerable to racism and discrimination; developing strategies to promote diversity and combat racism; strengthening the role of civil society; strengthening regional and international co-operation; educating children and youth on diversity and anti-racism; and countering hate and bias ... Data collection on hate-motivated crime will standardize the collection of information on hate crimes, including anti-Semitic incidents ... Canada plans to sign the Council of Europe’s protocol on Web-based racism, signalling Ottawa’s intention to take part in the global fight against Internet hate. As well, a “Countering Internet-Based Hate Crime” program will establish a tip line for reporting online hate and work with Internet service providers ... Bornmann said the Jewish community’s priorities centred around hate crimes and hate on the Internet."
[Jews decide who gets censored and who gets Catholic posts in Argentina. Kirchner is often a Jewish surname in the U.S. But we haven't seen any evidence yet that the president of Argentina is Jewish.]
Argentina: Despite Vatican, President Sacks Controversial Military Bishop,
by Marcela Valente, Inter Press Service News Agency, March 18, 2005
"In a decision running counter to the position taken by the Vatican, Argentine President Néstor Kirchner on Friday sacked the country's military bishop, who had quipped that the health minister should be "thrown into the sea" because he is in favour of decriminalising abortion. After the government's diplomatic efforts to get the Vatican to remove Bishop Antonio Baseotto from his post, the president signed a decree in which he withdrew his support from the 2002 agreement that the Argentine government signed in 2002 when the bishop was appointed by the Vatican. Kirchner also issued a second decree depriving the bishop of the government funds assigned to the military vicariate, which received 20,000 pesos a month (around 6,000 dollars), of which 5,000 pesos (1,700 dollars) went to the bishop ... Fernández said the government's decision "does not imply entering into any kind of debate, dispute or confrontation with the Church," and likened the bishop's dismissal to that of any official who makes controversial remarks. But in this case, the Vatican had actually confirmed the bishop in his post on Monday ... Baseotto has a long history of anti-Semitic and McCarthyist remarks, as well as statements justifying the gross human rights violations committed by the country's last military dictatorship (1976-1983). But a major controversy broke out in late February, when he lashed out against Health Minister Ginés González García. At that time the minister, who is in favour of the distribution of free condoms and the decriminalisation of abortion, became the target of an outburst by the bishop, who in a reference to a biblical passage said he should be "thrown into the sea headfirst with a large millstone around his neck." His remark had an especially strong impact in Argentina, where the security forces actually dumped political prisoners alive into the sea from military aircraft during the dictatorship. Past statements by Baseotto have also included anti-Semitic references. In 1986, when he was a priest in the northern province of Santiago del Estero, he said on a local TV programme that "if pornography is good business, Hebrews will sell pornography. If drugs are good business, they will sell drugs. If they can get more money by blackmailing, they will blackmail, and if they have to destroy their competition, they will do so." Although the local Jewish community expressed its outrage at the time, Baseotto received support and was kept in his post. More recently, the bishop stated in an argument against abortion (which is illegal in Argentina) that "we cross ourselves for the victims of the Nazis. And (killing) the unborn? Is that not an abominable crime?" ... Argentina's Jewish community, the largest in Latin America, has been applying pressure for Baseotto to be removed from his post, a demand that was reiterated Thursday by Carlos Susevich, the father of one of the 29 victims of a 1992 bomb attack on the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires."

Syria envoy wants US, Israel to withdraw troops too,
Reuters, March 23, 2005
"Syria's ambassador to Washington said on Wednesday he hoped the United States and Israel would follow his country's example and withdraw from Iraq and Palestinian areas, just as Syria was leaving Lebanon. "We will withdraw (from Lebanon) as soon as possible, the sooner the better. And we are not talking of two or three months. We will do this very, very quickly," Syria's envoy Imad Moustapha said in a speech at Georgetown University. "I hope this will inspire other countries in the Middle East to withdraw their occupations from Iraq and from Palestine and from Syria itself," he said. "President Bush has many times spoken about making Iraq a model that will inspire the whole Arab world. ... I think the Arab people will love to see this (Syrian) model followed by the Americans and the Israelis." ... The United States has recently stepped up pressure on Syria to complete its pullout, and to stop what Washington considers support for terrorist groups. Washington calls Syria a state sponsor of terrorism, and accuses it of allowing militants and money to flow into Iraq to support the Iraqi insurgency. Moustapha was critical of U.S. policies throughout his speech, saying many were hypocritical or dictated by Israel. He also took a dig at the United States' detention of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. "I do not feel proud that Syria has political detainees just like you have in Guantanamo Bay, people who don't know what are they charged of, when will they ever be released, if they will be tried, and if they have access to their attorneys," he said. "Our plans are by June 2005 not to have a single political prisoner in Syria. We want to make anything similar to your Guantanamo Bay a part of our past," Moustapha said ... "I don't think any country in the world would like to be regarded as an enemy to the United States. If you don't believe me, go and ask the list of 30 countries that were invaded by your troops in the past 30 years."

Berman Leaving Fox for Top Paramount Pictures Post,
Yahoo! News, March 23, 2005
"In a stunning executive shake-up that affects both a major network and a top movie studio, Fox Broadcasting Co. entertainment president Gail Berman is leaving the network to take a top creative post at Paramount Pictures under newly appointed chairman and CEO Brad Grey. Although her destination is clear, the specific details of Berman's new job at Paramount were not immediately available Tuesday. In a statement, the studio would only confirm: "Paramount Pictures is in discussions with Gail Berman for a senior creative role at the studio. We hope to conclude the discussions shortly."... The news of the Berman discussions caught even the most senior executives at Paramount by surprise Tuesday morning. There is speculation that she'll take on an overarching post, overseeing creative aspects of film development for Paramount as well as its sister Viacom labels, MTV Films and Nickelodeon Movies. Berman's role is expected to have the most direct impact on Paramount vice chairman Donald De Line, who reports to Grey. De Line, who was in London on Tuesday, first heard of the Berman discussions via calls from reporters and had no comment. Later in the morning, Grey reached him and, according to studio sources, reassured him that his future was secure. But most observers anticipate that De Line's status will eventually change, and that in turn will affect producer Scott Rudin's relationship with the studio. Rudin has been a major supplier and something of a power behind the scenes. Before taking his current job, De Line produced "The Stepford Wives" with Rudin ... Insiders expect Berman to take on a role akin to that held by Sherry Lansing, who for the past 12 years oversaw the studio's creative side, while Grey would focus on the big picture and oversee business development as Jonathan Dolgen did in his role as chairman of the Viacom Entertainment Group before he resigned that post in June ... In making Berman his creative No. 2, Grey, who began his new job March 1, could conceivably name Berman either president or vice chairman of the motion picture group. But there he faces an obstacle in that Lansing earlier awarded the vice chairman titles to De Line and Rob Friedman."

Bolshoi embroiled in 'pornography' protests,
Ireland Online, March 23, 2005
"Russia’s prestigious Bolshoi Theatre was embroiled in protests today as a pro-Kremlin youth group picketed the premiere of an opera written by a Russian writer it has branded a pornographer. Moving Together, a nationwide youth movement devoted to President Vladimir Putin, has in the past publicly burned books by Vladimir Sorokin, who was commissioned to write the libretto of the new opera. It condemned the state-funded Bolshoi for staging such a work. “We are protesting that a man who is a pornographer and uses foul language is being given a platform in the Russian State Bolshoi Theatre, with state funds,” the group’s leader, Vasily Yakemenko, said. He said his group would not seek to disrupt the evening performance of Children of Rosenthal. “If people want to go to the opera of a pornographer, that’s their choice,” Yakemenko said. Several dozen Moving Together activists, who have been holding daily demonstrations outside the column-fronted theatre in the centre of Moscow, again gathered at its entrance just before tonight’s performance. “Protect Russia’s main theatre stage from a pornographer,” one banner read. They were briefly confronted by a handful of members of a radical youth group, Red Youth, who put out their own show of support for Sorokin."

Suspect Detection Systems hits jackpot in Atlantic City airport deal,
by Zuri Dar, The Marker (Israel), March 23, 2005
"Ramat Gan-based startup Suspect Detection Systems has won a plum contract to help secure the Atlantic City Airport, by means of detecting when people are unreasonably nervous. The United States Transportation Security Administration gave it the contract to install a system identifying unarmed terrorists. The Atlantic City, N.J., airport will install an experimental version this year. SDS beat out a host of American competitors, including Boeing, to secure the contract, valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. The system has won approvals of the Israeli security apparatus. People being checked place their hand on the device and are presented with an array of questions. A special detector measures physiological responses. Questions come in a variety of culturally sensitive versions. The primary fear of a suicide bomber is to be caught, according to Yeshayahu Horowitz, former head of the police's polygraph division and current chief scientist at SDS. The system is based on the belief that the terrorist's fear will be reflected in measurable psycho-physiological parameters. "Foreigners flying El Al are currently subjected to 10-20 minutes of questioning," says SDS CEO Shabtai Shoval. "The line for U.S. immigration authorities is liable to take 90 minutes. Our system is a type of kiosk making an initial assessment within three minutes. If the system identifies a suspect, he can be sent to a personal agent to complete the investigation." Shoval, a former division manager at Comverse Technology, founded SDS along with Horowitz and former deputy Mossad chief Amiram Levin. The founders have sunk hundreds of thousands of shekels of their own funds into the company and have secured a grant from the chief scientist of the Ministry of Trade and Industry."

Blair pledges to fight anti-Semitism,
by Douglas Davis, Jerusalem Post, March 23, 2005
"British Prime Minister Tony Blair has promised the Jewish community he will "never allow the Labor Party to be tarnished by anti-Semitism." Blair was addressing the annual dinner of the Board of Deputies of British Jews on Monday night for the first time since becoming prime minister seven years ago. Referring to Labor Party election posters, which depicted Jewish opposition leader Michael Howard as a Fagin figure and as a flying pig, Blair pledged his friendship to the Jewish community and to Israel. "I think you know that my support for the Jewish community is unwavering," he said. "I am, and always will be, a strong supporter and friend of the Jewish community and of the State of Israel." As long as he led the Labor Party, he said, "it will always treat the Jewish community with respect and admiration. And we will always fight anti-Semitism with all our might because we know it is not a joke. It is a serious threat, and the day we forget it is the day we start to repeat it."

Three arrested for anti-Semitism in Serbia,
Jerusalem Post, March 23, 2005
"Belgrade police have arrested three men for plastering anti-Semitic posters in the Serbian capital, the authorities said Wednesday. Interior Minister Dragan Jocic declined to identify the suspects but said they were "young people ... found in possession of copies of the posters" identical to those that appeared Tuesday at the entrance to Belgrade's Jewish cemetery and along Jewish Street in Belgrade's historic city center. "Serbia is not an anti-Semitic place, these are extremely rare cases ... we want to know what incited the young men" to put up the messages that also blasted Serbia's liberal B92 Radio and Television station and two pro-Western human rights groups. The posters were signed by a hitherto unknown group calling itself National Order, saying B92 was anti-Serb, had a negative influence on Serb youth and spread "Western diseases" in Serbia. Jocic said he met with the head of Serbia's tiny Jewish community, Aca Singer, to offer assurances that police would "thoroughly investigate the incident," as promised on Tuesday by Serbia's pro-Western president, Boris Tadic, who called the messages "absolutely unacceptable." Later Wednesday, the Jewish community released a statement expressing hope that "state bodies will find and punish perpetrators and prevent any recurrence or a lapse into physical violence." The incident was "well organized, it was coordinated and financed from one place" the statement also said, without elaborating. Serbia's deputy prime minister, Miroljub Labus, agreed that "what happened was not spontaneous at all," adding that "it was a deliberate, organized attempt to try discredit our country." He also didn't elaborate. Last month, Singer said he had received anonymous hate mail telling him "Jews should leave Serbia."
Iceland provides refuge for chess champ Fischer,
New Zealand Herald, March 23, 2005
"Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer's Icelandic citizenship has been finalised and his supporters hope he can fly to Iceland this week, ending a lengthy detention in Japan and avoiding deportation to the United States. Fischer -- wanted in the United States for violating sanctions against former Yugoslavia by playing a chess match there in 1992 -- has been detained in Japan since July, when he was arrested for travelling on what US officials said was an invalid passport. Iceland's parliament had granted Fischer, 62, citizenship on Monday, opening the door for the fugitive American to settle in the tiny North Atlantic republic where he won the world title in 1972 in a classic Cold War encounter with Soviet champion Boris Spassky, a victory that made him something of a hero in Iceland. "The formal procedure is finished. Mr Fischer is a true Icelander now," Iceland's ambassador to Japan, Thordur Oskarsson, told Reuters on Wednesday, adding that he was notifying the Japanese government of that fact. Fischer has used a series of legal moves to fight deportation to the United States, including seeking refugee status, renouncing his US citizenship and unveiling plans to marry his companion Miyoko Watai, a four-time Japan women's chess champion. Iceland offered Fischer a home late last year and in February agreed to issue him a special passport that would allow him to travel through 15 West European countries in what is known as the Schengen Zone ... The United States said on Tuesday that it was disappointed at its ally Iceland's decision to grant Fischer citizenship ... In an interview with a Philippine radio station, Fischer praised the strikes and said he wanted to see America "wiped out". Born to a Jewish mother, Fischer has also stirred controversy with anti-Semitic remarks."

ITAR - TASS, March 23, 2005
"The Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FEOR) on Monday protested against the printing of school notebooks depicting skinheads. The covers of 48-page notebooks show a skinhead boy embracing a girl in a skinhead-type outfit. The notebooks, printed by the Eksmo publishing house, also offer a dictionary of skinhead slang. “The printing of 200,000 school notebooks showing fascist youngsters and explaining the notions that make up the basis of their antihuman cult of force cannot but be considered a provocation,” the FEOR press service said. It said, “The printing of such notebooks is a blow to the unity of the multinational Russian people and can be regarded as an attempt to broadly promote the antihuman youth subculture of skinheads, which entails the revival of Nazi ideology.” FEOR said the notebooks were printed in Russia on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War. The press service expressed the hope that “the organisers of this criminal action will not get away unpunished.”
[These rates of poverty below are those for Israel proper, and not the surrounding "occupied"Arab territories which are mired to the neck in Jewish-enforce poverty. It must also be understood that expressly Jewish "poverty" in Israel largely reflects the steady stream of immigrants to the Jewish state, including the Ethiopian Falasha. Impoverished non-Arabs who are mercilessly exploited in the Jewish state also include "immigrant workers" and literal sex slaves, who are bought and sold by Jewish pimps.]
Bank of Israel: Arab poverty rate triple Jewish rate. 46.2% of Arab households lived in poverty in 2003, compared with 14.6% of Jewish households,
by Zeev Klein, Globes (Israel), March 23, 2005
"46.2% of Arab households in Israel lived in poverty in 2003, compared with 14.6% of Jewish households, according to a study by the Bank of Israel research division. The report will be published in early April this year. The Bank of Israel research division found that the incidence of poverty among Israeli Arabs was higher than in the Jewish sector. Furthermore, the proportion of households living in poverty in the non-Jewish sector was even higher, taking into account factors like education, the family car and its size, rate of participation in the civilian labor force, and employment in various fields. The study shows that while the poverty rate in the Arab sector in 2003 was 6% higher than in 2000, and 18.6% higher than in 1995, poverty among Jewish families has risen by only 2.3% since 2000, and by 1.2% since 1995."

Millionaire Cuts Plea Deal On Child Rape Charge,
by Tracy Vedder, Komo News- TV, March 17, 2005
"A Bainbridge Island millionaire is free after cutting a plea deal with prosecutors over child rape charges. David Nusbaum walked out of jail a free man after spending less than a year behind bars. In April of 2004, Nusbaum was charged with repeatedly raping and molesting a 13-year-old girl at his Bainbridge home. Detectives say the assaults began when the girl was just 6-years-old. She and her mother lived with Nusbaum for about nine years. Prosecutors cut a deal Wednesday, dropping the charges to third-degree assault with sexual motivation and turning a potential 10-year sentence into just eleven months in jail. "We are confident that he had inappropriate contact with that girl, that's what the charges reflect," said Kitsap County Prosecutor Russ Hauge, "but that's about all we can prove." But several sources tell KOMO 4 News that's ridiculous. The rape case was set to start last Monday. The lead detective believes the case is solid. "We had a very credible witness, or I should say victim," said Bainbridge Police Detective Scott Weiss, "there's also some scientific evidence probably admitted at trial that was going to be very damning on Mr. Nusbaum's part." The victim, now 14, was ready and willing to testify. She'd even gotten familiar with the courtroom just last Friday. Last April the victim spoke to KOMO 4 News . She said talking about what happened helped her heal. "It helped tremendously, it felt like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders that I'd been carrying around for seven years," she said. Over the weekend the deputy prosecutor handling the case had a family emergency. In the space of just three days, the new deputy prosecutor decided to deal, saying a civil suit by the victim damaged the criminal case. "The argument that the defense would make -- that this was all a fabrication just to get at him and his money -- looks pretty good," explained Hauge. "What does money have to do with someone touching their child?" wondered the victim's mother. "Nothing." Seeing him walk free Thursday, she believes prosecutors stole something precious from her daughter. "This is a child who is brave enough to talk, she should have a chance." Although this case is virtually over, detectives are concerned that Nusbaum could still be a flight risk. That's because he still faces the possibility of charges in several other states and he's worth about $11 million."

Nevzlin, Yukos partners buy 26% of Petrochemical Enterprises : The Menatep group will also finance an investment by the controlling shareholders in place of Bank Hapoalim, which opposed the deal,
by Shai Shalev, Globes (Israel), March 20, 2005
"The controlling shareholders of Israel Petrochemical Enterprises David Federman ; Gima Investments, controlled by Israel Petrochemical Enterprises chairman Jacob Gottenstein; and Alex Pesel have recruited a powerful partner for the controlling interest : the Menatep group, owned by billionaires Leonid Nevzlin, Vladimir Dubov, and Mikhail Brudno. The trio, who are among the owners of Russian fuel company Yukos, now live in Israel, after having fled Russia where they were accused of tax evasion. The three claim that they were victims of political persecution ... A few weeks ago, Bank Hapoalim, which had funded the owners' purchase of control in Israel Petrochemicals, reportedly refused to allow Menatap entry into the company. Presumably, the bank's refusal was related to the police investigation of its HaYarkon Street branch on suspicions of a multimillion dollar money laundering operation. (The trio apparently have no connection to the affair)."
Racism alive and well in Israeli society,
By TONY JASSEN, Jerusalem Post, March 22, 2005
"A survey conducted on occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed Tuesday in the Knesset for the first time in Israel, demonstrated that racism is alive and well in Israeli society. According to the survey, 43% of Israelis are unwilling to marry, or have their children marry, Ethiopians. More than 50% refuse to live in the same neighborhood as Arab families, 25% would not want their children to marry religious Jews and more than 10% were averse to their children marrying Sephardim. And these numbers are only the tip of the survey's iceberg. In response to the results, Mehereta Baruch, the former Ambassador contestant and member of the Ethiopian community, said, while officiating at the Knesset ceremony, "I feel bad for these people. They have a narrow minded view. Surely just as they hold these opinions, they hold themselves back from many beautiful things in life, because they are afraid to try and afraid from something different."

Ofer Brothers to develop Manhattan luxury project,
by Haim Handwerker, Haaretz (Israel), March 23, 2005
"The New York Post published initial details yesterday of plans by Eyal Ofer to develop a luxury residential project in a prestigious section of Manhattan in partnership with American investor Goldman Sachs. The project, which will include two apartment towers of 19 and 50 stories, will replace the Mayflower Hotel. The project, bordered by Central Park West, Broadway, 61st and 62nd Streets, is said to be one of the most luxurious and expensive in Manhattan. The plans call for building 250-280 residential units, averaging 2,100 square feet per apartment. Some 88,000 square feet of stores will occupy the bottom four floors. The target occupancy date is late 2007. Architectural firm Cesar Pelli and Associates is designing the project. Ofer, the son of Sammy Ofer, one of the owners of The Israel Corporation, Zim, and United Mizrahi Bank, bought the Mayflower last summer, along with an adjacent empty lot, with managing partners Arthur and Lie Zeckendorf of Goldman Sachs' Whitehall Fund for $401 million. The group closed the hotel and has now demolished it. The partners paid top dollar, just as real estate magnate Yitzhak Tshuva did to acquire the Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue. New York real estate sources told Haaretz that none other than Tshuva had expressed interest in picking up the Mayflower property prior to Ofer. The sources claim that Ofer swiped the deal from under Tshuva's nose, but his family denied the allegation. Razing the Mayflower, whose aura had faded since falling on hard times, drew much less attention than Tshuva has faced in his efforts to level the Plaza, still considered a wondrous and important landmark."
Anti-Zionism at London school intimidates some Jewish students,
By Daniella Peled, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, March 21, 2005
"The University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies has a reputation as a world-class center of learning. But recently the college has been in the news more for the anti-Israel sentiments of some of its students than for the quality of its teaching. A series of high-profile controversies have left Jewish students at the central London college feeling threatened and intimidated, and some are warning that tensions are spiraling out of control. The latest furor centers on an article published in SOAS Spirit, the glossy student magazine. The article, “When Only Violence Will Do,” scoffs at the concept of “innocent” Israeli victims, describes the whole of Israel as a Jewish colony that should be dismantled and calls for all Zionists to be “exposed.” “Non-violent resistance is no solution either,” writes its author, Nasser Amin. “We know what the Israelis can do to unarmed peace activists. Violence, rather than feebleness, generates power for the oppressed.” A graduate student in Near and Middle Eastern studies who heads the college’s Jewish club said the article made him feel uncomfortable. “There are Israeli students here, and people like myself who consider themselves Zionists,” said Gavin Gross, 43. “The article seems to imply that we’re all targets.” The magazine’s editor, Matthew Phillips, said it was his responsibility “to give freedom of speech to students at the school.” That argument, however, seems somewhat weakened by the union’s attempt last month to bar Israeli Embassy official Roey Gilad from addressing a Jewish society event. That decision eventually was overturned by the college administration. But this is just the latest in a series of incidents to hit the college, long dubbed “the School of Anti-Semitism” in Jewish student circles ... Describing the aggressive atmosphere at the union’s general meeting, Gross said, “It was used as a forum to attack ‘apartheid’ Israel, the ‘war criminal’ Ariel Sharon, the Zionist press and Mossad conspiracies. But the meeting shouldn’t have been about Israel at all.” But the Middle East conflict is the dominant issue on the school’s campus. The student union officially considers Zionism as a form of racism, and in November 2004 the school hosted an international conference called “Resisting Israeli Apartheid.”
Libeskind in final round for Poland's Jewish Museum design,
United Jewish Council of Greater Toledo, March 22, 2005
"In total eleven architects are competing in the final round for the design of Polands planned museum on the history of Polish Jews, it was stated Tuesday. Among the contestants are renowned U.S. architects Peter Eisenmann and Daniel Libeskind, who designed the masterplan for the new U.S. World Trade Centre, the head of the competition commission Bohdan Paczkowski told reporters in Warsaw. The choice among the originally 119 proposals had been so difficult that the commission had accepted 11 rather than, as originally planned, nine contestants into the final round, he added ... Architects from in total 36 countries had presented designs to the commission, and among the designs that made it into the final rounds were proposals from Poland, Britain, Germany, Israel, U.S., Finland, Japan, Spain, and the Netherlands, said Paczkowski."
[This is the wrong idea. We think the Statue of Liberty should be torn down and put Anne Frank's likeness there instead. How about Joan of Arc for posthumous U.S. citizenry? St. Francis of Asissi? Martin Luther? The prophet Mohammed? All the popes? Lawrence of Arabia? Copernicus? Galileo? Mahtma Gandhi? Any Palestinian child murdered by the Israelis?]
Lawmaker Seeks U.S. Citizenship For Anne Frank,
WNBC, March 21, 2005
"Anne Frank, whose teenage memoir has taught generations of Americans about the Holocaust, would be made a United States citizen under a bill being pushed by Rep. Steve Israel. The New York Democrat said Monday he would introduce a bill giving Frank honorary citizenship, a distinction previously conferred on Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa and a handful of other adults. Israel plans to introduce the bill in two weeks when Congress resumes, calling Frank "a symbol of bravery and hope." Born in Germany in 1929, Frank and her family left for Amsterdam four years later, seeking to escape rising anti-Semitism."

Academic Witch-Hunt at Depaul University,
by Steve Plaut, Chronwatch, March 22, 2005
"Depaul University is a large, if not particularly renowned academically, Catholic college in Chicago. Until recently the main cause of controversy surrounding Depaul was its insistence on employing notorious anti-Semite Norman Finkelstein as an assistant professor in its political science department. But recently Depaul took a giant step in implementing Orwellism and anti-democratic suppression of political incorrectness on its campus. The immediate target of Depaul's campaign against political incorrectness was Thomas Klocek, a part-time adjunct professor at DePaul University's so-called "School for New Learning". ("New learning" evidently is not something Depaul confuses with learning, as the events there show.) Klocek's crime? He was guilty of expressing support for Israel. Evidently Holocaust Denial is ok at Depaul, but not expressing support for Israel. After 14 years of continuous employment at the Chicago-based college, Klocek was suspended with pay last September, and then stayed suspended - this time without pay - through the winter quarter. Klocek is guilty of nothing more than expressing pro-Israel views in the face of extremist Palestinian propaganda on Depaul's campus, including students and non-students proliferating the usual lies and canards about Israel and Rachel Corrie. Klocek's courses have ranged from Critical Thinking to College Writing to Languages and Cultures of the World. By all accounts, he was a popular teacher and his classes were always full. Despite having an unblemished record during that span, DePaul summarily dismissed him from his duties after the school learned that he had insulted and demeaned. several Muslim students at a campus fair for extracurricular groups. Klocek had publicly expressed his belief that, "strictly speaking, right now there is no such place as Palestine on the map. The Palestinian people were simply Arabs who lived in the West Bank and Gaza." We seem to recall that Galileo was also persecuted by Church institutions for daring to tell the truth! Klocek, by the way, is Roman Catholic. With no current income and facing the possibility of losing the health insurance he desperately needs for a serious kidney condition, Klocek, the 21st century Galileo of Depaul, decided to go public with his fight. The Chicago Jewish news runs a large expose of Depaul's auto da fe against Klocek this week. The university contends that Klocek's case "is not a case of academic freedom but a situation of inappropriate behavior outside the classroom by a university employee," according to Mattson, the university spokesperson. Yeah, right, while another Depaul professor has made a career out of promoting and cheering Holocaust Deniers and serving as the darling of neonazi web sites!! HIS "behavior" does not disturb the Depaul Inquisitors ... Depaul's sudden horror at the supposed "unprofessorial behavior" by Klocek (they allege he made an impolite hand gesture to Muslim students who had been calling him names) stands in sharp contrast with the university's record regarding Norman Finkelstein, the most openly anti-Semitic Jew on the planet. Depaul employs Finkelstein as anassistant professor in political science, this after Finkelstein got fired from two NY area adjunct teaching jobs (at NYU and Hunter College) because of his pseudo-scholarship and fraudulent rantings against Jews and Israel. Finkelstein is a disciple of Holocaust Denier David Irving and claims Irving is an authoritative historian. Finkelstein refers to the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis as the "Six Million" in quotation marks and says that nearly every Holocaust survivor is a fraud and a thief and a liar. (Finkelstein's own parents are Holocaust survivors, and Finkelstein has long tried to capitalize on this as a way to legitimize his own anti Semitism. The psychiatry department at Depaul might have interesting things to say about this.) ... Gven the sensitivity of the Church today to charges of anti-Semitism and the sincere attempts by the Vatican to atone for centuries of Church persecution of Jews, the employment of Finkelstein by Depaul as an "academic" is an open outrage and insult to the world and especially to Catholics."

Boycott World Pride 2005,
Boycott World Pride
"An Open Letter to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer Groups and Individuals
We ask you to join us in a boycott of travel to World Pride Jerusalem 2005 as part of the international boycott of Israel and the campaign to divest from Israel. As you know, many groups have joined the movement to boycott Israeli goods and to divest from Israel in protest of the ongoing occupation of Palestinian lands, the construction of the apartheid wall in the West Bank, and the destruction of Palestinian olive trees, homes, and villages. We believe that the goal of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) liberation is best served by supporting local community organizing while also supporting the liberation struggles of all oppressed peoples. We support the work of Jerusalem Open House (the local sponsor of World Pride 2005 in Jerusalem) in fighting queer oppression, and we understand and respect that LGBTIQ people and organizations within Israel and Palestine will decide for themselves how to relate to World Pride. However, we ask LGBTIQ people from other countries to boycott travel to Israel and not to attend World Pride 2005 in Jerusalem. Although Jerusalem was designated as an "international city" by the United Nations, travel to Jerusalem may only be accomplished with the consent of the Israeli government and its military forces. Palestinians and other people of Arab and North African descent have routinely been barred from the City of Jerusalem by the occupying Israeli forces. We are appalled that InterPride chose Jerusalem as the site of the second World Pride event and is encouraging LGBTIQ people from all over the world to ignore the boycott and spend significant funds in Israel, bolstering its tourist economy and its disingenuous claim to be a "free," democratic, state. We are also appalled at the blatant misrepresentation of the event as one that will be open to all LGBTIQ people and the chosen theme "Love Without Borders."The promotion of this event by InterPride has included the distribution of thousands of DVDs at Pride 2004 in San Francisco and New York. The DVD promotes the "great parties" and "beautiful women" in Israel. The DVD also promotes the fact that the Israeli army allows openly lesbian and gay people to serve. It does not discuss the role of the army in oppressing people in the Occupied Territories, but does condemn the Palestinian Authority for its treatment of lesbian and gay people. The only mention of the Intifada (Palestinian resistance struggle) is to say that it makes it more difficult for lesbian and gay Palestinians to come out or to "escape" to Israel. We understand that some conservative and right-wing people in Israel are opposed to World Pride being held in Jerusalem because they oppose LGBTIQ rights, and that some LGBTIQ people are considering attending the event to oppose these forces and support the local LGBTIQ groups. We certainly understand this impulse, but we believe that after examining all of the many political issues involved it is more important to boycott travel to World Pride 2005 in Jerusalem to send the message to Israel that the civil rights victories gained by some LGBTIQ people within Israel do not justify or excuse the oppression of the Palestinian people or the occupation of their lands."

Nazi slurs and New Labour,
Daily Mail (UK), March 22, 2005
"Even by the standards of the filthy campaign in which New Labour is subjecting Michael Howard to vicious personal attacks, the latest smears plumb new depths. Yesterday, a senior Labour MP, Kevin McNamara, said the Tory leader's plans for a crackdown on unauthorised travellers' sites had the 'whiff of the gas chambers about them'. Former union boss Rodney Bickerstaffe reinforced this message by insidiously linking Tory policy and the treatment of gipsies by the Nazis in World War II. This is the politics of the gutter. Mr Howard is Jewish and, unlike Messrs McNamara and Bickerstaffe, lost relatives in Hitler's concentration camps. But we've been here before. There was the sly anti-semitism of the Fagin and flying pigs posters. And there was Labour minister Michael O'Brien writing in antisemitic terms in The Muslim Weekly and asking: 'Will Mr Howard stand up for the right of Muslim women to wear the hijab'. Such sickening tactics speak volumes for the bankruptcy of Labour's thinking. But more than anything they show how successful the Tory leader has been in raising the issues that affect the majority of people and how desperate the Prime Minister is to avoid a real debate."

At Beit Warszawa, Polish Jews experienc a liberal alternative ,
by Carol Slutsky, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, March 21, 2005
"In a large white villa in the southern part of Warsaw, in a room with bright paintings exploding all over the walls, a woman plays the piano. A CD of a New York Jewish jazz group plays over her music, and in the kitchen people cook up a big lunch. The music and the meal follow a morning spent studying Torah. The night before, there had been traditional services and a communal dinner, usually drawing between 40 and 50 people. This is a typical Shabbat at Beit Warszawa, Warsaw’s progressive Jewish congregation ... Everything about the service recalls the Shabbat experience of many Reform congregations in the United States. That’s not surprising — the community was started in 1999 by a group of American expatriates and Poles who were trying to create an alternative to the Orthodox community, which prays in Warsaw at the Nozyk Synagogue. Until last year, the group met in a number of apartments. Then Seweryn Ashkenazi, a Polish-born American businessman, provided the villa that now is Beit’s home ... Since the fall of communism in 1989, Poles with Jewish roots have been grappling with their identities, and some are afraid to “come out” as Jews in a country still perceived by many to be anti-Semitic. Today, as Weinsberg pointed out, “This is a safe country. We have no terrorism, and a pro-Israel government.”
[Of course it's no big deal that Poland's foreign minister is Jewish. That's why this fact is featured by this Jewish news agency.]
Poland’s foreign minister is Jewish, but most people say it’s no big deal,
By Carolyn Slutsky, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, March 14, 2005
"Adam Daniel Rotfeld, who replaced Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz as Poland’s foreign minister earlier this year, was born to a large Jewish family in the eastern part of the country, near what is now the Ukrainian city of Lvov. JTA was unable to obtain an interview with Rotfeld, but in an interview he gave to Polityka, a Polish magazine, he spent the years between 1941 and 1948 hiding in a monastery, and then he lived in a children’s home in Krakow. He was one of two family members to survive the Holocaust. After the war, Rotfeld studied international law and diplomacy in Warsaw and Krakow. He mostly ignored his Jewish background. That’s typical of people in his situation, according to Stanislaw Krajewski, a Jewish leader in Poland and the American Jewish Committee’s consultant on that country. He is open about being Jewish, but he makes no attempt to join the Jewish community, and community leaders respect that position ... In 1989 Rotfeld became director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. He remained there until 2002, when he was named vice minister of foreign affairs. Poland was instrumental in aiding the recent revolution in Ukraine, and Ukraine’s continuing democratization is one of Rotfeld’s primary concerns. Rotfeld also is focused on Poland’s involvement in the Iraq conflict ... Rotfeld is not the first prominent Polish Jewish politician in the post-Communist era. Bronislaw Geremek, a former foreign minister, is now a member of the European Parliament. He had a Jewish upbringing but avoids talking about his Jewish roots ... Since the end of the Communist era, several politicians and other notable Poles have been accused by their detractors of having Jewish roots. Tadeusz Mazowiecki, who in 1989 became the country’s first post-Communist prime minister, lost a bid for the presidency the next year. His loss was attributed, in part, to a whisper campaign that accused him of being Jewish. “In general, people are accused of Jewishness by their opponents,” Krajewski said. “Interestingly, the attacks are more fierce against those who are believed or gossiped to be Jewish but have not admitted anything, perhaps because they have nothing to ‘admit.’ President Kwasniewski belongs to this category.” ... Today Poland is seen by many as one of Israel’s best friends in Europe. Krajewski said, “Poland is among the most pro-Israel countries. Paradoxically, in Poland — and I think in much of Europe — Jews are sometimes less willing to promote pro-Israeli attitudes than non-Jews, who are not afraid of the double loyalty accusations.”

U.S. Jewish inmates have stake in case before Supreme Court,
By Matthew E. Berger, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, March 17, 2005
"When Brandl Rifka was serving time in a Florida prison, she asked for a special meal to break the Yom Kippur fast. Instead, she was given ham. “They did it purposefully,” she recalls angrily. Brandl Rifka, who asked that she be identified by her Hebrew name because she is on probation, said she became more religiously observant during the two years she spent in Florida prisons after being convicted of fraud. In a telephone interview from Florida, she said she faced anti-Semitism on a daily basis from prisoners and guards who, she says, inhibited her attempts to practice her religion, and by others who suggested she accept Jesus. “It’s beyond punishment,” she said. “If you’re a Jewish prisoner, you’re ostracized in many ways.” The question of inmates’ ability to practice their religion will come before the U.S. Supreme Court on March 21. The court will hear oral arguments in the case of Cutter v. Wilkinson, an Ohio case that is challenging the constitutionality of a law passed by Congress in 2000 that was intended to expand religious freedom in prison ... It is unclear how many Jews are in prison, because the government does not keep statistics on inmates’ religion. Friedman said his organization is in touch with 5,500 inmates, but estimates the number
of Jews in prison could be double that ... Richard Dobelle, who spent more than 12 years in federal prisons for trafficking cocaine, recalled in a phone interview from Florida that he told the chaplain at one federal prison that he couldn’t have grain products on his tray during Passover, but the Christian chaplain didn’t tell the kitchen staff ... A wide consortium of Jewish groups are parties to a brief, filed by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, that says the law has the purpose of protecting the free exercise of religion from unnecessary government interference ... Meanwhile, experts and former prisoners say Jews are at a disadvantage because there are only a handful of them at each penitentiary, as opposed to many Christians and Muslims. “It’s like Tonto and the Lone Ranger riding alone, with all the Indians around them,” said Robert Burns, a former inmate who is now director of prisoner services at the Aleph Institute, a Chabad organization that reaches out to Jews in prison."
Rapid response assembles Jewish turnout at CMU for anti-Zionist speaker,
By Adam Brandolph, Pittchron.com (The Official Web Site of the Jewish Chronicle of Pittsburgh)
"Jewish community members showed up in large numbers for Norman Finkelstein's appearance at Carnegie Mellon University, thanks to efforts by the United Jewish Federations to recruit community members to, as one person in the audience said, "put warm bodies in the seats." Jewish Pittsburghers were called upon at synagogue, the Jewish Community Center and by e-mail to raise awareness and to support Jewish students at Finkelstein's lecture Monday evening at CMU. Finkelstein, an assistant professor of political science at DePaul University in Chicago and author of "The Holocaust Industry," and the forthcoming "Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History," was brought to CMU under the University Lecture Series and the Palestinian Awareness Series, and sponsored by the Arab Student Organization, the Muslim Student Organization, the Pittsburgh Palestine Solidarity Committee, and Students for Justice in Palestine. He is the third speaker in five weeks to speak negatively about Israel and/or Judaism at CMU. Ali Abunimah, co-founder of the Electronic Intifada, (and frequent co-lecturer with Finkelstein) and Malik Zulu Shabazz, national chair of the New Black Panther Party for Defense, spoke at CMU last month. Unlike those events, the Jewish community was well represented at the Finkelstein lecture, with dozens of senior citizens waiting in line one hour before its 5 p.m. start. The first in line were Mordecai and Sibyl Treblow of Squirrel Hill. They said they came to show their support for Jewish students on campus. With a strategy devised by Hillel JUC Director Aaron Weil, as supported by the UJF, a rapid response team of more than 200 people trained in Israel advocacy were sent an e-mail about the event. Another 200 people from the UJF Board of Delegates were also e-mailed, according to UJF Director of Community and Public Affairs Jeff Cohan. Those efforts produced a turnout that included more than 200 people, many of whom were from outside the university. In spite of the large turnout, Cohan stressed that no CMU students were denied access to the event, and in fact, there were empty seats in the hall. As Finkelstein began his speech, "Legitimate and Illegitimate Differences and Disagreements on the Israel-Palestinian Conflict," the soft-spoken New Yorker immediately introduced himself as being the son of survivors of Auschwitz, which he used as a badge of infallibility throughout the lecture. Calling Anti-Defamation League Director Abraham Foxman "the current grand wizard of the ADL" (an allusion to Ku Klux Klan-like behavior), he said that whenever Israel comes under scrutiny from the rest of the world, the ADL calls it anti-Semitism ... Cohan said it was the success the community had in turning out its supporters that prompted Finkelstein to tone down his remarks. "We are pleased with the fact that we put so many Jews in the seats that [Finkelstein] dramatically changed the content of his lecture," he said. However, the student groups that sponsored Finkelstein's lecture were not as pleased. They produced a letter, a copy of which was placed on each seat, suggesting that students were turned away from the lecture "because the seats are filled with people who don't want you to hear an alternative point of view."
I Don't Hate Jews, I Hate Everybody, [blog]
by Robert Lindsay, Robert Lindsay, February 22, 2005
"I left some comments recently on a comment thread on a post on one of the sites I frequent, the Leftist Lenin's Tomb. I went back to check them the next day and three of the four had been removed by Lenin, party-line style, with the notation "anti-Semitic comment removed". After that were more comments of people appalled at my "anti-Jewish outburst", saying I believe in the Vast Jewish Conspiracy, etc. This particular subthread started out when I misremembered Tony Cliff's relationship to Israel. As the former leader of the British Trotskyite Socialist Workers Party (SWP), I thought I had read he was Jewish (he was) and had taken a very wimpy, almost pro-Israel line on the Zionist question. I suggested that he took such a pro-Israeli line due to his being Jewish (duh). It turned out that I was totally wrong on Cliff's Zionist line - he was a very hardline anti-Zionist to the very end, and good for him. In doing some research on Trotskyism, I apologized for my factual error. I then posted a brief history of Trotskyism and its relationship to the Jews from the site of a Jewish professor in Canada, Werner Cohn. I said Trotskyism had been largely Jewish in the 20's, 30's and early 40's. It was still a heavily Jewish movement up until 1967, when Trotskyism started to mark US imperialism and its various attack dogs, like the Zionist entity, as prime targets. At this time, coincidental with the 1967 War, which caused many Jews, especially in the US, to rediscover their roots and passionately promote Israel's cause, many other Jews also left Trotskyism in disgust due to the movement's intensified anti-Zionist stand. I then noted that Israel is often an Achilles heel for many Jewish Leftists. I pointed out that in my studies of the neoconservative movement in the US and the "Pro-War Left" (PWL) movement in Britain, one thing struck me - so many of them were Jewish. After long research, I knew it was true of the neocons in the US (that neoconservatism is a Jewish-led and Jewish-dominated movement is clear as air with enough study - see, for instance Kevin McDonald's superb work on Jewish-neocon link). The British PWL Movement is a movement that I just recently became aware of, exemplified by such blogs as Harry's House, Johann Hari, Norman Geras, Oliver Kamm and such authors as David Aaranovitch, Nick Cohen and Melanie Phillips. At least one (Gene) and maybe more or all of the main posters at Harry's Place are Jewish, as are Kamm, Geras, Cohen, Philipps and Aaronovitch ... Over and over, as I delved into the PWL, went to their websites and read their stuff, I got suspicious. They wrote excessively about the Jews, Judaism, Nazism, Muslims, the Holocaust, Israel, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. They reviewed many books and other works by Jewish authors and playwrights. They also reviewed books about Jews, prominent Jews, Judaism, anti-Semitism, Nazism, the Holocaust, the "Muslim threat", Israel, and endless combinations of these themes, such as this book by a Jewish author about Jews and Nazism. Or this look at a book by a Jewish author on slavery, with a perils of evil Islam reference tossed in. They often discussed Jewish movements, leaders and thinkers and the role of the Jews in this or that movement, trend or school of thinking. They wrote poems and haikus about Jews. All of this cross-referenced eternally in the familiar solipsistic sense of the Jewish tribal activist or the hyperethnocentric Jewish person ... Wow, such lexical and thematic dexterity! How to somehow work so many obscure references to Jews, Nazis, Judaism, Zionism and anti-Semitism into one post without doing summersaults! Despite their liberal-Left leanings, oddly, all of the pro-War Left were Zionists, often hardline Zionists, with the usual obsessive, paranoid focus on the poor Zionist entity and her interminable sufferings. They bashed Christians in the usual Jewish chauvinist style while never uttering a single unkind word about Judaism. There was the expected obsession with the Terror War and the evils of the big bad Muslims and the familiar near-pathological hypersensitive obsession with anti-Semitism. As expected, they obsessed on the swarms of anti-Semitic hobgoblins, real and imagined, infesting the planet, lurking under every bed and jumping out at you from around every corner. As usual, they sensationalized even dubious of reports on anti-Semitism. Par for the course, most of the people they called anti-Semites were innocent of the charge, including the sublime Jewish prophet howling in the wilderness, Noam Chomsky. Chomsky is a noble, brilliant Jewish runaway slave, fled to the North and criticizing the happy life of the Jewish slaves on Master Organized Jewry's plantation ... A lot more suspicion and a little more digging and I slowly confirmed that many of the British PWL were British leftwing and liberal Jews, moving Right with the War on Terror. In fact, the PWL Movement may be a parallel, later movement in tandem with the Left-to-Right drift amongst US Jews that spawned and fed the neocons ... Although many US Gentiles have been making similar ideological shifts, I noted repeatedly that US liberals and left-wingers moving to the Right were often Jewish, much more than one would think by chance. All of the US Jews moving to the Right profiled above are, needless to say, passionate Zionists ... If any Gentile "outsider" (like me) dares to broach the "secret topics that Jews can only discuss with themselves", most Jews and many Judeophiles will bash them ferociously as anti-Semites, even if the Gentile makes the same comments about the Jews that Jews make about themselves when they think no one is listening. This tribal double standard seems to be profoundly unfair and immoral. While Jews tolerate all sorts of discussions in these Jews-only fora (including often-ferocious criticisms of Jews, Jewish jokes, etc.), it's still pretty taboo for Jewish authors to discuss these "sensitive subjects" with the "outsiders", i.e. in the non-Jewish media. Brave, noble Jewish prophets who dare step off the Jewish Plantation to discuss the dirty linen with the frightening goys are often ruthlessly gang-bullied and ordered by other members of the Tribe to "Shut up!" amid cries of, "Are you trying to start a pogrom?" There is a mentality of, "There are certain things we only discuss with our own kind". So now, as a result of the utterly harmless statements and two airy, idle, innocuous speculations above, I am now a big fat anti-Semitic Naziboy. Well, well. It won't be the first, but I never expected it from the Left. In Summer of 2002, after a few months study, I adopted the Palestinian cause and started strongly opposing Israel. Before, I was the usual wishy-washy "let's talk peace" fence-sitting US liberal on the subject. I've been active for almost three years now, debating Zionists on the Web anonymously. Previously, no sane person ever called me Nazi or anti-Semite. Suddenly, as an enemy of Israel and supporter of the Palestinians, I have been called these things 100,000 times at least, or so it seems. I've gotten many threats, including death threats, challenges to fight, threats to beat me up, to fire me from my job, to destroy my business, to uncover dirt on me, to destroy my reputation and career. Since I was anonymous, there were endless attempts to find out my real name, address, phone number, school history, work history, town of residence, life history, you name it. Dossiers or files were made listing my postings. I dealt with my share of stalkers and harassers. Debater opponents posted lists of dozens or hundreds of my annotated, cross-referenced quotes, trailing back years. They somehow uncovered nym and nym, linking them all, and putting them into Big Fat Files. Creepy. The creepiest of the harassers, stalkers, and threateners were often US Jews associated with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and Jewish Defense League (JDL). Others were associated with heavily Jewish "anti-racist", "anti-fascist", or "anti-revisionist" liberal-to-Leftist groups. A number of them came from Ken McVay's anti-revisionist Nizkor website."

Betrayed by mob, 'the old man' sang,
by William Sherman, New York Daily News, March 19, 2005
"Burton Kaplan of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, is the last man you would suspect of being the trusted intermediary between the Mafia and the two NYPD detectives now indicted as contract killers for the mob. He worked for years as an importer and sportswear manufacturer in the Garment District. Pisces Trading was one of his companies. His daughter is a highly successful professional woman. That's one side of Burton Kaplan. The other side is that for nearly 50 years, Kaplan has been a confidant, adviser and friend of the city's highest-ranking mafiosi, not to mention earning millions of dollars as one of the biggest marijuana importers in U.S. history. He had connections in Mexico, South America and Asia. The wiseguys from various crime families affectionately called him "The Old Man." On one occasion alone, Kaplan was paid $500,000 in cash for a single marijuana delivery in Staten Island, according to law enforcement records. Kaplan had a secret warehouse in Staten Island where he kept the marijuana, the records detail. He was rich enough to make $20 million bail yet he attracted little or no attention from the law until he was past 60. "He is in the tradition of Meyer Lansky," said a source familiar with Kaplan's activities in a reference to the late Jewish mob kingpin. "A modest guy, not flashy, up from the streets, very smart, smarter than the Mafia guys he was with, and very, very loyal," said the source. To a point. Nearly a year ago, Kaplan, jailed since 1997 on tax fraud and marijuana smuggling convictions and facing 19 more years in prison, began negotiating with prosecutors to tell what he knows about the two NYPD detectives who allegedly were secretly on the payroll of the Luchese crime family. The two detectives, now retired, allegedly committed murders for the mob and also provided information to an underboss in the Luchese organization. And on March 11, the ex-detectives, Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, were arrested in Las Vegas and charged with participating in at least eight murders on behalf of the Mafia beginning in the mid-'80s. As the go-between, Kaplan was an eyewitness to alleged dirty work by Eppolito and Caracappa, as well as their paymaster, providing them with $4,000 a month in cash. To protect his life, Kaplan has been moved to a series of federal prisons, including facilities in West Virginia and the New York City metropolitan area. His family also is under federal protection. Meanwhile, Kaplan's decision to become a cooperating witness came about because he was betrayed by his best friend in the mob, Anthony (Gaspipe) Casso, a Luchese family underboss ... Kaplan's major earnings came from the marijuana trade. Court documents filed by prosecutors state that Kaplan was importing between 4,000 and 5,300 pounds at a time from Juarez, Mexico, into Texas in produce trucks, Winnebagos and cars. Kaplan insulated himself carefully, seldom personally meeting with growers, transporters and buyers in the United States. In wiretapped telephone conversations, Kaplan was always referred to as "The Old Man." He paid his workers well, sometimes as much as $20,000 a trip."

Wolfowitz Says He Won't Impose U.S. Agenda on World Bank,
By Carol Giacomo and Lesley Wroughton, Yahoo! News, March 19, 2005
"After helping lead the United States to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, Paul Wolfowitz is fighting a different kind of fight -- to secure approval as the next World Bank president by portraying himself as a consensus builder. From his spacious but cluttered office, the Pentagon's No. 2 official this week waged a campaign to ease fears in Europe and elsewhere that he would change policies at the bank to reflect the conservative Bush administration's foreign and social priorities. Wolfowitz telephoned U2 rock star-turned-debt relief advocate Bono, a potentially key ally; cheerfully endured interviews by major media, especially those with European audiences; and courted key finance and political officials from around the world. His message was clear as he sought to win the hearts and minds of a new, more global constituency: He is more multidimensional than his hard-line, conservative image as deputy defense secretary suggests ... "You do the job you have in front of you," he told Reuters in an interview late on Friday. He was explaining how he would segue to his new role from his Bush administration duties of combating terrorism, remaking the military and asserting American power to promote democracy, especially in the Middle East. "I am not going to impose the U.S. agenda on the bank," he said. "I am ready to listen." APPROVAL LIKELY Although his candidacy is controversial, Wolfowitz's approval by the bank's board, which operates by consensus, is likely a foregone conclusion. The United States has the largest voting share on the 24-member board, which represents the 184 member states, and traditionally nominates the bank president ... Wolfowitz, who has spent 24 years in government under six U.S. presidents, had hoped for a promotion in President Bush's second term. But one by one, top jobs like secretary of state, national security adviser and CIA director went to others. Congressional sources predicted that because of Iraq, Wolfowitz might find it impossible to win Senate approval for jobs requiring confirmation, like secretary of state. Critics blame him for pushing America into war with Iraq on the basis of inaccurate intelligence about weapons of mass destruction and sending troops into battle without sufficient plans for what would happen once the shooting stopped."

This Is Why Candor Is Rare in Hollywood,
by Rachel Abramowitz and Meg James, Los Angeles Times, March 19, 2005
"It's the first rule for talent agents: Aim the spotlight on your clients, not yourself. David Wirtschafter, president of William Morris Agency, learned that lesson the hard way this week, after an 11,000-word profile of him in the New Yorker prompted two actress clients to quit and set off a wave of gleeful nitpicking among his rivals. First to depart was Sarah Michelle Gellar, she of TV's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" fame. Apparently angry over Wirtschafter's description of her as being "nothing at all" before the horror movie "The Grudge," Gellar ditched the agency Tuesday. Then on Thursday, Oscar winner Halle Berry — whose career, according to the article, needed "burnishing" after the bomb "Catwoman"— dismissed the agency as well. By Friday, seemingly everyone in Hollywood had a copy of an apologetic e-mail Wirtschafter sent late Thursday announcing Berry's departure to his William Morris colleagues. "As you know, I am the subject of a story in the New Yorker that has caused some problems," he wrote. "I had personal reasons for doing the article and I recognize that these became blurred with my professional life. "I never intended to harm any of our colleagues or our clients by participating in this story," he continued. "While I can elaborate on the fine points of how I was portrayed and what I said, I did participate in this and want to apologize for any hurt that has stemmed from it." At the top agencies around town that compete with William Morris, meanwhile, there was gloating all around. One agent at a rival agency, asked by e-mail whether he was pursuing the "Catwoman" star, answered simply, "Meow!!" ... New Yorker staff writer Tad Friend first approached the notoriously press-shy agent nearly two years ago, and eventually persuaded him to provide broad access. Among other things, Friend spent more than two weeks in the William Morris offices. The resulting article paints the agency as vital and aggressive, despite its sometimes fuddy-duddy reputation. Wirtschafter describes that perception in the piece: "In the minds of our competitors, we're still a lot of old Jews dropping dead in our offices." The article also contains what, in the world of talent representation at least, passes for a bombshell. Wirtschafter is quoted calling one client — the singer Alicia Keys — "my favorite." For agents, who spend much of their time nursing the huge-but-frail egos of A-list stars, such declarations are a no-no. "Relationships with clients are the hardest to define, and they can be the most perishable," said an agent at another firm ... The New Yorker article comes just three months after an executive shuffle at William Morris that saw Wirtschafter promoted to president and led to the exodus of three powerful longtime agents: Sam Haskell, the agency's TV chief; Richard Rosenberg, who built the company's successful music and concert division; and Chief Operating Officer Steve Kram, who helped push the agency's international initiatives. The three had clashed with Chief Executive Jim Wiatt [Jewish?] over priorities and management style ... Another colleague agreed. "This is a business that's notorious for liars. And here you have a guy whose biggest fault is that he was honest. He's being crucified for telling the truth."

Will Saddam Hussein be overthrown? Where is Osama bin Laden hiding? For answers, see the Good Book,
by Ron Csillag, Religion News (from National Post), March 31, 2003
"Among the hundreds of meetings and briefings that took place in the Pentagons bowels in the months leading up to Operation Iraqi Freedom, one earned the fleeting disdain of The New York Times, whose columnist, Bill Keller, sniffed that "several man-hours of valuable intelligence-crunching time" had been "consumed [by a writer] who claims -- I am not making this up -- that messages encoded in the Hebrew text of the Old Testament provide clues to the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden. "Maybe were all a little too desperate these days for a simple formula to explain how our safe world came unhinged," Keller said. The gathering, which reportedly took place Feb. 21, was said to have been convened by Paul Wolfowitz, the hawkish U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defence, and attended by 10 top military intelligence officials, including Vice Admiral Lowell "Jake" Jacoby, director of the massive Defense Intelligence Agency, and Wolfowitz's deputy, Linton Wells, who is in charge of the Pentagon's nerve centre, known as 3CI (Command, Control, Communications). On the eve of war, the military brass listened intently for a full hour as Michael Drosnin expounded on his two brisk-selling volumes on the Bible code. Drosnin argues the Hebrew Torah -- the first five books of the Old Testament -- were intentionally encrypted, by a higher power, with prophetic warnings that have accurately predicted the Great Depression, the Second World War, the Kennedy assassinations, the moon landing, Watergate, and 9/11 -- and foretell the fall of Saddam Hussein and the precise location of bin Laden. The Americans "took it very seriously," Drosnin says. "They're practical people and I wanted to give them something of practical use." As a result of the meeting, Drosnin says U.S. and Israeli intelligence forces are hot on bin Laden's trail in that very place the Bible mentions, "right as we speak." Of course, he would not divulge where that place is ... Drosnin is a secular Jew, a former police reporter for the Washington Post and former writer for The Wall Street Journal. To be sure, his books, The Bible Code (1997) and last year's sequel, Bible Code II: The Countdown have been used by various fundamentalists, prophets of doom and supermarket tabloids as sure signs the Good Book knows all and that the end is nigh. Detractors point out the code violates the Bible's own ban on soothsaying. Drosnin himself says he did not fully believe the code's power until Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was murdered in November, 1995. Having learned Hebrew and the computer program that searches for hidden words, he found "Yitzhak Rabin" intersected with the letters that formed "assassin that will assassinate." Drosnin says he warned the doomed leader in a letter in September, 1994, that the Bible predicted he would be assassinated during that Jewish calendar year. After the killing, the word "Amir" was found as part of the same grid (Rabin's killer was Yigal Amir.) Drosnin remembers his reaction: "Oh my God. It's real." ... [T]he true breakthrough came in the early 1990s by a team of Israeli mathematicians led by Eliyahu Rips, an expert in group theory, a field that underlies quantum physics. Using a computer, Rips converted the Bible into a string of 304,805 Hebrew letters, minus spaces, and looked for names of great Jewish sages in close proximity to their birth and death dates. He was astonished to find many matches, and calculated the probability of finding his results by random at one in 10 million. His paper, entitled Equidistant Letter Sequencing in the Book of Genesis, was published in the journal Statistical Science in 1994. The math in the thrice-refereed work was pronounced ironclad. The coup-de-grace, as it were, came when Harold Gans the United States top cryptologist at the U.S. Defence Department set out to disprove Rips work and ended up corroborating it."
Boris Berezovsky promises to solve high-profile political crimes in Ukraine. He is reported to have promised his full support to Kiev in terms of the ongoing investigation of the "high-profile political crimes" in Ukraine,
Pravda (Russia), March 19, 2005
"Former Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky has been talking at great length about Ukraine for the last two or three months. One can get an impression that Mr. Berezovsky (otherwise called Platon Elenin as it is written in his foreign passport he already used for traveling to Latvia and Georgia) spends lonely sleepless nights thinking over the best way to help the Ukrainian authorities. He is reported to have promised his full support to Kiev in terms of the ongoing investigation of the "high-profile political crimes" in Ukraine. Speaking to the BBC Ukrainian service, Mr. Berezovsky said that he intended to set up a Ukrainian branch of his Fund for Civil Freedoms that he founded in 2001. The fund's head office is based in New York, there is also a branch in Latvia. "Apart from its other objectives, the fund will provide support to the investigation of crimes relating to the activities of the former regime," said he ... The magnate presently living in exile in the U.K. has loads of stories to tell, no doubt about it. He could shed light not only on the Gongadze case, but on many other "cases" as well. It's a pity that he is not keen to share his secrets with the Russian General Prosecutor's office, for a start. Mr. Berezovsky is wanted in Russia for economic crimes including fraud and embezzlement. It is quite funny to hear him saying about "the perpetrators who should be brought to justice." Undoubtedly, Moscow will express its disappointment should the Ukrainian authorities issue a visa to Mr. Berezovsky, especially if it happens on the eve or during the state visit of Mr. Putin to Ukraine. Moreover, Mr. Berezovsky has a knack for turning fishy anything he lays his hands on. At the end of the day, it will be up to Mr. Yushchenko to decide if he really needs such an "ally" around."

Top Billionaire Art Collectors,
by Anthony Haden-Guest, Forbes, March 9, 2005
"The worlds of art and money have always been intertwined; each basking in the other's reflected luster. Today's billionaires are no different from the grand dukes and popes of the Renaissance or the merchants of 17th century Amsterdam. They buy art to appreciate it, to learn from it and to profit from it ... But who are these modern Medicis? Today's collectors come in all shapes, after all, as well as sizes, and while extremely rich not all are billionaires. There are those who buy iconic art, cocooned in privacy, like publisher S.I. Newhouse and hedge fund king Steven A. Cohen, and there are those who buy publicly, and in bulk, hoping to shape the landscape and move markets, as non-billionaire, British ad man Charles Saatchi did, and still does, in the U.K. There are those whose tastes mold institutions, like cosmetics heir Ronald Lauder, who bought his first drawing, a work by Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele, with money from his bar mitzvah and went on to fund and found the Neue Galerie New York to showcase German and Austrian art. Agnes Gund, whose family fell off the Forbes list of the 400 Richest Americans in 2000, served for over ten years as president of the Museum of Modern Art. Barnes & Noble founder and chairman Leonard Riggio, although also not a billionaire, is a champion of minimalist art and activist chairman of one of the great enablers of contemporary art, the DIA foundation. Some billionaires make their own collections available to the interested, such as home building and insurance tycoon Eli Broad's Broad Art Foundation in Santa Monica, Calif., and, when it is completed in 2006, French retail giant Pinault-Printemps-Redoute's Francois Pinault's contemporary art foundation outside Paris ... We have determined those billionaires for our list by playing by the rules of the international art market. Thus the individuals on whom we focus are those who collect with consistency, boundless appetites and the necessary billions to satisfy them. Fact: We have been living through an astounding boom--one that far surpasses its predecessor of the later 1980s. As with the 80s, much of the market is being made by the New Money. Indeed, many figures from that period remain active, like LBO master Henry Kravis and Gap chairman Donald Fisher."
[Yet another Jewish Russian mogul thief/tribal dual loyalist drains Russia, moves to Israel, can't stand Israelis, and then moves back to Russia. The post-communist Jewish destruction of Russia, here. Why Gaydamak left Israel back for Russia, here.]
Me? An oligarch?,
by Yossi Melman, Haaretz (Israel), March 18, 2005
"The name of Russian-Israeli businessman Arcadi Gaydamak surfaced last week as the huge money-laundering scandal broke at Bank Hapoalim. In an interview with Haaretz, Gaydamak insists that he has nothing to do with it. Or with any of the other allegations - illegal arms dealing, corruption, bribery, tax evasion and more - swirling around him and his meteoric rise from stevedore to billionaire. The first time it happened to Arcadi Gaydamak was in 1994. On that occasion, after he found his name in the press, he didn't sleep for a week, he says. Since then, though, he's become used to it and sleeps soundly. That first time was when the French media wondered how he made his fortune, called him an "arms dealer" and described extensively his mediation in arms deals between Russia and Angola. Since then, the name of the Jewish-Russian-French-Israeli billionaire has cropped up countless times in the world media, usually in unflattering contexts that smack of international schemes, bribe payments, fat trade commissions and various other forms of corruption. By now, one would think, this would be routine for Gaydamak - but in fact, every new mention rankles him. The latest event," as he puts it, is the appearance of his name in the list of Russian oligarchs supposedly to be questioned by the Israel Police in connection with the money laundering affair at a Tel Aviv branch of Bank Hapoalim, Israel's largest bank ... The interview was conducted in English in the spacious living room of Gaydamak's central Moscow apartment. He bought it cheaply 10 years ago; its current value, in the wild real estate market of Moscow, is more than $1 million ... As someone used to giving orders, he asked to be photographed in several poses: next to the certificates of esteem and the medals he received from the French government for his services; proudly holding art books he has written about Imperial furniture and about bronze vessels in Russia; and with another certificate of appreciation, this one for "the most generous donor of the year," which he was awarded by a Jewish organization in Russia. Gaydamak has a fixed daily routine. He gets up at 6 and does kung-fu exercises in his apartment - or outside, if the weather permits. He then washes and puts on tefillin (phylacteries), even though he is not religiously observant. Does he do this under the influence of his friend and business partner, the Chabad disciple and diamond merchant Lev Leviev? "No," he replies. "I started to put on tefillin even before I met Leviev. I have been doing it since 1995, since the bar mitzvah of my son Sasha in Paris." All three of his children have drawn close to Judaism; the two daughters observe Shabbat ... He drives. He has a chauffeur and bodyguards, "but I don't always avail myself of them," he says. "I know from my martial arts exercises that you can kill someone in a second. If they want to liquidate you they will send professionals and then no security or protection will help me. You should know that most businessmen in Russia use bodyguards and security staff and escort vehicles more to make an impression than to protect their lives. It's a status symbol. Sometimes you can't get into a restaurant or a club in Moscow without bodyguards. The security guards at the door simply treat you rudely and throw you out." ... I ask Gaydamak what he thinks about the comparison that is being drawn between the nouveaux riches in Russia, the "oligarchs," and the "robber barons" - the 19th century capitalist entrepreneurs in the U.S., such as Rockefeller, Morgan or Vanderbilt, who exploited business opportunities while bypassing the law and made fortunes. A generation or two later, their descendants were considered honest tycoons and exerted powerful influence in the economy, society and politics ... Still, it's difficult to understand how the Russian economy generated so much money that is owned by so few people in such a short time. On the list of the world's richest billionaires, published this week by Forbes, Russia is in second place after the United States. The collective net worth of Russia's 27 wealthiest individuals is estimated to be $90 billion. Many are Jews. Missing from this year's list of the super-rich are the owners of the oil and gas giant Yukos, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who is in jail, and Leonid Nevzlin, Vladimir Dubov and Mikhail Brudno, all of whom found shelter in Israel. Arcadi Gaydamdak is also not on the list. According to the Israeli financial magazine The Marker (part of the Haaretz Group), Gaydamak is worth $800 million, but according to people who worked with him or are familiar with his globe-spanning businesses, he may be worth two or three times that amount ... During the Soviet era, Gaydamak explains, "the Soviet businessmen - that is, the Soviet state - always honored business contracts and agreements. The West liked doing business with them. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia, which arose in its place, found itself without any capabilities. That was the time for entrepreneurs like me. Today we are blamed for taking over businesses, but we actually saved them ... I have a chemical factory in Kazakhstan. It had 1,800 employees, and together with subcontractors and family members, it actually provides a living for a community of about 5,000 people. When I bought the factory, we paid salaries in cash every three days. That was the custom in the Soviet Union - the workers didn't know what bank accounts were ... Those were the circumstances that turned Russia into a capitalist market and a market economy. We paid the state what circumstances forced it to accept. Even the Talmud says that our forefathers bought the ownership of the land in the Land of Israel. They did not receive or take it for nothing. We were in the right place at the right time. It is possible and permissible to criticize us, but it has to be understood that we bought the means of production. These days the legal framework is already in place and there are no more business opportunities like there were in the past. The state is working to collect taxes and to distribute the wealth with the rest of the population." Why, nevertheless, is your name being mentioned in connection with the money laundering investigation at the Hayarkon branch of Bank Hapoalim in Tel Aviv? "I really don't know. Maybe because I had a small account there. At the beginning of 2004 I deposited about $9,000 and at the end of the year I had an overdraft of $10,300." He shows me the bank statements. "The money was withdrawn via my credit card and used for expenses such as fuel and restaurants in Israel. That is not money-laundering and it is not a violation of the law."Can you think of any other reason for your name to be mentioned? Maybe the police don't like you? "I really don't know what I did to the Israeli police. Why shouldn't they like me? What did I ever do to them? I hope they aren't anti-Semitic," he says sarcastically "... An Israeli businessman sued me for a debt I supposedly owed him from a transaction in Kazakhstan. His claim was an invention, he simply tried to blackmail me, but in the early stage the court granted his request and put a temporary freeze on my business affairs. Arcadi Gaydamak was born in 1952 in Moscow. His father was a hospital administrator and his mother a worker in a food distribution company. In 1972, he joined the first trickle of immigrants to Israel from the Soviet Union. The new immigrants were at the center of public attention and Gaydamak got to meet with prime minister Golda Meir twice. "I was an idealist and I was lazy," he says, and so he chose to live on a kibbutz - Beit Hashita, in the Beit She'an Valley. His idealism quickly wore off when he realized (as he said in an interview with Haaretz three years ago) that "the kibbutz is a normal place which is no different from anywhere else and has social aggression. I noticed that those who were close to the bosses got the best and most comfortable work, like driving a tractor. I was sent to the orchard and to the night shift in the chicken coop." Kibbutz life brought back memories of the Soviet Union, so he moved to Haifa, where he worked as a stevedore. He didn't always have a roof over his head and spent some nights on the Acre beach. Afterward he became a sailor on a Zim company oil tanker that flew the Liberian flag of convenience.
About a year ago Gaydamak held negotiations to purchase The Israel Corporation holding company, including Zim Lines. The deal would have been an historical irony for him, but it didn't pan out ... The start of his fortune, he says, were a few real estate deals he chanced across. He bought apartments cheaply, renovated them and sold them for high prices ... From 1992 to 1995, Falcone and Gaydamak were involved in financing arms deals worth more than half a billion dollars, including war planes, tanks, missiles, artillery and munitions. In the wake of these deals, in December 2000, the French government opened a criminal investigation against Falcone, Gaydamak, Jean-Christophe Mitterrand and others, accusing them of illegally trading in arms. The French media dubbed the affair "Angolagate." ... The French investigative judge accused Gaydamak on two additional counts: corruption and tax offenses. The judge issued an international arrest warrant against him, which is still in force. Gaydamak, who was then in London, did not dare return to France. For him, loving Paris as he does, it was like being expelled from paradise. It was only then, because of the new circumstances, that he remembered Israel again and moved there in 1998. He even took the Hebrew name of Arye Bar-Lev ... Gaydamak also has an explanation, in the form of another juicy story, for his tax evasion problems. At the request of the director of the Louvre, he says, who knew he was an art lover, he donated $4 million to purchase antique furniture from the period of 16th century King Francois I. When the tax authorities learned of the donation, he says, they claimed it represented 10 percent of his undeclared capital and accused him of tax evasion ... In fact, your move to Israel in 1998 was by default, was it not? "It is true that I loved Paris and felt at home there. But Israel is my home. I am a Jew and an Israeli. My son Sasha served in the IDF. He was a sniper. I have a reserve duty card and a dog tag. I am ready to do reserve duty at any time. I have houses in Israel. When I arrived in Israel I paid tens of millions of shekels to income tax, even though I did not do business in Israel. I don't want to boast, only to explain so people will not think badly of me. So, even though I believe in giving charity secretly, I also want to say that I have donated quite a bit to organizations in Israel: $1 million to the victims of the terrorist attack at the Dolphinarium, $1 million to Beit Hahayal in Mitzpeh Ramon, $2.5 million to Magen David Adom, $3 million to the trauma center at Sheba Medical Center and much more to schools, synagogues and other organizations whose names and how much I gave I don't remember at the moment. What else can be expected of me?" ... You said that except for Angola, you have never dealt in arms, but you established a company for the export of defense materials with former Mossad chief Danny Yatom. "I wanted to consolidate myself in Israel. Yatom and another member of the Mossad, who was in the company, are respected people, and I thought that with their help I would advance myself, but in the end the company did not engage in any activity. It did not succeed, so we closed it down four years ago" ... Still, you have recently moved back to Russia. "There are things in Israel that I find hard to accept. In a word, it is the chutzpah. When I drive on the road, when I go to a restaurant, I encounter chutzpah, discourtesy. I have encountered dishonest businessmen. Those things have made it hard for me. But then I tell myself that Israel is the only country where I can live freely."

Your Plaza suite is ready — to be a condo,
by Paul Lieberman, The Seattle Times (from Los Angeles Times), March 18, 2005
"NEW YORK — When The Plaza hotel opened in 1907, the cheapest rooms went for $2.50 a night, $4 with a bath, and some suites cost an astounding $25. But the steep prices seemed justified, given the location at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, next to the mansion of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, and what it had cost to build the castlelike hotel with the stunning chandeliers: $12.5 million. Nearly 100 years later, that's about what it will take to get in the door once most of the rooms at the hotel are converted into condos."I'm not saying I won't have a couple buyers at $20 million to $40 million, but the majority will be $5 million to $10 million," said Mike Naftali, president of Elad Properties, which is shutting the famous hotel April 30 to begin the $350 million conversion ... The Plaza has been a setting for scenes in books and movies such as "The Great Gatsby" and "Eloise at the Plaza." But to the 25,000-member union — which has lost 1,076 jobs to condo conversions in the past year — its significance is as the site of an additional 900 precarious jobs, many of which pay sums people beyond the Manhattan hotel scene might find hard to believe ... "They feel that this was a place they would be able to stay and retire," Cooley said of his co-workers, who know it will be hard to find jobs at their current pay. The flip side of that is the contention by the Israeli development company that bought The Plaza last year for $675 million — about $838,000 a room — that such labor costs make it unfeasible to maintain the place as a 805-room hotel. Elad Properties is planning to have a 150-room hotel when The Plaza reopens at the end of 2006, and those rooms will be along East 58th Street, not on the choice park-view side. Naftali said the downsized hotel would operate with about 150 employees. Current workers have been offered two weeks' severance pay for each year of service. The hotel union is trying to pressure Naftali's group to scale back on the number of condos ... But in the current real-estate market, Naftali sees no end to the condo conversions. "Every rich person in the world," he insisted, "will consider The Plaza as one of the places they want to own an apartment." ... Every U.S. president since William Taft has made at least one visit to The Plaza. Not to mention a parade of kings and queens and a galaxy of cultural stars from Mark Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald to the Beatles and architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who kept a suite there during the construction of his Guggenheim Museum."

Hotel Hell. Plaza's planned conversion to condominiums would mean hard times for Irish workers,
by Jill Sheehy, Irish Echo, March 16-22, 2005
"As the saying goes, "Nothing unimportant ever happens at the Plaza." The scene of countless movies, books and memories, the 98-year-old luxury hotel in Manhattan was sold last year to the El-Ad Group for $675 million. Employees and supporters are now fighting the subsequent announcement that most of the hotel rooms will be converted into condominiums and retail space. The New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council said that 1,100 porters, cooks, chambermaids and doormen have already received notice that they will longer have a job "on or around" April 30 of this year, and among those affected will be the Irish and Irish Americans who work, stay and play in the area. The union, which represents workers throughout the city's hospitality industry, has launched a campaign as well as a Web site, www.savethepaza.com, where people can pledge their support, leave messages about their experiences at the hotel, and wish them well wit their plight. Though the announcement of the hotel's closure came last week, the union is continuing to drum up support from local political figures and celebrities. Taking up almost an entire city block, the hotel's location across from Central Park, between Central Park South and 58th Street on Fifth Avenue, has long been a draw for the hotel. "We're continuing the campaign to save the hotel," said John Turchiano of the N.Y. Hotel and Motel Trades Council ... Designated a New York City Landmark in 1969, the Plaza is the only New York City hotel to be designated as a National Historic Landmark. This will preserve the building's outer shell, but the interior was never designated a landmark. In response to that, the union recently applied to landmark the interior to prevent any construction from taking place ... The Irish have long been both an integral part of the city's hospitality industry as well as a powerful tourist group. Many Irish tourists have been on shopping junkets and vacations to New York to take advantage of the falling dollar, and the loss of hotel rooms worries some. The area surrounding the Plaza is laden with tourist-heavy strips and landmark stores, all within reach of a strong euro. Pierce noted that the Plaza has always been a favorite of Irish and Scottish guests, and he expects to see a marked increase in Irish tourists in the coming weeks, due to the St. Patrick's Day holiday. Thomas Quinn, a horse-drawn carriage driver who was stationed across from the Plaza that same Monday, expects to see his business hurt by the hotel's closure as well ... Like many decisions in New York City real estate, the conversion is fueled by money. El-Ad Group has said it is trying to stop the loss of money the hotel has been suffering for years. Turchiano rejects those claims, saying that last year the Plaza made more money than in any year in recent memory. "They had an 86 percent occupancy last year," he said. "You're making money at that rate." The man whose job it is to handle the work is Miki Naftali, the public face of El-Ad Group, though the owner is a press-shy Israeli businessman named Yitzhak Tshuva. Calls to El-Ad were not returned by press time. Named one of the most influential men in Israel, Tshuva has made his fortune in oil investments and also counts real estate and convenience stores as part of the El-Ad Group. "We have met with El-Ad and will continue to meet with El-Ad," Turchiano said. "They're the owners and they can do what they want, but a lot may be decided in the court of public opinion." "You can't duplicate the Plaza, he said. "No one besides El-Ad is behind this." Local 6, the union that the New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council falls under, has been in place since 1938 and has long been tied to Irish America, though newer members reflect a changing immigration pattern. "The history of our union is the history of immigration," Turchiano said. "We certainly have a lot of Irish-American members," he said, adding that many retirees are immigrants."
Israeli company launches $300-million real estate project,
by Janice Arnold, Canadian Jewish News, March 17, 2005
"The intersection of Thimens and Cavendish Boulevards at the outer edge of developed Ville St. Laurent is dominated by anonymous high-rises and strip malls. But Israeli real estate developer Jacob Engel can look to the time when this will, he hopes, be one of the most desirable addresses in the Montreal area Engel is founder and president of the Engel Group, which began 30 years ago as a modest contracting firm and has grown into one of Israel’s largest real estate companies. He was in Montreal last week to inaugurate three luxury condominium projects, with a total of 1,000 units. Together, they represent an investment expected to reach $300 million, the company says. The New York-based investment bank Lehman Brothers is a 50 per cent partner. Engel believes that currently, Montreal is the best place in North America to invest in real estate, even though prices have risen sharply and some think the condo market is reaching saturation ... The jewel in Engel’s crown, though, is Le Chagall, which will be built in Cote St. Luc. The twin 17-storey towers will be the tallest structures in the area. The top four floors will be penthouses, constructed in a pyramid shape to afford the best views. The latter is being marketed specifically to the Jewish community and may have such features as double-sink kitchens and Shabbat elevators, if the demand is sufficient, said Engel ... The Engel Group has already invested about $100,000 million in Montreal- area commercial properties since the end of 2001. Its holdings include the Montenach Mall in South Shore Beloeil, the big-box Rona store on Cote Vertu Boulevard, and two office buildings on Ste. Catherine Street. Engel, a Technion mechanical engineering graduate, said the company plans to spend another $200 million building condos in Montreal over the next few years, but has not decided on the locations. This is Engel’s first foray into North America. In Israel, the Herzliya-based company has developed industrial, commercial and residential properties throughout the country ... In the last few years, Engel has branched out internationally, and has residential and commercial real estate in Prague, Budapest and Warsaw, and an office in Belgrade. The general manager for Canada, Oded Fainaro, is based in Boston, but says he is in Montreal every week."
Australian billionaire to plow NIS 62.5m into kibbutz firm,

"Australian billionaire John Gandel's first business investment in Israel will be with a kibbutz. Gandel will invest NIS 62.5 million in Kibbutz Gvat members' Gvat Assets in return for half of the company ... Gandel, a Jewish real estate tycoon, was ranked fifth in a Forbes magazine list of Australia's and New Zealand's wealthiest citizens. The magazine estimated his fortune at $1.1 billion. A few years ago, Gandel built himself a $30-million estate in Melbourne's most exclusive neighborhood, Allenby Road, for which he was sharply criticized. Gandel Retail Management, the result of Australia's largest-ever real estate merger between the former Gandel Retail Trust and Colonial First State Property Group, buys and develops luxury malls, and is publicly traded in Australia. Until now, Gandel's connection to Israel has been limited to philanthropy. He was involved in the "Computer for Every Child" project and is a donor to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum."
Canadian billionaire Schwartz mulls major Israeli investment. Gerald (Gerry) W. Schwartz, who will visit Israel in May, is considering joint investments with Israel Aircraft Industries,
by Dafna Zucker, Globes (Israel), February 28, 2005
"Canadian-Jewish billionaire Gerald (Gerry) W. Schwartz is planning a visit to Israel in May in order to consider what his confidants in Israel refer to as a “huge investment.” Schwartz is considering making an offer to acquire the state’s holdings in Bank Leumi and various investments in cooperation with Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI). Considered the wealthiest Jew in Canada, Schwartz is associated with both banking and the aerospace industry. Six months ago, he submitted his candidacy for the acquisition of Israel Discount Bank, and deposited a $10 million bank guarantee with the Ministry of Finance. He was the first to withdraw from the tender, shortly after it began. His holdings include primarily financial institutions, which under the tender rules could constitute only 25% of the controlling interest in the consortium. The Daniel Strauss consortium withdrew from the tender in the final stages for the same reason, leaving the Matthew Bronfman consortium as the sole bidder. The Bronfman consortium eventually acquired Discount Bank ... Schwartz also intends to launch two major philanthropic projects during his May visit. Schwartz has never had any business activity in Israel; his participation in the Discount Bank tender was his first step in this direction. He now plans to make substantial investments in Israel."

"Cassava Enterprises (Gibraltar) Ltd., owned by Ari and Aharon Shaked and Shai and Ron Ben Yitzhak, is heading for the stock market. "The Financial Times" reported yesterday that Cassava, of the world's biggest Internet gambling companies, has hired Credit Suisse First Boston to prepare a flotation of 888.com, valuing its online poker room at up to $1.6 billion (£836 million). The flotation is expected in the second half of the year.Cassava, registered in Gibraltar, is headed by John Anderson. Cassava's parent company, VHL, is also registered in Gibraltar. Cassava's best-known brand in 888.com. It has three other gaming sites: Betmate UK, Casino-on-Net and Pacific Poker. The sites are barred to Israeli surfers, as part of a strategic decision by Cassava, due to legal uncertainty in Israel regarding gambling ... The flotation of the company will naturally force Cassava to disclose its figures to the public. The company's annual turnover has reportedly exceeded the $1 billion threshold, and its profits are estimated at $200-300 million. A gaming license from Antigua The Shaked and Ben Yitzhak brothers founded VHL seven years ago, after Aharon Shaked, a dentist by training, was attending a dentists convention in Monte Carlo. He told his brother, Avi, an engineer, about his idea of founding an online gaming company. Avi knew the Ben Yitzhak brothers. After formulating the set-up plan, the four men took out loans, bought a gaming license in Antigua for $100,000, and set up the company. The Shaked brothers, originally from Netanya, have other businesses in Israel and overseas, including the family real estate company, Yosef Shaked and Sons, which barely operates any more, a technology company in the US, and biotechnology companies in Israel. Shai Ben Yitzhak, a software engineer by training, developed the technology platform used by the online casinos. In 1998, he, his brother Ron, and the Shaked brothers, founded Random Logic Ltd. , based in Beit Lowenstein in Tel Aviv. Random Logic has developed interactive computer software for Internet gaming, and other online platforms. This software is the foundation for Cassava's online gaming sites."

Shaya Boymelgreen to build hotel in Bruce Ratner New York project. Boymelgreen is a regular partner of Africa Israel Investments in US real estate project,
By Ron Klein, Globes (Israel), March 9, 2005
"The New York “Daily News” recently reported that Shaya Boymelgreen was planning to build a hotel in the center of the $2.5 billion Brooklyn Atlantic Yards project being constructed by US real estate tycoon Bruce Ratner. Boymelgreen, a Jewish-American, has been the regular partner of Africa-Israel Investments and its controlling shareholder, Lev Leviev, in US real estate projects since 2002 ...Near the site of the planned hotel, Boymelgreen is also cooperating with Henry Weinstein in the conversion of an existing 85,000-square foot building and a vacant lot in the neighborhood into an office and residential complex. These two buildings are slated for construction in the compound where Ratner plans to build seventeen residential and office high-rises, plus a 19,000-seat luxury basketball arena for the New Jersey Nets team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Ratner is planning his project on a 21-acre site, which includes the Long Island railroad yards. Although he has purchased a large proportion of the joint apartments and buildings project on the site of the planned Atlantic Yards, Ratner also needs approval from the local authorities to unfreeze a number of plots in the region for the planned development. Ratner bought the New Jersey Nets last year for $300 million, and plans to move the team to the new arena to be constructed in Atlantic Yards. Bulldozers are scheduled to go into action on the site in 2006, but Ratner is still waiting for a few permits from the municipal and state authorities. Ratner has said that he would allocate 4,500 units in the project to rental housing, and half of the planned 375 apartments to low-cost housing. Development activity by the Africa Israel-Boymelgreen partnership differs from almost all other Israeli overseas real estate investors. The partners initiate construction, while most other Israeli investors concentrate on buying existing properties as income-producing properties. Boymelgreen and Leviev have built over 2,200 apartments in high-demand areas of New York City, at an estimated cost of at least $1.3 billion."
[The essence of the Jewish accusation of "anti-Semitism" is this: if you have the insight and courage to say that verifiable Jewish racism, apartheid, tribalism, ethnocentrism, arrogance, wealth, power, exploitation, corrupttion, manipulation, etc. etc. etc. cause "anti-Semitism," you are thereby -- by Jewish totalitarian definition -- an "anti-Semite."]
Anti-Semitism on the rise in Canada,
by Sam Ser, Jerusalem Post, March 17, 2005
"We are raising the red flag to warn the government and the community that we are following very much in the footsteps of Europe" in the scope of anti-Semitism, Frank Dimant, executive vice president of B'nai Brith Canada, told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday. "People are becoming more brazen... virtually at every level," he added. According to an annual report released by B'nai Brith Canada's League for Human Rights on Tuesday, anti-Semitism in Canada is at its worst point in more than two decades. A total of 857 incidents were reported in 2004, nearly 47 percent more than the previous year, according to the report. It also said that the number of incidents had increased more than three-fold since 2000. Dimant believes the real number of anti-Semitic incidents could be even 10 times higher, saying that the vast majority go unreported. While most of the incidents in 2004 were "merely" cases of harassment, the report noted that the greatest increases were registered in vandalism and violent attacks ... What's worse, he added, is that university authorities refused to admit they have a problem. "Some have told us, 'You have to expect a little bit of anti-Semitism,'" Dimant said. "But why? Why do we have to tolerate any anti-Semitism?" Dimant criticized the government for doing too little to combat the phenomenon." B'nai Brith has recommended to the government that it criminalize Holocaust denial and implement a zero-tolerance policy for anti-Semitism in public schools. A solution must be found soon, Dimant said, because "a whole generation of Canadians is growing up with a perverted view of what Jews are." [What's obviosuly needed? Criticize Jews, go to jail.]
Mayor Ken Livingstone, Blacks and Jews - A Black View,
Blacks and Jews
"London mayor Ken Livingstone ("Red Ken" to many of his progressive supporters) continues to fight for his political life against charges of antisemitism brought by England's Jewish community. They say he used inappropriate remarks against a Jewish reporter who was harassing him on the street.Mayor Ken thereby joins a distinguished list of prominent persons accused by the Jewish lobby of antisemitism over the last few years. They include Jesse Jackson, Marlon Brando,Michael Jackson,African American Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney of Georgia, Jewish MIT professor Noam Chomsky, Jewish writer Norman Finkelstein (author of The Holocaust Industry), Minister Louis Farrakhan (who was banned from speaking in Mayor Livingstone's own London town due to Jewish pressure), Palestinian scholar Edward Said, Al Sharpton, Israeli Israel Shahak (author of Jewish History, Jewish Religion), the late Stokely Carmichael/Kwame Ture, African American professor Len Jeffries, the Black Panther Party, former US Congressman Paul Findley, Cherokee Native American professor Ward Churchill of Colorado University, former New Jersey poet laureate Amiri Baraka and a host of African American, Arab American and progressive white American academics. The group is seemingly endless and a very distinguished bunch it is. All of them were critical of Israel, Zionism, the role of Jews in the African slave trade, the role of Jews in Hollywood, the commercialization of the holocaust industry, or some other issue that the Jewish lobby considered out of bounds for public scrutiny. Mayor Livingstone is in good company. He has so far taken a stand on principle, refusing to apologise. The mayor can't bring himself to emulate people like Jesse Jackson, who apologized profusely for decades, and Marlon Brando, who cried tears of contrition on the TV.A year ago, however, Livingstone faced similar pressure from England's Jewish lobby. His office had invited African American professor Tony Martin to address his African History Month conference. Professor Martin is one of the world's leading authorities on Pan-African history and was invited to speak on Marcus Garvey's career. The Jewish lobby commanded Mayor Livingstone to disinvite Professor Martin because, they argued, he had once spoken at the same conference with persons the Jewish lobby identified as "holocaust deniers." Louise Ellman, Jewish Labour Party MP for Liverpool wrote a letter to that effect to the mayor. Livingstone acted right away and deputed his black community spokesman, Lee Jasper, to issue the disinvitation. England's Black community was up in arms but then, as now, Livingstone refused to budge. The only difference is that on that occasion he was refusing to budge from his servile accommodation to the Jewish lobby. This time he is refusing to budge from his opposition to the Jewish lobby. Mayor Livingstone took quite a hit from the Black community for his stand on the Martin disinvitation. A wide array of London's Black groups got together and invited Professor Martin to speak anyway. Over a thousand people showed up and Livingstone and his black lieutenant Lee Jasper were denounced on Black radio stations, in public meetings and elsewhere. Jasper's suspected plans for a parliamentary career may have suffered a grave setback. It is likely that the power of the Black response took Livingstone by surprise, for this community was one he probably considered to be in his back pocket. Still, he felt that they were powerless enough to be sacrificed to the powerful Jewish lobby. He now speaks of Jewish exaggeration of so-called "antisemitism" and even accuses Israel of "ethnic cleansing" in Palestine (Hugh Mair article in the Guardian, 4 March 2005).If he believes all this now he probably did not believe the hyperbole generated around the demand to disinvite Professor Martin, who was not even accused of antisemitism, but only of having spoken at the same conference as "holocaust deniers." In throwing this black sop to the Jewish lobby Livingstone probably felt that the Jewish lobby would now owe him a favour while he would pay no political price in his hitherto overwhelmingly supportive Black community. But he was wrong. He was supping with the proverbial devil and his spoon was not long enough. The Jewish lobby has now turned on him with the same ferocity which they normally reserve for "holocaust deniers", "antisemites" and suchlike. The same Louise Ellman, MP, whose bidding he did one year ago, is now baying at his heels. She has called on the Greater London Council to reprimand him (Evening Standard, 11 Feb., 2005). The lobby actually wants Livingstone to be not only disinvited but actually unseated from office. They have taken Livingstone to the Standards Bureau of England, a curious body which actually has the power to expel an elected mayor from office -- something like an impeachment procedure in the United States. If Livingstone had taken a principled position one year ago on the Martin disinvitation, he might at least have been able to sleep comfortably now. As it is, he must be waking up nights kicking himself for not using a longer spoon when he supped with the proverbial devil."
[Blacks (like everyone else) are required to grovel on all fours for Israel to get Jewish goodie$:]
Israel proves stumbling block at dialogue with blacks, Jews,
by Johanna Ginsberg, New Jersey Jewish News, (2004?)
"Israel may be the wedge that drives blacks and Jews apart for good, if a debate at Rutgers School of Law in Newark between two prominent professors is any indication. Taking part in the March 31 debate — part of a “Blacks and Jews in Conversation” event sponsored by the school’s associations of black and Jewish law students — were Twila Perry, law professor at Rutgers Law School, and Murray Friedman, director of the Myer and Rosaline Feinstein Center for American Jewish History at Temple University. The panelists discussed the civil rights history that united the two communities and later developments that drove many on both sides apart. Although some of those rifts have been healed, Perry indicated that many in the African-American community are unable to provide the unequivocal support for Israel that many Jewish leaders demand. “If Israel is a litmus test, we’re in big trouble,” said Perry. “Why do I have to show my loyalty on this issue?” In response, Friedman said there is unanimity in the Jewish community on the issue of Israel, and that there would be no Jewish trust in the black community without support on that issue. Meanwhile, panelist Ellen Lambert, executive director of the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, tried to explain how the Holocaust, the creation of Israel, and terrorism directed at Israelis combined to create a “line” by which many Jews judge their friends and antagonists. “Here is my issue,” said Lambert, saying she was paraphrasing the feelings of many Jews. “Show me you’re loyal. Cross the line and take my side…. I must know you are in favor of Israel. Otherwise you are plotting my death.” “That would be a problem,” said Perry. As Lambert urged the parties to look beyond this specific issue “to talk about daily issues like hunger and health,” Friedman returned to the subject of Israel to say, “You don’t sense how frightened I am about my country and my people.” Perry responded, “Then we can’t have a conversation.” It was a tense moment in an event designed as the kickoff for a resurrection of the Association of Black Law Students and the Jewish Law Students Association. Developed at the urging of the Anti-Defamation League about 10 years ago, the groups’ programming tended to involve discussions with judges and lawyers before dissolving in 1999."

And, whenever life deals you a severe blow, always remind yourself: "Well, shucks. Put it in perspective. Look how bad the Jews who run our country always have it."

Holocaust survivor speaks in Childersburg,
by Evan Casey, Daily Home, March 19, 2005
"Max Steinmetz was only 18 when his parents and 6 year-old sister were murdered. He watched another man die for refusing to eat his bread. "They hung him with a sign that said ‘this is what happens when you disobey the German Army,’" he recounted. His brother Henry died in 1945 of starvation, only three months before Nazi prisoners were liberated. "These people were savages, not even animals," he said ... He is asked to speak for audiences around the state, and was even the honored guest of Birmingham Southern University’s opening play, "The Diary of Ann Frank" Wednesday."
Holocaust survivor ensures remembrance.Stone Bank students hear real-life experiences,
By LAWRENCE SILVER, Waukesha Freeman, March 16, 2005
"Two Nazi troops accused Howard Melton of sabotage after an airplane tire blew in World War II.The guards prepared to kill Melton, a Lithuanian Jew, before an airplane mechanic stopped them. The tire blew because of extensive heat."I could have died that day," Melton said in front of 100 enthralled Stone Bank students. "If that mechanic wasn’t there or came a few hours later I wouldn’t be here today." Stone Bank fifth- through eighth-graders heard the real-life experience of a Holocaust survivor Tuesday morning. Melton’s detailed story of four years of survival in German concentration camps and ghettos gave students a unique perspective of world history. "Stone Bank can be a very insular place, which can be a good thing," said Phil Gissen, a social studies teacher at Stone Bank. "I think it is important for these kids to know the world can be difficult for people in other parts of the world."
Holcaust survivor inspires students,
by Alison Waldman, Asbury Park Press, March 16, 2005
"One morning in May 1940, Maud Dahme said her family awakened in their hometown of Amersfoort, Netherlands, to find planes flying overhead and tanks and soldiers in the streets. While her country had declared itself neutral in the ongoing war plaguing the continent, the war had landed on its doorstep almost overnight. And from there the lives of Dahme and her family, who were Jewish, began to change, little by little. This is where the story of her family's survival began, a story the 69-year-old Flemington resident shared with upper-class students at the fourth-through-eighth-grade Forrestdale School in Rumson Tuesday as part of a two-day Holocaust studies program that brought speakers to the school ... The message Dahme, who is a member of the state Board of Education and the state Commission on Holocaust Education, wanted students to hear was the importance of accepting difference."
Holocaust speaker to be at RVMS April 15,
Redwood Gazette, March 18, 2005
"Finding people to talk about the Holocaust who actually survived it, is becoming more difficult as many of the survivors have since passed away. When one has the opportunity to hear the story from a firsthand eye witness, it is important, especially for those who have never heard it before to take advantage of their accounts. On April 15 at 9 a.m. Aaron Elster, himself a Holocaust survivor, is scheduled to talk in the PAC in Redwood Falls. Elster will address eighth graders enrolled at RVMS. The middle-school sponsored event is open to the public. Kristin Thompson, an eighth-grade RVMS social studies educator and Mandel Fellow of the U.S. Holocaust Museum, said that it is important to hear these stories firsthand while the public still can ... His message to audiences, especially children, is that they must believe that they are stronger and smarter than they think and that prejudice and ignorance can lead to another Holocaust."
Holocaust survivor encourages youngsters as he talks about the past,
by JENNIFER BRUMMETT, Advocate Messanger (Kentucky), March 13, 2005
"Abstract: Ernie Marx has a quick wit and a sharp sense of humor. That's apparent within a few moments of speaking to him. Marx said that aspect of his personality helped him get through being imprisoned in two concentration camps during World War II."
Quiet message of Holocaust survivor resonates decades later,
By Susan Harrison Wolffis, Muskegon Chronicle (Michigan), March 17, 2005
""Listen to a story," the old man said. He stood in front of an audience of at least 180 Wednesday night in Muskegon: one man, a microphone he forgot to use and an overhead projector as his only props. "Not just a story," he implored, "but an experience: my life." And with that simple invitation, Martin Lowenberg -- a 77-year-old survivor of Nazi concentration camps, slave labor camps and a four-day, 70-mile death march across Germany at the end of World War II -- began to speak. He started with a question for the ages. "How can people do that to others?" he asked. "It's hard to believe." ... Lowenberg, a retired hospital supplies salesman who lives in Southfield, speaks regularly at schools about his experiences on behalf of the Michigan Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills. His photograph is part of the "Portraits of Honor: Michigan Survivors" exhibit on display at the Muskegon County Museum through April. On Wednesday night, he spoke at an event hosted by the county museum at the Masonic Temple as part of a three-month community observance using music, film, exhibits and other art to remember the victims, survivors and rescuers of the Shoah, the Hebrew term for the Nazi destruction of European Jews in the 1930s and '40s."
Bearing Witness to the Holocaust. Survivor's daughter helps bring history to students,
by John Gessner, This Week Online, March 18, 2005
"As director of adult continuing education, Susan Flecker doesn’t have much contact with children in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191. But when the Sabes Jewish Community Center in Minneapolis announced it would present a play on modern-day Holocaust denial to Twin Cities school groups, Flecker took notice. She secured grant money through the JCC to send two Nicollet Junior High language- arts classes to see the play “Anne Frank and Me” last week. “It is part of my history,” said Flecker, the daughter of Polish, Orthodox Jewish parents imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II. The play, featuring mostly youth cast members of the JCC’s Center Outreach Playhouse, uses a modern teen-age girl’s dreamlike journey back in time to present a child’s view of the Holocaust as it might have been seen through the eyes of Anne Frank. “There was a lot of symbolism in the play, and I think they caught on to a lot of that,” said Nicollet teacher Danielle Christy, whose students saw the play with fellow teacher Brad Sorensen’s class. The classes are also in the middle of reading “The Diary of Anne Frank.”
Students Learn About America's Response to Holocaust by Creating Editorial Cartoons,
David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies
"Several hundred middle-school and high-school students attended a recent Wyman Institute program at the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy, a prominent Jewish day school in Rockville, Maryland. The event included a display of "Cartoonists Against the Holocaust: Art in the Service of Humanity," the Institute's exhibit of 1940s editorial cartoons that challenged America's response to news of the Holocaust. In his remarks to the students, Dr. Rafael Medoff spoke about the handful of editorial cartoonists who used their art to raise public awareness of what was happening to the Jews in Europe. Many of the students subsequently took part in a Wyman Institute contest in which they designed their own cartoons, as if they were editorial cartoonists in the 1940s who were trying to alert the public about the Nazi genocide or press for U.S. intervention to rescue refugees. The Wyman Institute's panel of judges for the contest consisted of Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer (replacing Will Eisner, who recently passed away); Joe Kubert, legendary comic book artist and editor; internationally known artist Mark Podwal, whose illustrations appear frequently on the op-ed page of the New York Times; "Dry Bones" cartoonist Ya'akov Kirschen; Adam Kubert, one of the top artists at Marvel Comics; and Rena Fruchter, director of the Deborah Lerner Gross Jewish Cultural Arts Center at the Hebrew Academy. The prizes will be awarded at a special ceremony this spring, which will include a public exhibit of the winning cartoons. The Wyman Institute is now preparing to hold the "Cartoonists Against the Holocaust" program and contest in other schools around the country."
Danes honored at Holocaust museum's awards dinner. Ambassador tells of Denmark's heroics,
by Darren Meritz, El Paso Times (Texas), March 17, 2005
"Patrons of the El Paso Holocaust Museum and Study Center on Wednesday night heard Danish Ambassador Ulrik Federspiel detail the dangerous rescue of thousands of Danish Jews from the Nazis during World War II ... Leaders of the El Paso Holocaust Museum said on Wednesday that the Danish people during the atrocities of World War II exhibited bravery when much of the world was closing its eyes to what was happening ... "Unfortunately, history has a nasty way of repeating itself," Federspiel said. "Anti-Semitism, extremism is by no means extinct."
History of Holocaust offers lessons for modern audience. This year's conference puts Holocaust in context of genocide and human rights violations across the globe,
by Kevin Kim, Michigan Daily, March 15, 2005
"The 26th annual Conference on the Holocaust will kick off today as a variety of students, faculty and speakers come together in an effort to not only remember the horrors of the Holocaust, but to apply its lessons to contemporary human rights issues. Conference co-chair Tori Roth said what makes this conference — themed “A World Forever Changed” — especially different from past conferences is the wider coverage of genocidal and human rights crimes around the world. “We wanted to include programs that were not necessarily directly related to the Holocaust — we wanted to address global human rights issues and modern-day instances of hatred,” Roth said. “We know that just talking about the Holocaust won’t change things — we have to make it apply to the world today to show that the lessons of the Holocaust never lose relevance.” The weeklong conference, taking place from today to March 23, features a series of events including speeches by professors and survivors, an art exhibit, a film screening and a play ... The main organization behind the event is Hillel, which works as an umbrella organization for many Jewish student groups and events, including the Conference on the Holocaust committee. The conference was first held 26 years ago with the dual goal of Holocaust commemoration and education and has taken place every year since ... Another event on Thursday, co-sponsored by Ahmoja — a group that aims to strengthen relations between blacks and Jews — presents the experiences of Holocaust survivor David Gewirtzman and Jacqueline Murekatete, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Many other groups, including the Muslim Students’ Association, American Movement for Israel, Crusade for Christ and Amnesty International, are contributing to the event by participating in the 24-hour vigil on the Diag or giving donations to sponsor the event."
Holocaust-survivor prof mulls 'killers, saviours',
by By JOSEF SZENDE, The Varsity, March 10, 2005
"Columbia University historian and survivor of the Hungarian Holocaust Istvan Deák spoke on Monday about the course of World War Two in his home country. "The heroes of the Holocaust years were not those who obeyed the law, but those who were willing to break it."

Holocaust remarks prompt uproar,
by Rebecca Cook, The Seattle Times, March 19, 2005
"State House Minority Leader Bruce Chandler apologized yesterday for remarks other Republicans made earlier in the week comparing embryonic-stem-cell research to the Holocaust. "The references made to the Holocaust were regarded by some, understandably, as insensitive and inappropriate," Chandler, R-Granger, said on the House floor. However, one of the representatives who made such a comparison said he did not mean to disparage the mass murder of Jews in Hitler's Germany and saw no reason to apologize personally. "This is not about any diminishment of that experience," said Rep. Glenn Anderson, R-Fall City. "It's about actually honoring that experience as we move forward." Chandler said he'd spoken with Jewish community leaders about the stem-cell debate. "I offer my apologies to them and to people who have committed their lives to using science to improve humanity."
Rep. Shay Schual-Berke, D-Normandy Park, who sponsored the bill endorsing embryonic-stem-cell research and who is Jewish, said she believed Chandler's apology was heartfelt, sincere and appropriate ... Comparing the murder of 6 million Jews to stem-cell research, she said, "is just unthinkable." ... Schual-Berke's bill passed 59-36 in the House after an emotional, sometimes tearful debate late Tuesday night. A couple of Republican representatives — not Chandler — referred very obliquely to the Holocaust, but Anderson drew the most direct comparison ... Trivialization feared Comments such as Anderson's trivialize the Holocaust, said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. The Holocaust was a uniquely horrific event, he said, so any comparison inevitably cheapens the memory. "I understand people use it to get the shock effect," Foxman said. "Either they are totally ignorant about what the Holocaust was all about, or they're insensitive, or they're bigoted." ... Earlier this month the Anti-Defamation League criticized U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., for comparing a Senate GOP plan to block Democrats from filibustering to the tactics Hitler used in his rise to power. Washington state Jewish leaders plan a news conference at the Capitol on Tuesday to emphasize that the Holocaust shouldn't be used as a rhetorical device."
Arab sets up Holocaust teaching center,
by David Rudge, Jerusalem Post, March 18, 2005
"An Umm el-Fahm resident has spent some NIS 20,000 of his own money to establish what is reportedly the first-ever Holocaust teaching center in the Israeli Arab sector. Lawyer Khaled Mahameed decided on the step to help disseminate information about the Holocaust to Arabs to create greater understanding that he hopes will eventually lead to peace and equality. The center, known as the Arab Institute for Holocaust Research and Education, is based in Nazareth, in a hall that he has rented along the city s main street not far from Mary's Well. Mahameed, whose office is also in Nazareth, said he purchased some 80 photographs from Yad Vashem for exhibition at the center, which wasinaugurated on the same day as Yad Vashem s new Holocaust History Museum. He has written an explanatory booklet in Arabic, which contains explicit photographs of the horrors of the Holocaust, and has printed some 2,000 copies. He has also offered stipends to Arab pupils wanting to study the subject and created a Web site on the Internet (Alkaritha.com)."
C-SPAN to feature Holocaust denier?,
Media Matters
"C-SPAN is under fire for reportedly planning to accompany its broadcast of a lecture by Holocaust studies professor Deborah E. Lipstadt with coverage of a speech by David Irving, who sued Lipstadt in Britain for calling him a Holocaust denier. According to The New York Times, the British court dismissed the suit, "concluding that Mr. Irving was anti-Semitic and racist and ... deliberately misrepresented and manipulated historical evidence."
