Revealed: Israel plans strike on Iranian nuclear plant,

"Israel has drawn up secret plans for a combined air and ground attack on targets in Iran if diplomacy fails to halt the Iranian nuclear programme. The inner cabinet of Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister, gave “initial authorisation” for an attack at a private meeting last month on his ranch in the Negev desert. Israeli forces have used a mock-up of Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment plant in the desert to practise destroying it. Their tactics include raids by Israel’s elite Shaldag (Kingfisher) commando unit and airstrikes by F-15 jets from 69 Squadron, using bunker-busting bombs to penetrate underground facilities. The plans have been discussed with American officials who are said to have indicated provisionally that they would not stand in Israel’s way if all international efforts to halt Iranian nuclear projects failed. Tehran claims that its programme is designed for peaceful purposes but Israeli and American intelligence officials — who have met to share information in recent weeks — are convinced that it is intended to produce nuclear weapons. The Israeli government responded cautiously yesterday to an announcement by Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, that America would support Britain, France and Germany in offering economic incentives for Tehran to abandon its programme. In return, the European countries promised to back Washington in referring Iran to the United Nations security council if the latest round of talks fails to secure agreement ... “No pressure, bribe or threat can make Iran give up its legitimate right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes,” said an Iranian spokesman. US officials warned last week that a military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities by Israeli or American forces had not been ruled out should the issue become deadlocked at the United Nations."

"Israeli troops are training for an assault on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Will it happen and what would be the fallout? ... For the past few months, elite Israeli commandos have been training for an assault on Iran’s nuclear facilities. One more full rehearsal has been scheduled for next month, said senior Israeli intelligence sources last week. The news that Israel is planning unilateral action to end what it considers an imminent Iranian nuclear threat comes as American and European diplomats are announcing new initiatives for negotiation with Tehran. Although publicly committed to the diplomatic effort, Israeli officials say the “point of no return” will come later this year when they calculate Iran will be in a position to start processing uranium. They say Ariel Sharon’s inner cabinet has decided to act alone if the impasse has not been broken. “If all efforts to persuade Iran to drop its plans to produce nuclear weapons should fail, the US administration will authorise Israel to attack,” said one Israeli security source. So in the tradition of Israeli military adventurism — the honour roll includes the destruction of Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981 and the raid on Entebbe, Uganda, in 1976 — Jerusalem is preparing for another daring strike.It is a move which, if carried out, might scupper President George W Bush’s Middle East peace plans and unleash the full force of Iran’s military might against Israel and Jewish interests around the globe ... Officials said that for more than a year, Israeli special forces have been operating a listening post close to the Iranian border in Iraqi Kurdistan. It is also said to have deployed intelligence-gathering submarines in the Gulf and sent special forces on spying missions. The Israeli Ofek-6 spy satellite — previously used to monitor Saddam Hussein’s Iraq — has also been moved to an Iranian orbit. Unlike Osirak, the Israelis are said this time to be co-ordinating with American forces. They have no choice. Any air-launched attack on Iran would send Israeli warplanes over Turkey and close to Iraqi airspace, currently controlled by the Pentagon. Both Washington and Jerusalem know that whoever carries out any attack, the world will see it as a joint conspiracy. It is equally clear that a number of hurdles stand in the way. Jerusalem must prepare for retaliatory assaults, either by Iranian-supplied missiles based in Lebanon or by Iranian backed terrorists ... “Yes, of course you can do a bit of bombing,” said a senior Washington official. “But are you sure you can hit everything? No. And when you’ve done it, what’s the reaction? The Iranians close ranks, there’s international uproar and they’ve still got their weapons programme. What did you achieve by this?”

Anti-Semitic slur found on business,

"An anti-Semitic slur was written on the garage door of a Jewish-owned business, and the windshields of two of the company's vans were smashed late Wednesday or early Thursday. An employee of Quality Construction on Colfax Avenue discovered the vandalism at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Noah Tenenbaum, the company's owner, said. The last employees left the business at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, he said. The evidence of the crime was still visible Thursday afternoon. The phrase "F--- YOU JEW" was scrawled in black magic marker on the building's white garage door. The vans, which were parked in the street outside of the building, were apparently struck with a hammer. A small round hole was punched through one windshield, and two small round cracks sat at the center of spider-web-shaped cracks in the other windshield ... Tenenbaum, who lives in Livingston and who has run his construction business in Clifton for 30 years, said he had a suspicion about who was responsible for the damage to his property, but added that it would be inappropriate to speculate. "It's got to be someone that knows me or knows that I'm Jewish," he said. Tenenbaum is the son of Holocaust survivors and the co-chairman of the Maplewood and South Orange Interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Committee ... "Some 247,000 Israelis, mostly new immigrants from former Soviet Union countries, cannot get married in Israel because they are not considered Jewish, Central Bureau of Statistics data show. The figures also show that in 2002, 7,089 Israelis got married overseas - with 49 percent of them tying the knot in Cyprus - compared to only 3,639 in 1997. Other popular marriage destinations included Bulgaria, the U.S., and former Soviet Union countries. According to the data, 1,408 Israeli men married non-Israeli brides overseas, and 789 Israeli brides married non-Israeli men. Also, the figures indicate that the number of marriage ceremonies performed by Israel's religious establishment, the rabbinate, has significantly dropped since the 1970’s in relation to the increase of the Jewish population in Israel ... Zamira Segev of the Forum for Free Choice in Marriage says the large number of Jewish immigrants who choose to get married overseas proves they do not want “to go through the torture of the rabbinate exams.” "The continuous rise in the number of Israelis who get married abroad shows the need for a comprehensive solution," she says. “The fact that most of the those who get married overseas are Jews proves the Jewish public is tired of the religious coercion and the orthodox monopoly.”

Katsav: Sensitivity to Holocaust growing,

"Leaders of the free world are showing more sensitivity to the Holocaust than ever before," President Moshe Katsav said Sunday. He was referring to the large number of presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers and other dignitaries from abroad who will be attending the Tuesday opening of Yad Vashem's new History Museum. "Perhaps they needed the historic perspective of 60 years to identify with the Holocaust," he said, noting that this large-scale, high-ranking commemoration started at Auschwitz-Birkenau in January, is being given further expression in Israel this week, and will gain momentum in Russia in May. Applauding the decisions of those world leaders who have come to Israel at this time, Katsav said they have come to show solidarity not only with Israel but against anti-Semitism. Katsav, who will meet the dignitaries at Yad Vashem and again at a state dinner that he and his wife Gila will host at the Knesset on Tuesday evening, will also have private meetings with some of them at Beit Hanassi. He is scheduled to meet on Monday with Latvian President Vaidan Adamkus, Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski and United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. On Tuesday Katsav will meet with Dominican vice president Rafael Alburquerque de Castro, Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson, Albanian President Alfred Moisiu, Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, with whom he has met several times both in Israel and in Poland, and Ivan Gasparovic, the president of Slovakia. Katsav's scheduled meetings on Wednesday are with Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, Swiss President Samuel Schmid, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, Bosnia-Herzegovina President Borislav Paravac, and the head of the Danish delegation, Anders Fogh Rasmussen. The round of meetings with world leaders concludes on Thursday with Svetozar Marovic, the president of Serbia-Montenegro. Meanwhile, Katsav has received a letter from German President Horst Kohler assuring him that Germany will remain permanently committed to the struggle against anti-Semitism, right-wing extremism and racism. Kohler, who initially met Katsav in Poland in January and again in Israel at the beginning of February, reiterated Germany's warm friendship towards Israel and concurred with Katsav's view that the best way to enhance the cordial bilateral relations was to expand the youth interchanges so that each would get to know and understand the other ... Germany will be represented at the Yad Vashem ceremony by Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, who is a frequent visitor to Israel."

In London, where she came to study Arabic at the School of Oriental and African Studies, she believes that she is singled out as a Zionist extremist. Ms Gerrard, 29, is one of a number of Israeli and Jewish students at the renowned college in Russell Square, Central London, who complain of being targeted by radical Muslim students in an increasingly isolating and intimidating atmosphere. Concern about anti-Semitism at the school has led Hazel Blears, the Minister who is responsible for policing and community safety, to order her officials to prepare a report on events at SOAS. She told MPs that legislation banning religious hatred may be needed. “If any of these incidents are breaches of the criminal law, then there is provision for religiously aggravated offences now in terms of the provisions that we brought in,” Ms Blears said. For Ms Gerrard, action to combat the abuse cannot come soon enough. “This is not a good place to be a Jewish student, and especially not if you are Israeli as well,” she said. “It is getting out of hand. Consistently people just look at me as Jewish or Israeli. They don’t look at me as an individual. I am interested in a peaceful solution. I came here to study Arabic and have productive discussions with people of different views. It is very frustrating and unpleasant just to be seen as the enemy.” ... SOAS, founded in 1916, prides itself on its academic reputation, its diverse student population and its vibrant political debate. But with world affairs dominated by events in the Middle East, college authorities are worried about bitter divisions in the student body. They have intervened twice in recent months to reverse student union decisions. Earlier this month they overturned the election of Ken Livingstone as honorary president of the student union. The Mayor of London had been nominated at the height of the controversy over his remarks to a newspaper reporter who is Jewish. The meeting at which he was elected produced a heated argument about Middle East politics dominated by talk of Zionist conspiracies."

The council asserted that animals killed according to Jewish law, without being pre-stunned, were "likely to experience very significant pain and distress." With the naming of Disney President Robert Iger as his successor, Eisner demonstrated once again the enormous control he wields over the Disney empire. By picking Iger, an Eisner protege and the lone inside candidate, the Disney board effectively endorsed the status quo. In contrast to an outsider, who might have felt pressure to transform the Burbank, Calif.-based entertainment corporation, Iger will no doubt endorse continuity ... The board's decision revealed Eisner's genius for managing and protecting his legacy at Disney. "The federal government on Friday reached a US$25.5 million (euro19 million) settlement with the families of Hungarian Holocaust victims and will acknowledge the U.S. Army's role in commandeering a trainload of the families' treasures during World War II. Under the terms of the settlement, the money will be distributed to needy Hungarian Holocaust survivors rather than individual claimants who lost family possessions. About US$21 million (euro15.7 million) in funding for humanitarian services will be distributed to social service agencies worldwide based on the percentage of survivors, including 40 percent in Israel, 22 percent in Hungary, 21 percent in the United States and 7 percent in Canada."

"Since World War II, no state has suffered so cruel a reversal of fortunes as Israel. Admired all the way into the 1970s as the state of “those plucky Jews” who survived against all odds and made democracy and the desert bloom in a climate hostile to both liberty and greenery, Israel has become the target of creeping delegitimization ... One motif is the “wagging the dog” theory. Thus, in the United States, the “Jewish lobby” and a cabal of neoconservatives have bamboozled the Bush administration into a mindless pro-Israel policy inimical to the national interest. This view attributes, as has happened so often in history, too much clout to the Jews. And behind this charge lurks a more general one—that it is somehow antidemocratic for subnational groups to throw themselves into the hurly-burly of politics when it comes to foreign policy ... Another soft version is the “root-cause” theory in its many variations. Because the “obstinate” and “recalcitrant” Israelis are the main culprits, they must be punished and pushed back for the sake of peace. “Put pressure on Israel”; “cut economic and military aid”; “serve them notice that we will not condone their brutalities”—these have been the boilerplate homilies, indeed the obsessions, of the chattering classes and the foreign-office establishment for decades. Yet, as Sigmund Freud reminded us, obsessions tend to spread. And so there are ever more creative addenda to the well-wrought root-cause theory. Anatol Lieven of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace argues that what is happening between Israelis and Palestinians is a “tremendous obstacle to democratization because it inflames all the worst, most regressive aspects of Arab nationalism and Arab culture.” In other words, the conflict drives the pathology, and not the other way around—which is like the streetfighter explaining to the police: “It all started when this guy hit back.” ...Is this anti-Semitism, as so many Jews are quick to suspect? No, but denying Israel’s legitimacy bears an uncanny resemblance to some central features of this darkest of creeds. Accordingly, the Jews are omnipotent, ubiquitous, and thus responsible for the evils of the world. Today, Israel finds itself in an analogous position, either as handmaiden or manipulator of U.S. might. The soft version sighs: “If only Israel were more reasonable…” The semihard version demands that “the United States pull the rug out from under Israel” to impose the pliancy that comes from impotence. And the hard-hard version dreams about salvation springing from Israel’s disappearance. Why, sure—if it weren’t for that old joke from Israel’s War of Independence: While the bullets were whistling overhead and the two Jews in their foxhole were running out of rounds, one griped, “If the Brits had to give us a country not their own, why couldn’t they have given us Switzerland?” Alas, Israel is just a strip of land in the world’s most noxious neighborhood, and the cleanup hasn’t even begun." "Unreported in the corporate controlled press, the Israeli boycott of the recent international Middle East peace summit in London illustrates why the Israel-Palestine conflict remains stuck in a quagmire after 57 years and who is ultimately responsible. Although Israel stayed away, its hard-line government dictated the conference agenda and terms of discussion. Foreign ministers and high-level delegations from 23 nations and six international organizations convened in London on March 1 to try and advance the “peace process” between the Palestinians and Israelis. The attendees included the newly elected Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan,Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the European Union’s (EU) foreign policy chief Javier Solana and World Bank president James D. Wolfensohn.Representatives from the UN, EU, the United States and Russia—the “Quartet” members who drafted the current peace plan known as the “road map”—were also present for the one-day conference at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Center. Despite the presence of so many high-level delegations, the international gathering, which Blair had originally hoped would be, or lead to, a peace conference, was unable to advance the peace process even one step because the chief antagonist of the conflict in Palestine, the Israeli government, simply boycotted the conference. This, however, went unreported in the U.S. mainstream media."

"Pittsburgh's Jewish community turned out in force last night for Norman G. Finkelstein's lecture at Carnegie Mellon University. People lined up by the dozen more than an hour before the speech began, anxious to claim a seat in McConomy Auditorium. Normally, this is not Finkelstein's crowd. The scholar and author of books like the international best-seller "The Holocaust Industry" and the forthcoming "Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History," Finkelstein argues that American Jewry has "played the Holocaust card," exploiting the suffering of Jews as a political tool to generate sympathy for Israeli policy and further the aims of Zionism. Finkelstein also spoke of human rights abuses Israel has inflicted on Arabs. Many in the crowd spoke of betrayal and outrage that Finkelstein, whose parents both survived the ghettos and concentration camps of Europe, would draw analogies between Nazi and Israeli policies. So why wait in line to hear the man speak for two hours? It was part of a carefully planned effort by the United Jewish Federation to minimize the impact of Finkelstein's appearance by quietly filling the seats of the lecture hall with Jews already inured to his "ridiculous and vile distortions," said Jeffrey Cohan, spokesman for the UJF. "Hip Christians proclaim their faith with WWJD bracelots and T-shirts emblazoned with 'Jesus is my homeboy.' The teenager mentioned that to his dad, and a new business was born. Larry Broome - with some creative input from his 14-year-old son Will - has created KewlJu, a line of T-shirts and jewelry marketed online to young Jews. Broome calls it "21st-century Jewish gear." The product line includes black T-shirts and red tank tops that say "Hot 4 Hebrew" and "KewlJu" - a more hip version of "cool Jew" that Will says is "not so ordinary. It's not boring." The Broomes have sold about 200 shirts at $15 to $28 each and 1,000 Lance Armstrong-inspired blue bracelets, at $3 each, that say "Chosen." ... Broome, who separately sells broadcast equipment, is stepping into a territory overwhelmingly dominated by Christian products, on which Americans spend $4.5 billion a year. Christian retailing has become increasingly mainstream. The initials WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?) decorate everything from bracelets and T-shirts to mugs and pencils ... "The Government has blocked a private one-day visit to New Zealand by Israel's second most senior military officer.
Deputy Chief of Staff Major-General Gabi Ashkenazi was to have addressed a meeting in Auckland last Sunday of the United Israel Appeal, the premier Jewish fundraising agency. A spokesman for Foreign Minister Phil Goff confirmed yesterday that a visa had been refused and linked the decision to the unresolved diplomatic row over the passport fraud affair. He said General Ashkenazi's proposed visit "fell well outside the relevant guidelines" established by the Government last July. This was after two Israelis, believed to be Mossad agents, tried to obtain a passport by assuming the identity of a disabled New Zealander. Among the steps taken were restrictions on high-level visits from Israel to New Zealand. A spokesman for the Prime Minister said yesterday that Helen Clark "could not recall" whether General Ashkenazi's visa application had been run past her, but "a matter like that would be the Foreign Minister's decision - and it would be in keeping with the official position on contacts with Israel at present". The Immigration Service turned down the application just days before the planned trip. In the end, senior Cabinet minister Natan Sharansky spoke to the 180-strong Auckland audience by phone from Jerusalem. United Israel Appeal officials in Auckland and Sydney declined to comment ... Speaking from Tel Aviv, a spokesman for General Ashkenazi's office would not comment, other than to say the general had decided not to visit New Zealand "for personal reasons".

"Foreign Affairs Minister Phil Goff has said diplomatic talks to secure an apology over the Israeli spies case are progressing. The Government is seeking an assurance from Israel that there will be no repeat of the incident in which suspected Mossad agents attempted to fraudulently obtain New Zealand passports. Mr Goff said today: "We have had an approach from Israel. We are hopeful the matter can be resolved and normal relations resumed." The onus was on Israel to solve the problem as New Zealand was the wronged party. "This country takes seriously agents being sent to do criminal acts," he said. His comments came after the Herald revealed the Government refused to allow a senior Israeli military officer to visit New Zealand ... The president of the Jewish Council, David Zwartz, said there was a long history of the Jewish community inviting speakers from overseas to fundraising events. "I think it's unfortunate that the Government is applying its guidelines on a matter of diplomatic difference between Israel and New Zealand in a way that punishes the New Zealand Jewish community," he said on National Radio."

"In a symbolic but stunning rebuke, Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences passed a motion Tuesday saying it lacked confidence in President Lawrence Summers - the first such action in the nearly 400-year history of the university. The arts and sciences faculty is one of 10 that comprise the university. Summers reports to the Harvard Corporation, the university's governing board, which has expressed its support for him. But the 218-185 vote supporting the motion - which even supporters had expected to be defeated - was a significant setback to Summers' efforts to rebuild his standing with Harvard's faculty in the wake of the uproar over his comments about women in science at an academic conference in January. At the very least, the vote seemed likely to prolong the period of divisiveness among faculty and hinder Summers' efforts to return focus to his agenda for remaking the university. The measure stated simply: "The Faculty lacks confidence in the leadership of Lawrence H. Summers." The faculty also passed, 253-137, a milder rebuke of Summers' comments and "managerial approach." "As I said to the faculty, I have tried these last couple months to listen to all that has been said, to learn from it, and to move forward, and that's what I am going to do," Summers said afterward. J. Lorand Matory, a professor of anthropology and African and African-American studies, introduced the lack-of-confidence motion. He had expected it to be supported by no more than 30 percent of attendees. Matory said Summers should quit. "There is no noble alternative to resignation," he said. Summers, however, has given no indication of stepping down ... The criticism over Summers' comments quickly expanded into a broader attacks on the president's management style and his vision for the university, including major projects to expand Harvard's campus across the Charles River in Boston, and his ideas about what direction scientific research should take.
