24 arrested in massive money-laundering probe at Hapoalim,

"Twenty-four employees, past and present, of Bank Hapoalim's Hayarkon Street branch in Tel Aviv were arrested Sunday in what officials called the biggest money-laundering case in the history of the state, thought to involve hundreds of millions of dollars in the past year. The Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court Sunday remanded for five days the branch's former manager, Motti Cohen, on suspicion of involvement in massive illegal money-laundering schemes, which included leading "oligarchs" from Russia who also had business interests in Israel. The head of customer relations in the branch, Yaakov Sverdelik, and the head of the Commonwealth of Independent States desk, Alik Leder, were also remanded for five days. The court also remanded, for three days each, Dalia Kaiserman, head of the branch's French desk, and David Abutbul, who was responsible for French customers in the bank. Investigators from the International Crimes Unit said that hundreds of millions of dollars were illegally laundered through the bank over the past year. Police sources said they have evidence that senior officials in the bank knew about the laundering and chose not to report it. Police are now investigating whether senior executives at the national level
of the bank were aware of the money-laundering. Sunday, police froze 180 accounts held by 18 customers at the branch, accounts that police suspect were used as conduits for the flow of money from outside the country into those accounts and then, via "back-to-back" standing orders, sending the money out of the country. At least 45 customers will be summoned in coming days by the police to answer questions about signs of laundering in their accounts. But all the customers of the bank - about 200 businesspeople - will be questioned, as police try to determine just how extensive the laundering was in the branch. Among those likely to be questioned are Maariv owner Vladimir Gusinski, whose Tel Aviv offices were raided Sunday, and Israeli ambassador to London Zvi Hefetz, who was Gusinski's point man in Israel. The case was only made possible by the promulgation of an anti-money laundering law that went into effect two years ago. Many of the bank's employees, including the manager and other senior officials, took part in the laundering on behalf of their customers, police said. The branch, which only handles foreign customers, had effectively become a money-laundering
station for hundreds of businesses worldwide, said police sources ... Police described several of the laundering methods they say were used at the bank. In some cases, large sums of money would flow into an account and immediately flow out, in smaller amounts, to shell companies around the world, in an effort to hide the original source of the funds. A second way was to break up large sums of money into smaller amounts deposited in separate accounts in the bank, thus enabling businessmen to avoid the rule requiring the bank to report cash transfers of more than NIS 1 million if it involves money from overseas or NIS 50,000 if it is money from inside Israel. A third method was for the businessman to deposit a large sum, take a loan of the same amount from the bank and then send the borrowed money overseas, with the loan covered by the sum that remained in the account."

"Police questioned former Bank Hapoalim CEO Eli Yones on Monday in connection with what officials have called the biggest money-laundering case in the history of the state, thought to involve hundreds of millions of dollars in the past year. Earlier Monday, police arrested the head of the French desk at the bank's Hayarkon branch in Tel Aviv, Keren Lalum, bringing the total number of current and former employees under arrest to 13. The Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court extended her remand by four days. Police also began questioning the bank's clients Monday and arrested one of them ... Additionally, police are investigating the possibility that the bank's branch in France interfered with the investigation. The French branch is in business contact with the Hayarkon branch ... Other names that have arisen in the police investigation include those of Leonid Nevzlin, who like Gusinsky left Russia to seek further fortunes elsewhere, and Arkady Gaidmak, a billionaire who moved back to Moscow after a brief stint living in Caesarea. Gaidmak is said to be one of the 50 richest people in the world ... Israel Radio reported Monday that two senior bank officers may have recently sold Hapoalim shares valued at $900 million. One of the two mentioned was Shari Arison, billionaire heiress to the Carnival cruise line fortune. Monday's arrests came a day after 24 people were detained, all of them past and present employees of the bank's Hayarkon Street branch."

Professors Explore Holocaust Imagery,

"'Visualizing the Holocaust: Taboos and Potentialities," a conference held to discuss how to understand and interpret visual representations of the Holocaust, was held at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts last Thursday and Friday. Seventeen scholars from a variety of colleges attended the conference. Many of the papers discussed at this conference were based on work done at the German Academic Exchange Service (DADD) summer seminar held at Cornell in 2003, according to David Bathrick, J.G. Schurman Professor of Theatre Film and Dance and professor of German studies. Visual representations of the Holocaust have been ingrained in American culture. Movies such as Schindler's List and Life is Beautiful, both of which dealt with the Holocaust, have enjoyed long box office runs and have gone on to win Academy Awards. Similarly, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum opened to the public in 1993, and traveling exhibitions are held across the country. All of these representations are designed to make sure that the atrocity of the Holocaust will never be forgotten and to serve as tribute to those who lost their lives, as well as those who survived. Prof. Lisa J. Nicoletti, art, Centenary College of Louisiana, spoke of the cultural significance of Anne Frank. "Elvis-like, [Anne Frank] haunts American Culture," Nicoletti said. "Americans regularly celebrate her birthday. Her favorite thirteenth birthday gift [her diary] first led to our relationship with her." Nicoletti theorized that representations of Anne Frank, whether through her book or through the many museum exhibits around the world, resonate with Americans because they bring to the fore some of our worst fears and anxieties, especially the fear of a missing, kidnapped child. Nicoletti also mentioned several artists who have created their own representations of Frank. Rachel Schreiber's 1999 series Anne in New York consisted of a series of photographs depicting photographs of Frank stenciled onto buildings and vehicles in contemporary New York City. According to Nicoletti, "Schreiber was interested in exposing the 'cult of Anne Frank' and questioning how she has come to symbolize the suffering of millions of people" ... Other themes explored at the conference included the use of photographs and narratives as ways of representing the Holocaust."

Billionaire gets two years for fraud, sex tape,

"Charles Kushner built a billion-dollar real estate company and used the money to contribute millions to political candidates and charitable organizations. Yet the real estate mogul's political influence and philanthropy could not save him Friday from a maximum two-year federal prison sentence for tax fraud, campaign finance violations and an obstruction plot that involved hiring a prostitute to seduce his sister's husband. Kushner, 50, of Livingston, pleaded guilty Aug. 18. He admitted he had videotaped his brother-in-law having sex with a prostitute and, four months later, sent the tape to his sister. The sister, Esther Schulder, had been cooperating in a federal investigation against him. Standing before U.S. District Court Judge Jose L. Linares, Kushner said friends asked him how he could do something so unthinkable. "My poor judgment was really rooted in a very sad, very tragic family dispute that just spiraled out of control," Kushner said. Linares ordered Kushner to serve two years in prison and two years probation and pay $40,000 in fines. The billionaire remains free on $5 million bail and must report to federal prison in Montgomery, Ala., by May 9. Kushner's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, called his client a victim, driven to desperation by a jealous older brother bent on sabotage. He said Kushner's older brother, Murray, hired someone to steal files in an attempt to extort Kushner and destroy his company. Arguing for the minimum sentence of 18 months, Brafman said Kushner's countless acts of extraordinary kindness - detailed in more than 700 letters to the judge - merited leniency. Federal prosecutors said Kushner coolly carried out an evil, horrific plot driven by greed, power and revenge. "This was a complex scheme to put together and bankroll," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Resnik. "It required the corruption of a police officer, a private investigator and two prostitutes. But for the morality of a corrupt police officer, the defendant, Charles Kushner, was willing to send the videotape to his own nieces and nephews." Prosecutors said they are concerned that copies of the videotapes still exist. Linares shared the prosecution's concerns and asked to question Kushner, so he could "look him in the eye." Kushner told the judge he had destroyed all copies in his possession. Kushner, who addressed the judge for eight minutes, said he was not as saintly or as evil as the opposing attorneys made out. "On balance, Your Honor, I am still proud of my life," Kushner said. Kushner headed the $1 billion real estate conglomerate Kushner Cos. He donated more than $1 million to New Jersey Democrats and was the lead benefactor for Gov. James E. McGreevey's 2001 campaign. Kushner also sponsored the work visa that allowed Golan Cipel to come to the United States. He gave Cipel a $30,000-a-year public relations job at one of his companies. McGreevey resigned in August, revealing he had an affair with a man his advisers identified as Cipel. Kushner also partnered with U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine, D-N.J., to submit an unsuccessful offer to buy the New Jersey Nets. Appointed to chair the New York New Jersey Port Authority in 2003, Kushner stepped down from the post after state Sen. Bill Gormley, R-Atlantic, sought to bring the developer before the state Senate Judiciary Committee to answer questions about his ownership of a Livingston Bank. Weeks after his indictment in August, Kushner pleaded guilty to 16 counts of filing false tax returns for partnerships affiliated with his company to avoid $325,000 in taxes. He also admitted to making campaign contributions in the names of other members of his company without their knowledge. It's the tape he sent to his sister, however, that made Kushner a national story. The son of Holocaust survivors, Kushner told the judge he visited the grave of his parents to seek forgiveness. "I'm grateful my parents are not alive to be here today to witness the malicious fighting amongst all their children," Kusher said. "My parents are crying from heaven." Kushner's older brother, Murray, left the company in 1999 after a bitter dispute. The brothers filed lawsuits against each other soon after. Outside the federal courthouse after the sentencing, Brafman told reporters his client had been pushed too far by a sister and older brother who joined forces to destroy him. "Sending Charlie Kushner to jail is not a good thing for this country," Brafman said. "Charlie Kushner will emerge from prison with his reputation intact. The people who brought him to this point will wallow in their own grief and shame." U.S. Attorney Chris Christie said the sentencing sent a message that no one avoids the law, no matter how rich or powerful. He said he was "personally sickened" by Brafman's insistence that Kushner was a victim. "That went beyond the pale of advocacy for a client," Christie said. "It indicates there is not a full appreciation for his crimes. I don't think he (Kushner) understands he's not above the law. I don't think he'll understand until he sets foot in prison."

"A federal judge sentenced multimillionaire developer and Democratic Party political donor Charles B. Kushner to two years in prison Friday, declaring Kushner's wealth, power and widespread charity don't trump criminal acts that included tax fraud, campaign-finance violations and witness retaliation. Prosecutors argued before U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares that regardless of his stature, Kushner should serve the maximum time in prison outlined in an August plea deal for crimes they labeled "vile and outrageous." The top political donor for former Gov. James E. McGreevey and a top contributor in national Democratic circles, Kushner was charged last July with 18 criminal counts, including a scheme that involved hiring a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law and mailing a video of the tryst to his sister to discourage her testimony against him. But Kushner's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, insisted his client was also a victim in what he termed a "family squabble gone awry." Brafman urged Linares to examine all aspects of Kushner's life and later said he was angry and disappointed that the judge failed to acknowledge some 700 letters from Kushner supporters calling for leniency ... U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie praised Linares' decision and underscored that federal investigators are continuing their probe of Democratic fund-raising. Christie's office has charged or convicted 76 public officials — including 11 arrested in Monmouth County last week — in the past three years. "The message today is no matter how rich or how powerful you are in this state, if you decide to break the law, . . . you will be dealt with firmly," Christie said after the sentencing, adding that Kushner's crimes "cast a pall" on his charity ... Kushner, who has given more than $5 million to Democratic campaign committees in New Jersey during the past decade, was ordered this month to pay at least $12.5 million in fines for violating federal banking laws. He also paid $508,900 in 2004 — the fourth largest fine of its kind — to federal regulators for campaign-finance violations."

"When Dr. Tabare Ramon Vazquez was sworn in last week as the first leftist president in Uruguayan history, the country's 23,000-strong Jewish minority pondered the age-old question: Is this good for the Jews? The short answer, according to community leaders interviewed by phone from Sao Paulo, is yes. They say Uruguay's Jewish community has nothing to fear from Vazquez – despite his admiration for Cuba's Fidel Castro, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and other left-leaning, pro-Arab heads of state. "We're waiting to see what will happen," said Marcelo Cynovich, director of Hillel Uruguay and an activist in Zionist causes. "It seems like everyone is betting on this change. So far, it has not been like Venezuela, where right away Chavez cut off all contact with the Jewish community." "We have very good relations with many people in the new government, including ministers, deputies and senators," said Israel Buszkaniec, president of the Comite Central Israelita del Uruguay, an umbrella group of Jewish organizations, "In Venezuela, the Jewish community was against Chavez even before he took office, and it also supported the attempted coup against him" in 2002, he said. "Vazquez is nothing like Chavez." Indeed, Vazquez has named at least half a dozen Jews to government posts ... "Our original concern has always been the left-wing position with respect to Israel. But there is no material proof that the position of the new government will be different than the last government," said Miguel Brechner, who has been named by Vazquez to head Laboratorio Tecnologico del Uruguay, a state-owned scientific institute. "Its policy in general will probably focus more on human rights and respect for minorities." Until last month, Brechner was the Comite's general secretary, but he was required to step down from that post upon taking a government position. He said that Uruguay historically has enjoyed close relations with Israel, and there is no reason to think those relations would be endangered by Vazquez."

"Imagine that you're 65 years old and you're in jail. In solitary confinement. You are strip-searched whenever you see your lawyer. Once before. Once after. For two years. Imagine that you're there because two politicians signed a piece of paper ("security certificate") saying that you are a security risk. You are not charged with a crime. You don't have a criminal record. You have lived in Canada for 42 years. Imagine that those two politicians don't have to be right, so long as a judge thinks that they are "reasonable". So long as they are "reasonable", they can deport you to a country where you go to jail for saying something that you have the right to say in Canada. The Supreme Court of Canada had promised you that right. Imagine that the prosecutor and the judge get to meet secretly without you and your lawyer and you never find out what they did in secret, what they read, who they saw. Again and again. Imagine that your lawyer thought he was at a critical point in your trial. He thought the lunch break was longer then usual. Turns out the judge and the prosecutor were having a secret session again while you had lunch. They refuse to tell you or your lawyer what happened. Imagine that you are accused of causing violence so bad that you are a danger to Canadian national security. When you ask when and where, they say: can't tell you. You ask why not, they say: national security. Imagine that the judge is making so many mistakes that it took more than 100 pages of transcripts to show them all. Imagine the judge making the same mistakes again and again. And always to your detriment. Imagine this judge having the power to deport you and you have no right of appeal. Imagine that a prominent civil libertarian tells you this process is wrong and he will stand with you to say so, only to back out at the last minut. Imagine that he comes back as soon as you were deported, condemning this process as your plane left Canada. Imagine that a judge says she thinks this process is unfair to you and will say so in court, only to change her mind at the last minute. Imagine that a newspaper counts the number of security certificates and yours is never included. Imagine the moment you have been deported, everyone talks about how awful and illegal security certificates are. Imagine that the media is suddenly interested in you, as soon as they are sure that you will be deported. Your deportation and upcoming jail time is reported in meticulous detail. Imagine that this is Canada in 2005 and you've been named in a security certificate. Imagine that everyone says that security certificates are a disgrace to Canada but somehow it was fine to use one on you. Imagine that you may be Ernst Zundel, or you may be someone with an opinion disliked by many."

"Israel's ambassador to Britain, Zvi Heifetz, expressed outrage after London's outspoken mayor Ken Livingstone branded Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon a war criminal. In a statement, the diplomat accused Livingstone of trying to divert attention from a furore over his refusal to apologise for comparing a Jewish newspaper reporter to a Nazi German concentration camp guard. "It is obvious and unfortunate that the mayor is trying to manipulate public opinion and divert attention from the overwhelming criticism he has faced over the last few months," Heifetz said Saturday. "Israel has nothing to do with the issue at hand which remains the mayor's outrageous remark comparing a British journalist to a Nazi war criminal." "The mayor feels the need to emphasise that he's not an anti-Semite, but 'only' anti-Israeli. To support this distinction, he launched a virulent attack against Israel. We trust the public to know better and to see what stands behind his strategy." Writing in the Guardian newspaper, Livingstone -- a renegade within Prime Minister Tony Blair's governing Labour Party -- called Sharon "a war criminal who should be in prison, not in office". Livingstone also denounced "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians during the expansion of the Israeli state, Israeli settlements in the territories and the denial of Palestinians' right to return. Livingstone's article in The Guardian came as a response to criticism printed a day earlier in the same newspaper by the head of Board of Deputies of British Jews, Henry Grunwald. Grunwald said that the mayor had "let his office down" and should apologize for comments made to Oliver Finegold, a reporter for the Evening Standard, a paper which Livingstone considers hostile to him. The flap reached its height last month just as an International Olympic Committee (IOC) delegation was in London to size up the capital's bid to host the Olympic Games in 2012. Heifetz said: "The mayor denies the severity of anti-Semitism in Europe, although the alarming increase in UK incidents has been confirmed by Scotland Yard (London's Metropolitan Police). What will be his next denial?" "We live in a time of renewed world hope for peace in the Middle East, when Prime Minister Sharon is commended by all, including Arab leaders, for his courageous actions towards peace. The Mayor's defamatory views inflame prejudice and hatred between Israelis and Palestinians and serve only his private political agenda."

"The mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, has been referred to Scotland Yard following a complaint about comments he made to a Jewish reporter which have been recorded as a racial incident. Though initially categorised as a "non crime" event, it will nevertheless form part of the statistics for racial incidents in London when they are collated at the end of the year. Scotland Yard yesterday told the Guardian it was seeking guidance about what should happen next and has referred the matter to its lawyers. A spokesman said: "It will be looked at in line with current Met police hate crime policy." There is scope for the matter to escalate if it is judged that Mr Livingstone's behaviour could be construed as criminal and is worthy of a full-blown investigation. Alternatively, the Met could choose to give the mayor "words of advice". The mayor has responsibility for setting the Met's budget and has spearheaded its initiative to develop neighbourhood policing in London. He has made law and order a central theme over the past five years of his mayoralty. The Met has confirmed that it became involved in the controversy on February 28 when a "third party" made a formal complaint about Mr Livingstone's clash with Oliver Finegold, an Evening Standard reporter, two weeks previously. On hearing that Mr Finegold was Jewish, the mayor likened him to a Nazi concentration camp guard. Mr Livingstone has already been referred to the Standards Board for England, the local government watchdog, by the Board of Deputies of British Jews. The police are obliged to classify a complaint as a racial incident if the complainant or a credible third party believes it to be so. A spokesman for Mr Livingstone said: "The Met has received a complaint, logged it and concluded they will take a view once the Standards Board investigation is complete. The mayor regards the complaint as a clear case of wasting police time."

Born into a family that changed its name to sound less Jewish, Max Fisher grew up to become the voice of American Jewry, influencing U.S-Israeli relations for decades and forging the nation's most powerful Jewish organizations. "What's the movie they show every Christmas? 'It's a Wonderful Life'? The Jewish community without Max Fisher would be like that town without Jimmy Stewart," said Bob Aronson, director of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. "He is everything to us." Fisher's impact on the Jewish community, locally, nationally and internationally, is hard to overstate. He was the biggest donor, greatest fund-raiser and leading organizer of numerous causes for decades. He smoothed the frayed relations between the United States and Israel in the 1970s and eased the immigration of Russian Jews to America in the 1980s. Most importantly, Fisher helped nurture a new generation of Jewish leaders who are carrying on his vision ... Berman flew with Fisher on Fisher's private airplane to Israel at least 12 times from the 1960s to 1980s, as Fisher used his position as confidant of U.S. presidents and Israeli prime ministers to keep relations between the nations warm."

"The investigation into the murder of the French banker Edouard Stern took a bizarre twist yesterday with a report that he was shot while wearing a latex bodysuit. The report, by the Geneva newspaper Le Temps - a report neither confirmed nor denied by investigators - appeared to point to a personal motive for the killing. Investigators were, however, said to be keeping an open mind. M. Stern, 50, a keen poker player, was known to frequent risqué night-clubs in Geneva. Police believe that he may have been murdered by someone with whom he was having a sado-masochistic relationship. Swiss newspapers said that the police were also investigating the possibility that the rubber suit might be an attempt to throw them off the scent of a contract killing. M. Stern, a member of an ancient French-Jewish banking family, lost money in investments in Eastern Europe or Russia. He is rumoured in Geneva to have told friends that he felt under threat. The investigating magistrate, Michel Graber, said on Thursday night that M. Stern had been shot dead in the bedroom of his fifth-floor penthouse in a wealthy district near the Old Town of Geneva. There was no sign of a forced entry or struggle, he said, suggesting that M. Stern knew his assailant or assailants and had opened the door to them. He was last seen on Monday night, and his body was found by two business associates on Tuesday afternoon. The magistrate declined to give further details of the killing. The newspaper La Tribune de Genève reported yesterday that M. Stern had been shot three times, including two bullets in the head. Le Temps - without citing any sources - said that his body had been discovered dressed head to foot in a latex suit. Police and judicial sources in Geneva would not comment on these reports. The investment banker, formerly the son-in-law of Michel David-Weill, owner of Lazard, the French merchant bank, ran his own investment and consultancy company said to be worth €500m (£340m). From the age of 24, when he took over the family bank, ejecting his father, M. Stern had pursued a brilliant, if controversial, career in high finance. He sold the family firm and built another business, which he also sold. He married Béatrice David-Weill, daughter of the owner of Lazard, and seemed destined to take over as head of one of the few European banks to be a force on Wall Street. But in 1997 he split acrimoniously with his father-in-law and started his own investment company, which conducted a series of high-profile
deals - but was also said to have used off-shore tax havens to invest in Russia and Eastern Europe."

"The US military is funding development of a weapon that delivers a bout of excruciating pain from up to 2 kilometres away. Intended for use against rioters, it is meant to leave victims unharmed. But pain researchers are furious that work aimed at controlling pain has been used to develop a weapon. And they fear that the technology will be used for torture. "I am deeply concerned about the ethical aspects of this research," says Andrew Rice, a consultant in pain medicine at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. "Even if the use of temporary severe pain can be justified as a restraining measure, which I do not believe it can, the long-term physical and psychological effects are unknown." The research came to light in documents unearthed by the Sunshine Project, an organisation based in Texas and in Hamburg, Germany, that exposes biological weapons research. The papers were released under the US's Freedom of Information Act. One document, a research contract between the Office of Naval Research and the University of Florida in Gainsville, is entitled "Sensory consequences of electromagnetic pulses emitted by laser induced plasmas". It concerns so-called Pulsed Energy Projectiles (PEPs), which fire a laser pulse that generates a burst of expanding plasma when it hits something solid, like a person (New Scientist, 12 October 2002, p 42). The weapon, destined for use in 2007, could literally knock rioters off their feet. According to a 2003 review of non-lethal weapons by the US Naval Studies Board, which advises the navy and marine corps, PEPs produced "pain and temporary paralysis" in tests on animals. This appears to be the result of an electromagnetic pulse produced by the expanding plasma which triggers impulses in nerve cells. The new study, which runs until July and will be carried out with researchers at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, aims to optimise this effect. The idea is to work out how to generate a pulse which triggers pain neurons without damaging tissue ... The contract, heavily censored before release, asks researchers to look for "optimal pulse parameters to evoke peak nociceptor activation" - in other words, cause the maximum pain possible. Studies on cells grown in the lab will identify how much pain can be inflicted on someone before causing injury or death. New Scientist contacted two researchers working on the project. Martin Richardson, a laser expert at the University of Central Florida, refused to comment. Brian Cooper, an expert in dental pain at the University of Florida, distanced himself from the work, saying "I don't have anything interesting to convey. I was just providing some background for the group." His name appears on a public list of the university's research projects next to the $500,000-plus grant. John Wood of University College London, an expert in how the brain perceives pain, says the researchers involved in the project should face censure. "It could be used for torture," he says, "the [researchers] must be aware of this." Amanda Williams, a clinical psychologist at University College London, fears that victims risk long-term harm. "Persistent pain can result from a range of supposedly non-destructive stimuli which nevertheless change the functioning of the nervous system," she says. She is concerned that studies of cultured cells will fall short of demonstrating a safe level for a plasma burst. "They cannot tell us about the pain and psychological consequences of such a painful experience."

"A federal jury took four hours to clear a Miami jewelry supplier and his sales manager of charges they laundered more than $8 million in cocaine profits for Colombian drug lords. After Thursday's verdicts, jurors emerged from the Miami courthouse to find defendant Raphael Adouth, his family and members of his Bal Harbour synagogue rejoicing and dancing on the courthouse steps. They joined in with warm embraces.It was sweet," said defense attorney Howard Srebnick. Adouth and Lourdes Challiol were accused in an indictment last year of meeting with two dozen cocaine traffickers who exchanged drug money for gold, exporting it to Colombia. Adouth took over Rosenthal Jewelers Supply Corp. after the 1987 death of his grandfather, a Jewish watchmaker who emigrated from Hungary to Havana to Miami. The jewelry supply business, one of the nation's largest, also was acquitted of money laundering charges. The acquittals capped a three-week trial featuring some of Miami's top criminal defense attorneys, who vigorously attacked the motives and veracity of an undercover Internal Revenue Service operative. The defense alleged that anti-Semitism drove the investigation, telling jurors Adouth was referred to on surveillance tapes as "the Jew." The investigation itself was dubbed "Operation Goldstar," which defense attorneys said rekindled memories of how the Nazis forced Jews to wear gold stars."

"Edouard Stern, one of France's best-known bankers, has been found dead in his Geneva apartment, amid reports the Swiss police are treating his death as murder. Michel Graber, a Swiss investigating magistrate, is expected to make an announcement later today. Mr Stern, heir to one of France's biggest banking fortunes, had a high-profile and chequered career, which earned him a reputation as a highly ambitious and tenacious deal-maker who never backed down from a fight. The 50-year-old's body was found on Tuesday morning, according to AFP. Police are understood to be treating his death as suspicious. Mr Stern was once seen as the chosen successor to Michel David-Weill, chairman of the Lazard investment banking empire. Having married the eldest daughter of Mr David-Weill in 1983, Mr Stern joined Lazard. But his career at Lazard ended in acrimony and he quit in 1997 to set up his own $600m investment fund, with some financing from the Lazard investment vehicle Eurazeo ... Mr Stern hit the headlines recently at Rhodia, the French chemicals company. He spent a year on the company's board after investing heavily in it only to see the value of his investment collapse and he quit amid a financial crisis. After several years campaigning alongside other minority investors, he successfully ousted Jean-Pierre Tirouflet, Rhodia's former chief executive, who quit in 2003. The banker, who was a black-belt at judo and renowned as a poker player, was also understood to have been behind recent shareholder pressure by Knight Vinke of the US on Suez, the French utility, to split its power and water activities. Born into a wealthy Parisian family, Mr Stern was marked out from an early age for brilliance. But he dropped out after only a year at Science Politique, the training ground for the Parisian elite. He was known as a brilliant and charming man, but was criticised for arrogance. He ousted his father from the family bank at the age of only 22. He joined forces with other family members to take control of the bank, turned it around and eventually sold it to Libyan investors."

"The recent news that a part of Sing Sing, the New York State penitentiary that was home for a spell to Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, as well to as Murder, Inc., the Brooklyn-based gang of ruthless racketeers, is going to be transformed into a museum brings to mind an aspect of our past that many, undoubtedly, would prefer to forget. I'm referring, of course, to the sizable number of ne'er-do-wells (and worse) — those pickpockets, prostitutes, racketeers, thugs, gamblers and, yes, on occasion, even murderers — who, once upon a time, gave the chosen people a run for their money. Well into the late 19th century, it was widely believed almost as a matter of course that few black sheep could be found within the American Jewish community. "No other element is so orderly in character and so observant of the law," Philadelphia's Evening Telegram confirmed in 1872. "A Jew is seldom or never seen in our courts on a criminal charge." But that would soon change. By the 1890s, America's Jews, many of them recently arrived immigrants, increasingly ran afoul of the law. So much so, in fact, that municipal officials were often quick to associate the Jews with malfeasance. Worse still, Jewish women figured among those tarred by the charge of criminality, especially when it came to prostitution. "If a women called out to you as you walked down Allen Street," Judge Jonah J. Goldstein declared, referring to one of the Lower East Side's major thoroughfares, "you knew she wasn't calling you to a minyan." At first, American Jewry's leaders were hard pressed to accept this new and sordid reality. Running against the grain of Jewish history, these "unpleasant revelations," as the Jewish Messenger delicately put it, were initially dismissed out of hand as nothing more than the product of overheated, antisemitic imaginations. But little by little, as Jewish names took up more and more space in the criminal docket, giving rise to what one observer poignantly called the "brutality of statistics," the community had little choice but to reckon with the altered circumstances of life in the New World. Much as we might prefer to "live in the memory of the past when the ties of home and religion were stronger and our young less beset by temptation," the Israelite Alliance Review acknowledged. American Jews had now had to confront the issue head-on ... "As the Israeli government moves to eliminate the Jewish presence in Gaza and in four settlements in northern Shomron, opponents of its plan would do well to keep things in perspective ... The attempt to destroy Jewish communities in Yesha has brought to the surface a power struggle within Israel over the meaning of Zionism, the future of Israeli democracy and the importance of Jewish identity. Though deeply painful, the struggle can provide opportunities for an educational process that might eventually transform Israeli society, allow true democracy to flourish and liberate us from our Holocaust-based frame of reference. That, in turn, will give birth to a more relevant and vigorous Jewish and Zionist ethos. Well before the inception of the State of Israel, Palestine was seen as a national homeland and as a refuge for persecuted Jews. The Holocaust taught us that Jews could be slaughtered genocidally and no one would help. This gave rise to "Never Again," the imperative to protect ourselves. "Never Again" was essential to winning Israel's acceptance by the world; it was, for many, our raison d'etre. Today, however, it is inadequate to justify Israel's existence. In order for something new to emerge, there must be a shift in how we see the structure itself. Only when sacred myths about the state, its institutions and political parties and their leaders are challenged and the rot at the core of system itself is exposed can change occur. Many Israelis now realize that our system has evolved into one in which no one is accountable to any constituency. When political and economic power is concentrated, without checks and balances, it allows the system to be manipulated by the ruling elite for their own interests, masked by a fake "democracy" ... "Settlements" in the Land of Israel are the defining characteristic of the state's existence. Settling the land is not merely a political statement, but a historical imperative and a divine obligation. Indeed, the only reason the Land of Israel has value is because Jews live in and value it ... The challenge that the left presents, therefore, is an important and necessary ingredient in creating a renewed Zionist consciousness — one that goes back not to Herzl or the Holocaust, but to our Patriarchs, to the giving of the Torah, and to conquering and settling the land during the time of Judges, Prophets and Kings. If the destiny of the Jewish people can only be worked out in the Land of Israel, as most Israelis and all Zionists believe, then our claim to the land is not only political and historical, but also existential. The true meaning of Israel is not as a refuge for persecuted Jews, but as the dynamic fulfillment of prophetic visions, the ingathering of Jews and the rebuilding of the Land of Israel; it is part of the process of redemption. Every Jew, secular as well as religious, is part of that transcendent vision, a historical process embodied in every act of aliya and settlement. These are not only acts of physical relocation, but also of a spiritual commitment. They are, quite literally, why we are here ... This struggle is our obligation and privilege anchored in covenant, ingathering and redemption. It has nothing to do with what Arabs demand, what the international community desires or what the government decides. It has to do with the duty and destiny of the Jewish people in their homeland."

Another new candidate to emerge is Carly Fiorina, who lost her job as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard two weeks ago, the official said on condition of anonymity. Robert Zoellick, until last week the U.S. trade representative, had been the White House's candidate to replace James Wolfensohn, the current bank president, who completes his second five-year term in May. But when Zoellick was tapped to become the new deputy secretary of state, the White House reopened the bidding ... The administration declined to comment on the Wolfowitz candidacy, which was first reported in The Financial Times. By tradition, the United States names the head of the bank, while Europe names the director of the International Monetary Fund ... As one of the chief architects of the Iraq war, Wolfowitz is not among the favorites of some European nations. They could take a page from the United States and block Wolfowitz's nomination just as the administration of Bill Clinton in 2000 blocked the appointment of Caio Koch Weser, the German candidate to head the International Monetary Fund, as lacking the necessary strengths."

"Ken Livingstone has reignited his dispute with Britain's Jewish leaders by launching a provocative attack on the "war criminal" Ariel Sharon. In a riposte to criticism from the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the London mayor accused Israel of "ethnic cleansing" and said its prime minister should be imprisoned. He also accused Israel of demonising Muslims. Writing in the Guardian, he again rejected accusations of anti-semitism arising from his confrontation two weeks ago with the Jewish newspaper reporter he likened to a German concentration camp guard. But while stressing his steadfast opposition to racism and his regard for the Jewish people, he accused Israel of spreading misinformation about the scale of anti-semitism in Europe, and seeking to silence critics by calling them anti-semitic. Mr Livingstone said: "Israel's expansion includes ethnic cleansing. Palestinians who had lived in that land for centuries were driven out by systematic violence and terror aimed at ethnically cleansing what became a large part of the Israeli state." He added: "Today the Israeli government continues seizures of Palestinian land for settlements, military incursions into surrounding countries and denial of the right of Palestinians expelled by terror to return. "Ariel Sharon, Israel's prime minister, is a war criminal who should be in prison not in office. Israel's own Kahan commission found that Sharon shared responsibility for the Sabra and Shatila [Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut] massacre." Mr Livingstone said the Israeli government presented a "wholly distorted picture of racism and religious discrimination in Europe", so it appeared Jews suffered most discrimination. "The reality is that the great bulk of racist attacks in Europe today are on black people, Asians and Muslims. They are the primary targets of the extreme right." Relations between the mayor and key sections of the Jewish community are tense because of his clash with the Evening Standard reporter Oliver Finegold and his subsequent refusal to apologise, and his invitation to the Muslim cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi to speak at a conference in London last year. One of Mr Livingstone's most high-profile critics following the clash with Mr Finegold was Zvi Heifetz, the Israeli ambassador to London. He said last night: "The mayor is confused once again. Ethnic cleansing was perpetrated in the concentration camps which he should know being such an expert on them. The dozens of world leaders who attended the London meeting only two days ago [all commend Mr] Sharon, for his courageous steps to achieve peace in the Middle East." Commenting on the row with an article in Wednesday's Guardian, Henry Grunwald of the Board of Deputies said Mr Livingstone must reverse his stance and make amends, adding: "He has let us down. He has let his office down. Oliver Finegold deserves an apology, Holocaust survivors deserve an apology, the Jewish community deserves an apology and most of all, London deserves an apology. Then we can all move on." The [Jewish] Board of Deputies has triggered an investigation into Mr Livingstone's conduct by the local government watchdog, the Standards Board for England. A spokesman for the Board of Deputies last night accused Mr Livingstone of seeking to deflect attention away from his own behaviour by attacking Israel."

As mayor, I have pressed for police action over anti-semitic attacks at the highest level, and my administration has backed a series of initiatives of importance to the Jewish community, including hosting the Anne Frank exhibition at City Hall and measures to ensure the go-ahead for the north London eruv. Throughout the 1970s, I worked happily with the Board of Deputies in campaigns against the National Front. Problems began when, as leader of the Greater London Council, I rejected the board's request that I should fund only Jewish organisations that it approved of. The Board of Deputies was unhappy that I funded Jewish organisations campaigning for gay rights and others that disagreed with policies of the Israeli government. Relations with the board took a dramatic turn for the worse when I opposed Israel's illegal invasion of Lebanon, culminating in the massacres at the Palestinian camps of Sabra and Shatila. The board also opposed my involvement in the successful campaign in 1982 to convince the Labour party to recognise the PLO as the legitimate voice of the Palestinian people. The fundamental issue on which we differ, as Henry Grunwald knows, is not anti-semitism - which my administration has fought tooth and nail - but the policies of successive Israeli governments. To avoid manufactured misunderstandings, the policies of Israeli governments are not analogous to Nazism. They do not aim at the systematic extermination of the Palestinian people, in the way Nazism sought the annihilation of the Jews. Israel's expansion has included ethnic cleansing. Palestinians who had lived in that land for centuries were driven out by systematic violence and terror aimed at ethnically cleansing what became a large part of the Israeli state. The methods of groups like the Irgun and the Stern gang were the same as those of the Bosnian Serb leader Karadzic: to drive out people by terror. Today the Israeli government continues seizures of Palestinian land for settlements, military incursions into surrounding countries and denial of the right of Palestinians expelled by terror to return. Ariel Sharon, Israel's prime minister, is a war criminal who should be in prison, not in office. Israel's own Kahan commission found that Sharon shared responsibility for the Sabra and Shatila massacres. Sharon continues to organise terror. More than three times as many Palestinians as Israelis have been killed in the present conflict. There are more than 7,000 Palestinians in Israel's jails. To obscure these truths, those around Israel's present government have resorted to demonisation. Initial targets were Palestinians, and have now become Muslims. Take the Middle East Media Research Institute, run by a former colonel in Israeli military intelligence, which poses as a source of objective information but in reality selectively translates material from Arabic and presents Muslims and Arabs in the worst possible light. Today the Israeli government is helping to promote a wholly distorted picture of racism and religious discrimination in Europe, implying that the most serious upsurge of hatred and discrimination is against Jews. All racist and anti-semitic attacks must be stamped out. However, the reality is that the great bulk of racist attacks in Europe today are on black people, Asians and Muslims - and they are the primary targets of the extreme right. [JTR note: Livingston says this even as black French comedian Dieudonne M'Bala M'Bala is physically attacked by dual French/Israeli attackers - See below] For 20 years Israeli governments have attempted to portray anyone who forcefully criticises the policies of Israel as anti-semitic. The truth is the opposite: the same universal human values that recognise the Holocaust as the greatest racist crime of the 20th century require condemnation of the policies of successive Israeli governments - not on the absurd grounds that they are Nazi or equivalent to the Holocaust, but because ethnic cleansing, discrimination and terror are immoral. They are also fuelling anger and violence across the world. For a mayor of London not to speak out against such injustice would not only be wrong - but would also ignore the threat it poses to the security of all Londoners."

Even while conflict in the Middle East dominates the headlines, a unique collaboration between Arab and Israeli scientists, supported by two U.S. universities, is operating along the border between Jordan and Israel. Launched in 2004, the Bridging the Rift project includes 40 researchers from Israel, Jordan and the United States who are establishing the first scientific institute jointly operated by Israel and an Arab neighbor, according to a March 1 Stanford University press release. "My hope is that Palestinian universities in the West Bank and Gaza also will become involved," said Stanford biologist Marcus Feldman, the project’s academic director. "We've contacted Egyptian scientists and hope they will join as well." Stanford University in California and Cornell University in New York are academic partners in the bioscience research center jointly operated by Israel and Jordan. The center seeks to encourage the free exchange of ideas between Arab and Israeli scientists, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. "The extraordinary story of a Jewish-born SS officer who as the head of a Nazi labour camp saved and killed fellow Jews has stirred a new debate about wartime collaboration in the Baltic states and anti-Semitic currents in modern Germany. Fritz Scherwitz, according to a biography drawing on fresh archive material, was either an Oskar Schindler figure — protecting Jewish workers at the Lenta Camp outside Riga from certain death — or a skilled confidence trickster. “Was he a Schindler or a swindler?” asked Margis Vestermans, head of the Jewish Museum in Latvia. “That is the question that Jews, Latvians and Germans now have to answer for themselves." Scherwitz was born in 1903, the son (he later claimed) of a Jewish craftsman in the Baltic village of Buscheruni. He grew up speaking Yiddish, German and Russian. As a 17-year-old he joined the Freikorps and in 1933 became an early member of the SS. The Nazi troop did not investigate his family tree and accepted his “Aryan” credentials, backed up by references from Nazi colleagues. His village, he said, had been destroyed along with his birth certificate; in fact he may have invented the place. Scherwitz rose through the SS ranks and belonged to the notorious Einsatz Gruppe A2 which, with Latvian collaborators, murdered about 32,000 people — mostly Jews — near Riga in 1941. Scherwitz later denied that he was present at the massacre but the Nazis clearly trusted him to supervise a labour camp. Once installed he played off one section of the SS against another. Some 90 Jewish workers earmarked for liquidation were assigned by him to renovate SS villas and given life-saving identity papers. He converted the camp into a massive tailors’ workshop producing uniforms, evening gowns, stockings and silk underwear for the families and friends of the SS. As a result many Jews survived; the camp swelled to 900 inhabitants. Even so, he was in charge when Jews were deported to death camps. During the war he kept his Jewish identity secret. After the war, having fled to Bavaria, he hid his role in the camp but declared his origins to the American occupation forces, who allowed him to head a trust fund aimed at compensating Jewish victims. The German authorities did not investigate his war record too closely, being nervous that their wartime anti-Semitism would be exposed. In 1948, however, he was denounced and sentenced by a German court to six years’ jail for killing three people who tried to flee from his labour camp. The judges ruled that the punishment should be severe since “it was a reprehensible case of a Jew killing members of his own race”. The concealed anti-Semitism in this verdict is what prompted Anita Kugler, an author, to start a new trawl through the files. Gurgling sound during embalming process; real fluids in dead Pope’s body sucked out into jars. Doctors examining the body discover that the Pope was not only a woman, but also Hitler. Can’t move. Can’t reach penis. Throw a marble at the dead Pope’s head. Bonk! Catholic League president William Donohue released the following statement about this story today:

"There is a silent majority of Jews in the US who feel completely alienated from mainline Jewish groups because those groups are no longer in line with their central beliefs of justice and equality. Most Jews in the US are not affiliated with the institutions that purport to represent us. Never in American history have so many Jewish groups sprung up outside of the mainstream of the Jewish community, in defiance of the flawed leadership of our community ... Outside of Israel, most Jews are as secure as most other human beings.  However, the subjective experience of the millennia of persecution and genocide is quite another thing. Since my visit to Auschwitz last October, the constant fear that I and many other Jews live with has come to the surface of my consciousness. In some ways, my nightmares are a new phenomenon. But in reality, Auschwitz and the legacy of persecution and targeting that my family faced was always in my house as I grew up. No one talked about it, but you could feel it. A constant level of tension and anxiety that you wouldn't notice until you woke up with a stiff neck and sore muscles, not having any idea what you spent the night running from. I know this is a common experience for Jews. One of my Jewish friends wonders which neighbors will hide her children just in case there's a severe anti-Semitic outbreak. I've heard a number of Jews say that they think about having an extra suitcase packed, "just in case." My grandfather stocked our cabinets with pieces of bread wrapped in cloth, "just in case." Since most of us have yet to heal from the traumas we have endured, most Jews do not feel safe. And many Jews feel homeless, no matter their level of material stability.  We are prone to feeling and even acting as if the gas chambers in Auschwitz are still functioning. We're scared and ready to fight for our survival.  Anyone who had our history would be. Today, in Israel-Palestine, terrified, nuclear-armed Jews rule over 3 1/2 million Palestinians who live without any kind of representation in the government that controls the most mundane details of their day-to-day lives. Both peoples suffer, but who is the victim, and who is the oppressor? For every Israeli Jew killed in a suicide bombing, four Palestinians are killed by an Israeli tank, helicopter, or bulldozer—probably operated by a scared young Israeli. (I should say an American helicopter, since they're built by Boeing, and an American bulldozer, because they're built by Caterpillar.) Every day, Palestinians encounter scared Israeli soldiers at hundreds of Israeli checkpoints that choke Palestinian roads. Palestinians live in fear that their homes will be destroyed at any moment by a Caterpillar bulldozer, and human rights groups in Israel say that 95% of home demolitions have nothing to do with security.  Why am I here? Because we need help from you, our allies. Yes, we need you to understand how the oppression of Jews has led to oppression by Jews. We need you to cleave to us. But we also need you to help us stop.  Help us stop destroying Palestinian homes, subjecting Palestinians to random brutality, suppressing the liberty of another people. PCUSA's decision to investigate selective divestment from companies profiting from Israel's occupation is an important step in helping us to break that cycle of victim/oppressor. Many of those companies lobby our government for a warlike American policy towards Israel and Palestine. And at this moment, the Israeli economy is so heavily militarized that other industries, let alone programs to meet human needs, are neglected. Selectively divesting from the occupation means investing in brighter futures for Israelis and Palestinians ... The General Assembly made an incredibly brave and powerful and right decision by choosing to investigate selective divestment from the Israeli occupation. And the Presbyterian Church has been attacked since that decision was made. Cleaving to your Jewish brothers and sisters will not be comfortable now. It will not be easy. But don’t let go of us, and don’t let go of all that we’re capable of. The time is now – set the lamp on the stand. Stick to the decision that the GA made to investigate selective divestment from the occupation."

Shimoni, 35, was extradited from Canada on Thursday. He had been held by authorities there since October 2003, when he was arrested by police in Toronto. After he exhausted all his legal challenges to extradition, Shimoni was brought back to the United States by a federal marshal and an Ocean County Sheriff's detective and is currently being held on $1 million bail in Ocean County Jail ... Investigators matched fingerprints from the crime scene to Shimoni some six years later when he was arrested for a robbery in Los Angeles, where he jumped bail, Schroeder said. Police eventually identified the second suspect, Eyal Benyosef, who was then arrested in early 2001 in Queens, and indicted on robbery, carjacking, attempted kidnapping, escape and theft stemming from the crime in Toms River.
Benyosef violated bail after his arrest and is believed to be in Israel, Hodgson said."

"Given that the fire came from an American source I called in the American ambassador," Berlusconi told reporters. "I believe we must have an explanation for such a serious incident, for which someone must take the responsibility." The shooting occurred Friday at a roadblock near the airport. Berlusconi confirmed that the former Italian hostage, journalist Giuliana Sgrena, was injured by shrapnel. She was taken to a U.S. military hospital by U.S. troops, where she had a minor operation on her left shoulder to remove a piece of shrapnel, he said."

Malchin unmasked Israel Be'er, one of the top aides to then-Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, as a Soviet spy. He bugged a meeting of Arab League heads of states. He uncovered former Nazi scientists who had gone to work for Egypt in the 1950s. He battled Palestinian terrorism in Beirut. Even in retirement, he outdid active agents. During the '70s, he went to Brazil in search of Josef Mengele, the infamous Nazi doctor of Auschwitz. While there, he uncovered a Soviet agent who was bribing Brazilian army officers and buying U.S. Army materiel. "He asked me to notify the CIA," recalled Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau, who frequently used Malchin as a freelance investigator. "I said he didn't have enough evidence. So he went back and did a black-bag job on the guy — came up with his passport and his visa ... But Zvika, as he was known to his friends, was not some Hollywood stereotype of a secret agent. Malchin was an artist, whose stunning paintings — including a series of sketches done while he was interrogating Eichmann in Argentina — in recent years have been exhibited in leading museums around the world. (He divided his time between Israel, Florida and New York — he kept a studio here on the Lower East Side and lived in the East 30s.) "Was being a painter my cover story for the Mossad, or was being in the Mossad my cover story for being a painter? Sometimes, I'm not sure, he joked." (His art can be seen as peterzmalkin.com.) ... You couldn't help being hopelessly charmed by such a man; everyone who met him wanted to spend more time with him. His friends, and I was lucky to count myself as one for more than 25 years, were fiercely loyal. Last night, many of those friends gathered at the Park East Synagogue to say goodbye to a man who was literally a legend in his lifetime. Today, he is headed on his final journey back to Israel, the country and people he served so well."

"The public is confident that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon initiated the disengagement for the good of Israel, rather than because of the criminal investigations against him, but at the same time, a large majority believe that Sharon is corrupt. A special poll conducted for Haaretz on Sharon's fourth anniversary as prime minister finds that 48.6 percent of the public believe that Sharon initiated the disengagement based on "considerations of the good of the state," while 19 percent believe that Sharon had undergone a "real ideological change vis-a-vis the occupation." The poll was conducted by Dialog, supervised by Professor Camille Fuchs. Only 12.2 percent of the public believe the disengagement derived from Sharon's political situation at the time he announced it, according to the poll. A similar number, 12.4 percent, think the real reason for Sharon's conceiving the disengagement plan is the intense inquiries conducted at the time against Sharon and his sons ... These unequivocal data contradict another finding of the poll: that most people think Sharon is corrupt. The people interviewed were asked to choose an attribution characterizing Sharon from a few qualities. A large majority - 62 percent - chose the quality "corruption" as characterizing the prime minister. An overwhelming majority of Meretz voters - 84 percent - also replied that Sharon is corrupt."

"Israeli involvement in criminal activity in East Asian countries is causing serious damage to the country's image and could also threaten national security, Israeli consul in Tokyo Moshe Harel told Ynet. Some 30 Israelis are currently being held in Japanese prisons for various offenses, and a growing number of Israelis are involved in drug trafficking and selling forged passports in the country. Just two months ago two Iranians were caught with fake Israeli passports. According to Harel, this growing trend has increased Japanese authorities' fear of Israeli-initiated crime in the country, which in turn is making it harder for Israelis to enter Japan. As a result, every Israeli who arrives in Japan is regarded as a suspect and goes through a detailed interrogation. The passport trade phenomenon is not new to the Far East. This is mainly connected to the fact that many Israelis who remain in the country after their tourist visa expires report that their passport has been lost, whereby they receive a temporary document which they use to obtain an extended tourist visa ... Eight Israelis are currently being held or awaiting trial for drug-trafficking offenses, while some 20 others are being detained for offenses related to the illegal selling of paintings, gifts, or clothes out of street-market stalls - offenses that could bring a prison sentence of up to 4 years."

"A Jerusalem pub owner is under arrest for allegedly raping a 16 year-old during a job interview at the pub, police said Thursday. Alexander Gurevitch, 37, is suspected of intoxicating the teen, who had come to the 'Old Friend' pub in downtown Jerusalem for a job interview as a waitress, and then raping her at the pub. The suspected rapist was remanded by six days Thursday at the Jerusalem Magistrate's court. The rape case comes just one day after a city bus driver was arrested for allegedly raping a 28 year-old mother of eight on a city bus in Ramat Beit Shemesh."

The push by Israel comes at a sensitive time for NATO, which is seeking to establish stronger security and political ties in North Africa and the Middle East. As NATO explores a region in the throes of immense and unpredictable change, military experts said the alliance would have to tread carefully because some Middle Eastern countries see the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as an extension of U.S. military power. "In some Arab countries, Egypt for one, NATO is regarded with deep suspicion," said Thomas Papenroth, defense expert at the German Institute for International Policy and Security. "The alliance has to be very careful not to give the impression it is on the same side as the U.S., such as wanting regime change, or that it favors Israel over other countries." Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who last week became the first NATO secretary general to visit Israel, carefully sidestepped questions over the possibility that Israel would join the alliance ... Were it to join NATO, Israel would have the automatic right under Article 5 of the alliance's treaty to the security guarantee that a member state that came under attack would be assisted by other members if it sought such assistance ... "Edouard Stern, one of France's best-known bankers, has been found dead in his Geneva apartment, amid reports the Swiss police are treating his death as murder. Michel Graber, a Swiss investigating magistrate, is expected to make an announcement later today. Mr Stern, heir to one of France's biggest banking fortunes, had a high-profile and chequered career, which earned him a reputation as a highly ambitious and tenacious deal-maker who never backed down from a fight. The 50-year-old's body was found on Tuesday morning, according to AFP. Police are understood to be treating his death as suspicious. Mr Stern was once seen as the chosen successor to Michel David-Weill, chairman of the Lazard investment banking empire. Having married the eldest daughter of Mr David-Weill in 1983, Mr Stern joined Lazard. But his career at Lazard ended in acrimony and he quit in 1997 to set up his own $600m investment fund, with some financing from the Lazard investment vehicle Eurazeo ... Mr Stern hit the headlines recently at Rhodia, the French chemicals company. He spent a year on the company's board after investing heavily in it only to see the value of his investment collapse and he quit amid a financial crisis. After several years campaigning alongside other minority investors, he successfully ousted Jean-Pierre Tirouflet, Rhodia's former chief executive, who quit in 2003. The banker, who was a black-belt at judo and renowned as a poker player, was also understood to have been behind recent shareholder pressure by Knight Vinke of the US on Suez, the French utility, to split its power and water activities. Born into a wealthy Parisian family, Mr Stern was marked out from an early age for brilliance. But he dropped out after only a year at Science Politique, the training ground for the Parisian elite. He was known as a brilliant and charming man, but was criticised for arrogance. He ousted his father from the family bank at the age of only 22. He joined forces with other family members to take control of the bank, turned it around and eventually sold it to Libyan investors."

Sixty years on, the owners of a new luxury hotel in Obersalzberg, which opens this week, are hoping the area's serene natural charm can attract a different kind of visitor and open a new chapter in the area's blighted history. A glossy brochure presents "an oasis of well-being" where guests can indulge in spa treatments, have their ski boots warmed before use and play a round of golf. The hotel, part of the Intercontinental chain, wants to avoid advertising the fact that it is just a stone's throw from where Hitler's Berghof villa once stood, for fear of attracting the wrong sort of visitors. But nor does it wish to evade Obersalzberg's infamy altogether ... Despite assurances from the Bavarian state government that it will not tolerate any misuse of the area or "Nazi tourism," Jewish groups have attacked the project as historically insensitive. He said that instead, the reference to Nazis in a Senate speech on Tuesday was meant to underscore that the past should not be ignored. “Terrible chapters of history ought never be repeated,” Gavin said. “All one needs to do is to look at history to see how dangerous it is to curb the rights of the minority.” Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, said Wednesday that Byrd’s remarks showed “a profound lack of understanding as to who Hitler was” and that the senator should apologize to the American people. “It is hideous, outrageous and offensive for Senator Byrd to suggest that the Republican Party’s tactics could in any way resemble those of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party,” Foxman said ... "Sin City's flamboyant mayor was defiant and unapologetic Thursday regarding what he called "a maelstrom" of criticism for extolling gin to a class of fourth-graders. Mayor Oscar Goodman said he was just being himself when he told elementary school students that drinking was one of his hobbies and that the one thing he would want if stranded on an island is a bottle of gin. "I answered the question honestly and truthfully," Goodman told reporters during his weekly news conference. "I'm not going to lie to children. I'm not going to say I would take a teddy bear or a Bible or something like that, when that is not my first thought." Asked by a reporter if he had a drinking problem, Goodman answered, "Oh, absolutely not. I love to drink." Moments later, he cut off questions and walked out of the news conference. Goodman, a popular politician who has been mentioned as a possible candidate for governor, has never been shy about his love of gin. "Stop Her Now,” is the name of the new Web site soon to be launched by Arthur Finkelstein, the chief political guru of New York Governor George Pataki, and one of the country's most successful yet least known political consultants/spin doctors. The “Her” at StopHerNow.com is New York Senator Hillary Clinton. According to the New York Post, Finkelstein, the longtime master of the political attack ad, hopes the site will raise as much as $10 million from Hillary-haters across the nation and provide a gathering point for conservative activists working to defeat her in next year's Senatorial election. Hillary's defeat would likely derail any presidential aspirations she might have. The New York Post's Fredric Dicker has called Finkelstein “a secretive and sometimes controversial national GOP consultant who played a key role in Pataki's defeat of Gov. Mario Cuomo in 1994.” The Associated Press’ political writer Marc Humbert characterized Finkelstein as being “media-shy.” Nearly ten years ago, CNN's Jonathan Karl wrote of Finkelstein: “He is the stuff of Hollywood: A man who can topple even the most powerful foes, yet so secretive that few have ever seen him.” ... Finkelstein has had a long and colorful political career that has seen him work with some of the most reactionary politicians both at home and abroad. He runs Arthur J. Finkelstein & Associates, and during his thirty-year career he has worked for President Reagan and President Nixon. In addition to spearheading the then-little-known Pataki's 1994 victory over Mario Cuomo, he was also a top adviser to Alfonse D'Amato and Jesse Helms during their Senate careers. But he hasn't always led his clients to victory -- in 1996 he was a major, if well-hidden, consultant to Senator Bob Dole's losing presidential campaign. In addition, Finkelstein was also an early director of Terry Dolan's groundbreaking political operation, the National Conservative Political Action Committee (NCPAC). Finkelstein is an international player as well. According to AP's Humbert, “Finkelstein has been increasingly active is Israeli politics. He helped Benjamin Netanyahu during his 1996 campaign for prime minister and he is an adviser to the current Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon.” And, you can add one more element to Finkelstein's reality; he is gay, yet he's worked for a gaggle of gay-bashing Republican Senators including Lauch Faircloth (R-N.C.), Jesse Helms (R-N.C), Don Nickles (R-Okla.) and Sen. (Bob) Smith (R-New Hampshire), all of whom voted against legislation banning discrimination against gays while Finkelstein was working for them. Finkelstein is also Jewish, but that didn't stop him from using anti-Semitism during a 1978 South Carolina congressional race between Republican Carroll Campbell and Democrat Max Heller. A 1996 report published by the National Jewish Democratic Council summarized the story: “According to press accounts, Campbell commissioned a poll, conducted by the notorious GOP pollster Arthur Finkelstein, in which voters were asked their views of Campbell, who was described as ‘a native South Carolinian,’ and Heller, who was described as ‘a Jewish immigrant.’ The Campbell-Finkelstein poll also asked voters whether they approved or disapproved of U.S. aid to Israel, hardly a significant issue in the campaign except that it injected Heller's religion into the race and implied that, as a Jew, he would favor Israel over the U.S. Then just five days before the election, an independent candidate attacked Heller because Heller did not ‘believe in Jesus Christ.’ Heller lost by less than 6,000 votes. Years after the election it was revealed that there had been contact between the independent candidate and the Campbell campaign, leading some observers to believe that the independent candidate had entered the race at the behest of the Campbell campaign.” His non-political clients have included Time Magazine, Scott Paper, McDonalds, Quaker Oats and the Trump Organization ... Survivor puts experience in personal terms for students,

"On Jan. 18, Max Notowitz shared his life story with Heather O'Malley's geography class at Collierville Middle School. The class has recently been studying the Holocaust. Notowitz is 77 years old, and is a survivor of the Holocaust. He began telling his story with, "I was 12 years old when the Second World War broke out. I was in the fifth grade in Poland." Notowitz explained to us that the Nazis wanted to do away with Jews, Gypsies and people who were not of a certain origin. During this time, the Nazis closed the schools to Jews. Because of this, Notowitz was taken out of the fifth grade and sent to work cleaning houses. In the summer, he worked on building roads and railroads. In the winter he shoveled snow. In 1941, he lost his father, who was arrested and sent to a concentration camp called Auschwitz. More people were killed at Auschwitz than at any other concentration camp ... In my opinion, this experience was an honor. Notowitz's emotional story was both tragic and dramatic. I now realize the horror that the Holocaust prisoners went through. I am happy that I did not have to live through this terrible time period. Today, many teenagers take life for granted. I am very thankful and blessed to have had the opportunity to meet Max Notowitz."

"After witnessing more than three hours worth of cold-blooded atrocity yesterday, about 125 teenagers applauded the man who asked them to sit through it. Philip Weiss, a Winnipeg Holocaust survivor invited Springfield Collegiate's senior 1 students to a special screening of Schindler's List at Grant Park Cinemas yesterday. The film focuses on a concentration camp in Poland called Plaszow, where Weiss was once a prisoner ... "I am here because I have an obligation, an obligation to those who died and those who are still alive," he said. "What we want as survivors, we want you to know the truth. We want you to know the history." Weiss concluded by preaching tolerance ... While it may have been a tough lesson, it was a valuable one, teachers said. "It's important for the kids to know what happened. We do what we can so it doesn't happen again," said teacher Scott Faris. That's precisely why Weiss paid for the screening himself. "The pocket is not important," he said. "It's a new generation of young people who don't have that knowledge and my responsibility is to give them an understanding of that." Weiss, who held similar screenings when the film was released in 1993, will host five more schools today and Monday. The Manitoba Association of Rights and Liberties arranged the screenings for Weiss."

"How do you teach the legacy of the Holocaust without opening old wounds, yet still speak the plain truth? Artistic directors Wayne Brinda and Jonathan Rest consider that question as their respective theater companies -- Prime Stage and Jewish Theatre of Pittsburgh -- prepare productions that try to recapture the past to illuminate the present. The Jewish Theatre will open Israel Horovitz's "Lebensraum" next week. Tomorrow, Prime Stage opens a pair of one-act plays by Celeste Raspanti that deal with the painful history of a 16-year-old Holocaust survivor and her friends ... As part of a teaching fellowship for the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., Brinda has been assigned to create a national model for theater companies and schools on how to use the arts to teach the Holocaust. Through Prime Stage, his theater for adolescents and adults, Brinda will provide guidelines for lobby setup, scenery, rehearsals and research. He suggests students and teachers consult expert sources, and -- if possible -- talk directly to survivors. His challenge was to bring "the history and the literature of the Holocaust alive through theater," he says ... The Jewish Theatre's production of Horovitz's "Lebensraum," which Rest says could be called a "thought experiment," takes a different approach to the legacy of the Holocaust. "After the bodies were taken to the crematorium, the guards "would go home on leave, play with their little children, go to church and pray, and come back to continue the same evil over and over again," Holocaust survivor Jack Adler of Denver said Wednesday ... Speaking to a mostly student audience that jammed the University of Wyoming College of Agriculture auditorium, Adler said, "Adolf Hitler did not create anti-Semitism, nor did the Nazis. They were students of the anti-Semitism that had existed for many centuries." Hate groups are still thriving in many parts of the world, he told the students, and "it is up to you to make sure they never succeed." In his native Poland, he said, "the core of anti-Semitism survives," and he has "no desire to go back there" as long as it does ... Adler's speech was the first of three planned this semester as part of the UW Graduate School's Distinguished Speaker Series."

"The International Institute for Holocaust Research has been expanded and an International School for Holocaust Studies has been launched. As part of its upgrade, Yad Vashem has redoubled its efforts to videotape survivors’ testimonies and to collect and transfer Shoah-related documents from Europe ... Unlike the original Yad Vashem, which managed to convey the enormity of the Shoah, the new museum focuses more on the estimated 6 million Jewish individuals who lived and died through it. In an interview with The Jewish Week, Avner Shalev, chairman of Yad Vashem’s directorate and the new museum’s chief curator, stressed that the complex remains “first and foremost a Jewish museum.” Seated in his office where a photo of three IDF jets flying over Auschwitz sat on the ground waiting to be mounted, Shalev said that Yad Vashem is trying to counter the “growing phenomenon of universalizing the Shoah. People [abroad] talk more and more about human rights and crimes against humanity,” he said, forgetting that the Shoah was first and foremost an attempt to systematically wipe out the Jewish people. Unless the Jews are placed center stage in the Holocaust narrative, Shalev warned, “it might come to the point where the story will be told without Jews, or the Jews will be very marginal.”

The Holocaust in Color,

"Another major decision was to present the Holocaust in color. "The Holocaust has always been presented in black and white, and it was convenient for people to remember it that way," says Inbar. "It distanced it, disconnected it from the 20th century and Western civilization. But there was color in the photographs and in the camps. At that time, Jewish children were familiar with Disney characters, and they drew figures of Mickey Mouse and Sleeping Beauty on the walls of the camp. The adults used the figure of Mickey Mouse to explain to the children how to behave in the concentration camp. And none of this finds expression in the German photographs." None of this finds expression in the photographs at all, because very few Jews took pictures in the camps. But the color, like the daily routine, was documented in the numerous pictures drawn on scraps of paper or pages of books. These are not necessarily pictures drawn by reputed artists having considerable artistic value, but rather drawings that documented the difficult sights and the feelings of those who drew them. They all became important documents that enabled the completion of the missing picture. "Art has a very important place in the historic museum, and that is something that was not seen in Holocaust museums beforehand," explains Inbar. "We discovered that we had in our storehouses about 10,000 pictures from the Holocaust period that were exhibited in the past only in the context of art exhibitions." ... It would appear however that the museum is nevertheless making an effort to clearly distinguish fact from fiction, reality from imagination, art for art's sake from art that serves as a historical document, a testimony. It would appear that it was that clear distinction that caused Shendar not to note that two large, impressive photographs of a Polish forest and of Treblinka hanging in the historical display were taken by Sharon Yaari, a contemporary photographer who often digitally alters his photographs ... Peled-Carmeli adds that behind all these convincing explanations there is one fundamental rationale - the fear of Holocaust deniers. Heaven forbid an artifact should be discovered not to be authentic, a date to be incorrect. Everything must be original, thoroughly examined, impeccable. These artifacts were not displayed in the old museum ... [T]he endless volume of knowledge cannot change the basic feeling that accompanies the visitor to the museum: The more one tries to explain the Holocaust, the less it is possible to understand it." [JTR note: Um, false. Jews solicited hostility for centuries and received hostility in return, in the context of a World War. And now they insist upon mystifying history. It's all not hard to grasp, unless it is central to your identity NOT to understand it.]

Oscar's Jewish flavor is subtle this year,

"Jewish talent didn't make the headlines at Sunday evening's Academy Awards, but there was some consolation in the less-glamorous categories. Tom Rosenberg briefly shared the spotlight with Clint Eastwood as one of the three producers of best picture "Million Dollar Baby," which also collected Oscars in the best director, actress and supporting actor categories. Charlie Kaufman, the favorite, won the best original screenplay Oscar for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." After what he calls a "normal Jewish upbringing" on Long Island, Kaufman has become one of the hottest Hollywood writers, turning out scripts that tend to blur the line between fantasy and reality. In the documentary feature category, often dominated by Holocaust-related themes, the winner was "Born Into Brothels," a story about the children of Calcutta prostitutes. Sharing the award were director Zana Briski, whose Iraqi Jewish mother now lives in Israel, and her Jewish co-producer, Ross Kauffman. Jorge Drexler, whose parents immigrated to Uruguay from Europe, earned the best original song Oscar for "Al Otro Lado Del Rio" from "The Motorcycle Diaries." Drexler, who reportedly lived in Israel for a time, now lives in Spain. African-American comedian Chris Rock, the evening's host, turned down his normally edgy nightclub routine for the occasion. But he pricked up some ears in a bit about "The Passion of the Christ" when he observed that "A lot of Jewish people were offended" by the film. "They were mad about it." As a follow-up, Rock commented, "I can relate to that. I had to deal with a movie called 'Soul Plane'" - a lame comedy about a one-plane airline run by blacks that was panned for its black stereotypes. Mel Gibson's "The Passion" was nominated for its cinematography, makeup and original score, but failed to win a single Oscar.
Three Jewish veterans of the movie industry were honored by appreciative audiences. Sidney Lumet, the director of such memorable films as "Twelve Angry Men," "Network" and the Jewish-themed "The Pawnbroker" and "Bye Bye Braverman," accepted a lifetime achievement award ... Veteran film and television executive Roger Mayer received the Jean Hershholt Humanitarian Award for his work on behalf of film preservation and the motion picture retirement home. British film veteran David Samuelson appeared via video to accept a technical award for his invention, a revolutionary camera-mounting device. Jewish hopes for an acting award rode on the best supporting actress category. Among the five finalists were Natalie Portman for "Closer" and Sophie Okonedo for "Hotel Rwanda." Portman, born in Jerusalem and equally fluent in English, Japanese and Hebrew, has just completed a semester at the Hebrew University after graduating from Harvard University with a degree in psychology. She is now before the cameras in the Israeli film "Free Zone" by Amos Gitai. Okonedo, a well-known British actress, is the daughter of a Jewish mother and a Nigerian father ... Among the last to appear on the stage at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, showing up in the final moments of the broadcast, which ran slightly over three hours, were Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand. The two stars, who play a free-spirited Jewish couple in the comedy "Meet the Fockers," introduced the best-picture nominees and winner in an oddly absent-minded and ditzy shtick."

"Director Sidney Lumet, 80, will receive a lifetime achievement Oscar on Feb. 27. While Lumet is most famous for huge hits like “Dog Day Afternoon,” he also made “The Pawnbroker,” still one of the most gripping Holocaust films and “Bye, Bye, Braverman,” a comedic gem about Jewish intellectuals. Lumet will discuss “The Pawnbroker” in the AMC cable documentary, “Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust,” premiering April 5. The humanitarian award this year goes to Roger Mayer, the president of Turner Entertainment. As well as being active in film charities, he’s a major donor to the United Jewish Welfare Fund. Competing for the best short documentary award is “Sister Rose’s Passion,” a riveting film about an elderly New Jersey nun who has battled anti-Semitism for decades. The Oscar-nominated director is Oren Jacoby (his filmmaker father is Jewish and was nominated 46 years ago in the same category). Meanwhile, in the best long documentary category is “Born into Brothels,” about the children of Calcutta prostitutes. “Born” recently opened in the Bay Area to raves. The director is Zana

"Do I fit the profile of a female terrorist? The thought momentarily crossed my mind when I was singled out for an intensive search by Israeli security at Ben Gurion International Airport. Travelling alone, female, running late for the plane. Fits the picture. The New Zealand-Israel trade delegation had stumped up a US$150 fee to get me "VIP pre-clearance". This wasn't on the script. Just that morning VIP officials told me not to bother arriving at the airport until 90 minutes before the 8.15am flight.
They met me at a special gate well away from the Israeli Defence Force soldiers with their automatic weapons. But they stood silently to one side while young, tough-as-nails security women challenged me over why I had not turned up three hours before departure. Had it escaped them that I was the only person in the VIP queue - and not by chance? All my belongings were pulled from their bags. Why have I got Bill Clinton's book? they asked. "I've just interviewed him in London." And he's cool about the security wall, I murmur, sotto voce. Clinton gets the x-ray. Who packed your suitcase? Where have you been in Israel? Who can vouch for you? "Here's Michael Ronen's card (Israel Foreign Affairs), call him - he knows who I am. His ministry's been showing me around." They don't do that and by now the game is clear.
Yes, I am a single woman. No, I haven't been seduced by a Palestinian into carrying a bomb on board, I murmur (under my breath, this time). The laptop, phone cables and spare batteries for my digital tape recorder are simply tools of the trade. Was I going to head for the toilet, make a bomb, blow my BA flight out of the sky? The male boss from Shin Bet disappears with the laptop. He's gone 30 minutes. Five security people are now questioning me. On it goes. Yes, I am a journalist with the New Zealand Herald (you know that). Where have you been in Israel? Dead Sea, Lebanon border, Golan Heights, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv. Yes, I've strayed on to the West Bank several times. And yes, I've been covering the passports story. I had gone to Israel for an "educational" visit and stayed on to file more reports when the passports affair took a surprising twist."
