"In an unusual encounter by the standards of interfaith dialogue, Orthodox rabbis and a candidate to be the next pope met this week at an interfaith conference in New York. Organized by the World Jewish Congress, the conference drew rabbis from across the Jewish religious spectrum and Jewish and Catholic religious leaders from six continents, including Cardinal Angelo Scola of Venice, considered to be among a handful of frontrunners to succeed Pope John Paul II. The meeting, held at New York's Holocaust museum, focused on building alliances against the twin enemies of religious Catholics and Jews: secularism and religious extremism, specifically Islamic fundamentalism. "In terms of major threats of the 21st century on us, we have more in common than what separates us," said Rabbi Eugene Korn, director of Jewish affairs at the American Jewish Congress. "On the political level, it's vitally important for Jews and Catholics to form an alliance against extremists." Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum, of a Reform temple on Long Island, said attendance by such high-level Catholic clergymen reflected the importance the bishops ascribe to Catholic-Jewish ties. "In these last moments of the pope's reign, it reflects his mission to heal the rift, the pain and the hurt inflicted upon the Jewish people by the Catholic Church, and to have us as partners engaged in the essential work of tikun olam [repairing the world]," he said ... The Jewish agenda was more political than theological. "My interest is getting them to support us on anti-Semitism and on joint projects and on principles that they have changed their attitude on," Singer said. "They really have taken [positive] steps at the same time that the World Council of Churches is dealing with divestment on Israel. This is not a time when we can afford to reject the people who are cooperating with us." The Jews spoke about the need for the Catholics to be more vocal in their support of Israel and condemnation of anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism, particularly in the face of Islamic extremism. The Catholic prelates spoke proudly of the pope's record on Israel, citing his visit to Jerusalem and his embrace of Vatican-Israel ties as signs of Catholic support for the Jewish state."

Court upholds rabbi's bribery conviction,

"Last Sunday saw the end of a very unsavory affair in the history of the religious establishment. The Tel Aviv District Court rejected the appeal by the former Sephardi chief rabbi of Ramat Gan, Yitzhak Barda, and upheld his conviction for accepting a bribe in return for conversion. In 2003 Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court Judge Daniel Beeri convictedBarda on three counts of taking a bribe from women who wanted to convert. The offenses dated from the beginning of the 1990s, when Barda headed a special religious court for conversion. Two of the women paid $2,000 each, and the money was handed over through a go-between, Ava Tsror. Barda's punishment was relatively light for bribery: six months in prison and another year on probation. The judge took into account the fact that the indictment had been submitted five years after the investigation had been completed and nine years after the offenses were committed, as well as of the fact that Barda had resigned from his position ... Barda joins three senior rabbis who were convicted of grave offenses during the past decade: The head of the Tel Aviv Rabbinical Court, Rabbi Haim Pardess, who committed indecent acts; the rabbi of Afula, Rabbi Peretz Zioni, who was convicted of taking a bribe for a kashrut certificate; and the rabbi of Beit She'an, Rabbi Eliyahu Cohen, who accepted a bribe to turn a blind eye to the marketing of unkosher meat. Zioni, incidentally, is still serving in his position, and only some of his authority was taken away from him."

"After complaining that a senior rabbi harassed her, a settlement resident becomes an outcast They warned her mother that her sisters' chances of a good match would be damaged, claims B.G. They tried to turn her brother and her husband's family against her. Over 100 rabbis, she says, including at least three candidates for the post of chief rabbi, signed notices that appeared in newspapers calling her a liar. Speeches have been made denouncing her, she claims, while Rabbi Moshe Bleicher, head of the Shavei Hebron Yeshiva, has published an article saying she suffers from mental illness and from hallucinations.
This is only part of the degradation B.G., a settlement resident, has suffered since a newspaper interview five months ago in which she alleged that she had been the victim of "improper behavior of a sexual nature," as she puts it, on the part of Beit El rabbi, Shlomo Aviner, who also heads the Ateret Cohanim Yeshiva. A second woman also alleged in the same interview that Aviner had sexually harassed her, both physically and verbally, and that she had been forced to move away. "The mask of abuse and scheming that we lifted simply astounded us - 123 rabbis claimed that the two women were crazy and liars without knowing a thing about them, just because of what Rabbi Aviner and Rabbi Bleicher said," says Hannah Kahat, head of "Kolech" ("Your Voice") a forum for religious women that seeks to improve their status within the community. The mass mobilization of the rabbinical institution to defend Rabbi Aviner has been coupled with a campaign not meant merely to silence the allegations, but also to eject these women from their community. Their full names have been diffused throughout the settlements along with supposed details of their lives. B.G. felt like she had been backed into a corner. The two women filed a complaint with the police, but it was made clear to them that in this case, the matter was only borderline on the criminal. Even their appeals to a number of top rabbis, including Mordechai Eliahu, former Sephardi chief rabbi, were rejected."

"In its 183-year history, the august Oxford Union debating society has heard the wisdom of Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan and Mother Teresa. But until now, its members have yet to hear from anyone with quite the same resume as Ron Jeremy, star of 1,700 adult films, including "Bang Along With Ron". "As far as I know it is the first porn star to address the Oxford Union. I'm 99 percent sure of that," Peter Cardwell, spokesman for one of the English-speaking world's most respected debating societies, told Reuters. Jeremy, who claims to have slept with more than 4,000 women, will address the union on Wednesday, joining many British prime ministers, three U.S. presidents and political figures from the Dalai Lama to Malcolm X in its archival guest list. "Ron is the biggest and apparently the best in the business, so I'm sure he'll have some fascinating stories to tell," said Oxford Union librarian Vladimir Bermant, who organised the event." Former minister Segev admits attempting to smuggle drugs,

"Former energy minister Gonen Segev admitted Sunday morning to charges of attempting to smuggle some 32,000 ecstasy pills from the Netherlands and forging his diplomatic passport. Segev, who had long refuted the accusations, admitted to the charges as part of a plea bargain under which he will get five years imprisonment and a $27,500 fine which will be transferred to the Israel Anto-Drug Authority. Segev has been behind bars since his arrest in the Ben Gurion International Airport in April 2004 over involvement in an alleged international Ecstasy drug smuggling scheme that Israeli and Dutch police said involved millions of shekels.
Segev and his two alleged accomplices, Moshe Verner and Ariel Friedman, were charged in May 2004 with plotting to smuggle drugs. Verner committed suicide by hanging himself in his prison cell last November. Segev's attorneys tried to convince court that he was unaware of the contents of the M&M candy packets he had received from the Netherlands which he was supposed to import to Israel. During his trial, Segev was also charged with attempting to fraudulently receive NIS 20,387 and with credit card fraud, all under aggravated circumstances."

The assemblage would give Africa-Israel Investments the ability to significantly shape the future of downtown Miami as it shifts from commecial districts to one crowded with high-rise condominium towers. "We're talking aobut millions of square feet here -- probably a million and a half," said Edie Laquer, the commercial broker who helped put together the deal. The land package comprises downtown real estate both prime and shabby. Much of the assemblage comes from Hank Sopher, the parking log magnate who bought up vacant land west of Biscayne Boulevard in the late 1990's. That was before a historical real estate boom sent property values soaring and lured residential developers into downtown ... [T]he $1 billion price age is roughly equal to the cost of the 18-block stretch of seven high-rise towers planned at Midtown, said Otto Boudet-Murias, an aide to Miami Mayor Manny Diaz for economic developlment. "Lebanon lies above the Galilee, where many New Zealanders have come to build a new nation. The "passports affair" has been a point of anguish for some of these expatriates, as for others living in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. They have been rocked since Prime Minister Helen Clark slapped sanctions against their new home after two Israeli agents were caught trying to obtain a New Zealand passport ... A leading Christchurch-born figure on Kibbutz Yizrael says he would lend spies his own passport "if they wanted it". Shimon Zelas is quick to add he has not done so. Israel's security agencies commonly "borrow" passports from smart, bilingual young Israelis with dual nationalities. "I know instances where friends have had their passports taken for two months, three months and come back with all sorts of stamps in them," says South African-born security analyst Hirsh Goodman. But another former Mossad official says such "passport farming" is becoming more difficult as countries introduce biometric identification in the wake of growing international terrorism ... The passports affair, or "the scandal" as it has become known, was common currency at a Knesset luncheon. Labour MP Issac Herzog, whose father is a former President of Israel, deplores the attempted use of New Zealand identities. He heads the Knesset's Australia and New Zealand Friendship Committee and wants relations to be mended as soon as possible. A line had been well sewn in advance that Clark had played the affair for all it was worth. "She is facing election and just wants to push the Maori issues off the front-page," was the refrain. Another charge was that New Zealand was focused on its meat trade in the Middle East and did not want to help Israel out by keeping the affair quiet because of growing ties with Arab nations. But the affair is more complex than that. The issue of the "Sayanim" - Jews who assist Israel in its undercover activities in foreign territories - has now been raised. Herald inquiries disclose that Aucklander Tony Resnick - believed by New Zealand police to be the "fourth man" in the passports affair - frequently stayed at Kibbutz Yizrael in the 1990s. Resnick fled New Zealand the day after the two Israeli agents were apprehended. Kiwis the Herald spoke to believe he is at the kibbutz now. Shimon Zelas describes Resnick as a "very good man". "He used to come here and visit his cousin a lot but never formally joined the kibbutz." At the time, Resnick worked with the Star of David ambulance service. In New Zealand, he is suspected as the spotter who identified the young cerebral palsy sufferer whose passport the agents tried to obtain. One New Zealand-born Israeli suggests that giving information about paraplegics is "not a major crime" ... Goodman says the spy agency probably ran a passports factory in Israel as well. "Good move by Mossad ... The damage to Israel is primarily in getting caught." But Foreign Affairs Minister Phil Goff is unhappy that Resnick took flight. "He was, of course, a New Zealand citizen and possibly still has family in New Zealand. 'It is possible that the police will require him to return to New Zealand for questioning." What grates with Goff are statements by an Auckland Jewish Council member suggesting Resnick could not have been part of the affair. Goff challenges the council to call on Resnick to come back and talk to police. His bigger beef is the absence of any condemnation by the council of the Israeli agents' actions. "I would have expected people to have been quite straightforward - to say we don't condone anyone coming to this country and committing acts that are against the law, particularly those that undermine our sovereignty and the integrity of our travel documents ... For those who are claiming this has nothing to do with the Israeli intelligence agencies - [the agents] are just common criminals who happen to be Israelis - then I'm amazed that they have any criticism of the treatment they have received." Expatriate New Zealanders in Israel certainly want the affair resolved. Jon Boock and his wife, Marion, have lived in Tel Aviv for many years ... (Goff was also caught up in the fervour of the new nation, going to Israel in the 1970s to work on a kibbutz.) Nathan now runs the NZ Israel Trade Association, which is in turn funded by the Australia New Zealand Israel Chamber of Commerce. He has brought a number of thinkers and intellectuals to New Zealand in recent times. "An Auckland company [that] refused an export licence to send military-style laser harnesses to Israel's Ministry of Defence may be asked to explain if it has sent the technical knowledge to make the training equipment. Customs officials have confirmed to the Herald that they are studying leaked documents which question whether the company, Oscmar International, has complied with laws restricting the export of military goods and technology. Last year Oscmar was twice refused a licence to export the actual harnesses, but it is unclear if exporting the information needed to make the harnesses would be banned. The documents say the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) rejected Oscmar's application because of the potential for the export to contribute to regional conflict. The ministry also cited a provision which means a licence can be turned down because of the recipient country's record in international humanitarian law and the law of armed conflict. The final decision, taken in June, came "after extensive consultation within the Government", MFAT said. Oscmar's applications coincided with publicity surrounding the arrest of two suspected Mossad agents caught trying to obtain a false New Zealand passport. A summary of the documents has been posted on the internet by the non-government organisation, Network Opposed to Weapons and Related Production. They suggest that after being denied an export licence, Oscmar investigated sending its parent company in the United States the technical know-how to manufacture the laser detection harnesses, which were to be used by the Israeli Defence Force for training ... Oscmar's website says the company is a leading supplier of defence training systems internationally."

RUSSIA, U.S. JEWRY TEAM UP AGAINST ANTI-SEMITISM,

"The Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS (FJC) and the American Jewish Congress (AJC) signed a memorandum of mutual understanding in Moscow Tuesday. Speaking at a news conference after the signing ceremony, FJC President Lev Levayev described the Memorandum as an historic document, one proving that Russia is on the path toward democracy and religious freedom. As Mr Levayev pointed out, there has been a vibrant Jewish community life across Eurasia in recent years ... The Memorandum identifies priority areas of cooperation between the two organizations, including protection of the civil and religious rights of Jews, concerted efforts to fight anti-Semitism and xenophobia, consolidation of international and interregional cooperation, and development of Russo-Israeli and Russo-American relations. One of the first collaborative projects will be the arrangement of a visit to Russia by several Senate delegations, Mr Levayev said. He hopes that here, Senators will be able to see for themselves that the Jackson-Vannick Amendment is absolutely irrelevant today. The U.S. Congress passed the amendment in 1974 to prevent trade with the former Soviet Union, which had restrictive emigration policies, most notably vis-a-vis Jews. The USSR is no more, but this legislative act is still in force ... Mr. Rosen said his organization was more than willing to share with the FJC its expertise in providing legal defense for community members, including in cases related to anti-Semitic bigotry and hate crimes. The officials attending the news conference all spoke with one voice as they pointed out the inadmissibility of rewriting history, specifically the history of the Holocaust. Mr. Rosen expressed satisfaction with the fact that this topic was now being introduced to the Russian school curriculum. He had learnt the news from Culture & Education Minister Alexander Sokolov. The Jewish officials also spoke against the erection of monuments to Nazis and collaborators with the Nazi regime. David Twersky, Vice President for PR in the AJC, cautioned Latvia, as well as the other two Baltic nations that used to be part of the USSR, against equating Nazism with Stalinism. One other issue of mutual concern is acculturation. According to statistics cited by Mr. Rosen, about 50 percent of the American Jews have assimilated into the predominant culture. Jewish officials in Russia share concerns over the danger of complete acculturation. As Chief Rabbi Berl Lazar of Russia said, the FJC tries hard to tackle this problem, both in the CIS and beyond. Thus, for instance, Mr. Levayev runs a network of Jewish schools for Russian-speaking Jewish immigrants in the States."

Ukraine tycoon funds documentary about Holocaust,

"A Ukrainian tycoon will team up with Steven Spielberg to produce a documentary about Holocaust victims in Ukraine, an official from a Holocaust foundation said Tuesday. Viktor Pinchuk, a coal and steel magnate, and Spielberg will be co-executive producers of a documentary about the Holocaust in Ukraine based on more than 3,000 videotaped interviews of survivors and witnesses, said Douglas Greenberg, the director of the Shoah Visual History Foundation based in Los Angeles. "Mr. Pinchuk is funding it,'' Greenberg said in a telephone interview. Spielberg's office was not immediately available for comment. Pinchuk's spokesman Laurent Dondey has said that the wealthy businessman, who is a prominent member of Ukraine's Jewish community and is a son-in-law of former President Leonid Kuchma, "is involved in the making of the movie.'' "He will co-produce it,'' he said."

Capitol Rotunda likely site of May 5 Holocaust ceremony,

"The annual Holocaust Days of Remembrance ceremony is likely to take place once again in the Capitol Rotunda, after the House yesterday passed a resolution approving the location. House Administration Committee Chairman Bob Ney (R-Ohio), who sponsored the bill, emphasized the need for the May 5 ceremony to take place in the “very sacred center of the Capitol” because of “the significance of this particular location and its significance and importance in this building.” The Senate is also expected to pass the legislation. The ceremony is part of a weeklong tribute to Holocaust survivors. The theme this year will be “From Liberation to the Pursuit of Justice,” in memory of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the subsequent prosecution of war criminals under international law during the Nuremberg trials. On Jan. 27, Vice President Cheney joined world leaders in Poland to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Martin Goldman, director of survivor affairs for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, said the impact of the ceremony on the Holocaust survivors is tremendous. “Survivors come from all over the country,” he said. “It is moving and touching when they go to [the event] and tears are in [their] eyes.” Goldman said that survivors are touched that the memorial is in the Rotunda of the nation’s Capitol ... Over the past five years, speakers at the ceremony have included President Bush, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell and then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice. This year’s keynote speaker has yet to be determined, said Andrew Hollinger, director of media relations for the Holocaust museum." [Rational, moral human beings do not "revere" the great Jewish Pity Party towards further power. Jews routinely "trivialize" the tens of millions of non-Jews who died in World War II. "Dear Ariana Schanzer: I hope you won't mind being called out like this. It's just that I saw your picture last Monday in The Miami Herald and it made me want to talk to you. In the photo, you're smiling a giddy smile, dancing cheek to cheek with this equally delighted older man who looks to be about 60 but who is, the caption tells us, actually 90 years old. Which makes your grandfather, Samuel Schanzer, exactly 80 years older than you. It would have been a touching image under any circumstances, but the thing that made it stand out for me is that it was taken at a reunion of Holocaust survivors. It occurred to me, Ariana, that you are a blessing your grandfather would have found too absurdly wonderful to hope for back when he was young and the world was burning down around him. You are a miracle he would not have known how to dream ... I'm concerned about what has become of the Holocaust in recent years, Ariana. It's not just the people who deny it ever happened that I refer to, though heaven knows that bunch is scary enough. To the degree anyone can erode the hard edge of historical certainty, to the degree the Holocaust can be made a ''controversy,'' they spit on ashes and bones and make themselves thieves of legacy. It showed a bearded man sitting on the edge of an open kitchen stove. The caption read, ''Knock a Jew In The Oven! Three Throws For a Dollar.'' The headline said, ''Holocaust Remembrance Week.'' And I'm thinking of the people who say they don't care about the Holocaust because it happened to other people in other places at another time ... Remember that when people try to make the Holocaust abstract, Ariana. Remember, when they try to make it absurd. Remember the warmth of your grandfather's cheek against yours, remember how small your hand was in his. "The media storm created by Ken Livingstone's remarks to the London Evening Standard reporter Oliver Finegold finally seems to be abating. I empathise with those who feel that it is time to "move on". However for me, as the elected leader of the British Jewish community, moving on is not that simple. I wish it were ... It is worth remembering exactly what happened. After a reporter clearly identified himself as Jewish, the mayor responded with a remark deliberately calibrated to cause maximum pain and offence. Ken has stubbornly refused to apologise for the hurt he caused, despite being called upon to do so by just about everybody in public life. This has highlighted the almost total lack of accountability of the elected mayor to the London assembly. If we are to move on, then Ken must also move on, beyond what seems to be a blind spot in his dealings with the Jewish community. Ken is sincere when he states that he regards the Holocaust as the worst crime of the last century. Using the Holocaust as a moral reference point can be a force for good, but the mayor's record in this regard is lamentable. His Holocaust comparisons are premised upon his own political prejudices, rather than any objective study of human suffering and deliberate industrialised mass murder ... By employing Holocaust imagery to address an insult to somebody who identified himself as a Jew, the mayor overstepped the bounds of acceptable behaviour for an elected official. That is the core of our complaint. The hurt was compounded by his subsequent refusals to apologise for the offence and furore that inevitably followed. What is the option for the Jewish community - to remain silent when the Holocaust is trivialised before the last survivors are even dead? We are repeatedly told that Ken is a steadfast opponent of anti-semitism. He certainly hates the swastika and jackboots variety, because that fits his world-view. But the sad truth is that there are other, more modern variants that he simply ignores. His recent mayoral submission to the House of Commons home affairs select committee inquiry into terrorism and community relations mentions many forms of prejudice but makes no reference to anti-semitism - despite two previous Jewish communal appeals to him regarding the wave of anti-semitic violence and terrorism that Jews worldwide have endured since 2000. Similarly, the mayor has made no mention of this month's statistics that showed that the British Jewish community suffered a 41% escalation in anti-semitic incidents during 2004. Is this another example of the mayoral blind spot? Ken has quoted polls to claim the support of Londoners, as if we should take a perverse comfort that debating Holocaust metaphors has become this week's media hype ... There is deep anger in the Jewish community, not just at the remarks themselves, but at the manner in which the mayor has dragged us through this controversy, continually ascribing our legitimate concerns to media campaigns and attempts to secure political gain. The mayor's carefully crafted statements and rebuttals throughout this episode have had another effect. They have made the Jewish community feel tense, isolated, humiliated and a target for insults. Members of our community have received hate mail and been accused of hijacking the media as a result of expressing our concerns. Most shocking of all, the Guardian reported an an allegation made in City Hall about a Jewish primary school pupil being called a Nazi by another child. When challenged by his teacher the child claimed to be following the example set by the mayor. This is the real danger of simply moving on ... Without appropriate closure this saga will leave a lingering stain on Ken Livingstone's tenure as mayor. He has let us down. He has let his office down. Oliver Finegold deserves an apology, Holocaust survivors deserve an apology, the Jewish community deserves an apology and most of all, London deserves an apology. "A German judge ordered white supremacist Ernst Zundel held in jail after arraigning him Wednesday on charges of denying the Holocaust and inciting hatred. Zundel, who was deported from Canada on Tuesday, made no statement at the closed arraignment in the southwestern city of Mannheim, court spokesman Ulrich Krehbiel said. German prosecutors accuse Zundel of decades of anti-Semitic activities, including repeated denials of the Holocaust -- a crime in Germany. Prosecutors obtained an arrest warrant for him in 2003. Because Zundel's Holocaust-denying Web site is available in Germany, he is considered to be spreading his message to Germans. Canadian authorities deported Zundel, 65, after a federal judge ruled that his activities were a threat to national and international security. Born in Germany in 1939, Zundel emigrated to Canada in 1958 and lived in Toronto and Montreal until 2001. Canadian officials rejected his attempts to obtain citizenship in 1966 and 1994. He moved to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., until he was deported to Canada in 2003 for alleged immigration violations. Zundel has operated Samisdat Publishing, a leading distributor of Nazi propaganda, since the 1970s. Over the past decade, he has been a key content provider for a Web site dedicated to Holocaust denial. Canadian authorities had held him in solitary confinement since 2003 while determining whether they had grounds to deport him. Zundel has claimed he is a peaceful man with no criminal record against him in Canada. The group's Australian director, Bob Mendelson, complained yesterday that his car tyres had been slashed in Sydney and a Jews for Jesus billboard depicting a Holocaust survivor had been vandalised in Caulfield. Meanwhile, Jewish leaders accused the group of "preying on the weak and vulnerable". The Jewish Community Council of Victoria circulated a letter calling Jews for Jesus shameless and warning Jews not to "engage with them". Mr Mendelson said that Jews for Jesus had handed out 39,000 booklets in Melbourne last week and met a "steady increase in hostility". "The desecrated billboard is a holocaust survivor trying to say, 'Hear my story'. The vandals cut parts out and wrote "remember" in Hebrew," he said. "I think most Jews would deplore this." Mr Mendelson said Jews for Jesus was not just targeting Jews. "Making the Gospel known, that's the point," he said ... Paul Gardner, chairman of the (Jewish) Anti-Defamation League, yesterday said the campaign was "trying to undermine Judaism and is clearly rejected by the Jewish community". He said it was impossible to be Jewish and Christian at the same time."

"Guilty pleas made in case against Belarusian enterprise now total nine. Two Belarusians have pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court to running a Minsk-based child pornography and money-laundering enterprise, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced February 28. They each face a prison term of between 25 and 30 years in federal prison under terms of their plea agreement. Seven others have already pleaded guilty in the U.S. government’s case against Regpay, while more than 1,200 subscribers to Regpay-affiliated child pornography Web sites have been arrested in the United States and around the world, according to ICE. Regpay, a global Internet pornography business that had thousands of paid memberships in dozens of Web sites featuring children, was investigated in the Department of Homeland Security’s Operation Predator, an initiative to protect children from sex offenders, sex tourists, Internet child pornographers and human traffickers. The 18-month-old operation has resulted in more than 4,800 arrests ... Yahor Zalatarou, 26, and Aliaksandr Boika, 30, both of Minsk, Belarus, face a prison term of between 25 and 30 years in federal prison under terms of their plea agreement.  Both men were returned to federal custody following the pleas, to await sentencing scheduled for June 6. Jury selection in a trial for Zalatarou and Boika was scheduled to begin tomorrow. Zalatarou and Boika bring to nine the number of guilty pleas made in the government's case against Regpay, its principals and those involved in other companies that assisted in the child porn money laundering operation.  In total, the ICE-led investigation has resulted in the arrest of more than 1,200 subscribers to Regpay-affiliated child pornography websites in the United States and around the globe. "This is among the most vile business enterprises anyone could undertake, and these men did it on a worldwide scale," Christie said.  "You simply cannot overestimate the damage that these men have inflicted on the lives of innocent young children.  It is very satisfying to know that they will spend decades in prison for what they've done."

Iran volunteered back in 2003 to give the IAEA approximately the same go-anywhere see-anything authority that the UN Security Council had required of Iraq. Hence, the IAEA has been able to verify that all Iran's "special nuclear materials" and activities involving the physical or chemical transformation of those materials, have been made subject to Iran's IAEA Safeguards Agreement. Furthermore, in recent interviews, ElBaradei has stated unequivocally that he has found no evidence whatsoever of an Iranian nuclear weapons program – past, present or future. Of course, ElBaradei made similar pronouncements about the absence of a nuke program in Iraq in the days, weeks and months preceding Bush's pre-emptive invasion to destroy "it." ElBaradei has since been shown to have been absolutely right on Iraq and the Likudniks absolutely wrong. Hence, Bush and his underlings ought to be – but apparently aren't – a bit chastened about Iran. One Bush underling – David Kay – has been more than chastened by his experience as chief of the Iraq Survey Group. The ISG – established in June, 2003, by Director of Central Intelligence George Tenet – comprised about two thousand weapon scientists, engineers and intelligence experts and was given the responsibility to determine whether of not Saddam actually had weapons of mass destruction on the eve of Bush's pre-emptive invasion, and if he did, what happened to them. Kay had worked from 1983 to 1991 for Hans Blix when Blix was IAEA Director General. Nevertheless, in the weeks and months before Bush launched his ill-advised attack on Iraq, Kay had appeared on TV and before Congressional Committees, supporting Tenet's 2002 National Intelligence Estimate on Iraqi WMD, and trash-talking Blix and ElBaradei. Kay resigned as chief of the ISG in January, 2004, telling Congress that Saddam's WND didn't exist and that "nearly all of us have been wrong." Then, last month, Kay issued a warning entitled "Let's Not Make the Same Mistakes in Iran."

"The provincial auditor should be called in to scrutinize a land deal at York University that may have cost the cash-strapped school millions of dollars, says Howard Hampton, leader of Ontario's NDP. A Toronto Star investigation published yesterday examined a $15.8 million sale of York University-owned land to Tribute Communities. It showed a top university volunteer who has also been a close business associate of the developer helped broker the untendered deal. "When you look at the details that have been unearthed here, this looks like a situation where the public interest has been sacrificed to private interests," Hampton said. "I would say just looking at it, there is a possible conflict of interest, and a possible breach of the public trust." Hampton said he will demand the auditor's investigation in the Legislature. The Star story outlined the deal this way: Joseph Sorbara, chairman of York University's land development agency, which handled the sale, championed Tribute Communities as the best builder for the job. Sorbara was also a key member of York's negotiating team when the campus land was sold to Tribute. The land may have been sold for much less than it was worth. Howard Sokolowski is the developer. His successful firm, Tribute Communities, is now building 550 homes on the York campus, with hundreds more in the planning stage. Sorbara, who is also a land developer, has been in business with Tribute in other major construction projects and has investments in two Tribute companies. Sorbara is the brother of Ontario's finance minister Greg Sorbara, who has placed his holdings in blind management and resigned as director of The Sorbara Group companies. York University and Joseph Sorbara say everything on the sale was done properly ... York president Lorna Marsden and chairman Marshall Cohen refused numerous interview requests, as did Sorbara."

"Friends and foes alike complained Monday about the use of Canada's powerful national-security laws to detain and deport infamous Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel. While Zundel's supporters bitterly criticized the legal proceedings as a sham, even those who despise his views said the legal process was dangerous to freedoms Canadians cherish. "Zundel is a nasty character and Canadians understandably would like to get rid of him," said Alan Borovoy of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. "But I don't think it's fair to pay a price that is so potentially damaging to civil liberties." Zundel, 65, who has no criminal record in Canada, was scheduled to be put on a plane to Mannheim, Germany on Tuesday, ending his more than four decades in Canada as a landed resident. After hearing evidence from Canada's spy agency, much of it kept secret even from Zundel and his lawyers, a Federal Court judge sided with the government last week that the German citizen threatened national security. Justice Pierre Blais, a former head of the spy agency, concluded Zundel was an influential figure among international neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups that have resorted to violence to further their political aims. "Zundel's activities are not only a threat to Canada's national security but also a threat to the international community of nations," Blais said. In a web-based response, Zundel's U.S.-based wife Ingrid Zundel attacked the justice system. "Canadians might want to ask themselves if they really want a country and care to finance a system where inconvenient dissidents can be imprisoned for years without ever knowing why, just like in Stalin's days," she said. The use of national security certificates, toughened after the 9/11 attacks in the U.S., have come under increasing domestic criticism. "I'm certainly not a fan of (Zundel's) racist views," said Matthew Behrens of Campaign to Stop Secret Trials in Canada, which has lobbied for the release of six Muslim men detained in Canada as suspected terrorists. "Regardless of who they are, I don't think anyone should be subject to a security certificate where they're not allowed to see the case against them." At the Toronto West Detention Centre, where Zundel was detained the last two years in solitary confinement without charge, guards were busy clearing out his cell Monday. Citing security concerns, Immigration authorities refused to tell even close associates which flight he would be on. "Security has become the catch-all reason for denying people access to information," said supporter Paul Fromm. "His lawyer is not even allowed to see him off. What are they really saying - that his lawyer will become demented and start murdering people right, left and centre in the airport? It's absurd." Zundel faces immediate arrest on arrival in Germany, where is wanted for publishing his views that the slaughter of six million Jews and others in Nazi death camps was an elaborate hoax."

Former LA gym owner arrested in drug money laundering case,

"The federal government is seeking to extradite a South African game farm owner for his alleged role in an international Ecstasy ring, authorities said. Police arrested Meir Elran, 38, on Friday in Johannesburg, South Africa. Authorities were acting on a U.S. arrest warrant issued last year, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As part of a joint international undercover investigation into the alleged drug ring, authorities have seized more than 300,000 doses of Ecstasy, with a total street value of $7 million. Elran, who formerly owned a gym in the Studio City section of Los Angeles, is the 14th defendant charged in the case, known as "Operation Money Man." The Israeli national is accused of laundering the proceeds from the alleged sale of the drug. Investigators also allege he paid for at least two loads of the drug that were being brought into the United States, said ICE Agent Buckley Thomas. "Elran and the others involved in this ring trafficked Ecstasy and laundered their profits through bank fraud and real estate transactions," said Loraine Brown, special agent-in-charge of ICE investigations in Los Angeles. Elran left the U.S. for South Africa more than two years ago, according to Thomas, and now owns a $3 million game farm there. The investigation began in March 2002, when U.S. immigration officials received a tip that a group of mostly Israeli nationals were selling Ecstasy in the Los Angeles area."

"Google has taken the unusual step of apologizing for its search results. But only, it seems, for results obtained by searching on the word “Jew", the results for which have been deemed offensive. Linked from the top result obtained by searching the word “Jew", by a link entitled “Offensive Search Results", the apology starts off by saying “An explanation of our search results - If you recently used Google to search for the word “Jew,” you may have seen results that were very disturbing. We assure you that the views expressed by the sites in your results are not in any way endorsed by Google. We’d like to explain why you’re seeing these results when you conduct this search.” Aunty found this entire thing a bit odd. Why should Google apologize for their search results? I mean, isn’t that what they..you know…do? Return search results? And why for the search results for “Jew", but not for the search results for other words which may be taken as either epithet or endearment, like “fag", or even, gasp…the N-word? (Or…hey.. “spammer".) Well, with a bit more digging, there are three things, probably linked, which one notes about this. First, the very first result for a search on “Jew” (well, after the “Offensive Search Results” link) is for a very much anti-semitic site, Jew Watch, at http://www.jewwatch.com. Second, what Google has to say about the fact that Jew Watch is the first result is this: “Our search results are generated completely objectively and are independent of the beliefs and preferences of those who work at Google. Some people concerned about this issue have created online petitions to encourage us to remove particular links or otherwise adjust search results. Because of our objective and automated ranking system, Google cannot be influenced by these petitions. The only sites we omit are those we are legally compelled to remove or those maliciously attempting to manipulate our results.” So they were feeling some heat, from some folks who took exception to the “offensive search results", and are explaining their position. But third, it wasn’t just the petitioners from whom Google was taking heat for their search results on the word “Jew". At the very bottom of the apology page one finds this: “p.s. You may be interested in some additional information the Anti-Defamation League has posted about this issue at http://www.adl.org/rumors/google_search_rumors.asp” It turns out that the ADL had contacted Google to make known “its concerns about rankings of extremist Web sites". Hence this response by Google. Now, all that said, it needs to be noted that even though this is in the news on several sites right now, it actually occurred in April of 2004 - why it’s coming up now is anybody’s guess. However, perhaps most interesting of all is that as we close in on April of 2005 - nearly a year later, guess which website is in the number one position for search results for the word “Jew"? With the apology for the offensive search results right above."

Fagin, Shylock and Blair,

"There are two great anti-Semitic personas in English literature. Both were created by men of genius, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, in works of genius, The Merchant of Venice and Oliver Twist. Both portray a stereotypical Jew as avaricious, ruthless and cunning. The names of both of these characters are so familiar that they have entered the language. They are Shylock and Fagin. Yesterday, The Mail on Sunday rightly published two striking photographs side by side. Both are carefully staged, with a Fagin figure holding an old-fashioned pocket watch on a chain. The first is a picture of Barry Humphries actually playing Fagin. The second is a Labour Party poster of Michael Howard, carefully chosen to fit the Fagin image. The second picture has, of course, been doctored by Labour. The watch and chain have been added. The relationship between the two poses is obviously intentional; there is even an unusual knot in the watch chain that appears in both. We are intended to associate Mr Howard with Fagin, that is with a sinister Jewish criminal as seen by anti-Semites. This is part of the Labour pre-election campaign. Another Labour Party poster, to be seen on the Labour website, shows Michael Howard and Oliver Letwin as two flying pigs. Recently Mike O’Brien, the Trade Minister, wrote an article for a Muslim newspaper that questioned whether Mr Howard could be trusted to support Muslims. Last year Ian McCartney, the chairman of the
Labour Party, compared Mr Letwin to Fagin. The steering group for the Labour election campaign consists of 12 members, led by Alan Milburn and Alastair Campbell. It includes Darren Murphy, who is the Downing Street press officer. All 12 are close to the Prime Minister. When they hint that the Leader of the Opposition resembles a Jewish villain, they must know the rest of us will take the hint, or at least to note that he is Jewish. Unfortunately, some voters are anti-Semites who will rise to the bait. Behind it all there stands the figure of Mr Blair himself. This is his campaign ... Of course, any anti-Semitism has been denied; the purpose of the operation is to raise the controversy and then withdraw. But the Fagin image will

"With Pope John Paul II more frail than ever, Roman Catholic cardinals and bishops from around the world told a conference of Jewish leaders Monday that the Vatican's unprecedented outreach to Jews over the last several decades will continue. Opening their meeting with a prayer for the pope's recovery, church leaders affirmed declarations of the Second Vatican Council that transformed Catholic thinking about Jews, including the rejection of any collective Jewish responsibility for the death of Christ. This year marks the 40th anniversary of that document Nostra Aetate, or "In Our Age," which laid out the church's teaching on Judaism. "That which happened during the passion of Christ cannot be blamed on the Jews of the time and certainly not on the Jews of today," said Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes, addressing about 100 people at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, a Holocaust museum in Manhattan. "We must be very careful in our catechism and our teaching not to teach in any way an interpretation of the Gospel that can stimulate anti-Semitism," Hummes said through a translator. John Paul is credited by many with doing more than any other pontiff to reach out to Jews. He was the first to visit a synagogue, he prayed at Judaism's holiest site - the Western Wall - and he repeatedly condemned anti-Jewish prejudice as sinful. Jewish leaders have become anxious about who will succeed John Paul and have been reaching our to his possible successors. Hummes and Belgian Cardinal Godfried Danneels were among the cardinals at the symposium who have been mentioned as potential candidates. The meeting was organized by the World Jewish Congress, which represents Jewish communities in more than 80 countries and is perhaps best known for compelling governments, banks and corporations to pay billions of dollars to settle Holocaust-related claims. The veteran banker has been signed up by The Childrens Investment fund (TCI), the London hedge fund that is leading opposition to Deutsche Börse's £1.4 billion takeover offer for the London Stock Exchange. TCI and other rebels want to oust Breuer and the rest of the Deutsche supervisory board in order to halt the bid. Rothschild, head of the UK branch of the European banking dynasty, is deputy chairman of BskyB and a well-known patron of the arts. The investors' choice for chief executive to take the place of Werner Seifert can also be revealed. He is Reto Francioni, the chairman of the Swiss exchange, and an enemy of Seifert. Francioni spent several years as Seifert's deputy at Deutsche Börse until they fell out in 2000 over strategy, including the chief executive's ambitions to buy the LSE. Deutsche Börse is competing with Euronext, the European exchange, to buy the LSE. The attack by more than 40% of its shareholders has seriously weakened its chances of winning the bid battle. However, Seifert is said to be defiant in the face of the shareholder rebellion. On Friday he told reporters: "When you enter a process like this, you enter to win it." ... Niall Gallagher and Samuel Joab, who run the bank's European equity desk, last week wrote to all the members of Deutsche Börse's supervisory board expressing their opposition to the bid."

hedge fund which has a 5 per cent-plus stake in Deutsche Börse and is leading the campaign - alongside The Children's Investment Fund - to stymie the German company's plans to take over the London Stock Exchange for £1.35bn. The two hedge funds want to force Deutsche Börse, led by Werner Seifert, its chief executive, to abandon its bid plans, and return ?500m (£346m) in excess capital to shareholders. They are planning to call an emergency general meeting to oust the supervisory board and, in turn, dismiss Seifert. However, the hedge funds' approach to Lord Rothschild - whose investment business, RIT, has a stake in Deutsche Börse of just under 1 per cent - may prove controversial. But it’s not so easy to find kosher-certified over-the-counter medicines, which Rabbi Dovid Heber called “the last frontier.” That may be changing. The Orthodox Union, the most recognized certifier of kosher products in the country, has endorsed Triaminic cough syrup, making it the first mainstream over-the-counter medication the union has deemed acceptable under the dietary laws of Orthodox Judaism. Efforts to develop a kosher Maalox are in the preliminary stages. Triaminic, in packages bearing the OU symbol, was shipped to stores beginning last July after a division of the brand’s parent company, Novartis Consumer Health, worked with the union for a year and a half to certify eight varieties of the syrup. Smaller labels and herbal or homeopathic lines have been certified in the past. And the antacid Tums was approved by Diamond-K, a smaller certifier, in the late 1990s, according to Rabbi Rachmiel Liberman, Diamond-K’s executive director ... Though prescription medications are not subject to dietary laws because they are considered lifesaving, Orthodox rabbis say vitamins or products used to treat non-life-threatening conditions should be certified as kosher when possible, especially because they often contain flavors that make them more palatable ... “Consumers are more sophisticated today,” Safran said. Ring suspected of trading in stolen Palestinian land,

"Police are investigating suspicions that the former CEO of Himnuta, a subsidiary of the Jewish National Fund, purchased stolen Palestinian lands in exchange for bribes. On Sunday, police arrested five suspects in the affair: Haim Cohen, who was Himnuta's CEO until two months ago; Lieutenant Colonel Yair Blumenthal, head of the Civil Administration's infrastructure department; brothers Yosef and Yaakov Amram, Jerusalem businessmen; and their lawyer, Eitan Tzachi. The five are suspected of forging documents, illegal land dealing and aggravated fraud. Police believe that the ring was responsible for at least five deals in which West Bank lands were stolen from their Palestinian owners and sold to Himnuta for a total of more than NIS 20 million. The stolen lands are located near Hebron, Gush Etzion, Jericho, Ma'aleh Adumim and Givat Ze'ev ... Blumenthal, one of the Civil Administration's most veteran employees, is suspected of providing the ring with information acquired in the course of his work about lands that would be suitable for fraudulent sale. He also allegedly approved the sales in his professional capacity, even though he knew they were fraudulent. Police suspect that he was bribed to provide these services ... Army sources concurred, noting that Blumenthal is an ideological ally of the settlement movement and good friends with many of its leaders. In his professional capacity, the sources added, he often facilitated the establishment of illegal settlement outposts."

Across the world the Jewish lobby in America is accorded extraordinary power, almost to the mythic levels of guileful effectiveness once attributed to the British Secret Service. And in truth, MI6, as the Secret Service was also known, never approached the Jewish lobby in overall clout. But these days, if you read analyses by American Jews of where their power is headed, the tone is often dour and the forecast grim. They say, in the words of the American anti-Arab fanatic Daniel Pipes, "the golden age of the Jews" in America has passed its zenith. This may seem strange when there is universal recognition that George Bush may well be the most pro-Israel president in the nation's history, when the role of the so-called "neocons", usually short-hand for the more fanatical supporters of Israel in American public life, is identified as crucial in pushing for the war on Iraq and now on Iran, when pro Israel votes in the US Congress sweep through by margins of over 90 per cent. But listen to a man like Illinois-based political analyst Richard Baehr, writing in American Thinker. Baehr could fairly be described as a Zionist ultra. He can also read numbers objectively. Recently he outlined in a speech and then in his publication the reasons he sees for concern. The indices of dismay for Baehr show most clearly in population statistics ... [F]rom a peak of 6 million American Jews, or 4% of the US population in 1950, Jews are now just about 5.2 million in number, according to the latest Jewish population surveys, or a bit less than 2% of the US population, and the trend points down to maybe three million in the next but one generation. Baehr laments that "With an intermarriage rate around 50%, and a fertility rate of 1.6 children per Jewish woman, Jews are committing population suicide." He takes a swipe at liberal American Jews, most of them supporters of legal abortion: "American Jews marry late and often never marry, and have fewer children as a result. The commitment to abortion rights as a pre-eminent political issue strikes me a particularly odd, with Jewish numbers declining at an accelerating rate. Rather than being aggressive advocates of abortion rights, Jews might more rationally be advocates of carrying unwanted pregnancies to term, and then giving up the babies for adoption. This is especially the case since many Jewish women marry late and have difficulty conceiving" ... Back to Baehr's nightmare of Muslim breeders. As Jews decline in number, he points with a quivering finger at the Arab and Muslim population in America heading in the other direction. Baehr cites two academic studies putting the US Muslim population at between 1.8 and 2.9 million, with the total Arab/Muslim community "probably about 3.5 million, two thirds the size of the Jewish community." Turning to political influence in the form of financial contributions, Baehr notes that in the 2004 campaign, four Jews - George Soros, Peter Lewis, Steven Bing and Herbert Sandler - gave over $80 million to Democratic political funds. While "this level of political giving by a few individuals has never happened before in the history of the country Israel is not the leading agenda item for any of them. They were Bush-haters, pure and simple. This is true of much of the political money that comes from Jews in Hollywood (from where Bing hails). Israel is not the motivator for their contributions." Baehr goes on to portray, somewhat fancifully, the Democratic Party as increasingly falling into the clutches of what he sees as the ultra, Israel-hating left, headed by Michael Moore, the movie director. I seem to remember Moore taking enormous pains last year to absolve Israel from any unpleasing role in Fahrenheit 911, by the simple tactic of not mentioning that troublesome nation. By "Israel hating" Baehr appears to mean anyone who speaks up in any way for justice for Palestinians or criticizes Ariel Sharon. Seeing the Democratic Party as a lost cause for Israel over the long term, and on the decline as a political force in America, he extols the alliance between Christian Evangelicals and Orthodox Jews and the Republican Party. To anyone used to lamenting the overwhelming tilt towards Israel in intellectual circles and the media it is bizarre to find Baehr writing that he sees a "Distancing of media, academic and intellectual elites from Israel" and to hear him citing Frank Luntz, a pollster, as saying "there is great danger ahead, because American elite opinion is not sympathetic to Israel, and it is getting worse. Elites view Israel as aggressive and warlike and Palestinians as victims. Academia is the community that is the least sympathetic to Israel, since lefty radicals from the 60s run the faculty at most schools." Happily for the blood pressure of his audience, Baehr did open his often gloomy survey with these words: "There is good news and bad news. The good news is that the reports of the decline of Jewish and pro-Israel influence, and the rise of Arab/Muslim influence in the American political system are at the moment greatly exaggerated. The bad news is that change is underway, and the relative shift described above is occurring."

"Perhaps one of the most difficult things for a decent person to do is to act in a way that feels somehow disloyal. To betray one’s family and friends, one’s deeply held principles, is wrenching, disorienting, shaming. For a decent person, it is profoundly difficult to do something that feels so immeasurably wrong. It is for this reason that so many of us have found it difficult to examine closely the situation in Israel and Palestine. We are crippled by the very decency that would normally require us to speak out. For many of us, if we are Jewish, the very act of questioning Israel’s actions in Palestine arouses deep and immobilizing feelings of disloyalty – to our families, to our parents and their principles, to relatives who may have died in death camps. If we are not Jewish, questioning Israel’s actions arouses unexamined feelings of disloyalty to values by which we have determined to live our lives. Anti-Semitism is abhorrent to us. Acting in a way that even hints at this feels contaminating, morally and emotionally obscene. Acting in a way that even suggests disloyalty to Jewish friends feels unthinkable. And so we all avoid the subject. It is not until we force ourselves to study the situation for ourselves, to delve deeply beneath the mostly skewed information of our news outlets, that we realize that our definition of disloyalty has been tragically inverted – that speaking out for the human rights of Palestinians is, in fact, the profoundest loyalty of all: to the values of decency, of humanity, of Judaism, of Christianity, of Islam, of numerous religious and spiritual traditions. We learn that, in reality, equating the wrongdoing of Israel with Jewishness is the deepest and most insidious form of anti-Semitism of all. We learn that if we are Jewish – or if we are not Jewish – our silence is the most profound betrayal of all – of the principles by which we seek to live moral and meaningful lives. It is time for all of us to stop our self-censorship. Every generation has a chance to act courageously – to oppose the kind of injustice and unthinkable brutality that is going on in the Middle East right now. Or to avert our eyes, and remain silent. "Haganah" in Hebrew means defense. But when Internet Haganah's founder places another AK-47 on his site, it means mission accomplished: another jihad website taken out by going on the offensive. Aaron Weisburd runs Internet Haganah out of his southern Illinois home. Weisburd, who said he has received threats because of his activities, asked to communicate by e-mail. The forty-something native of New York describes Internet Haganah as a "small band of researchers, analysts, translators and consultants" around the globe dedicated to ferreting out websites linked to terrorist groups. "Islamist terrorists are making extensive use of the internet," he said. This compelled him to action, but unlike a politically motivated hacker, he chose a legal path. Internet Haganah survives on individual donations and advertising. "Internet Haganah is one part combat mission, one part intelligence operation, one part grass-roots political action," Weisburd said. Since its inception three years ago, Internet Haganah has taken credit for or assisted in the shutdown of more than 600 sites it claims were linked to terror. Some allegedly raised funds for pro-Palestinian groups Hamas and Hezbollah; others backed the insurgency in Iraq."

"Holland's leading football team, is locked in a dispute with its fans, but the row has nothing to do with coaching, the players or anything that happens on the pitch or in the club's boardroom.The dispute has escalated into the latest test case for Dutch tolerance, already under siege following the assassination of Pim Fortuyn, a populist politician, and last November's slaying of Theo van Gogh, a controversial filmmaker, by a Muslim extremist. At the same time, it has shone a harsh light on the growth of "virtual" anti-Semitism in Europe, in which the hate-filled slogans of the Middle East are adopted by those who wish merely to provoke or shock. Hardcore Ajax supporters have been calling themselves "Jews" or even "super Jews" for about 20 years in defiance of fans from rival clubs, who yell anti-Semitic jibes at them in reference to Amsterdam's long Jewish history. For years, the club's management turned a blind eye to escalating displays of "Jewish" pride among its supporters. The fans' reaction has been mixed, judging by a visit to the team's vast ArenA stadium in south-eastern Amsterdam. Ilona Korfer, a 19-year-old student, was browsing in the Ajax team store. Among the chains and necklaces around Miss Korfer's throat nestled a gold Star of David, to go with her Ajax replica jersey, and hair-grip in the team's red and white colours. Ajax fans had every right to call themselves Jews, whatever the club ruled, said Miss Korfer, a Gentile. "I don't see the problem. It's part of the game," she said. Such arguments used to sway Uri Coronel, a former director of Ajax, and a prime mover behind the club's appeal to the fans, last month. "People ask me, when I was on the Ajax board, why didn't I do something about it? It's a difficult question, because I don't know why," said Mr Coronel, who is Jewish. But a personal turning point came last year, when Mr Coronel rode to Rotterdam on the team coach, only to find the bus surrounded by Feyenoord fans, making Heil Hitler salutes."

Europeans: Turkey Must Fight Anti-Semitism,

"A European report on racism and intolerance in Turkey is calling for greater efforts to combat anti-Semitism in the country. The report, released last week, was issued by the Council of Europe, a body that focuses on democratization and human rights issues. Based in Strasbourg, France, the organization, which has 46 countries as members, is distinct from the more influential European Union. Prepared by the council's European Commission on Racism and Intolerance, the report covers a number of human rights and religious freedom issues in Turkey. While praising some of the reforms the Turkish government has made in recent years as part of its bid to become a member of the European Union, the report suggests that anti-Semitism is an area about which there still is cause for concern. While noting that Turkey's 25,000-member Jewish community has enjoyed a generally peaceful existence, the document says, "In the opinion of representatives of the Jewish community, the climate has suddenly changed, mainly in the wake of international terrorist attacks in November 2003, targets of which included two synagogues in Istanbul. "There is now a feeling of insecurity in the Jewish community because of these and other incidents, such as physical assaults on individuals purely because they are Jewish, at least on of which proved fatal. Antisemitic propaganda continues to appear in certain sections of the media and it is apparently not unusual to come across sweeping statements in the press in which Turkey's Jewish community is equated with the policies of the state of Israel." While noting that the Turkish authorities have been working closely with the Jewish community to improve security at its facilities, the report criticized the government for not using legal measures consistently to prosecute those inciting anti-Semitism and those making public anti-Semitic comments. In its official response to the report, the Turkish government said the document creates a "false impression" that there is public animosity against the Jewish community, citing the public and official support that the Jewish community received after the 2003 synagogue bombings. Furthermore, the report "fails to appreciate an already growing sensitivity in the Turkish judiciary against antisemitist [sic] statements," the Turkish government said. Jewish leaders said the question of anti-Semitic writing in the Turkish press is one that has them especially concerned. "We are very worried by the increase in anti-Semitic articles," said a senior community official, who asked not to be named. "There has definitely been an increase in the last few months, and that is a very worrying trend." While Turkey's Islamist press long has been a consistent source of anti-Semitic articles, such as ones claiming that Jews are buying up land in Turkey in order to allow Israel to control the country's resources, in recent months there have been a growing number of similar articles in the country's nationalist newspapers and occasionally in the mainstream press, the leader said. In the current environment, where a Turkish translation of Hitler's "Mein Kampf" is a bestseller, even the council's report is fodder for some of the press, the official said. "The fact that the report is out, and in the report it says that there is anti-Semitism in Turkey, this in itself is creating anti-Semitic articles in the part of the press that is always ready to attack us Jews. It's a dilemma for the community," the leader said."

"Palestinian security forces on Saturday arrested two suspected militants in connection with a suicide bombing that killed four Israelis at a Tel Aviv nightclub, acting on orders from Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to track down and punish those responsible. Palestinian security officials pointed to the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah, which has been trying to disrupt an informal Mideast truce, as the apparent mastermind of the attack. Abbas hinted at Hezbollah involvement, holding a "third party" responsible for the bombing. Hezbollah, which is funded by Iran, has hundreds of West Bank gunmen from various Palestinian militant groups on its payroll. Israel and the United States said Abbas has to act quickly and forcefully — despite his long-standing reluctance to confront militants — if he wants to rescue a fragile Mideast truce."

"The perennial debate over politically incorrect high school mascots is back, with a twist. A couple of Tamarac High School students recently discovered that the logo for their mascot, a Bengal tiger, is identical to that of a well-known hate group.
"This is something that's been all around the school for the past couple of weeks," senior Sam Estabrooks said earlier this month of the buzz the matching logos have created. Two school districts here have several versions of the Bengal logo. But one, which is on a calendar and gym bags, is the same as a symbol for the National Association for the Advancement of White People, a racist group once led by former Ku Klux Klan member and one-time Louisiana state representative David Duke. "It's not going to be our logo anymore, I can tell you that," Tamarac Superintendent Teresa Thayer Snyder said of the image. The offending logo was spotted when some students saw it while researching hate crimes. They saw it on a Web site maintained by the Anti-Defamation League about hate groups and their logos. "They brought it down to my office and said, 'Look at this,' " Snyder said of the discovery. She added that the NAAWP/Bengal logo is just one of several tiger-themed images used by the district. "We've got like 500 different tiger pictures on the building," she said, adding that the image in question has been around for a while and appears to be a piece of "clip art," a generic image that is widely available in publications and online. School officials are removing the image wherever possible, taking it off publications, signs and anything else on which it's displayed. Extirpating them all, though, might be difficult. A pep squad recently handed out a bunch of gym bags with the logos, noted another student. Snyder said teachers planned to have students develop a new Bengal tiger image. By turning the affair into a group project, kids will also be able to learn about hate groups and their symbols, Snyder said. That's the best way to handle such a coincidence, added Joel Levy, New York regional director for the ADL, which combats anti-Semitism, racism and other forms of bigotry."

"Recently, Shamai Leibowitz and Liat Weingart spoke about their life experiences with Israeli occupation, oppression and targeted divestment, to a group of sixty people in Oak Park, IL. Leibowitz, an Orthodox Jew, is a human rights lawyer in Tel Aviv and a staff sergeant in the Israeli Defense Forces. Weingart, born in Netanya, Israel, is the Co-Director of Jewish Voice for Peace, one of the largest grassroots organizations in the United States. From 1986 – 1991, Leibowitz served as a non-commissioned officer of the Israeli Army in the Palestinian Occupied Territories. During his army duty, his commanding officer sent him to raid Palestinian villages that incited against the occupation or that did not pay their taxes. Most of the raids were in the middle of the night. "I see the look on the children as their parents were humiliated, sometimes beaten," he said. Leibowitz spoke about a torture chamber in Tulkarem where people were beaten blue with bruises. He expressed his reservations about the torture of Palestinians to his commanding officer. "Here in the Occupied Territories, you’re not supposed to think," his commanding officer said. "Just follow orders." When Leibowitz saw Palestinian prisoners held for years, their homes demolished by Israeli bulldozers, and the expansion of Jewish-only settlements and roads, he asked himself: "Can this really be protecting the State of Israel?" He described Israel’s construction of a concrete wall, 24-feet high, around Palestinian villages, in the name of security. "The wall doesn’t allow people to live, develop and flourish," he said. "It denies them basic necessities." He believes Israel’s actions toward the Palestinians "are sowing the seeds of insecurity and terror" ... "I’m asking Americans who really care about Israel to care about where their money is going," Leibowitz said. "We first have to cut the lifeline that feeds the occupation." Since 1967, the U.S. Government gave $100 billion dollars for the occupation’s infrastructure. Moreover, several American companies sell equipment that causes this suffering. Leibowitz gave several examples. He told the audience: "Do everything you can in your power so that your money is not going to these companies." ... Caterpillar Corporation provides the Israeli Army with the D-9 bulldozer and other equipment used to carry out widespread and systemic house demolitions, acts which have been classified by the UN Commission on Human Rights as war crimes ... Other companies provide fighter jets (Lockheed Martin), aircraft engines (General Electric), and missiles (Raytheon) often used to bomb targets in civilian areas and commit other human rights abuses. Investments in the companies specified by the resolution exceed $2.8 Million ... Leibowitz stated he knows people who take action may be harshly criticized by the American Jewish establishment ... Weingart talked about her organization’s STOP Caterpillar campaign. Despite firestorms of criticism, the organization believes their campaign will move the selective divestment movement forward in America ... She explained that Americans feel guilt and shame about the Holocaust. When people criticize Israel, they may be accused of anti-Semitism. "The way (Americans) deal with anti-Semitism is to arm Israel," she said. "But Palestinians pay the price." Weingart questioned why Americans do not see the lopsidedness of the conflict. "They’ve shut off their brains and become the yes men," she said. "We’re going to have to talk about anti-Semitism." From her point of view, American Jews need to stare Jewish oppression in the face in order to face the occupation."

me like a security scanner, I am awed by George Weidenfeld. It's like waiting for a monarch to appear. The misty reaches of the early morning Thames stretch out below his sumptuous apartment in Chelsea. A tiny maid takes my coat and I loiter in his leathery library just long enough to contemplate the juxtaposition of erotic sketches by Klimt and frowning portraits of old Popes. An excitable Pekingese, wild with the sense of something about to happen, bursts into the room, makes a frenzied appraisal of my footwear and is escorted away. Softly, on brown suede shoes, Lord Weidenfeld makes his entrance through double doors. It is a stealthy but immensely theatrical moment. He looks both wily and congenial. He is not a large man, but his squareness, encased in a brown, double-breasted, fine-wool suit, could easily seem menacing if he were not so steeped in old-fashioned courtesy. As he lowers himself a little stiffly into his favourite armchair, I catch a whiff of gentleman's eau de toilette. Everyone has a set of contradictory expectations about George, Grand Old Man of publishing. He's the teetotal party-giver, the much-married womaniser, the international networker, the Jew fascinated by Catholicism, the Viennese émigré who knows the British establishment better than they know themselves, the wheeler-dealer, the aesthete, the profligate commissioner of books who, it's said, doesn't read them. George, they say, conjures a book out of everyone he meets. So when it first became known that he was a regular guest at the Pope's summer seminars at Castel Gandolfo, the joke was that he must be signing up the Holy Father for his memoirs, complete with Sunday newspaper serial rights. Fifteen years later, the old devil has. Memory & Identity, an autobiographical meditation by John Paul II, is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson this Friday and, though short on personal revelation, is a publishing coup of colossal significance, given that the Pope is old, frail and tottering towards the end of his papacy. "It is not a kiss-and-tell autobiography," says Weidenfeld, "but an intellectual and spiritual legacy. Every word is his. It is not a ghosted book. We were near publication five years ago, but his illness and hesitations and changes delayed it enormously." Only George would have had the tenacity to press on through the thickets of Vatican administration, says Ion Trewin, Weidenfeld's editor-in-chief. "When he first started talking about the Pope, we all said: 'Yes, yes, George...' and waited. We'd given it up for lost. Then, suddenly, it came alive again in the autumn. Now he's done it." Weidenfeld was one of only two or three laymen invited to the Pope's philosophical, shirtsleeve weekends at Castel Gandolfo. He knows the man; he has immersed himself in the history and machinery of the Catholic Church ... "I am future-orientated," he says. "I am much more interested in the declining birthrate in Europe, or the problem of Islam, than who's going to win the next election." The ongoing Indian summer of George Weidenfeld began in 1991 when he sold his independent publishing company to Anthony Cheetham for about £4 million ... The following year, he took a beautiful fourth wife, Annabelle Whitestone, 25 years his junior, a woman best known for having been the mistress of Artur Rubinstein until the pianist's death at the age of 95 ... Weidenfeld's legendary amours have always been equal to his appetite for a brilliant deal or for acquiring well-placed friends. His mistake, until recently, was to regularise them in marriage. Phrases such as "casual infidelities", "romantic adventure" and "turbulent affair" drift like a scent through his 1994 autobiography, Remembering My Good Friends. Someone could profitably commission him to write a sequel called Remembering My Old Lovers ... Most elderly men, reminded of a Don Juanish past, would boast. Weidenfeld takes the analytical approach: women are works of art and he the discerning collector. "I am not clubbable in the English sense of the word," he says ... In 1952, after a brief and intense courtship, he married Jane Sieff, of the Marks & Spencer clan ... Sexual obsession led to his second marriage, in 1956, to the Bohemian beauty, Barbara Skelton, former wife of his friend Cyril Connolly ... Skelton had found his addiction to work chilling. "Germany's Catholic Church on Friday distanced itself from
comments made by Pope John Paul likening abortion to the Holocaust and urged church leaders to be careful when referring to the mass murder of Jews. Jewish groups in Germany had criticized a passage in the Pontiff's new book, "Memory and Identity", in which he calls abortion a "legal extermination" comparable to attempts to wipe out Jews and other groups in the 20th century. Cardinal Karl Lehmann, head of the German Catholic bishops' conference issued a statement after a two-hour meeting with Paul Spiegel, president of the country's Central Council of Jews, saying they had agreed the uniqueness of the Holocaust. "When the Holocaust is taken up or mentioned in political, social or church speeches a particularly sensitive language is always needed," the statement said. But it added the religious leaders had not reached complete agreement over the "interpretation" of recent comments by Catholics criticized by the Central Council of Jews. In January, Cologne's Catholic cardinal, Joachim Meisner, sparked controversy when listing Herod's murder of the infants of Bethlehem, mass murder by Hitler and Stalin and abortion as examples of rebellion against God during an Epiphany sermon. Meisner said later he regretted the passage. The Nazi
extermination of nearly six million Jews and an estimated 5.5 million others including Poles, Russians, Gypsies, homosexuals and Catholic and Protestant clergy, is a sensitive issue in Germany, where denying the Holocaust is a crime. Spiegel told a news conference after the meeting that Jews and Catholics had particularly good relations in Germany, and isolated comments by certain Church representatives would not change this. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican's top doctrinal official, dismissed the charges when presenting the pope's book. He said the Pope "was not trying to put the Holocaust and abortion on the same level" but only warning that evil lurked everywhere, "even in liberal political systems". "The New York City Department of Education will prohibit a professor of Arab studies at Columbia University from appearing in an occasional training program for secondary-school teachers, citing the professor's criticism of Israel. Rashid Khalidi, director of Columbia's Middle East Institute, had spoken this month at one of a series of teacher-development workshops, paid for by the university, about Middle Eastern culture and politics. But last week, after The New York Sun published an article assailing Mr. Khalidi's involvement in the program, Joel I. Klein, the city's schools chancellor, announced that the professor would no longer be allowed to participate. "Considering his past statements, Rashid Khalidi should not have been included in a program that provided professional development for DOE teachers, and he won't be participating in the future," Jerry Russo, Mr. Klein's press secretary, wrote in an e-mail message to the Sun. In the past year Mr. Khalidi has participated in two training sessions. Neither generated any controversy. But Columbia's Middle East Institute has come under heavy fire from politicians and newspapers like the Sun, which have accused the program of promoting pro-Palestinian views, disparaging Israel, and intimidating pro-Israel students. Last fall Anthony Wiener, a Democratic member of Congress who is now running for mayor of New York, urged Columbia to fire a colleague of Mr. Khalidi's -- Joseph A. Massad, a professor of Arab politics -- for his purportedly heated attacks on Israel. The criticism was alleged to have taken place in class, where Mr. Massad was said to have badgered students (The Chronicle, November 5, 2004). Mr. Khalidi, in an interview on Monday, criticized Mr. Wiener and the Sun for attacking his institute and the field of Arab studies in general. "I think there's a broad attack on professors of the Middle East, and it's based on calumnies, innuendo, and taking situations out of context," he said. Mr. Khalidi also blamed the Columbia administration's "supine" response to the controversy, which, he said, has emboldened the institute's critics. In the wake of the allegations about the Middle East Institute, the university established a committee to look into claims that students were intimidated in class. Hundreds of people, mostly college faculty members, have signed a petition urging Lee C. Bollinger, Columbia's president, to defend Mr. Massad and to condemn the accusations leveled at the Middle East Institute. Mr. Khalidi was among the petition's signers. "The sooner there's an organized response to these people who have absolutely no scruples about twisting the truth, the better," he said. Columbia officials have not officially commented on the city schools' decision to ban Mr. Khalidi from the training program. In a statement released after the Middle East Institute came under fire last fall, Mr. Bollinger pledged to uphold the university's policy on freedom of expression but added, "We believe that the principle of academic freedom is not unlimited."

Lobbying group targets GM to halt its support of MADD,

"General Motors Corp., which is a lightning rod for criticism on everything from air pollution to auto quality, has now become a target for one of its charitable efforts - its financial and political push to combat drunken driving. A national campaign - called MADDatGM - has been launched with the backing of 17,000 bars, taverns and liquor stores to attack the automaker and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, mostly for their efforts to lower legal blood-alcohol levels. The effort has so far been a low-key one, but GM officials say the Washington-based trade group behind it is threatening that its members will quit buying GM vehicles for corporate fleet use - which could cost the automaker millions of dollars. The campaign, which already has a Web site and will distribute posters and coasters at various stores and bars, argues that MADD is no longer just trying to halt drunken driving, but has become a "prohibitionist group" that wants to criminalize all drinking. The campaign argues that GM, with its long-running support of MADD, supports prohibition and that tavern or liquor-store owners should think twice about buying GM cars or trucks. MADD denies that it's trying to halt social drinking, saying its mission is focused on three things: preventing drunk driving, helping victims of drunken driving and halting underage drinking. MADD notes the MADDatGM push is from businesses that make money off alcohol sales and are angry MADD successfully lobbied for national blood-alcohol levels for drunken driving ... "We want to stop GM from contributing to MADD. We have a problem with GM money going to criminalize social drinkers. GM needs to recognize it is attacking legitimate businesses," said Rick Berman, the high-powered Washington, D.C., lobbyist running the MADDatGM campaign. Berman has a history of representing tobacco firms, restaurant chains or beer distributors in fights against labor unions, consumer-health groups and efforts to raise the minimum wage. Berman estimates a "few hundred thousand dollars" has been spent on the MADDatGM campaign, but that could grow if the effort has success. The American Beverage Licensees, a Washington-based trade group representing 12,000 bars and 5,000 liquor stores, is funding it. "All of my clients are corporations, so it's odd we are taking on GM," said Berman. "But I think someone inside GM is trying to buy MADD's silence on issues like the speed of vehicles or driver distraction that come from something like OnStar or satellite radio." MADD and GM both chafe at Berman's comments. MADD notes GM specified its money go to underage drinking prevention for three years and the next two years to help people harmed in drunken driving. MADD spokeswoman Heidi Castle says preventing driver distraction is not MADD's focus. "Our mission is to prevent drunken driving. We want people on the road that are safe. We are not against drinking by people who are over age 21. This group is just trying to scare people because of our effort to lower the blood-alcohol standard to 08," said Castle. The national standard for drunken driving is blood-alcohol content of .08 percent as part of legislation signed in 2000. A spokeswoman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the federal agency in charge of auto safety, defended MADD, saying because of them the number of alcohol-related deaths has dropped from 26,173 in 1982 to 17,013 in 2003."

"Last spring, when the anti-fast-food documentary Super Size Me began opening in American theaters, an opinion writer named Richard Berman swung into action. He cranked out a scathing op-ed for the Chicago Sun-Times that blasted the film for "serving up a flawed premise: that we're powerless to stop Big Food from turning us into a nation of fatties." When legendary TV chef Julia Child died a few months later, Berman saw another opportunity. He wrote a piece for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that used her death as an occasion to debunk the idea that soft drinks are linked to diabetes. And last month, when a Cleveland hospital garnered national attention for trying to evict its in-house McDonald's, Berman was invited on CNN to critique the move. "I don't see anything wrong with giving people choices," he observed mildly. Why did these mainstream media outlets air Berman's opinions on such pressing health issues? Is he a doctor? A nutritionist? A health-policy wonk? None of the above. He's a Washington lobbyist. Berman runs an outfit called the Center for Consumer Freedom, which says it's devoted to defending "the right of adults and parents to choose what they eat, drink, and how they enjoy themselves." From his offices a block from the White House, Berman wages a never-ending public-relations assault on doctors, health advocates, scientists, food researchers, and just about anyone else who highlights the health downsides of eating junk food or being obese. He also targets groups that want animal-treatment standards for the meat industry, such as PETA, and trial lawyers who want to sue the food industry -- "obesity lawyers licking their chops in search of their next super-sized payday." Such people, Berman notes on the center's Web site, are "food cops, health care enforcers, militant activists, meddling bureaucrats and violent radicals who think they know what's best for you." However, while Berman presents himself as a defender of consumers against overbearing bureaucrats and health zealots, he's really defending the interests of another group: restaurant chains, food and beverage companies, meat producers, and others who stand to see profits hampered by government regulations, or even by increased health awareness on the part of customers. Indeed, Berman has carved out a unique -- and very profitable -- niche in Washington's ever more sophisticated PR universe. At a time when the politics of food is going mainstream -- similar to the tobacco wars a generation ago -- he is the food and restaurant industry's No. 1 weapon against those seeking to regulate or shed light on its activities. Relying on seed money from Philip Morris, Berman launched his group in 1995, with the explicit goal of uniting the tobacco and hospitality industries against the myriad forces of overregulation, particularly those pushing smoking bans in restaurants. But over time, food issues became the organization's focus, and the center's been bankrolled by hefty contributions from the food and restaurant industries ... Berman’s efforts might not seem all that remarkable in a city where industry-funded "astroturf" groups are so emboldened that many no longer bother concealing funding sources. Yet he stands out, if only for the sheer, unparalleled audacity with which he's straddled his dual roles as consumer "advocate" and industry lobbyist. Consider that in addition to running the Center for Consumer Freedom, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), Berman also has another day job: He's the founder and president of an influential Washington lobbying firm, Berman & Co. According to press accounts, the firm has performed for-profit lobbying for -- you guessed it -- many of the same industries served by the center: restaurant chains like Outback, Hooters, and Red Lobster (a spokesman declined comment). Berman has also lobbied for the American Beverage Institute, which represents restaurateurs and beverage manufacturers. (On behalf of such clients, he opposed the Americans with Disabilities Act, argued against hikes in the federal minimum wage and helped defeat federal legislation that would have imposed a uniform lower blood-alcohol threshold to mark drunken driving -- all regulatory reforms that threatened the profits of his clients.) It's challenging indeed to sort out where the for-profit lobbying against regulation ends and the nonprofit consumer freedom fighting against regulation begins. And it gets murkier. Berman's nonprofit center, it turns out, has also been paying handsome sums for research, communications, and other services to none other than ... Berman & Co. In 2002, for example, according to its Internal Revenue Service filing, the Center for Consumer Freedom paid Berman & Co. more than $1 million. So, to recap: Berman the Defender of Consumers runs a nonprofit that collects donations from industries served by Berman the Corporate Lobbyist -- and also pays lucrative fees to Berman the Corporate Lobbyist for his services. If you managed to follow that, you'll probably agree that Berman has pulled off a pretty impressive piece of lobbying jujitsu -- one that says an awful lot about how things really function at the nexus of government policy, big corporations, and the media. Berman's roles have grown so blurry that one good-government group has called on the IRS to revoke the center's tax-exempt status. In November, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) asked the IRS to investigate the center, pointing to its massive payments to a for-profit company controlled by its own director, along with other transgressions. CREW argues that Berman's group is about protecting industry, not aiding consumers, and therefore is not engaging in the sort of charitable activities that entitle it to tax-exempt status. Berman has dismissed the allegations as littered with "non-factual items" and "misstatements of the law" -- again without saying specifically how. Yet by any measure, CREW has a compelling case. It's partly based on hard evidence: a host of internal Philip Morris documents that discussed the 1995 formation of Berman's group (then called the Guest Choice Network) in remarkably unguarded terms. The documents -- correspondence between Berman and Philip Morris, plus an internal Philip Morris memo, all released during discovery on the Big Tobacco lawsuits -- provide an extraordinary glimpse into the creation of a corporate front group, one apparently designed to use the language of consumer choice to advance the interests of major corporations. In a 1995 letter to a Philip Morris executive asking for startup funds for Guest Choice, Berman wrote: "The concept is to unite the restaurant and hospitality industries in a campaign to defend their consumers and marketing programs from anti-smoking, anti-drinking, anti-meat activists ... I would like to solicit Philip Morris for an initial contribution of $600,000." In another 1995 memo to Philip Morris, Berman explicitly described his strategy as follows: A broad coalition of industries in defense of the consumer -- and generally devoted to fighting regulations -- would provide effective PR cover for the tobacco giant's specific goals. "If externally perceived as driven by restaurant interests, there will be more flexibility and creativity allowed than if it is 'owned' by Philip Morris," Berman wrote. Equally revealing is a 1995 internal memo written by a Philip Morris exec who approved of Berman's strategy. "[Berman's] proposed solution would broaden the focus of the 'smoking issue,' and expand into the bigger picture of over-regulation," the memo reads. "We believe his proposal is worthy of testing." (For more documents, go to www.citizensforethics.org.) This is remarkable stuff. How often do we get such an intimate peek at a major corporation's decision to bankroll an astroturf group? The only remaining question is whether the IRS will allow Berman's outfit to continue operating as a tax-exempt nonprofit. The group has changed names and focus over the years, and it no longer takes tobacco money. Yet it's difficult to avoid the conclusion that Berman's MO hasn't changed. His activities continue to be less about educating consumers than about safeguarding industry profits. As Berman himself put it in the Chain Leader interview: "The fact is that other groups drive consumer behavior on meat, alcohol, fat, sugar, tobacco, and caffeine with outrageous quotes, exaggeration, junk science, and even violent acts ... . Few companies spend any serious time ... developing long-term strategies to meet these challenges. Thus our clients have encouraged us to fill this void." Which is exactly what Berman has done."

"Bakhtiyar Bakhtiyarov, a Jew, had never been to a synagogue before immigrating to Cleveland from Belarus three years ago. He views his visit to The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood as an exercise in freedom, one far removed from his despairing year spent in a KGB prison not long before. Judaism, he says, "is a religion based on wisdom." Bakhtiyarov and his wife Diana Cherish, both of whom had journalism experience in their native country, now have the freedom to put that idea into print. Last fall, the couple launched "Jewish Prospect," a monthly insert into their locally produced weekly Russian-language newspaper, Prospect. Jewish Prospect focuses on Jewish customs, history and traditions, they explain. Recent articles carried by the tabloid-style newspaper include a front-page color photo spread on the United Jewish Communities' 2004 General Assembly held in Cleveland last November ... Bakhtiyarov was director of Belarus state television and a vocal supporter of government opposition leader Gennady Karpenko. One day, he relates, some men showed up at his office and ordered him into a waiting car. The burly Belarusian was brought to a "secret, white-collar" KGB prison, dubbed "America" by inmates, as it was built from the same blueprints as several U.S. prisons. It was among other political dissidents in "America" where Bakhtiyarov would spend the next year. Here, he was ordered to create false information smearing Karpenko ... Prospect has been published for three years and is circulated for free to about 5,000 readers in and around Greater Cleveland. Jewish Prospect was added six months ago. It is paid for by advertising from, among others, the Federation, Solon Chabad, and Hebrew Academy of Cleveland. Many of the articles are written by local Russian Jews, while some of the religious and historical pieces are penned by the couple themselves or by Orthodox ex-Clevelanders currently studying in New York. The couple handles editing and layout, and Diana also acts as Jewish Prospect's advertising manager. As a child growing up in Minsk, Bakhtiyarov says, his family secretly observed the Jewish holidays amidst the stifling atmosphere of Soviet Russia. "When the KGB had me, I felt like my life was over," he says. "Now I have freedom, and it's like a rebirth. But the only way many Russian Jews experience freedom is by pursuing money. They don't care about what it's like to be a Jew ... Ultimately, Bakhtiyarov wants Russian Jews in Cleveland "to love and respect their roots." This is a journey the Belarusian is still making. Although he's yet to visit the land where Judaism first blossomed, Bakhtiyarov recently had a tree planted in Israel in his mother's name."

"With historical detective-story biographies on the rise, "The Orientalist" may well be an early entry in a new literary genre. Armchair historians with a bit of wanderlust will be rewarded with the engaging tale of the life and times of Lev Nussimbaum, an inadvertent adventurer in the 1920s and 1930s and author of the World War I romance, and Azeri national novel, "Ali and Nino." But no less entertaining is the story of the sleuthing of biographer Tom Reiss as he pieced together the disparate shards of Nussimbaum's life ... Born in 1905 to a wealthy Jewish family in Baku, Azerbaijan, he came of age just as the walls were closing in on people with money (in the form of the Bolshevik Revolution) and people of Jewish heritage (Hitler's Germany)... It wasn't long before Lev evolved into what Reiss terms an "ideological Houdini," very convincingly passing himself off as a Muslim under the names of Kurban Said and Essad Bey to reach the apex of the social and literary circles in Germany and Austria. "Notorious Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel faces immediate arrest and prosecution for spreading hate on his return to Germany, German authorities said Friday. Zundel, who is slated for deportation from Canada following a scathing Federal Court decision, is wanted for running afoul of German laws against denying the Holocaust. He will be picked up immediately and then arrested," a German official who requested anonymity said Friday. "If there is an arrest warrant, then we have to prosecute if he's in our jurisdiction." Of particular importance will be determining whether Zundel, a German national, is responsible for the website that bears his name and what exactly it contains, the official said. "It will certainly take a certain time to check everything." Immigration authorities did not immediately return calls on when Zundel would be sent back. However, Zundel's lawyer Peter Lindsay said Friday he did not expect that to happen for at least another week or two. "I have it in writing from the Crown that they would warn us before he was deported so we would have a chance to go to court (to seek a stay)." Lindsay said it's only fair to wait for the Supreme Court of Canada to decide if it will hear Zundel's complaint that the judge was biased and whether the secretive process of security-related detentions is constitutional. However, B'nai Brith Canada said Canada should kick Zundel out immediately. "We are consulting with the German Embassy in order to ascertain how soon they will accept Zundel back to his native country," said Frank Dimant, executive-director of the Jewish group. "There must be no more excuses or further delays." On Thursday, Federal Court Justice Pierre Blais smoothed the way to expel Zundel, 65, on the grounds that he is a white supremacist hatemonger who poses a threat to national security. Zundel has spent more than four decades in Canada, the last two years in solitary confinement in a Toronto jail under a national security certificate. In his 63-page decision cheered by Jewish organizations, Blais concluded Zundel was a hypocrite who nurtured his extremist neo-Nazi extremist views behind a veil of pacifism. "Zundel's activities are not only a threat to Canada's national security but also a threat to the international community of nations," Blais wrote. Zundel supporter Paul Fromm said he was "bitterly disappointed" by the ruling, adding there was no evidence linking Zundel to violence. "We're not dealing with a man who's a terrorist. He has the wrong political views," Fromm said from Winnipeg. "That's a shocking departure from what most Canadians think of when they think of a terrorist" ... Despite his long stay in Canada, during which he has had frequent legal and human rights battles, Zundel was never able to convert his landed immigrant status into citizenship. "Germany closed down on Friday a Turkish-language Islamist daily newspaper that has denied the Holocaust. Interior Minister Otto Schily put a banning order on the Yeni Akit publishing house, which brings out the European edition of Anadoluda Vakit. The title means "the times in Anatolia". Prosecutors have been collecting evidence against the newspaper for months. The Interior Ministry in Berlin said the closure was ordered because Vakit had incited to ethnic hate. The newspaper had attacked Israel, Jews in general and the fundamentals of western society. Schily said Friday officials had impounded property as well as evidence at the company's offices in a southern Frankfurt suburb."

"The Jewish Board of Education this week banned gay American Rabbi Steven Greenberg from addressing students at Johannesburg’s King David High School — during the school’s “tolerance week”. The soft-spoken Greenberg, who holds a philosophy degree, is visiting South Africa to break down anti-gay prejudice among Jews. However, he has not been welcomed by official Jewish institutions. Greenberg’s tour, to promote his book Wrestling with G-d and the documentary Trembling before G-d, in which he appears, has been supported by liberal South African Jewry. But lawyer and tour organiser David Bilchitz has circulated a list of interventions by Jewish authorities intended to undermine Greenberg’s visit. These include an accusation that “rabbinic interference led to the cancellation of a screening at the Rabbi Cyril Harris Community Centre”, and that the Beth Din forced kosher restaurants to remove posters and flyers for the movie from their establishments. The drama came to a head this week when Greenberg was supposed to address grade 11 and 12 pupils of King David High School, Victory Park, as part of a tolerance week programme. By its own admission, the Jewish Board of Education stepped in and forbade Greenberg’s appearance. Bilchitz’s letter to the media says school staff “organised a private event at the Beaconsfield club across the road. As a result of interference from the Beth Din this event too was cancelled.”

British Charity Spurns Jerry Springer Musical Donation,

"A British cancer charity has turned down money raised by a gala performance of the profanity-laden musical "Jerry Springer - The Opera" after pressure from a Christian lobby group. Christian Voice persuaded Scottish charity Maggie's Centers that accepting the "tainted" money would alienate potential donors. Producers of the musical had offered the charity 10 pounds a ticket and performers had agreed to give up their wages for a gala night. The total sum would have amounted to about 3,000 pounds ($5,700). Maggie's Centers, which provides support for cancer patients and their careers across Britain, said in a statement that after Christian Voice told it the gift would "upset Christians all over the world," it had decided to decline the money "To risk causing offence to anyone seemed unnecessary," the charity said. Jerry Springer - The Opera has been on the London stage for three years. It features Jesus, Mary and God as guests on Springer's show, and the script includes up to 300 swear words. Christian Voice has brought a private blasphemy prosecution against the BBC after the corporation screened it on television. Christian Voice National Director Stephen Green told BBC Radio Four's Today program that the cancer charity had "made a rare decision in Britain today to honor the Christian faith. "We explained that they were in grave risk of alienating Christian donors ... and cancer patients, by accepting money that had been raised from a performance of filth and blasphemy," he said."

Jewish settlers poison Palestinian village water supply,

"The inhabitants of a Palestinian village in the northern West Bank are appealing to the world community to exert pressure on Israel to put an end to the recurrent poisoning of their only water supply source by Jewish settlers. Last week, heavily-armed settlers from the illegal colony of Yitzhar, near Nablus, vandalized and sabotaged the sole water supply source upon which the nearby village of Madama depends. The latest sabotage and poisoning is the seventh of its kind during the past three years according to village officials. Yitzhar was established more than 20 years ago on confiscated land belonging to the people of Madama and is inhabited by pugnacious Talmudic settlers seeking to expel non-Jews from Palestine and Israel. According to Madama's local council head Ayed Kamal, Yetzhar has always been "a source of provocation, vandalism and organized terror." "Our people are going through perpetual suffering at the hands of those criminals. They come in broad daylight and throw filthy material like diapers and poisonous substance inside the spring, and when we complain to the Israeli authorities, they tell us the army can't do anything about it," said during a telephone interview with PIC Monday. Kamal said the ultimate goal of the settlers was to force "us to leave our village and our land." Last year as many as 12 children of the village were diagnosed with liver infections and many others developed stomach pain resulting from contaminated water. Moreover, the Yetzhar settlers burned down large swathes of grain crops belonging to the villagers of Madama, often in the full view of the Israeli army. This eventually forced the Palestinians to leave their land in the contiguity of Yetzhar uncultivated. Palestinian villagers as well as some international aid workers suspect there is a real connivance between the settlers and the Israeli army in the area. "Of course there is connivance, the Israeli army is well aware of what the settlers are doing to the Palestinians but it turns a blind eye," said a foreign aide worker who asked for anonymity. The London-based British Charity Oxfam fixed the water system at Madama, including covering the spring's opening with concrete. However, every time the spring was in system and new pipes were installed, the settlers would come to smash the pipes and contaminate the spring with hazardous materials, such as diapers and dead chickens. In two instances, the settlers actually opened fire on Palestinians and foreign aid workers in the area. An Oxfam spokesman said Oxfam would once again seek to re-fix the spring opening. "We want to help those helpless people, we hope the Israeli authorities will get serious with the settlers and stop their actions." An Israeli army spokesman said in a terse statement it was looking into the matter. Last year, Israeli settlers in southern Hebron were caught throwing dead chicken and other contaminants into the main water well at the village of Tuwwani, 15 kilometers south-west of Hebron. The same settlers on three occasions attacked and seriously injured members of a North-American based Christian peace-making volunteers, accusing them of "upsetting the balance of power" in the area. The latest of such attacks took place last week near the village of Tuwwani when armed settlers attacked and assaulted two Christian peace-makers who were escorting local Palestinian shepherds fearing attacks by settlers."

This city, with its rich history of strong political-ethnic alliances, may be in a state of reorientation — at least as far as the Jewish community is concerned. With five candidates in the running, there is no consensus on who will garner the majority of Jewish votes, but all the candidates are making overtures and it’s easy to understand why. Complicating the matter further is that the Messiah is predicted to come from King David's line.
