"It sounded like a testosterone-fueled fantasy, the kind of bizarre imaginary world of feverish mayhem that might be embraced by some teenaged video gamer, as the Jewish newsweekly The Forward put it, or perhaps the ranting of a pudgy little nebbish of a man who had read one too many Tom Clancy novels. Instead, it was the stark and darkly disturbing details contained in federal court documents charging the Pinellas County podiatrist, along with his wife and a close friend and confidant, a dentist by training, with a raft of federal crimes. It is a matter of some consternation to the Muslim community of central Florida that Goldstein and his two accomplices had gotten off comparatively lightly for their parts in what even prosecutors acknowledge was a hate-driven plot to murder perhaps scores of innocent people. None of the trio, not even [Robert] Goldstein, the architect of the plan, were charged under terrorism statutes, or for that matter, under hate crime statutes. It is no small irony, some Muslim leaders have said, that at a time when some in government had claimed a right since restricted by the U.S. Supreme Court to designate some accused plotters as terrorists, and to hold them for years if deemed necessary without ever filing formal charges against them, all three admitted conspirators in the Goldstein case received speedy hearings and comparatively lenient sentences. On June 19, 2003, Goldstein, a nominal Jew by all accounts, was sentenced to 12 years and seven months in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy to violate civil rights, plotting to damage a religious facility and unlawful possession of firearms. A week earlier, his non-Jewish ex-wife, who now goes by her maiden name, Persinger, was sentenced to three years for possession of illegal bombs that her husband had hidden in the bedroom closet of their posh Seminole townhouse. In May of that year, Michael Hardee, a 50-year-old dentist, was also sentenced to three years and five months for his part in the conspiracy. Although the bizarre case, which received little attention outside Florida, has run its course in the federal court system, nagging questions still remain. Among them, The Forward posed these: "What led Goldstein, by all accounts an assimilated Jew, intermarried and living in what, according to a 1999 study by geographer Dr. Ira Sheskin of the University
of Miami, is a typically assimilated Jewish community, a place where Christmas trees are not uncommon in nominally Jewish households, where the intermarriage rate is slightly higher than in many places, and where anti-Semitism is no more rabid than anywhere else in Florida, to take up arms as a self appointed avenger of the terrorist attacks of September 11 on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon? What made this peripheral member of an average Jewish community decide to plot what has been described as a terrorist attack to make a statement 'for his people'? Even more troubling is this question: Was Goldstein a terrorist, and if so, was he treated differently than he would have been had he been an Arab or Muslim accused of a similar offense? ... There was a similar case in 1997 involving Harry Shapiro, a Kosher butcher from the similarly assimilated city of Jacksonville. Shapiro was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a 1997 plot to bomb a conservative synagogue to prevent former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres from speaking there ... Nor did Goldstein personally stand out as a particularly nationalistic Jew. In fact, as fellow physicians told the BBC not long after Goldstein's arrest, the nondescript little doctor didn't really stand out at all. As the Associated Press reported in a March 2, 2003, story on the arrest, friends and neighbors generally regarded Goldstein as "a regular guy who manned a suburban podiatry practice and tooled around in a black Porsche Boxter," purchased with the proceeds of his $144,000-a-year practice ...When police arrived, they found Kristi Goldstein outside the couple's townhouse, visibly agitated, declaring that her husband had threatened again to kill her and that he was holed-up inside with a large cache of weapons. The authorities responded with restraint. For 30 minutes, police calmly tried to coax the podiatrist out of his fortress-like townhouse, a place he had booby trapped, secured with what the BBC described as "trip wires and scanned by security cameras." Finally, Goldstein surrendered, and his wife, still upset, gave police permission to search the townhouse. What they found was mind-boggling, even by the standards of weapon-friendly central Florida. The way prosecutors later described the scene, they found a staggering arsenal of weapons, nearly 40 properly licensed guns including revolvers, a 50-caliber sniper rifle, and semi-automatic assault weapons, enough to outfit a platoon of commandos. There were armor-piercing rockets, 25,000 rounds of ammunition and homemade napalm. There was a stash of explosives as well; hand grenades, a five-gallon "gasoline bomb" with a timer attached, and a significant amount of homemade C4, a powerful plastic explosive. In all, there were more than two-dozen bombs crammed into the cozy townhouse, four of them stuffed into the Goldstein's bedroom closet. It was a large enough cache of explosives that it could easily have leveled the townhouse and beyond, if Goldstein had decided to push the plunger, an agent for the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said. What's more, Goldstein had also collected the components for making many more, not to mention the sizable library of how-to manuals and bomb making recipes he had amassed ... The truth was the guns were the tip of iceberg. In addition to the weapons and the explosives, authorities discovered a list of 50 local mosques and Islamic centers, along with what would come to be known as Goldstein's "mission template," an 11-point, three-page plan detailing the plans for his attack. By the time of his arrest, Goldstein had chosen his target from the list of 50. It was to be the Islamic Society of Pinellas County Mosque and Cultural Center ... Goldstein, who had never been a particularly observant Jew, had suddenly found himself swept up in a wave of cultural fervor and was prepared to become a soldier of solidarity with the victims of terrorism in Israel. According to the Associated Press, Goldstein "wanted to make a statement for 'his people' because of ongoing hostilities between Israel and the Palestinians in the Middle East. ... There was, [Goldstein's lawyer Myles] Malman said, no question that Goldstein planned to destroy the mosque and community center the "physical building" as Malman put it. But Malman said he was convinced that the rest of the plan, the detailed plot to gun down or knife victims as they ran for their lives, was all a fantasy. "He never actually planned to do that," Malman insists ... Goldstein's plan, prosecutors were quoted as saying at the time, involved "real people, real locations, real bombs." His target was not an individual Muslim, but "an entire population of people" ... The question arises: If prosecutors really were as convinced as they claimed that Goldstein was not only a legitimate threat to an innocent group of people, but that he was motivated by political and ethnic feelings, why, particularly after the events of 9-11, was he not charged with terrorism? ... Goldstein himself, the architect of the conspiracy and a self-styled Rambo, was sentenced, after he finally entered a guilty plea in April 2003, to 12 years and seven months in federal prison. To members of the local Islamic community in Pinellas County and beyond, the comparatively lenient treatment that Goldstein and the other defendants received smacked of a double standard. It was, they said, unimaginable that despite the vast array of weapons seized, despite the damning documents, federal authorities decided not to level terrorism charges after Goldstein pleaded guilty only to possessing the bombs. Even before the verdict was handed down, that sparked a burning controversy in Florida. Ahmed Bedier, a spokesman for the local chapter of the Council for American Islamic Relations and a regular worshipper at the targeted mosque, told The Forward that he wondered whether federal prosecutors would have been more inclined to prosecute Goldstein and his accomplices under terrorism statutes a move which would have doubled their sentences if they had been Muslim. "That's the question we've been asking all along," says Bedier. "His acts fit the definition of terrorism regardless of who's committing it." In fact, Bedier contends, there are many in the Muslim community in Florida who noted with bitter irony a marked difference between the way federal prosecutors handled the Goldstein case and the way the feds handled another alleged ethnically motivated plot, the case of 20-year-old Imran Mandhai, of Hollywood, who was charged under terrorism statutes in 2002 after authorities determined that he was plotting to blow up a National Guard Armory and a power station. As in Goldstein's case, Mandhai had concocted his plot as part of an ethnic and politically motivated paramilitary campaign, authorities alleged. In the Mandhai case, authorities claimed that the goal was to trigger a jihad, and in October 2002, Mandhai was sentenced to 11 years and eight months. In fact, that sentence was a disappointment for federal prosecutors, however, who had hoped to use the sentencing guidelines contained in the terrorism statute to send Mandhai to prison for up to 191-anda-half years."

"President Bush promoted tax- and government-finance expert Harvey Rosen yesterday to chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, the Bush administration said. One of Rosen's top responsibilities will be helping the administration craft a strategy to sell Bush's Social Security plan for individual investment accounts, an effort facing resistance in Congress. However, Rosen has told associates he may return to Princeton University in the summer. Rosen, 55, has been a member of the economic council since October 2003 and served in the Treasury Department in Bush's father's administration."

They also included Gov. John Baldacci´s $197 million bond package, which would provide funds for land acquisition and conservation, highways and bridges and a statewide biomedical research and development fund ... The hearing, which drew an overflow crowd for much of the day, was held a day after Republican lawmakers packed another State House room to warn that Mainers should be cautious about piling new public debt on top of hundreds of millions of dollars in existing debts ... Former House Speaker Michael Saxl asked the committee to approve a $1 million bond issue to help build and establish a Holocaust Human Rights Center at the University of Maine at Augusta. With Holocaust survivors and witnesses aging, it´s important to start work as soon as possible on the $2.8 million center, which would include videotapes of those who lived through the horrors of the Holocaust telling their stories, said Saxl."

"In December 6, 1998, Hugo Chávez of the MVR Party (Movimiento de la Quinta República—Movement of the Fifth Republic) won the presidential election by a whopping 56.2%, one of the largest majority of votes attained in the history of Venezuela and breaking the pattern of a two party political system that offered little practical variation at all for the previous 40 years ... The Israeli Mossad is also said to have taken part in the plot against the Social Democracy, but they were able to cover their tracks better than their American counterparts; evidence still exists however, of a Mossad spy in Venezuelan soil during the coup, who quickly fled once Chávez returned to power. The government of ex-Spanish conservative President Aznar is also said to have taken part in the coup against Chávez, and in 2004, the current President of Spain, Zapatero, publicly apologized to Chávez on behalf of all Spain for the despicable involvement of Aznar in the coup. Zapatero was so outraged by the evidence he received from Spain's own intelligence records of the previous government and its involvement in the coup, that he went on a firing spree, firing everyone in his own government who had collaborated in the coup against Chávez. One has to remember also that Aznar was one of the most ardent supporters of Bush's invasion of Iraq as well. Hated by 92% of Spaniards, Aznar tries to stay as far away from Spain as he can by being in the US most of his time. White House advisor Elliott Abrams, who was one of the intellectual architects of the overthrow of Allende in Chile in 1973, was another key player in planning the coup against Chávez in 2002. The Washington Post reported in April of 2002 that the US embassy in Venezuela had violated its diplomatic function and instead had become a tool in the overthrow of Chávez by giving advice and monetary support to anyone willing to topple Chávez's government, whether it be people in the Venezuelan media, the military, businessmen, or politicians. Indeed an anonymous Defense Department official bluntly put it "we were sending signals that we don't like this guy (Chávez)".

"Israel and NATO pledged Thursday to deeper ties during the first visit by a NATO chief to the country, although a top Israeli official denied the Jewish state had any ambitions to join the military alliance. Speaking at a press conference with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Israeli Foreign Minister Shalom said Israel was looking to upgrade its relationship with NATO. "This is an historic visit because it is the first time that the head of NATO has visited our country. It reflects the mutual goals of deepening ongoing ties and realising the potential for cooperation," Shalom said. "We want to move from a dialogue relationship to a partnership relationship," he said. "We think the time has come to have more cooperation in the security, political and military fields." De Hoop Scheffer's trip comes as the military alliance is seeking to ramp up closer cooperation with members of the so-called Mediterranean Dialogue countries. "I am here today to see how we can give form to a stronger relationship between NATO and Israel," de Hoop Scheffer said. "What NATO seeks is a strengthening of the relationship within the framework of the Mediterranean Dialogue."

Fish will present a documentary, "Columbia Unbecoming," about professors using classrooms as political platforms. As a Jewish student studying theology, she refused to accept her diploma from Harvard Divinity School in 2003 because of the gift. The sheik, who ruled the United Arab Emirates, had sponsored a think tank that spread Holocaust denials and anti-Semitism. Fish is now a regional director of The David Project, an organization focused on understanding the conflict in the Middle East."

"A week ago I said it was not my intention to apologise to the journalist from Daily Mail group or his employers. Upon a further week of reflection in which I have read everything written in the press about this controversy and after considerable debate with many Londoners I have decided to stand by that position. There will therefore be no apology or expression of regret to the Daily Mail group. To the Daily Mail group journalist [Oliver Finegold] I say this. You are responsible for your own actions. That you are paid by Daily Mail group to do the job you do is not a defence for your behaviour. Pursuing me along the pavement thrusting your tape recorder at me whilst repeatedly barking the same question when I had clearly indicated I did not wish to be interviewed by you is not acceptable behaviour by you or any other journalist. Indeed a member of the public behaving in this way could find themselves arrested for a breach of peace. Many other journalists will confirm I have made similar comments to them over the last twenty-four years. You are the first to complain ... In all the tens of thousands of words devoted to this story in the last two weeks no paper has been able to show that my words contravened any clause in any of the Acts of Parliament that deal with racism, or anti-semitism or that they were anti-semitic or racist. Is it the case that whilst not racist or anti-semitic my words were so offensive they should never have been uttered? Clearly the the leading Jewish newspaper the Jewish Chronicle does not think so. On February 7 th 2003 they published a letter accusing Professors Hilary and Stephen Rose of being kapos (concentration camp inmates serving as guards). The Roses complained to the Jewish Chronicle and the Press Complaints Commission. The Press Complaints Commission rejected the Roses complaint on the grounds that the Jewish Chronicle had printed a letter of rebuttal on the Roses. Clearly, the Jewish Chronicle and the Press Complaints Commission did not feel that this term diminished the holocaust. If we want to see an example of an inappropriate use of the term holocaust we need look no further than the Daily Mail writer Quentin Letts who described Labour MP Andrew Dismore as “a Holocaust bore”. I refer to the holocaust because it is the most extreme example of evil in my own array of moral reference points. Over the last two weeks my main concern has been that many Jewish Londoners have been disturbed by this whipped up row. I do not equate the actions of one reporter with the total abdication of responsibility shown by those who were complicit to whatever degree in the horrors of the holocaust. But I do believe that abdicating responsibility for one’s actions by the excuse that “I am only doing my job” is the thin end of the immoral wedge that at its other extreme leads to the crimes and horrors of Auschwitz, Rwanda and Bosnia ... Clearly Londoners share my view. I have lost count of the number of times I have been approached by Londoners over the last two weeks and have been urged very forcefully not to apologise. Since this row erupted we have received over 1500 letters and emails from the public. 74 per cent have expressed their support for me, with 26 per cent against—a margin of support of three to one. Not for the first time in my years in public life the views of ordinary people on the street are overwhelmingly at odds with much of the media."

"Yosef Epstein, 11, took the 3-D approach when he decided to teach his classmates at the Columbia Jewish Day School which animals are and are not kosher. He built a 3-D model of a cow that flipped up to show a transparent stomach (cows are kosher because they chew cud) and filled a washtub with magnetic model fish marked “kosher” and “non-kosher.” (Fish with scales: kosher. Without scales? Not kosher.) Epstein and the other 90 students at the school, located on the grounds of Beth Shalom Synagogue, are taking part in a science fair with a twist. It’s a “Torah and Science Fair,” which started Wednesday and runs through this evening. Everyone from the 2-year-old preschoolers to the eighth-graders spent the past month working on research projects that focused on both science and Jewish studies ... The Torah-focused displays bring to life many of the laws followed by observant Jews. “Cows are kosher because they chew their cud,” Yosef said, lifting the spotted outer coat of his painted cow model to show the diagram. He had also made clay examples of kosher hooves (noncloven) and nonkosher (cloven, like the feet of pigs). Visitors could use a magnetic fish pole to try to snag a “kosher” plastic fish from the assortment in the pond. Those who did got the fish as a keepsake."

Disney to Turn Miramax Into 'Elite SWAT Team',

"Walt Disney Co. plans to relocate its Miramax Films unit to Los Angeles, where a streamlined version of the arthouse titan will operate like "an elite SWAT team," according to a Disney source. The two companies began a new series of meetings Wednesday to determine the terms of a separation agreement that will see Miramax co-chairmen Bob and Harvey Weinstein leave the New York-based firm in September after several years of strained relations with Disney. According to studio sources, Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook plans to hire a new executive to run a reconfigured version of the specialty division, which will be located in Burbank under Disney production president Nina Jacobson. "It'll be the old-model Miramax before they got a taste for big-ticket pictures," added the Disney source, who further described it as "a filmmaker-friendly environment where they'll be searching for new talent, putting out about 10 movies a year, with five acquisitions." Disney is expected to consolidate Miramax's back-office financial accounting, distribution collections and incremental overhead. The Weinsteins are in the process of raising financing for the New Co., which is the temporary name they have given their new venture. They have enlisted help from such Wall Street companies as Salomon Smith Barney and Goldman Sachs, both of which helped them to assemble $420 million in equity to help finance films like "Cold Mountain." That deal fell apart when Disney refused to participate in equity financing. Pathe, a European distribution and production company, also might be a player in the Weinsteins' future company. He immediately smashes the club transfer record and promises to make the team the best in the continent. Yet this is not about England, Chelsea and Roman Abramovich but about Brazil, Corinthians and a British entrepreneur called Kia Joorabchian. Last week South American football was in a state of shock with the announcement that the Argentina international Carlos Tévez was moving from Boca Juniors to Corinthians for $22m (£11.4m). Tévez, 20, was the leading scorer in this year's Olympics and is considered his country's most exciting young player. It was by far the most a Brazilian club had ever paid for a player and it was also unprecedented that such a promising talent had moved within his own continent - let alone to a nation considered arch-rivals - rather than to Europe. The Brazilian league is broke and clubs' finances usually depend on selling players abroad ... The Tévez deal is, however, a remarkable coup for the London-based Joorabchian, whose firm Media Sport Investment has promised to plough another $35m (£18.2m) into the team. "We sold it to a group that [Berezovsky] had an interest in," he said, adding that he has not done business with Berezovsky since. The Kommersant deal started the speculation about Berezovsky's involvement, which appeared strengthened by comments in the Brazilian press attributed to Alberto Dualib, the Corinthians president. In transcripts of a tape recording, he said that on a recent visit to the UK with Joorabchian the two had visited Berezovsky's home near London. Joorabchian has never been involved in football before, although he has a wide portfolio of business interests. In the register of directorships at Companies House he gives two different dates of birth - both make him 33 - and two nationalities, Canadian and British ... Brazilian wariness about Joorabchian was high lighted by the fact that he is using Renato Duprat as his intermediary. Duprat is a controversial figure; he used to run a hospital and health insurance plan that went bust and he is now facing legal action. One of those against the deal was Rubens Approbato Machado, a former president of the Brazilian equivalent of the Bar Council. He said that investigations of Joorabchian's business links had raised more questions than answers. "Many doubts have been raised about the aptness of the person behind [MSI]," he said. "The governing body of the World Council of Churches has asked its members to consider bringing economic pressure on companies that benefit from Israeli policy in the Palestinian territories. American Jewish leaders have condemned the recommendation as biased. The Central Committee of the Geneva-based ecumenical group said Monday that its members should look to the Presbyterian Church, (U.S.A.), as a model for pursuing divestment. The Presbyterians voted last year to research divesting from companies that profit from the Israeli presence in the West Bank and Gaza — a strategy the World Council committee said was "commendable in both method and manner" and "uses criteria rooted in faith." However, the Presbyterian vote sparked a crisis in U.S. Jewish-Christian relations that remains unresolved despite several meetings between leaders of both faiths. U.S. Jewish leaders from across the political spectrum said the approach was one-sided, since the Presbyterians made no concurrent demand that the Palestinian Authority work to end suicide bombings against Israelis. Jewish leaders predicted any divestment would harden Israel against a negotiated settlement, ultimately hurting the Palestinians. The Simon Wiesenthal Center, the international Jewish human rights group based in Los Angeles, has asked the Presbyterians to suspend their move toward divestment in light of the revival of talks between Israel and the new Palestinian government. The World Council panel noted in its statement that "there is a renewal of hope" in the Mideast and said it welcomed "that momentum is building for peace," but said "there is not yet a reduction of the threats that separate the parties to the conflict." The Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish civil rights group based in New York, chided the World Council panel for making the recommendation without consulting Jewish leaders. The World Council says its 340 Protestant and Orthodox Christian member denominations represent about 400 million people. Mainline American Protestant churches belong to the council and some members of those denominations are already exploring the idea of divestment."

"The World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee reminded the Council's member churches that "with investment funds, they have an opportunity to use those funds responsibly in support of peaceful solutions" to the Israel/Palestine conflict. The WCC governing body encouraged the Council's member churches "to give serious consideration to economic measures that are equitable, transparent and non-violent" as a new way to work for peace, by looking at ways to not participate economically in illegal activities related to the Israeli occupation. In that sense, the committee affirmed "economic pressure, appropriately and openly applied," as a "means of action". As an example, the WCC governing body mentions the "process of phased, selective divestment from multinational corporations involved in the occupation" now being implemented by the Presbyterian Church (USA). "This action is commendable in both method and manner, [and] uses criteria rooted in faith." The recommendation, approved one day before the end of the 15-22 February meeting of the Council's governing body in Geneva, is contained in a minute addressed to WCC member churches. In it, the committee also notes that "in the conflict in Israel and Palestine there is a renewal of hope, although there is not yet a reduction of the threats that separate the parties". The document points out that "illegal activities in occupied territory continue as if a viable peace for both peoples is not a possibility", and that multinational corporations have been involved in a number of "violations of international law" within that territory. The committee's 150 members affirm: "The concern here is to abide by law as the foundation for a just peace." "We are not blind to facts and must not be complicit in them even unwittingly."
[The interesting thing here is that a professor publicized the pro-Israel stance and roots of many of York University big money backers, they of course were Jews, and they tried to squash the critical professor -- David Noble -- into the dirt. "TORONTO - While York University and its faculty union won't discuss the status of his complaint, a professor demanding $10 million in damages and an apology from the university for alleged defamation says he's confident he'll win if it goes to arbitration. Social science professor David Noble maintains the university damaged his reputation, discriminated against him, and violated his academic freedom when it issued a press release Nov. 19, 2004, condemning material he distributed at a campus event a day earlier as "targeting Jewish members of the York community." "By assassinating my character, I assume they hoped to silence me," said Noble, who is Jewish. The York University Faculty Association agrees with the professor and is formally supporting his grievance, which also calls for the university to send out a second press release acknowledging the first one was in error and a breach of the union's contract with the administration. The press release appeared to bring the university and its fundraising organization, the York University Foundation, together with student groups Hillel and Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights to denounce the material, of which Noble distributed several copies at an SPHR film night. But the pro-Palestinian group issued its own statement disowning its participation in the university's release several days later. Noble's two-page document suggested the university's recent decisions to crack down on pro-Palestinian activists and bring the Toronto Argonauts' football stadium on campus may have been influenced by the political views and business interests of some of the foundation's board members. The document linked several board members to Israeli fundraising organizations, alleging the foundation is "biased by the presence and influence of staunch pro- Israel lobbyists, activists, and fundraising agencies." "It identifies the directors of the York University Foundation and some of the organizations to which they are affiliated, and the identification of various organizations that raise money for and lobby for Israel," Noble said. That's it," the professor added. "So, there's absolutely zero ethnic identification." Within 24 hours of the document's distribution on campus, the administration issued its press release. The next day, there was an article in the Globe and Mail; coverage in the Toronto Star followed the day after. In the release, the president of the university, Lorna Marsden, referred to the document as "highly offensive material, which singles out certain members of the York community on the basis of their ethnicity and alleged political views." According to Noble, despite the union's insistence it be taken down, the release is still available on the university's website. "To be clear, the university did not allege anti-Semitism nor did we name the individual," said Nancy White, York's director of media relations. "However, it is our
view that this kind of material diminishes our sense of community in a university environment." White disputed the allegations in Noble's document. "We don't take positions on foreign policy matters," she said. In SPHR's statement Nov. 24, the group claimed the administration asked two of its spokespersons to condemn material they hadn't seen. Noble's document was appended to that statement, which slammed "continuing and dangerous attempts to conflate opposition to Zionism and Israeli policies with unqualified anti-Semitism." Furat Al Yassin, who was quoted as SPHR president in the university's release, was out of the country and unavailable for comment, according to Shadi Hajjara, the group's Toronto regional co-ordinator, who said he supports Noble's $10-million grievance."

"Stephen Herbits has suddenly gotten angry. For the past hour, as a picturesque evening snow fell lightly on Madison Avenue, he has talked expansively about his background as a Washington insider, his twenty years as a key Seagram’s executive, and his current role as secretary-general of the World Jewish Congress. Then I mention that several people from other Jewish organizations have said they were not at all surprised by the difficulties the World Jewish Congress has been facing, that its weak administration and sloppy record-keeping were an open secret. The WJC was, according to one insider, “a volcano waiting to erupt" ... Since 1979, [Israel] Singer and billionaire Edgar Bronfman have skillfully and productively run the powerful World Jewish Congress. But for the past eighteen months, the WJC has been embroiled in a vicious internal battle, fueled by money, politics, and vast egos. The fight has been so acrimonious and mean-spirited that it threatens the very existence of the 68-year-old institution.
Accusations of mismanagement, bizarre bank transactions, stolen e-mails and computer files, intimidation, and cover-ups, which stretch from New York to Geneva to Jerusalem, have reached a decibel level that has attracted the attention of the New York State attorney general’s office, which is in the midst of a preliminary investigation. Though the attacks focus mostly on Singer, Herbits, a longtime employee of Bronfman’s who was brought onboard six months ago to manage the crisis, seems to take it very personally. “There are no illegalities in Israel Singer’s behavior, and that is not true of some of the leaders of these other organizations,” he says, standing now. "I know it and they know it and they better be careful, because if they cause enough problems in the press, then this organization won’t be the only one that has a preliminary inquiry from the attorney general’s office. Then you’ll see some real fireworks.”
Though the accusations he makes about other Jewish organizations are serious and sweeping—false IRS filings, misuse of funds, “outlandish” benefits packages, and lying to the government—Herbits refuses to name names. “You’re not going to get me to do that,” he snaps. “I’m not going to play that game.”
But given the chance, he doesn’t back down. Instead he ratchets up the rhetoric a notch. “I’m not going to sit by and let this organization take the rap for their behavior,” he says. “If we get into that kind of pissing match, this organization ain’t going down by itself.”
The man who built the organization, Edgar Bronfman, the street-smart, sometimes coarse, bullying businessman who took over the Seagram liquor dynasty started by his father, Sam, is commonly regarded as the king of Jewish philanthropy. In fact, there are some people who would simply call him king of the Jews. Since he rescued the World Jewish Congress from the edge of extinction more than two decades ago, Bronfman, 75, has been its president, chief benefactor, and guiding force. Israel Singer has been with him since the beginning—he was a staff member in the New York office when Bronfman entered the picture, and the two formed an immediate bond. For the past 25 years, Bronfman and Singer have been the odd couple of organized Jewish life. Bronfman, the verbally clumsy, secular billionaire, who has been married five times to four different women (he even named one of his seven children Edgar Jr., a huge no-no for Jews of European ancestry), and Singer, the polished, smooth-talking Orthodox rabbi from Brooklyn who can, as one acquaintance put it without even a hint of irony, “sell sand to the Arabs.”
It is, according to people who know them, an unusual, interdependent relationship. “Bronfman sees Singer as his ticket to redemption,” says one peer. “Having been a secular Jew most of his life, he decided rather late that Judaism mattered to him, and Singer has, if you will, koshered him.”
For his part, Singer gets extraordinary access, which he has skillfully maximized to become one of the most powerful people in the organized Jewish world. In addition to the influence he wields as putative head of the WJC, he is president of the Claims Conference, which oversees distribution of German reparations, and chairman of the World Jewish Restitution Organization, which handles Holocaust money from other countries like Poland and Switzerland. Thus Singer effectively controls billions of dollars of Holocaust-related funds ... Under Bronfman and Singer, the achievements of the World Jewish Congress could hardly be more impressive. It was the WJC that exposed U.N. secretary-general Kurt Waldheim’s hidden past as a Nazi. When Carmelite nuns wanted to build a convent at Auschwitz, the congress waged a bitter but ultimately successful fight with the Vatican to stop the project. The WJC fought valiantly on behalf of Soviet Jews. And it was Bronfman and his organization that got the Swiss banks to own up to their role during World War II and pay more than a billion dollars in restitution. Ironically, the root of the WJC’s troubles can be traced to its own Swiss bank account. Israel Singer deposited $1.2 million of WJC funds in a UBS account in Geneva. When the account was discovered—quite by accident—Singer was, particularly early on, less than forthcoming with an explanation. Still, the matter might have quietly gone away had it not been for a raucous political dispute that had erupted between Bronfman and a wealthy, irascible Australian Jew named Isi Leibler ... There is a certain Wizard of Oz quality to the WJC. When you pull back the curtain, there’s not a whole lot there other than the implied power that comes from representing the world’s Jewish communities. Its primary mission is fighting anti-Semitism, and it responds, when crises occur, on a situational basi ... About fifteen years ago, the WJC began raising money through direct mail. Today, its annual budget is approximately $10 million, of which Bronfman kicks in about $2 million. The rest comes from contributors, just about all of them American. A lot of the contributions come in the form of $18 checks accompanied by notes in the frail handwriting of the elderly that say things like “Please help save the Jews.”

"The University of Michigan on Wednesday announced a $20 million gift to establish a Judaic studies institute. The school said the gift is the largest dedicated to Judaic studies at any university and the largest ever to Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts. The institute -- to be called the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies -- will reside within Michigan's existing Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. The new institute will bring 14 of the world's leading scholars from a variety of disciplines to Ann Arbor for an academic year to collaborate in advancing scholarly research on the history, culture, literature, and religion of the Jews from antiquity to the present. It will be one of only a handful of such institutes in the world, the university said. The gift is from Samuel and Jean Frankel, both Michigan alums, whose 1988 collaboration with the Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation provided a $2 million gift to establish the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies. "A spike in anti-Semitic hate crimes and vandalism across Houston in recent months has alarmed police and set the Jewish community on edge, investigators and activists said today. Since September, 14 such crimes have been reported in the Houston and Harris County area. Eight occurred in a three-week period in December, said Martin Cominsky, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League. The last known incident occurred Dec. 30. Police say they have never seen this many anti-Semitic crimes reported in such a short period of time. What's more, they have no idea who's doing it -- or if these "personal" attacks, as investigators describe them, are even related. "We have no suspect information right now. We don't have any information," said Houston Police Department Investigator Catherine Richards. "No witnesses, no videotaping of any type. No one has come forward." Most of the crimes involve vandalism at public places, houses of worship and a Jewish community center. But there have also been threatening messages left on answering machines at synagogues in Houston and the Woodlands ... In some cases, the words "Juden Raus" -- meaning "Jews Out" -- were painted on sidewalks and benches in southwest Houston. The slogan was the title of an infamous board game in Germany during the 1930s that capitalized on the Nazi era, but sold poorly. Swastikas also were painted on eight of the large red domes decorating overpasses along the Southwest Freeway, and obscenities aimed at Jewish people were painted on a wall at a Montrose restaurant. Swastikas and slogans such as "Jews Die" were scratched into the doors of Congregation Brith Shalom in Bellaire and Congregation Emanu El. Sometimes the vandals went to considerable effort. Swastikas were etched into window panes at the Houston Hillel student center and the Houston Congregation for Reform Judaism, actually eating through part of the glass in the former case. Seven of the nine incidents that happened inside Houston's city limits have already been classified as hate crimes, police say. The other two incidents are still being reviewed."

"A scientific poll allegedly suppressed in Israel last month has found a plurality of Israelis favor transferring the Palestinian population out of Israel instead of implementing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to withdraw Jewish settlements from Gaza and parts of the West Bank this summer, WorldNetDaily has learned. The poll was commissioned by Mishalot Yisrael, a group formed to assess public opinion with regard to the withdrawal, and was conducted Jan. 12 with Mutagim, a major Israeli polling company. Israelis were asked whether they "prefer the 'Sharon/Peres Disengagement Plan' which includes transferring Gaza and Northern Shomron to Palestinian control, and expulsion of all Jews who live there – a move that would bring Palestinian territory closer to major Israeli cities such as Ashkelon and Tel Aviv. Or do you prefer the 'Jewish Alternative Disengagement Plan,' which includes annexing these territories and expulsion of the Arabs living there to an area outside Israel, deep beyond a safe security buffer zone – a move that would effectively distance the Palestinian population from major Israeli cities like Ashkelon and Tel Aviv?" The results showed 38 percent of the general Israeli population said they favor the mass transfer of Palestinians, while 37 percent favor Sharon's withdrawal plan, according to the poll. But Mutagim refused to release the survey results, claiming a question was entered late and the company was only able to interview 397 people instead of the 511 originally planned. The company offered to conduct another survey for free. Yekutiel Ben Yaacov, director of Mishalot Yisroel, told WND he demanded the poll results be released. In a conversation taped by Ben Yaacov because he says he suspected foul play, Mutagim market researcher Uri Pancier allegedly admits the results may be accurate and discusses his reluctance to release them. An independent polling company told WND the survey of 397 people, if conducted appropriately, would still be accurate and would only increase the margin of error by 0.5 to 1 percent. A second poll conducted by Mutagim, this time including 499 people, found 49 percent of the general Israeli population supports the Gaza withdrawal, while 27 percent favor the transfer of Palestinians. A third Mutagim survey, conducted earlier this month with 509 people, had 39 percent for Sharon's withdrawal, and 31 percent for Palestinian transfer. Both polls were released to Mishalot Yisroel. A second Israeli polling company, Geocartography, was also commissioned to conduct the same poll, and found 44 percent in favor of Sharon's plan, 31 percent for Palestinian transfer. But Ben Yaacov says he is upset the first poll, which found a plurality for the alternate plan, has not been released. "The polling companies are afraid. They don't want to put anything out that shows the Israeli people would rather kick out the Palestinians and not evacuate the Jews," said Ben Yaacov. Indeed, another Israeli polling company, Dahav Institute, refused to conduct the survey all together. Veteran Israeli pollster and Dahav head Dr. Mina Tzemach told WorldNetDaily, "Yes, I refused to do it. The so-called alternative plan is unrealistic, immoral and it will never happen. Such ideas are damaging to the state of Israel." Pancier made similar comments in the past. He told the Jerusalem Post in December his company is generally wary of surveys involving what he calls the right-wing community, as they tend to use results to express ideological opinions. "Israelis are not racist," Pancier told WND ... Andras Bereny, a key member of the Italian referendum party and a former candidate for the Italian Senate who helped pass over four referendum packages in Italy, has joined forces with Ben Yaacov and will assist in conducting an initial survey in select Israeli towns. Bereny calls the referendum important and says it will contribute to "determining the destiny of the Jewish people."

Vandals foul Palestinian village's water supply,

"The Madama village's spring was deliberately contaminated and its water supply system was sabotaged 10 days ago, village council head Ayed Kamal said Sunday. This is the sixth time in the past three years that the spring, the only source of water of the village's 1,700 residents, and the water system, has been deliberately damaged. The village is located near the extremist Yitzhar settlement and its outposts. An Oxfam delegation, accompanied by an Israel Defense Forces unit for protection, set out last Thursday to gauge the damage. The Oxfam group needed protection after armed Israelis opened fire on workers repairing the spring and water pipes on two previous occasions during 2002. Talia Somech, a spokeswoman for the IDF's civil administration, told Haaretz that the IDF learned of the damage only during the visit on Thursday and that the matter would be passed on to the police. Kamal told Haaretz that 10 days ago a group of Israelis, some of them armed, clashed with shepherds near the spring. That evening the water stopped flowing to the villagers' houses. On Thursday they found that the water pipes had been broken and the cement encasing one of the water wells had been smashed to pieces. The debris had been thrown into the well. A number of times from the end of 2000 to the end of 2003, the villagers had no water to their homes after unknown perpetrators smashed the water pipes and threw building waste into the water holes. Oxfam volunteered to finance the pipes' repair, but they were vandalized again. Oxfam then encased the pipes above the surface with concrete and built an iron cage around the water holes to protect them. However, once again the concrete and pipes were smashed and the drinking water fouled with dirty diapers and other waste. In November 2003, Italian volunteers helped the villagers seal the water hole openings with concrete. But in a few months the villagers started suffering from liver infections and stomach diseases. The contaminated water was banned for use until January this year, when after heavy rainfalls the pollution was reduced. The villagers started using it again, until 10 days ago. Kamal said the Palestinian Authority stopped passing complaints onto the IDF, because it fails to act on Palestinians' complaints against settlers. An Oxfam source said the group would prefer investing the funds in new projects, rather than in repairing repeated sabotage carried out by Israeli citizens."

"If Syria killed Rafik Hariri, Lebanon's former prime minister and mastermind of its revival after the civil war, it must be judged an act of political suicide. Syria is already under great international pressure from the US, France and Israel. To kill Hariri at this critical moment would be to destroy Syria's reputation once and for all and hand its enemies a weapon with which to deliver the blow that could finally destabilise the Damascus regime, and even possibly bring it down.So attributing responsibility for the murder to Syria is implausible. The murder is more likely to be the work of one of its many enemies ... If Syria did not kill Hariri, who could have? There is no shortage of potential candidates, including far-right Christians, anxious to rouse opinion against Syria and expel it from Lebanon; Islamist extremists who have not forgiven Syria its repression of the Muslim Brotherhood in the 80s; and, of course, Israel. Israel's ambition has long been to weaken Syria, sever its strategic alliance with Iran and destroy Hizbullah. Israel has great experience at "targeted assassinations" - not only in the Palestinian territories but across the Middle East. Over the years, it has sent hit teams to kill opponents in Beirut, Tunis, Malta, Amman and Damascus. Syria, Hizbullah and Iran have stood up against US and Israeli hegemony over the region. Syria continues to demand that Israel return the Golan Heights, seized in 1967. Damascus will not allow Lebanon to conclude a separate peace with Israel unless its own claim is also addressed. Hizbullah, in turn, is possibly the only Arab force to have inflicted a defeat on Israel. Its guerrillas forced Israel out of south Lebanon after a 22-year occupation. Hizbullah continues to be a big irritant to Israel because it has acquired a deterrent capability. Israel can no longer attack Lebanon with impunity - as it did for decades - without risking a riposte from Hizbullah rockets. Iran's nuclear programme threatens to break Israel's regional monopoly of weapons of mass destruction, which is the main reason it is under immense pressure to abandon uranium enrichment. The US and Israel have been trying to rally international support against Iran, Syria and Hizbullah. The US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, has condemned Iran as a prime sponsor of international terror. Syria has been condemned as a "destabilising" force in the region, and is in the dock because of Hariri's assassination. The US and Israel have also been urging European governments to declare Hizbullah a "terrorist organisation". France has its own quarrel with Syria, and President Jacques Chirac is outraged at the murder of his close friend Hariri, but Paris does not consider Hizbullah a terrorist organisation. For France, and for the vast majority of Arabs, Hizbullah is a national liberation movement as well as a big political actor in Lebanon. There is far more to this crisis than a struggle between rival clans in Lebanon."

"Irate high school students marched through Baquba, northeast of Baghdad, denouncing outgoing Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's decision to extend the weekend from the traditional Islamic holy day of Friday to include Saturday. "We don't want Saturday as it is a Jewish holiday," the crowd chanted Wednesday. Saturday is the weekly Jewish day of rest, the Sabbath, when all forms of work and business are barred for observant Jews. But it is also a day off, if not a holy day, in most places around the world -- including in many Arab countries where banks and government offices remain closed. "The decision to include Saturday as a rest day is the start of Zionist plans in Iraq," read a banner at the demonstration, organised by the Baquba Students' Union. Students carrying Iraqi flags also chanted: "Let Muslims here raise their hands: we don't want holiday on Saturday" ... "We organised this demonstration in protest at considering Saturday a holiday. We prefer it to be Thursday. Saturday is a holiday for Jews and we are Muslims and reject that decision," said high-school student Mohammed Abbas, 17."

Last week, the linebacker asked the team's owner to pray for him. Following up, Kraft said he tucked a piece of paper in the Western Wall, a common practice at Judaism's holiest site. Moments later, a man approached Kraft and asked him if the paper prayer was for Bruschi. "The nice thing is that people in Israel are following football in America,'' Kraft said. Kraft, whose team has won three of the last four Super Bowls, stood beside the Vince Lombardi trophy with the Old City behind him. "The owner of an online Judaica store is waging a campaign to reclaim one of the symbols of Jewish mysticism. Shlomo Perelman, the owner of Judaism.com, launched his campaign after such stars as Britney Spears, Madonna and Demi Moore began wearing the string, a symbol of Kabbalah. These celebrity icons talk about the string's power to ward off the evil eye or to fulfill personal wishes. When Perelman sees a Hollywood icon wearing a red string on his or her wrist, he gets nervous. As he explains on his Web site — featuring several pages of explanatory information and a five-minute video, with live footage from Rachel's Tomb in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, traditionally the place where the idea of the red string was born — the string is an important part of Jewish tradition. Far from being a new craze,
Perelman's site explains, the wearing of the red string dates back hundreds of years. Further, he writes, it cannot provide any of the magical promises these stars and other New Agers believe it offers ... Eitan Fishbane, an assistant
professor of Jewish religious thought at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles, agrees that the red string's powers have been exaggerated. Fishbane believes that "the red string has achieved its pop attraction because of celebrities advocating it. People are desperate for a quick fix to their problems" and misguidedly hope the mystical bracelet will offer them easy solutions. But Fishbane doesn't quite agree with Perelman on the red string's actual significance. He says the practice of wearing the red string is "associated with people in medieval times who believed in the healing power of magical objects. The tradition of the red string is associated more with folklore than with spirituality" ... For Perelman, the red string fad is just one example of a growing Jewish problem: "We are diluting our connection to Judaism by diverting it" to secular culture. He worries that Hollywood is "hijacking" this Jewish tradition. "Today's youth, who are most susceptible to outside influences, identify with Hollywood. Now, when they see a star wearing a red string, they will wear one too, not to be closer to Judaism, but as a vessel to reach Hollywood," he says ... Perelman admits that his sales of red strings and red-string silver bracelets have increased, but he says that was not his goal. His ultimate purpose in

"Tel Aviv fraud investigators began looking into the sources of the letters last month after Police Commissioner Moshe Karadi and Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz each received strongly worded letters threatening them with death “at the hands of heaven.” In many of her letters the woman spoke about the small town in Poland where she was born. This led police investigators to solicit help from the Yad VaShem Holocaust museum in locating the woman. When the police asked her if she was behind them she readily admitted that she spends 12 to 16 hours a day writing the letters – which she says are therapeutic for her. The woman has been writing such letters to public figures for the past 14 years, but her threats had been dismissed until the recent media interest against government ministers."

It's an order from U.S. Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith, that, when decrypted from diplomatic language, everyone must love America! “…When you're talking about relationships among democratic countries, it's crucial that the appreciation of those relationships extends beyond government officials down to the public in general, because otherwise the relationship is really not sustainable. ... We hope that the officials in our partner countries are going to be devoting the kind of effort to building popular support for the relationship…” Mr. Feith's “Americanism” brings to mind a “perfectly American” e-mail message a beloved American reader once sent to this columnist -- in response to an article that probably was not “pro-American enough.” “Burak Bekdil is a fool as well as being an inept analyst of anything -- his histrionics about the Bush administration discredit him from any further reading -- about anything.” Anyone may sin, but it is essential to repent. And so does this columnist… In view of Mr. Feith's doctrinal orders and as proof of repentance for all the sins against Fortress America, Equilibrium urges the government of Turkey to take immediate action. Here are a few policy recommendations: The Ministry of Education should devote large sections in school textbooks to the grossly heroic American history -- with special emphasis on the American war of freedom against the atrocities committed by the evil Indians. In addition, “Let's love America,” should be introduced as a must course in every Turkish school. For kindergarten education “Stories of Johnny” in Vietnam, Cuba, Chile, bin Laden's Afghanistan and Iraq must be featured in cartoon version. Turkey should begin celebrating July 4 as its alternative Independence Day. What's the problem if there are two celebrations in a year instead of just one? Turkey should also declare Sept. 11, along with Nov. 10 (Atatürk's death) a day for national mourning. Flags should be flown at half mast. The American national anthem should be taught in Turkish schools. State broadcaster TRT must air regular programs devoted to Mr. Feith's homeland. Here are a few title recommendations: “Getting to Know the Land of the Free and the Brave,” “A Nation: The World's Holy Saviors,” “Why the American Spirit Is Superior” “Born in the U.S.A.,” “The American Dream,” “From America, with Love,” “Johnny, My Love,” “America: The World's Most Ancient Civilization,” “America: The Cradle of Culture” or “Every American is a Genius.” The public tender law must be amended in such a way that every contract, including the multi-billion-dollar defense deals, must automatically go to American companies unless a rival bid is 99 percent cheaper. As a good starter, the attack helicopter contract must be awarded to Bell Helicopter Textron, Boeing or Sikorsky Aircraft in a sole-source deal. The USAF must be given carte blanche for the future use of Incirlik air base. This “carte blanche” must include a potential U.S. military offensive against Turkey. U.S. companies in Turkey must be declared tax exempt. Why tax them when they honor our country with their presence? Theaters should be banned from showing non-American films. A larger attendance for the always-masterpiece-like Hollywood films will mean more Turks trying to live like their superior American brothers."

But a kissing scene with co-actor Aki Avni in a car park next to the Wailing Wall infuriated religious Jews praying at the site, who slammed the smooch as an act of "lewdness" before chasing the pair and the crew off the set. The paper said director Amos Gitai had not asked for permission prior to shooting the scene, but reached a compromise after the incident that he and his crew could come back to the site."

"Because Palestinian violence has been so devastating, Israel’s retaliatory actions seem to be justified. Whether they are effective or not is almost secondary to the need to respond. Suicide bombings cannot be left unanswered. In all of Israel’s actions, few here have questioned the moral issues involved. After all, we are at war. Further, it is reasoned that the Palestinians do not consider the moral implications of their actions. But every political and/or military decision has its moral equivalent. That the Palestinian Authority is little bothered by ethical restrictions should not mean that Israel need use the lowest common denominator as a yardstick to measure its behavior, and thereby justify its actions. And those of us who remain silent when Israel goes beyond the biblical dictum of an “eye for an eye” and a “tooth for a tooth,” thus rendering Palestinians blind and toothless, are complicit partners in affixing to Israel the ultimate sign of immorality: “The mark of Cain.” The continued demolition of Palestinian homes in and around Jerusalem is a classic example of a government, which has lost its moral compass. We are not talking about homes of Palestinain terrorists or their relatives’ houses in Jenin, Rafiah or Nablus. (Although even here, there is a callousness that is unacceptable. A number of months ago, Kamala Abu Sa'id, the 65-year-old stepmother of a wanted man, was killed during the demolition of his home in Gaza. Israeli soldiers just did not search the house well enough to guarantee that no one was inside. As a former soldier this is painful to see as it damages the army's sacred doctrine of "purity of arms.") As a political policy, Israel has determined to limit any growth of Palestinian neighborhoods in and around Jerusalem, even if it means that an additional room has been built on to a Palestinian home in Anata ... It takes the army less than an hour to destroy a Palestinian home in the Jerusalem suburb of Issawiya because some family has added on a room illegally. (The destruction is usually total, including uprooting fruit trees surrounding the houses.) Yet, to dismantle an illegal settlement requires months of negotiations, and then when the crucial hour comes to do so, the army shows up without weapons so as not to hurt the Jewish population, even as rocks are hurled at our soldiers. Should an Arab protest the destruction of his home because a room was added on illegally, chances are that his family will be tear-gassed, shot with rubber bullets, beaten with billy-clubs, and may even be killed in some cases. It has been proffered by some that we have to be careful in our criticism of Israel’s behavior, lest we undermine the state. But what could undermine the state more than actions that are devoid of any moral considerations? And what happens to someone who stands up for the moral integrity of the Jewish state? Well, if you are Rabbi Arik Ascherman, the executive director of Rabbis for Human Rights in Israel, an organization of over 100 Israeli rabbis from all streams in Judaism, you are put on trial for daring to block a bulldozer from destroying one of these homes in East Jerusalem ... What is being done is being done in the name of the Jewish people. But, the blame ultimately rests with us, for our leaders and government sadly reflect the will of the people. And we have remained silent too long. The perception of Judaism and the image of the Jew is very muich determined by what is done in Israel. In the words of the great Jewish theologian, Abraham Joshua Heschel: “If we are not all guilty, we are all responsible.” The Talmud tells us: “Whosoever has the capacity to prevent his household from committing a crime, and does not, he is accountable for the sins of the entire household. . .” (Shabbat 54b). If we do not stand up and say, “enough,” then we are all guilty of a morally shameful chapter in the life of Israel."

French comic tries to justify criticism of Holocaust 'pornography',

"A flare-up of racial tension has been sparked off in France after a black stand-up comic, Dieudonné, was reported to have said that the 60th anniversary commemorations of the Holocaust were "remembrance pornography".Amid wide reporting of the comment by the half-French, half-Cameroonian performer, vandals attacked prominent Muslim and Jewish sites. Swastikas were daubed both on the walls of the Grande Mosquée in Paris and a Second World War railway carriage that stands as a Jewish memorial at a deportation assembly point in the suburb of Drancy. Police did not suggest that Dieudonné had sparked the attacks but it became clear that his comment was in line with the position of a new internet petition calling for the crimes of colonialism to be recognised and suggesting that Zionists had inspired the French state ban on Muslim headscarves. Dieudonné's comment was made at a press conference in the Algerian capital, Algiers, last week and picked up by a website covering Middle Eastern affairs as "offensive to the memory of the Holocaust". Dieudonné held a press conference in Paris at the weekend in which he attempted to explain his views. "I criticised the hype of Holocaust commemoration," he told the press conference. However, he stopped far short of his comments in Algeria last week: "The Zionists have a kind of impunity. For them, if a child at school is called a dirty Jew, they are up in arms. Despite his attempts to calm spirits, Dieudonné met with widespread condemnation. "Prepaid cards that unlock one of the raunchiest X-rated sites on the Internet are being peddled by bodegas and newsstands across the city - even to underage kids, the Daily News has learned. The so-called PPP cards cost $5 to $50, and work similar to prepaid telephone cards. Each one has a scratchoff number that buyers can use to cloak themselves in virtual anonymity when they log on to a Web site filled with hard-core pornography. Since it's illegal to sell smut to minors, the cards are printed with an 18-and-over warning - but an investigation by The News revealed that some merchants are willing to sell them to youngsters. "You're minors, right?" one shopkeeper asked our test subjects, two boys ages 15 and 16, before pocketing their $10 and handing over a card for 14 days of access to a supposedly adults-only site. It was hardly the equivalent of selling an adolescent a copy of Playboy. If the boys had used the card, they would have ended up on a Web site rife with the rawest closeup photos and videos of sex acts, including intercourse and fetishes ... PPP cards hit the city about four months ago, after entrepreneur Greg Moss, 33, of the Bronx, bought the exclusive U.S. rights from a Canadian company. They are already in about 20 city stores, usually displayed among an array of prepaid phone cards. Each features a scantily clad woman on the front. The Internet is flooded with adult-only sites, but most of them require users to pay for access with a major credit card. That sometimes leads to recurring charges, identity theft, unwanted popup ads for other sex sites - and uncomfortable questions from a significant other when the bill arrives. The PPP card sidesteps those problems because it's purchased with cash and the scratchoff number is the only identification a user needs. Moss plans to dramatically expand the rollout of the cards over the next few weeks, and then move into New Jersey, Miami and Atlanta in the coming months. "Porn has always gotten a bad rap, but people enjoy it," he said. "As a world, we need to face the fact that sex is part of people's lives - and this is making it more secure and less worrisome."

"So there is some irony in the geography that has placed Shiraz today at the center of a world controversy enveloping 13 locally prominent Orthodox Jews. It is in this provincial capital, known to the medieval poets as the City of Roses and Nightingales, that these Jews sit, moldering in a prison since early this year. Though jailed on suspicion of spying for Israel and the United States, they are widely seen as targeted due to their religious activism. As head of the oldest Jewish community in the diaspora, Parviz Yashaya knows the route past Cyrus’s old stone tomb well. It is a side road that runs off the route he himself has taken all too often lately, from the gritty national capital of Tehran up north, down to the sun-drenched capital of Fars Province. Since at least last November the fate of these Orthodox Jews has been this secular, cosmopolitan Jewish leader’s special preoccupation. Just last month, for example, in a move widely hailed for its bravery, Yashaya’s Central Jewish Committee of Tehran, the most prominent umbrella group for Iran’s 25,000 Jews, publicly embraced the cause of the 13 Jews as its own for the first time. Lauding them as “our religious teachers,” the committee declared flatly, “Spying requires devices which these individuals, whom we well know, did not have for carrying out such a task.” Demanding an open trial for the 13, the community leaders vowed to retain defense lawyers for their case. The committee’s statement, in a Rosh HaShanah greeting to Iran’s Jews, has set the country’s organized Jewry on a course sharply at odds with powerful hard-line fundamentalist leaders in Tehran’s Islamic government. It is no small irony, therefore, that many Iranian Jews and American Jewish leaders hold Yashaya, the communal leader behind this declaration, responsible for playing a role in their being jailed in the first place. Odder still: Even the most adamant of these say that Yashaya, of all people, is the only person who can now help them. “He is one of our main hopes,” acknowledged one American Jewish activist speaking on condition of anonymity. This activist, like others, spoke with awe of Yashaya’s legendary connections to Iran’s leadership, forged during his days as a radical leftist during the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Yet like many others, the American activist also said in the very next breath, “Yashaya is probably the reason they are in jail. … He’s the person who put them in, and if anything happens to them, I’ll hold him responsible" ... Parviz Yashaya, who once sat in prison himself for his revolutionary activities — and was reportedly rescued from the executioner’s sword by Iran’s Jewish community — is today the point person in Iran for Jewish efforts to relieve the 13 Jews’ plight. All agree the government of Iran bears ultimate responsibility for the situation today. But this 66-year-old leader’s unique personal story has left many wondering if his role is mainly that of defender of the Jews or defender of the government — or both. “This guy is in a situation in which he has to be one of the most artistic acrobats in the world,” said Darioush Fakhari, editor of Eyewitness, a monthly magazine for Iranian Jews in Los Angeles. “He’s dealing with some of the worst enemies of Israel. And he must play their game without being sold.” Teetering between a xenophobic, fiercely anti-Zionist Islamic government whose top officials he often knows intimately and a Jewish community whose welfare even many of his critics acknowledge he has nurtured steadily, Yashaya is undoubtedly the most unusual Jewish leader in the world today. And in recent months, not the least unusual thing about him has been his determined effort to free a group with whom he was in bitter conflict until their jailing ... Earlier, it was Yashaya’s constant efforts on the prisoners’ behalf — aided, no doubt by world attention — that secured regular family visits for the 13 Jews after they were denied such contact for the first six months of their imprisonment. Yashaya is widely credited, too, with ensuring their ability to receive kosher meals, also long denied. But informed observers cited Yashaya’s Rosh HaShanah statement publicly embracing the 13 as the highwater mark of someone who had come full circle. In the years, and especially in the last few months leading up to their imprisonment, it was Yashaya, these sources say, who was their main antagonist. According to these sources, the 13 Jews now sitting in jail were mostly leaders and activists of the most pious group of Jews in Iran. It was a group, the sources say, that for various reasons had set itself rigorously apart from the rest of the community — and in particular from the community’s elected leadership under Yashaya. Interviews conducted with more than 35 people in New York, Los Angeles, London and Israel indicate that this group’s increasing influence on Iranian Jewry, and its contacts with outside religious groups in the West, were seen by Yashaya as a threat to his own position. (Repeated attempts to reach Yashaya were unsuccessful.) It was one serious enough, for example, that even before the arrests he banned one of the group’s members from the pulpit of a Tehran synagogue, where his weekly sermons were drawing large crowds ... Even many of Yashaya’s strongest critics within the tightly knit Iranian Jewish community abroad acknowledge he has won these votes by working hard within the constraints of Iran’s Islamic system for the overall welfare of Jews in Iran ... [A]ccording to a former member of the board of the Jewish Community Council at that time, Yashaya himself was threatened with execution for his political activities. He was saved from this fate only because of the intervention of the Jewish community council board. Those were the bright red shining days for the young Yashaya. According to numerous sources within the community who know him personally, Yashaya then was a member of Tudeh, the pro-Soviet Communist Party of Iran. “He was kind of the ‘bad child’ of the community,” said Professor Amnon Netzer, an expert on Iranian Jewry at Hebrew University in Israel and one of many who confirm the Tudeh tie ... In fact, related Frank Nikbakht, the Iranian Jewish activist in Los Angeles and an amateur scholar of the community’s oral history, “Hundreds of young Iranian Jews were very prominent members of the Tudeh Party. In Iran, during the war, there was no one else who would defend the Jews. All the other parties had pro-German sympathies.”
The phenomenon echoes — in some respects — one known well by the Ashkenazi Jews of Russia and Eastern Europe. There, too, the siren song of communism wafted sweetly through thousands of towns and shtetls under the heels of kings and dictators ... But the Jewish radicals of Iran, by and large, never disowned their community, nor it them. They remained part and parcel of it, simply a crimson strand within the warp and weft of Persian Jewry’s intricate, ancient weave. Thus, stressed one Westerner who knew Yashaya back in the ’70s, for all his anti-Shah radicalism, “He was never an alienated Jew.” Yashaya was, in fact, a central member of what turned out to be a crucial organization within the Jewish community. The Anjuman Johmeh Roshan Fekhran Yahoudi, or Society of Young Jewish Intellectuals, brought together a small circle of young radical thinkers and activists like Yashaya ... But when the revolution occurred, it was Yashaya’s coterie of intellectuals that leapt into a leadership vacuum with credible anti-shah credentials capable of protecting their community. The moment was critical, as the community’s old leadership had abruptly fled, and no one was exactly in charge. “They ran away,” said Fakhari, the Los Angeles-based community magazine editor, bluntly. “For 30 years they shook the shah’s hand and stood at his side. Then, when trouble came, they jumped on a plane and left the community in the hands of God.” Amid the confusion, apparently it was Yashaya who saw clearly that whatever the community’s sentiments, it was crucial they be lined up early on with the winning side. As the anti-shah protests and strikes increased daily, Yashaya organized a huge — for the Jewish community — protest of some 7,000 against the shah. Then, leveraging this move as collateral, Yashaya and his cohorts gained a meeting with Khomeini himself shortly after he returned to the country from exile. It was a time still fraught with a rising potential of popular violence against the community, which was subject to being perceived as close to both the departed shah and to the now-hated Israel. But Yashaya secured from Khomeini a fatwa, or religious legal ruling, specifically forbidding any harm to the Jewish community. “It was a daring wild card,” recalled Fakhari, “to take the Jews into the street against the shah. They [Yashaya’s group] organized it. And as a result, the Muslims in the street chanted, ‘Mazal Tov! Join us. Welcome, Mubrak! It is our joint alliance!’ ” Professor Shaul Bakhash, an Iran expert at George Mason University, termed Yashaya’s actions during this period “very valuable.” The delegation of young Jews he led to meet with Khomeini “expressed their genuine [pro-revolution] sentiments,” Bakhash explained. “But they also made peace between the revolution and the Jews.”
The years that followed were horrific for all Iranians. A ruinous eight-year war with Iraq left tens of thousands dead and even more maimed and wounded, while devastating the country economically. Many Jews left the country during this period, often illegally. But in recent years, Yashaya and his diaspora partner, Sabi, are credited with negotiating liberalized emigration regulations for Jews that have curtailed the arrests — and in some cases, disappearances — of Jews attempting to flee over Iran’s mountainous borders ... Recalling the way of Queen Esther and Mordechai, [Sabi] added, “We didn’t live 2,700 years by confronting the government whenever we had a problem. Yet each time we managed to get around the king’s edict.”

Kidney trade probe moves to Israel,

"Investigators and prosecutors probing an international kidney trade syndicate have been given a six-month postponement to carry out investigations in Israel. South African authorities said their trip to Israel could broaden their investigations and more suspects could be arrested. The kidney trade syndicate allegedly recruited poor Brazilians and Israelis and paid them up to $10 000 (about R60 000) to fly to South Africa and donate a kidney. The recipients were Israelis who paid up to $120 000 (about R724 000) for the organs. On Tuesday, St Augustine's Hospital kidney specialist Jeff Kallmeyer, Netcare transplant staffers Lindy Dickson and Melani Azor and English/Hebrew interpreter Samuel Ziegler appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court. They have been charged with up to 76 contraventions of the Human Tissues Act, which outlaws the sale of human organs. State advocate Hansraj Cheetenal said the proposed trip to Israel could broaden the investigation in that there could be other suspects. Advocate Jimmy Howse, representing Kallmeyer, opposed the application and asked the State to withdraw charges pending the outcome of the investigation. "Charges like this always have a devastating effect on professional people. Not only is it an embarrassment for him but it has hugely affected his practice," said Howse. He said the broader investigation in Israel was likely to "open a new can of worms" that would delay investigations further."

"An Israeli spy was kicked out of Australia for trying to seduce female spies, diplomats and defence specialists employed by some of the most sensitive national security agencies, security sources said yesterday. Amir Laty, expelled on December 28, even targeted journalists in the hope of cultivating young women with access to government secrets. "It was an attempt at high-level espionage," a national security source said. Apart from Laty's friendship with Attorney-General Philip Ruddock's 26-year-old daughter Caitlin, he is also believed to have had liaisons with a woman from the Defence Intelligence Organisation and another from the Prime Minister and Cabinet Office's international policy unit. Intelligence experts claimed he used the "honeypot" method, pretending a love interest to entrap woman in middle-level intelligence organisations. Under ASIO rules regarding Commonwealth employees, any contact with a foreign official must be reported to it. While romancing by a young, single male diplomat is not considered serious enough to warrant expulsion, selecting well-placed female government officials for "careful cultivation" to obtain high-level information is a different matter. It also emerged that ASIO was alerted to Laty's activities after what they claim was a "suspicious meeting" with a former Israeli Army intelligence officer serving time in a NSW jail for drug importation. The Daily Telegraph has discovered that the former consul last year visited the man who had served 19 years in a special unit of the Israeli Army. It was one "highly suspicious" visit which raised alarm bells and prompted contact with ASIO."

It includes the regular Shabbat, or Sabbath, service in the sanctuary, a dinner and a discussion and guest speaker on topics like spirituality in the Sabbath observance, meaningful Jewish prayer, atheism and what happens after death ... Offering money to attend religious education or services is part of a growing trend in which Orthodox Jewish religious leaders and educators liken the payments to scholarships. They are striving to deepen knowledge, answer questions, explore issues, and counter the loss of religious and cultural identity that causes young Jews to assimilate into the general culture ... Levin's program is based partly on the Maimonides Leaders Fellowship program that Jewish Awareness America started at the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus in the fall of 2002. That program emphasizes exploring Jewish heritage and makes participation in religious services optional. It offers a $400 cash stipend to those who complete a 10-week program that includes a two-hour evening seminar midweek, plus some field trips to do such things as meet Jewish professionals at their job sites, and to experience Friday and Saturday Sabbath observances ... That pretty much sums up Thering's 48-year dream of bringing about a détente between religions - especially Judaism and her own Catholic faith, which until 1965 had been turning a blind eye toward textbooks and teachers who blamed Jews for the crucifixion of Jesus ... When Kalafer, LeDonne and director Oren Jacoby began production of their 39-minute film in 2003, they thought of it as a valedictory on a job well-done - a salute to the Dominican nun who helped bring about the 1965 Vatican II clause that forever changed Catholic teaching about Jews. "This one little woman stood up and made a difference," Kalafer says. Little did the filmmakers suspect that Thering had a new battle looming. Smack in the middle of filming Thering's story, in February 2004, Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" thunderously reopened the chasm between Jews and Catholics. "It was very violent, there were some scenes that I could not even watch," says Thering, who saw the film the week after it opened. But what she did see, through clenched fingers, seemed to absolve Pontius Pilate and the Romans for their part in the death of Jesus, and fix the blame squarely on the Jews. I think he was a little irked with my asking that. Because I knew." What the whisper meant was: Jew ... Thering's doctoral dissertation became Exhibit A for Antonin Cardinal Bea, who used it during the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council ("Vatican II") to push for language that would reverse centuries of church teaching about Jews. "The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) was bombarded with accusations of being “pro-Palestine” and “anti-Israel” as it tried to explain why it is considering divesting from companies profiting from the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The problem with all of this is we are not talking with each other, we are talking at each other,” said Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor, director of interfaith affairs for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), as he spoke to the PC(USA)’s interfaith relations coordinator, Rev. Jay Rock. “And we’re not saying the things that facilitate dialogue.”
According to the Presbyterian News Service (PNS), the ADL invited Rev. Rock to speak at its annual National Executive Committee meeting in West Palm Beach, FL., so as to explain the “church’s side of the divestment story and to discuss interfaith relations”. “My aim this morning is to try to move us beyond the fog of misrepresentation that has characterized so many descriptions of what Presbyterians are doing,” Rock told the 150 attendees. “And to provide you with a basic description of our actions and some information about the perspectives that lie behind them.” The divestment controversy began last summer, during the PC(USA)’s general assembly. At the assembly, the majority of delegates voted to begin the “selective divestment” of companies profiting from the Israeli occupation and construction of the separation/protection barrier between the two nations. The resolution was highly criticized by Jewish groups, including the ADL, which charged the PC(USA) of being biased against Israel. During Saturday’s discussion, Rock strived to explain that the denomination supports a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict. “I want to assure you that the Presbyterian Church did not take the actions of last summer out of a hatred or dislike of Jews,” said Rock, whose father was Jewish and mother a Presbyterian. “In fact, many Presbyterians understand why most Jews are upset by the actions that we have taken.” However, his comment fell on deaf ears. “When we hear ‘phased, selective divestiture,’ the Jewish community hears economic boycott,” Bretton-Granatoor said, according to PNS. “They should have been able to understand how the Jewish community was going to react.” Abraham Foxman, ADL national director, said divestment talk are also offensive because of the ties the PC(USA) makes between Israel and apartheid-era South Africa. “What galls us is the moral hypocrisy,” Foxman said, who further charged the denomination of taking sides with Palestine. “I didn’t know that the Palestinian narrative was the Presbyterian Church’s narrative. "As is often the case with AP's coverage of news having to do with Israel, there's a serious omission in its reporting on the Russia-Israel connection even when it involves oil and the United States. The day after the State of the Union Address, two Interpol fugitives attended the "National Prayer Breakfast" held in Washington DC. The day before that, these fugitives from the law were the guests of honor at an hour-long meeting of the International Relations Committee on Capitol Hill, invited by ranking Democrat Tom Lantos (Calif.) You would think it would be hot news when wanted men being hunted by European police suddenly pop up in the US particularly on Capitol Hill and at events attended by the US president. Yet, there was not a single AP story in the US on any of this. Not a single national network television or radio news program even mentioned these facts. In fact, Google and LexisNexis searches four days after these events took place turned up only three newspaper articles on them anywhere in the entire country. Who are these fugitives from the law, wanted by Interpol, who are meeting at the highest levels of the US government? And why didn't we learn of them? Therein lies the story. These two men, it turns out, are just the tips of a colossal iceberg. And this iceberg doesn't just have 90 percent of its mass hidden under water; this iceberg is almost entirely submerged. They are Mikhail Brudno and Vladimir Dubov, Israeli-Russian partners in the giant Russian oil company Yukos. They, along with a number of their cronies, are wanted by Interpol for allegedly bilking Russian citizens out of billions of dollars. To elude Russian prosecution, these men have taken up residence in Israel. As the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz explains: "In recent years Russian authorities began investigating [Yukos], its managers and major stockholders, many of whom are of Jewish origin. The probes caused several of the managers to flee to Israel, and resulted in Khodorkovski's [Yukos CEO] arrest and a Kremlin attack on Yukos." The fact is that Israel is an important factor in the ongoing, nation-shaking power struggle now going on in Russia. Yet AP virtually never reports this connection. For example, a few months ago in a typical AP story on this power struggle, "Report: Russia again charges Berezovsky," Moscow AP Bureau Chief Judith Ingram makes no mention anywhere that Berezovsky is an Israeli citizen, or of his many connections to Israel. Such omissions by AP and large swaths of the American media leave Americans seriously disadvantaged in deciphering what is going on in Russia, and its profound significance for the world. In order to make sense of this Russian power struggle, and to understand its importance to the rest of us, it is necessary to understand the usually omitted Israeli subtext. When this is understood, the friendship of such pro-Israel Congressional leaders as Rep. Lantos to fugitive Russian oil tycoons begins to make sense. To explore this background it is often useful to turn to the Israeli press. In July a major Israeli publication, the Jerusalem Post, carried an article headlined: "Boris Berezovsky: Putin's Russia dangerous for Israel." Before describing what this contained, let us first go into a little of the background ... Boris Berezovsky is one of seven "oligarchs," as they are known both inside and outside Russia: massively rich, powerful manipulators who through violence, theft and corruption acquired a mammoth percentage (reports range from 70 to 85 percent) of Russia's resources, from its oil to the auto industry to mass media outlets. At the same time, the group steadily gained control over much of the country's political apparatus. Using extraordinary financial resources and insider dealing, the oligarchs handpicked prime ministers and governmental leaders and barely even bothered to do this behind the scenes. In 1997 Yukos founder Mikhail Khodorkovsky, one of the group and Russia's sometimes richest man (several of the oligarchs trade the top spot back and forth) told an interviewer before he was arrested and imprisoned by Putin last year ... Almost all of these oligarchs, it turns out, have significant ties to Israel. In fact, Berezovsky himself has Israeli citizenship a fact that caused a scandal of Watergate proportions in Russia in 1996 when it was exposed by a Russian newspaper. Do Berezovsky's dual loyalties really matter? Yes. In the realm of global dominance, Israel's interests and Russia's are considerably divergent. It is in Israel's interests to bring to power a regime in Russia friendly to Israel, rather than the current one under Putin, which Israeli leaders feel is supportive of its enemies. Not long ago, for example, Putin met with Syrian leaders an action highly disturbing to Israel. Having an Israeli citizen at the highest levels of the Russian government is ideal, from Israel's point of view. In Berezovsky they had such a man. The Jerusalem Post article mentioned above is revealing. It describes Berezovsky as "the Godfather of the Oligarchs' and Kingmaker of Russia's Politics'" and reports Berezovsky's statement that "Putin's Russia is dangerous for Israel." Berezovsky goes on to assert that Putin "supports terror" in the Middle East through Russia's previous relations with Iraq and current relations with Iran. While Israelis may have been delighted at Berezovsky's position in Russia, It is not surprising that Russian citizens were somewhat less so. Finding that a powerful leader and member of the Russian Security Council was an Israeli citizen was disconcerting, at best. As a result of the media uproar over Berezovsky's Israeli citizenship and other events, the Oligarchs' connections to Israel are widely known in Russia and elsewhere. In Israel they are covered frequently, often with adulation, including a recent hit Israeli TV series called "The Oligarchs." "Some of its episodes," according to Israeli writer Uri Avnery, "are simply unbelievable or would have been, if they had not come straight from the horses' mouths: the heroes of the story, who gleefully boast about their despicable exploits. The series was produced by Israeli immigrants from Russia." Avnery writes that the oligarchs used "cheating, bribery and murder," as they "exploited the disintegration of the Soviet system to loot the treasures of the state and to amass plunder amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars. In order to safeguard the perpetuation of their business, they took control of the state. Six out of the seven are Jews." According to a Washington Post story by David Hoffman, the group bought and controlled Russian governmental officials at the highest levels. After financing Yeltsin's election in 1996, Hoffman writes: "The tycoons met and decided to insert one of their own into government. They debated who and chose [Vladimir] Potanin, who became deputy prime minister. One reason they chose Potanin was that he is not Jewish, and most of the rest of them are, and feared a backlash against the Jewish bankers." In Russia, the oligarchs are deeply loathed, considered villains who worked to bleed the country dry; during their reign many Russian citizens saw their life savings disappear overnight. A new term was coined for their dominance, "semibankirshchina" (the rule of the seven bankers), and they were widely known to have wielded small, murderous armies. There are rumors that Berezovsky, subject of the respectful AP article, was even responsible for the gunning down of an American journalist, Forbes Moscow editor Paul Klebnikov. While no one has been charged with the murder of Klebnikov, who had written a book on Berezovsky, many suspect a Berezovsky connection. As a friend of Klebnikov wrote: "Experienced expatriates in Russia shared an essential rule: Don't cross these brutal billionaires, ever, or you're likely to go home in a box." [JTR editor's note: Klebnikov wrote an anonymous (for fear of assassination) feature article at Forbes about Berezovsky a few years ago and an entire book entitled The Godfather of the Kremlin and the Looting of Russia."] The Chechnya Connection There is evidence that Berezovsky's responsibility for death and tragedy may be vastly greater. "Berezovsky boasts that he caused the war in Chechnya," Avnery reports, "in which tens of thousands have been killed and a whole country devastated. He was interested in the mineral resources and a prospective pipeline there. In order to achieve this he put an end to the peace agreement that gave the country some kind of independence. The oligarchs dismissed and destroyed Alexander Lebed, the popular general who engineered the agreement, and the war has been going on since then. "In the end," Avnery writes, "there was a reaction: Vladimir Putin, the taciturn and tough ex-KGB operative, assumed power, took control of the media, put one of the oligarchs (Mikhail Khodorkovsky) in prison, caused the others to flee (Berezovsky is in England, Vladimir Gusinsky is in Israel, another, Mikhail Chernoy, is assumed to be hiding here.)" Yet, apart from the Washington Post, American media report on almost none of this. Instead, US coverage largely portrays Berezovsky and his crowd as American-style entrepreneurs who are being hounded by a Russian government whose actions are, to repeat the media's commonly used phrase, "politically motivated." US news stories, even when they occasionally do hint at questionable practices, tend to use such phrases as "brash young capitalists" to describe the oligarchs. For example, a long series co-produced by FRONTLINE and the New York Times referred to these men as "shrewd businessmen," and asked "what it's like to be young, Russian and newly affluent?" Massive violence, dual loyalties, and control of resources are rarely, if ever, part of the picture. When AP Moscow bureau chief Ingram was asked for this article about Berezovsky's Israeli citizenship, she claimed to know nothing about it, a curious contention for someone who has been an AP news editor in Moscow since 1999. When Ingram was queried further, she hung up the phone. An examination of Ingram's reporting on the Berezovsky story cited above raises serious questions. Though she is located in Moscow, Ingram interviewed only two people for her news story: Berezovsky, who is in London, and Berezovsky associate Alex Goldfarb, in New York. One wonders why she interviewed none of the Russians residing around her. Similarly, one wonders why not a single AP story has identified Berezovsky's considerable connection to Israel. Further, nowhere does Ingram's article convey the ruthlessness of the oligarchs' actions, or the significance of their holdings, including control of its media. Unnoted in Ingram's report is the fact that her subject and fellow oligarch Vladimir Gusinsky have been two of Russia's most powerful media tycoons. Before Putin's crackdown, according to the Washington Post, oligarchs had succeeded in seizing "the reins of Russia's print and broadcast media, vital to the evolution of the country's fledgling democracy and growth of its nascent civil society." Berezovsky crony Gusinsky, who is close friends with Rupert Murdoch and was about the launch a satellite network, fled to Israel when it appeared he would be arrested." Somehow, AP's bureau chief seems to have missed all this Does this matter to Americans? AP is the major news source for the thousands of news outlets around the country who cannot afford to have their own foreign correspondents. When AP chooses not to cover something, its omission is felt throughout the nation. When national news networks and others leave out the same facts, the cover-up is almost total. Russia, despite its current turmoil, contains enormous power. Its natural resources are gargantuan: it possesses the world's largest natural gas reserves, the second largest coal reserves, and the eighth largest oil reserves. It is the world's largest exporter of natural gas, the second largest oil exporter, and the third largest energy consumer. Russia's significance on the world stage now, as in the past, is immense. Similarly, the United States is currently the most powerful nation on earth. It is therefore essential that its citizens be accurately informed on issues of significance. Israeli citizens, Russian citizens, and citizens of nations throughout the world know the information detailed above. It is critical that American citizens be no less well informed. For years, the neocons' push for war against Iraq was largely uncovered by the US media. For even longer, the neocons' close connections to Israel have gone largely unmentioned in mainstream American news reports. As a result, very few Americans know to what degree many of those responsible for the tragic US invasion and occupation of Iraq have been motivated by Israeli concerns."

"This is a TV series about Russia. But it could have been about Israel. Or about the United States. It is entitled "The Oligarchs" and is now being screened on Israeli television. Some of its episodes are simply unbelievable--or would have been, if they had not come straight from the horses' mouths: the heroes of the story, who gleefully boast about their despicable exploits. The series was produced by Israeli immigrants from Russia. The "oligarchs" are a tiny group of entrepreneurs who exploited the disintegration of the Soviet system to loot the treasures of the state and to amass plunder amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars. In order to safeguard the perpetuation of their business, they took control of the state. Six out of the seven are Jews. In popular parlance they are called "oligarchs"--from the Greek word meaning "rule of the few". In the first years of post-Soviet Russian capitalism they were the bold and nimble ones who knew how to exploit the economic anarchy in order to acquire enormous possessions for a hundredth or a thousandth of their value: oil, natural gas, nickel and other minerals. They used every possible trick, including cheating, bribery and murder. Every one of them had a small private army. In the course of the series they are proud to tell in great detail how they did it. But the most intriguing part of the series recounts the way they took control of the political apparatus. After a period of fighting each other, they decided that it would be more profitable for them to cooperate in order to take over the state. At the time, President Boris Yeltsin was in a steep decline. On the eve of the new elections for the presidency, his rating in public opinion polls stood at 4%. He was an alcoholic with a severe heart disease, working about two hours a day. The state was, in practice, ruled by his bodyguard and his daughter; corruption was the order of the day. The oligarchs decided to take power through him. They had almost unlimited funds, control of all TV channels and most of the other media. They put all these at the disposal of Yeltsin's reelection campaign, denying his opponents even one minute of TV time and pouring huge sums of money into the effort. (The series omits an interesting detail: they secretly brought over the most outstanding American election experts and copywriters, who applied methods previously unknown in Russia.) The campaign bore fruit: Yeltsin was indeed reelected. On the very same day he had another heart attack and spent the rest of his term in hospital. In practice, the oligarchs ruled Russia. One of them, Boris Berezovsky, appointed himself Prime Minister. There was a minor scandal when it became known that he (like most of the oligarchs) had acquired Israeli citizenship, but he gave up his Israeli passport and everything was in order again. Indeed, the anti-Semites argue that these doings confirm the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", a document fabricated by the Russian secret police a century ago, purporting to reveal a Jewish conspiracy to control the worl ... [In Israsel] Shimon Peres' connections with multi-millionaires are well-known, as are the huge sums poured out by American Jewish multi-millionaires for extreme right-wing causes in Israel. One of the Russian oligarchs is the part-owner of the second biggest Israeli newspaper ... As a Russian commentator in the TV series said about the new Russian democracy: "They have turned a virgin into a whore."
Sharon's son charged in corruption case,

"Israel's attorney general lifted the threat of indictment against Ariel Sharon yesterday in a scandal over illegal campaign funds but charged the prime minister's son, Omri, with fraud and other crimes in the same case. The decision closes the second of three corruption investigations which have dogged Mr Sharon and threatened to derail his "disengagement plan" to pull Israeli settlers out of the Gaza Strip. But there is a widespread view within Israel's legal system and among the public that Mr Sharon escaped for political reasons and that his 40-year-old son and political adviser has accepted responsibility on his behalf. Omri Sharon faces up to seven years in jail if convicted of charges over the alleged laundering of illegal campaign contributions through front companies used to fund his father's bid for the leadership of the Likud party six years ago. Mr Sharon won the race, which laid the ground for his election as prime minister. A criminal investigation was launched after the state comptroller's office uncovered the laundering of illegal campaign funds and suggested there may have been criminal behaviour by the prime minister, his sons, Omri and Gilad, and leading political aides."

"HSBC has been drawn into an inquiry by Eliot Spitzer, New York state's attorney-general, into allegations of financial mismanagement at the World Jewish Congress, the US-based lobbying group. The high-profile prosecutor is expected to seek details about an account at one of HSBC's London branches that was allegedly used to channel questionable payments. Spitzer is investigating claims that Rabbi Israel Singer, the WJC's chairman, diverted $1.2 million from the organisation's operating funds into a Swiss bank account in a series of transactions that were not revealed to colleagues. From there, the money travelled to the HSBC London account. Singer strongly denies impropriety and insists that the transfers were legitimate and made with the intention of creating an employee pension plan. He has been cleared by an internal WJC investigation, although the world's foremost international Jewish advocacy group has been in tumult since the allegations emerged. A number of senior staff have recently left, including Isi Leibler, who first raised concerns about the payments and continues to demand a full independent audit of the WJC's finances. Leibler was the WJC's senior vice-president, but was recently voted off the board after months of vocal criticism. Leibler's calls for an audit have been backed by Jewish organisations in several countries. But yesterday the WJC's Stephen Herbits called his claims 'false allegations made for political purposes'."

Zeev Rosenstein, the most-wanted man by the Israel Police, is offering the house he is building in Hod Hasharon for sale. Rosenstein, now undergoing extradition proceedings to the US on suspicion of masterminding huge international drug deals, is selling his house through Sharon area real estate agents. Located in a desirable neighborhood in Hod Hasharon, the 600 sq.m. three-storey house is on a one-dunam (0.25-acre lot). The first floor has a huge living room and kitchen; the second floor mainly comprises bedrooms; and the basement has a luxury gym. A swimming pool is in the yard ... The official reason for the sale is that Rosenstein will not be able to reside in the house in the near future, so there is no point in owning it. But there is more to it than that. The fact that Rosenstein is also selling his luxury armored Mercedes Benz speaks for itself."

"Rodney Adler has spoken for the first time about the impact the investigation into the HIH collapse has had on his family. Adler, who will be sentenced next month after pleading guilty to four criminal charges in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, said his wife and children had been under tremendous strain as a consequence of the regulator's four-year investigation into the insurer's multibillion-dollar collapse. "The events of the past four years have taken a tremendous toll on my family and I believe that the reality of this will only sink in after my sentencing hearing," Adler told The Sun-Herald .. Although Adler would not be drawn on his reasons for pleading guilty after such a long and bitter battle to clear his name, it is widely believed his decision to strike a deal was motivated by a desire to spare his family any further heartache. Adler pleaded guilty to two charges relating to the dissemination of false information to the sharemarket and two charges of failing to disclose "adverse information" about a sideline business. He faces up to 20 years jail when his sentencing hearing begins on March 29. The guilty plea followed an agreement being reached with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions which saw three other charges relating to market manipulation dropped. The deal is expected to see his jail term reduced to a lesser term, if he is jailed by the court. This will enable him to return to his "shattered" family sooner ... Family sources said on Friday that Adler did not want his children to see him "embarrassed and demeaned" in court ... Since her husband's humiliating and public fall from grace in 2001, Mrs Adler has withdrawn from the public eye. In 2002 she resigned her position as founding chairman of the Sydney Children's Hospital's fund-raising Gold Dinner, the biggest fund-raising event on the Sydney social calendar, and has not been to a society event since ... The Morony centre, which houses 550 inmates, is considered his most likely destination because it is a low-risk facility where Macquarie Bank high flyer Simon Hannes [JEWISH?]served his sentence for insider trading ... A senior officer said Adler could ask for special protection but that would involve sending him to Junee, the only privately owned jail in the NSW system."

Europe's Jews Seek Solace on the Right,

"A curious thing is happening in Belgium these days: a small but vocal number of Jews are supporting a far-right party whose founders were Nazi collaborators. The xenophobic party, Vlaams Belang, plays on fears of Arab immigrants and, unlike the prewar parties from which it is descended, courts Jewish votes. Perhaps 5 percent of the city of Antwerp's Jews gave it their votes in the last election. The Belgian example is extreme, but it represents the sharpest edge of a much broader political shift by European Jews - away from the left, particularly the far left, and toward the center and right, in the face of rising displays of anti-Semitism and the European left's embrace of the Palestinian cause. This drift from the left has "been going on steadily for the last 20 or 30 years," said Tony Lerman, who runs London's Hanadiv Charitable Foundation, which supports Jewish life in Europe. Of course, the shift is not monolithic and some of it is also associated with a rise in Jews' social and economic status. In the vast majority of cases it represents a move toward tolerant parties of the center or center-right rather than a leap to the far end of the spectrum - where many xenophobic parties remain unfriendly to Jews as well as to Arabs. So the number of Jews on the far right remains a very slim minority. But the fact that there are any at all is a measure of the degree to which many of Europe's 2.4 million Jews feel abandoned by the left and are still searching for a comfortable place in European politics. Meanwhile, they are becoming increasingly active in the mainstream right. In Britain in the last 60 years, the number of left-of-center Jewish members of Parliament has dropped from more than two dozen to about a dozen, primarily older, members while the number in parties of the center and right has climbed from none to about half a dozen. The Tories' would-be finance minister, Oliver Letwin, is Jewish, as is the party's new leader, Michael Howard. Mr. Lerman says Jews in Britain are now identified in public opinion more with the Conservative Party than the Labor Party. Much of European Jewry considered the left its natural home in the 19th century and the early 20th century. The left supported Jewish emancipation and more liberal immigration policies in Western Europe, and Social Democrats and Communists opposed Russia's czars, who sponsored anti-Semitic pogroms, and Hitler. But after World War II, Stalin, too, attacked Jews, and in the 1950's the Soviet Union identified itself with Arab nationalism. From the 1960's onward, the left in Europe increasingly portrayed Israel not as a land of collective farmers making the desert bloom but as an occupying power. So the disenchantment accelerated, especially in the last few years. "Arafat became the leftist pinup boy following Che Guevara," said Barry Kosmin, head of the Institute for Jewish Policy Research in London. Jews say the distinction between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism has often become difficult to see. Swastikas and anti-Jewish slogans have marked pro-Palestinian marches in some Communist-run municipalities in France. In Britain, many Jews who opposed the war in Iraq stayed away from antiwar rallies because of the strong anti-Israeli element. "Because of the negative stuff coming from the left, many Jews felt that their fates were tied to Israel, so they have to go along with those who support Israel regardless of the past," Mr. Lerman said. There is particular anxiety among the many European Jews who fled their North African homes after the creation of Israel in 1948 and again after the 1967 Middle East war. "They fear that their destiny is threatened by Islam on both sides of the Mediterranean," said Dominique Moisi, a senior adviser at the French Institute for International Relations. Those fears shape some of the most extreme voices on the new Jewish right. Giselle Littman, who was expelled from Egypt in 1957 and now publishes under the pseudonym Bat Yeor, argues in her latest book, "Eurabia: the Euro-Arab Axis," that Europe has consciously allied itself with the Arab world at the expense of Jews and the trans-Atlantic alliance."

myself why should he apologise? As it seems, the answer is simple: he dared to insult a Jew. He neither referred to any Jewish characteristic the journalist may have had , nor did he refer to the reporter’s ethnic origin. The Mayor was just insulting a man who happened to be a Jew. In politically correct Britain this is unacceptable. Mayor Livingstone wasn’t referring to the journalist as a Jew; he wasn’t even equating the ‘Jews’ with ‘concentration camp guards’. As a matter of fact, he was referring to a specific journalist in reaction to his conduct. And yet, this was enough to awaken the Board of Deputies of British Jews, an organisation that presents itself as the “voice of British Jews’. They now publicly demand the Mayor’s apology. We should ask why British Jews feel offended by the Mayor? Did he threaten any Jewish interests? Clearly not, and yet the Board of Deputies insist on presenting the Mayor’s comment as a racial assault. I would maintain that once again we are presented with a glimpse into the Jewish notion of brotherhood. Following the twisted logic of the Jewish Board of Deputies: offending one Jew is an assault against the entire ‘chosen race’. But it goes further; the incident makes it clear that in the eyes of the Board of Deputies, WW2 is in fact an internal Jewish affair. The fact that millions of non-Jews died in Nazi concentration camps is completely irrelevant for them, so is the fact that Britain scarified its best young men fighting Hitler. The Board of Deputies is very efficient in capitalizing on the Holocaust. For them, WW2 is an integral part of the Jewish history; no one else is allowed in. This applies of course to the Mayor’s usage of metaphorical language and to Prince Harry’s dressing code. The Board of Deputies, demands the Mayor’s apology but apparently they are not alone. As disgusting as it may sound, another morally deteriorated political figure has joined their demand. This is what PM Tony Blair had to say today:"Let's just apologise and move on." For PM Blair an apology is a political manoeuvre ... We should ask ourselves why Mr Blair, once the leader of a European political institution (he is still the leader but unfortunately they are not an institution anymore..), joined the Jewish clannish demand. I argue that morally deteriorated leaders often ally themselves with Jewish and Zionist organisations. Allying yourself with holocaust victims is proved to be the ultimate sufficient political body armour. Being amongst the survivors makes one look better than Hitler. Yes, let’s admit, PM Blair is still far better than Hitler but the fact that he feels a need to emphasize it occasionally makes it clear that he owes us, the Iraqi people and humanity a big apology himself."

"2005 is proving a worryingly anti-Semitic year so far in British politics. Excepting of course the total lack of anti-Semitism. This week it was Ken Livingstone's turn to be taken out and shot for remarks he made last Thursday to Oliver Finegold of the Evening Standard. If you haven't yet heard the offending remarks for yourself, do have a listen.What you don't hear of course is Ken holding a comb to his top lip and goose-stepping off down the street. Neither do you hear him tossing his copy of Mein Kampf in Finegold's smug faux-offended face. And of course neither of those things happened. Because although Livingstone may be many things - petulant, crapulent, annoying, whining, brash, insensitive, thoughtless - he isn't anti-Semitic. Or at least that's what those who claim to know him will have us believe.To give him his - ahem - due, he certainly doesn't come across that way. On this particular occasion he was merely telling a journalist whom he happens to consider a reprehensible scumbag precisely that. So he took the Holocaust's name in vain in the process? Hey, we've all done it. It may be crass and boorish, and it certainly isn't what they teach you at politician's school, but should we really condemn him for that? He was pissed, and pissed off, and he tossed a spirited, hyperbolic pop at someone he loathes. Fuck it. Good for him.Even better of course for Herr Finegold. We'll bet the fillings in our teeth that he has *never* been so happy to use his Hebrew credentials to win points. (And if we're wrong, we'll say, 'Yeah, whatever. Sorry.' If you force us.) ... What was truly offensive was Finegold's piece in the Standard on Tuesday, headed, 'I am at a loss why he felt the need to attack me.' No, but seriously. Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Finegold? Surely you can hazard a guess. Later in the same crocodile-tearful, weeping-to-the-headmaster piece, he writes: 'His refusal to apologise or see the harm he has done has only made the situation worse.' Oooh, the harm. In this however, he may have a point. Observe after all, how Livingstone's refusal to apologise has forced the Sturm und Standard to trivialise the memory of the Holocaust even further, dragging the dignity of the survivors through the mud of a wholly unnecessary round of political infantilism. The Friday Thing offered Finegold the opportunity to justify his and his rag's heavy-handedly hysterical 'Nazi Row' embroidery, but he politely declined. Probably too busy repeatedly high-and-low-fiving himself to climax. ... Sadly, we fear that with Tessa Jowell, Sally Hamwee, The Jewish Board of Deputies, The Holocaust Educational Trust, The Standards Board, the Conservative group at the London Assembly, various genuine Holocaust survivors, Michael 'Fucking' Howard, most of the world's press, Balls-out Blair *and* Page 3 stunna Peta, 18, from Essex all asking Ken to roll over in the bullshit and beg forgiveness for having a personality and a spine, this bandwagon is set to roll for a short while longer. Oy. This country is getting more like Nazi Germany every day."

"Fourteen minutes into his speech, the lights around Malik Zulu Shabazz went out. Give him credit: Shabazz is not one to curse the darkness, at least not when the Jews are available. "This is the best example we could have of white racism," Shabazz announced when the room fell dark. Across the Carnegie Mellon University campus, in Wean Hall, a hapless technician working the computer-run electrical system hit a wrong button and rushed to the scene to make amends. Campus police rescued him from Black Panther guards who wanted to parade him around the room as proof of a conspiracy. In the world of Malik Shabazz, there are no accidents. There are whites and Jews. Born Paris Lewis in Los Angeles, Shabazz was educated at Howard University, joined Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam and quickly became an acolyte of the late NOI spokesman Khalid Muhammad. When Muhammad died, Shabazz took over the New Black Panther Party for Defense. The New Black Panthers have been denounced by the original Black Panther leadership as a fraud, and they hold the distinction of being one of the few African-American organizations to be designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The SPLC usually devotes its time to fighting the Klan. Shabazz travels with a retinue of young men and women in jackboots, arm patches and berets. One wandered about with a nightstick. Another snapped photos of white people in the audience. "You take our names, we take yours," she said ... Shabazz told the audience to imagine itself inside the hold of a slave ship. He warned that the spectacle was "going out all over the city," seemingly unaware that the organizers had long ago ejected television crews and the student newspaper. A few words made their way through the dark about "white, Jewish involvement." All pretense gone, Shabazz's lecture, officially titled "Black History and the Role and Responsibility of the Black Community," became "Black History and the Role and Responsibility of the Jews." Every course needs a reading list and Shabazz introduced his. There were books about race, about white perfidy, black history and a standard in the canon of racial conspiracy: "The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews." It blames Jews for the European and American slave trade. Henry Ford's "The International Jew" was held aloft. The surprise recommendation was "Secrets of the Federal Reserve" by Eustace Mullins, an adherent of the Christian Identity religion. Shabazz has probably not read Mullins' other book, "The Mark of Canaan," wherein the author describes Jews and blacks descending from the same satanic strain ... Throughout his lecture, Shabazz referred to "so-called Jews" and "quote-unquote Jews" and "white Jews." "The people you see in Israel today are not the true original Jews. They are the Ashkenazim from Europe. Khazars from central Europe of the Caucasus mountains," Shabazz told the crowd. "What I'm saying is, you are the true Semites. And those -- Ariel Sharon and others in Israel, the Zionists, are from Europe." This theory is a left-handed adaptation of a 19th-century concept called "Anglo-Israelism," the belief that the true descendants of the 12 Tribes of Israel moved north and became the Nordic peoples and that the "other" Jews are satanic imposters. Shabazz simply changed Nordic to African. Much like Christian Identity racists, he believes in "Khazarian Jews." Possibly Shabazz can try this theory out at the next Aryan World Congress. Perhaps some other school will have him over to explain, with relentless optimism, how he is neither a racist nor an anti-Semite but, as he put it, "a warrior for my race." Putting war and race together is neither new nor, it is worth pointing out, something that requires much effort. Carnegie Mellon has a history department that could probably help to explain it. Let us hope the lights have not gone out there, too."

"[A]t the 2002 election, the increasingly corrupt mainstream parties that had championed Turkish-American ties self-destructed, leaving a vacuum that was filled by the subtle yet insidious Islamism of the Justice and Development (AK) Party. It's this combination of old leftism and new Islamism--much more than any mutual pique over Turkey's refusal to side with us in the Iraq war--that explains the collapse in relations. And what a collapse it has been. On a brief visit to Ankara earlier this month with Undersecretary of Defense Doug Feith, I found a poisonous atmosphere--one in which just about every politician and media outlet (secular and religious) preaches an extreme combination of America- and Jew-hatred that (like the Turkish artists) voluntarily goes far further than anything found in most of the Arab world's state-controlled press. If I hesitate to call it Nazi-like, that's only because Goebbels would probably have rejected much of it as too crude. Consider the Islamist newspaper Yeni Safak, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's favorite ... Among the paper's "scoops" have been the 1,000 Israeli soldiers deployed alongside U.S. forces in Iraq, and that U.S. forces have been harvesting the innards of dead Iraqis for sale on the U.S. "organ market." It's not much better in the secular press. The mainstream Hurriyet has accused Israeli hit squads of assassinating Turkish security personnel in Mosul, and the U.S. of starting an occupation of Indonesia under the guise of humanitarian assistance. At Sabah, a columnist last fall accused the U.S. ambassador to Turkey, Eric Edelman, of letting his "ethnic origins"--guess what, he's Jewish--determine his behavior. Mr. Edelman is indeed the all-too-rare foreign-service officer who takes seriously his obligation to defend America's image and interests abroad. The intellectual climate in which he's operating has gone so mad that he actually felt compelled to organize a conference call with scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey to explain that secret U.S. nuclear testing did not cause the recent tsunami.Never in an ostensibly friendly country have I had the impression of embassy staff so besieged ... It all sounds loony, I know. But such stories are told in all seriousness at the most powerful dinner tables in Ankara. The common thread is that almost everything the U.S. is doing in the world--even tsunami relief--has malevolent motivations, usually with the implication that we're acting as muscle for the Jews ... In the face of such slanders Turkish politicians have been utterly silent. In fact, Turkish parliamentarians themselves have accused the U.S. of "genocide" in Iraq, while Mr. Erdogan (who we once hoped would set for the Muslim world an example of democracy) was among the few world leaders to question the legitimacy of the Iraqi elections. When confronted, Turkish pols claim they can't risk going against "public opinion" ... I know that Mr. Feith (another Jew, the Turkish press didn't hesitate to note), and Ms. Rice after him, pressed Turkish leaders on the need to challenge some of the more dangerous rhetoric if they value the Turkey-U.S. relationship. There is no evidence yet that they got a satisfactory answer. Turkish leaders should understand that the "public opinion" they cite is still reversible ... "Faruk Loğoğlu, Turkey's ambassador to the United States, has sent a letter to the editor of The Wall Street Journal expressing his disappointment over an article written by Robert Pollock and its depiction of Turkish-U.S. relations. Referring to his dissatisfaction with certain phrases used by Pollock describing the atmosphere in Turkey as “Nazi-like,” Loğoğlu said in his letter that the article “…went beyond bounds,” the Anatolia news agency said. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has personally been expending efforts to correctly reflect the state of Turkish-U.S. relations to Turkish public opinion, he emphasized. Pollock's article, titled “The Sick Man of Europe -- Again,” described events and stories he heard during a recent trip accompanying Douglas Feith, the U.S. undersecretary of defense for policy, to Ankara and how the "special" 50-year relationship between the two NATO allies was suffering as a result of "absurd examples of national paranoia on the part of the Turks."

"Cardinal Roger Mahony marked the start of Lent today by calling for the Catholic Church itself to do penance, in part for not speaking out “forcefully enough'' against Nazi atrocities. Mahony, head of the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, made his comments in a message to parishioners on the first day of a 40-day season during which Catholics prepare for Easter by doing penance for sins and seeking spiritual renewal through prayer, fasting and good works. As we begin the Lenten journey this year, it is crucial to face the fact that the Church has not always been a light in the darkness. And so, penance and renewal are called for again and again,” he wrote. The sins the cardinal cited included the failure of the Church to speak more forcefully against the extermination of millions of people -- including six million Jews -- during the Nazi Holocaust. Tod Tamberg, the cardinal’s spokesman said that, as Mahony writes his own messages to Catholics in his archdiocese, he did not know for certain what prompted the cardinal to discuss the issue. But he speculated the recent 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp may have been a factor ... Rabbi Marvin Heir of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in West Los Angeles said even with Pius XII’s shortcomings there “was blame enough to go around the world.” He lauded the Cardinal’s message: “Cardinal Mahony’s statement is a correct and welcome. It was very forthright. I commend him for saying that the church could have done more. It’s more appropriate considering we recently celebrated the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.”Of current relations between the Catholic and Jewish community the Rabbi said that Pope John Paul II has done more than any other. “For the approximate 25 years he’s been around, he has been consistently a friend of the Jews,” he said. “The current Pope was the first to ask forgiveness for the church, the first to first to visit a synagogue and a concentration camp. “He was the first to commemorate the Yom Hachoah Holocaust Memorial Day at St. Peters Basilica,” said Rabbi Heir. Mahony’s message was delivered at a time when his archdiocese is facing lawsuits from nearly 500 plaintiffs in the clergy abuse scandal. He himself has been denounced for ordering two priests accused of child molestation to leave the country, evading prosecution, when he was bishop of Stockton two decades ago. “The Church continues to seek forgiveness and healing because of the terrible sin of clergy sexual abuse, acknowledging our mistakes and our insufficient response to the sin,” Mahony said in his Lenten message."

"Congress might still have to confirm the full extent of his powers, but there is little doubt that John Negroponte’s new position in Washington as George Bush’s first Director of National Intelligence (DNI) will be omnipotent. Not only will he be in overall control of all 15 agencies involved in the war against terrorism but he will have unprecedented power in deciding and executing policy, allocating budgets and giving the authority for covert operations. In appointing Negroponte, a career diplomat, Bush has brought a new and, to many, unwelcome twist to the US war on terror. Coming on top of his statement that he would support Israel if it mounted an attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities, and following recent talk of enforcing regime change in Iran and Syria, it sends the signal that the US is entering a new phase in its operations against those countries suspected of sponsoring al-Qaeda and its allies. Members of the US security community believe Negroponte will give the CIA and other agencies new focus by ending the rivalry that bedevils their operations ... Negroponte’s appointment seems to have been brought into being without any political checks and balances other than in reporting directly to the President. Not only does this make him the most powerful member of the Bush administration, but it also heightens fears the US could be returning to “dirty war” tactics which allowed CIA-trained operatives to pinpoint and neutralise known terrorist targets or obstructive political leaders. Extra-judicial killings of this kind have been in the CIA repertoire since it began its response to the 9/11 attacks. Sources close to the White House have already admitted the US might have to resort to this approach in its policy of fomenting internal regime changes in the Middle East. A senior strategist in Washington told the Sunday Herald that the US had no intention of getting bogged down as it had done in Iraq and that the next two stumbling blocks, Iran and Syria, would have to be approached in a more subtle way. “We are in no position to take any military action just now and, in any case, the odds are stacked against us,” he said. “ Iran is on the point of developing nuclear weapons and Syria is a patron of terrorism. Both have created a powerful alliance, both need to be brought round and both need to mend their ways. If they are not open to negotiation, we’ll have to take a more indirect approach.” For the moment, at least, the Iran question is being allowed to simmer and, during this week’s visit to Europe, Bush will publicly give his blessing to the EU approach which is based on discussion and containment. While this goes against the grain in Washington’s neo-conservative circles, there is a weary acceptance the US can do very little at the moment. Its forces are stretched in coping with operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and senior commanders have warned that any military attack on Iran will not be a walkover. Even pinpoint [sic] cruise missile attacks of the kind favoured by the Clinton administration would not neutralise Iran’s nuclear industry. The country’s atomic facilities are not concentrated in one place, as Iraq’s were in 1981 . Iran’s nuclear installations are dispersed throughout the country and the attacks would have to be carried out in several waves over several days. The option of destabilising the government and encouraging opposition groups is also not guaranteed. As the experience in Iraq has shown all too clearly, it is easy to execute regime change but it is extremely difficult to enforce the creation of a new administration. Without any clear alternative leadership, Iran could stumble into the same quagmire as post-war Iraq. Even so, there is a growing body of opinion in Washington that the “Serbian model” could be used to good effect. Just as Slobodan Milosevic lost power after it became obvious that he was unable to prevent coalition attacks, and that his continuing presence was the focus of international condemnation, so too could a series of setbacks force a similar situation in Iran and Syria. With aerial attacks out of the question at the moment, that leaves the option of covert operations aimed at making life impossible for the administration and paving the way for a more sympathetic government. Last week’s assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri is a good example of this approach. No serious group has claimed responsibility for the operation, which was well planned and efficiently executed, but the attack has created the kind of uncertainty that can encourage change ... As is the case with every action of this kind, if the assassination has the desired effect then the reasons for it can usually be rationalised. Last September, Mossad agents assassinated Hamas leader Izz el-Deen al-Sheikh Khalil in Damascus in revenge for his part in attacks on Israel. While operations of this kind are not normal Israeli policy, a Mossad spokesman at the time explained that the agency carefully assesses the risks, costs and benefit before authorising extra- judicial killings. While operations in other countries are not a priority in Mossad’s tactics, each case is considered on its merits, Khalil being an obvious target."

"Why would we run in the "Memo on the Margin" a three-part series on the origins of anti-Semitism? Today, especially when measured against a generation ago, Jews are well-integrated into every facet of America: academia, arts, finance, government, media, popular culture, etc. Where a generation or so ago Jews faced admission quotas regarding enrollment at universities, for example, today, many of those same institutions now have Jewish presidents. A similar story prevails throughout all other facets of American society. Anti-Semitism has always had an economic foundation. In Volume Four (1951) of his Story of Civilization, Historian Will Durant explains the peculiar role of Jews as financiers because of Christian and Muslim prohibitions against usury .. The fact that Jews were allowed to be usurious toward non-Jews but proscribed from practicing the same with Jews simply underscores the dislike with which they were regarded by gentiles. Jews rarely found need to borrow from Christians or Muslims, generally rasing capital among themselves, but Christians and Muslims often relied on Jewish loans. Nothing malicious is implied here, but for the gentile debtor two rates of interest - one almost at the level of a mere service charge among Jews and another at exorbitant rates for Christians -- always seemed a case of victimization by Jewish money-lenders. In this last entry from Durant's review, we pick up on the medieval history and see there were attempts in several instances of the total eradication of Jews from Europe. By Will and Ariel Durant (continued) ... The Jews of England, excluded from landholding and from the guilds, became merchants and financiers. Some waxed rich through usury, and all were hated for it. Several groups had planned to present American playwright Eve Ensler's performance on Saturday to help women affected by an 18-year insurgency in northern Uganda, as well as domestic and sexual abuse in this poor central African country. "Our major issue was to raise concerns about the rights of women, their suffering on the domestic and other fronts," women's rights activist Sarah Mukasa told The Associated Press Saturday. "Although the play has been banned, our point has been made," she said. On Thursday, Information Minister James Nsaba Buturo said the government took the decision to ban the one-day show because it did not focus on sexual violence as activists had said, but on women's private parts. "This is the stuff that homosexuals and pornography promoters feed on," Buturo said in a statement. "The Vagina Monologues" is based on interviews with more than 200 women about their memories and experiences of sexuality. It was an off-Broadway hit in New York after opening in October 1999."

"A change is happening in Israel's real estate industry over the past year as foreign investors - French, Americans, and even English - have entered the stagnant market. We are hear more about foreign investment in Israeli real estate, especially for luxury homes. Major reasons for the rising demand from Western countries are the strengthening euro, which increases the buying power of European investors; the slump in Israeli real estate prices, especially for office and commercial properties; Israel's economic growth; a steady rise in anti-Semitism around the world; and, most important of all, a change in Israel's diplomatic and security circumstances, which has boosted optimism among foreign investors, especially since Prime Minister Ariel Sharon unveiled his disengagement plan last year. In her first media interview, Anglo-Saxon chairperson Zvia Elazarov-Leviev told "Globes" that Anglo-Saxon Real Estate Agency Ltd. plans to conquer the foreign investor market, and develop Israel's real estate industry by initially approaching American and French Jews, and later Jews from other countries ... Anglo-Saxon is now in advanced negotiations to collaborate with US real estate firm Sheldon Good & Company, owned by the Good family. The company's website states, "Since 1965, Sheldon Good & Company has sold over 37,000 properties from coast to coast, throughout Canada and the Caribbean for a total value of over $8 billion." The company markets properties through public auctions, and claims an 85% success rate. Elazarov-Leviev says, "We plan to open Anglo-Saxon's main office in New York. The New York branch will expose Israeli projects marketed by Anglo-Saxon to US Jews, both second-hand apartments and commercial property. This is a breakthrough by the agency to new markets overseas, which is essential at a time when Jews in the Diaspora, especially in wealthy countries including the US, are more than ever showing great interest in buying property in Israel for homes or as an investment. In the next stage, we hope to expand the concept to France and other countries."

GTC Poland, subsidiary of Kardan NV, was awarded the Central & Eastern European Real Estate Quality Award for the Outstanding Company of the Year 2004, and the CEE Developer of the year 2004 title because of its contribution to development and investment in Central and Easter Europe. GTC Poland was chosen by a panel of judges from 16 leading Central European real estate companies from among 60 nominees, including European giants ING Real Estate, AIG/Lincoln, BEG, and Pro Logis. GTC Poland has been listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since May 2004, and is traded at a market cap of $675 million. It is one of Poland's largest real estate companies, with over one million sq.m. of property in the country."

"The Mordechai Yona group announced yesterday that Hefziba Building Development and Investment would build a large residential project in downtown Warsaw. The Yona group won a Bank Millennium tender for the sale of a 37.5-acre lot zoned for the construction of 3,000 apartments in 120 buildings. The Yona group paid $50 million. Yona said the apartments would be 80 sq.m., 100 sq.m., and 120 sq.m. each, larger than the average apartment size in the city. The project's total space is estimated at 300,000 sq.m., and the proceeds are estimated at $450 million, assuming a price of $1,300-1,700 per sq.m. Construction costs are estimated at $950 per sq.m."

"The Kardan sub-subsidiary plans to build a residential-commercial-office complex for €150 million. Kardan NV, Israel's pioneer in the Eastern Europe residential market, is expanding its investment in the region. Sub-subsidiary Global Trade Centre Romania (GTC Romania), held through Global Trade Centre SA, has signed a contract to buy a 30-acre lot in Bucharest for €15.5 million, of which €3 million was paid when the contract was signed. Kardan states that GTC Romania plans to build a residential-commercial-office complex on the site for €150 million, subject to obtaining the necessary building permits. The planned shopping center will be of the same quality and nature of GTC Poland’s successful shopping centers in Warsaw and Krakow - Galeria Mokotow and Galeria Kazimierz - but will offer more retail space than either projects; it is expected to be one of the largest retail centers in the region. Capitalizing on the improved macro economy of Romania and on the growth in the purchasing power of its citizens, Kardan intends to significantly expand its real estate operations in Romania, focusing on three sectors: office buildings, retail centers and residential developments."

"BiG Commercial Centers, controlled by brothers Roni and Yehuda Naftali, is expanding into India. The company operates seven commercial centers in Israel, and is building five more. It is also active in the US, and is now planning to enter the same business in India, together with a local partner, and with Eyal Atia's TSI. BiG Commercial Centers and its partners plan to build commercial centers in potentially lucrative areas. Under discussion are dozens of commercial centers, each covering 35,000-50,000 sq.m. BiG Commercial Centers also plans to expand into Europe, and is examining a number of potential sites for acquisition."

"Ampa Ltd. controlling shareholders, brothers Asher and Shlomi Fogel, hope that their seven lean years in the company have come to an end. Ampa today confirmed a "Globes" report from two weeks ago that the Nakash brothers had acquired half the controlling interest in the company. Papos International Ltd., owned in equal shares by Avi, Joseph, and Ralph Nakash and Ampa's current controlling shareholders, Asher and Shlomi Fogel, yesterday signed an agreement to acquire the controlling shares from Papos Holdings Ltd., which was previously controlled by the Fogel brothers, while the Nakash brothers held a minority interest ... An Ampa spokesman said today that the Nakash brothers planned to inject tens of millions of dollars into Ampa, so it could make new real estate, financial, and other investments over the coming year. The three Nakash brothers reside in the US. They invested in Ampa through Jordache Enterprises Inc., a leading jeans manufacturer, whose brands include US Polo Association, Maurice Sassoon, and Jordache. Ampa also announced today that the Nakash brothers were active in real estate, recently buying with partners $1.5 billion worth of properties in the US."

"No one believed that Medis, a veteran dream company with a long record of losses and no current revenue, had climbed to an almost inconceivable market cap of $430 million. Yes, that’s not a mistake - $430 million almost NIS 2 billion ... Medis reached its incredible $430 million market cap after skyrocketing 90% since August, and 400%, compared with its price in early 2003 ... Medis was founded in 1992 under the name Medis-El as a joint venture of Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) and a pair of American-Jewish investors: Robert K. Lifton, 77, who is currently chairman of Medis, and Howard Weingrow, 81, company president ... Lifton, a former chairman of the American Jewish Congress, is also a member of Bank Leumi’s investment committee in the US, and is involved in various pro-Israel groups and health organizations, including public committees, in the US. Weingrow has founded a number of research funds, mostly for children’s diseases. In the 1970s, he was treasurer of the Democratic Party ... The company also has hope for military applications. Medis has a cooperation agreement with General Dynamics, whose main business is the sale of various PDAs and mobile devices to the US Armed Forces ... Medis receives money from General Dynamics for milestones. Under the agreement between the two companies, Medis will begin shipping units and supplying them to the US Army, which has a $2 billion agreement with General Dynamics, in June."
