"Two men are accused to committing a terrifying crime against women. Federal agents say the men flew women to the U.S., forced them to work in a strip club, and then took all the money they made there. Aaron Ellis lives in the Livonia neighborhood where this alleged immigration scheme was taking place. He told 7 Action News, "It blew my mind. I would never think in this neighborhood that something like that would actually go on." According to a Federal Criminal Complaint, two men who rented the Livonia home were terrifying young women from the Ukraine after promising them waitressing jobs in the U.S. "One of the women actually come running out of the house pretty much screaming bloody murder," Ellis explained. "The neighbor next door on the other side had actually called the Livonia police." Agents are saying that Michail Aronov and Aleksander Maksimenko forced the women to work as strippers at Cheetah’s Night Club in Detroit. They were forced to work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, and then to give all the money to the two men. The men claimed that the women owed them thousands of dollars for the visas and work papers. The men also allegedly locked one of the women in the basement, threatened to beat and or kill both women, and forced them to have sex. "There is no reason why anyone should treat somebody like that," Ellis told 7 Action News. "They [officials] told me last night that we’d never see them again, and a bunch of us around here are extremely happy about that."

World Leaders Criticize Pope's Books,

"A German Jewish leader criticized the pope Saturday for making what he called an unacceptable comparison between abortion and the Holocaust in a new book. Paul Spiegel, the head of Germany's Central Council of Jews, told the Netzeitung daily that Pope John Paul II's statements reflect similar "unacceptable" comments made by a Roman Catholic Cardinal in Cologne. Spiegel was referring to a passage in "Memory and Identity: Conversations Between Millenniums," where the pope draws a broad comparison between abortion and the Holocaust, saying both came about when people decided to usurp "the law of God. The book is based on the pope's conversations in 1993 with two close friends from his native Poland. After noting that a legally elected parliament allowed Hitler's rise to power in Germany, which led to the Holocaust, the pope says: "We have to question the legal regulations that have been decided in the parliaments of present day democracies. The most direct association which comes to mind is the abortion laws ... "Parliaments which create and promulgate such laws must be aware that they are transgressing their powers and remain in open conflict with the law of God and the law of nature." Spiegel told the daily that "such statements show that the Roman Catholic Church "has not understood or does not want to understand that there is a tremendous difference between factory-like genocide and what women do to their bodies." Criticism for the book also came from a Greens parliamentarian, Volker Beck. "For the pope to draw a comparison between abortion and the Holocaust shows a lack of moral and ethical direction," Beck said in Berlin."

"Roman Catholic and Jewish leaders are working together on a major new exhibit that will open this spring to highlight Pope John Paul II and his long relationship with Jews. The exhibit titled "A Blessing to One another: Pope John Paul II and the Jewish People" will include photographs, documents and prayer books. Interest in the pope has escalated since his recent illness and hospitalization in Rome. The exhibit will open May 18, the pope's 85th birthday, on the campus of Xavier University. The Jesuit school in Cincinnati is a financial sponsor of the exhibit, along with the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati. The exhibit will be at Xavier until July 15 and then move to the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. From there, it will tour Roman Catholic and Jewish universities and other venues in the United States before traveling to Europe and becoming a permanent display in Israel. In March 2000, John Paul became the first pope in 36 years to visit Jerusalem, since Pope Paul VI in 1964. John Paul toured Christendom's sacred sites, visited Judaism's holiest place, the Western Wall, and paid respect at the Holocaust memorial. He has written extensively about the spiritual bonds between Catholics and Jews. Jerzy Kluger, a Jew who has been a friend since the pope's youth in Poland, has loaned his childhood prayer book to the exhibit ... There will be artifacts from Jewish businesses of the 1920s and 1930s in the pope's hometown of Wadowice, Poland, home to 8,000 people including a Jewish population of 2,000. The Catholic Telegraph, newspaper of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and The American Israelite, a Cincinnati-based Jewish newspaper, both published stories in their weekly editions Thursday to promote the upcoming exhibit. Officials at Xavier, the Hillel Jewish Student Center of Cincinnati and Yaffa Eliach, a former visiting professor at Xavier who later founded the Shtetl Foundation in New York, originated the concept for the exhibit. They met with the pope in Rome last October to outline the proposal and receive his support ... Eliach, a Holocaust survivor and retired professor of Judaic studies at Brooklyn College, said she had become fascinated with the pope's close ties with Jews during his life and believed the story needed to be told."

Russia Urged to Return Holy Jewish Text,

"All 100 senators have signed a letter urging the Russian government to return a collection of religious books to a New York-based orthodox Jewish group. The books were seized more than 80 years ago from Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson as part of a Soviet crackdown on religion. In December 2002, the Russian government returned some of the books to the Chabad-Lubavitch movement ... "We urge you to return these sacred religious texts, archives and manuscripts to Chabad, which would be a significant example of your government's commitment to justice, human rights and religious freedom," said the letter, written by Minnesota Republican Norm Coleman, a Jew born in Brooklyn, N.Y. Coleman said in a statement that he hoped President Bush would deliver the letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting later this month. The White House had no immediate comment on the letter. There was no answer at the Russian embassy Friday afternoon. The books are known as the "Schneerson collection," named for the prominent Lubavitcher family that included Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, a revered community leader in New York City who died a decade ago."

The synagogues will be linking up with approximately 600 other North American locations, as well as military bases around the world, for a national celebration of the Sabbath and a moving display of Jewish unity. The Shabbat Across America/Canada program, now in its ninth year, has been designed to introduce Jews with limited background in observance to the joy and beauty of the Jewish Sabbath. This year, in addition to hundreds of synagogues of all denominations across the United States and Canada, the program will also be held at a number of military bases. Holocaust exhibit opens at Binghamton museum,

"A major exhibit designed to educate children about the Holocaust has opened at a Binghamton museum. The exhibit at the Roberson Museum was developed by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It's entitled "Remember the Children." It chronicles the challenges faced by children and their families in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. The exhibit's story is based on actual diary accounts of children who recorded their impressions of life during the Holocaust. It's geared for children eight years old and older. The creators of the exhibit say it not only will help children learn about the Holocaust, but will educate them about speaking out against injustice. They say they worked to handle a difficult topic with sensitivity."

"Sixth-graders at the Galloway Community Charter School are a stone's throw away from a memorable Holocaust history project. The students hope to collect 6 million stones to commemorate the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The stones will be incorporated into a garden on the school grounds on Route 9. The students and their teacher know the project is ambitious. Roseanne Puccio, who teaches the elective course on the Holocaust, said her willingness to go along with the project was sparked by the realization that her young students really do not comprehend a number as large as 6 million outside the relative sterility of math."I thought maybe when they see what it really does look like, it will help them understand the magnitude of the Holocaust," she said. Puccio says she tried suggesting they collect 1.2 million stones to represent all the children killed, but the students were adamant about collecting 6 million. "I tried to talk them down, but they would have none of it," she said. "We are dedicated to collecting stones," student Kimberly Otero said. Puccio said she got the idea from a school in Tennessee that collected 6 million paperclips in six months. Her students wanted to collect something different, and discussed pennies and toothpicks ... She said a woman sitting next to her at a beauty salon last weekend heard her talking about the project and wants to send a stone with a story about her sister-in-law, a Holocaust survivor."

Not Jewish enough to marry a Cohen,

"Irina Plotnikov cannot marry the man she loves, Shmuel Cohen, even though she is Jewish according to halakha (Jewish religious law). A rabbinic court in Jerusalem ruled recently that even though Plotnikov is Jewish, she is not eligible to marry a Cohen since her father is not Jewish. According to Jewish tradition, people with the surname Cohen are descendants of the priests that served in the Temple in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago.The couple were shocked by the court's verdict. "None of the rabbis had told us there might be a problem," Plotnikov says.
Plotnikov immigrated to Israel from the former Soviet Union (FSU) in 1992. Last summer she met Cohen, a retired career army man, and they fell in love. A short while after meeting, they decided to wed. "I was prepared to get married without going through the rabbinate, but it's very important to my boyfriend, because he is from a traditional family," Plotnikov says. When the couple registered at the rabbinate, the marriage registrar referred Plotnikov to a rabbinic court for a process for ascertaining Jewishness. This is a procedure which all immigrants from the FSU are required to undergo if they want to marry. After presenting documents and hearing testimony from witnesses on Plotnikov's behalf, the rabbinic court confirmed that Plotnikov is Jewish and single and ruled that "she can be married in accordance with Jewish tradition, except to a Cohen." Since civil marriage and non-Orthodox religious marriage in Israel are not legally recognized, the sole option remaining to the couple is to wed overseas. Cohen says that he's afraid to tell his religious family about the rabbinic court's ruling. "I've never gone abroad, but to marry Irina I will be delighted to go. I respect the religious world, but there's a limit to how far I am willing for our privacy to be invaded." Alex Tantzer, who heads a campaign to promote civil marriage, says that Plotnikov's case is an extreme example of the treatment that tens of thousands of immigrants from the FSU receive at the hands of the rabbinic establishment. "I suggest that those same rabbis who ruled there are Jews who are not Jewish enough to marry Cohens be examined themselves. Perhaps they too have, heaven forbid, a non-Jewish father in their past." Rabbi Shaul Farber, of the Itim institute for advice on the Jewish circle of life, says the ban on Plotnikov and Cohen marrying is enshrined in a halakhic rule that is similar to the rule barring the marriage of a Cohen and a divorcee. However, he believes that if the couple marries in a civil ceremony or if Plotnikov becomes pregnant, the rabbinate may agree to recognize the marriage retroactively. Rabbi Farber says that girls from religious families in Israel who were born as a result of in vitro fertilization can expect to face a similar problem. The reason for this is that such families made sure to use sperm from non-Jewish donors, to avoid accidental forbidden marriage."

"Radio station Good Hope FM has apologised for an "anti-Jewish" joke broadcast late last year. The apology, made on air on Thursday night, came after a complaint by the Jewish Board of Deputies. The board's media committee chairperson, David Hersch, said the joke had been anti-Jewish and in bad taste. The apology was part of a legal agreement between the parties, he said. "The country is trying to get away from hate speech. What we have is an apology that is fairly significant and sets a precedent to others," said Hersch. Asked what the joke was about, Hersch said he couldn't remember the exact content."

"Tony Blair today sought to patch up relations with Britain's Jewish community, pledging in an interview in the Jewish Chronicle to "never, ever, ever" attack Michael Howard's religious background. After a fortnight which has seen Labour criticised for creating campaign posters some considered anti-semitic and Labour's mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, hit a media firestorm after likening a Jewish reporter to a concentration camp guard, the prime minister said he would always be "a very, very strong supporter of the Jewish community and Israel". Today Mr Livingstone was keeping quiet over ongoing demands for an apology, as the International Olympic Committee toured the capital, but his office released figures saying that the mayor had received two-to-one support from correspondents to City Hall. In the Jewish Chronicle interview, published today and conducted in Downing Street, Mr Blair repeats his call on Mr Livingstone to apologise to the Evening Standard reporter Oliver Finegold. The PM says the mayor "should have withdrawn the comment immediately" once he realised the journalist was Jewish. He says: "I'm sure that is what in truth he wants to do. Well, he should do it." Mr Blair adds: "I'm not surprised that people in the Jewish community are asking questions" in the wake of "great glaring headlines" over both the posters row and Mr Livingstone's war with the Evening Standard. The PM insists he has not seen the two posters - put up for a vote on the Labour party website - himself, but says they were "not intended to cause any offence to anyone in the Jewish community".

"Tony Blair has pledged to "never, ever, ever" attack Tory leader Michael Howard over his Jewish beliefs. The prime minister told the Jewish Chronicle: "If you look at what I do, I attack Michael Howard politically." Mr Blair also distanced himself from recent Labour campaign posters featuring Mr Howard, which critics claimed were "anti-Semitic". These were "not intended to cause any offence to anyone on the Jewish community," Mr Blair insisted. 'Outrageous' One poster depicted Mr Howard and his shadow chancellor Oliver Letwin, who is also Jewish, as flying pigs.Another pictured the Tory leader swinging a pocket watch on a chain, which critics said echoed the Jewish money lender Shylock in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. Others compared the image to the character Fagin in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. Labour has since taken the designs of its website, saying members had preferred other designs. During his interview with the Jewish Chronicle, Mr Blair said: "I've been a very strong supporter of the Jewish community and Israel, and will always be so." Pressed on whether he would draw attention to Mr Howard's Jewish beliefs in an attempt to attract Muslim support, he replied: "The idea that I would allow anybody to make such a charge is outrageous. It's untrue. "If you look what I do, I attack Michael Howard politically. I would never, ever, ever attack him on that basis." Livingstone row Mr Blair also defended his party's attitude towards the Jewish community, pointing out that it was his government that had introduced the Holocaust Memorial Day. "A rabbi has declared that reality shows Pimp My Ride and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition are "hip and healing." In a piece for Newsweek, Rabbi Marc Gellman praised both shows for performing good deeds for needy people. "Who would have thought that the prophets for this generation of spiritually acceptable television would be a hip-hop rapper named Xzibit and an ex-J Crew model named Ty Pennington," Gellman wrote. "I hereby proclaim the Gospel of Pimp My Ride and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. "What I see in these two shows is a saving radiant glimmer of how television married to compassion (and a blown 450cc short block engine) can produce programs that are both hip and healing, both popular and profound." He continued: "For those of you who have only just returned from Alpha Centauri and have not yet seen these shows, 'Pimp' is on MTV. That in and of itself is astounding because MTV is the Mt. Sinai of the grave-disturbance theory. 'Makeover' is on ABC, which in its own act of moral blindness brings us 'Desperate Housewives' immediately following 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.'"

"On Wednesday, the NHL became the No Hockey League. Gary Bettman is the commissioner of that one, too. Bettman, the former NBA executive who came to the NHL in 1993 to make it a major U.S. sport, took it down a course that ended up making it a nonexistent game for the 2004-05 season. For the first time since 1919, NHL players will not hoist the Stanley Cup. Instead, Bettman provided a parade of NHL owners holding out tin cups. Poor millionaires, Bettman told us, the players' gargantuan salaries have drained their budgets ... Bettman took a league with a stable history, a league full of the most modest and likable athletes in pro sports, a league that brought nations together, and blew it up. It is no more. It will not be the same. Oh, the NHL will come back. Bettman and his owners have enough buried cash to see to that. But it will return with a broken tradition and an altered mood. Fans will be estranged from players. Players will resent the owners. Alienation will weaken what was once an open and friendly Canadian game. The coolest game on Earth will return as cold commerce. Before it recovers, there will be more erosion of the NHL's goodness and its greatness. Replacement players may take the ice. Some franchises may fold. Fans will leave and never return. On the 25th anniversary of the "Miracle On Ice," the Olympic triumph that awakened the wider U.S. audience to hockey's thrill, Bettman has wrought the Debacle On Ice. When he appeared on TV to declare the season dead at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Bettman had a Nixonian 5 o'clock shadow and a Nixonian knack for playing the victim and twisting the truth. "If you want to know how I feel, I'll summarize it in one word -- terrible," he said. It's true that Bettman has been terrible, a terrible steward, a terrible negotiator over the 154-day lockout. But that's not the word that he should have used to summarize how he feels, or rather should feel. The right word would be "responsible." Responsibility has not been a notion to which Bettman has paid much regard in his leadership of the NHL. Instead, he trumpeted reckless growth, overseeing an expansion from 24 to 30 teams. During his tenure, the league lost much of its Canadian foundation. Teams pulled out of Quebec and Winnipeg to move to Colorado and Phoenix. Other Canadian teams struggled financially ... Bettman negotiated a collective bargaining agreement that he now says is beyond the owners' ability to honor. He sought to make the NHL a television sport, only to see ratings slip below those of arena football -- and guaranteed TV payments fade to zero. He talked about speeding up the game but instead watched goaltenders' pads expand, scoring drop and the game's grace and fury disappear into clutching, trapping monotony. Bettman came to the NHL with a reputation as a business wizard, but he is the wizard who broke the spell. With this lockout and this lost season, he opened fans' eyes to how to live without professional hockey. Outside its traditional markets, the disinterest in the NHL's disappearance was amazing. Where Bettman had planted, no roots had taken. There would be hope for a renewed NHL if Bettman had said what must be said before any true redemption: "I'm sorry."

"With no end in sight to the National Hockey League (NHL) lockout, Montreal fans are turning to the next best thing – the rock ’n’ sock’em North American Hockey League (NAHL). “People are tired of paying $150 to watch hockey and this is great value at $14 per ticket,” said Sheldon Ludwick, one of the Jewish co-owners of the defending league champion Verdun Dragons. “I enjoy these games more than the NHL. These players really put their heart and soul into the game.

Verdun is a borough of Montreal. The team normally plays out of a 5,000-seat auditorium. But last weekend, they played both of their home games at the Bell Centre, home of the Canadiens.  If the NHL season is cancelled, more games will be held at this large 21,000-seat venue. Ludwick and his close friend, Lee Karls, are partners in a business called Karmin Industries, which distributes lines of puzzles, food, clothing, lingerie and general merchandise. They were previously associated with a team in Granby, which folded last June ... Jewish ownership in Montreal sports franchises is nothing new. Scribes to begin work on Torah,

"Every letter on a Torah must be in the right position. The parchment comes from a kosher animal, and the sharpened quill is dipped in special ink. On Sunday, members of the West Valley Jewish community will begin a yearlong process by transcribing the first lines of a Torah commissioned by Chabad of the West Valley. This is the first time this spiritual text has been transcribed in the West Valley. "The Torah scroll embodies the soul of the Jewish people," said Rabbi Sholom Lew, one of the two rabbis selected to transcribe the sacred document. It is written from scratch. To become a scribe, one must undergo many training requirements, including studying nuances of Jewish law. Each and every letter must be correct and in the right position.
"If one letter is missing out of the six hundred thousand letters, it is useless," Lew said.
"The idea of the Torah is if one letter is missing, it may not change the meaning or the nuance, but it is still an invalid scroll. Just like if one person is missing from the community it is not whole" ... The first lines of the Torah will be transcribed at 2 p.m. Sunday at Arrowhead Elementary School, 7490 W. Union Hills Drive, Glendale. Although the Torah will be the main attraction, other events are planned, including certified scribes writing names on pieces of parchment and an arts and crafts center where children will be invited to make covers for mezuzas - small containers made of wood, plastic or metal - or Torah key chains."

BBC apologizes for airing erroneous story on IDF soldier,

"The British Broadcasting Corporation apologized Thursday for an item on a religious program that angered the Jewish community by "demonizing" Israel, The Daily Telegraph reported on Friday. Dozens of complaints have been received about a story on BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day during the Today program that suggested a Muslim corporal in the Israel Defense Forces had been jailed for refusing to shoot Palestinian children, according to The Telegraph. The contributor, the Rev. Dr. John Bell, also apologized and admitted his story could have been interpreted as "furtive racism" at a time when "Jewish sensitivity in Britain is running high because of anti-Semitism." A row continues over London mayor Ken Livingstone's refusal to apologise for likening a Jewish newspaper reporter to a concentration camp guard. Dr. Bell said he did not intend to cause offense and acknowledged that aspects of his story were incorrect, the British daily reported. Last Thursday Dr. Bell, of the Iona Community, an ecumenical Christian organisation, gave an account of the experiences of a Muslim in the IDF. On the radio, Dr. Bell claimed he met the former corporal, an Arab Israeli called Adam, 19, in a Lebanese restaurant in Vancouver two years ago. Dr. Bell said he was a soldier of "Palestinian Muslim stock, born in the state of Israel" who had been conscripted into the army. He said the soldier told him he saved many lives by killing a suicide bomber who boarded a bus and he related how he was jailed for disobeying an order to shoot Palestinian schoolchildren, the Telegraph reported. The suggestion that the IDF would order soldiers to kill defenseless children outraged the Jewish community. Thursday a spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews said: "This story appears to be a fabrication seeking to demonize Israel ... Jewish listeners contacted the BBC to point out that elements of the story could not be true. Israeli Arabs are exempt from conscription and it would be almost impossible for a soldier aged 19 to be promoted to corporal. The BBC's apology said the corporation had been "unable to find any evidence to support the story". The Israeli authorities told the corporation that there was no proof of the soldier's existence. Dr. Bell said he had wrongly assumed that the soldier had been conscripted and claimed that the soldier was 21, not 19."

"President George W Bush added a new twist to the international tension over Iran's nuclear programme last night by pledging to support Israel if it tries to destroy the Islamic regime's capacity to make an atomic bomb. Asked whether he would back Israel if it raided Teheran's nuclear facilities, Mr Bush first expressed cautious solidarity with European efforts, led by Britain, France and Germany, to negotiate with Iran. But he quickly qualified himself, adding that all nations should be concerned about whether Iran could make nuclear weapons. "Clearly, if I was the leader of Israel and I'd listened to some of the statements by the Iranian ayatollahs that regarded the security of my country, I'd be concerned about Iran having a nuclear weapon as well. And in that Israel is our ally, and in that we've made a very strong commitment to support Israel, we will support Israel if her security is threatened." His comments appeared to be a departure from the administration's line that there are no plans to attack at present and that Washington backs European diplomatic efforts. The remarks may have reflected Mr Bush's personal thinking on an issue causing deep concern in Washington ... Israel, meanwhile, has given warning about Iran's nuclear ambitions, saying that an Iranian bomb might be only six months away and that such a weapon would pose a grave risk to its security. Mr Bush repeated the reasons for America's anxiety: "Remember, this all started when we found [Iran] enriching uranium in an undeclared fashion, and it happened because somebody told on them" ... Iran's influential former president, Hashemi Rafsanjani, speaking yesterday after meeting the Syrian prime minister, Mohammad Naji al-Otari, said his country needed to create a powerful alliance with Syria, Iraq and other Arab countries. Mr Rafsanjani, widely expected to run in Iran's June presidential elections, said the region must "stay completely vigilant vis-a-vis the US and Israeli plots".

Company's President Gets Physical With WAVE 3 Investigator,

"WAVE 3 Investigator Eric Flack was attacked Monday afternoon as he was conducting an investigation into a local company. Now that company's president will face assault charges after an interview turned violent. We were working on a follow up report to an Investigation we first brought our viewers last May. The company is called PC Pro, or Louisville Pro. Louisville Pro claims to be a multi-level marketing operation. But we found evidence it may be a pyramid scam. We sent our undercover cameras inside Louisville Pro for what we were told would be an interview for a sales job. But it turned out to be a sales pitch for the water filtration system the company is selling. A Louisville Pro worker, drinking from a water bottle he bought from the company, told our undercover camera: an upfront investment was a key to success at the company. "That's why I'm telling you if you don't have any money, you probably want to get a job first," the Louisville Pro worker said, "where you can just have a little money," to get started with. The Louisville Better Business Bureau told us that's a red flag for a pyramid scam. "The fact that people are spending substantial dollars up front to buy products leads me to think a lot of people are going to end up losing money in this venture," said Louisville Better Business Bureau President Charlie Mattingly. The Louisville Pro worker we spoke with last year, was down $800 on his initial $1,000 investment. And he told us how he was instructed to make money. "I'll come down here 2, 3 hours a night, and get a couple phone calls in," the worker said. "Try to get some people down here to check out the business. They come down here and they're interested, and they are coming up under me. And I'm making money. Making money." At the time, Louisville Pro founder Moshe Ohayon, denied Louisville Pro was a pyramid scam. "We do everything we can to stay as ethical as possible," Ohayon said. And when we went back Monday, it was business as usual at Louisville Pro. We wanted to ask company execs about new accusations of shady business practices. This time, it was Eli Ohayon, another company founder, in front of our camera. But the only talking Eli Ohayon did was with his hands. All of it was caught on tape. The attack happened in the building's common area hallway, outside Louisville Pro's offices. Company president Eli Ohayon showed up, as Flack was questioning two of his co workers. As Flack started asking questions, Ohayon's two coworkers started to push Photojournalist Scott Utterback. That's when Ohayon came after Flack. According to Flack and the videotape of the encounter, Ohayon put one hand around Flack's neck, and punched him in the face at least twice with his other hand. Seconds later, he kneed Flack in the head as the reporter tried to break away. When Flack tried to call 911, Ohayon came at him again, putting Flack in a headlock until his two co-workers pulled him off. Flack finally was able to call police, but when they went up to Louisville Pro's offices to get Ohayon, he was gone. Flack has sworn out a warrant for Ohayon's arrest. He will be charged with 4th degree assault and criminal mischief. As for our report, we wanted to get answers about recent accusations of identity theft against Louisville Pro, brought by another company sharing the same building."

Spielberg's Munich Olympics Film Set for Dec. 23,

"Steven Spielberg plans a summer start for his delayed movie about the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, and a Dec. 23 release in theaters. The untitled project, a co-production between Universal Pictures and Spielberg's DreamWorks, had been set to go before the cameras last year. Casting was under way when Spielberg decided to have "Angels in America" playwright Tony Kushner do a rewrite on the project, on which writers Eric Roth ("Forrest Gump") and Charles Randolph ("The Interpreter") also had worked. With the project postponed, Spielberg moved quickly to begin filming his adaptation of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds," starring Tom Cruise. Paramount will release it June 29. Details about the Olympics film have been carefully guarded. Universal will release it domestically. The studio's year-end lineup is potentially formidable because it also includes such films as Peter Jackson's "King Kong" (Dec. 14) and the screen version of the Mel Brooks musical "The Producers" (Dec. 21)."

"Claus Cremer, deputy chairman of the National Democratic Party in North Rhine-Westphalia state, took a passage of the Talmud out of context last June to insinuate that Judaism endorses child abuse, court spokesman Volker Talarowski said. Cremer, speaking in the western city of Bochum, went on to say that synagogues had no place in Bochum or anywhere else in the world, according to the spokesman. The Bochum court sentenced Cremer to three years' probation. Prosecutors had sought 18 months in jail. Cremer argued that his speech was covered by constitutional free speech guarantees.
The party, known by its German initials NPD, caused outrage last month by walking out of a Saxony state parliament ceremony marking 60 years since the liberation of the Nazis' Auschwitz death camp. The NPD won 9 percent of the vote last fall in Saxony, the only place where it has seats in a state legislature."

"An Iraqi whose corpse was photographed with grinning U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib died under CIA interrogation while in a position condemned by human rights groups as torture - suspended by his wrists, with his hands cuffed behind his back, according to reports reviewed by The Associated Press. The death of the prisoner, Manadel al-Jamadi, became known last year when the Abu Ghraib prison scandal broke. The U.S. military said back then that the death had been ruled a homicide. But the exact circumstances under which the man died were not disclosed at the time. The prisoner died in a position known as "Palestinian hanging," the documents reviewed by The AP show. It is unclear whether that position was approved by the Bush administration for use in CIA interrogations. The spy agency, which faces congressional scrutiny over its detention and interrogation of terror suspects at the Baghdad prison and elsewhere, declined to comment for this story, as did the Justice Department. Al-Jamadi was one of the CIA's "ghost" detainees at Abu Ghraib - prisoners being held secretly by the agency. His death in November 2003 became public with the release of photos of Abu Ghraib guards giving a thumbs-up over his bruised and puffy-faced corpse, which had been packed in ice. One of those guards was Pvt. Charles Graner, who last month received 10 years in a military prison for abusing detainees. Al-Jamadi died in a prison shower room during about a half-hour of questioning, before interrogators could extract any information, according to the documents, which consist of statements from Army prison guards to investigators with the military and the CIA's Inspector General's office. One Army guard, Sgt. Jeffery Frost, said the prisoner's arms were stretched behind him in a way he had never before seen. Frost told investigators he was surprised al-Jamadi's arms "didn't pop out of their sockets," according to a summary of his interview. Frost and other guards had been summoned to reposition al-Jamadi, who an interrogator said was not cooperating. As the guards released the shackles and lowered al-Jamadi, blood gushed from his mouth "as if a faucet had been turned on," according to the interview summary. The military pathologist who ruled the case a homicide found several broken ribs and concluded al-Jamadi died from pressure to the chest and difficulty breathing. Dr. Michael Baden, a distinguished civilian pathologist who reviewed the autopsy for a defense attorney in the case, agreed in an interview that the position in which al-Jamadi was suspended could have contributed to his death. Dr. Vincent Iacopino, director of research for Physicians for Human Rights, called the hyper-extension of the arms behind the back "clear and simple torture." The European Court of Human Rights found Turkey guilty of torture in 1996 in a case of Palestinian hanging - a technique Iacopino said is used worldwide but named for its alleged use by Israel in the Palestinian territories."

"Does Ward Churchill have a dream gig at the University of Colorado, or what? Under the cover of academic freedom, which is a good thing, Churchill can say and do just about anything he pleases, no matter how outrageous, absurd or quasi-treasonous, and he still gets to keep his job as a tenured professor of ethnic studies at Colorado. Imagine how long many of us would remain in our jobs -- and rightly so -- if we wrote the following, as Churchill did, about the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001: "America and Americans were only receiving the bill for what they'd already done. Payback, as they say, can be a real (expletive). He goes on to write, "One can discern a certain optimism -- it might even be called humanitarianism -- imbedded in the thinking of those who presided over the very limited actions conducted on September 11." In a surreal post-9/11 rant titled "'Some People Push Back': On the Justice of Roosting Chickens," Churchill spewed that comment and others, including: The people who died in the World Trade Center attack were "little (Adolf) Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers." FYI: Eichmann was Adolph Hitler's hand-picked monster in charge of killing Jews during World War II ... Churchill also kept his position despite an avalanche of challenges by unquestionably authentic Native Americans to his claims of Indian ancestry. Additionally, Stuart Steers of the Denver Rocky Mountain News reported, "The former chairman of the Keetoowah band of Cherokee Indians says University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill was given an honorary membership that required no proof of Cherokee heritage." Kevin Flynn, another reporter for the Rocky, wrote, "Churchill traces part of his American Indian lineage to Joshua Tyner, a Revolutionary War veteran from Georgia. But Tyner listed himself on the 1820 census as "white" ... genealogy records researched by the Rocky Mountain News show that even if Joshua Tyner had been a full-blooded Indian, he would have provided Churchill with only one-sixty-fourth Indian blood." All of this not only eviscerates the credibility of Churchill's Native-American self-proclamation, it should give the University of Colorado plenty of reason to question the bona fides of the man's resume. For years, native critics have insisted that Ward Churchill is no more an American Indian than was Sir Winston Churchill. During those years, Churchill has crafted an academic and professional resume that is replete with lofty-sounding Native American credentials. "One of the most outspoken of Native American activists and scholars in North America and a leading analyst of indigenous issues," touts the Web site Speakout. Suzan Shown Harjo, a Cheyenne/Hodulgee Muscogee, is the respected president and executive director of the Morning Star Institute, a national Indian rights and cultural-advocacy organization. Harjo torched Churchill in a message she sent to Colorado's chancellor and Board of Regents: "The University of Colorado promotes this deception by holding Churchill out as a Native person. Many Native Peoples have called this deception to the attention of the University of Colorado, only to be ignored and to see Churchill promoted and given tenure. Churchill ... has never been able to substantiate any of his many, varied and conflicting claims to be a Native person. He stands exposed and isolated in the community of Native Peoples, but cloaked in the security of the University of Colorado. It is long past time that the university take action to remove itself as a participant in Churchill's deception." The American Indian Movement (AIM) "once again is vehemently and emphatically repudiating and condemning the outrageous statements made by academic, literary and Indian fraud Ward Churchill in relationship to the 9/11 tragedy in New York City that claimed thousands of innocent people's lives." Harjo and AIM speak for all true Native-American people."

"A U.S. special envoy on holocaust issues said Wednesday that persecution of Jews is still common in Europe. A presentation, given by Edward B. O’Donnell, Jr. about anti-Semitism in Europe was held on Wednesday in the Croft Institute. O’Donnell, a Memphis native, was appointed Ambassador of Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues by President Bush in December of 2003. Prior to his appointment as ambassador, O’Donnell had been a career foreign service officer since 1975.O’Donnell discussed anti-Semitism, hostility toward Jews— both as individuals or collectively — on political and religious issues. Anti-Semitism has increased over the past four years, especially in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, O’Donnell said. Even though anti-Semitism has existed for centuries, the recent increase has compelled nations to join multi-lateral efforts to restore safety to the Jewish communities. Acts of violence against Jews can be seen all over Europe, he said. Physical attacks in Jewish communities are common, but anti-Semitism can also be seen through the media, such as political cartoons. He also said Jewish minorities across the continent are still being persecuted for their beliefs. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which is comprised of 55 nations, is one of the many international examples of the efforts to stop hate crimes and anti-Semitism in Europe. The United States is committed to fighting anti-Semitism and defending freedom, he said. In 2004, the U.S. government passed the Global Anti-Semitism Act and has been encouraging other countries to form hate-crime and anti-Semitism legislation laws. The Holocaust is known as the most violent hate-crime of all time, he said. Over 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. “The Holocaust reminds us of the importance of fighting anti-Semitism today,” O’Donnell said. “It is our responsibility to educate the younger students to do everything possible to insure that nothing like the Holocaust ever happens again.” In 1998, the Holocaust Education Task Force was formed. It consists of 20 nations working together on increasing Holocaust education, remembrance and research. O’Donnell has dedicated over half of his career to European economic and political issues. He has lived in Vienna, Bonn, Berlin and Frankfurt. His knowledge on the Holocaust has taken him around the world to help others become more informed. "A transcript released Thursday of Harvard President Lawrence Summers' remarks on women in science shows him arguing that intrinsic differences between the sexes, along with family pressure and employer demands, probably play a bigger role than cultural factors and discrimination in explaining why fewer women than men have top science jobs ... The university also posted a letter of support for Summers from James R. Houghton, senior member of the Harvard Corporation, the school's governing board. Summers faced a contentious faculty meeting over his remarks and leadership style earlier this week. "We know that he genuinely and deeply regrets having spoken as he did, and that he is strongly committed, as we are, to Harvard's pursuit of focused institutional approaches to advancing opportunities for women in science and also in academic life more broadly," Houghton wrote. The transcript appears to support Summers' contention that he was discussing how, in the general population, men are more likely to have science and math test scores in the highest and lowest ranges, while women's scores are more clustered in the middle. But in explaining why fewer women scientists rise to the top, Summers said he was inclined to favor family pressure and biology as explanations over discrimination and social factors."

"Any state -- be it a Muslim, Christian, Mormon, Black or White state - which, like Israel, defines itself as the state of a particular religion, race, or ethnic group must, logically and inevitably, discriminate against people within its borders who are not of the favored race, religion or ethnicity and deny them their full human rights. Israel has declared itself to be a Jewish state and a democratic state. What does it mean to be a Jewish state? It means, according to the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel, Israel's declaration of independence, signed May 14, 1948, that the sovereign authority in Israel is the Jewish people and only the Jewish people: "This right is the natural right of the Jewish people to be masters of their own fate, like all other nations, in their own sovereign state." Thus Jews have rights in Israel that non-Jews do not -- such as the right to move to Israel and receive automatic citizenship. Section 7A(1) of the Basic Law of Israel explicitly prevents Israeli citizens -- Arab or Jewish -- from using the "democratic" system of Israeli elections to challenge the inferior status of Arabs under the law; it restricts who can run for political office with this language: "A candidates' list shall not participate in elections to the Knesset if among its goals or deeds, either expressly or impliedly, are one of the following: (1) The negation of the existence of the State of Israel as the State of the Jewish People." In a 1989 Israeli Supreme Court ruling (reported in the 1991 Israel Law Review, Vol. 25, p. 219, published by the Faculty of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) Justice S. Levine, speaking for the majority, ruled that this law meant that a political party could not run candidates if it intended to achieve the cancellation of one of the fundamental tenets of the State - namely "the existence of a Jewish majority, the granting of preference to Jews in matters of immigration, and the existence of close and reciprocal relations between the State and the Jews of the Diaspora."

"A prominent Israeli journalist has lambasted the criminality and racism of the Israeli justice system. Amira Hass, who writes for the Israeli daily Ha'aretz, criticised the exoneration of an Israeli soldier who murdered a Palestinian school child last October. The soldier, identified only by the initial of his first name 'R', shot and killed 13-year-old Iman al-Hams in broad daylight while she walking to school on October 5th. Minutes later, the same soldier emptied 17 bullets into the Iman's body to insure she died. "Iman's name became famous because of the lies of the soldiers. Her futile death was reported in the Israeli media, which very rarely reports on dead Palestinians. There is a long list of Palestinian civilians whose blood was spilled neither in battle nor because they endangered someone and their blood has evaporated from
our consciousness." Hass dismissed the Israeli army spokespersons who repeatedly claim that the killing of innocent Palestinians only occurs when their forces are under attack, as propaganda lies. She points out that it is the occupation soldiers who provoke the Palestinians for the sole purpose of killing them. In her column Hass asks why Israeli soldiers and officers who kill Palestinian civilians are not arrested and put on trial. She further attests that Israel is misleading the world's public opinion on the reality of the situation in Palestine. "That's the upside down method: Occupy them, their land, their natural resources, take over their lives and judge them as criminals when they resist us. "If the Palestinians had warplanes and tanks so their killing was sterile, they would prefer to use those. And then, even if they killed Jewish civilians, they would not be called murderers with blood on their hands but enemy soldiers and when caught, they would be considered prisoners of war. If the policy makers of the Oslo Accords were really thinking about peace, they would have freed all those prisoners."

With or without the confirmed killing, the soldiers in R.'s unit, with him or without him at the Girit outpost in Rafah, killed the 13-year-old schoolgirl who was walking on October 5 with her schoolbag in broad daylight. She wasn't even infiltrating in the middle of the night, trying to find work in Israel. Someone in the IDF, after all, drafted the orders that allow soldiers to shoot Palestinians walking in an open field near an IDF outpost or a settlement built on that field. Someone, after all, gave the order that day to shoot the girl. Someone executed the order. With perjury or without it, the girl is not coming back to life. An army that takes pride in its night-vision equipment, in its precise sniping instruments, that same army's soldiers could not see it was a little girl? Iman's name became famous because of the perjury of the soldiers. Her futile death was reported in the Israeli media, which very rarely reports on dead Palestinians. There is a long list of Palestinian civilians whose blood was spilled neither in battle nor because they endangered someone, and their blood has evaporated from our consciousness. What about the blood of Rasmiye Arar, 37 when she died, a mother of seven? On May 12, 2003, she left her house in Qaraut Bani Zeid in the West Bank to join a relative, Ramez Arar, 17, who was standing in a yard on a hilltop watching IDF jeeps about two kilometers away. He was shot from a distance and fell. She hurried to his side and was shot, too. In other words, she was shot by soldiers. Five days later, soldiers shot 11-year-old Tamer Arar, killing him. The soldiers marched through the village. Tamer was in a field near his house. He was eating a sandwich. True, children threw stones at the soldiers. But they were not near Tamer. And for that matter, why is it so obvious that it is okay to kill children who throw stones? The children who threw the stones apparently ran away. A boy eating a sandwich remained in place. A month earlier, two other members of the Arar family were killed by soldiers, in the school yard at the entrance to the village: an adult who hurried to help a wounded child (yes, children threw stones at an army jeep that parked right outside the school during recess), and a child who hurried to save the adult. In its day, the IDF Spokesman excused all the killing of various sorts with the explanation that the "force was under attack," but admitted that Rasmiye was not involved in "attacking the force." The villagers said that a new unit was in their village, "trying to provoke." Months later, an IDF commander revealed to Haaretz that steps were taken against soldiers in that unit after it turned out they behaved improperly. Quietly, with no publicity and headlines. Mahmoud Abbas was instructed yesterday at the summit not to ask whose hands were bloodied with the blood of the Arar family. Mohammad Dahlan and Jibril Rajoub are expected not to remember nor remind the Israeli commanders who gave the orders to shoot and blow up and shell and kill civilians, of all the orders that killed and wounded thousands of Palestinians civilians, in the last four years, in the first intifada, in Lebanon, in Qibiyeh. The Palestinian people are not allowed to ask their leaders why soldiers of the occupation who killed civilians, and their officers, are not arrested and put on trial. That's the upside down method: occupy them, their land, their natural resources, take over their lives and judge them as criminals when they resist us - when they kill either civilians or soldiers. We admit we killed civilians, but the "war" apparently not only justifies our cruelty, it erases it. On the other hand, the war - in other words, the occupation, in other words, the war for the preservation of the loot from the 1967 war: the settlements - does not justify or even explain their cruelty in our eyes. If the Palestinians had warplanes and tanks so their killing was sterile, they would prefer to use those. And then, even if they killed Jewish civilians, they would not be called murderers with blood on their hands but enemy soldiers. And when caught they would be considered prisoners of war. If the policy makers of the Olso Accords really were thinking about peace the way they are said to have been, they would have freed all those prisoners. But then, like now: those who speak about gestures and then only free Marwan Barghouti's son, even if it was at Abbas' request, continue to operate with the old diskette of the colonialist who throws candy to the natives."

14 Thais found living in goose pens in Israel,

"Fourteen Thai migrant workers were found on Tuesday morning living in pens used for geese in central Israel. Israeli immigration police raided a small farm in Ben Zakai, near the town of Yavne, after it received reports about conditions at the farm. According to Israeli media, there was sewage flowing under the pens. The “roof” of the pens was made of blankets. It is winter now in Israel, and at night the temperature falls to 10 degrees Celsius. The names of the Thai citizens and their details were not disclosed. All of the workers came to Israel with legal work permits, but left their employers for various reasons. According to Israeli law, once a foreign worker leaves his designated employer, he automatically becomes an illegal alien. Often new employers exploit such workers. If they protest, the employer can threaten to call the police, which will deport them back to Thailand. All Thai workers have to pay a commission of around Bt120,000 to Thai employment agencies that arrange jobs for them in Israel, and for this they take out loans before they leave Thailand. Very few want to go back to Thailand unless they have earned enough money to pay back the loan. “The conditions at the site were under basic human standards, probably due to the fact there was no one that would complain,” David Mondani, commander of the immigration police in central Israel, told Yedioth Ahronoth’s website. “We will charge the owner who employed the workers illegally. In addition to this we will work with the Ministry of Labour and Welfare in order to charge him for not providing his workers with elementary living conditions. Even animals would not want to live like this.” The workers were moved yesterday to a detention centre after which they will be deported to Thailand. The police were trying to locate the employer for investigation. In two cases last year a total of 20 illegal Thai workers were found living under piles of timber."

"Even before he officially became the Democratic National Committee’s new chairman, Howard Dean was a source of contention. Questions about Dean’s support for Israel, which first made headlines during his run for the Democratic
presidential nomination last year, resurfaced just before he was elected Feb. 12. as the new leader of the Democratic Party, and have been exacerbated by advertisements from the Republican Jewish Coalition. The criticism was expected. Some Democrats had worried that Dean would be a lightning rod for Republican attacks. But at a time when Democrats are trying to shore up their standing among Jewish voters, the presence of a national chairman whose support for the Jewish state is questionable could be a stumbling block. “It certainly doesn’t help,” one Jewish Democratic operative said. “He suffers from the same bad perception. The same way the party got tainted, he got tainted.” Dean, a former Vermont governor, was the subject of an e-mail smear campaign during the Democratic primaries last year after he made several off-the-cuff remarks suggesting the United States should take a more “even-handed” approach to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. The term is often understood in the Jewish community as a code word for being less supportive of Israel. Dean was criticized at the time by other Democratic presidential candidates, including U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) and other party leaders. Now those quotes have resurfaced in RJC ads that appeared this week in Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper, and in Jewish newspapers across the country. The ads feature Lieberman saying Dean’s comments “break a 50-year record in which presidents, Republican and Democrat, members of Congress of both parties have supported our relationship with Israel based on shared values.” Jay Footlik, the Jewish liaison for Sen. John Kerry’s presidential campaign last year, also is quoted suggesting that centrist Jewish Democrats would be turned off by Dean as party chairman. But now Lieberman said the ads don’t tell the full
story. “Gov. Dean responded to me and others by calling his comments a mistake,” Lieberman told JTA in a statement Tuesday. “I’m confident that as party chairman, Howard will uphold the Democratic Party’s historic commitment to support and strengthen our democratic ally Israel.” The ads are being criticized by the Anti-Defamation League, in part because they feature an image of several men covered in white sheets with explosive vests, fawning over a young boy dressed to emulate a suicide bomber. Democrats said the picture was too much, but the RJC’s executive director, Matt Brooks, defended it. “I think we are all outraged by the photo, but unfortunately, that’s the reality of the world today,” Brooks said. “When he says it’s not our place to take sides, what he is saying is Israel should be forced to negotiate under the threat of terror" ... Bernice Manocherian, and its executive director, Howard Kohr. “We are confident that as chair of the Democratic Party, Governor Dean will carry on the party’s deep and abiding commitment to a strong and unshakable relationship between the United States and Israel.” Dean did receive some support from the Jewish community during his presidential campaign. His chief Jewish liaison was Steve Grossman, a former president of AIPAC and himself a former chairman of the DNC. He also often cited the fact that his wife, Judith Steinberg, is Jewish, and that his children have chosen to practice Judaism. Dean participated in Chanukah celebrations with staffers on the campaign trail in New Hampshire, even reciting Hebrew blessings over the menorah. GOP Ads Try To Tie Dean To Terrorism,

"A Jewish Republican group greeted Howard Dean's election to chair the Democratic National Committee this week with an ad campaign seeking to depict him as a supporter of terrorism. The group, the Republican Jewish Coalition, placed full-page advertisements in the Washington newspaper Roll Call and in Jewish weeklies around the country, featuring a large picture of Hamas members decked out in costumes resembling suicide bombers. Above the photo, referring to a long-recanted September 2003 quote from Dean, is the statement: "DNC Chairman Howard Dean Says, 'It's not our place to take sides.'" Beneath the photograph, the ad features 2003 quotes from Democrats, including Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who criticize Dean's remark. At the time of the original flap, Dean responded to critics by stating that he meant America needed a president who would be seen as an honest broker by both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as Bill Clinton had been, and not that he opposed America's alliance with Israel. Jewish Democrats replied to this week's Republican ad with a catalog of other Dean statements from before and after the 2003 quote, in which the former Vermont governor repeatedly endorsed America's special relationship with Israel and called for tough action against Islamic terrorism and regimes that support it ... Former DNC chairman Steve Grossman, a onetime president of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, who chaired Dean's unsuccessful presidential bid, said that Dean's 2003 language stemmed from the rookie candidate's inexperience in foreign affairs. He said the Jewish Republicans were "dredging up language long since clarified" in hopes of "driving a wedge" between Dean and Jewish pro-Israel donors. Dean supporters frequently noted during the campaign that the former governor is married to a Jewish woman and that their two daughters are being raised as Jews. Grossman likened the attack on Dean to a campaign launched 15 years ago against the late Ron Brown, when he was elected DNC chair. "It didn't work then, and it won't work now," Grossman said. "Five federal government officials, including three from the CIA, have removed several documents from the archival papers of the late Sen. Henry M. "Scoop" Jackson housed at the University of Washington. Last week the federal document security team spent three days in the special collections division of the UW Suzzallo-Allen library. The officials, which also included people from the Department of Defense and Department of Energy, combed through 1,200 boxes of material using a five-binder index to find the targeted papers. Carla Rickerson, head of special collections, said the team removed up to 10 documents. She would not disclose the exact number or subject matter of the documents because of the university's privacy policies. Rickerson said the papers, now considered classified, are being held in a secure location on campus until federal authorities declassify them. The majority of the Jackson papers span his years in Congress, the period of 1940 to 1983. A portion are drawn from his pre-congressional years when he worked as a private attorney in Everett and as the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney."

BuzzFlash found this column from the Jewish publication, Forward, about a commentary that appeared in 2003 on the main website that Talon services, the obscure GOPUSA.com. The whole White House front operation is owned by one Bobby Eberle, a Texan of course, with "ties" to the Bush right wing. Did he personally meet with Karl Rove to plan out the Gannon/Guckert attempt to control the media message? Did they know or care that Gannon/Guckert was apparently a male escort for gay Marines? All good questions, too bad that FOX News is so quiet about a sex scandal right in the White House. They'll still too busy talking about that Clinton blow job, we guess. In any case, setting up phony journalists isn't Bobby Eberle's only skill, apparently his publication has an appetite for anti-Semitism too. The following is a verbatim excerpt from the Forward:

A prominent Israeli rabbi has ruled that spitting gum on a pavement or hiding it under a desk is a violation of Halacha or Jewish law. “Gum cannot be thrown where others are liable to be disgusted by it,” said Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, the rabbi of the holy city of Safed. Improperly discarded gum may appear to be hidden, but ”God knows” where it is, Eliyahu said. Swallowing the gum is a better solution, the rabbi said, though he criticised the use of chewing gum in general. “Chewing gum is the practice of lower forms of life. It expresses inner tension and lack of control. People with self-respect do not chew gum except on special occasions because of special circumstances,” he said."

"The killing of Hariri has set the stage for the implementation of plans for US aggression against Syria that have long been nurtured by a group within the US administration that is closely tied to Israel and the right-wing Likud bloc, in particular. Prominent among them is David Wurmser, Vice President Dick Cheney’s adviser on the Middle East. Wurmser played a leading role in the creation of a Pentagon intelligence unit that sought to fabricate a case for linking the Iraqi regime with Al Qaeda in the months leading up to the US invasion. In 1996, Wurmser co-authored a report drafted for incoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, entitled “A Clean Break: a New Strategy for Securing the Realm.” It called for a repudiation of the “land for peace” formula that had served as the basis for Middle East peace negotiations, in favor of a plan to “roll back” regional adversaries. It advocated the overthrow of the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein and recommended Israeli strikes against “Syrian targets in Lebanon” and within Syria itself. The co-authors of the report included Douglas Feith, the current undersecretary for policy at the US Defense Department, and Richard Perle, the former chairman of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board. In 2000, Wurmser helped draft a document entitled “Ending Syria’s Occupation of Lebanon: the US Role?” It called for a confrontation with the regime in Damascus, which it accused of developing “weapons of mass destruction.” Among those signing the document were Feith and Perle, as well as Elliott Abrams, Bush’s chief advisor on the Middle East, who was recently appointed deputy national security advisor. This document urged the use of US military force, claiming that the 1991 Persian Gulf War had proven that Washington “can act to defend its interests and principles without the specter of huge casualties.” It continued: “But this opportunity may not wait, for as weapons-of-mass-destruction capabilities spread, the risks of such action will rapidly grow. If there is to be decisive action, it will have to be sooner rather than later.” If one asks the question, “Who benefits?” the answer is clear. The destabilization of Lebanon, the mobilization of the US-backed opposition to the pro-Syrian government in Beirut, and the vilification of Damascus all serve to advance US and Israeli strategic plans long in the making. It is not just a question of motive, however. Israel has a long history of utilizing assassination as an instrument of state policy. The Israeli regime has not infrequently carried out acts of terror and blamed them on its enemies. Among the more infamous examples was the so-called Lavon Affair, in which the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad organized a covert network inside Egypt which launched a series of bombing attacks in 1953. The targets included US diplomatic facilities, and the attackers left behind phony evidence implicating anti-American Arabs. The aim was to disrupt US ties to Egypt. In its long history of assassinations of Palestinian leaders, many of them carried out in Beirut, the Israeli regime has routinely attempted to implicate rival Palestinian factions. Car bomb killings in Beirut are a regular part of Mossad’s repertoire. In the 1970s and 1980s, when the Israelis invaded Lebanon, such bombings were a fact of daily life, and many of them were attributed to Israel. Among the more recent killings is that of Elie Hobeika, an ex-Lebanese cabinet minister and former Christian warlord, in January 2002. He was killed along with three bodyguards by a remote-controlled car bomb on a Beirut street. Hobeika, who participated in the massacre of Palestinian refugees in the Sabra and Shatilla refugee camps in 1976, had announced just days earlier that he was prepared to testify on the role played by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in the killings. Last June, a Lebanese magistrate indicted five Arabs who were said to be working for Mossad in connection with a plot to assassinate Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. At least one of the defendants testified that Mossad had organized the Hobeika assassination. In May 2002, Mossad carried out the assassination of Mohammed Jihad Jibril, the son of Ahmed Jibril, the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command. Israeli Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer commented cynically at the time, “Not everything that blows up in Beirut has a connection with the State of Israel.” In August 2003, Ali Hassan Saleh, a leader of Hezbollah, was assassinated in Beirut. Israel denied any knowledge of the killing, but it was seen throughout Lebanon as a Mossad operation. Since 2002, Mossad has been headed by Meir Dagan, who formerly commanded the Israeli occupation zone in Lebanon. Sharon reportedly gave Dagan a mandate to revive the traditional methods of Mossad, including assassinations abroad."

The Boston Globe columnist was in town Monday to speak at a Jewish Federation of Peoria event on "The Christian Right, the Christian Left and the Jews." As a conservative journalist, the 46-year-old Jacoby said he's used to bouncing people out of their comfort zones by writing and saying things that upset commonly accepted notions. "I march to the beat of my own drummer, and it hasn't been a problem," said Jacoby, who has been at the Globe for 11 years and was at the Boston Herald for six years before that. The columnist said that his main message to his Peoria audience was that American Jews should appreciate the support that the Christian right offers Israel. "My argument is that American Jews who demonize Christian conservatives make a big mistake," Jacoby said Monday afternoon at the federation's office. "One of the strongest supporters of the Jewish people generally and Israel specifically is found on the right. "By contrast, there is mounting evidence of coolness at best or hostility at worst on what I call the Christian left." That has been seen, Jacoby said, in actions taken by Christian mainline denominations and organizations like the Presbyterian Church USA. That group's General Assembly voted last year to phase out investment in corporations that do business with Israel. While the mainline Christian attitude toward Israel hasn't reached the point of anti-Semitism, Jacoby said, "there is this growing hostility."

All eight varieties of the liquid decongestant for children now bear the Orthodox Union's trademark label -- the initial U inside an O -- making Triaminic the first over-the-counter medicine to be certified as kosher. For observant Jews who eschew foods and beverages with the slightest trace of animal derivatives, the seal means they can ease their children's scratchy throats and stuffy noses without any sense of religious conflict, said Rabbi Eliyahu Safran, the Orthodox Union's senior rabbinical coordinator. But the kosher certification also is expected to appeal to non-Jews, including vegetarians, people who are lactose intolerant and Muslims whose own dietary restrictions, known as halal, are similar to those of Jews. With consumers scrutinizing ingredients more carefully than ever, Safran said, many seek out a kosher label as an additional assurance of quality control." "AN OBSCURE Marxist professor who has spent his entire academic life in Manchester has become the darling of the Washington right wing for his outspoken support of the war in Iraq. Despite his leanings Norman Geras, who writes a blog diary on the internet, has praised President George W Bush and says the invasion of Iraq was necessary to oust the tyrannical regime of Saddam Hussein. His daily jottings have brought him the nickname of “Stormin’ Norm” from the title of his diary, Normblog. The Wall Street Journal has reprinted one of his articles in its online edition and American pundits often cite his words. But the British left has turned on Geras, a veteran of demonstrations against the Vietnam war. He has been denounced as an “imperialist skunk” and a “turncoat” in e-mails to his blog, which has up to 9,000 readers a day. Most mornings Geras, 61, the author of such obscure books as Solidarity in the Conversation of Humankind: The Ungroundable Liberalism of Richard Rorty, sits in the upstairs study of his Edwardian semi in Manchester to type his latest entry. Last week he gave thanks to Bush, quoting an Iraqi who wants to build a statue to the American president as “the symbol of freedom' ... "It's a crisis," says Rabbi Shaul Rosenblatt, the joint UK executive director of Aish HaTorah, one of the Orthodox groups most aggressively campaigning against assimilation. "For every Jew that comes back, I expect 50 are moving away. The strictly Orthodox will remain — those couples I know have an average of seven or eight kids. But the rest — the more liberal and secular branches of Judaism — they will die out." Once Rosenblatt starts to point fingers, it becomes clear how far Anglo-Jewry's branches are divided over a response to assimilation. At his home in north London (his nearby office was destroyed last summer in a suspected anti-semitic arson attack; nobody has been caught), the rabbi blames rising intermarriage squarely on the Reform and Liberal synagogues, which have reinterpreted traditional Orthodox values for the modern world. "Up to 150, 200 years ago, you had no secular Jews," he says. "I don't know when the rot started, but the Enlightenment brought in this concept of humanism, telling Jews they could live secular lives. The floodgates opened. And all these hitherto-Orthodox kids just ran." Today, Rosenblatt sees it as his mission to bring them back home. Aish HaTorah (literally "Fire of the Torah") targets secular 18- to 30-year-old Jewish singles who might otherwise be lost to the faith. Through heavily subsidised holidays to Israel or South Africa, and "cool" social events such as speed-dating nights, it presents a friendly, often sexy face designed to attract Jews who might not meet other Jews. Once the ice is broken, its approachable, usually clean-shaven rabbis will invite newcomers to Friday-night sabbath dinners or lectures on Jewish thought. Ultimately, Aish wants them to lead Orthodox religious lives and find an equally religiously committed spouse. You would not know it from its posters, which are big on images of celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, but Aish is at war with secular life. Those it rescues are known as baalei tshuva ("masters of return" but also, tellingly, "repentant sinners") ... Not all sectors of the community share Aish HaTorah's view that intermarriage is a "crisis". Edgar Bronfman, the president of the World Jewish Congress, condemns the fight against intermarriage as racist and doomed. "The whole concept of Jewish peoplehood, and the lines being pure, begins to sound a little like Nazism, meaning racism," he told the Jewish Chronicle last autumn. "We have a choice. We can make an attempt to double the amount of Jews [by welcoming mixed marriages and encouraging children to be raised Jewish] or we can irritate everybody who's intermarried, and lose them all."

"Prime Minister Tony Blair urged London Mayor Ken Livingstone on Wednesday to apologize for making an offensive remark to a Jewish journalist that compared him to a Nazi concentration camp guard. Blair said he didn't believe Livingstone's comment was meant to be anti-Semitic, or that it should jeopardize his job. But the prime minister urged the mayor to say he was sorry. "A lot of us in politics get angry with journalists from time to time, but in the circumstances, and to the journalist because he was a Jewish journalist, yes, (Livingstone) should apologize. Let's just apologize and move on - that's the sensible thing," Blair said on television. Livingstone made the comments last week when he was approached by Oliver Finegold, a reporter for the Evening Standard newspaper, at a reception. The mayor, an outspoken left-winger, dislikes the paper and its conservative sister paper, the Daily Mail. The Daily Mail had a pro-Nazi editorial line in the 1930s, and Livingstone asked Finegold if he had been a "German war criminal." Finegold replied that he was Jewish. Livingstone told the reporter he was "just like a concentration camp guard. You're just doing it because you're paid to, aren't you?" The conversation was recorded on tape and played before the London Assembly on Monday. The body passed a unanimous motion calling on the mayor to withdraw his remarks. It said that, despite Livingstone's record in fighting racism, his remarks damaged his credibility, offended the Jewish community and probably hurt London's chances of hosting the 2012 Olympics. An inspection team from the International Olympic Committee began a four-day tour Wednesday to assess London's bid for the Games. Earlier this week, the London Assembly, the body that scrutinizes Livingstone's work, said his remark probably had hurt the capital's chances. Livingstone's comment also coincided with the release of a new report showing that the number of anti-Semitic attacks in Britain had risen to record levels in 2004, including physical attacks, name calling, hate mail and the desecration of property, such as the vandalism of synagogues with swastikas. In addition, Prince Harry, 20, third in line to the British throne, caused an uproar in January by attending a costume party in London wearing a swastika armband. The royal family later issued an apology on his behalf."

"Anti-Semitism may seem to be a static, unchanging phenomenon, but in fact the obsessive hatred of Jews has a history that goes back millennia and continues to evolve. Developments since World War II and the Holocaust have been especially fast-paced and portentous. Here are four of the most significant shifts: From Right to Left: For centuries, anti-Semitism was the hallmark of the Right and merely episodic on the Left. To take the ultimate examples of these trends, Stalin's Judeophobia was peripheral to his monstrous project, but Hitler's was central to his. Even a decade ago this pattern still basically held true. But recent years have witnessed a rapid and global realignment, with the mainstream Right increasingly sympathetic to Jews and Israel, and its Left counterpart cooler and more hostile. From Christian to Muslim: Christians developed the abiding tropes of anti-Semitism (such as greediness and ambitions to world domination) and historically Christians killed most Jews. Therefore, Jews regularly fled Christendom for Islamdom. In 1945, this pattern abruptly changed. Christians newly came to terms with Jews, while Muslims adopted both the old Christian themes and murderousness. Today, institutional anti-Semitism is overwhelmingly a Muslim affair. One result has been the steady reverse exodus, with Jews now fleeing Islamdom for Christendom. From religious to secular: What began as a rejection of the Jewish religion evolved over the centuries to a bias against the supposed Jewish race (thus, our continued use of the nonsensical term, anti-Semitism) and lately has evolved into anti-Zionism, or hatred of the Jewish state. An astonishing 2003 poll in which Europeans found Israel to be the leading threat to world peace indicates the depth of this new sentiment. The conflation of anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism: Jews and Americans, Israel and the United States – they have merged in the minds of many around the world, so that one prejudice routinely implies the other one too. The two hatreds also share a basic feature: neither is susceptible to rational argument, so each is better understood as the symptom of a psychological disorder than of some arcane political logic."

Six websites fomenting hatred and encouraging suicide bombing are pulled,

"Canadian Internet providers are diligent about weeding out hate sites but the organizations behind them find other means to get their hate-mongering online, a spokesman for the Simon Wiesenthal Centre said Monday. Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Toronto-based centre said six sites that fomented hatred against Jews or advocated terrorism or suicide-bombing have been pulled by the host in Kelowna, B.C. The Wiesenthal centre regularly monitors websites and advises servers about ones that appear to breach Canada's hate or anti-terrorist legislation. Cooper acknowledged it was unusual to find six sites all on a hosting company based in Kelowna. "It's particularly unusual because Canadian Internet providers have done perhaps . . . the best job in the last six or seven years of self-policing," he said. "We always hold up the Canadian industry as an example to how companies around the globe can put in place their own voluntary rules." The six sites taken down included one that promoted and celebrated suicide bombers and another that denigrated the Jewish religion. Cooper acknowledged that policing the web for hatred is a never-ending task. "As the Internet has no borders, we are finding more and more complex approaches by those who are supporting terrorists in order to get their websites . . . out." He said that is not the fault of the Canadian companies, who cannot possibly monitor regularly the vast array of sites. "What it really means is this is a wakeup call, not only to the companies who cannot expect to become expert on hate groups and terrorist organizations. They really have to be in the mode of responding as quickly as this particular company did." Randall Robinson, the web services manager with RackForce Hosting Inc. in Kelowna, said his company had been working with the RCMP already regarding the hate sites provider. He declined to give the name of the provider but explained that his company is not responsible and had no knowledge of the hate sites until they were pointed out. "We're a distribution outlet, there are other people, middlemen, who sell the site service," said Robinson. "We provide a hosting business. We have no contract with the end user." Robinson said his company works with the RCMP's integrated technical crime unit and Staff Sgt. Dan Howard, who was not available Monday to comment. RackForce has about 80,000 websites on its server. "It's not possible to go through all those sites," Robinson said. "It's impossible to police that. Even if we did, who makes the decision on what should or should not be on that site?" Robinson confirmed what Cooper said - that these sites can be pulled and appear elsewhere not long after. "The vast majority of these sites are hosted by U.S. companies," he said. Robinson doesn't know if the provider was aware of the content of the six sites that RackForce hosted. "This hosting provider may have known that these were terrorists sites. We unplugged him. We didn't want his business." Cooper doesn't know why the six sites all appeared on a Kelowna-based server. "It's very difficult to say why did they come after a web server in B.C. Those who are trying to promote terrorism are going to look far and wide for the kind of addresses that one would assume is very far from any kind of confrontation. "We just have to follow the rats wherever the cheese leads and in this particular case it led to British Columbia."

"Western governments and moderate Muslim clerics have said this brand of faith, which rules all aspects of life, was fomenting extremism." Reuters simply could not help itself. It was compelled to throw in that tidbit about Muslim fanaticism. Naturally, the Palestinian Adas is connected to an al-Qaeda-like organization. "He had earlier appeared in a video aired by Al Jazeera claiming responsibility killing Hariri and calling him a Saudi agent.. The tape broadcast by Al Jazeera showed Abu Adas sitting in front of a black flag carrying the name 'Group for Advocacy and Holy War in the Levant'.. He called Hariri a Saudi agent and said the attack was also 'in revenge for the pious martyrs killed by security forces of the Saudi regime' and used a religious term for Saudi Arabia often used by al Qaeda militants fighting Riyadh's U.S.-allied government since 2003." Bingo! Adas used an al-Qaeda word. It should be noted that Rafik al-Hariri, a billionaire philanthropist, probably had more than his share of enemies-including Israel. Back in 2003, as prime minister, al-Hariri said that Israel, "through its aggressive practices," as the Middle East Newsline characterized it at the time, wanted "to create a new situation in the region." His remarks came a few days after Israel bombed Syria, an overt and brazen act of war supported the Bush administration. And then there was the role al-Hariri played in 1996, attempting to get Israel out of Lebanon, going so far as convening a diplomatic mission to seek Syrian, Egyptian and French support to end the Israeli assault. Finally, there is the issue of the Wazzani River, a tributary of the Hasbani that flows into the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee, Israel's biggest body of freshwater. Israel took a "grave view" of Lebanon's plan to pipe water from the river. In fact, they declared their intention to start a war over how much water Lebanon piped from the river, an amount well below a 1995 agreement (Lebanon takes 353 million cubic feet per year from the Wazzani and Hasbani rivers, well below the 1.2 billion cubic feet allowed in the agreement). Israel is estimated to use 5.3 billion cubic feet of water per year from the two rivers. "No matter where else you look, no one else had anything to gain except Israel and the U.S. because [al-Hariri's] death could cause some possible upset in Lebanese politics and life," writes Sam Hamod. "Most Middle East experts in the Arab and Muslim worlds believe Israeli hands were at work in the killing of former Prime Minister of Lebanon" ... As for the "Group for Advocacy and Holy War in the Levant" with hinted Palestinian and al-Qaeda connections, consider the following: In late 2002, "Palestinian security forces arrested a group of Palestinians for collaborating with Israel and posing as operatives of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terrorist network," reported the AFP. "There are certain elements who were instructed by the Mossad to form a cell under the name of Al Qaeda in the Gaza Strip in order to justify the assault and the military campaigns of the Israeli occupation army against Gaza," Abed Rabbo, Palestinian Information Minister, told Reuters."

France probes Israeli firms on arms to Ivory Coast,

"The French government has demanded that Israel provide information on companies selling arms to the Ivory Coast, where a civil war is now raging. The demand, which indirectly places responsibility on Israeli companies for the death of French soldiers on a peace-keeping mission, was apparently raised by the French Embassy's military attach? [sic] or a representative of its intelligence agencies in talks with Defense Ministry officials. A source in the Defense Ministry confirmed receipt of the demand, but refused to discuss its content, which was apparently conveyed to Yehiel Horev, the Defense Ministry's chief of security. The French Embassy refused to comment on the matter. About three months ago, as reported in Haaretz, the French government asked the Foreign and Defense ministries to stop exporting weapons from Israel to the Ivory Coast. Defense Ministry director general Amos Yaron subsequently ordered a freeze on the supply of weapons to the Ivory Coast by Israeli companies. According to the Haaretz report, among the Israeli companies involved in weapons sales to the Ivory Coast were Aeronautics Defense Systems, which sold drones and sent personnel to maintain them. Arms dealer Moshe Rothschild sold aircraft, parts and ammunition purchased in Eastern Europe; and businessman Hezi Betzalel sold surveillance systems manufactured by the Israeli company, Verint Systems. The French say the soldiers were killed when drones and surveillance systems assisted the Ivory Coast air force in attacking a base where they were stationed. The Ivory Coast government said the attack had been directed at rebel forces. In a reprisal, however, the French air force destroyed the Ivory Coast aircraft, hit the drones and destroyed the intelligence center operated by the Israeli systems."

That's the controversy behind Timothy Findley's The Trials of Ezra Pound, which makes its local debut Friday in a Shipping Dock Theatre production. The play takes place simultaneously in a Washington, D.C., courtroom and Pound's fevered mind, requiring some deftness from the cast. The stakes are especially high for this show, since lead actor Doug Bradburd was sidelined after recent abdominal surgery. At the eleventh hour, local actor Fred Nuernberg agreed to play Pound on demand. "Fred has already mastered the role," said director Barbara Biddy. "This will come together." Recovering at his Brighton home, Bradburd was still rehearsing the scenes in his imagination. "It's a question of how to balance Pound's vituperative language and his pathos," he said. "I don't doubt his literary greatness, even if it's hard to reconcile with his anti-Semitism. I look forward to seeing this play — in the audience."

"The head of the leading Jewish organization in France said Saturday that France's foreign policy, like the "grandiose" welcomes once reserved for Yasser Arafat, is not always compatible with its fight against anti-Semitism. Roger Cukierman, president of CRIF, the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France, said he felt a certain "malaise" over the treatment given Arafat, the Palestinian leader who died in France in November, and the decision to allow broadcasts by the TV station of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group. The station was later banned. Such actions reveal "an incompatibility between the foreign policy of France and the internal policy to fight against anti-Semitism," Cukierman said. The head of CRIF, an umbrella organization for Jewish groups, made the remarks at his organization's annual dinner, attended by Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. Raffarin vowed France's "unrelenting" determination to fight anti-Semitism, listing efforts put in place to banish it. "The government's will has been expressed, is being expressed and will always be expressed in the firmest way," Raffarin told the gathering. Every French citizen "bears the scars" of anti-Semitic attacks, he said. He listed a series of measures France has taken since 2002, when anti-Semitic acts began increasing proportionally with rising tensions in the Middle East. France is home to western Europe's largest Jewish and Muslim communities and both have suffered threats, attacks and slander. However, Cukierman deplored that the measures have not eradicated anti-Semitic acts. While saluting the "real effort" of police, he said that the justice system "sometimes gives the sense that it does not appreciate the gravity of the anti-Semitic phenomenon." France has put in place a battery of measures to fight anti-Semitism, including guarding Jewish establishments, instructing prosecutors to severely punish anti-Semitic acts and publishing a book to educate students on anti-Semitism."

"An Israeli military court has ordered the release of the army commander responsible for shooting to death a young Palestinian girl at point-blank range in the Gaza Strip last year, according to the Israeli press. Thirteen-year-old Iman al-Hams's body was found riddled with over 17 bullets near an army post in the southern Gaza strip refugee camp of Rafah last October. The accused commander, identified only as Captain R, was released on Sunday after being confined to an army base for two months.Captain R shot the girl twice in the head, and "confirmed the kill" by emptying his magazine into her limp body. He then said he would have killed her "even if she was three-years-old".

"He was just 11 years old when Nazis invaded his home country of Poland.  Four years later, he had survived ten concentration camps.  Now, Henry Golde is sharing his story with Eau Claire students. "There were so many times that I should have been dead, time and time over, and I survived," says Golde. He's the only member of his family who survived.  Golde wants to leave students at South Middle School a powerful message.  He says, "Hate is nothing and love is everything." It's a lesson students say they're learning. "This message is a pretty powerful one when you think about all of what this guy and millions of other people have gone through all of this horrible stuff," says eighth-grader Nick Scherrer.  Golde has been in the United States for more than 50 years and now lives in Appleton. He's written a book about his experience, it's called Ragdolls."

Rabbi Nosson Scherman, ArtScroll's general editor who led the project, now turns to an English translation of the Jerusalem Talmud, projected as a 47-volume work that will take 10 years. "In a shot across the bow of Columbia University, a group of Jewish Columbia alumni are warning the university that it had better remedy the anti-Israel atmosphere in its Middle East studies department – or pay a price. A pair of Columbia alumni launched a letter-writing campaign last week threatening to withhold future financial support from the university until "free speech" is restored to its classrooms. The campaign was prompted in large part by screenings of a controversial video called Columbia Unbecoming, which details student complaints about bias and intimidation against pro-Israel students by professors in Columbia's Department of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC). In the professionally produced video, students recount how professors used their positions to promote anti-Israel activism, discourage free intellectual discourse on the Israeli-Arab conflict and vilify pro-Israel students. "The film highlights how MEALAC professors have disregarded the very foundation of academia – objective teaching and research – and inflamed the classroom with personal politics and anti-Israel hate," wrote Yael Lerman Mazar, the former MEALAC major and Columbia alumna behind the letter-writing campaign. "This is not the Columbia my husband and I take pride in and not the Columbia we intend to support." Mazar's letter, which was sent to Columbia president Lee Bollinger on February 10, demands that Bollinger reconstitute a committee charged with investigating the accusations of professorial intimidation and harassment. Several committee members were signatories to a petition urging the university to divest from Israeli companies, and Mazar says they should be replaced with "unbiased" faculty members. Mazar told The Jerusalem Post she penned her letter after seeing Columbia Unbecoming at Anti-Defamation League headquarters in New York on February 8. The recent proliferation of public screenings of the film, which until recently had been shown only selectively, is adding fuel to the fire that threatens to tarnish Columbia's reputation in the Jewish community ... Eran said cooperation could involve exchanges of views and intelligence, Israeli participation in NATO exercises and joint work on defence research and development. “In the fight against terror, it could include a discussion of certain technological aspects, where because of our situation we have something of an expertise,” said Eran. Beyond diplomatic contacts, Israel has little in the way of formal ties with NATO at the moment. Arab concern: Sources familiar with the debate say backers of closer NATO ties with Israel include the United States, Britain and a number of central and east European states. France, with close Arab ties, is among those seen as less enthusiastic. The move may prompt concern among Israel’s neighbours but NATO stresses that it does not see any cooperation harming the closer ties it is also seeking with six Arab states - Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. "Two ongoing FBI investigations could cause serious problems for Israel. One concerns Larry Franklin, an Iranian analyst who worked at the Pentagon under neocon/Zionist Douglas Feith, under secretary of defense for policy. According to press reports, Franklin—who cooperated with the FBI, initially at least—is suspected of having passed to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) a classified National Security Presidential Directive (NSPD) on Iran. AIPAC, Israel’s principal American lobby, then passed the NSPD to Israel, news accounts say. AIPAC has been under FBI investigation for at least two years for being a conduit for U.S. intelligence to Israel. In fact, according to a Nov. 2 Associated Press report, National Security Advisor and Secretary of State-designate Condoleezza Rice was briefed about the investigation “shortly” after the Bush administration took office, which means the investigation has been under way for close to four years, not two. Time magazine reported that Franklin made a series of FBI-scripted and -monitored telephone calls to get possible evidence on others, including allies of Ahmad Chalabi, “a favorite of the Pentagon neoconservatives”—the two most prominent of whom are Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and Feith. Chalabi, the exiled Iraqi who provided much of the disinformation used by Pentagon neocons to promote the U.S. war on Iraq, is thought to have informed Tehran that the U.S. had broken Iran’s diplomatic code. Not only has Chalabi lost Washington’s support because of his role in the matter, but whoever provided that information to Chalabi is guilty of serious espionage. Moreover, according to an independent expert on Israeli espionage who was interviewed by the FBI in June and in several follow-up interviews, the investigators’ questioning was broad and extremely detailed. It appears that the various FBI investigations may have become one overlapping investigation centered on AIPAC and its neocon fellow travelers. In mid-September, however, the press went silent on Franklin. London’s Financial Times wrote that the White House had ordered the leaker to stop—which the White House denied. But coverage resumed temporarily, with the New York Sun story that Franklin had fired his court-appointed attorney. The Los Angeles Times reported on Oct. 6 that Franklin had hired to represent him high-priced Washington, DC attorney Plato Cacheris, who had earlier defended CIA spies Adrich Ames and Robert Hanssen. Franklin supposedly has rejected as “too onerous” a proposed plea agreement. Since the Pollard case, at least six sealed indictments have been issued against individuals alleging espionage on Israel’s behalf. In the Rozen and Vest version of the FBI investigation, the AIPAC and Franklin probes had nothing to do with Chalabi and the Iran-related leaks. Rather, according to Michael Rubin, a former desk officer in Feith’s notorious Office of Special Plans, the investigators were going after Jews. Several questions come to mind: Why did Franklin stop cooperating with the FBI? Who pays the high-priced Cocheris’ fees? What if not the FBI but AIPAC and/or the neocons leaked the investigators’ story? They might reason that they stand a better chance that way of avoiding prosecution. Not only Israel, but many Americans are waiting to see what happens."

New public art explores race, gender, stereotypes,

"At a time when politically incorrect statements have embroiled figures including the president of Harvard and a University of Colorado department chairman, Denver is about to unveil a prominent, publicly financed sculpture that probes race, gender and stereotypes in three-dimensional force. Near the busy City Park golf clubhouse today, a crane will lift into place "Meeting of Minds," featuring two giant steel heads - that of a large African-American female in the foreground and that of a diminished white male in the background. According to the city's public art chief, the piece is meant to symbolize the "different approaches men and women take to building their belief systems." "While males have the tendency to be more rigid in their approach, the female approach tends to be more organic. 'Meeting of Minds' reflects the receding 'rigid' approach, with the 'organic' approach taking prominence," said John Grant, Public Art Program director. Commissioned with $52,000 in city funds, Douglas Kornfeld's sculpture intentionally looks out over a prominent crossroads of the races: The African- American woman looks north toward neighborhoods with the most black residents in Denver; she and her "female" way of thinking appear triumphant over the dying white male. In a further cultural mash-up, City Park was one of the first public courses to welcome black players, yet golf remains the icon of white country-club privilege. If that has not raised enough questions, Kornfeld has also crammed each of the figures' "brains" with hundreds of the international gender symbols that delineate men's and women's bathrooms, though some of the figures are distorted to highlight the absurdity of a generic tag for a diverse population. Kornfeld, who grew up near City Park before settling in Massachusetts, does not expect torch-lit marches on his sculpture by angry white men and talk- show hosts with megaphones. He is not, he says, a flame-throwing artist, and the reaction to his past work reflects that. But he quickly adds that good public art does raise many questions, some uncomfortable. "If art is totally accepted and doesn't cause any controversy, then I as an artist am not doing my job," said Kornfeld, who will be in Denver today supervising the installation of his piece. "Part of my role is to ask people to think differently." In the kind of irony that enriches art, Kornfeld said he lives "down the street" from Harvard University president Lawrence Summers and is well aware of the trouble Summers has gotten into. Summers startled and angered female academics in mid-January with a speech speculating that innate gender differences may keep women from consistently reaching as high as men in math and science. Words such as "organic" and "rigid," sweet and harmless in one context, can clink like handcuffs in another ... "You'll have a large percentage of people who will look at it and say, 'That's pretty.' And they won't look for deeper meaning," [Tamara Gillis] said. "Then you'll have a smaller percentage of people who look for an agenda and want to read into it the symbolism of race and gender, the ones who are itching for a fight because it's public money" ... "Good public art does provoke discussion - not fights, but debate and discussion," she said ... Kornfeld frequently uses the gender symbols to explore diversity, including a mosaic on the wall of RTD's Civic Center underground bus station. Kornfeld has numerous public commissions, from Maine to Washington state ... Kornfeld's piece may not be as controversial as a current New York photography exhibit on white privilege, "White: Whiteness and Race in Contemporary Art," at the International Center of Photography. But the curator of that show said any sculptor professing to create an iconic African-American or white image must brace for criticism. Kornfeld, who is white, used an African- American model for the upright head, but just what makes a human feature typical of one race or another is always touchy, curator Maurice Berger said. "Blackness is as varied as whiteness is," Berger said. "It has to be a very sophisticated and rigorous approach." But if you're going to have a dialogue, Berger said, why not have it over art instead of in a more volatile arena such as politics? "Sometimes art is the teaspoon of sugar that makes the medicine go down," he said."

In the U.S., CompuDyne Corp. said this week it recently learned that former investor Hilary Shane faces NASD charges in the United States of violating securities laws in a financing deal the security company did in October 2001 ... Finkelstein and Leonard face similar charges stemming from a PIPE involving Novatel Wireless Inc. in 2001 and with Trikon Technologies Inc. a year later. A powerful Kremlin insider under ex-President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s, Berezovsky lives in exile in London and wants to stir an opposition movement against Putin -- a man Berezovsky says he helped Yeltsin to pick as his successor. In an interview with news Web site gazeta.ru, he said he was confident Ukraine's new leadership would not extradite him to Moscow, where he is wanted for fraud and embezzlement. "There is the Geneva Convention on political refugees. This convention was signed by many countries, including Ukraine," said Berezovsky, who often travels under a fake name. "I officially received refugee status in Britain and have the right to go to any country that signed this convention and be guaranteed that I will not be extradited to a country that does not abide by law," he added ...
