"Psychic Uri Geller today spoke of the “bitter feeling” he experienced after seeing anti-Semitic graffiti daubed outside his British home. The Israeli star who has lived in the village of Sonning, Berkshire, for 20 years, was out walking his dog along a towpath along the river Thames earlier this week when he saw racists had sprayed the word “Jew” on his fence. Geller, a close friend of popstar Michael Jackson, describes himself as a “man of peace” and said the attack left him struggling to guess whether the attack was intended as political or racial. He said: “I went out, I took my dog out for a walk and there it was on my fence in big letters ’Jew’. “There’s no doubt I was targeted because to get to my property, especially that side of the fence is not an easy job to do. “It’s not a good feeling I have never had this before, I have been in other countries and this is the last place I would have expected it ... “My property is immensely guarded, I have cameras and guard dogs, but they are all inward on the property, that’s why I have no footage, because I don’t want to film the towpath.”

"Let us see what has been established. First, I alleged that Goldberg has never read a book about Iraq, about which he keeps fulminating. I expected him at least to lie in response, the way W. did when similarly challenged on his book-reading. I expected Goldberg to say, "That is not true! I have read Phebe Marr's book on modern Iraq from cover to cover and know all about the 1963 failed Baathist coup!" But Goldberg did not respond in this way. I conclude that I was correct, and he has never read a book on this subject. I am saying I do not understand why CNN or NPR would hire someone to talk about Iraq policy who has not read a book on the subject under discussion. Actually, of course, it would be desirable that he had read more than one book. Books are nice. They are rectangular and soft and have information in them. They can even be consumed on airplanes. Goldberg should try one. Goldberg is now saying that he did not challenge my knowledge of the Middle East, but my judgment. I take it he is saying that his judgment is superior to mine. But how would you tell whose judgment is superior? Of course, all this talk of "judgement" is code for "political agreement." ... Poor Jonah can't get anything right when it comes to me. He tries to imply that I don't speak Arabic, citing a comment by As'ad Abukhalil on my recent al-Jazeerah appearance. As`ad praises me for apologizing to al-Jazeerah readers for not speaking Arabic in the bulk of the interview. What he didn't say was that I began by speaking in Arabic and I apologized in Arabic. I said I preferred to speak English because the subject required exactitude. I have given more than one interview in Arabic, including on Radio Sawa Iraq. In this instance I felt it was important to have absolute control of nuance, which can only be had in one's mother tongue. When we were bantering before the show in Arabic, and I explained how I felt to Fuad Ajami and the others, Fuad quipped that my Arabic was better than some (highly westernized) Arab rulers. I know three kinds of Arabic-- Modern Standard, Lebanese dialect and Egyptian dialect. My Arabic is not free of solecisms because I didn't start it until I was an adult, and sometimes something from one of the three slips into the other. But I did live in the Arab world nearly 6 years altogether, and do speak the language. ... I challenged Goldberg to a public debate on the Middle East, since that was the subject on which he attacked me. His response was not, quite frankly, the response of a man to a challenge. He wanted to put on all kinds of pissant conditions on the subject of the debate. It is sort of as though Wyatt Earp challenged a bad guy to a shootout after the outlaw burped rotgut whiskey in his face and called him a wimp. And when Earp challenges the black hat, the guy turns to jelly and says, "O.K., but you can't use that Colt, it has to be little bitty derringers like the one I use to shoot people in the back at night." Let's see, Goldberg's remarks were about the relative virtues of the elections in Iran and Iraq. He declined my challenge, saying he would only debate me on US politics or US foreign policy. In other words, he thinks it is all right to sit up on a perch and snipe at me through his privileged access to the media (given to him why?) on Middle East issues. But he is afraid to debate me publicly on those same issues. I don't understand. If he thinks he knows what he is talking about in print, why wouldn't he risk talking about the same things verbally and in person? I'll tell you why. It is because when writing an op-ed, he can get away with only seeming to grasp the facts, whereas in person he can be busted and shown to be only a poseur ... Goldberg also cites Michael Ledeen saying that the Jan. 30 elections were, too, a model for other Middle Eastern countries, because so many lists were allowed to participate. But there were limiting factors in Iraq, too. One US embassy official said that it wouldn't be possible for Iraq to have a prime minister of whom the US disapproved. Judith Miller just last week on Hardball let slip that the US is offering people cabinet posts in the new Iraqi government. And where exactly did all that money come from for Iyad Allawi's (an old-time Baathist and then CIA asset) campaign? Goldberg waxes indignant that I associated him with the sabre rattling toward Iran, but then cites Ledeen, the 21st century's most strident warmonger! ... Goldberg is just a dime a dozen pundit. Cranky rich people hire sharp-tongued and relatively uninformed young people all the time and put them on the mass media to badmouth the poor, spread bigotry, exalt mindless militarism, promote anti-intellectualism, and ensure generally that rightwing views come to predominate even among people who are harmed by such policies. One of their jobs is to marginalize progressives by smearing them as unreliable. The thing that really annoyed me about Goldberg's sniping was it reminded me of how our country got into this mess in Iraq. It was because a lot of ignorant but very powerful and visible people told the American people things that were not true. In some instances I believe that they lied. In other instances, they were simply too ignorant of the facts to know when an argument put forward about, say, Iraq, was ridiculous. For instance, it was constantly said that Iraqis were "secular."

Filmmaker Polanski wins right to testify by video in British libel case,

"Filmmaker Roman Polanski has won the right to give evidence by video link in a British court, in a libel case he has brought against against US magazine Vanity Fair. Britain's top legal authority, the Law Lords, ruled on Thursday that Polanski could give testimony by video, thereby sparing him the risk of being extradited from a London courtroom to the United States. Polanksi, 71, has lived in France since fleeing the United States in 1978 where he is wanted for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. Despite being nominated for several Oscar awards, most recently for directing "The Pianist" in 2003, the Polish-born director has not returned to the United States since, and continues to fear arrest over the affair. He sued Vanity Fair over a 2002 article which accused him of seducing a woman on the way back from the funeral of his actress wife Sharon Tate, who was brutally murdered in 1969. Polanski took the case to the Law Lords after the Court of Appeal ruled last year that he could not give evidence via video link but would have to appear in person. The top British court ruled that despite Polanski's "fugitive status" he was entitled to the assistance of the court and protection of his civil rights. Conde Nast, the publisher of Vanity Fair, said the ruling would not affect the substance of the case, and warned it would "vigorously defend" its imprint, a society and people-driven monthly. It also said the trial would likely be heard in several months' time and estimated the cost of Polanski's video link from Paris, during a five- to six-day trial, at 30,000 pounds (56,000 dollars, 44,000 euros)."

"EXPELLED Israeli diplomat Amir Lati had a relationship with a woman who worked for Australia's Defence Department. The latest development has thrown up yet another explanation as to why the diplomat may have been ordered to leave Australia in December. It follows earlier allegations that Mr Lati was asked to leave over personal behaviour that "unnerved women" or as a result of involvement in espionage. Initially it was also thought Mr Lati's expulsion may have been linked to last year's New Zealand passport fraud scandal but this has been ruled out. Mr Lati, in his early 30s, lived in a rented flat in a 1970s-style apartment block in Canberra's fashionable suburb of Kingston. He was known to drink at the B-Bar in Kennedy Street, though not heavily, and regularly went with embassy staff for a pizza at La Capanna, a haunt that is also popular with politicians. If he were a spy, he
certainly did not stand out from the crowd, though some have described him as an extrovert. Staff at Kingston's local bars and restaurants were generally surprised to find a spy may have been in their midst. One staffer at La Capanna said she recalled meeting Mr Lati and commented on the name on his credit card because of its resemblance to latte. Israeli media reports initially claimed the expulsion, first reported last week, came after Mr Lati visited two spies who were sentenced last year to six months' jail in New Zealand for passport fraud. Uriel Zoshe Kelman, 31, and Eli Cara, 50, were sentenced to six months in prison after they pleaded guilty to the passport charge."

"The Israeli Foreign Ministry has rejected as "terribly exaggerated" an Israeli newspaper article claiming the newly appointed consul in Canberra, Arie Scher, had to leave Brazil five years ago after being implicated in a sex scandal. Mr Scher has been flagged as the replacement for Amir Laty, the former Israeli consul to Australia who was expelled amid extreme secrecy from Australia about a month ago. The Federal Government has refused to explain why Mr Laty, who was only 18 months into his posting, was asked to leave under the threat of deportation. Claims have emerged that Mr Laty's expulsion was related to espionage, as well as personal "indiscretions". But an Israeli Foreign Ministry investigation has reportedly cleared him of inappropriate behaviour. Mr Scher's choice as Mr Laty's replacement is certain to spark controversy. According to a report in the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv, Mr Scher abandoned his posting in Brazil five years ago after being implicated in a sex scandal and before police were able to question him. Israel and Brazil do not have an extradition treaty but the Brazilian Government asked the Israeli Government to take proceedings against Mr Scher. Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Relations delivered a formal request to Israel's Foreign Ministry stating that Rio de Janeiro's 31st criminal precinct had a criminal case pending against Mr Scher. It is understood the case is still open. The request was sent to Brazil's embassy in Tel Aviv on October 2001 and later forwarded to the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Ma'ariv reported that Israel's Civil Service Commission had investigated the allegations upon his return and found that Mr Scher had behaved inappropriately for a diplomat but was not guilty of criminal behaviour. It banned him from foreign diplomatic missions for five years."

"Israeli Amir Laty was told to leave Australia last month, but just why is
hard to pin down, reports Cynthia Banham. At first blush the secretive
expulsion of an Israeli diplomat from Canberra a month ago had all the
makings of a James Bond movie - there were claims of espionage, liaisons
with women, and plenty of intrigue. But as the real story behind the
banishment of Amir Laty slowly unfolds, it is unclear whether what took
place was an audacious attempt by a foreign agent to breach high-level
Australian intelligence, or more a case of a mid-range diplomat who fancied
himself a 007-come-Casanova, but in the end got it all wrong. It all began
when Laty, aged in his early 30s, was quietly told a few weeks ago to leave
Australia. There wasn't a murmur from the Federal Government at the time,
and when news of his expulsion broke late last Friday night, via a report in
the Israeli newspaper, Ma'ariv, the Government refused to answer any
questions about his departure. It wouldn't even confirm he had left the
country. The Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, said "this is an issue that
we've chosen not to comment on" ... Shortly after Laty left the country, leaving friends baffled by his departure. When the Federal Opposition asked the Department of Foreign Affairs for an explanation on why Laty was banished, it was told to ask ASIO, Australia's domestic spy agency. That the agency was involved confirmed speculation the expulsion was related to national security. Eventually, official sources
told the Herald espionage was part of the reason Laty was kicked out. Reports subsequently emerged that Laty might have tried to penetrate "highly
sensitive Australian intelligence". The original theory, that because Laty
had visited New Zealand last year, there must have been some connection to
the jailing in that country of two alleged Mossad agents for passport fraud,
began to look doubtful. The imprisonment of Uriel Zoshe Kelman and Eli
Cara - the latter had connections to Australia and rented a house in
Turramurra - sparked a diplomatic scandal in New Zealand. The Prime
Minister, Helen Clark, demanded an apology from the Israeli Government.
Clark, unlike her Australian counterpart, refused to brush the affair under
the carpet, and relations between Israel and New Zealand remain strained.
Suggestions that Laty's indiscretions or "out of hours activities," as one
official put it, have also emerged. A number of women who met Laty on
Canberra's social circuit had seen the news of his departure, and the penny
had dropped that this was the same man who had unsettled them with his
unwanted attentions and persistent phone calls. The women had thought at the
time his behaviour might have just come down to cultural difference - but
they were unnerved nevertheless. Then a report emerged yesterday that Laty
had a relationship in Canberra with a woman who worked for the Defence
Department. Whatever the real reason behind Laty's departure, the
controversy dogging the Israeli embassy in Canberra is not about to go away.
This is particularly so now it has emerged Laty's replacement could be Arie
Scher, a former diplomat to Brazil who left hurriedly after becoming
embroiled in a sex scandal."

Mall kiosk probe ends in Israelis' deportation,

"Federal authorities have deported an Israeli man and his employees after busting a scheme in which officials said he staffed Nebraska shopping mall kiosks with illegal "tourist" workers. Ohad Cohen, 27, also forfeited $35,325 that was in a backpack he threw off while being chased by immigration agents.
The illegal employment scheme was part of a broader investigation involving kiosks in the Midwest, officials said Monday. Michael Wardy of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Omaha said Cohen helped recruit Israelis to come to the United States on tourist visas. They would sell video games, beauty products and other items at the kiosks. Cohen would pay their rent and take care of other arrangements during their stay. The employees would work on commission. "These aren't the guys that come up through the desert, risking their lives to get here," Wardy said. "These are middle-class people." Cohen pleaded guilty last month in federal court. As part of a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office, Cohen agreed to formal deportation as an aggravated felon. Cohen had entered the United States multiple times during 2004 on a visitor's visa. In Nebraska, agents observed him supervising employees and transporting goods and cash as he managed kiosks that sold merchandise in Omaha's Oak View Mall and Lincoln's Gateway Westfield Mall. Nine Israeli citizens who were working illegally at the Nebraska kiosks, four of them for Cohen, also were arrested and returned to their country, immigration officials said. Agents in other parts of the Midwest disrupted similar schemes in December. In Minnesota, a joint investigation by the FBI and immigration officials led to the arrest of 15 Israelis. Agents seized electronic game units loaded with illegal copies of games copyrighted by such companies as Nintendo of America. In Grand Forks, N.D., immigration agents arrested three Israeli employees at a mall kiosk."

"With the recent marking of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration camps, CBC Newsworld's The Passionate Eye takes a look at how movies have portrayed the Holocaust in Imaginary Witness, a documentary airing Sunday night. Narrated by actor Gene Hackman, the film includes interviews with Steven Spielberg (Schindler's List), Sidney Lumet and Rod Steiger (The Pawnbroker). Film clips are also included from Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator, Judgment at Nuremberg, The Diary of Anne Frank and Sophie's Choice. One of the issues examined is why Hollywood, although primarily run by Jewish studio bosses, ignored the Nazi persecution of Jews in the years immediately after the Second World War. It took independent filmmakers to broach the subject, and then only decades after the war. Also debated is the moral question about turning the Holocaust into cinematic art. Imaginary Witness is an American Movie Classics production in association with the BBC."

Jewish Federation starts philanthropic group,

"The Jewish Federation of St. Louis recently launched The Cardozo Society, a
philanthropic group made up of Jewish attorneys, judges and law students who
live or work in the St. Louis area. The Cardozo Society was established to strengthen relationships among people in the legal profession through education and leadership, while at the same time working to enhance the quality of life for Jewish people. The society's philanthropic role will be contributing funds to the Jewish Federation's annual campaign. The annual campaign helps fund 26 local, 20 national and three international agencies, programs and services. These
agencies and services help feed the hungry, offer care for the young and old,
fight anti-Semitism, promote Jewish culture and heritage and supports Jews in
Israel and other places around the world. The Cardozo Society is modeled after the Jewish Federation's Maimonides Society, which is made up of Jewish doctors. The group for doctors was established about a decade ago, said Jean Millner, development associate for the Jewish Federation of St. Louis. "Local Jewish attorneys had approached us over the years, asking if there could be a group for attorneys," Millner said.With the addition of a group for attorneys, the federation is providing a forum for legal issues from a Jewish perspective. It hopes also to promote a
tradition of giving back to the Jewish community."

"The Policy of Injuries In order to understand the full extent of the Israeli crimes that are being committed in the process of suppressing the Palestinian uprising it is necessary to examine also the injuries, and not only the rising number of fatalities ... More than 7000 Palestinians are reported injured so far. Several Palestinian medical sources report that an alarming number of them are injured in the head or legs (knees), with carefully aimed shots, and, increasingly, live ammunition. Many will not recover, or will be disabled for life. This pattern of injuries cannot be accidental. Dan Ephron, Boston Globe correspondent in Jerusalem reported on the findings of the Physicians for Human Rights delegation: "American doctors who examined Israel's use of force in the West Bank and Gaza Strip have concluded that Israeli soldiers appeared to be deliberately targeting the heads and legs of Palestinian protestors, even in non-life-threatening situations." Medical School doctors in the delegation explained that law enforcement officials worldwide are trained to aim at the chest in dangerous situations (since it is the largest target), and the fact that Palestinians were hit in the head and legs suggests that there was no life-threatening situation, soldiers had ample time, and were deliberately trying to harm unarmed people. In fact, the Israelis are not even trying to conceal their shooting strategies ... Specially trained Israeli units, then, aim, shoot and hit the target in a calculated manner: Cripple, but keep the statistics of dead low. This is reported openly (and quite proudly) in the Israeli media ... Injuring Palestinians was and remains a consistent Israeli policy (by May 2001 two hundred eye injuries were treated in the St. John Eye Hospital alone). There are countless reports on the hopeless condition of many of the injured, and there are also detailed reports about medical needs that cannot be fulfilled. "For Gaza's population of 1 million, of whom 3,000 have been seriously injured in the intifadah, there are only two professionally trained rehabilitation specialists. Hundreds go without proper rehabilitation, not only because of inadequate facilities, but also because Israeli blockades around Gaza and the West Bank often cut off patients from health care." By December 2001 25,000 injured Palestinians were reported, many of them blind and disabled. Their fate is a slow death, far from the camera's eye. Some of them will die because there are no hospitals to treat them, others will die because they cannot survive in their community that is afflicted with hunger and destruction of infrastructure. Israel's systematic policy of injuring Palestinians cannot be explained as self-defence or as a spontaneous response to terrorism. It is an act of ethnic cleansing - a process in which one ethnic group is removed from territories that another is interested in ruling. In a place that attracts as much international attention as Israel/Palestine, ethnic cleansing cannot be carried out by a sudden act of mass slaughter or mass expulsion from the territory. Therefore there is a consistent process, the goal of which is slowly and gradually to compel people to die or to escape."

"A painting of British supermodel Kate Moss, portrayed naked and pregnant by famed figurative artist Lucian Freud, has sold for almost four million pounds at auction. An anonymous bidder bought the near-life-size, full-length portrait of Moss reclining on a bed, posed while she was pregnant with daughter Lila Grace, for 3.9 million pounds (7.25 million dollars, 5.7 million euros) after a furious battle between buyers. The long-awaited sale of "Naked Portrait 2002", however, was upstaged by another Freud piece -- "A Red-Haired Man on a Chair" -- which fetched 4.15 million pounds, the highest price yet paid the artist's work ... The sales room was packed with more than 600 art enthusiasts. Many were forced to stand in the aisles and doorways or watch the bidding unfold via television screens in an adjoining room. "Naked Portrait 2002", the result of months of sittings by Moss, portrays the normally waif-like model as an imposing, slightly distorted figure with her face in the background and the prone body dominating. Freud, 82, the German-born grandson of psychiatrist Sigmund Freud who came to England in 1931, is one of the most famous contemporary painters in the world, with a distinctive style, largely involving portraits or nudes. Most of Freud's sitters are little-known -- although as well as Moss, he has also painted Britain's Queen Elizabeth II -- and he usually prefers to portray people he knows well rather than models. Moss, 31, has been in the British newspaper headlines even more than usual in recent weeks because of her on-off relationship with rock star Pete Doherty, sacked as frontman of The Libertines because of his drug use."

"A box of soap that was made, according to the Romanian Jewish community, from the bodies of Jews killed in the Holocaust was found Thursday in a funeral home in Magdiel in central Israel, Army Radio reported. The box was buried under a tombstone that read "Soap of Holy People." Sources at Yad Vashem expressed disappointment at the radio report, calling the story a "pure invention that was given a stage by the media." A Yad Vashem spokeswoman said there is no proof the Nazis made soap from human bodies during the Holocaust. The sources said similar claims have been made in the past regarding soap made from Jewish bodies, including soap found last year in the Nahariya cemetery. In that case the soap was determined not to have been made from human remains. In 1990 samples from several soaps claimed to have been made from Jews were sent for DNA testing at Tel Aviv University. Likewise, those tests determined the soaps did not contain human fats. The director of the Jewish burial society Hevra Kadisha, Moti Elbaum, informed Army Radio of the discovery. "I was very surprised and terrified. I didn't know that in Israel there is a grave for soap that was made from saints that were placed on the fire," said Elbaum. "It is shocking and horrifying. Each time we are shocked more and more by the things that were done to our nation." The daughter and associates of the rabbi that performed the burial ceremony said he asked to be buried in a grave next to the soap grave. His associates also expressed anger at the reaction of Yad Vashem casting doubt on the authenticity of the soap. Holocaust survivors claim that the soap was engraved with writing that said it was made from fat from Jewish bodies."

"The Holocaust Museum Experience: Exploring Our Daily Decision Making" was developed by Ball State's Teachers College in partnership with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The guides will use artifacts and stories from the museum's permanent exhibition, "The Holocaust," and will allow students to tour the museum and interact with experienced museum educators ... Hotel chain portrays Hitler's retreat as idyllic resort,

"The Simon Wiesenthal Center issued a protest Thursday to InterContinental Hotels Group over an article in the British-based hotel chain's magazine, which portrayed Adolf Hitler's former mountain retreat as an idyllic vacation resort. Hitler built his retreat and southern headquarters near the town of Berchtesgaden in the scenic Bavarian Alps. The complex included a large home for the Nazi leader, a mountaintop conference center, and a bunker. Debate has raged in recent years over the extent to which the area should be re-invented as a destination for vacationers. InterContinental Hotels intends to open its new Berchtesgaden Resort hotel in March of 2005, according to its Web site. 'Thigh-slapping and yodeling' The winter 2005 edition of the hotel chain's magazine Highstyle included an article entitled "Berchtesgaden: It's not just a peak, it's a treat," in which the resort is advertised as among other things, a "cozy spot for a display of thigh-slapping local dancing" and "a particularly fine spot for yodeling. Unfortunately, Berchtesgaden holds a rather more sinister significance," said Wiesenthal Center director for international liaison Dr. Shimon Samuels, in a letter to InterContinental Hotels Group chairman David Webster. "It was the seat of evil, where Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goering, Joseph Goebbels and the Nazi leadership took most of the decisions that cost the world 70 million lives ... This dishonors the memory of all the victims of Nazism, offends the survivors and teaches tomorrow's murderers that scenic beauty can camouflage and efface their atrocities."

Anger as Mayor Likens Jewish Reporter to Nazi Camp Guard,

"The Jewish community reacted angrily tonight to London Mayor Ken Livingstone apparently likening a newspaper reporter to a concentration camp guard. The Board of Deputies of British Jews said they were “appalled” at Mr Livingstone’s “insensitivity” following his comments to Evening Standard journalist Oliver Finegold. On being told Mr Finegold was Jewish, Mr Livingstone told the reporter he was “just like a concentration camp guard”, it was claimed. The comments were made after a party marking the 20-year anniversary since Chris Smith became the first MP to come out as gay. The Board of Deputies of British Jews said in a statement: “We are appalled by this latest outburst by a man whose insensitivity seems to know no bounds.” Holocaust survivor Gina Turgel said: “I am quite a placid person, but this makes me so angry. How can a man in the mayor’s position make light of the Holocaust? “Particularly when as a nation we have just taken time to remember the horror of the past.” Mr Livingstone also reportedly told Mr Finegold to “work for a paper that doesn’t have a record of supporting fascism” – a reference to the Standard’s sister paper, the Daily Mail.
The outburst began after Mr Finegold identified himself and asked for a comment."

City broker claims £188,000 over 'anti-Semitism',

"A former employee of a City stockbroker is claiming £188,000 compensation for alleged racial discrimination. Samuel Jacobs, 34, who is of Jewish origin, is claiming constructive dismissal against the firm Edward Jones which has 9,000 offices around the world and a turnover of £1.3billion. According to documents submitted to an industrial tribunal, he says the company failed to investigate "complaints relating to anti-Semitic remarks". Mr Jacobs has also made allegations of money laundering. He is reported to have complained to the Financial Services Authority about UK money laundering and stated that "everyone has laundered some money at some time or another". Edward Jones denies all the claims. Mr Jacobs left the firm in November 2003 and sued in February last year."

"The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is all shook up -- or as they might say in Yiddish, all "verklempt" (upset) -- over the name for a virtual museum celebrating the Jewish contribution to rock music. The Cleveland-based museum has asked a federal judge to stop two journalists and a radio company executive from putting up a Web site called the Jewish Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, saying the site will infringe on the original's trademark name and that the public would confuse the two. But the people behind the Web site said they cannot understand why the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame is making such a "tsimmes" (Yiddish for big deal) over their plans to celebrate the exploits of such diverse talents as Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, some of the Ramones, Lou Reed and Elvis Presley's tailor, "Nudi" Cohen. Their nonprofit Web site, which is not up and running yet, plans to publish articles on the Internet about Jews who rock. In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Cleveland, the museum said journalists David Segal, Jeffrey Goldberg and radio executive Allen Goldberg "misappropriated Rock Hall's substantial intellectual property rights as well as the goodwill associated therewith. Unless restrained ... by the court, such conduct will, permit defendants to gain an unfair advantage over Rock Hall." It said the Cleveland museum has suffered irreparable harm and was seeking damages in excess of $100,000. 'THEY DON'T OWN THE JEWS' Regan Fay, a lawyer for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which has attracted 5.5 million visitors since opening in 1995, said calling something the Jewish Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was going to confuse people. "I don't think people would know the difference (between the two). We have a lot of Jewish rock and rollers in the Hall of Fame. ... It's like saying the Jewish Oscars or the Jewish Football Hall of Fame," he said ... "A bill enhancing penalties for hate crimes died in a Senate committee Tuesday after nearly two hours of debate. The Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee voted 4-3 against allowing SB181 to be heard by the full Senate.
This was the 10th attempt to pass a hate-crimes measure. This attempt was sponsored by Sen. Karen Hale, D-Salt Lake ... Hale and the bill's House sponsor, Rep. David Litvack, D-Salt Lake, hinted the bill may be back this session. They said they'd explore their options. Before the vote, Hale said she's sponsoring the bill based on "gut instinct from something that I feel is right."

"The recent death of a baby boy in New York City has prompted some Jewish groups to call for an end to the practice of male circumcision. City investigators believe the boy died after contracting herpes from an infected mohel who sucked the blood from the baby’s circumcision wound. Two other boys circumcised by the mohel have also contracted herpes, including the dead boy’s twin brother. Also known as Brit Milah, circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin from the penis. Although circumcision deaths in the U.S. are rare, the ritual is facing heavy criticism as it becomes synonymous with genital mutilation. “What happened to this innocent Jewish baby in New York is especially tragic,” said Gillian Flato, Director of Jews Against Circumcision, an international organization of Jews who have re-examined the practice and have found it to be immoral. “I think this is a wake up call for the Jewish community. Are they willing to blindly follow tradition and jeopardize their sons' lives? Circumcision does not make one Jewish. Being born to a Jewish mother makes you Jewish, or a Jewish father in the Reform tradition. Being Jewish is in your heart, not in your penis.” Dr. Ronald Goldman, Executive Director of the Jewish Circumcision Resource Center in Boston and author of Questioning Circumcision: A Jewish Perspective, said that many Jewish parents feel pressured to circumcise their newborn sons by family members or others within the Jewish community. “For a growing number of Jews, circumcision raises serious intellectual, emotional, and ethical conflicts. A lot of parents end up regretting their decision to have their baby boys circumcised, especially if they witness the ceremony,” said Goldman. “Those Jews that forgo circumcision are at peace with their decision. Jewish parents who are questioning circumcision have options." One of those options is a Brit Shalom, a naming ceremony that some Jewish families practice as an alternative to traditional circumcision. Growing in popularity, it shares many of the same ceremonial aspects of the Brit Milah, but without cutting the genitals. It is similar to the naming ceremony used to celebrate the birth of Jewish girls. Attempts to protect boys from circumcision have now crossed into the legal realm as well. While girls have been legally protected from circumcision in the U.S. since 1996, a federal bill proposal written by a San Diego group called MGMbill.org would extend that protection to boys. Matthew Hess, the group’s president, said that Jewish support for the proposed bill will be critical to its success. “Efforts to legally protect boys from MGM (“male genital mutilation”) will be much harder without the support of Jewish leaders,” said Hess. “Many politicians fear that supporting a ban on infant male circumcision will upset their Jewish constituencies and cost them votes in the next election. But those attitudes can be changed if more Jews speak out against the practice - just as Muslim women have changed opinions on female circumcision in Africa.” Hess himself is not Jewish, but he said that feedback and advice received from Jewish members of Congress and their staff have made him more aware of the need to encourage activism in the Jewish community at large." "Washington Post columnist David Ignatius added another element to the equation in his piece last week - the FBI's investigation into the activities of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). According to Ignatius, the investigation has landed on the doorstep of a number of senior neo-conservatives in the administration, and at least six administration officials have been forced to take on the services of attorneys in an effort to ward off charges that they leaked information to the pro-Israel lobby. The widening investigation could further hamper the promotion of Israel's interests in Washington, and restrict the activities of its supporters in the administration. The United States is not becoming pro-Palestinian, that's for sure; but the end of the Yasser Arafat era also brought an end to the automatic hostility toward the Palestinian issue in the corridors of power in Washington. In the newly created reality, the administration is far more cautious: it is not gushing enthusiastically about progress in the field; it is not leaping to its feet with proposals of its own to move the process forward; and it is no longer always adopting the Israeli approach."

Slovakia keeps law against Holocaust denial,

"Slovak lawmakers yesterday rejected a government proposal to decriminalize Holocaust denial, which is currently punishable by up to three years in prison. The Slovak Justice Ministry had argued that a 2001 law outlawing denial of the Holocaust infringed on freedom of speech. Lawmakers launched a counterproposal to keep the law in place, and their measure was approved in a 108-1 vote, with 19 abstentions. The ministry's proposal, which was part of a larger amendment to the penal code, stirred criticism throughout the country, including from several Jewish groups. Gabor Gal, one of the lawmakers opposing the government proposal, said the law was important to ensure that the such crimes were not repeated."

"Between fielding phone calls for an article she was writing — [Sharon] Waxman is The New York Times's Hollywood correspondent — and preparing for the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, where her book, "Rebels on the Backlot: Six Maverick Directors and How They Conquered the Hollywood Studio System" (HarperEntertainment), would be officially launched, Waxman spoke to the Forward from her home in Santa Monica, Calif ... Waxman, 41, has been stationed in Hollywood since 1995, and her book is evidence of how well she knows the terrain ... Waxman was born into an Orthodox family in the Cleveland suburb of University Heights, Ohio, where she had what she termed an "old-style Jewish education," studying at a Hebrew day school with the same group of 20 girls from kindergarten through 12th grade. After graduation, Waxman, like many young Orthodox, went to Israel for a year of study. It was a pivotal year both for Waxman and for a number of her contemporaries. "Many of the kids I went to Israel with had a religious awakening," she said. "Many ended up living on the West Bank or the Gaza Strip." Waxman's awakening was of a different sort. "It was in Israel that I was first bitten by the journalism bug," she said. Though she was still operating in an Orthodox milieu, she began to write dispatches for her hometown Jewish paper, the Cleveland Jewish News. Waxman's Israeli stay coincided with Israel's 1982 return to Egypt of the Sinai Peninsula ... After college, graduate study at Oxford and some time in Egypt, Waxman took an internship on the Washington Post's foreign desk. With the outbreak of the first intifada in 1987, she determined that the Middle East, and not some quiet desk, was where she needed to be. "In the course of three weeks I literally dropped everything and moved to Jerusalem," she said. Though she had no job prospects when she left, as a speaker of both Hebrew and Arabic, she proved irresistible to potential employers. Within days of her arrival, she landed a job with Reuters, one she held for the next two years. At a dinner party hosted by Israel's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Waxman met her future husband, a French businessman named Claude Memmi. Waxman moved to Paris in 1989 and spent the next six years writing from Europe on a freelance basis for a variety of American outlets — the Forward among them. Waxman tried for years, with little success, to secure a full-time writing job. But when the Washington Post, for which she had been working on an informal basis, offered her a newly-created position in Los Angeles, it came as something of a shock. "I had been looking for a job in the States," she said, "but had assumed it would be on the East Coast. I'd never even been to Los Angeles before." Nor had she covered the entertainment industry. And yet, for all the ground she's covered, Waxman remains convinced that the world is small. Before running off to Sundance, she shared one last anecdote. In the summer of 2003, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was running for governor of California, the Washington Post assigned her to profile the actor-candidate, in part because of Waxman's contacts in the entertainment industry. In the course of her reporting, she interviewed Schwarzenegger's longtime publicist, Charlotte Parker. Over a deli lunch in the San Fernando Valley, in a discussion that touched on the question of the Austrian actor's roots, the two women got to talking about their own pasts. Though a decade or so apart, the two discovered that they were both not only from Cleveland Jewish homes, but also onetime residents of the same street and students at the same school. "I could have fallen off my chair," she said. "And Parker! It's maybe the most non-Jewish name you can come up with."

Milan bans 'blasphemous' poster,

"Dan Brown sparked controversy with his novel based on Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper - now a French clothing company has followed suit in Italy. The authorities in Milan have banned a billboard featuring an all-female version of the 15th Century fresco, which the fashion house itself says was inspired by the hotly debated book. The campaign has run without controversy in both Paris and New York. But its use of religious symbols could offend Milan, the town hall ruled. The advert for the Marithe et Francois Girbaud fashion house features well-clad women surrounding what seems to be a female Christ. The only male in the picture is a young bare-chested man sitting on a woman's lap in a provocative pose. Italy's advertising watchdog, the IAP, said the ad's use of Christian symbols including a dove and a chalice "inevitably recalls the very foundations of the Christian faith". This kind of image cannot be parodied for commercial ends without offending the sensitivity of at least part of the population," it said. And what is more, "One of the women apostles is kissing the naked torso of a man, which just makes the imitation more offensive" ... The fashion house meant to turn the painting on its head as a tribute to women and their role in society. And while their application was rejected, observers note their spurned efforts have doubtless brought the company more publicity than if their request had been approved."

Hasidic circumcision rite debated,

"The suctioning of blood by mouth during ritual circumcisions has long been dropped as a common practice by most of the Jewish world, but many Jews and non-Jews alike were shocked to learn in recent days that the practice remains standard in many Hasidic communities. The largely unknown practice, which has been used during the Jewish circumcision ritual for thousands of years, came to public attention last week when New York City health officials said that a Hasidic rabbi and mohel from Monsey was suspected of transmitting the herpes virus to three New York City infants he had circumcised. One of the infants died in October. Rabbi Yitzchok Fischer, a prominent Hasidic mohel, suctions blood orally during the circumcision ritual, known as a bris, in order to remove impurities. He is suspected of passing the oral herpes virus, which generally produces cold sores but can be passed to another person's genital area ... This past August, the journal Pediatrics published a study that concluded that the oral suctioning of blood during a ritual Jewish circumcision, a practice called "metzitzah," puts infants at risk of contracting herpes and should be eliminated. The study looked at eight cases of infants who contracted herpes after oral suctioning during a bri. Twelve researchers, including seven from Israel, also considered the religious and cultural traditions behind the practice. They noted that the Babylonian Talmud, completed in the fifth century, required oral suctioning in order to remove health risks to the infant. But later rabbinical authorities, the study found, modified their approach as they developed new understandings of hygiene and disease transmission ... Rabbi Gerald Chirnomas from Boonton, N.J., a prominent mohel in the Greater New York region, said the practice of orally suctioning blood was the norm for centuries .. Health concerns about the practice are known to have come up from time to time, Chirnomas said. During the mid-19th century, for instance, the Polish government forbade the practice when a popular mohel had a tooth abscess and an infant died. Rabbi Avi Shafran, director of public affairs for Agudath Israel of America, an advocacy group for Orthodox Judaism, said that while the practice of suctioning blood by mouth is rare, Hasidic communities that believe it is important are unlikely to give it up ... Fischer is not accused of any crimes, but in a day when there is great concern about sexual molestation of children, many may wonder how an adult can legally put his mouth on a child's genitals."

"American billionaire renews his interest in the club on the day fans remember Munich crash FANS of Manchester United reacted furiously yesterday to a renewed takeover attempt by Malcolm Glazer, an American billionaire, on the day that the club was paying respects to the eight players lost in the Munich air disaster 47 years ago. Although it seemed that the Glazer family could sink no lower in the estimations of the Old Trafford faithful, the move alienated them further from the people they will rely on to buy tickets and merchandise if their bid is successful. As supporters during United’s 2-0 win over Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon hung a banner commemorating “February 6, 1958”, the Florida-based entrepreneurs — who have never been to Old Trafford — were putting the finishing touches to a fresh bid. If the Glazers had been at the game, they would have seen supporters handing out 60,000 cards proclaiming the reasons why they believe that the owners of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Super Bowl champions of American football two years ago, would spell bad news for United. The fliers contained words of defiance from Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, Eric Cantona, the former United player, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the first active first-team player to speak on the record against the takeover. The significance of the Glazer family’s timing was not lost on fans. The sympathy that the Munich air crash evoked among football supporters around the world is one of the reasons that United is the club it is today. The tragedy fed its mythical status, which in turn has made it the biggest name in the game. It is that brand that the Glazers are seeking to exploit. On one hand is Prime Minister Victor Yanukovych, a protege of the authoritarian and reputedly venal incumbent president, Leonid Kuchma ... Yanukovych echoes Kuchma’s line of favoring closer ties with Russia than the United States and, if elected president, is believed likely to appoint Kuchma as prime minister; thereby leaving operational control of the country in Kuchma’s hands. Yanukovych’s principal rival in the Oct. 31 election is a charismatic former prime minister named Victor Yuschenko, who advocates greater privatization of the nation’s economy and transparency in business practices to prevent corruption ... [I]n a series of interviews conducted during the month of July, JTA found a preponderance of Jews either favoring Yanukovych or declaring a “pox upon both your houses” kind of neutrality on the two main candidates ... Kuchma developed close business and personal relationships with such Jewish business “oligarchs” as Vadim Rabinovich, Grigori Surkis, who owns Kiev Dynamo, the country’s most successful soccer team, and Viktor Pinchuk, an industrialist and media magnate who several years ago married Kuchma’s daughter, Olena. Yuschenko was among several top opposition politicians who signed a statement expressing staunch opposition to a threat by the government to close [newspaper] Silski Visti for inciting anti-Semitism. Beyond their take on Yuschenko, Jews here continue to fear that the opposition coalition — an unlikely amalgam of pro-capitalist and pro-socialist parties brought together by their common detestation of Kuchma — strongly leans toward a brand of Ukrainian nationalism and anti-Semitism suffused with anger at Jewish oligarchs. The oligarchs are portrayed as having illegally acquired many of the nation’s natural resources on behalf of world Zionism in publications like Silski Visti and Personnel, which is published by the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management, a university-like institution with 35,000 students that has become a center for anti-Semitic expression over the past year. At the end of July, Yuschenko sought to address the perception of the opposition coalition as being suffused with anti-Semitism by publicly expelling a prominent member of his Our Ukraine Party, Oleg Tiagnybok, for publicly expressing anti-Semitic views. Yuschenko told JTA: “We will not allow anyone to” make remarks negatively “impacting the national feelings of any national group" ... [T]here is little doubt that some, like Rabinovich, president of the All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress and United Jewish Community of Ukraine, and Pinchuk, both of whom have substantial holdings in the Ukrainian print and electronic media, are solidly in the Yanukovych camp. Alexander Feldman, president of the Jewish Fund of Ukraine and a member of Parliament, last month endorsed Yanukovych in his role as president of the Association of National-Cultural Societies of Ukraine, an influential organization representing many of the country’s minority communities ... The vast majority of the approximately 25 Jewish members of the Ukrainian Parliament are solidly pro-government; the principal exception is Evhen Chervonenko, a former racing-car champion who is Yuschenko’s closest Jewish adviser ... Chervonenko, 44, a flamboyant character who owns a variety of businesses, including two large bottling plants, supermarkets and a pharmaceutical firm, believes that the tendency of prominent Jews to support Kuchma’s designated successor, Yanukovych, is not due to genuine affection for either man. Many Jewish leaders are businessmen and the government can squeeze them, especially through the tax police and denial of credit, Chervonenko told JTA ... Chervonenko accuses the Kuchma regime of “playing the anti-Semitic card” during the election campaign by surreptitiously encouraging anti-Semitic journals with links to the opposition to publish anti-Semitic material that the regime can then self-righteously denounce. Yet he acknowledges there are genuine anti-Semites in the opposition coalition, noting that some months ago he accosted one of them, Vassily Chervoni, in a washroom in the Parliament building. Chervonenko said with a grin, “I put his head in the sink and told him, ‘One more bad word about Israel and I’ll really mess you up.’ ”

"He lives in a $3.7 million home in Herzliya Pituah and his net worth was recently estimated at $4.1 billion. He was just crowned "the richest person in Israel" by the Israeli press. No, it's not Steff Wertheimer, not Lev Leviev and not even Sammy Ofer. Try Leonid Nevzlin. If the name is unfamiliar, you're not alone. Only a little over a year in Israel, Nevzlin recently became the major shareholder in Russia's biggest oil company, Yukos, after its principal shareholder Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who is in trouble with the Russian authorities, gave him his 60 percent share. To understand the size of Yukos, consider that in 2002 alone it posted annual revenues of $11 billion and a net profit of $3b. But the title of richest Israeli may be premature, as Nevzlin's wealth is only on paper. The assets of the company he controls have been seized by the government, which is seeking more than $27 billion in back taxes. Some say that Yukos's strength was the source of its weakness. By becoming so wealthy and so powerful, the Yukos group posed a threat to the powers that be. Nevzlin claims that Putin is taking revenge on him and Khodorkovsky for supporting Putin's opponents in the last elections. To escape an arrest warrant, Nevzlin fled to Israel in October 2003. He came with two other Jewish heads of Yukos, Vladimir Duvdov and Michail Brodno, who together own 22% of the company, or $7 billion worth. Yukos head Khodorkovsky, also Jewish, wasn't as lucky. Once considered Russia's richest man, worth an estimated $15 billion, he has sat for the past year in a Russian jail. According to the Russian press, Nevzlin took control of Khodorkovsky's stake in Bank Menatep under a shareholder agreement foreseeing a transfer of ownership if Yukos were stripped of substantial assets ... THE FAIRYTALE story of how Nevzlin and other Jews became Russian oligarchs starts almost 20 years ago. In 1987, Nevzlin and Brodno were simple computer programmers working for the government. One day Nevzlin saw a small ad – a marketing company was offering its services to computer firms. He called and Khodorkovsky answered. The two men eventually became friends, and together established Bank Menatep. Shortly thereafter, prime minister Boris Yeltsin began the privatization scheme which was to become the source of wealth for many Jewish tycoons. His government began distributing vouchers in public companies to Russian citizens. But to the disappointment of the public, the vouchers turned out to be practically worthless. Many citizens didn't even save them. Khodorkovsky and Nevzlin didn't mind that the vouchers were considered worthless; they realized their true value, and via Menatep began buying them up, often at laughable prices. Almost 10 years later, in 1996, Yeltsin encountered big political problems and couldn't manage more than 10% in the polls. Desperate for money, he turned to Menatep. The bank reportedly gave him $200m. for his election campaign – $197 more than the law allowed. After his return to power, Yeltsin thanked them by offering them their choice of shares in publicly owned natural resource companies. It is believed that some 70%-control in Russia's biggest public gas, oil and metals companies was distributed to a small group of businessmen at that time."

"The threat is from Muslim converts and immigrants in the West, a conference on anti-Semitism is told. The golden age of Australian Jews is over, though most don't realise it, an international conference on anti-Semitism heard yesterday. "Muslim anti-Semitism could be laying the foundation for a second Holocaust," US-based Middle East Forum director Daniel Pipes told the two-day conference at Monash University. The controversial American commentator said the golden age of Jews in the US was 1945-2000, when they did not have to worry about themselves and could back other causes. The anti-Semitic threat came from Muslim converts and immigrants, and this was true throughout the West. "European Jewry's future is in doubt. Jews who survived the Holocaust must again fear for their future," Mr Pipes said. "Polls say half the Jews of France have considered emigrating." The Muslim world today was like Germany in the 1930s, when state-sponsored insults, conspiracy theories and sporadic violence prepared people for mass murder."Former Iranian president Ali Rafsanjani said a nuclear bomb in Israel will leave nothing on the ground, whereas it will only damage the world of Islam," Mr Pipes said. Mr Pipes, a conservative Middle East analyst, has made a career out of identifying and denouncing what he sees as radical Muslim penetration of US institutions, according to a report in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz yesterday. The paper reported that President George Bush had failed to renominate Mr Pipes to the board of the US Institute of Peace. Today, the director of an Israeli group that monitors Palestinian media will tell the conference that four out of five Palestinian children want to die as suicide bombers. Itamar Marcus, director of the Jerusalem-based Palestinian Media Watch, told The Age that the Palestinian Authority teaches hatred to children through music videos and sport. Mr Marcus is in Melbourne to address the two-day conference at Monash University. The final sessions will be held today. "Jews are presented as the causes of the world's troubles. Killing Jews is both self-defence and a religious obligation," Mr Marcus said. Mr Marcus said the post-Arafat Palestinian Authority was similar to 1999, before the second intifada: it's timefor fighters to rest, but violence would resume when profitable. Professor Dina Porat, of Tel Aviv University, told the conference anti-Semitism was still rising, but the global response was so strong it could be called a turning point."

Federal Hate Bill Will Pass This Spring,

"Although defeated in conference between the House and Senate on Oct. 8, the "Big Brother" federal "anti-hate" bill, the "Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act," will easily become law when it is re-introduced by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith and the gay lobby this spring. In a procedural, non-binding vote on Sept. 28, the House of Representatives voted 213 to 186 in favor of passage. This concurs with the Senate vote of 65 to 33 in its favor on April 15. This means that the ADL, originator of this legislation, can boldly re-introduce it through their lackeys, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass) and Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), and it will surely pass. The overwhelming majority of Republican and Democratic members of Congress have pledged to pass it. Although the ADL was successful, during the 1990's, in persuading 48 states to adopt some version of its "Model Anti-hate Bill," the ADL is intent on the real prize: establishment of a vast federal "anti-hate" bureaucracy forcing the states to adhere to a federal anti-hate agenda. "The Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act" would demolish all restrictions against federal intrusion into states enforcement of civil rights law. In fact, if the federal government did not like the verdict of a hate crimes trial on the local level, the federal bill gives the government the right to intervene and, presumably, retry the case to its satisfaction. Even more ominous, the federal hate bill will powerfully enforce upon the states the practical federal definition that "hate equals bias against homosexuality." Under the ADL's pet legislation, the "Hate Crimes Statistics Act of 1990," the ADL made a place for itself as the definer of what hate is, and the gatherer of statistics on "hate crimes" for the federal government. With additional encouragement by Attorney General Janet "Butch" Reno, the ADL, through its police training manuals, ‘anti-hate" videos, and hate crimes data collection system, has now become law enforcement's teacher on what are "hate" and "hate crimes." If the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act" is passed this spring, the ADL will be in even greater control, guiding enforcement of its agenda through a huge, Orwellian, federal anti-hate bureaucracy. Because the ADL's police educational program emphasizes that "hate equals bias against homosexuality," the federal hate bill automatically targets evangelical Christians. No book is so full of bias against homosexuality as the Bible, calling homosexuality an "abomination." Thus, Bible-believing Christians, automatically become violators of the ADL/federal definition of "hate," becoming potential "hate criminals." Already, we see Christians in Philadelphia, for nothing more than preaching of the gospel, arrested and indicted for violation of Pennsylvania's ADL hate law. Passage of the ADL's federal hate law bill will exponentially increase the power of government "thought crimes" police to indict Christians as "thought criminals" nationwide."

Within Israel, the show has added some glamor to the task of Israel advocacy — in Hebrew, “hasbarah.” Abroad, it has gotten amused media coverage although Israel continues to battle attempts to paint it as an international pariah. The show taps into Israel’s desire to be better understood on the international stage, to replace the army generals and stiff government spokesmen on CNN’s screens with engaging, telegenic young people who might more easily win sympathy for Israel’s side in its conflict with the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab world ... Israelis spend a great deal of time thinking about how they are perceived abroad, so perhaps it is only natural, observers say, that it has become the first country to produce a reality television show on that subject. Shai notes that Israel has been defending its right to exist since the state was born. “The Ambassador” has brought that task into the living rooms of Israelis, who for the first time are discussing such questions as how Israel should best explain its decision to build the security fence to the world at large ... The contestants, all between 24 and 30 years old, include lawyers, business students, an Ethiopian immigrant and both religious and secular Jews. Selected from a pool of thousands of applicants, they are attractive and well-spoken in both Hebrew and English. The show was modeled in part on the U.S. reality show “The Apprentice,” where Donald Trump eliminates one contestant on each show until he chooses the one who will be his assistant. "The United States may rank Israel among the group of countries not taking action against human trafficking - a move that could result in the imposition of economic sanctions. In its response to questions on the matter from the U.S. administration, the Justice Ministry noted that while Israel has seen grave cases involving the exploitation of foreign workers, and even isolated incidents that can be defined as trade for the purposes of labor, these cases do not meet the U.S. legal definition of human trafficking. The U.S. State Department publishes an annual report on international human trafficking, ranking countries according to their efforts to eradicate the trend. In 2001, when the report was first published, Israel was ranked on the lowest tier, among countries that do not meet the minimum standards in the struggle against human trafficking and are not making any efforts to improve. Over the last three years, however, Israel moved up a notch, and is now included among countries that are making an effort to get better. Justice Ministry officials fear, however, that the upcoming report, which will be published in June, will again see Israel on the lowest tier. "Israel's position - that foreign workers are exploited but not to the extent of trafficking - was rejected by the Americans," Justice Ministry attorney Miri Sasson told the Knesset committee on foreign workers this week. Also addressing the panel, the director of the Foreign Ministry's human rights division, Daniel Maron, said: "The United States has no doubt that there is human trafficking in Israel." One of the central criteria stipulated in U.S. law as a minimal standard for combating the phenomenon is harsh punishment. Human trafficking in the United States carries a penalty of 16 years in jail, whereas in Israel the maximum penalty is one year.

Report: Iran sentences alleged Israeli spy to 10 years,

"Iran has sentenced a person to 10 years in prison for spying for Israel, a senior judiciary official was quoted as saying on Thursday.The semi-official Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA), citing Tehran's Revolutionary Court chief Ali Mobasheri, gave no further details and did not specify whether the convicted spy was an Iranian or an Israeli citizen. Iranian officials could not immediately be reached for comment. "It concerns a spy who worked for Israel," Mobasheri said. "The spy has been sentenced to 10 years in prison." Israeli officials have warned in recent weeks that Tehran is nearing the "point of no return" in its quest for nuclear weapons and have hinted that Israel may try to bomb or sabotage Iran's nuclear facilities. Iran denies seeking nuclear arms and has said it will retaliate against Israel using medium range ballistic missiles if it comes under attack. Iran's judiciary spokesman told a weekly news conference on Wednesday that one of four people arrested for spying on Iran's atomic facilities had been tried and sentenced. He gave no further details. But Mobasheri said those four spies, all of whom worked for Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, are still awaiting sentencing."

Survivors ‘outraged’ over CBC News Sunday,

"A survivor of Auschwitz who was interviewed by CBC Television says she feels “betrayed” by the broadcaster because the segment included an interview with a notorious American anti-Zionist and unremitting critic of Holocaust reparations. Even though Judy Cohen of Toronto was invited back to CBC News Sunday this past weekend to rebut the remarks of the controversial Norman Finkelstein, the whole episode has left a bad taste. “I think it’s the end of the matter,” Cohen told The CJN as she was preparing her remarks for this past Sunday’s show. “But why have something controversial about Auschwitz, of all times, when you’re trying to have a serious discussion about the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz?” Cohen, a well-known Holocaust educator, and two other local Auschwitz survivors, Elizabeth de Jong and Max Eisen, appeared on CBC News Sunday Jan. 23 to talk about their wartime memories as part of the broadcaster’s coverage of the Auschwitz anniversary. They say that unbeknownst to them, a debate then followed between Finkelstein and University of Toronto historian and Holocaust expert Michael Marrus on what forms Holocaust commemoration should take. “They kept that secret from us,” Cohen said. In a letter to the CBC, Cohen said that “had we known this, we would have refused to appear on your show.” The Jewish son of survivors himself and a darling of the far-left, Finkelstein is a U.S. political science professor and author. He is also a much-reviled figure among most of the North American Jewish establishment, whom he accuses of ruthlessly exploiting the Holocaust for political and financial gain, and of using it to justify Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. His book, The Holocaust Industry, accuses elite Jewish “hucksters” and “frauds” of “shaking down” Germany for reparations. In her letter, Cohen said she and the two other survivors appeared on the show “in good faith” but are now “outraged and wonder why Evan Solomon, the host of the show, did not refuse to do this? Why did you go along with this travesty or at least warn us in advance?” Finkelstein, she went on, has a “well-known contempt of remembrance and commemoration of our nightmarish experiences.” Cohen said she took particular offense at Finkelstein’s remark that “there are now more Holocaust museums in the United States than there are Burger Kings. And it is only a matter of time that there are more Holocaust museums than there are McDonalds" ... In his comments, which are posted on the show’s website, Finkelstein explains his book’s argument: That “the Nazi Holocaust has been exploited, mainly by American Jewish elites, American Jewish organizations for political and financial gain. Specifically, the Nazi Holocaust has been used as a club to silence criticism of the State of Israel. Most recently it takes the form of a new so called anti-Semitism which in actuality is non-existent, but there is a claim of new anti-Semitism, a resurgence of a 1930’s style of anti-Semitism, and that is just being used, exploited to silence critics of the Israeli repression in the occupied territories.” He went on to wonder “whether it is time to commemorate the suffering of others."

"As in Nazi Germany, there is an entire 'culture of hatred' in Palestinian society today, from textbooks to crossword puzzles, from day camps to TV music videos," Sharansky said. "Calling for the murder of Jews, as Jews, is the end result." Report co-author Itamar Marcus, who directs Palestinian Media Watch, said Palestinian television has consistently promoted the message that "the Jews are an evil force, and [evil] is inherent to the Jews and therefore they have to be killed." The report accuses the PA of constructing a "legal file," a virtual propaganda outline for incitement against Jews that uses as its template incitement from Nazi Germany. The file, the report said, consists of three phases: presenting Jews as subhuman and possessing evil qualities; convincing viewers the Jewish nation threatens the existence of Palestinians, Arabs, and the world in general; and concluding with the Palestinian version of the "final solution," the destruction of Israel and elimination of the Jews. The incitement plan, said Marcus, is directed by the Palestinian Authority and carried out by the PA's religious, political and academic elite, and through the PA-controlled media. At the request of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Abbas during the run up to the Palestinian elections Jan. 9 met with the head of the Palestinian Broadcasting Authority and reportedly asked him to filter television programs to prevent the broadcast of inciting material. Israeli-Russian journalist calls for castration as anti-terror step,

"An article calling for the castration of Israeli Arabs as a means of fighting terrorism was published last week in the leading Israeli-Russian daily Novosti. The article, called "How To Force Them To Leave" and written by Marian Belenki, one of the paper's prominent journalists, said that the threat of castration may be strong enough to encourage the Arabs to leave the country. The author also proposed that the Chinese method for lowering birth rates be implemented in Israel for the Arab population in order to lower their birth rates. According to this method, people who have more than one child are deprived of various benefits, lose their jobs, and are under threat of exile. Cash prizes for young men who voluntarily agree to the castration will also be provided, according to the proposed method. The paper's editor, Leonid Petorkovsky, said the publication of the article was a grave mistake, explaining that the editors overlooked the contents of the article and checked only grammar and spelling. He added that after the publication of the article, the paper published a condemnation of the piece, and suspended the editor responsible for three months. However, what is even more surprising than the fact that the piece got published, is that the paper did not receive any responses from readers or public representatives of the Russian community. It should be noted that the paper is one of two leading dailies of the Russian community in Israel."

"Last week I took part in an Intelligence Squared debate on Zionism. This was a more than usually disturbing experience. It wasn’t just that the motion, ‘Zionism today is the real enemy of the Jews’, blamed Jewish self-determination for the current threat to Jewish existence. It was that this profoundly anti-Jewish motion was proposed by three Jews — and (unsuccessfully) opposed by three Jews. Thus we had the spectacle of Jews being forced to defend themselves against other Jews arguing that anti-Jewish hatred was the Jews’ own fault —the classic argument used by those who have hated Jews down the ages. Of course, the motion’s proposers — Professor Avi Shlaim, a ‘revisionist’ Israeli historian, Jacqueline Rose, a professor of English literature and Amira Hass, a Ha’aretz journalist based in the disputed territories —didn’t see it that way ... Whatever the disavowals of Shlaim and his team, through their distorted, factually wrong and grossly unfair analysis they powerfully contributed to the vicious delegitimisation of Israel that is now under way, and beyond that the attempt to undermine the Jews’ moral role in history. Jews like these are now doing real damage to the Jewish people. They don’t just provide ammunition for its enemies, but make them fireproof against charges of anti-Jewish prejudice. That’s why the media have now discovered the delightful sport of Jew-baiting — using Jews to denounce Israel and then setting them against other Jews, to watch them try to destroy each other. Most of these Jewish tormentors are on the left ... They are therefore all too prone to assimilate the prejudices of the surrounding society. Showing indifference or contempt for their people’s culture and traditions, the only time they wrap themselves in their Jewish identity is when they trash it in public. In Israel, one can see this pathology at work on a larger scale. Israelis who obsessively distort or exaggerate Israel’s misdeeds and dismiss the existential threats that it faces seem to have internalised the truly murderous hatred that surrounds them. There’s nothing new in this. Throughout history, some Jews have taken on the mantle of their persecutors. The originator of the blood libel in the Middle Ages, after all, was reportedly a Jewish convert. And Marx and Freud — the inspiration for many of today’s Jewish Israel-haters — turned anti-Jewish prejudice into political and psychological doctrine. But it would be unwise to dismiss this as the pathology of a few on the fringes. For what they are saying strikes a more widespread chord. This is because they purport to speak the language of Jewish ethics, which they define around the role of the Jew as perpetual victim. The implications of this are profound. Was Israel not founded, after all, on the belief that never again would Jews go passively to the slaughter but would fight to defend themselves? But if Jews believe that militarism is unethical, then defending Israel’s right to defend itself may cause a loss of Jewish self-belief and a further spur to assimilation. It is this looming Jewish identity crisis that made last week’s debate not merely a cause of revulsion but the symbol of a potentially lethal malaise."

Kuropas maintains he is not an anti-Semite,

"Myron Kuropas wants people to know that he is not a Holocaust denier or an anti-Semite. At the same time, the part-time Northern Illinois University instructor and Ukrainian nationalist is not backing away from articles he wrote several years ago that for a time last week made him persona non grata in the Jewish community and gave fodder to critics of President Bush. In a wide-ranging interview with the Chronicle on Tuesday, Kuropas, 72, said he was sorry for the minor controversy that took hold after he returned from a White House-sanctioned trip last month to the swearing-in ceremony for new Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko. News stories that appeared last week unearthed writings in which he appeared to agree that some Jews exploit the memory of the Holocaust for their own gain and suggested Jews were at least partly responsible for Soviet atrocities against Ukrainians during the 1920s and 1930s. But many Jews maintain that the latter belief is common among anti-Semites. Told of Kuropas' statements, an unnamed Bush administration official dissociated the administration from Kuropas, according to news reports, saying that had they known about Kuropas' writings, they wouldn't have included Kuropas in the delegation. On Tuesday, Kuropas said "never in my life would I dream of denying the Holocaust," and he acknowledged that "no group has suffered historically as much as the Jews." He has made a trip to Israel, supports the country's right to exist and declared, "I love the Israelis." But he also said: "I favor a Ukrainian-Jewish dialogue, but it has to be between equals. ... It can't be where the Holocaust is the big elephant in the room." Central to many of the opinions Kuropas holds about Jews and the relationship between the Ukrainian and Jewish communities are hundreds of years of Eastern European and American history stretching all the way to 2004. As Kuropas sees it, some Ukrainians committed atrocities during the Holocaust, but some Jews were integral to the Soviet Union's Bolshevik Revolution, and, by extension, Soviet repression of Ukraine that included a famine that killed millions.
He also thinks some Jewish groups were overzealous in hunting down John Demjanjuk, a former Ohio auto worker who was put on trial in Israel in 1987-88 for being the Nazi war criminal "Ivan the Terrible." "What started to happen was in the American press, as well as in the Jewish press - but mainly in the American press - there were articles about the 'Ukrainian Nazi John Demjanjuk,'" he said. He disputes that any Ukrainian could technically have been a Nazi, because he or she could not have gained entry to the Nazi Party. Demjanjuk initially was found guilty, but in 1993 was set free on appeal by the Israeli Supreme Court. Demjanjuk has since regained his American citizenship, but in 2004, an American court found that there was strong evidence that he served in Nazi death camps, although he was not accused of being "Ivan the Terrible." As of December, the U.S. government was trying to deport him ... The Demjanjuk case and a sense of rising anti-Jewish feeling among younger Ukrainians spurred him to seek a dialogue with the Jewish community through the American Jewish Committee, Kuropas said, although Maynard Wishner, the past national president of the AJC, said it was his group that initiated the dialogue. Kuropas became disillusioned with that effort, because in his view his Jewish counterparts were not willing to look objectively at the Demjanjuk case or at the full scope of Jewish-Ukrainian history ... What Kuropas has said, in effect, and what he repeated Tuesday, is that it's in some Jews' "interest to continue the turmoil" of the Holocaust "because as (Norman) Finkelstein suggests, it's a money thing." Kuropas is referring to "The Holocaust Industry," a 2000 book by Norman Finkelstein, a Jew and the son of a Holocaust survivor. In it, Finkelstein argues that some Jewish organizations use the memory of the Holocaust to get money from wealthy alleged Holocaust collaborators. "It's their business to make sure there are anti-Semites out there because they get donations," Kuropas said. Michael Kotzin, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, said that contrary to what Kuropas says about Jews' alleged unwillingness to have a frank discussion about how the memory of the Holocaust is employed currently, "you can have a conversation about it." But at the same time, some of Kuropas' writings on the subject can be considered anti-Semitic if they veer into hostility toward Jews or begin distorting reality. "We wouldn't necessarily call him a blatant anti-Semite," said Lonnie Nasatir, Midwest director of the Anti-Defamation League. But statements that some Jews exploit the memory of the Holocaust for their own benefit are not accurate, he said, and he added that the ADL was satisfied with the White House's response to the revelation of some of Kuropas' writings ... Since stories about Kuropas appeared in newspapers last week, Democratic congressmen Rahm Emanuel of Illinois and Henry Waxman of California have called on NIU President John Peters to "re-evaluate" the university's relationship with Kuropas. A spokeswoman for Emanuel said Friday that his office had not delved into what exactly was meant by "re-evaluate." On Tuesday, the Jewish Federation of Greater Rockford urged NIU to "end the university's association with Dr. Myron Kuropas" because of his past statements "regarding Jews and the Holocaust." Kuropas, a former school teacher and principal, teaches education courses at NIU. As of Wednesday, NIU spokeswoman Melanie Magara said the university has not changed its position on Kuropas' employment - which in general has been that Kuropas is a valued employee with good reviews from students and that he has never brought his personal political beliefs into the classroom. His supervisors also have expressed support for him. Kuropas said he has not received any negative feedback locally over the recent controversy, although the week since the first stories appeared has seemed more like a year. "It's as bad as being a child molester," he said about being called a Holocaust denier. "Once someone calls you a child molester or a racist, you're dead. There's no way that you can defend yourself. "I regret this very much," he said of the media attention he's received. "I don't regret writing what I wrote. ... On occasion I can be a little strident. Perhaps some of my stridency should have been tempered."

"The same week that the eyes of the world were on the moving ceremonies to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, there were reports in Britain and at the official web site of the British Labor Party, election campaign messages that smacked of anti-Semitism. In one poster, two senior politicians from the Conservative Party --Chairman Michael Howard, who is also the opposition's shadow prime minister, and Oliver Letwin, the opposition's shadow chancellor of the exchequer - were depicted as flying pigs. Both are Jews. This week Howard was depicted as Faigin, the haunted Jewish criminal from Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, the most well-known anti-Semitic stereotype in Britain. There is no doubt that this is a systematic and sophisticated anti-Semitic campaign, in the style of British understatement. A few weeks ago, Trade Minister Mike O'Brien wrote an article for a Muslim newspaper in which he argued that only Labor will protect Muslim rights and bring about the establishment of a Palestinian state. "Ask yourselves, what will Michael Howard do for the Muslims of Britain? Would his foreign policy aim to help Palestine?" asked O'Brien. A few months earlier, the chairman of the British Labor Party, Ian McCarthy, attacked Letwin for his economic approach and called him a "21st century Faigin." Rabbi Jonathan Romain, a leader of the Reform Movement in Britain, responded in the press and said that labor's campaign messages are spoiling the atmosphere and had crossed the line between political attacks and unacceptable anti-Semitic imagery. Commentators in the British press are writing that there is a deliberate strategy of using clear hints of anti-Semitism to reach the Muslim community, which is several times larger than the Jewish community. In an article titled 'Faigin, Shylock and Blair,' which appeared in the Times, William Rees-Mogg criticizes the British premier for his responsibility for Labor's strategy plans that are meant to destroy Howard's candidacy by inappropriately using the Conservative Party's candidate's Jewish background. The Global Forum on Anti-Semitism, jointly operated by the Israeli government and the Jewish Agency, announced last week that there was a 100 percent increase in Britain or anti-Semitic incidents in 2004. The data was confirmed by various Jewish monitoring groups in Britain, which pointed to a rise in anti-Semitic violence in the streets, expressed in the form of assaults on people with a Jewish appearance. The vast majority of incidents involve the participation of Muslims, who are acquiring ever increasing political influence in Britain. Some Muslim British leaders even demonstratively announced their boycott of ceremonies marking the Holocaust. What is taking place in Britain makes tangible Europe's pendulum swings between emphasizing the unprecedented aspect of the Holocaust and an opportunism that sometimes tries to use anti-Semitism for political purposes. Ben Cohen, a former producer and journalist for the BBC, argues that it is impossible to disassociate the anti-Semitic incidents in Britain from the hostile coverage of Israel and the fashion in the radical left to challenge the legitimacy of Israel's existence. On the other hand, he explains, for electoral reasons, many British politicians refuse to condemn forthrightly the anti-Semitic incitement coming from some Muslim leaders. He particularly accuses London Mayor Ken Linvingstone, for whom the Muslim vote was so important he hosted the Egyptian radical clergyman Yusuf el Karadawi a few months ago, despite Karadawi's declarations that there is no room for dialogue with Jews, "except with the sword and rifle." Blair's government, which has often come out strongly against violent anti-Semitism, has to recognize the danger of more sophisticated anti-Semitism sometimes hiding behind a mask of intellectualism and sometimes behind media spins for the sake of electoral politics."

"Australia has secretly forced a senior Israeli diplomat to leave the country, for reasons that neither government will divulge. The effective expulsion of the Canberra-based diplomat - described as a "consul" in Israel - has been covered up for several weeks. It was revealed in an
Israeli newspaper, Ma'ariv, but inquiries about the story last night were met by a wall of "no comments" from the Australian Government. The newspaper speculated there might be some connection with last year's scandal in which two alleged agents of the Israeli spy service, Mossad, were arrested in New Zealand after they were caught trying to fraudulently obtain passports. One of the official duties of the Canberra diplomat was to visit the two Israelis in prison in New Zealand, to provide them with diplomatic services, the paper said. The pair had also spent considerable time in Australia, where there was speculation that they might have been on a similar mission. A source close to the Israeli cabinet told the Herald the reason for the effective expulsion must be serious, given the friendly relations between the two countries and the scheduled tour of Australia by the Israeli President, Moshe Katsav, early next month. According to the Ma'ariv report, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade summoned a senior embassy official to a meeting at which it requested the immediate recall of the consul. If Israel did not withdraw its diplomat voluntarily, steps would be taken to declare him persona non grata and to initiate proceedings for his deportation. In response, the Israeli Foreign Ministry instructed the diplomat to pack his bags and return home immediately - before the affair burgeoned into a full-blown diplomatic crisis. Ma'ariv said Australia refused to state the reason for the "expulsion" and quoted a senior Israeli Foreign Ministry official as saying: "It is a complete mystery. We have no idea why the Australians demanded his replacement. We do not even have a clue." It quoted Foreign Ministry sources as saying the consul was in a state of shock and that he was a professional and devoted worker. But a Foreign Ministry spokesman told the Herald that a diplomat had returned from Australia "a couple of weeks ago" for reasons that were known to both sides but which would not be revealed. Michael Ronen, the director of the Pacific department in the Israeli Foreign Ministry, said the diplomat was the second secretary, with responsibility for consular affairs. But he said: "This issue has no impact on Israel's excellent relations with Australia." A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra refused to confirm or deny the report but admitted that "if the story is made public, the line is no comment". Australia has become increasingly close to Israel in recent years. Last year it was the only country, apart from two tiny Pacific states, to vote with Israel and the US against a United Nations resolution on Israel's controversial security barrier in the occupied West Bank. A spokesman for the Foreign Minsister, Alexander Downer, said he was aware of the report but would not comment. Mossad agents have previously been caught using Canadian passports to secure entry to Jordan, where they were allegedly attempting to stage an assassination. New Zealand passports are in high demand throughout the world because they are usually accepted without the need for a visa. New Zealand has demanded an apology from Israel
but is yet to receive one."

"Russian government agency has sent an official warning to the extremist Russian Orthodox newspaper "Rus Pravoslavnaya" that last month published a stridently anti-Semitic letter signed by 19 Duma members calling for a ban on Jewish organizations in Russia. The agency charges incitement of ethnic hatred, according to a January 28 report by the daily "Kommersant." Founded in 1993, "Rus Pravoslavnaya" is published in St. Petersburg, and it generally reflects the views of extremist elements in the Russian Orthodox Church whose hierarchy has denounced the anti-Semitic letter. The warning was issued by the Federal Service for Supervising the Observance of Laws in the Media. It characterized the letter as containing "multiple negative statements against Jews and Judaism which were aimed at the incitement of ethnic and religious hatred and the humiliation of their ethnic dignity, which is inadmissible under current legislation." If "Rus Pravoslavnaya," whose past record of publishing anti-Semitic articles has been ignored by the Federal Service until now, receives another warning, the Federal Service will have the right to take the paper's editors to court and ask to shut it down. The Russian Jewish Congress has announced its intention to pursue legal remedies against both "Rus Pravoslavnaya" and the authors of the letter, according to a February 1 report by the Sova Information-Analytical Center. The Congress plans to appeal to the Prosecutor's Office to bring charges of incitement. However, members of the Duma enjoy immunity from prosecution."

Vet's `final solution' analogy condemned,

"The Jewish community is outraged by a statement made yesterday at a legislative committee hearing that compared a pit bull ban to the Nazis' "final solution" to exterminate the Jews during World War II. The Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) has called on veterinarian Mary Yett of Beaver Creek Animal Hospital to retract her comments and apologize to the victims of the Nazi Holocaust. "It is unbelievable that someone in a position of Dr. Yett would make such an unacceptable analogy between animals and the murder of 6 million men, women and children," CJC CEO Bernie Farber told the Toronto Star yesterday.Yett made the comments in Brantford while speaking to the legislative committee reviewing Bill 132 on banning pit bulls in Ontario. A written submission by Yett read: "Classifying all dogs with a similar appearance as inherently dangerous is analogous to racism." The statement goes on to say: "A society driven by illogical fear and panic does not even come close to our Canadian ideal of fairness, tolerance and a peaceful society. It is instead eerily reminiscent of fascism and the `final solution.' Politicians who hype the fear of pit bulls to the media are self-serving at best and dangerous in their own right at worst." Yett could not be reached by the Star for comment. Farber said referring to the "final solution" in this context is particularly hurtful coming on the heels of the 60th anniversary last week of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp. "Any reasonable person would be disgusted by what she said ... the decision to use this kind of hyperbole turns people completely against her position."

"Secretary of State Kevin Shelley resigned Friday amid investigations into his handling of federal election funds, questionable campaign contributions and bad behavior. Shelley, 49, is leaving his $131,250-a-year post before having to testify later this month at a legislative audit committee hearing about his handling of millions of dollars in federal elections funds. "I know I have done nothing wrong in the eyes of the law," Shelley said during a late afternoon news conference outside his San Francisco home, his wife, Dominique, at his side ... Shelley, the son of former San Francisco Mayor and U.S. Rep. Jack Shelley, was once one of California's rising political stars. His move paves the way for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, to name a replacement for the Democrat ... The state Board of Personnel also criticized some of his office hiring practices as possibly illegal and a throwback to the "spoils system." Shelley likewise faced federal, state and local investigations for accepting $125,000 in campaign funds from recipients of state grant funds for a San Francisco neighborhood center that was never built. A December state audit, which State Auditor Elaine Howle called one of the more serious reports issued by her office, charged Shelley with poor management of the HAVA funds and poor oversight of staff and consultants ... Howle found that Shelley paid consultants for federally funded voter outreach that included attending partisan Democrat events and fund-raisers and promoting Shelley's political profile. Until the revelations last year, he had been considered a future candidate for governor ... He also denied allegations of an abusive workplace and accusations that he made sexually charged remarks to women. His office similarly rebutted the personnel board report, saying it overstated improper hiring issues ... Born into an Irish Catholic political family, Shelley worked for former Democratic Congressman Phil Burton before being elected in 1990 to the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors and then to the state Assembly in 1996. "When the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco reflects on the awesome depth of commitment it took to build our beautiful new home, we proudly recognize the crucial – and unheralded – contribution of Secretary of State Kevin Shelley. Growing up in San Francisco, Kevin Shelley’s personal connection to the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco began many years ago, when he played basketball in the old gymnasium. With friends and teammates from all neighborhoods, and as the son of former Mayor and U.S. Congressman Jack Shelley, Kevin was raised with a deep appreciation and affinity for the diverse communities of our wonderful city. Once elected to public office, first as a San Francisco Supervisor and then as a member and Majority Leader of the California State Assembly, Kevin Shelley became a tireless advocate for the JCCSF. When the building project began, the JCCSF had important and challenging work to build strong coalitions of support before demolishing the old, beloved building. At the same time, and perhaps most critically, then-California State Assembly Member Shelley used his considerable political savvy to advocate for state financial support for the Center at a crucial time for the project. Kevin Shelley secured an initial grant award of $1 million for the JCCSF in 2000. The state also awarded an additional grant of $750,000 in 2001, spearheaded by then-Assembly Member Carole Migden. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Kevin Shelley and his colleagues in Sacramento for literally laying the foundation for the new JCCSF. Kevin Shelley understood, with characteristic prescience, that the new Jewish Community Center of San Francisco could and would embody the dreams of all who had come through its doors for generations. With his heartfelt and impassioned personal participation, the local community – as well as Shelley’s colleagues in Sacramento – came to share his commitment, understanding what the new Jewish Community Center of San Francisco might mean to them in years to come."

Documents reveal CIA recruited five of Eichmann's associates,

"Five of Adolph Eichmann's Nazi assistants were recruited and employed by the Central Intelligence Agency after World War II, according to recently declassified intelligence documents. The information came to light after a lengthy battle waged by the non-profit group, The National Security Archive, whose goal is to expose government documents under the framework of the Freedom of Information Act. The newly-revealed documents are based on internal investigations in the CIA's history department. The agency has steadfastly refused to make the documents public for fear they would cause embarassment. The revelations cast a negative light not only on American intelligence activity but also the U.S. Army's conduct in Germany at the conclusion of the war. The military made efforts to recruit members of the SS and the Gestapo into its ranks despite simultaenously waging a campaign of de-Nazification over vanquished Germany, a process which included arresting and trying Nazi war criminals. The documents also reveal in great detail CIA efforts to recruit Reinhard Gehlen, who was the Wermacht's chief intelligence officer for the eastern front during the war. The recruitment evolved into a new intelligence sub-organization known as "Gehlen's Organization," which served as the basis for what would later become West Germany's foreign intelligence service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND). According to the new findings, Gehlen's Organization employed a number of Gestapo and SS officials. Gehlen and his senior associates secretly operated out of a building with the knowledge of the American occupation forces."
