THIS WEEK'S JEWISH NEWS

POSTED February 4, 2005

[Say it, for God's sakes! This criminal is Jewish! Why would someone threaten Christians over their morality about Israel (proposed Presbyterian divestment from apartheid Israel) UNLESS the kook was a Jew? This is the heart of the story. The Anti-Defamation League and other Jewish/Zionist groups create the deepening climate for such Jewish "hatred." Jewish fascism will always remain a phantom and it will never be stopped unless it is named.]
New York man charged with mail threats to PC(USA). FBI Arrest Made on Thursday,
by Alexa Smith, Presbyterian News, February 3, 2005
"A young New York man was arrested today and charged with sending a letter to denominational officials threatening Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations with arson. Jeffrey A. Winters, 25, of Queens, NY, was arrested “without incident” after a search of his apartment, according to the Kentucky Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He is charged with interstate communication of a threat to injure another person. If convicted, Winters could be sentenced to five years in jail and fined up to $250,000. The arrest is tied to an anonymous handwritten letter received at the Presbyterian Center on Nov. 9 threatening “arson attacks against Presbyterian Churches with people inside” and accusing the denomination of anti-Semitism. Several menacing letters have arrived in Louisville, including one this week. Late this afternoon, the denomination’s stated clerk, the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick told reporters: “We are grateful that this threat against our churches has been eased and appreciate the work of the FBI in this matter. At the same time, we need to be in prayer for Mr. Winters and for the peace and well being of Israelis, Palestinians and all the people of the Middle East.” Kirkpatrick also released a letter to synods and presbyteries. Although no PC(USA) churches were harmed despite the threats, Kirkpatrick said that congregations in New York City and others throughout the northeast were anxious after the contents of the November letter were made public. Although the letter had no return address, it bore a Queens, NY, postmark. Replete with a swastika, it read, “I promise violence against Presbyterian Churches -- They will go up in flames, bet your ass that’s a terrorist threat.” It set a Nov. 15 deadline for the church to “reverse” its Middle East policies “or else.” In early July, the denomination’s top legislative body authorized church agencies to pressure corporations that earn profits from the Israeli occupation of the West Bank --or from violence by Israelis or Palestinians – to change their business practices. It endorsed targeted divestment from those multi-national companies as a last resort."

[Jewish/Zionist spying and corruption is going on everywhere. Come on, FBI! What's going on with your investigation of AIPAC as an illegal spying operation? Now why on earth would the Australian government be interested in hushing up its expulsion of a spying Israeli diplomat, unless the Jewish Lobby holds Australia tooin its iron grip? Politics is a sordid escapade everywhere, and Jews are at the heart of it.]
Israeli envoy expelled: report,
The Age (Australia), February 5, 2005
"Australia secretly forced a senior Israeli diplomat to leave the country, and neither Israel nor Australia wanted to comment about the matter, according to a newspaper report. The Sydney morning Herald said the effective expulsion of the Canberra-based diplomat - described as a consul in Israel - was covered up for several weeks. But it said the matter had come to light in a report in the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv. It said inquiries about the story were met by no comments from the Australian government. The Ma'ariv newspaper speculated there might be some connection with last year's scandal in which two alleged agents of the Israeli spy service, Mossad, were arrested in New Zealand. The arrest came after they were caught trying to fraudulently obtain passports. The Sydney Morning Herald said it had been told by a source close to the Israeli cabinet that the reason for the incident must have been serious, given the friendly relations between the two countries."

[The White House has become Jewish Criminal Central. Yukos is one of the Jewish-owned companies that bled Russia after the fall of communism. Here Jewish senator Tom Lantos invites Jews on the run from looting Russia to partake in a little Zionist backscratching in the heart of Judeocentric America. Yukos Fugitives Feted in U.S,
by By Valeria Korchagina, Moscow Times, February 4, 2005
"
Two of the country's top fugitives arrived in Washington to attend Thursday's prayer breakfast with President George W. Bush, defying an international arrest warrant put out by Russian prosecutors. After receiving assurances from U.S. officials that they would not be extradited, Mikhail Brudno and Vladimir Dubov traveled to Washington on Wednesday, sources familiar with the visit said. Brudno and Dubov, who fled to Israel more than a year ago, are shareholders in oil major Yukos and face similar charges as former company CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who was imprisoned in October 2003. The two oligarchs, now Israeli citizens, were invited to Washington by Republican Representative Tom Lantos, a prominent critic of Kremlin policy, to attend a National Prayer Breakfast and meet with government officials. "There is significant interest in us," Brudno said, speaking by phone from Washington on Thursday. "[U.S. politicians] see us as sources of information on what is going on in Russia, with business in Russia and with Yukos." "Mikhail Khodorkovsky used to come and speak here every year. But now, since that is not possible, we decided to accept the invitation," Brudno said. Leonid Nevzlin, another exiled Yukos shareholder wanted in Russia, was also invited, a source in the U.S. Congress said Thursday. Brudno and Dubov had a private session with Lantos and were scheduled to meet with officials from the State Department and National Security Council. All three men fled Russia after authorities apprehended Khodorkovsky and his partner Platon Lebedev and issued warrants for their arest. The international game of hide-and-seek took a twist on Monday, when Brudno and Dubov appeared on an Interpol wanted list as suspects sought for extradition to face fraud charges in Russia. As a result, Brudno and Dubov delayed their trip to Washington by a day, said a source close to Yukos' parent company, Group Menatep ... They have been assured that the U.S. government will not act on the Russian Interpol notice." Interpol notices to its 182 member police organizations are nonbinding, leaving a nation's authorities to choose whether or not to proceed with a detention. Brudno said that he was planning to return "home" to Israel. The Prosecutor General's Office, which forwarded the request for the men's detention to Interpol, declined to comment on the U.S. authorities' decision not to act on the warrant. Russia's track record with extraditing suspects has been patchy. Authorities have failed to extradite exiled tycoons Vladimir Gusinsky, last known to live in Spain, and Boris Berezovsky, who resides in London. Chechen separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev, who received political asylum in Britain, has also been out of reach of Russian courts."

Chabad Prize to Putin Spurring Debate Over Russian's Actions,
By Eric J. Greenberg, [Jewish] Forward, February 4, 2005
"Just before the sun set over Auschwitz on January 27, ending the international ceremonies that marked the 60th anniversary of the notorious death camp's liberation, President Vladimir Putin of Russia stepped forward to receive a medal from Rabbi Berel Lazar, one of the two men who claims the title of chief rabbi of Russia. Lazar, a Lubavitch Hasid known for his close ties to Putin's Kremlin, awarded Putin the so-called Salvation medal as a symbol of "the Jewish people's gratitude" to Russia for liberating the camp. Lazar told a Moscow press conference beforehand that the medal would be given in the future "to people who saved and hid Jews during the war." A similar medal was given to the president of Poland, Aleksandr Kwasniewski, for hosting the ceremony. In the days since, as Israeli and Jewish leaders have scrambled to distance themselves from the medal, Lazar's gesture has come to symbolize in some eyes the growing international debate over Putin's real intentions. Putin is
under fire for growing signs of autocracy at home, warming toward radical
regimes in Syria and Iran and a slow response to mounting Russian
antisemitism ... In the last week, however, Putin has come under fire for a series of actions — and omissions — that critics say belie his words. Eastern European
leaders complained that he failed at Auschwitz to acknowledge the Soviet
tyranny that replaced the Nazis. Numerous observers noted tartly that he was the only speaker at the camp to omit any explicit mention of Jews. Critics at home complain that he has failed to speak out directly against a recent
antisemitic statement by a group of Russian politicians, leaving it to other
government ministries to respond. Meanwhile, Israel and its allies are voicing alarm over an apparent shift in Moscow's Middle East policy. Putin confirmed to reporters in Krakow that Russia intended to proceed with a planned missile sale to Syria, despite Israeli protests. This week Iran and Russia reached an agreement on disposal of spent nuclear fuel, clearing the way for Russia to fire up Iran's first nuclear power plant. Israeli and Western analysts have been watching Putin's foreign policy with mounting distress for the last year or so. Partly as a result of the expansion of Nato and the European Union into Eastern Europe, Russia has been growing increasingly defensive and suspicious toward the West.
Moreover, analysts say, the Iraq war has driven a wedge between the Putin
and Bush administrations and spurred Russia to seek its own Middle East
alliances. Putin's appearance at Auschwitz did little to ease suspicions. Omitting mention of Jews, he focused on Russia's wartime suffering and on the role of the Red Army in liberating Eastern Europe from the Nazis ... At home, meanwhile, Putin "does just enough to keep the Jewish community and the international community off his back," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "What is missing is the will of his government to use the instruments of law and order to show these antisemitic incidents are unacceptable." Lazar, the Moscow Lubavitcher, was named chief rabbi of Russia in May 2000 at a gathering of Russian Lubavitch representatives, who do not recognize the long-serving chief rabbi chosen in the 1980s, Adolph Shayevich, a Modern Orthodox rabbi. Since then Lazar and his allies have grown increasingly close to Putin's circle, while Shayevich and his allies are often identified with Putin's democratic opponents."

Israeli ambassador protests ads. Diplomat says Mountfield ad fosters anti-Semitism,
by Dinah A. Spritzer, The Prague Post (Czech Republic), February 3, 2005
"A television spot parodying an Orthodox Jew trying to get the lowest price on Mountfield gardening tools led Israeli Ambassador Arthur Avnon to protest what he called the commercial's "anti-Semitic character" to the company's CEO. "The commercial describes Jewish people in a way that the worst anti-Semites would describe them: as greedy," Avnon said. His protest was successful, with the company shortening its campaign in response to his request, according to Mountfield CEO Ivan Drbohlav. Avnon said that during a Jan. 18 meeting with Drbohlav at Mountfield's Mnichovice, Central Bohemia, headquarters, Drbohlav denied the ad was anti-Semitic and instead said it highlights Jews' innate business instincts. Drbohlav nonetheless promised that the ad, running since January on all four Czech television stations during prime time, would finish in February instead of showing through April as originally planned, Avnon said in an interview. The portrayal of a Jewish caricature, a common practice during Nazism, has raised the ire of several prominent Czech Jews, although they have yet to publicly voice their objections. Especially disturbing to some viewers was that the commercial was being aired at the same time that Czech officials were marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The ad, which airs through Feb. 7 according to a company source, shows comedian Zdenek Izer feebly disguised as an Orthodox Jew with a black hat, long beard and black robes. He rubs his hands together with apparent greed, asking the well-known Mountfield mascot Beda Travnicek, "What's all this trumf stuff about?" referring to the trump slot on the company's carnival-like wheel of fortune that provides discounts to shoppers. The Jewish character repeatedly wins discounts from the wheel, spun by the mascot. When Travnicek complains about the Jew's success, he responds, "Don't give me that" (nechaj toho) in stereotypical Czech Jewish slang of the 1930s. Leaving the store with his greatly discounted chain saw, the Jewish bargain-hunter tells the mascot that his discount is "no big deal," but waves the chain saw around with apparent pride over his success in getting a markdown. He then sticks his tongue out to the audience, suggesting that he has duped the mascot and just snagged the deal of a lifetime. Before their meeting, Avnon wrote to Drbohlav that the 30-second ad uses a classical anti-Semitic stereotype. "There is a strong possibility that this anti-Semitism will further strengthen anti-Semitic prejudices in people who already hold this belief, and that young people may be wrongly influenced by this message," Avnon penned. Drbohlav brushed off any suggestion that the portrayal of a Jew as a discount seeker had any negative implications. "The idea of the commercial was to show the beautiful Jewish cleverness. That is why we opted for an Orthodox Jew, obviously the symbol of a person who behaves like a good businessman," he said, adding that he has great admiration for Jews and has studied their culture and history. After meeting with Avnon, Drbohlav said the ambassador convinced him that the ad could be misused by "the 5 percent of the population that might have a tendency towards anti-Semitic behavior. But I still say that 95 percent of the Czech population is not like that and instead sees the Orthodox Jews as highly intelligent and gets the humor of the commercial." No intent to harm Like Avnon, Johanka Lomova, spokeswoman for the Forum Against Anti-Semitism, Prague, found the ad to foster negative stereotypes. "Jews in our past have been described as strangers, usurers and conspirators, which is part of the classical anti-Semitic stereotype deeply rooted in the minds of the general public," Lomova said. She added that the commercial is "very dangerous because it legitimizes these stereotypes, making people less tolerant and more lax towards violent attacks."

[Rebel punk rocker gets walked over by a Jewish "advertising big-wig" -- THAT should be this story's headline, sign of the times. The ideology of Punk Rock was supposed to dispose of popular convention. Apparently, the exeption to that is JEWISH convention, which is sacred. If you want to survive in the entertainment business in any form, you are required to kiss Jewish ass. Jews run the music industry, including "punk." Hey, Billy Idol. If you're a "punk," and you don't care if you offend everyone else on the planet, why should you give a damn about what Jews think? Unless they own you. The absolute mark of the true rebel, the true visionary, is rebellion against Jewish hegemony. In 2005, everything else pales in comparison. Here, "punk rocker" Billy Idol squirms, melts into putty, wallows down, barks on all fours, and swallows the pee of today's Jewish Master. Redemption necessitates that he burns the Israeli flag at his next concert.]
PUNK ICON IDOL UPSETS JEWISH TV HOST WITH SWASTIKA COMMENTS,
Contact Music, February 3, 2005
"
BILLY IDOL was left tongue-tied on a US TV chat show when he boasted to the Jewish host he used to wear a swastika. Idol was asked to comment about British royal PRINCE HARRY's decision to wear the Nazi symbol on his arm at a recent fancy dress party, when he guested on advertising bigwig DONNIE DEUTSCH's new chat show THE BIG IDEA on Tuesday (01FEB05). But when Idol tried to play down Harry's big mistake and said he too wore a swastika when he was a rebellious teenager, Deutsch took offence. Idol said, "When we were punk rockers we wore the swastika like the Hell's Angels." And angry Deutsch cut him short, stating, "I've got a big problem with that, man. Billy, I've got a big problem with that." Red-faced Idol tried to save face as Deutsch desperately tried to cut to a commercial break. He rejoined, "I'm not saying, 'Do that now...' I never wore that (swastika) after I was 21 or something. We found out how terrible the sign of the swastika was. We didn't realise. "We were young kids and all we wanted to do was p**s off the people who fought in the war, who were teaching us. It's one of the most worst symbols in the world." Deutsch insisted Idol admit he made a mistake wearing the Nazi symbol, even when he was a teenager. Idol stated, "It's totally a mistake. It's the most hateful symbol in the world. I hate it."

Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia in Partnership with Delaware County Library System Announces Community Education Program on Jewish Literature,
PR Newswire, February 3, 2005
"The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia-Delaware County Region, in partnership with the Delaware County Library System, is announcing the debut of a reading and book discussion program that explores Jewish literature and culture with local scholars. This educational series, titled, "Lets Talk About It: Jewish Literature," will begin on February 27, 2005, at the Memorial Library of Radnor Township, Wayne, Pa., and is available to library members. "Exploring Jewish literature with local scholars is a unique adult education opportunity for the entire community, not just synagogues," said Shelley Rappaport, director of the Delaware County Region of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. "The 'Lets Talk About It: Jewish Literature' program is an exciting new way to discover beautiful literature and enhance cultural understanding." The "Lets Talk About It: Jewish Literature" program was developed by the American Library Association in 2004. It seeks to expand the audience for Jewish literature nationwide. Participating libraries receive a grant from ALA to support training, program materials, and participating local scholars. The Delaware County Library System is one of 34 libraries nationally to receive the grant, and the only one in the Philadelphia area."

[Severe omission below: Ayn Rand the Self-Obsessed Money-Suck Goddess was not just a "Russian immigrant," she was also Jewish. Of course.]
The evolution of Ayn Rand,
by Steve Chapman, Washington Times, February 2, 2005
"Has Ayn Rand gone mainstream? The radical champion of individualism and capitalism, who died in 1982, is no longer an exotic taste. Her image has adorned a U.S. postage stamp. Her ideas have been detected in a new mass-market animated comedy film, "The Incredibles." And today on the 100th anniversary of her birth, there will be a Rand commemoration at the Library of Congress — an odd site for a ceremony honoring a fierce anti-statist. In her day, Miss Rand was at odds with almost every prevailing American social attitude. She infuriated liberals by preaching economic laissez-faire and lionizing titans of business. She appalled conservatives by rejecting religion in any form while celebrating, she said, "sexual enjoyment as an end in itself." But her novels found countless readers. "The Fountainhead," published in 1943, and "Atlas Shrugged," which followed in 1957, are still in print. In 1991, when the Book of the Month Club polled Americans asking what book had most influenced their lives, "Atlas Shrugged" finished second only to the Bible. In all, Miss Rand's books have sold some 22 million copies and continue selling more than half a million a year ... Miss Rand, a Russian immigrant, saw herself harking back to the Enlightenment values of reason, limited government and personal liberty that fueled the American Revolution. "The United States," she declared, "was the first moral society in history." Her novels were derided by critics, who saw them as interminable philosophical diatribes disguised as melodrama. What she regarded as thoroughgoing consistency struck many readers as overbearing dogmatism. Her political ideas attracted only a fringe following. Outside a tiny band of true believers, few people counted themselves as disciples of Ayn Rand. But many people absorbed much of her thinking and incorporated it into their worldviews. Public figures as diverse as Hillary Clinton, Clarence Thomas and Cal Ripken have cited her influence, on top of millions of other unfamous people. In time, her work bore fruit. By the mid-1970s, wage-and-price controls had wrecked the economy, in perfect accord with Miss Rand's predictions. Her view of capitalism not as a necessary evil but a moral good helped turn public opinion toward free markets, opening the way for the Reagan Revolution ... That's just one illustration of how her influence went beyond economics and political theory. In her eyes, there was no greater good than each person's integrity and self-fulfillment. One of her essay collections had the surprising title, "The Virtue of Selfishness." Looking back, it's hard to recapture how jarring that phrase was a generation ago, when altruism and self-sacrifice were seen as the central elements of an exemplary life. Today, Americans take it for granted that they are entitled to live for their own happiness, without apology."

[Not an original theme. We can help this "first Jewish studies student" at Purdue with a little expansion of her subject: say, Jews and sexual degradation. In any case, she's obviously hit the right theme to kick off the Jewish Studies program, but she should be passing out condoms, not chocolate, for her speech at Hillel.]
Student gives speech regarding Jewish attitudes toward sex,
by Craig Davision, The Exponent (Purdue University), February 4, 2005
"The first and only Jewish studies major at Purdue will give a speech Monday night. The topic: Sex, chocolate and Judaism. Dara Hill, a senior in the College of Liberal Arts who is also majoring in religious studies, will give her speech after a 6:30 dinner at the Hillel Foundation. The dinner will include foods such as spaghetti, garlic bread and, of course, chocolate. Hill said the speech will compare traditional Jewish attitudes with more modern ones towards sex. She also added that it was not her idea for the title of the speech, so she takes no responsibility for the kind of chocolate served. Nonetheless, she will address the issue of chocolate as an aphrodisiac. "The idea of Judaism looks at all aspects of human experience, and (the human experience) definitely includes sex," she said. Her goal is to address the issues that real people, and real college students, face — including topics such as sexual identity and homosexuality. Hill also said that there is something in the speech for non-Jews. "In an area like this, which is relatively conservative, it’s nice to get other perspectives," she said. "The things I’ll be talking about are relevant because they’re all part of the same heritage."

The 2005 Sierra Series. Sierra Club Puppeteer—Long-Suspected Scandal Revealed,
by Brenda Walker, VDare, Februar 2, 2005
"
Just what is the cost to buy off the Sierra Club—once the most respected environmental organization in America? A low nine figure sum does the job according to the Los Angeles Times in its story last fall about David Gelbaum, one of the key funders of the 112-year-old environmental organization. ["The Man Behind the Land" by Kenneth R. Weiss, Oct. 17, 2004] A nice round $100 million was enough for Executive Director Carl Pope to toss the principles of honesty, democracy and conservation out the window. Many of us involved in the grassroots effort to restore population sanity to the Sierra Club were suspicious that the mysterious $100 million in donations might have immigration strings attached. After all, the 1996 switch from common sense to political correctness was an abrupt change from the earlier position that the Club should work to "bring about the stabilization of the population first of the United States and then of the world." Our suspicions were correct. The LA Times article revealed that shadowy funder Gelbaum donated generously on condition that the Sierra Club not address immigration as an environmental issue. Said Gelbaum, "I did tell [Sierra Club Executive Director] Carl Pope in 1994 or 1995 that if they ever came out anti-immigration, they would never get a dollar from me." The story continued: Gelbaum, who reads the Spanish-language newspaper La Opinión and is married to a Mexican American, said his views on immigration were shaped long ago by his grandfather, Abraham, a watchmaker who had come to America to escape persecution of Jews in Ukraine before World War I. I asked, 'Abe, what do you think about all of these Mexicans coming here?' ‘Gelbaum said. ‘Abe didn't speak English that well. He said, 'I came here. How can I tell them not to come?'’"I cannot support an organization that is anti-immigration. It would dishonor the memory of my grandparents." Gelbaum's reasoning is patently anti-environmental. It assumes that this country can absorb millions of new foreign residents annually who come with dreams of American level consumption. Thoughtful conservationists balance past values versus a future reality of a population explosion most could not imagine a hundred years ago. What if Grandaddy Abe had been a slave-owner, deeply worried about who would pick the cotton come emancipation? And surely Gelbaum's grandfather could not have foreseen the invasion of millions of illegals, largely from Mexico. And if safety for Jews is still an issue as it was for Gelbaum's Ukrainian forebears, then the "strongly anti-Semitic" views of 44 percent of foreign-born Hispanics should be of great concern. Gelbaum may be unwittingly supporting the increase of anti-Semitism in America which his grandfather sought to escape."

Anti-Semitism on the Rise in America -- ADL Survey on Anti-Semitic Attitudes Reveals 17 Percent of Americans Hold "Hardcore" Beliefs,
Anti-Defamation League, June 11, 2002
"
A nationwide survey released today by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) shows an increase in the number of Americans with anti-Semitic attitudes, reversing a ten-year decline and raising concerns that "an undercurrent of Jewish hatred persists in America." The national poll of 1,000 American adults conducted April 26 through May 6, 2002 found that 17% of Americans - or about 35 million adults - hold views about Jews that are "unquestionably anti-Semitic." Previous surveys commissioned by ADL over the last decade had indicated that anti-Semitism was in decline. A survey of attitudes four years ago found that the number of Americans with hardcore anti-Semitic beliefs had dropped from 20% in 1992, to 12% in 1998 ...One of the most important findings of ADL's 2002 Survey of Anti-Semitism in America concerns Hispanic Americans, one of the most significant and fastest growing segments of the American population, in which the poll found an extraordinary gap between those born in the United States and those born abroad. The survey revealed that while 44% of foreign-born Hispanics hold hardcore anti-Semitic beliefs, 20% of Hispanic Americans born in the U.S. fall into the same category. The anti-Semitic propensities of foreign-born Hispanics were significantly above the national average. Meanwhile, the number of African-Americans with strong anti-Semitic beliefs continued to hold steady at 35%. "Religious background has always played a role in determining one's beliefs about Jews. So it is not surprising yet very distressing that one of the fastest growing segments in America holds strongly anti-Semitic views," said Mr. Foxman ... Anti-Semitic attitudes are up; the most widely held stereotype is that "Jews have too much power in the U.S." The poll found 17% of Americans were "most anti-Semitic" in their views, while another 35% were in the "middle" category, holding neither prejudiced nor unprejudiced views, but not completely prejudice-free in their attitudes toward Jews ... [N]ew stereotypes about "Jewish power" in the U.S. have replaced many of the classical ethical stereotypes previously attributed to Jewish Americans. In the 2002 survey, 20% of Americans agreed with the statement "Jews have too much power in the U.S. today." Nearly three-quarters (72%) of those in the most anti-Semitic category believe that Jews have too much power."

The Odd Couple,
The Economist, February 3, 2005
"George Bush is having an intellectual love affair.“INTELLECTUAL” is hardly the first word that springs to mind when you contemplate George Bush. Mr Bush glided through the best education that money can buy without acquiring much in the way of “book learning”. At school, he formed a stick-ball team called the Nads (providing him and his pals with a chance to shout “Go Nads”); at Yale, he was famous for doing the alligator, a dance that involved falling on the floor and rolling around; at Harvard Business School, he wore cowboy boots and chewed tobacco, a strutting provocation to the lefty penseurs who dominated Harvard Yard. Yet for the past few months this paragon of good ol' boy common sense has been infatuated with a book about an abstract noun by a Jewish intellectual. Mr Bush recommends Natan Sharansky's “The Case for Democracy: The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror” (Public Affairs) to almost everyone he meets (including Condoleezza Rice, who mentioned the book during her opening remarks at her Senate confirmation hearing). Nine days after winning re-election he spent over an hour discussing the book in the White House with Mr Sharansky himself. The meeting must have sounded extraordinary, given Mr Sharansky's thick Russian accent and Mr Bush's Texan drawl. But by all accounts they got on famously. Why is Mr Bush so infatuated with Mr Sharansky? Certainly not out of a desire to restore his favour with America's erstwhile allies. Mr Sharansky, a minister without portfolio in Ariel Sharon's Likud government, has a growing penchant for siding with the hard right. In two recent incidents he rallied with Jewish settlers to oppose Mr Sharon's plan for withdrawing from Gaza and criticised the recent Palestinian elections for not being “truly free”. It is hard to think of anybody who is more likely to set off alarm bells in the chancelleries of Old Europe. Mr Bush loves “The Case for Democracy” for the simple reason that he likes what it has to say. “I want you to read a book,” he told John Dickerson of Time magazine. “It will give you a sense of what I'm talking about.” Conspiracy theorists, not least in Israel, are already tracing the way that the evil Likudniks spread their influence. (A clue: Mr Sharansky ran into Dick Cheney at an American Enterprise Institute retreat in Beaver Creek, Colorado in June 2002, and had a long conversation with him. A few days later Mr Bush gave a speech telling the Palestinians that they needed to embrace democracy.) But this is less a case of presidential manipulation than of two minds thinking alike."

Singer Kinky Friedman begins run for Texas governor,
by Ralph Blumenthal, Seattle Post-Intelligencer,
"As threatened, Kinky Friedman, the gadfly country singer and humorist, declared for Texas governor yesterday as an independent candidate in the 2006 race, saying, "The choice should be something besides paper or plastic." Appearing live from the Alamo in San Antonio on the Don Imus television and radio show broadcast nationally on MSNBC, Friedman, 60, said that although "a fool and his money are soon elected," he had high hopes of beating the Republican incumbent, Rick Perry, who "appears to be more interested in ironing his shirts than ironing out the problems of Texas." "I'm a Jew," said Friedman, who provided a rabbi for an invocation, "trust me; I'll hire good people." He said he had received 37 write-in votes in the Iraqi election. Luis Saenz, director of Texans for Rick Perry, responded that "Kinky has the potential to enliven the debate" but he added, "It appears that the Democrats are not the only ones who have been smoking something." Clad in his trademark black cowboy outfit and hat and chewing on a cigar, Friedman, whose given name is Richard, said he had chosen the Alamo backdrop "to wake up the great slumbering giant of Texas independence" and change the state's position as "No.1 in executions" and near the bottom in financing public education. He said he was not anti-death penalty -- "just anti the wrong guy getting executed." "I come with no strings attached," he said. "The only two things that influence me are my fellow Texans and my heart." Friedman said in an interview in 2003 that he hoped to avenge his 1986 defeat for justice of the peace in Kerrville, his hometown, where he runs an animal rescue ranch and writes mystery novels and a column for Texas Monthly magazine. Statement by M. Shahid Alam February 2, 2005
*O'Reilly's Fatwah on "Un-American" Professors: FoxNews Puts Me In Its Crosshairs*
I published an essay, "America and Islam: Seeking Parallels," http://counterpunch.org/shahid12292004.html in Counterpunch on December 29, 2004. A day later, I began to receive nasty and threatening emails, all at once. These were orchestrated by a
www.littlegreenfootballs.com. Shortly thereafter, other right-wing websites got into act, posting excerpts from the essay; these included jihadwatch.org, campuswatch.org, frontpagemag.com, freerepublic.com, etc. The messages posted on these websites were equally vicious, and some of them, containing explicit death threats, were 'kindly' forwarded to me. What did I say in this essay? I made two points. First, that the 9-11 attacks were an Islamist insurgency: the attackers believe that they are fighting--as the Americans did, in the 1770s--for their freedom and dignity against a foreign occupation/control of their lands. Secondly, I argue that these attacks were the result of a massive political failure of Muslims to resist their tyrannies locally. It was a mistake to attack the US. I followed the first essay with a second one, "Testing Free Speech In America," http://counterpunch.org/shahid01012005.html where I elaborate on the points I had made earlier. This too was published in Counterpunch.Org on Jan 1/2, 2005. The emails to me and the University continued for another two weeks, eventually tapering off. In the meanwhile, I was speaking to people at the ACLU, Boston, and the ADC, Boston. On the suggestion of the ACLU, I contacted the campus police and the police in my hometown to let them know about the death threats posted against me. I had a feeling this was not the end of the matter. So yesterday, February 1, I received an email from Fox News asking for a TV interview; they were producing a program "on me." At this point, I spoke to people at ACLU who advised me against going on the program. I received the same advice from other friends. I wrote back to Fox saying I could not do the interview but would be glad to answer any questions. They did not take me up on my offer. Clearly, this would not help them in their designs against me. It appears that Bill O'Reilly is doing a series on 'unAmerican' professors on US campuses. Last night, my wife tells me, he did a piece on Ward Churchill. Tonight will be my turn. I expect he will make all kinds of outlandish accusations that will resonate well with the left- and Muslim-hating members of his audience. This will generate calls and emails to Northeastern and to me containing threats, calls for firing me, and threats to withhold donations. I am not sure how well NU will stand up against this barrage. If we can generate a matching volume of emails, letters and call to NU contact info listed above] supporting my right to free speech, it might be helpful. What else can we do?"

The Ball Is in Europe's Court,
by Oren Medicks, Kibush, January 2005
"The result is a new large block [in Israel] that may be called moderate-right wing. This block represents a great majority of the Israeli public who believe strongly that Israel needs to separate itself from the Palestinians unilaterally, finally consolidating the conquests of the 1967 war and keeping as much land as possible, under the formula “maximum territory – minimum Palestinians”. This formula is the basis of the consensus, and is shared by left and right alike, from most of the leftist Meretz party to a large proportion of the right wing Likud party. There are approximately 20% who still maintain “all the territory – no Palestinians” and not even one Jewish MP who is willing to raise his voice for the Palestinians` rights. The Separation Wall is the concrete manifestation of this consensus. Unfortunately, the US is a full, even if a sometimes silent partner to Israeli past and current politics, as well as to its vision of the future ... A sober look at this reality must lead us to the conclusion that currently, Israel does not have the will, nor the political resolve, to end the occupation and allow the establishment of a sovereign, free and viable Palestinian state. It is therefore clear that effective international pressure on Israel is needed in order to protect the Palestinians against the American-Israeli intention of confining them into a set of ghettoes behind the Separation Wall. It should be made perfectly clear that this pressure, be it economic, political, academic, cultural or other - is not aimed against Israel, but rather against her oppressive policies, and will persist only until such time as Israel decides to respect her obligations under International law, including the agreements and conventions she is a party to. As an Israeli, I must admit to having failed, along with the Israeli peace camp as a whole, in our efforts to convince our fellow citizens of the necessity and value of a just peace. In the light of this failure, and of the grim analysis presented earlier, I think that the Israeli peace camp needs to change its perspective. While maintaining our efforts in Israel and the occupied territories, I think that a major duty of Israeli activists is to lend our voice and moral weight, as Israelis and Jews, to a call for the application of effective pressure on Israel."

'Remembering' Philip Johnson,
by Anne Applebaum, Washington Post, February 2, 2005
"Take, for example, Philip Johnson, who died last week just as the world was marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. In its obituary, the New York Times described Johnson as "architecture's restless intellect." The Post proclaimed him a "towering figure." Both articles, like most of the other obituaries, described Johnson as the "elder statesman" of American architecture. Both also mentioned, more or less in passing, Johnson's "early admiration for fascism and anti-Semitism that he soon recanted ... Johnson helped organize a U.S. fascist party. He worked on behalf of the Nazi sympathizer and radio broadcaster, Father Charles E. Coughlin. He attended one of Hitler's Nuremberg rallies in 1938, and in 1939 he followed the German army into Poland ... But his death makes me think that the rest of us should occasionally reflect a bit harder about why we find it so easy to condemn the likes of Prince Harry, a silly, thoughtless boy, and so hard to condemn Philip Johnson, a brilliant, witty aesthete. Or why it was thought scandalous when an allegedly anti-Semitic Ukrainian businessman was allowed to ride on Colin Powell's plane to Kiev last week, while Johnson, who once wrote a positive review of "Mein
Kampf," lectured at Harvard University. Or why the Nuremberg tribunal didn't impose the death penalty on the urbane Albert Speer, Hitler's architect, or why the Academy Awards ceremony in 2004 solemnly noted the death of Leni Riefenstahl, Hitler's filmmaker, or why Herbert von Karajan, a Nazi Party member who never apologized at all -- party membership, he once said, "advanced my career" -- continued to conduct orchestras in all the great concert halls of Europe. We may think we believe any affiliation with Nazism is wrong, but as a society, our actual definition of "collaboration" is in fact quite slippery." [Indeed. America is completely in bed with -- and massaging -- today's Nazi Israel.]

[What is Dershowitz (defender of torture) going to do? Read off the Anti-Defamation League's new censor list?]
Alan Dershowitz to Speak at Columbia University on Academic Freedom and the Controversy over Columbia's Middle East Studies Department,
U.S. Newswire, February 2005
"Alan Dershowitz is an American political figure and criminal law professor at Harvard Law School. Dershowitz is known for his extensive published works, left-wing political views, work as an attorney in several high-profile law cases, and staunch support of Israel. For security purposes, media must call 212-987-1232 to add their names to the press list."

[This is the precedent. It's time for Christian "anti-hate" crusades to start making demands about all the racism and violence oozing out of American synagogues. ADL Asks Oakland Islamic Center to Stop Distributing Saudi Hate Materials,
U.S. Newswire, February 3, 2005
"Today, The Anti- Defamation League (ADL) has asked the Islamic Center of Oakland to stop distributing hate materials from Saudi Arabia to high- school aged students. According to a published report by Freedom House's Center for Religious Freedom entitled "Saudi Publications On Hate Ideology Fill American Mosques," the Oakland Islamic Center (a.k.a. Islamic Center of Oakland) is among a number of Muslim religious institutions nationwide that have been distributing written materials that allegedly promote armed violence, and that are reported to be anti-Christian, anti-Semitic, and anti-Western. The report asserts that the Oakland Islamic Center is among the religious institutions that have been distributing written materials promoting armed violence to high school students. Jonathan Bernstein, ADL San Francisco Regional Director, issued the following statement: "We are very disturbed by these allegations. The promotion of hatred, bigotry, and armed violence has no place in a civil and multicultural society such as the United States. We have called upon the Oakland Islamic Center to publicly respond to these claims. Further, if they are true, we insist that it immediately cease distributing these and similarly hateful materials." ADL is consulting with government and law enforcement officials regarding the report's content."

[Per the above article: please note that the contact people for the "Freedom House" document that indicts the Oakland mosque are Elyse Bauer and Michael Goldfarb. Why are we not surprised? Question: When is this sordid "Freedom House" going to bust the teachings of Chabad, and all the rest of dangerous Jewish/Zionist cults in America? Note how this game works. Here's the "Freedom House" description of the translations done of the Oakland mosque materials. Alas, the "Muslims" (and others) who did the translating fear to come forward, so the original documents must be shrouded in mystery. Were these Saudi documents, uh, translated in Israel?]
New Report on Saudi Government Publication in the U.S.,
Center for Religious Freedom
"
The research, translation and principle analysis of the materials for the report were carried out by both Muslims and non-Muslims who wish to remain anonymous for reasons of security. Some 90 percent of the publications are in Arabic; two independent translators reviewed each Arabic document. This project was undertaken after many Muslims requested the Center’s help in exposing Saudi extremism in the hope of freeing their communities from ideological strangulation."

[In traditional Judaism, a baby's circumcized penis is sucked for blood as some kind of weird idea about cleanliness. This fact is little known today -- certainly by non-Jews. It stands to reason that this ancient Jewish tradition may have created some interesting interpretations by non-Jews (generic "anti-Semites") who saw -- or heard about -- the practice.]
Fear rabbi gave tots herpes,
by Maggie Haberman, New York Daily News, February 2, 2005
"City health officials are investigating whether a baby boy died after contracting herpes from the rabbi who circumcised him, the Daily News has learned. The probe was launched after city officials realized that three infants in the city who tested positive for herpes last year all were circumcised by Rabbi Yitzchok Fischer. The Rockland County-based Fischer is a prominent mohel - someone who performs religious circumcisions. Under Jewish law, a mohel is supposed to draw blood from the circumcision wound to remove impurities. While many mohels do it by hand, Fischer uses a practice little known outside ultra-Orthodox communities called metzizah bi peh, in which the mohel uses his mouth. On Oct. 16, 2004, Fischer performed a bris, or religious circumcision, on twins. Ten days later, one infant died of herpes, and the other tested positive for the virus, according to papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court by city lawyers. A few weeks later, city Health Department officials found a third baby, on Staten Island, who also tested positive for herpes after being circumcised by Fischer in late 2003, the papers say. Herpes is far more dangerous to infants than adults because of babies' fragile immune systems. The health status of the two surviving boys was not clear yesterday. The city "is concerned that the possible transmission of herpes simplex virus type 1 in infants may be continuing as a result of defendant's practice of metzizah bi peh," city lawyers wrote in the complaint, dated Dec. 22. "Defendant's conduct to date constitutes a threat to the public health." The custom of metzizah is thousands of years old. But experts said that these days, many mohels breathe in through a sterile tube to draw the blood instead of using their mouths directly on the wound, although in some ultra-Orthodox sects, the oral practice is mandatory. The city asked Fischer to submit to a blood test in November, and ordered him to stop performing metzizah by mouth while waiting for the results, court papers show. Officials told him to use a sterile tube and gloves in the meantime. But the Health Department got a report that Fischer wasn't following the order, so the city filed the legal complaint to compel him do so. Fischer, 66, declined to comment yesterday. His lawyer, Mark Kurzmann, wouldn't say whether Fischer has done the blood test, citing medical confidentiality. But he said Fischer is "cooperating with the city's investigation to resolve this matter." "My client is known internationally as a caring, skilled and conscientious mohel," Kurzmann said. He suggested the babies could have contracted herpes elsewhere. He also said there are concerns about the government regulating religious practices. City lawyers declined to comment. Health officials, aware of the sensitivity of the issue, have been talking extensively to community leaders."

[JTR contributor's note: "German president grovels to Likud." Our comment: Germany has merely shifting from undergirding one Nazi regime to another. Political whores in the West are completely out of touch with the real world and, like trained pink poodles, answer only to Zionist money and influence. The next time the president of Germany visits the Israeli Knesset, we suggest he strip naked and crawl about on his hands and knees, barking, so that eager Jewish government officials may whip and kick him. That's the subtext to this article, so why not the real thing?]
German President: Antisemitism stills exists in Germany,
Haaretz (Israel), February 2, 2005
"After delivering his opening remarks in Hebrew, German President Horst Koehler on Wednesday told a special Knesset ceremony that while he bowed his 'head in shame' before Holocaust victims, anti-Semitism still existed in his country. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Germany, Koehler thanked Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, opposition leader Yosef Lapid, and Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin in Hebrew for the opportunity to address the Knesset. He delivered the remainder of his speech in German. The German president told the Knesset that responsibility for the Holocaust is an integral part of the German national identity ... Koehler also addressed concerns over growing anti-Semitism in Europe. "Every open society has its enemies," Koehler said. "Hostility toward foreigners and anti-Semitism have not disappeared from Germany." ... He denounced Palestinian suicide bombings as indefensible acts of terror and vowed Germany would always be a steadfast ally to Israel and its people ... The ceremony opened with a speech by Rivlin, who said that the existence of the ties are not easy for him or other MKs and called on Germany to outlaw neo-Nazi parties. Several MKs, including Health Minster Danny Naveh, said they would not attend the ceremony because they could not stand to hear an address to the Knesset in German. At the time of the ceremony, far-right activists held a protest opposite the Knesset, during which they burned German flags."

The ADL's Security Junkets. Making America as "Secure" as Israel,
By ALISON WEIR, CounterPunch, February 1, 2005
"American officials still reeling from 9-11 and its escalating after-shocks are increasingly turning for help to Israeli "security experts." Every few months there seems to be another report of local police officers somewhere in the country Rhode Island, California, New Jersey traveling to Israel for training in how to make America more secure. These trips are paid for, interestingly, by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an organization whose once worthy goal of opposing bigotry long ago was superseded by a very different activity: advocacy for Israel. This advocacy consists of both carrots and sticks. Our officials, understandably perhaps, are chomping on the carrots. At the same time as these junkets to Israel, more and more Israeli security experts are being hired here at home to advise us on how to make our nation safer. They're popping up everywhere -- at the local level, in state agencies, and throughout the federal government. They're offering their services to the state department, and military officers are visiting the highest levels of the Pentagon. Israeli experts are assisting us abroad, as well. They helped us interrogate prisoners at Abu-Ghraib, for example, and are present at Guantanamo making us safer. At some levels, none of this is surprising. It is certainly tempting for our financially strapped municipalities to avail themselves of a lobbying group's generosity, and there are all sorts of truisms to apply for example, "don't look a gift horse in the mouth." But the one that I suspect best fits is the old "there's no free lunch." Even more troubling, perhaps, are the cases where our over-extended federal government and struggling local ones are paying out good money for consultants whose merit is highly questionable at best. It seems to me that before we go any further in this headlong rush for Israeli expertise to protect American citizens, it's important to ask how secure Israeli experts and their policies have made Israeli citizens. Anyone who has paid any attention to the news, of course, knows the answer. The truth is, despite Israel's enormous military might (paid for by American taxpayers to the tune of over $10 million per day), Israelis are among the most terrified populations in today's world. Israelis feel unsafe in their cafes, on their streets, in their homes. They're frightened to ride their own city buses. (The wealthy, of course, don't. They take taxis and private cars.) And going to the mall in many parts of Israel is an experience that not many Americans would be eager to replicate here. Being searched by armed soldiers in combat gear before being allowed to enter, and then shopping amid people with loaded rifles strapped to their backs as they peruse the toy section is not a delight many of us would wish to copy. Of course, you might point out, Israelis are living luxuriously compared to Palestinians. "Only" about 1,000 Israelis have been killed in the past five years, not over 3,500. "Only" approximately 100 Israeli children have been killed compared to more than 600 Palestinian ones. "Only" 7,000 Israelis have been injured, not 28,000. The unemployment rate is "only" 10 % not 50%. Israelis aren't suffering malnutrition, being routinely imprisoned, grotesquely humiliated, regularly tortured. There aren't dozens of children with eyes injured and shot out, and while there are growing numbers of Israelis in wheelchairs, they don't yet approach the hundreds of Palestinians whom Israeli bullets have permanently paralyzed. While many Israelis are maimed arms missing, legs gone, faces mutilated they're "only" a fraction of the number you find in Palestine. Nevertheless, despite their relative comfort, Israelis are not living in a condition that I wish to emulate. The fact is, Israeli governmental security and policy "experts" have long promulgated policies of such ruthlessness and cruelty that a tiny but lethal number of their victims finally began to fight back. In the current intifada, 140 Palestinians were killed before a similar Jewish death on Israeli soil; 84 Palestinian children were killed before a single Israeli child. Now, as Palestinian deaths continue to spiral upward, Israeli deaths, while still significantly fewer, continue to grow as well. It's a very simple equation. The more that Israeli "experts" increase their actions to "protect" Israelis, the more they die. Overall, in fact, Israelis have been so well served by their officials, that Israeli citizens are leaving the country in droves (hence, I suspect, the many "security consultants" now peddling their wares in the U.S. security experts, too, know when to leave a sinking ship). In recent years, approximately ten percent of the population has left and some former American diplomats suspect the number of Israelis fleeing their country could easily be double that. Personally, I'm proud of America's history as a refuge for those "yearning to breathe free," and I believe in doing our best to welcome those whom extreme need drives to our shores. I don't, however, want anyone to bring "security" policies and "expertise" to our country that caused them to flee their own."

Report Rips Smut Aimed at Teens,
by Andrew Wallenstein, Yahoo! News, February 2, 2005
"Conservative watchdog group Parents Television Council blasted MTV as "smut peddlers" Tuesday, accusing the music cable network of targeting young viewers with oversexed programming. The PTC found fault with the teen-targeted network based on an examination of 171 hours of programming that aired the week of March 20 last year, during its annual "Spring Break" celebration. The analysis, contained in a report titled "MTV Smut Peddlers," spotted 13 sexual scenes per hour in MTV's reality series, as well as 32 instance of foul language per hour in its music videos. "There's no question that TV influences the attitudes and perceptions of young viewers, and MTV is deliberately marketing its raunch to millions of innocent children," PTC president L. Brent Bozell said. The report declared reality series "Making the Band 2" the channel's most offensive series, chronicling 208 instances of foul language in four total hours. An MTV spokeswoman said, "It's just unfortunate that Mr. Bozell has yet again attempted to unfairly and unaccurately paint MTV with a brush of irresponsibility around sexual and violent content. The report underestimates young people's level of intellect and sophistication."

[MTV, CBS -- both are part of the Jewish media matrix.
In 2001 Rabbi Ira Korff complained that "the suggestiveness in the media these days is increasingly irresponsible -- it's really pornography -- and its been bothering me more and more." Korff should know what he's talking about. He is the former president of National Amusements Inc., which owns Viacom, the second-largest media conglommerate on earth (controlled by Jewish mogul Sumner Redstone -- born Murray Rothstein). "Korff," notes the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, "says the worst purveyor of violence and profanity on TV is Music Television (MTV,) which is owned by Viacom. But he adds, 'I have no interest in attacking Viacom, and MTV is an ethically run business.' After all, much of his own wealth was made while serving as president and later consultant to National Amusements Inc." [HAUSMAN, T., 6-22-01]
MTV Smut Peddlers: Targeting Kids with Sex, Drugs and Alcohol. A Report on MTV Programming,
Parents' Television Council, March 20-27, 2004
"It has been a year since Janet Jackson deliberately exposed her breast to a world-wide audience that included millions of unsuspecting children during the MTV-produced 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, but America is still talking about it, and the entertainment industry is still reeling from the backlash.  The incident became one of the biggest news stories of 2004, but why?  Why were so many parents taken aback by the incident?  How is it that “three-quarters of a second on a broadcast television and 13 frames of video” have become the lynchpin for our discussions about where the culture is headed?  One possible explanation is that in that moment, millions of parents finally saw, and understood what their children are seeing every afternoon on MTV.  Dr. Jane Brown, journalism professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill observed on NPR’s Talk of the Nation, “We as adults rarely see what our kids are seeing…it was sort of a moment where popular teen culture came into the mainstream, and we all went, ‘Oh, my goodness.’” Parents witnessed first-hand the incessant crotch-grabbing and revealing clothing, the dangerous mixture of aggression and sexuality, and the relentless sexual simulation and stimulation that characterize MTV’s programming. The reality is that parents need to be worried about MTV not only because of its popularity, but also because of its tremendous influence in the lives of America’s teens and pre-teens.  MTV is the most recognized network among young adults ages 12 to 34, according to Nielsen Media Research.  It is watched by 73% of boys and 78% of girls ages 12 to 19.  Boys watch for an average of 6.6 hours per week and girls watch for an average of 6.2 hours per week. MTV is owned by Viacom, the same corporate giant that owns CBS (which aired the Super Bowl) and Nickelodeon, and that corporate synergy ensures that even the youngest TV viewers are getting acclimated to the MTV brand.  As one TV critic put it: “Nickelodeon isn't just SpongeBob Squarepants: It's a gateway station to crotch- grabbing MTV. With millions of viewers, Nickelodeon offers the perfect cross-marketing vehicle for Viacom: Kids love it; parents trust its programming.” MTV does influence young viewers.  According to Dr. Brown, “If you believe Sesame Street taught your four-year-old something, then you better believe MTV is teaching your 14-year-old something, because the influence doesn’t stop when we come to a certain age.” Indeed, research shows that watching MTV changes the attitudes and perceptions of young viewers.  At least two experiments show that watching MTV results in more permissive attitudes about sex.  One experiment showed that college students who were assigned to watch MTV developed more liberal attitudes toward premarital sex than their peers who did not watch MTV as part of the study.  The second found that seventh and ninth graders were more likely to approve of premarital sex after watching MTV for one hour. Other studies have shown that greater exposure to and greater involvement with sexual content on TV leads to a stronger endorsement of recreational sex, higher expectations of the sexual activity of one’s peers, and more extensive sexual experience. Similarly, studies on mass media influences on sexuality conclude that people who watch television programs containing depictions of attractive characters who enjoy having sexual intercourse and rarely suffer any negative consequences will be likely to imitate the behavior.  Media audiences are most likely to learn that sex is consequence-free, rarely planned, and more a matter of lust than love.  They are also likely to learn patterns of aggressive sexual behavior. And it’s not just the sexual messages on MTV that influence teen behavior – though such content is the most common.  According to the Institute on Media and the Family, even modest viewing of MTV and other music videos results in significant exposure to glamorized depictions of alcohol and tobacco use, alcohol use linked with sexuality, and violence and weapons.  Violent lyric content can also contribute to teens’ desensitization to violence."

Grim lessons for cast of Holocaust play,
Welwyn and Hatfield Times, February 2, 2005
"A CHILDREN'S theatre group performed a hard-hitting play about the Holocaust last weekend. Woodland Productions had invited guests to talk to them about the history of the era to help them develop their characters. Member Hannah Berry said: "Rehearsing for Wednesday's Child was educational. We invited two guest speakers to talk to us about this difficult moment in history. "Mrs Finklestien told us about her personal experiences of living as a Jew during the 1940s and then being deported to Auschwitz. "Mr Wilder reminded us that sadly, in some parts of the world, mass displacement and genocide still occur." She added: "Sixty years after the liberation of Auschwitz it is important that we never forget the unjust punishment of millions of men, women, and children." Woodland Productions will be casting for their next production on Thursday, February 10. They are looking for children aged five to 18 to sing, dance and mime on the theme of transport. Backstage crew aged 12 to 18 are also needed."

New Holocaust Film May Help Hungary Face Up to Past,
By Krisztina Than, Yahoo! News, February 2, 2005
"Fateless," a film based on the novel by 2002 Nobel Literature Prize winner Imre Kertesz which premieres next week, could help Hungary finally face up to the anti-Semitism of its past. The film, directed by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Lajos Koltai, shows the Holocaust through the eyes of a young boy who in 1944 is rounded up by Hungarian police in Budapest and sent to first Auschwitz and then Buchenwald. More than half a million Hungarian Jews perished in the Holocaust, and the country is still struggling to come to terms with the fact that its government and officials actively collaborated with Germany in the mass deportations. The far-right and some in the local right-wing media spurned Kertesz when he received the Nobel Prize. "People in Hungary have not faced up to the Holocaust. I hope that in the light of this recognition, they will face up to it more now," Kertesz said after he won the honor. Koltai told Reuters one of the film's messages was that people should talk about the Holocaust, which was remembered at international ceremonies last week on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. He said he agreed with Kertesz that Auschwitz was "point zero" for Europe. "We are at a kind of zero point now. We have to build up, not forget what happened. Everybody has some scar from the Holocaust ... but there is something there forever, like a big scar on the body, on the culture of Europe," Koltai said in an interview ... In 2002 Kertesz was awarded the Nobel Literature Prize "for writing that upholds the fragile experience of the individual against the barbaric arbitrariness of history."

TURK ANALYST CONDEMNS OSKANIAN OF INSULTING JEWS FROM THE UN PODIUM,
by Hakob Chakrian, AZG Armenian Daily, February 2, 2005
"Armenian foreign affairs minister Vartan Oskanian’s speech at the Special Session of General Assembly of the UN dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Auschwitz death camp liberation caught the attention of Hatem Jabbarl from Caucasian Department of Eurasian Military Research Institute. In an article of January 28 of Haberanaliz newspaper Jabbarl draws readers’ attention to Vartan Oskanian’s readiness "to join other survivors on behalf of the people and government of Armenia" and to "Jews and Armenians are linked forever by Hitler" statement and says that the General Assembly’s Special Session played more into Armenians hands than into Jews as the Holocaust is recognized worldwide while the "so-called genocide" is only recognized, Jabbarl thinks, by states that are unwilling to see Turkey developed due to their past enmity. Jabbarl considered Oskanian’s speech an opportune occasion to influence the international community from such an authoritative podium as UN’s and expressed an opinion that the Armenian foreign minister "insulted the memory of Holocaust, the Jewish people as well as the participants of the Special Session by offering his condolences". Jabbarl explained Oskanian’s "insult" by anti-Semitism rampant in Armenia. Writing that anti-Semitism has grown into a state policy in our country, he merely points out to Roman Yepiskoposyan’s "The National Systems" book and chairman of Armenian Aryan Union Armen Avetisian’s statements that "the Yezids and Jews should be put out of Armenia" as well as to the head of Armenia’s Jewish community, Rima Varzhapetian, as she feverously seeks signs of anti-Semitism. This means that the Turkish analyst is more concerned with creating an illusion of anti-Semitism than with the real state of things. But what really lies behind Jabbarl’s words is the concern that the condolences of the Armenian minister to the Jewish nation create grounds for friendship which will supposedly bind Turkey’s hands as it is striving to remove the US Congress resolutions on Armenian Genocide by means of Jews institutions. In other words, the reason Hatem Jabbarl on "finding" anti-Semitism in Armenia raised it to the rank of state policy is that he wanted to oppose anti-Semitism to Armenian foreign minister’s speech, rather annoying for Turkey."

As letter hits mainstream media, Jewish news become Russian news,
By Lev Krichevsky, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, February 1, 2005
"
Jewish news rarely becomes part of mainstream media coverage in Russia, but a recent case involving an anti-Semitic letter was an exception. What captured the media’s attention was a letter that was rabidly anti-Semitic — even by Russian standards — allegedly signed by a huge group of some 500 “Orthodox Christian patriotic” people, as the authors wanted to be called, including 20 members of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament. The letter has raised the issue of whether anti-Semitism is again spreading in Russia — and how active the Jewish community should be in reacting to issues of anti-Semitism. The lengthy document was published on the Web site of a small fringe newspaper, Rus Pravoslavnaya, or Orthodox Russia, and demanded that the prosecutor general consider imposing a ban on Judaism and Jewish community institutions in Russia, claiming they are extremist and anti-Christian. To prove their thesis, the authors went so far as to accuse Jews of ritual murders and provided a long list of anti-Semitic quotes from sources spanning 120 years of Russian history. The letter became a subject of widespread public debate, mainly because it appeared on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and because the authors claimed it was signed by a large number of Russian lawmakers ... All major Jewish leaders — including the country’s two chief rabbis — were quick to condemn the letter and its signatories, and many mainstream newspapers gave front-page space to the story. Following the media attention — and the reaction from Putin, the Foreign Ministry and Russia’s Security Council — the signatories promptly recalled the letter from the prosecutor general’s office, and all but one of the 20 lawmakers reportedly repudiated their signatures. Some even claimed they had never signed the document and were unaware of its existence before the public scandal erupted. On the surface, the reaction to the last week’s incident was easy to predict. Jewish officials and human rights activists were widely quoted in the media blasting the letter, and liberal mainstream newspapers echoed the Jewish indignation over the document. And some Jewish leaders continued to call on the prosecution of those responsible for the letter even though it was recalled. “A criminal offense has been made,” Vladimir Slutsker, the Russian Jewish Congress’ president, said on a radio show Sunday. “That the letter has been recalled in my opinion makes no difference" ... Stanislav Belkovsky, a Jewish political analyst, wrote an article that appeared on a popular Web news portal, lenta.ru, and was widely circulated among Russian-speaking Jewish Web surfers. In his article, Belkovsky suggested that the letter was concocted within Putin’s administration in order to harm the reputations of left-wing opposition lawmakers. All 20 lawmakers who reportedly signed the letter were members of the two Duma factions, the Motherland and the Communists, that were highly critical of the federal government’s handling of social reforms. Belkovsky said the letter was intended to show the West that any successor to Putin would be worse than the incumbent ... The idea of Jewish collective guilt is “quite close to the people, and can be used by the FSB, despite the sad historical precedents,” wrote political columnist Leonid Radzikhovsky. The commentary, published in the Moscow weekly Jewish Word, referred to the Federal Security Bureau, a successor to the Soviet-era KGB. The FSB is widely seen as gaining power under Putin, an ex-KGB man. “I’m afraid we don’t know the truth in this story, and may never find it out,” said Maksim Kagan, a doctoral student in mathematics, while spending Sunday night at a Moscow club that was hosting a show by an Israeli rock group. “But the fact that a Jewish issue may have been used intentionally for some political purpose should in itself be a reason for concern" ... After recent news stories on high-profile cases of anti-Semitic violence in Moscow, some Jews say they are scared. “I’m afraid to think that every third individual in my country is an anti-Semite,” said a middle-aged Jewish woman at a Moscow Jewish community center. She was speaking Monday night after a popular Moscow radio station conducted a call-in poll asking the listeners whether they believed that Jews’ participation in politics and business should be limited by the law: Thirty percent of 6,327 callers said “yes.”

Russian Jewish Congress to Sue Anti-Semitic Deputies,
Moscow News, February 2, 2005
"The Russian Jewish Congress has said it intends to sue the Duma deputies that signed a letter addressed to the prosecutor general in which the politicians called for a ban on Jewish organizations
. The organization also plans to sue the newspaper Rus Pravoslavnaya (Orthodox Russia) which published the letter on Jan. 23, the Russian Information Agency Novosti reported, citing a press release from the congress.“The signatures of the deputies of the State Duma beneath the text compromise the legislative branch of government and undermine the faith in a peaceful coexistence among various people and religions on Russian territory,” the statement said. The letter the parliamentarians addressed to the State Duma, which stunned rights activists in Russia and abroad, likened Judaism to an extremist religion that offered human sacrifices. It was recalled after sparking an outrage. The Jewish Congress’ press release cited experts who said that the letter itself was unlawful under a section of the Russian Criminal Code that makes inciting interracial hatred illegal."

Unrest on Campus Over Speaker Who Sees U.S. Role in 9/11,
By MICHELLE YORK, New York Times, January 31, 2005
"Hamilton College ... is embroiled in a controversy. An invited speaker - Ward Churchill, a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder - has compared American policy in Iraq to that of Nazi Germany. He also referred to Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the Nazis' plan to exterminate the Jews, when he called the trade center victims "little Eichmanns." For Nancy Rabinowitz, the Hamilton professor who invited Professor Churchill, the larger issue has become one of free speech. For the college president, Joan Hinde Stewart, another issue has become the national reputation of Hamilton and the future of its $175 million capital campaign, which The Wall Street Journal in a recent editorial urged people to boycott. For Professor Churchill, the issue has become his career. He has spoken for years in relative obscurity. Now, he said, the Board of Regents in Colorado plans to meet on Thursday, the day of his appearance at Hamilton, to discuss disciplinary action. All of this began last summer, when Professor Rabinowitz - who teaches comparative literature and directs Hamilton's Kirkland Project for the Study of Gender, Society and Culture - asked Professor Churchill to talk about American Indian activism, his area of expertise. He accepted and agreed to a speaking fee of $3,500 ... Just last month, this picturesque college, with its 19th-century stone buildings atop a hillside near Utica, was the scene of another controversy. A 1960's radical, Susan Rosenberg, was hired as a teacher and "activist in residence" but resigned before coming to the college after widespread protest. She was also invited by the Kirkland Project, which began as a group to help women, gays, blacks and Hispanics feel more comfortable on a predominantly male campus. Its director for 10 years, Professor Rabinowitz, says she also hopes it gives students the tools to become campaigners for "social justice," if they wish. Ms. Rosenberg served 16 years in prison for possessing explosives before President Bill Clinton pardoned her in 2000. She was also linked by federal prosecutors to the 1981 robbery of a Brink's armored car in Nyack, N.Y., in which a Brink's guard and two police officers were killed. Shortly after she declined to come, the visit of Professor Churchill began to dominate campus discussion. The college newspaper, The Spectator, published a photograph of Professor Churchill wearing a camouflage jacket, beret and sunglasses while posing with an assault weapon. For his part, Professor Churchill said in an interview, "My reaction is astonishment. This is a three-year-old piece that has been spun mercilessly and distorted. The comparison was of technocrats. Eichmann is someone who, after all, killed no one. He made the trains run on time." "Of course I have sympathy for the World Trade Center victims," he added, "the same sympathy I have for victims who are Iraqi and Palestinians."

Justice Resnick charged with DUI. Judge drives away from police of I-75,
by Jim Provance, Toledo Blade, February 2, 2005
"Ohio Supreme Court Justice Alice Robie Resnick refused to take a field sobriety test and drove away from police Monday afternoon when confronted with reports she had been driving erratically on I-75 near Bowling Green. According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, a patrol car and local police caught up to her back on I-75, pulling her over near Cygnet, and arrested her for driving under the influence and driving outside marked lines. Conviction on the misdemeanor DUI charge carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. You don't have a good reason to stop me," she protested when an officer approached her state-owned 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and spoke to her over the barking of her small dog. On an arrest video released yesterday by the patrol, she could be heard from inside her vehicle saying, "It's not right. I was not weaving anywhere. … I really cannot tolerate this." Justice Resnick, 65, of Ottawa Hills is the only Democrat remaining on the state's seven-member high court. She did not return a call to her home yesterday, but her husband, former 6th District Court of Appeals Judge Melvin L. Resnick, who answered the phone, described her as "very, very upset." "She isn't in the mood to talk to reporters today," he said. "She had recrimination problems last night. It's just a bad incident." Mr. Resnick said he was not home Monday afternoon when his wife left for Columbus where she was scheduled to be on the bench to hear oral arguments. "Somebody saw her weaving and reported it to police," he said. The highway patrol reported receiving six cell phone calls from motorists alerting them to a vehicle weaving across lanes on I-75. A taped copy of one 911 call received at the patrol's Waldridge post said the vehicle nearly sideswiped her. "I've got what looks like a drunk driver on 75 south of Toledo," a trucker told troopers. A Bowling Green officer and then a highway patrolman approached the vehicle after finding it stopped at a BP gas station at the Bowling Green exit of I-75. According to the patrol's report, they took her driver's license and registration, and she identified herself as a Supreme Court justice. She denied having had any alcohol or taken any medication. In a separate police report, the Bowling Green officer said her movements seemed "very slow and delayed," although he said he detected no odor of alcohol. She refused to take a vision test and drove off despite the officers' protests, according to police. "I informed her that she was not free to go," Bowling Green Police Officer Mark Hanson wrote in his report of the incident. "She thanked us, rolled up her window, and drove off." Much of what happened next was caught on a highway patrol video. As the patrol car followed, the gold Jeep could be seen weaving back and forth within the right lane and then briefly straddling both lanes. Police described earlier seeing her dart into the right lane between two tractor-trailers without a turn signal after she had apparently spotted the car behind her. The patrol car activated its overhead lights and Justice Resnick pulled off the right side of I-75. After Trooper Vilay Sayarath and Office Hanson approached her car, Justice Resnick exited her car and slowly walked toward the officers. She repeatedly asked them to return her license and registration so she could leave. "This is terribly embarrassing. What are you going to do with me?" she asked the officers. "You are embarrassing me." After the trooper told her she smelled of alcohol, Justice Resnick told the officers: "I have not been drinking. You're really infringing on my [pause]. OK, I'm not going to argue." At one point she handed the highway patrolman a cell phone with a man's voice later identified as that of her husband on the other end of the conversation. "They later conducted a series of tests, an eye test and a portable breath test, which is not an evidentiary test," said Lt. Rick Zwayer, a patrol spokesman. None of that occurred on camera. She registered a .216 on the portable breath test administered in a patrol car along I-75, twice the legal limit for driving under the influence of alcohol. Later, at the Findlay Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, Justice Resnick refused to take an official evidentiary Breathalyzer test. A refusal automatically results in a one-year suspension of a driver's operating license. She was arrested and charged with DUI. Her state vehicle was impounded and later returned to the Supreme Court, Lieutenant Zwayer said. Justice Resnick's appearance on the charges in Bowling Green Municipal Court has been delayed from this morning until March 2. Her Toledo attorney, Sheldon Wittenberg, declined to comment ... At one point during her discussions with officers, Justice Resnick asked what they planned to do with her, whether she was headed to jail. Then she added, "I've always said a Supreme Court justice should have a highway patrolman driving them" ... On the high court, Justice Resnick has ruled in a number of cases involving drunken-driving issues. In a 1999 ruling involving a Lucas County case, she voted with a 4-3 majority to uphold the constitutionality of pulling a suspected drunken driver over based on solely on information supplied by a cell-phone caller. In 2000, she was again part of a 4-3 majority in an Erie County case that warned police to strictly adhere to DUI field sobriety procedures or risk having convictions overturned ... In 1972, Ms. Resnick, then an assistant Lucas County prosecutor, pleaded no contest in Maumee Municipal Court to a charge of failing to stop for an accident and reckless driving. Her vehicle had reportedly skidded 412 feet on Salisbury Road, knocking over shrubs and a flagpole, and striking a home. She was found guilty, fined $35, and her license was suspended for 30 days."

Malyasia must be aware of Holocaust lesson,
by Lee Khee Gan, Malaysiakini, January 31, 2005
"On Jan 27, the world marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp operated by the Nazis in 1945 at the end of the Second World War. The anniversary was used to remember the inhumanity that mankind is capable of and the death of six million Jews and other minorities killed in Nazi concentration camps, as well as that of the survivors. Yet, in Malaysia, the position of the Malaysian government seems to be that of denial. In school textbooks, there is absolutely no mention of the Holocaust, even though it is, in many ways, the watershed of 20th century history. The fact that it happened in distant Europe is no excuse, since the point of studying world history is to study the history of mankind beyond our own immediate shores. For the anniversary of Auschwitz, where over one million innocent people were murdered in cold blood, it is somehow telling that there was little mention of it in the local media. The government obviously has a problem with allowing the suffering of the Jews be known, and this position can very easily be regarded as being anti-Semitic. Our government might not hold diplomatic relations with the state of Israel as a gesture of solidarity with the Palestinians, but this must not be allowed to spill into anti-Semitism and a denial of the Holocaust. Indeed, denying the fact of the Holocaust and being perceived to be anti-Semitic are merely counterproductive to a fair solution to the Palestinian problem. The Holocaust was a brutal testimony to the inhumanity that man is capable of and this lesson is something which all mankind must learn from, not just the countries which were directly involved in it. Malaysians must not be allowed to remain ignorant of this lesson."

Tsunami was God's punishment claims former chief rabbi,
The Irish News, January 31, 2005
"
The tsunami that ravaged southern Asia last month was God’s punishment for world support for Israel’s plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip, a former chief rabbi has claimed. “When the Holy One, Blessed be He, is angry with the nations of the world that don’t help Israel – but want to evacuate and disengage, and interfere in our affairs and harm us – then the Holy One, Blessed be He, claps his hands in sadness, and this causes the quake,” former Israeli Chief Rabbi Mordechai Eliahu told the ultra-Orthodox Ma’ayanei Hayeshua magazine. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon plans to dismantle all 21 Jewish settlements in Gaza and four in the West Bank this summer, displacing some 8,500 settlers. Eliahu, who was chief rabbi in the 1980s and 1990s, is a spiritual leader of the Jewish settler movement, which bitterly opposes the withdrawal plan."

Hebrew U.: Film of Eichmann trial is mainly a forgery,
By Goel Pinto, Haaretz (Israel), January 31, 2005
"Many sections of the documentary film, "The Specialist," which deals with the trial of Adolf Eichmann, were forged, according to a letter sent to Attorney General Menachem Mazuz on behalf of the legal adviser to Jerusalem's Hebrew University. Eyal Sivan's highly-acclaimed film, which won many awards, was released in 1999, and was put together using excerpts from the footage of Eichmann's trial in Israel in 1961. Hebrew University's charges are based on a study conducted by the former director of the Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive, Hillel Tryster, who ended his duties at the archive at the beginning of the month. Tryster, who compared the film to the original footage from the trial, says that "the film, for the most part, is a perverse fraud - from its radical editing work through to artificial dialogues that never took place."

- Peter Schwartz, chairman of the board of directors of the Ayn Rand Institute -- The Virtue of Selfishness: Why Achieving Your Happiness Is Your Highest Moral Purpose. Mr. Schwartz examines Ayn Rand's revolutionary morality of rational self-interest. He explains what genuine selfishness consists of and how it rests, not on indulging in mindless whims, but on embracing the strict guidance of reason. He demonstrates why, under a proper ethics, the moral and the practical are always in harmony. He shows the destructiveness of self-sacrifice and the impossibility of peaceful cooperation among men under the code of altruism. Finally, he discusses why political freedom can ultimately be upheld only if selfishness is recognized as a virtue. (Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m.)."

Vatican not impressed with threat to sue over access to archives,
by John Thavis, Catholic News Service, January 28, 2005
"A Jewish group's recent threat to sue for access to church archives left Vatican officials unimpressed. "It doesn't make much sense, if you know how archives function. We certainly aren't going to be intimidated," said one church expert. Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld, vice president of the Coalition for Jewish Concerns, said in Washington Jan. 27 that his group would take legal action unless the Vatican Secret Archives were opened within a week. The group believes the material could identify Jewish children baptized as Catholics during World War II. There are a couple of reasons why such demands for documents are not taken very seriously at the Vatican. For one thing, delayed opening of archival materials -- typically from 50 to 100 years -- is a practice adopted by states all over the world, for technical reasons and to protect archives from contemporary political pressures. Second, the Vatican has made extraordinary efforts to open some document sections in advance in recent years -- only to find that very few scholars bother to examine the material. "It's strange. It seems that if they can't find confirmation of their predetermined but undocumented theories, the archives can be forgotten," said Father Sergio Pagano, prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives. Father Pagano told the Italian newspaper Avvenire in January that only a trickle of experts is examining the documents regarding Vatican relations with Germany from 1922 to 1939; those documents were made available last fall, ahead of schedule. The Vatican archives also had seven employees work for three years collating more than 3 million documents on the Holy See's quiet efforts to help prisoners of war during World War II. The material was opened last May; so far, only 10 European scholars have come to do research, Father Pagano said. "Sometimes you get the impression that some scholars, whose voices are perhaps amplified too much by the media, demand the opening of the Vatican archives as if they wanted to battle their way into a secret fortress," Father Pagano said. "But when the doors open and the documents can be consulted, those who seemed interested don't show up, or come for what is basically a tourist visit," he said. In the Vatican's view, the recent controversy over a document discovered in France illustrates the dangers of amateur archival research. The letter, discovered in French church archives, purportedly was approved by Pope Pius XII. It said Jewish children who had been baptized to save them from the Nazis were to be entrusted only to families or institutions that would guarantee their continuing education in the faith. Jewish groups pounced on the text, saying it proved that the Vatican under Pope Pius XII did not want baptized Jewish children returned to their parents. But Vatican experts quickly pointed out that the letter was an unsigned summary of church policies, with no clear indication of source. It was written in French and was not found in the archives of the papal nunciature in France. Then a more complete version of the letter emerged, clarifying that church leaders were speaking of abandoned Jewish children who were in the care of church institutions, not children whose parents wanted them back. "It would be another thing if the children were requested back by the parents," said the letter. At the Vatican, Father Pagano oversees more than 50 miles of shelved archival documents, and the material just keeps growing. For example, he said, over the last six years, more than 5 million pieces of paper have been added to the collection."

Jewish groups condemn `Israeli Apartheid Week' held on university campus,
by Beth Dunn Brown, San Francisco Chronicle, January 31, 2005
"A University of Toronto student group has organized a series of lectures this week titled, "Israeli Apartheid Week," drawing condemnation from Jewish groups in a country where anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise. The program, organized by the Arab Students' Collective, includes lectures about the roots of what the students call Israel's ethnic cleansing and segregation of Palestinians. "We're trying to educate people on the fact that Israel is an apartheid state and not simply a military occupier of the Gaza," said Hazem Jamjoum, a member of the student group. The students set up a mock Palestinian refugee camp on campus to show passers-by the conditions in which they say many Palestinians have lived since the 1948 war that followed Israel's creation. The students insist their program is not meant to be a slight against the Jewish people, but what they call an oppressive Jewish state. They note Jewish students are taking part in some activities and Ilan Pappe, an Israeli historian at the University of Haifa, is scheduled to speak Thursday. Other speakers come from pro-Palestinian and Arab groups. The program has infuriated Jewish and human rights groups, noting the title alone is enough to frighten thousands of Jewish students on campus. "Is the University of Toronto hosting a free and scholarly exchange of ideas, or a racist rally masquerading as an academic conference?" asked Alastair Gordon of the Canadian Coalition for Democracies. Canada has been named one of the five countries with the highest rates of anti-Semitic incidents, along with France, Britain, Russia and Germany. The number of anti-Semitic incidents in Canada more than doubled since 2000, with 584 incidents in 2003, according to B'nai Brith Canada, the country's leading Jewish human rights group, which has condemned the University of Toronto program. Frank Dimant, vice president of B'nai Brith Canada, said the university had shown "cowardice" by not banning the event. "We hope that there won't be violence, but my heart goes out to the visible Jewish students, those wear skullcaps and identify themselves as Jews, who have to run the gauntlet this entire week," he added. David Farrar, vice-provost of students, defended the university by saying the student club had the right to free speech. "The very fact that the Arab Students' Collective and other campus groups exist speaks to a central value at the University of Toronto," Farrar said in a statement."

A Brief Guide to the Iraqi Elections,
Wildfire (UK), January 27, 2005
"Iraqi people fought for the right to have this electoin and forced the occupying powers into allowing them. This is how the US has distorted the process to try to turn elections to its advantage.
1. Iraqis are voting not for a party or an individual but for a list.
• There are a very few individuals and parties standing as such but the majority are part of lists. There is, for example, a ‘main Shia list’ and several other Shia lists, some Kurdish lists, and so on.
• The lists contain, between them, over 7000 candidates, many of whom are not even named for security reasons...
2. Iraqi people have no opportunity to elect their president or prime minister.
• The elections will create a 275 member National Assembly which will select a 3 member presidency council, which in turn will select a prime minister ...
3. None of the elected members of the National Assembly will represent a locality ...
4. Large areas of the country are not expected to be able to vote ...
5. The rules for polling and who can or can’t be a candidate were set, essentially, by the US.
• Rules were set by the Independent Iraqi Electoral Commission, or some similar arrangement of those words. The group, bar one or perhaps two members, were appointed by Paul Bremer, before handing over “power” in June ...
6. Expat voters are expected to decide the result ...
7. Certain parties and individuals have also been funded by the US.
• The International Republican Institute, an organisation linked to the US Republican party has been funding certain groups in their campaigning, giving a massive advantage.
• It is also believed to be organising the exit polls.
• It orchestrated, among other things, the coup in Venezuela ...
8. Whoever wins, the occupation will go on.
• The US has built enormous bases in Iraq which it has no intention of withdrawing from.
• The US has already spent more than $100,000,000,000 on the war in Iraq – that’s a hundred thousand million to most of us, a billion to the US. Bush is requesting another 80 thousand million dollars to carry on.
• US officials, mainly remaining anonymous, have made it abundantly clear that the elections are free only within the parameters set by the US government. The US is prepared to ‘tolerate’ a limited form of theocracy, according to one.
• Iraqi candidates are aware that there are ‘red lines’ as an unnamed Shia official put it – the election winners will not be at liberty to set any policy they choose ...
9. The new government is already bound.
• The next plebiscite (on a permanent constitution) has to be held under Bremer's law too: any three of the eighteen governorates can veto the constitution, even if the constitution wins 90% of the total vote.
• It was unlawful for Bremer or the occupying powers to enact any laws, because an occupier is not allowed to change the laws of the country seized. Nevertheless, Bremer ruled, and the interim governing council signed into law, that everything in Iraq is to be privatised, open to 100% foreign ownership or at least foreign leasehold for forty years. That includes resources, amenities and public services ...
10. Iraq has no free press ...
. The Iraqi people fought for this election.
• Last year, Iraqi people held massive demonstrations for elections. Other demonstrations had been fired on by coalition troops so it’s no exaggeration to say people risked their lives for elections.
• It was only when they realised they faced unrest from thousands and thousands of ordinary people, including the ethnic and geographical groups which had been quiet till then, that the occupying powers backed down and started working on ways to distort the election and turn it to their advantage.
• Opposition is nation-wide to the distortions imposed on the election. Thousands of anti-occupation activists are being arrested across Iraq (under martial law)."

Bremer can't account for $11.6 billion, audit shows,
by T. Christian Miller, Sydney Morning Herald (Australia), Februar 1, 2005
"The US-led provisional government in charge of Iraq was unable to properly account for nearly $US9billion ($11.6 billion) in Iraqi funds it was charged with safeguarding, a scathing audit report reveals The Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) may have paid salaries for thousands of non-existent "ghost employees" in Iraqi ministries, issued unauthorised multimillion-dollar contracts, and provided little oversight of spending in possibly corrupt ministries, according to the report by Stuart Bowen, the special inspector-general for Iraq reconstruction "While acknowledging the extraordinarily challenging threat environment that confronted the CPA throughout its existence and the number of actions taken by CPA to improve the [interim Iraqi government's] budgeting and financial management, we believe the CPA management of Iraq's national budget process and oversight of Iraqi funds was burdened by severe inefficiencies and poor management," concludes the report, which was released yesterday."

Playing the Holocaust Card,
by Ami Eden, New York Times, January 29, 2005
"As for the Jews, the main targets of Nazi racism, they face a very different sort of problem today, one that is partly of their own making. Jewish organizations have pursued an effective campaign to combat bigotry through a combination of protest and education, hoping to shame wrongdoers and encourage the next generation to shed old prejudices. And yet, as they look around, they see a world increasingly hostile to them and to Israel. It is time Jews recognize that the old strategies no longer work. Jewish organizations and advocates of Israel fail to grasp that they are no longer viewed as the voice of the disenfranchised. Rather, they are seen as a global Goliath, close to the seats of power and capable of influencing policies and damaging reputations. As such, their efforts to raise the alarm increasingly appear as bullying. The most recent example came earlier this month, after Prince Harry of Britain was photographed attending a private masquerade party in a World War II-era German uniform and Nazi armband. His appearance touched off a frenzy in the news media. The prince was called insensitive to Jewish suffering, with some suggesting that he was infected with anti-Jewish bigotry lurking in the genes of the royal family. One protester, Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, called on the prince to make amends by traveling to Poland for the Auschwitz ceremony. This is exactly the wrong approach. By playing the Holocaust card against Harry, Jewish critics deflected attention from how Harry had insulted the memory of the millions of Britons who suffered during World War II; they also risked squandering a diminishing supply of hard-won moral capital better spent in the fight against terrorism and the rise in Holocaust denial and anti-Semitism. The condemnations of Prince Harry were hardly a new phenomenon. In recent decades, a long list of religious, political and cultural luminaries, from Jesse Jackson to Marlon Brando to Dolly Parton, have found themselves forced to apologize for thoughtless remarks that were taken to be anti-Semitic. No doubt, some calls for contrition were justified. But the eagerness of Jewish civil-rights groups to play watchdog, and their tendency to err on the side of zealousness, leads them all too frequently to blur distinctions between real bigotry and the verbal blunders by well-meaning individuals ... In several recent controversies - including the debates over Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ," the role of neoconservatives in promoting the invasion of Iraq war, and the public celebration of Christmas - we have seen a new willingness, whether by borderline bigots, respected celebrities or policymakers, to express aloud ideas about Jews and Israel that until recently were taboo. The protests by anti-Semitism watchdogs did nothing but embolden these people. This trend would only have been reinforced by the spectacle of a bullied prince roaming the grounds of a former concentration camp, doing his best to appear suitably remorseful ... As the world recalls the horrors and liberation of Auschwitz, Jewish organizations and advocates for Israel should remember that "speaking truth to power" does not work when you are seen as the powerful one."

Nadler Blast Administration for Appointing Anti-Semite to State Department Delegation. Congressman Calls Appointment "an insult to the entire Jewish people,"
U.S. House of Reprentatives (Press Release of Representative Jerrold Nadler, January 29, 2005
"Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) today blasted the Bush Administration for appointing an open anti-Semite to the State Department’s delegation to the much-anticipated inauguration of Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko. “This is an outrage, and an insult to the entire Jewish people,” Congressman Nadler said. “It’s completely unfathomable that at this moment in history, as the world reflects on the tragedy of Auschwitz, the Administration would send one of this country’s most vocal anti-Semites on an ambassadorial assignment anywhere – much less to a celebration of the triumph of democracy.”  The State Department’s delegation of high-ranking official such as former Secretary of State Colin Powell and House Speaker Dennis Hastert also included Ukrainian-American activist Myron KuropasAccording to widespread media reports, Mr. Kuropas has a long and outspoken history of anti-Semitism.  He accuses the Jewish people at large of using the Holocaust to manipulate global sympathy, and of inciting Soviet atrocities in the Ukraine. “Let the Jews go on the defensive for a change,” the Philadelphia Inquirer quotes Kuropas as saying. “The crimes of their people cannot be explained away easily.”  Kuropas has also made numerous allegations that Jews profit from what he calls the “Holocaust industry.” “Even leaving aside the Vice President’s embarrassing vesture at the Auschwitz memorial ceremonies yesterday, it’s clear that this Administration needs to get serious about the legacy of the Holocaust,” Nadler added.  “The utter gravity of that genocide is not up for debate, and deserves due consideration in this Administration’s approach.”

[More Jewish sick-ohs, nuclear bomb red-alert level. Another neurotic Jewish gift to the world: Teller's hydrogen bomb. And, for that matter, "father" Oppenheimer's atom bomb. (Oppenheimer was eventually dumped from atom bomb research because of his alleged communist spying.]
"Edward Teller: The Real Dr. Strangelove". A Review,
by Lawrence S. Wittner, ZNet, January 29, 2005
"Although most people would prefer to forget it, ever since the atomic bombing of Japanese cities in August 1945 the world has lived on the brink of nuclear annihilation. And no individual played a more important role in fostering the nuclear arms race and its terrible dangers than Edward Teller, a Hungarian emigre physicist. In "Edward Teller: The Real Dr. Strangelove," Peter Goodchild -- an award-winning television producer for the BBC and the author of a biography of Robert Oppenheimer -- provides a detailed, informative biography of Teller. Drawing upon interviews he conducted, manuscript materials, and secondary sources, Goodchild sketches a revealing portrait of this gifted and extraordinarily influential figure. Although Teller was born into a relatively privileged, comfortable, Jewish professional family in Budapest, he underwent an unhappy childhood. His mother was often worried and over-protective and, thus, he grew up a very serious child, frightened of everyday situations. Indeed, Teller himself recalled that "the consistency of numbers" was "the first memory I have of feeling secure." And there was much to feel insecure about. Within short order, the Teller family life in Budapest was disrupted by World War I, a postwar Communist revolution, and a tide of post-Communist anti-Semitism. Though he was unusually bright, Teller recalled that, at school, he had no friends among his classmates, was ridiculed by some of his teachers, and "was practically a social outcast." Not surprisingly, he "reached adolescence still a serious child with no sense of humor." As Teller moved on to Germany to attend university classes and do physics research, his social acceptance and social skills improved markedly. Thrown together with other brilliant scientists, many of them as maladjusted as he was, Teller developed genuine warmth, humor, and charm. Nevertheless, his childhood difficulties deeply marked his subsequent career. Goodchild argues, convincingly, that Teller's "thirst for acceptance -- with the hurt and anger he felt when it was denied" -- became "a defining feature" of his life. With the Nazi rise to power, Teller left Germany for Britain and, soon, for the United States, where he settled comfortably into an academic career. In 1939, along with two other Hungarian emigre physicists, Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner, he met with Albert Einstein and helped convince him to warn President Franklin Roosevelt that the German government might be developing an atomic bomb. This proved to be the beginning of the Manhattan Project, the secret wartime atomic bomb program ... He was also chagrined when his plans for work on the "Super" H-bomb were disrupted. For these setbacks, he blamed the director of the Los Alamos lab, Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist whose influence, popularity, and cliquish behavior he began to resent. When Szilard asked Teller to circulate a petition at Los Alamos urging that the bomb not be used against Japan, Teller was ready to do it, but was dissuaded by Oppenheimer. Indeed, Teller reported back to Szilard that, in light of the need to convince the public that "the next war could be fatal," the "actual combat use" of the weapon "might even be the best thing." It was the first sign of his hawkishness and, also, of a complex relationship with Oppenheimer, that characterized his life in the following decades. With the end of the war, Teller -- deeply pessimistic about postwar relations with the Soviet Union -- pressed scientists to continue their nuclear weapons work. Initially, to be sure, he supported nuclear arms control and disarmament measures like the ill-fated Acheson-Lilienthal Plan. But, increasingly, he championed the development of the H-bomb -- a project in which he hoped to play a leading role. As Goodchild shows, by developing the H-bomb, Teller was responding both to his fear that the Soviet Union might conquer the world and to his jealousy of Oppenheimer, then widely lauded as the "father of the atomic bomb." ... [T]he mathematician Stan Ulam may have been responsible for the necessary conceptual breakthrough. Nevertheless, Teller received the lion's share of the credit and, ultimately, became known as "the father of the H-bomb" -- a weapon a thousand times as powerful as the bomb that obliterated Hiroshima. Nor was the creation of the H-bomb Teller's only victory over his putative enemies. In 1954, he teamed up with other foes of Oppenheimer (and of nuclear arms controls) to destroy his rival's career and influence. Oppenheimer had applied to the Atomic Energy Commission to reinstate his security clearance, and this triggered a dramatic, highly-publicized loyalty-security hearing. Although Teller's friends urged him not to testify, he rejected their advice. Thus, during the hearing, he asserted that, based on Oppenheimer's actions since 1945, he thought it vital for national security to deny clearance to him. This also turned out to be the decision of the board, which cut off Oppenheimer from government programs he had once directed and terminated his lingering influence upon them ... Teller, however, proceeded to make new friends, particularly within the ranks of the military-industrial complex, who appreciated the positions he had taken and recognized his utility as a champion of new nuclear weapons programs. And he proved to be a good investment. Urging Congress and the President to spurn the idea of a nuclear test ban treaty, Teller argued that "it would be a crime against the people" to stop nuclear testing when he and other weapons scientists stood on the brink of developing a "clean" bomb. "Peaceful nuclear explosions," he told President Dwight Eisenhower, could be used to uncover deposits of oil, alter the course of rivers, and "perhaps even modify the weather." Eisenhower was greatly impressed, and suggested that it might be a good idea to share the "clean"; bombs with the Russians, an idea that Teller, naturally, resisted. Under Teller's direction, his colleagues at Livermore devised ever wilder schemes to prove that nuclear testing could be hidden and, therefore, a test ban was not possible. These included exploding weapons in deep caves, building a gargantuan shield to hide x-rays from earthbound observers, and planning nuclear tests on the far side of the moon. Although much of the public was growing concerned about the nuclear fallout from testing, Teller assured Americans that fallout was "not worth worrying about." Nuclear test radiation "need not necessarily be harmful," he declared, and "may conceivably be helpful." One of the zanier ventures promoted by Teller involved the use of H-bombs to blast out a deep-water harbor in northern Alaska. In the late 1950s, the influential physicist encouraged activities that included using nuclear explosives to create diamonds, to mine oil, and with the assistance of 26 nuclear devices to carve out a new canal adjacent to the Panama Canal. He even opined that it would be hard to "resist the temptation to shoot at the moon. . . to observe what kind of disturbance it might cause." Eventually, these grandiose ideas took shape in Project Plowshare. To implement its first component, Project Chariot, Teller flew off to Alaska to propose exciting possibilities that included using nuclear explosions to construct dams, lakes, and canals. Ultimately, Teller narrowed down the Alaskan venture to using nuclear weapons to blast out a giant harbor near Cape Thompson. Although commercial interests in Alaska liked the idea, local scientists were critical and the local Inuit people -- 32 miles from the site of the planned nuclear explosions -- were not at all eager to have their community turned into a nuclear wasteland. Responding to the surge of protest against Project Chariot, the Kennedy administration scrapped it. Goodchild reveals, however, that these apparently irrational schemes had a hidden logic, for "Chariot was intended as a cover for military activities." Faced with the prospect of a nuclear test ban, Teller was promoting "peaceful" nuclear explosions as a means of continuing the testing of nuclear weapons. Teller's fierce faith in nuclear weapons became ever more evident in the 1960s and 1970s. He testified before Congress against the Partial Test Ban Treaty and also spoke out against it on television. In addition, he championed the development of an ABM system that would employ nuclear explosions to destroy incoming missiles, held an underground nuclear test at Amchitka Island that set off the most powerful underground explosion in American history, and lobbied hard against the SALT treaties of Presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter. "He . . . was becoming so wildly hawkish," recalled Marvin Goldberger, one of Teller's early students, "that no one wanted him around except the extremists in the Pentagon." Teller's plunge into extremism carried over into the debate over the hazards of nuclear power. When the near meltdown of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant occurred, releasing dangerous amounts of radioactivity, Teller reassured a congressional committee that, "zero is the number of proven cases of damage to health due to a nuclear plant in the free world." The day after his congressional appearance, Teller was hospitalized with a heart attack, and even this became grist for his propaganda mill. In July 1979, under a two-page headline in the Wall Street Journal reading "I WAS THE ONLY VICTIM OF THREE MILE ISLAND," there appeared a large photo of Teller, along with his explanation that the cause of his health problem "was not the reactor. It was Jane Fonda. Reactors are not dangerous." Goodchild then goes on to say: "An editorial in the New York Times accused Teller of propaganda... It then pointed out something Teller had not mentioned: that the sponsor of the advertisement, Dresser Industries, had manufactured the valve that had stuck open and started the emergency." Although Teller had substantial influence on U.S. public policy through the 1970s -- fostering the H-bomb during the Truman years, purging Oppenheimer and sabotaging a test ban treaty during the Eisenhower years, excluding underground nuclear testing from the test ban treaty during the Kennedy years, securing the deployment of an ABM system during the Johnson years, and keeping the U.S. government busily engaged in the nuclear arms race during the Nixon, Ford, and Carter years -- he came into his own after the 1980 election victory of Ronald Reagan. Teller arranged for the appointment of a protégé of his as the president's Science Advisor, became a member of the White House Science Council, met with the president at the White House on nuclear issues, and did as much as any other individual to convince him that the creation of a Star Wars anti-missile system was vital to the national defense. The Russians, Teller told Reagan, were about to deploy "powerful directed energy weapons" in space, thus enabling them to "militarily dominate both space and the earth, conclusively altering the world balance of power." Thus, "urgent action" was needed to build an anti-missile system that would be powered by nuclear weapons explosions and could be deployed within a few years. As is well-known, Reagan swallowed this anti-missile proposal hook, line, and sinker though, in fact, Teller's claims for it had little relation to reality ... Edward Teller is a book well worth reading. Provocative and convincing, it highlights the importance of the personal dimension -- including personal neuroses -- in the history of the nuclear arms race."

Israel Aircraft Industries unmanned plane in final stretch of U.S. Army tender,
By Amnon Barzilai, Haaretz (Israel), January 30, 2005
"Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) has reached the final stages of a U.S. military tender for unmanned aerial vehicles. In this tender, IAI is a subcontractor for Northrop Grumman, which now faces General Atomics in the final stage for the contract worth some $900 million. In choosing between the two, the American army must decide whether it will go with the Hunter 2, the latest of IAI's Hunter family of unmanned aerial vehicles, developed and manufactured by the Israel Aircraft's IAI/MALAT plant, or the American Warrior vehicle. The first generation of both of these aircraft was used in operations by the U.S. Army in Iraq and Afghanistan. The U.S. Army also awarded both companies a grant of $250,000 each to prepare continuing trials on their UAVs which are scheduled to take place in the coming months in Arizona ... The first generation of the Hunter UAV was a joint development 10 years ago, commissioned by the U.S. Army, which in the end ordered only a few of the systems and land stations following a series of unexpected troubles. Despite this setback, and as it had canceled its plans for the aircraft, it then used the Israeli Hunter UAVs in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Northrop Grumman reported after the army's decision on the final stage of the tender, that the Hunter planes had accumulated some 32,000 flight hours, 13,000 of which were in operations in the Balkans and the war in Iraq."

[The world Jewish Mafia from the Ethiopian Jewish perspective:]
American Jewish aid group in Ethiopia accused of denying food to Falash Mura,
by Uriel Heilman, Jerusalem Post, January 31, 2005
"A fight has broken out in Ethiopia's Falash Mura community over the activities of an American Jewish aid group that some say runs a Mafia-like operation at its compounds in Addis Ababa and Gondar - where some 15,000 to 17,000 Falash Mura await permission to immigrate to Israel. Those making the accusations against the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry (NACOEJ) say the group has withheld food for months at its compound in Addis Ababa, runs an embroidery operation in slave-labor-like conditions, threatens community members who speak out against the abuses and employs a representative who beats up people. NACOEJ, which spends about $1.5 million per year to provide food and Jewish education to the Falash Mura in Ethiopia, denies all the charges. Officials say the accusations stem from a labor dispute between NACOEJ and some disgruntled schoolteachers recently fired by NACOEJ and deemed ineligible for emigration by Israeli officials. 'It's a complex business that is horrifying,' said Barbara Ribakove Gordon, NACOEJ's executive director ... NACOEJ 'has been abusing people for the last 13 years,' said Yoseph Enyew, an Ethiopian Jew who emigrated to Canada in 1984 but returned to Addis Ababa about four years ago. 'Whenever people complain of abuses or of misadministration, they stop helping them.' The one thing both sides seem to agree upon is that many community members are angry and, to some extent, fearful. Enyew and some others living or working in Ethiopia who were interviewed by The Jerusalem Post said community members are afraid to speak out for fear that NACOEJ will retaliate by making sure they don't qualify for emigration to Israel - the universal hope among the Falash Mura. The charges against NACOEJ were aired publicly in a special program on Ethiopian TV two weeks ago. NACOEJ officials said their viewpoint was neither sought nor represented in the broadcast."

Pointing out Jewish racism, ethnocentrism, exploitation, etc. etc. etc. is forbidden today but it was a norm of the past because there didn't used to be a taboo about mentioning it. What was the past like, vis-a-vis Jewish tribalism? Only Jews have permission to say.]
A classic anti-Semite? Try William Shakespeare,
by Ron Grossman, Chicago Tribune, January 30, 2005
"Considering the furor kicked up by "The Passion of the Christ," a newly filmed version of "The Merchant of Venice" recently slipped into multiplexes with remarkably little fuss. For months before the opening of Mel Gibson's movie, pundits (including this writer) wrung their hands in print. Jewish groups decried, sight unseen, an age-old stereotyping of their people as bloodthirsty Christ killers. The dramatic engine of "The Merchant of Venice" is the Shylock character, a money-grubbing Jew fixated on literally having a pound of Christian flesh. Yet the movie has drawn respectful reviews, not picket lines, perhaps because it is easier to criticize Gibson than Shakespeare. Gibson is a Hollywood actor. He is a self-advertised conservative Catholic. But Shakespeare is the Bard. His poetic diction established the modern English language. It is unsettling to think he also created as monstrous a word-portrait as can be found in the picture gallery of anti-Semitism. Since high school, it has been drummed into us that Shakespeare understood the human psyche like no writer before or since. His Shylock, played to the hilt by Al Pacino in the new movie, continues to fascinate audiences 400 years after the character's creation. Maybe that tells us something we would rather not know: That behind the civilized veneer we present to the world, even the most enlightened of us--Jew as well as gentile--still harbor the residue of ugly hatreds that sold theater tickets in Shakespeare's day. Certainly, more apologies, excuses and convoluted explanations have been offered for "The Merchant of Venice" than any other literary work. Heinrich Heine, the great Romantic writer, proclaimed Shylock "the most respectable person in the piece." According to the poet W.H. Auden, the key to the character "is not that he is a Jew or a heretic, but that he is an outsider." The Yale scholar Harold Bloom reports that his brightest students squirm when he tells them, flat out: "One would have to be blind, deaf and dumb not to recognize that Shakespeare's grand, equivocal comedy, `The Merchant of Venice' is nevertheless a profoundly anti-Semitic work." Other notable writers have been no friend to the Jews: George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, Aldous Huxley, G.K. Chesterton and T.S. Eliot, among them. But generally their literary achievements were independent of their prejudices. In Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice," Jew-baiting and the making of a masterpiece come together. It would be comforting to think that hatred might produce the ramblings of a Hitler but certainly not a great work of art. Yet such is the power of anti-Semitism ... In recent times, some African-American intellectuals have revived the Shylock image of money-grubbing Jews. There were, in fact, Jewish shopkeepers in black neighborhoods. But they had moved on--like the Jews of medieval England--before black-oriented radio talk shows began blaming the Jew for the black community's suffering. The roots of anti-Semitism trace to the Christian narrative of Jesus' rejection by the Jews. Yet there is a flourishing anti-Semitic book trade in Japan, a Shinto and Buddhist country."

[Sort of inverse "suicide bombers?"]
Zionist report: 36 Zionists commit suicide in January,
The Palestine Information Center, January 30, 2005
"
The number of Zionists who have committed suicide since the start of the current year reached 36, including ten last week, a recent Zionist report disclosed. The report showed that the number of the Zionist nationals, who have killed themselves since 1st November 2004 till 14th January this year was put at 108, and maintained that some 13% of the Zionist youths had planned to commit suicide while 5% had actually attempted to do so. It made it clear that no tangible solution for such a growing phenomenon was looming in the foreseeable future, especially in the light of the financial hardships the Zionist psychological services department was currently experiencing. Hebrew studies imputed the increasing number of suicide cases amongst the Zionists to the deteriorating security and economic situation the Hebrew state was currently witnessing in view of the unending Palestinian commando raids on Zionist targets in addition to other social and psychological factors such as financial straits and narcotics-addiction."

[Christians are constantly decreed as anti-Jewish bigots, Muslims are "terrorists," but it's impossible to criticize Jews in any public forum without being assailed and persecuted. Jewish ideology solicits hostility, and always has. Pure and simple. What is the nature of modern "anti-Semitism?" Why is it always asked now? The worse Israel gets, the more Jewish racism must be defended by the Power Elite throughout the West.]
Anti-Semitism raises ugly head in Europe. Though not like the past, there has been an upward trend in attacks,
by Matthew Scofield, Houston Chronicle, January 29, 2005
"For the past four years — as friends erased "Dirty Jew" graffiti from their office plaques and her French-born daughter puzzled over "go back where you belong" comments from strangers on the street — Evelyne Chiche has spent a piece of each day wondering if she was living in the wrong country.
This spring, the 62-year-old Jewish radio host plans to move to Miami. "I think it's important for my grandchildren here that I move, to provide them with a safe place should they need to get away," she said. "France has changed." On Thursday, 27 world leaders gathered in Poland to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp, where 1 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered. But as the world focuses on the past, an increasing number of European Jews are concerned, to quote Sammy Ghozlan, a retired Calais police chief who now investigates anti-Semitic crimes, that, "After decades of peace, the old taboos against anti-Semitism are broken. There is no future here for a Jew." Nobody maintains that Europe is again suffering the kind of hatred that gave rise to Auschwitz and other death camps in Adolf Hitler's mad rush to his "final solution" to the "Jewish problem." But the rise in anti-Semitism, chronicled in upward trend lines of European reports on attacks and threats against Jews, has prompted open concern in a continent whose history, from the Spanish Inquisition and medieval ghettos to the Dreyfuss affair and Hitler's rise, is riven with attacks on Jews ... Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, an international Jewish human-rights organization, calls the wave of violence "the largest onslaught against European synagogues and Jewish schools since Kristallnacht," the night in 1938 when Nazi sympathizers stormed the shops and homes of Jews throughout Germany, smashing property and beating people. Nearly 100 Jews were killed. Why anti-Semitism is growing is open to debate. Ghozlan traces the rise to the Palestinian uprising against Israel that began four years ago. He also thinks that part of the rise is demographic: Arab immigrants now make up about 10 percent of the French population."

[Allegiance to the Jewish victimology matrix takes neither courage nor morality, for American culture is overwhelmingly Judeocentric, brainwashed in support of increasing Israeli fascism. Joining the great Jewish bandwagon (bulldozer) is easy, with perks and rewards along the flowered road everywhere. Asserting one's morality by submission to omnipresent Holocaust obsessions has become quite the same as a championing an engineered fashion trend. Resisting Jewish power, exploitation, and persecution takes both courage and a quest for moral truth that transcends dime-a-dozen dogma. The mass media IS Jewish in all important aspects, both literally and figuratively. Bottom line to get ahead in this world: please your masters.]
Never Forget. Those who ask why the Holocaust always must be kept in mind clearly haven't heard about a costume party in the English countryside,
Houston Chronicle [Editorial], January 28, 2005
"A confluence of events emphasizes the importance of teaching anew to each generation the lessons of evil incarnate in Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany. Early in the new year, Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, appeared at a fancy-dress party near his father's country estate dressed in the desert uniform of Hitler's Afrika Corps. He topped off the get-up with a swastika armband. As the popular question has it: What was he thinking? The immediate apology, once the prince's picture was splashed in a London tabloid, was proper but did not address a central question. How can a privileged, well-educated 20-year-old whose nation sacrificed so much to defeat Hitler even consider tricking himself up in vestiges of the damnable regime? It was more than the "poor choice of costume" spoken of in the prince's written statement. Somewhere along the line, a parent or a teacher or a culture missed delivering an important lesson from history that is not really that long ago. With this disturbing incident in mind, it was good to hear of the ceremony in Berlin by which the German government marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp run by the Nazis in Poland. "I express my shame in the face of those who were murdered — and, above all, you who survived the hell of the concentration camps," German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said in an observance attended by survivors of Auschwitz. "The overwhelming majority of Germans living today bears no guilt for the Holocaust, but they do bear a special responsibility." Schroeder's statement was a superb, direct answer to some young Germans who question why such anniversary commemorations continue. Schroeder's statement was also an implicit warning. "The evil of Nazi ideology did not come from nowhere," the chancellor said. "The brutalization of thought and the loss of moral inhibitions had a history; above all, Nazi ideology was desired by people and man-made." Do not be smug and believe that its twisted message could not be whipped up again in some festering corner of the globe. Its re-creation is abetted by failure to remember the not so distant past."

[Blasphemy! Here she is, Jewish Lobby, the Queen of "Anti-Semites." Right? This woman dares to use the sacred "Holocaust" term in reference to animals. Jews! You have a patent on the term "Holocaust!" What a defamation of Jewish sacred suffering! Sue her! Rake her over the coals! Remind her that the Jewish Lobby will never stand for this "trivialization" of anything Jewish. At the very least, chain this woman up and force her to watch Schindler's List in a loop for a week straight with total sleep deprivation!]
A Tale of Two Holocausts,
by Karen Davis, Center on Animal Liberation Affairs, Animal Liberation Philosophy and Policy Journal, Volume II, Issue 2,
"An understandable resentment can come from the sense that the uniqueness of one’s own group’s experience with suffering is appropriated to fit the experience of another group. One group’s experience with suffering is unique, but not in such a way that it precludes comparisons or analogies with the suffering of other groups. For this reason, an experience of oppression, such as the Holocaust, may serve as an appropriate metaphor to reveal similarities inherent in other forms of oppression, such as the oppression of nonhuman animals by human beings ... That there could be a link between the Third Reich and society’s treatment of nonhuman animals is hard for most people to grasp. That nonhuman animals could suffer as horribly as humans in being reduced to industrialized products and industrial waste and treated with complete contempt– a clear link between Nazism and factory farming – contradicts thousands of years of teachings that humans are superior to animals in all respects. Not only is this a “humans versus animals” issue in the minds of most, but by this time the Holocaust has become iconic and “historical,” whereas the human manufacture of animal suffering is so “normal” and pervasive that many people find it hard even to regard the slaughter of animals as a form of violence. Yet the continuity is there. In this article I argue that comparing our systemic abuse of nonhuman animals to the Holocaust can enable us to gain some concrete knowledge about the destructive elements in human nature and what it means to be at the mercy of these elements.  And I ask whether we have the ability – the will – to transform ourselves since we claim to hate violence and to value life ...the appropriation of animal suffering to express human suffering is seldom accorded the justice of reciprocity. On the contrary, at the time of this writing, many Jewish people have expressed indignation over comparisons that are being made by animal advocates between the human-imposed suffering endured by billions of nonhuman animals each year and the suffering endured by millions of Jews under the Nazis. At the same time, many Jews support the comparisons and were sensitized to animal slaughter after experiencing or conceptualizing the massacre of Jews, as Charles Patterson demonstrates throughout his book, Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust (2002). My own stance on the issue appeared in a 1999 profile of my work in The Washington Post. In “For the Birds,” Washington Post writer Tamara Jones declared at the outset: “Yes, Karen Davis is serious when she says the extermination of 7 billion broiler chickens is the moral equivalent of the Holocaust” (Jones 1999, F1). After publication of the article, I received a voice-mail message denouncing my stance as anti-Semitic, even though the article stressed how my preoccupation with the evils perpetrated on innocent victims under Hitler had evolved to illuminate my awareness of humanity’s relentless institutionalized assault upon nonhuman animals."

Holocaust memorial tour opens its doors to adults,
by Lisa J. Huriash, Palm Beach Sun-Sentinel, January 30, 2005
"For the first time since the March of the Living program began in 1988, Jewish agencies in Broward and Miami-Dade are offering the program just for adults, Jewish and non-Jewish alike. Agencies in both counties offer the tour of Poland's Nazi gas chambers to 11th- or 12th-grade Jewish high school students internationally in even-numbered years. This year, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, Jewish agencies throughout the United States, Canada, South America and Europe are pushing for adults to come to bump the numbers to 18,000 participants. Until now the largest number of international participants was in 1998 -- to mark Israel's 50th anniversary -- when 8,000 teens took part ... Adults will travel the same itinerary as the high school students: the Polish cities of Warsaw and Krakow, which once had vibrant Jewish communities. In addition, the participants will see the death camps of Auschwitz, Birkenau and Majdanek. The march in Auschwitz retraces the steps of those who walked to their own deaths in the gas chambers. It was known as the "March of the Dead." The program is timed to end in Israel for both Holocaust Remembrance Day and Israel Independence Day."

500-seat theater part of Jewish campus expansion,
by Robert Trussell, Kansas City Star, January 30, 2005
"The Jewish Community Campus in Overland Park is constructing a fully equipped 500-seat theater as part of a $10 million expansion of the existing building. The campus on 115th Street between Nall and Metcalf is home to the Jewish Community Center, which will operate the theater, as well as the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy and seven other tenants. The campus encompasses 212,000 square feet. The construction project will add 33,000 square feet. In addition to the Lewis and Shirley White Theatre, the addition will include dressing rooms, a green room for the actors, a scenery-and-costume shop, an activity room for seniors, a new multipurpose room and a new boardroom. Between the existing building and the theater will be an east-west walkway called the Galleria that will connect with a new entrance on the west side specifically for the theater ... Alan Bram, executive director of the Jewish Community Campus, said that $10 million has been raised but that organizers are raising an additional $3 million for an operating endowment. About $1.5 million of the endowment has been raised so far. The White family provided the seed money. Real estate pioneer Lewis White — a founding partner of Copaken, White & Blitt — had pushed for a theater for several years but died two years ago before the project could get off the ground. Shirley White, his widow, said the original impetus was both practical and personal. “First of all, we had children at the Hebrew Academy and used to go to programs there, and they were always in the social hall,” Shirley White said. “And, of course, the social hall was flat and you could not see if you couldn't get in the front row. So Lewis was always saying, ‘Why can't we have a theater like everybody else has?' ”

[Israel = hellious, barbarous, "Chosen People" Nazi fascism.]
'Palestinian corpse used for IDF anatomy lesson',
by Amos Harel, Haaretz (Israel), January 28, 2005
"The Breaking the Silence organization has collected new testimony from Israel Defense Forces soldiers on harsh actions carried out during the course of the fighting in the territories. Two of the testimonies pertain to a military doctor who gave medics lessons in anatomy using the bodies of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces. IDf sources said on Thursday that the army was unaware of the incidents and that the reports would be investigated. An IDF conscript who served as a medic in the Ramallah district some two years ago told Haaretz that the "lesson" had taken place following a clash between an armed Palestinian and an IDF force. The soldier said that the Palestinian's body had been riddled with bullets and that some of his internal organs had spilled out. The doctor pronounced the man dead and then "took out a knife and began to cut off parts of the body," the soldier said. "He explained the various parts to us - the membrane that covers the lungs, the layers of the skin, the liver, stuff like that," the soldier continued.
"I didn't say anything because I was still new in the army. Two of the medics moved away, and one of them threw up. It was all done very brutally. It was simply contempt for the body. I saw other dead enemy bodies during my service. No other doctor did anything like that." The second report came from a soldier who served in Hebron in October 2000. The soldier told Breaking the Silence that a comrade had fired live rounds at a Palestinian youth, Mansour Taha Ahmed, 21, who was standing some distance from a group of stone-throwers. The soldier said he was firing rubber bullets at the stone-throwers when he suddenly heard his comrade fire live rounds, killing the young man. No Military Police investigation was opened into the incident."

It's riches to rags as fashion matriarch and sons guilty of $15m tax fraud,
By Natasha Wallace, Sydney Morning Herald, January 29, 2005
"The sense of relief was palpable - it had been one of the state's longest, and most keenly fought, criminal trials. As fraud cases go, it was unheard of. For eight months, the jury had listened as the court heard from 39 witnesses in an attempt to shed light on the complicated accounting history of the socialite and eastern suburbs fashion matriarch Ida Ronen. But it took the 10-member jury four days to deliver a guilty verdict, and last night Ronen, 71, and her two sons, Nitzan, 44, and Izhar, 42, were behind bars. The trio failed to declare 90 per cent of the cash takings from their family clothing businesses, amounting to $15million, to the Australian Taxation Office between 1992 and 2001. They own women's fashion label Dolina, sold through retail outlets David Jones and Myer. The trio squirrelled away earnings from their companies - On Fovo, Ronen Young Fashions, Dolina Enterprises and Dolina Fashion Group - into Israeli and other foreign bank accounts for nearly 10 years. When National Crime Authority officers raided her address in February 2001, they asked what she planned to do with $210,000 they found stashed in her wardrobe. She said: "I keeping it." Ida Ronen's partner, George Segal, was also charged with conspiracy but was given indemnity as a Crown witness. There were 8000 pages of transcript and 460 exhibits - mostly boxes of accounting documentation, plus transcripts of 350 intercepted phone calls in Hebrew, Bulgarian and English and a computer and cash register taken from Ida Ronen's home."

Harris gifts tied to controversial fundraiser. She got 10 $2,000 checks from donors connected to a man known as "the Brooklyn Bundler."
by Adam C. Smith, St. Petersburg Times (FL), January 27, 2005
"U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris, Florida's most famous member of Congress and a potential candidate for Senate, received early Christmas presents late last year from some controversial benefactors. While raising money in New York on Dec. 12, she received 10 $2,000 checks from people related to or connected to a New York rabbi and campaign fundraiser dubbed "the Brooklyn Bundler" who was indicted on charges of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal money intended for disabled children. The donors came mostly from Brooklyn, N.Y., but also from executives of an Iowa slaughterhouse that was at the time facing allegations of inhumane treatment of animals. PoliticalMoneyLine, a nonpartisan campaign finance information service, on Wednesday noted the bundled contributions to Harris and how they follow the fundraising practice used for years by Rabbi Milton Balkany. His ability to deliver campaign checks to politicians years ago earned him the nickname the Brooklyn Bundler. Balkany also has emerged as a controversial political player. Last year federal prosecutors opted to defer prosecution of Balkany for allegedly misappropriating $700,000 in federal grant money, after he agreed to pay back the money and accepted travel restrictions. The politically connected rabbi and private school leader also was implicated, but not charged, in a case involving bribery of federal prison officials to improve the living conditions of certain prisoners, according to the New York Daily News ... Balkany did not contribute to Harris' campaign, but his son Menachim and other relatives provided checks on Dec. 12. They include executives related by marriage to Balkany who lead the country's biggest kosher slaughterhouse, Agriprocessors in Iowa. That company had been under criticism since an animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, last month released a secretly recorded videotape that showed a steer staggering with its throat slit and its trachea and esophagus dangling out. Soon after that tape's release, the U.S. Department of Agriculture told its inspectors they could shut down a slaughterhouse if they witness a scene like that. Most of the Brooklyn and Iowa donors to Harris did not return phone calls, though Boruch Greenberg of Brooklyn said he viewed Harris as a strong supporter of Israel and an emerging Republican leader. He declined to say who encouraged him to contribute $4,000. "She has further political ambitions I believe, so I think it will pay off," Greenberg said of Harris, who sits on the House Committee on International Relations. The former secretary of state during Florida's 2000 presidential recount is a top Republican fundraiser who spent $3.4-million winning re-election to her Republican-dominated congressional district."

KIN OF 'ROBBI' STUFF WEINER'S WAR CHEST,
by David Seifman, New York Post, January 29, 2005
"
Relatives of a rabbi accused of misappropriating $700,000 in federal funds two years ago have contributed more than $20,000 to the mayoral campaign of Rep. Anthony Weiner. Campaign filings show that Menachim Balkany — son of Rabbi Milton Balkany — gave Weiner $4,500 on July 1, 2004. Two other Balkanys, Levi and Sarah, chipped in $4,000 apiece this month. That was near the $4,950 maximum allowed per individual under the city's campaign finance rules. Rabbi Balkany rounded up so much money for politicians in the 1990s that the good-government group Common Cause labeled him "the Brooklyn bundler." Politicians began steering clear of the rabbi after prosecutors in 2003 charged him with diverting $700,000 in federal funds to pay administrative expenses at two schools he operated in Brooklyn. Balkany avoided prosecution by agreeing to return the money to the Department of Housing & Urban Development and to engage in "good behavior" for six months. Since then, he has kept a relatively low profile. But his large extended family has continued to write large campaign checks. Two members of a family related to Balkany by marriage added $9,000 to Weiner's war chest. Records show Menachem and Tzippa Rubashkin each wrote checks for $4,500 on July 11, 2004 to Weiner's campaign ... After being questioned by The Post about the contributions yesterday, Weiner said he was giving the money back ... Weiner had previously returned $9,250 rounded up by the owner of a Brooklyn pharmacy after it was reported that some contributors had no idea their names were on money orders made out to the congressman's campaign. The Rubashkin family operates one of the nation's largest kosher meat packaging plants, AgriProcessors Inc. in Iowa. Last year, various Rubashkin family members contributed $20,000 to Florida Rep. Katharine Harris and another $20,000 to Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter. Last Dec. 1, the Iowa plant was cited for violations of the Clean Water Act."

[Take it from Ms. Glick "senior Middle East fellow at the Center for Security Policy in Washington, DC and the deputy managing editor of The Jerusalem Post": If you're sick of all the noise about the Holocaust 60 years after the fact, you are a certified "anti-Semite." Dare to call Israel a "Nazi state?" You're a bonafide "anti-Semite" times two. More and more, we are seeing Jews circling the Chosen People wagons and condemning as ANTI-SEMITES even Jews who dare to criticize Israel. The more Jewish hysterical madness broadens to smear everyone on the planet as an "anti-Semite" (including fellow Jews who don't fall into Zionist line), the closer we all are to overthrowing the stupid accusation as merely an inane censorship device -- or, more correctly, a pile of garbage. Jewish "anti-Semite" Karl Marx's comments on Jews, here.]
Jewish advocates of the new anti-Semitism,
by Caroline B. Glick, Town Hall, January 29, 2005
"The commemorations of the Holocaust this week by world leaders left many of their Jewish observors in a state of cognitive dissonance. German Foreign Minister Joscha Fischer provided a notworthy contribution to this confusion last Monday at the UN General Assembly's special session marking the sixtieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz death camp when he said that Israel could "always rely" on German support "because the security of its citizens will forever remain a non-negotiable fixture of German foreign policy." The problem with Fischer's statement is that it seems to bear no relations to the sentiments of the overwhelming majority of his countrymen. In a poll released in the days ahead of this week's Holocaust commemorations by the German University of Bielfeld, 62 percent of Germans said they were "sick of all the harping on about German crimes against the Jews." More than two thirds of Germans said they believe Israel is waging "a war of extermination" against the Palestinians. Jewish organizations often focus their attention on Holocaust sentiment among non-Jews to gauge anti-Semitic feelings. But while feelings about the Holocaust serve as an indicator of general sentiment about Jews, there are other indicators no less important or revealing. Sensitivity about the Holocaust may tell us what a person feels about Jews, but it may also simply tell us what that person feels about dead Jews.In the German case, the poll results are rather straightforward. The indicators line up. By crassly rejecting the need to recall the Holocaust while believing that Israel -- in waging a war against Palestinian terrorists whose declared aim is the physical destruction of the Jewish state -- is the modern day incarnation of Nazi Germany, Fischer's countrymen are clearly saying that they hate both dead and live Jews. But let's say that the poll results had been different. What if most Germans had said that they believe the Holocaust was a terrible crime that must be taught and remembered forever by the German people at the same time that over two thirds still claimed that Israel is acting like the Nazis. Would such a distinction mean that the two thirds of Germans that view Israel as a Nazi state make them less anti-Semitic? No, it would not.In Israel, politicians and media pundits reacted enthusiastically to the UN General Assembly special session last Monday in comemoration of the Holocaust. Israel's Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom told reporters "there is a change in the United Nations attitude towards Israel." But is this true? According to human rights attorney Anne Bayevsky, during last month month alone, the UN "adopted 22 resolutions condemning the State of Israel, and four country-specific resolutions criticizing the human-rights records of the other 190 U.N. member states ... Ever since the Holocaust, the rallying cry of Jews has been "Never Again!" But the enormity of the Holocaust must not blind us to its present-day mutation. Today the vast majority of anti-Semites are not calling for Jews to be deported to death camps. They are not calling for Jews to be shot before mass graves. They are calling for the destruction of the Jewish state. Sadly, and, as was the case in previous generations, they are seeking out and finding Jews who, like Karl Marx in his day, share their hatred for the Jewish people and willingly advance their evil agenda ... Today this is done by striking out at the main safeguard against such powerlessness – the State of Israel – criminalizing it as the modern-day incarnation of Nazi Germany. The role of Jewish anti-Semites in this campaign is to decouple the dead Jews murdered by the Nazis from the live Jews who live in, or support, the Jewish state.Such a Jew was found by the British conservative magazine The Spectator in one Anthony Lippman. Lippman is actually an Anglican, not a Jew, but as the child of Jewish Holocaust survivors, he will do. In a recent article, Lippman wrote hypnotically about his mother's sufferings in Auschwitz only to explain that the job of Holocaust survivors and their children is to speak out against... Israel. In his words, survivors have "a terrible responsibility – to live well in the name of those who did not live and to discourage the building of walls and bulldozing of villages. Even more than this, they – and all Jews – need to be the voice of conscience that will prevent Israel from adopting the mantle of oppressor, and to reject the label 'anti-Semite' for those who speak out against Israel's policies in the occupied territories." Another such Jew is Tony Judt. Since the start of the Palestinian terror war, Judt, a historian at New York University, has been outspoken in his rejection of Israel's right to exist. In a series of articles in The New York Review of Books, The Nation and The New Republic, Judt has led the charge in claiming that "the depressing truth is that Israel today is bad for the Jews," and that for Jews to feel good about themselves again Israel must cease to be a Jewish state – that is, Israel must cease to exist ... Another such Jew is the Israeli born conductor Daniel Barenboim. At a lecture at Columbia University last Monday, the same day that the UN held its special session on the Holocaust, Barenboim compared Theodore Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, to Adolf Hitler ... The 60th anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation is a good time to call for a similar Jewish condemnation of hate-filled Jews and those that use them to advance their anti-Semitic agenda ... These are not legitimate voices. These are not legitimate views. They are the views of deranged Jew-haters which, if listened to, will do nothing other than pave the way to the next calamity."

Israel's increasing reliance on the "anti-Semitism" defense,
By Nigel Parry, The Electronic Intifada, January 26, 2005
"[A]nyone critical of Israel's foreign policies towards the Palestinians is in danger of having their principled political stance represented as another form of Jew-hating. This is reminiscent of the bad old days of the 1980s, when even simple humanitarian observations about the plight of the Palestinians - if they actually made it onto the letters page of a newspaper - would result in a flood of letters attacking the writer as "anti-Semitic", with little or zero reference to the merits of their argument. Over the last several years these hysterical echoes, primarily intended to muddy discussion about the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict by silencing one side of it, have increasingly been heard. Anti-Semitism, as it was represented in the unabridged version of Webster's Third New International Dictionary in 2001, included one definition as, "opposition to Zionism: sympathy with opponents of the state of Israel." After being challenged, Webster's public response claimed the definition was based on "a small group of citations clustered in the years 1947-1952" in which anti-Semitism was linked to opposition to Israel or Zionism, arguing that the definition was a "relic" rather than any editorial commentary on current events. Was this true? Was the timing of this definition merely a coincidence? Was the researcher for this segment deliberately trying to turn up obscure references to impact the contemporary definition? Or were the several layers of editors that read the definition so inured by the increasing linkage between the two in common usage, that they let it go? We may never know the full story, but it seems unlikely to have been accidental, with at least some level of intent at some part of the process, perhaps combined with carelessness. The title of the concluding chapter in Alan Dershowitz's The Case for Israel (2003), "Israel - the Jew among Nations", is another example. Israel, a country with reportedly one of the most powerful armies in the world, which it does not hesitate to employ against Palestinians to facilitate the colonization of more Palestinian land, is not a human rights abuser, but rather a victim of our irrational hatred. It is not Israel's treatment of the Palestinians that is the issue. It is us, the rest of the world. We are so blind, according to the dark logic of this repertoire, that we cannot see that our concern for the fate of the Palestinians is merely a faux finish on our inner Nazi. This deliberate campaign of obfuscation through conflation of definitions is currently reverberating at international levels. In a recent analysis of the World Jewish Congress campaign for the adoption of a General Assembly resolution condemning anti-Semitism, published by EI on 25 January 2005, former UN official Laura Reanda concluded: "...the concern about anti-Semitism as a form of religious and ethnic intolerance (which could be combated by using existing international mechanisms), has transmogrified into an all-out campaign by conservative Jewish organizations to reject any criticism of the Israeli government and ultimately even to change the fundamental principles that still govern the international approach to the Israel/Palestine conflict." Increasingly, we see Israel moving away from a Luntz-type strategy into outright intimidation through character assassination. The further Israel moves away from defending its position and the more it relies on the strategy of demonizing the holders of contrary positions as 'Jew-haters' wearing liberal wool, the clearer it will be to all that the point is to ensure that the real issues are not addressed. It is not even as if this strategy is that well thought out, and examples of carelessness in the "criticism of Israel equals anti-Semitism" repertoire are not hard to find in the current knee-jerk environment."

Central question in British news: Do you see any flying Jewish pigs in the above image? Hmmm. Well, if there were a Star of David on the pig's butt, maybe. Hmmm. Definitely. I've decided. It's anti-Semitic. If we looked at the image under an electron microscope I bet that the Star of David is there.

[Playing the "anti-Semitism" card. The accusation of "anti-Semitism" has become a joke. It is tossed everywhere, at anyone whatsoever, and in every direction, always towards securing some sort of political (or other) leverage.]
Is Labour sinking towards anti-Semitism?,
by Benedict Brogan, Daily Mail (UK), January 29, 2005
"Labour was hit by another anti-Semitism row last night after party bosses refused to apologise for a 'tasteless' image poking fun at Michael Howard. A campaign poster showing two flying pigs superimposed with the faces of the Tory leader and Oliver Letwin - who are both Jewish - was circulated to activists. It triggered outrage among anti-Semitism campaigners who pointed out that the poster was released in the week that Tony Blair and world leaders united to remember the murder of six million Jews in the Holocaust. To Jews, the pig is considered unclean and such a direct visual association can be sharply offensive ... Of the three other images, one in particular is likely to fuel suspicions that Labour is flirting dangerously with anti-Semitic stereotypes. It shows Mr Howard clad in black, one hand outstretched and the other clutching a gold watch. To some the portayal will echo stage characterisations of Shylock, the Jewish money lender in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. The controversy marks the third time that Labour has found itself accused of allowing anti-Semitism to creep into its attacks against Mr Howard. Earlier this month Liam Fox referred Trade Minister Mike O'Brien to the Commission for Racial Equality over a personal attack on Mr Howard ... The Tories claimed there was a "distinct whiff of anti-Semitism" about an article Mr O'Brien wrote for the Muslim Weekly newspaper that questioned Mr Howard's support for Muslims. And last year Labour chairman Ian McCartney was criticised for describing Mr Letwin, the Shadow Chancellor, as a '21st century Fagin'. His reference to the character in the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, now widely seen as a racist portrait of a Jew, caused fury. On Thursday Mr Blair warned that the Holocaust did not start with gas chambers but with "a brick through the window of a Jewish business, desecration of a synagogue, the shout of racist abuse in the street". Labour sources vehemently denied any racist intention behind the flying pigs image. A spokesman said: "We reject absolutely suggestions that this poster is in any way anti-Semitic. What it certainly is, is anti-Tory." But rabbi Danny Rich, chief executive of Liberal Judaism, said: "This poster is irresponsible and it is hard to believe that its publishers do not intend to cause controversy" ... Mr Milburn said last week: "When they hear Michael Howard promising tax cuts, and promising extra spending on schools and hospitals, they look upwards and see skies full of flying pigs."

[The next time rich Jews bask in another multi-million dollar reconquest of European property lost in World War II, point them to this article:]
An Israeli Act of Theft--and State Stupidity,
Ha'aretz Editorial Board (Israel), posted here at Tikkun, January 21, 2005
"Injustice and stupidity in Jerusalem In July 2004, Israel's cabinet adopted a decision that was neither made public nor even published in the official government gazette, Reshumot: to apply the Absentee Property Law to East Jerusalem, and thereby to confiscate thousands of dunams of land from owners who live in the West Bank. The reason for the decision was security-related: Since in practice, West Bank residents are barred from entering East Jerusalem because of the intifada, the cabinet decided to enact an official measure that would prevent any use of these lands by their owners in the future as well, and would explicitly state that henceforth their property belongs to the State of Israel. Even though the owners live only a short distance away from their confiscated property, their names and addresses are known and no one doubts their ownership, the cabinet decided to label them "absentees" and apply the law that enabled the state to take over refugees' lands when the state was founded, a law which has never been used since. According to the law, enacted in 1950, every person who was outside of Israeli territory between November 29, 1947 and September 1, 1948 was considered an "absentee," and his assets were transferred to the Custodian of Absentee Property, with no possibility of compensation or appeal. But even though the Absentee Property Law remained in force, successive Israeli governments decided not to apply it to annexed East Jerusalem, because of the injustice this would wreak. The decision to once again apply this law has caused thousands of Palestinians, including many who live right next to their confiscated lands, to lose property overnight worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and for which no one intends to compensate them. It is impossible not to deem the cabinet's decision theft, as well as an act of state stupidity of the highest order. Israel has already seized land and property from the Palestinians during the years of occupation, reducing their living space in order to establish settlements in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The person responsible for many of these unnecessary projects was Ariel Sharon, both in his governmental roles and as someone who himself bought a house in the Arab Quarter of East Jerusalem. One might have thought that such activity would cease when Sharon had recognized the need to divide this land between the two nations. The arbitrary confiscation of property, without suitable compensation, contradicts this trend. An article by Meron Rapaport in today's Haaretz Magazine relates that when East Jerusalem was annexed in 1968, then attorney general Meir Shamgar decided not to apply the Absentee Property Law to real estate in Jerusalem that was owned by West Bank residents. The decision to refrain from paying compensation for expropriated land today, dozens of years after the state was established - which, regrettably, was made with the consent of Attorney General Menachem Mazuz - does no honor to the state. It is also impossible to accept the secrecy with which the cabinet makes fateful decisions of this nature, which unnecessarily damage the fabric of relations between Israel and the Palestinians. The Absentee Property Law, which might have been tolerable at the time of the state's establishment and the War of Independence, is inappropriate 55 years later."

[Jews don't want to hear this: they'll start screaming hysterically and cover their ears. Shock! An article tries to humanize -- and fathom -- the desperation that motivates "suicide bombers."]
A different way of death,
by Terry Eagleton, Guardian (UK), January 26, 2005
"While insurgents have been blowing themselves apart in Israel and Iraq, a silence has prevailed about what suicide bombing actually involves. Like hunger strikers, suicide bombers are not necessarily in love with death. They kill themselves because they can see no other way of attaining justice; and the fact that they have to do so is part of the injustice ... Suicide bombers also die in the name of a better life for others; it is just that, unlike martyrs, they take others with them in the process. The martyr bets his life on a future of justice and freedom; the suicide bomber bets your life on it. But both believe that a life is only worth living if it contains something worth dying for. On this theory, what makes existence meaningful is what you are prepared to relinquish it for. This used to be known as God; in modern times it is mostly known as the nation. For Islamic radicals it is both inseparably. Blowing yourself up for political reasons is a complex symbolic act, one that mixes despair and defiance. It proclaims that even death is preferable to your wretched way of life. The act of self-dispossession writes dramatically large the self-dispossession that is your routine existence. Laying violent hands on yourself is a more graphic image of what your enemy does to you anyway. At the same time, the bomber forces a contrast between the extreme kind of self-determination involved in taking his own life and the lack of such self-determination in his everyday existence. If he could live in the way he dies, he would not need to die. At least his death can be his death, and thus a taste of freedom. The only form of sovereignty left to you is the power to dispose of your own death. Suicide, as Dostoevsky recognised, means the death of God, since you usurp his divine monopoly over life and death. What more breathtaking form of omnipotence than to do away with yourself for all eternity? Suicide bombers and hunger strikers are out to transform weakness into power. Because they are ready to die while their enemies are not, they score a spiritual victory over them. The ultimate freedom is not to fear death. If you no longer fear it, political power can have no hold over you. Those with nothing to lose are deeply dangerous. But suicide bombers also cheat their antagonists of the only aspect of themselves that they can control: their bodies. By depriving their masters of this manipulable part of themselves, they become invulnerable. Nothing is less masterable than nothing. By slipping through the fingers of power, leaving it grasping at thin air, they force it to betray its own vacuousness."

At special General Assembly session, United Nations remembers Holocaust,
by Rachel Pomerance, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, January 25, 2005
"For the first time in its history, the United Nations allowed a religious prayer on its premises. But even more surprising than the deviation from decorum was the prayer itself — El Malei Rachamim, a Jewish hymn for the dead — followed by the Israeli national anthem. Sandwiched between a special U.N. General Assembly session marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the launch of an in-house exhibit commemorating that liberation, the prayer signaled the lengths to which the international body has gone this year to mark the Holocaust. “The tragedy of the Jewish people was unique,” U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said at the special session Monday morning, becoming the first U.N. secretary-general to place the Holocaust in a Jewish context, according to Eve Epstein, vice president of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy. “We must be on the watch for any revival of anti-Semitism and ready to act against the new forms of it that are happening today,” Annan said. Annan took a leading role in lobbying for Monday’s session, which Israel had requested. He also overturned U.N. protocol to permit recitation of the prayer and Israel’s national anthem Monday evening — neither prayers nor anthems are permitted at the United Nations."

Executive Faces Uphill Battle in His Suits Over Anonymous Web Attacks,
by Jessica M. Walker, Yahoo! Finance, January 28, 2005
"Like clockwork each day, someone who calls himself or herself Wolfblitzzer0 logs on to RagingBull.com, a stock-talk Internet message board, and posts slurs about Michael J. Zwebner, the chief executive of Miami Beach-based Universal Communication Systems. Wolfblitzzer0's allegations have covered business practices, political conspiracies, and personal misdemeanors. In many posts, Wolfblitzzer0 accuses Zwebner of dirty business dealings and nefarious interactions with the Israeli government. One post accused Zwebner of claiming to keep kosher while secretly eating cheeseburgers, which are a Jewish dietary no-no because they combine meat and dairy. Zwebner, who holds joint British-Israeli citizenship and splits his time between Tel Aviv and Miami Beach, has shown no tolerance for such cybersmearing. Since September 2003, Zwebner has aggressively fought back, filing five lawsuits in U.S. District Court in Miami in retaliation for comments on RagingBull.com, which is operated by Waltham, Mass.-based Internet network provider Lycos. The five suits include a class action trademark case and a class action defamation case against Lycos, and a fraud suit and a libel suit against a variety of individual posters. He also filed a defamation claim against CNN, Turner Broadcasting and the real Wolf Blitzer, CNN's high-profile newsman, for failing to stop Wolfblitzzer0 from misappropriating Blitzer's name ... His latest suit, filed Jan. 19 in U.S. District Court in Miami, alleges that postings by Wolfblitzzer0 and other posters have damaged his reputation, driven down his company's share price and embarrassed him and his family. Universal Communications Systems was founded by Zwebner in 2001. It began as a telecommunications company and recently branched out into developing a technology that extracts water vapor from air to make drinking water. The lawsuit also accuses Lycos of an offense that could be criminally prosecuted -- cyberstalking. No criminal charges have been filed ... Zwebner's attorney, John H. Faro of Faro & Associates in Miami ... acknowledged that Wolfblitzzer0's comments about Zwebner might go beyond a desire to manipulate the stock market. He said some of the posted hostility toward Zwebner could be related to "some business deals that didn't go forward." He didn't elaborate on those deals ... In the defamation suit against CNN, filed Jan. 7, Zwebner asserts that CNN and Wolf Blitzer should have acted to end the postings, since the name Wolf Blitzer was the proprietary interest of CNN and it therefore had an obligation to police its use."

Cheney criticized for Auschwitz attire,
Yahoo! News, January 29, 2005
"Vice President Dick Cheney has raised eyebrows for wearing an olive-drab parka, hiking boots and knit ski cap to represent the United States at a solemn ceremony remembering the liberation of Auschwitz. Other leaders at the event in Poland on Thursday marking the 60th anniversary of the death camp's liberation, such as French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin, wore dark, formal overcoats and dress shoes or boots. "The vice president, however, was dressed in the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower," Robin Givhan, The Washington Post's fashion writer, wrote in the newspaper's Friday editions."

PennDOT seeking input on Juniata River bridge,
by Michael Dawson, The Sentinel (Lewiston, PA), January 28, 2005
"Community forums will help state transportation officials determine what will become of the Juniata River bridge between Mifflintown and Mifflin boroughs.“Through the public meetings, PennDOT will be looking to get a feel from the community of how the bridge is being used,” said PennDOT District 2 spokesperson, Marla Fannin, noting the meetings will be held within the next three months. No dates have been set. PennDOT plans to replace the almost 70-year-old bridge in what Fannin referred to as a “slightly different location.” The exact locale has not been determined. Due to the age of the bridge and various safety issues, the bridge needs to be rehabilitated, said project manager Erik Brown. The bridge’s clearance at 13 feet, 7 inches is below the standard 14 feet, 6 inches. Additionally, the bridge lacks sufficient shoulder space, he said. Any replacement or rehabilitation of the bridge will not occur for some time.“It’s fairly well down the road,” Fannin said. “But we are well aware of the significance it has to the community.” Brown said PennDOT knows of the pedestrian use of the bridge, particularly by members of the Hispanic community who work at the Empire Kosher plant outside Mifflintown Borough."

McAleese apologises over N.Irish Nazi row,
Reuters, January 29, 2005
"
Irish President Mary McAleese has apologised to Protestants in Northern Ireland for remarks in which she appeared to compare anti-Catholic prejudice in the province with the Nazi persecution of Jews. Her comments, made on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp, drew a furious reaction from Protestant politicians in the province, who accused her of vilifying their community. "What I said, I undoubtedly said clumsily," said McAleese, a Belfast Catholic who was re-elected for a second seven-year term in the largely ceremonial head of state role last year."

Israeli defense chief tells French parliament Iran at point of nuclear no-return,
Space War, January 28, 2005
"Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has told French lawmakers that Iran is at "the point of no-return" on building nuclear weapons, according to a transcript of his remarks to the National Assembly made public Friday. Mofaz, who warned openly in London this week that Iran would not be permitted to build a nuclear bomb, has in the past said that Israel has operational plans in place for a strike against Iranian targets ... Even if Iran recognized Israel's existence, Mofaz said "the possession of a nuclear weapon by an extremist regime is not acceptable." "The danger is great," he said. "The possession of non-conventional weapons could allow Iran to carry out terrorist actions with complete impunity and destabilize the free world." Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned earlier this week that any attack against the country would be met with an "astonishing" retaliation. The Islamic republic also responded to the Israeli allegations that it was close to developing a nuclear weapon, saying the latest accusations were designed to shift attention away from Israel's own weapons and its "terror" against Palestinians ... On Monday, President George W. Bush said he could not rule out using force if Iran failed to rein in its nuclear plans. Vice President Dick Cheney also warned that Israel might launch a pre-emptive strike on its own to shut down Iran's nuclear program."

Photos portray Jewish ritual of immersion,
By BARBARA SCHLICHTMAN, The Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA), January 29, 2005
""The Mikvah Project" explores one of Judaism's most intimate ceremonies through photographs and narratives. Beyond striking underwater photography, the artists share women's stories in a manner that respects the secrecy of this immersion while exploring what this ancient tradition means today. The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 22 at the LSU School of Art Gallery, 111 Foster Hall. Photographer Janice Rubin and writer Leah Lax, both of Houston, will speak at 6 tonight in Room 103 of the Design Building at LSU. Mikvah is an in-ground pool traditionally used by married and to-be-married Jewish women primarily after their menstrual cycles to herald resuming or beginning sexual relations. It was a private practice passed down from mother to daughter. Mikvah is also used in the conversion process to Judaism ... Rubin said that she wanted to use her camera to express that experience of transformation. Women described intensely private moments and deep prayer. They described trying to balance their desire for independence and their devotion to their faith. One woman, dealing with years of pain and illness, described herself as a "howling, hurt, trapped animal." Then, when she slipped under water, she became a "spiritual person." "The Mikvah Project" is a combination of photographs of anonymous Orthodox Jewish women and their narratives and photographs of models enacting the actual immersion. Out of respect for the ceremony, there are no visible faces or frontal nudity in the photographs. English Professor Sharon Aronfsky Weltman was a key person in bringing the project to LSU. She said that she wanted the exhibit in Baton Rouge primarily because of its sheer beauty, plus Baton Rouge does not often get art with this kind of Jewish content."

JNF, treasury seek formula for continued Jews-only land sales,
By Yuval Yoaz, Haaretz (Israel), January 28, 2005
"The Jewish National Fund and the Finance Ministry are currently
trying to draft a new agreement that would separate the JNF from the state, thereby allowing it to continue selling land to Jews only
. The negotiations - which are being backed by Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon
, Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Vice Premier Ehud
Olmert
, who is responsible for the Israel Lands Administration -
have made considerable progress, and the agreement is likely to be
signed in the coming months, according to sources involved in the
talks. In 1961, the JNF signed an agreement with the state under which the ILA assumed responsibility for managing and marketing all JNF lands.
However, since the JNF is a private organization that was explicitly
founded to serve the interests of the Jewish people, the ILA refused
to sell these lands to non-Jews, at the JNF's insistence."

ARIEL HAILS ABBAS' GUN BAN,
by Uri Dan, New York Post, January 28, 2005
"The new Palestinian leadership yesterday banned civilians from carrying weapons, and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said the conditions are right for a "historic breakthrough" toward peace.
Sharon said he was "very satisfied" with efforts so far by Yasser Arafat's successor, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Among those steps was the scheduled deployment today of Palestinian police to deter terrorist attacks from the southern Gaza Strip. Another step came yesterday when Palestinian officials issued a decree banning civilians from holding weapons — an order that would make illegal the arsenals of terrorist groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad."

[Again, this nuthouse stuff sets a precedent. If someone emphatically DOES NOT want kosher food, and it gets serves to them, it is obviously time for a law suit. If it was and there had been no posted information that it was so, where's a good lawyer?]
FLOWERS FOODS ANNOUNCES FINAL SETTLEMENT,
Flower Foods
"Flowers Foods today announced the final settlement of the nationwide class action lawsuit, Schiller, et al. v. Flowers Foods Inc., in Wake County, N.C. Under the terms of the settlement, Flowers will donate $1 million in cash and $1.5 million in bread products to charitable organizations. In addition, as part of this settlement, Flowers Foods sincerely apologizes to all individuals who purchased kosher pie shells that were manufactured at Flowers’ Pembroke, N.C., plant. Flowers Foods acknowledges and regrets that on a few occasions during 2000 and 2001, the company ran some non-kosher product on its kosher pie shell line at its Pembroke, N.C., plant. The company also regrets that it did not provide complete information to its customers.Flowers Foods no longer manufactures pie shells and the Pembroke plant closed in 2001. Therefore, there is no risk of this incident ever being repeated in the future. Jewish group to sue Vatican for baptismal records,
BY CAROL EISENBERG, Chicago Sun-Times, January 27, 2005
"A Bronx-based Jewish group announced plans Thursday to sue the Vatican to force the opening of secret archives that might identify thousands of Jewish children baptized as Catholics to save them from the Nazis, and never returned to their families."As long as the children of all those murdered at Auschwitz do not know their true identities, and as along as the murdered at Auschwitz have descendents who still do not know their true lineage, how can we truly say that Auschwitz has been liberated," said Rabbi Schmuel Herzfeld, vice president of the Coalition for Jewish Concerns. "We want our children back."

Auschwitz formalities rile Israeli press,
BBC (UK), January 27, 2005
"Israeli newspapers have responded to the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz with extensive and mostly critical comment on how the event is being marked. Several papers appear dissatisfied with this week's remembrance ceremonies, with one commenting that speeches are easier than action. Another paper looks at the significance of the Holocaust for Israel's sense of identity. "The 27 January has become the all-European Holocaust day," one commentator says in the popular Maariv, but warns that simply holding ceremonies may not be enough."If those ceremonies are summed up in rituals of formally doing one's duty, we do not need them. We do not need forgiveness ceremonies. Especially since we are not allowed to forgive." Referring to the songs of remembrance sung at many ceremonies, the commentator adds that "60 years after Auschwitz, singing is possible and necessary providing it truly expresses pain and hope". The special United Nations memorial session on Monday attracts strong criticism in the Jerusalem Post for being what it regards as an empty gesture. "The UN General Assembly for the first time held a special session to commemorate the liberation of the Nazi death camps and the Holocaust. Does this mean that the UN is no longer hostile to the Jewish people?" the paper asks. Its answer is clear: "No, it does not." The daily-of-record Haaretz takes a similar, although less categorical line in its editorial. "Despite the importance of such ceremonies, it is much easier to give speeches condemning anti-Semitism and its horrors than to take action to eliminate the phenomenon." Moving away from the ceremonies themselves, Yediot Aharonot, Israel's most widely read newspaper, outlines in its editorial what it believes the anniversary as a whole to mean for Israel. "This is the message that should come out of Israel and go to all corners of the world: Every Jew is our responsibility. The state of Israel is the insurance company of the Jewish people."

Labour pig poster 'anti-Semitic'. The Labour Party has been accused of anti-Semitism over a poster depicting Michael Howard and Oliver Letwin - who are both Jewish - as flying pigs,
BBC News, January 28, 2005Z
"Prospective Tory candidate Andrew Mennear, whose Finchley constituency contains a large Jewish community, branded it "tasteless" and offensive. The poster shows the two men's faces superimposed on winged pigs and says "the day the Tory sums add up". Labour said the poster was "not anti-Jewish, but anti-Tory". 'Maximum impact' It is one of four designs e-mailed to Labour members, who were asked to vote for their favourite. Mr Mennear, who was sent the e-mail by a friend, said he had been "shocked" by the image and had shown it to friends who were similarly horrified. He said there was nothing more distasteful for a Jewish person than to be associated with a pig. "I am not suggesting there is any deliberate intent, but these sort of things can cause great offence. It clearly wasn't thought through. "It is possible the posters were designed for maximum impact, but this one clearly overstepped the mark and should be withdrawn." 'Serious point' The campaign was particularly insensitive as it had come out at the same time as Holocaust Day, a "difficult" time for many Jewish people, Mr Mennear added. A Labour spokesman denied the campaign was anti-Semitic. "As we said at the time the James report (the Tory backed inquiry into possible public spending savings) was published pigs will fly before the Tory's sums will add up. This poster is making a serious point," he said. A Conservative Party spokesman said: "While the Conservatives are concentrating on the issues that matter to people, such as lower taxes and controlled immigration, it is clear to see that the Labour Party is not. People will not be fooled." [More at: This is London]

Auschwitz: Putin Fails to Mention the Jews,
by Herb Keinon and David Horovitz, Jerusalem Post, January 28, 2005
"Israeli officials were miffed that Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his speech at Auschwitz, never mentioned the Jews who were murdered there. "It's incredible," said one official, voicing his dismay that Putin mentioned the 600,000 Russian soldiers who died liberating Poland, and the 27 million Soviets killed during the war, but not the 1.3 million Jews killed at Auschwitz. One senior official in Jerusalem, who was unaware that Putin didn't mention Jews during his speech at Auschwitz, advised against looking for too much meaning in this omission. "He has proven more determined in his policy against anti-Semitism than any other Russian leader," the official said. "We should judge him by what he does, rather than by what he says." Earlier in the day, at a speech he delivered at an international forum in Krakow, Putin said he was shamed by manifestations of anti-Semitism in Russia and vowed to confront such bigotry "by force and public opinion." ... Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger also drew a direct line from Nazism to modern terrorism – specifically Palestinian terrorism. "Our enemies continue to pursue us, even in the Holy Land of Israel," Metzger said, "and we have seen survivors of the fire of Auschwitz slaughtered together with their families on Seder nights in Netanya, children murdered on buses on their way to school, entire families murdered in restaurants, in cars, and in the streets."

Israel works to get Hezbollah on EU's list of terror groups,
by Aluf Benn, Haaretz (Israel), January 28, 2005
"The Foreign Ministry has been making a diplomatic effort in recent weeks to convince the European Union to include Hezbollah on its list of terrorist organizations. Success in this endeavor will significantly damage the legitimacy of the Lebanese organization and is likely to make it difficult for the group to raise funds in Europe. For some time, the EU has hesitated to heed Israel's call, even though a number of Hezbollah leaders, including Imad Mughniye, an international terrorist, have been included on an EU list of individual terrorists."

Female interrogators 'taunted terror suspects',

"Female interrogators tried to break Muslim detainees at the US prison camp in Guantanamo Bay by sexual touching, wearing miniskirts and thong underwear and, in one case, smearing a Saudi man's face with fake menstrual blood, an insider has stated. The reports follow claims that Sydney man Mamdouh Habib, who arrived home yesterday after being kept three years in the camp without charge, was tied down while a woman dripped menstrual blood on him after he refused to co-operate with interrogators. A draft manuscript obtained by Associated Press details how the US military used women as part of physical and psychological interrogation tactics designed to make suspected terrorists talk. The author is a former US army sergeant, Erik Saar, 29, who worked as a translator at the camp in Cuba from December 2002 to June 2003. He told AP he witnessed about 20 interrogations and said that about three months after his arrival he started to notice disturbing practices. One female civilian contractor used a special outfit that included a miniskirt, thong underwear and a bra during late-night interrogations with prisoners, mostly Muslim men who consider it a sin to have close contact with women who are not their wives. Beginning in April 2003, "there hung a short skirt and thong underwear on the hook on the back of the door" of one interrogation team's office, Saar writes. "Later I learned this outfit was used for interrogations by one of the female civilian contractors ... on a team which conducted interrogations in the middle of the night on Saudi men who were refusing to talk." Some Guantanamo prisoners who have been released say they were tormented by prostitutes, and a similar claim was made this week by Habib's lawyer Steven Hopper. In another case, Saar describes a female military interrogator questioning a 21-year-old Saudi detainee who had allegedly taken flying lessons in Arizona before the September 11 terror attacks. The interrogator wanted to "break him", Saar writes, describing how she removed her uniform top to expose a tight-fitting T-shirt and began taunting the detainee, touching her breasts, rubbing them against the prisoner's back and commenting on his apparent erection. The detainee looked up and spat in her face, Saar recalls. The interrogator left the room to ask a Muslim linguist how she could break the prisoner's reliance on God. The linguist told her to tell the detainee she was menstruating, touch him, and then make sure to turn off the water in his cell so he could not wash. Strict Islamic law forbids contact with women other than a man's wife, and with menstruating women, who are considered unclean. "The concept was to make the detainee feel that after talking to her he was unclean and was unable to go before his God in prayer and gain strength," Saar writes. The interrogator used ink from a red pen to fool the detainee. "She started to place her hands in her pants as she walked behind the detainee. As she circled around him he could see she was taking her hand out of her pants. When it became visible the detainee saw what appeared to be red blood on her hand. "She then wiped the red ink on his face. He shouted at the top of his lungs, spat at her and lunged forward so fiercely that he broke loose from one ankle shackle. "He began to cry like a baby," the report continues, noting that the interrogator left, saying: "Have a fun night in your cell without any water to clean yourself." Saar did not provide the manuscript of his book or approach AP, but he confirmed the authenticity of nine draft pages the news agency obtained. "I have struggled with this because the detainees, their families and much of the world will think this is a religious war, based on some of the techniques used, even though it is not the case," he told AP. His book, titled Inside the Wire, is due out this year."
