"German MEPs called for a Europe-wide ban of the symbol after Prince Harry wore it on a fancy dress costume. But Hindu Forum spokesman Ramesh Kallidai said the swastika had been a Hindu good luck charm for centuries. The group will stage public awareness workshops across the UK and lobby politicians in an attempt to educate the public and prevent a ban, he said. "It's the second most sacred symbol in the Hindu tradition which has been used for 5,000 years to ward off evil," Mr Kallidai said. The forum would make a particular effort to get the message across to Jewish groups, he added. "After all it is the Jewish anguish that needs to be considered. They were the community that was most affected by the misuse of the swastika so naturally they would have concerns. "Hindus use the swastika merely as a religious sacrament, to express their devotion to God, surely nobody can have any objections to that," he said. 'Mirror image' Displaying the swastika is illegal in Germany. However, Mr Kallidai said a similar ban in the UK would have an adverse affect on Hindus who regarded a swastika in much the same way as a Christian viewed a cross. "You find it in houses, temples and in portraits of Hindu gods. A swastika is even painted on the head of a baby who's just had his first hair-cutting sacrament," he said. The Hindu swastika faces to the right, unlike the one adopted by the Nazis which faces to the left. It is also traditionally red, a colour regarded as auspicious by Hindus. "Just because at a particular moment in history one section of society used it, or a mirror image, to unleash xenophobic ideology does not mean Hindus should be punished," Mr Kallidai said. "It's like saying the Ku Klux Klan burn crosses so therefore let's ban the use of crosses worldwide." 'Positive symbol' The Hindu Forum's campaign has gained backing from other groups. Maganbhai Patel of Leicester's Hindu Association said the general public's confusion needed to be addressed. "Hindus have been using the swastika for centuries, whereas it was only adopted by Hitler comparatively recently, in the 1920s and 1930s. "We use it for marriage ceremonies and also for other religious ceremonies and events," Mr Patel said. And Kapil Dudakia, of Milton Keynes Hindu Association, said the swastika was viewed "positively" by billions of people around the world including followers of the Buddhist and Jain faiths. "When I got married, literally as soon as you entered the hall where the marriage took place you saw swastikas everywhere. They were also on the invitation cards," he said. "It's only in certain quarters of the western world where you've got these very negative connotations. "What we've got to do is separate the evil of Hitler and his ideology from the symbol of the swastika which actually means something quite different," Mr Dudakia said."

Israel Banks Called Lax on Holocaust Fund Returns,

"Israeli banks holding assets from European Jews killed in the Holocaust failed to make a determined effort to return the holdings to their heirs, and when they were returned, they were not returned at their proper value, according to a report of the Israeli Parliament, or Knesset, released Tuesday.The Israeli government, as custodian for a large part of the assets, also failed to make a serious effort to maintain their value or to return them to survivors or heirs, the report said. "What we have discovered, in particular the attitude of the banks, has filled us with disgust," said the chairwoman of a parliamentary committee, Colette Avital, a Labor Party legislator. "Neither the state nor the banks paid enough attention to this problem," Ms. Avital said. "We don't think the state of Israel should act differently from what we've demanded from other countries." Under pressure from the United States and Israel, the banks and governments of Switzerland and Austria have worked to disclose the accounts of those believed to be Holocaust victims and survivors, so assets can be returned to relatives. Switzerland, for example, agreed to pay compensation of $1.25 billion after more than 54,000 dormant accounts traced to World War II or earlier were found in Swiss banks. The Israeli report, after four years of investigation, found that 9,000 people or their heirs were eligible for compensation from the Israeli government and the banks, amounting to an estimated $31.5 million. Of those 9,000 names, about 6,000 were listed as victims of the Holocaust by Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust museum ... According to the committee, the banks did not take sufficiently assiduous action to locate accounts even when asked to do so by Holocaust survivors or the heirs of Holocaust victims ... Ms. Avital, the committee chairwoman, said: "There was no intentional act to keep people from getting their money. But there was callousness and insensitivity." Efraim Zuroff, the Israel director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, called the report "a sad commentary on the inability or unwillingness of Israel to deal with these issues, while demanding that other countries do so." He criticized the attitude of the state's business and political leaders. "The powers that be have been stonewalling this again and again," Mr. Zuroff said. "This is only a committee report, a revelation of the scope of the problem. This is not the Knesset passing a law forcing the banks and the custodian to return the money. For that, there has to be political will."

"In time for the sixtieth anniversary next April of the liberation of Buchenwald, the concentration camp will begin marketing souvenirs designed by Bauhaus University students: plaques, stationery embedded with minute stones and sticks gathered from the camp, pamphlets retelling certain victims’ life histories, clear buttons reading Buchenwald inspired by thousands of unearthed buttons, replanted beech sprigs cut from trees on site, and wristbands. This latest development in Shoa business is justified by Buchenwald Memorial Director Volkhard Knigge as addressing a need for new methods of communicating the Holocaust across generational divides. “This generation has grown up in a different culture, with different mediums,” he says in a New York Times article, “At the Gift Shop: Souvenirs from Buchenwald” (September 15, 2004). “We need to…give them the chance to formulate their own way of accessing. Otherwise we’re speaking a language they don’t understand' ... From what generation would anyone of even limited sensitivity purchase, write on, and mail to a friend or enemy stationery embedded with particles of a concentration camp, aside from purposes of black humor? Who invents such a medium much less considers it a meaningful enough capture of the Holocaust to sell it?"

The issue below is that Jewish "defense agencies" are nakedly political lobbying organizations that frame themselves -- by virture of the word "Jew" -- to beyond public criticism. "Dear Abe [Foxman, Anti-Defamation League], David [Harris, American Jewish Committee], and Neil [Goldstein, American Jewish Congress]: ... Constitutional rights — religious liberty (and the separation of church and state), civil rights, privacy and civil liberties — have long been the pillars of your agencies’ work. In 1923, the American Jewish Committee filed its first amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief in the Supreme Court case of Pierce v. Society of Sisters, when the court heard objections to an Oregon statute that required mandatory enrollment in public schools, thereby targeting Catholic parochial schools. In 1948, the ADL filed its first amicus brief in Shelley v. Kraemer, a pivotal civil rights case before the Supreme Court in which the court found that discriminatory property ownership laws were unconstitutional. More recent, in 2000, the American Jewish Congress filed an amicus brief in another Supreme Court case, Dale v. Boy Scouts of America, urging the court to uphold an appellate decision that a scoutmaster could not be discriminated against based on his sexual orientation. These are merely three of the hundreds of examples when each of your agencies looked to the judicial process to defend our rights as Jews and promote ideals of civil rights, religious freedom and equality for all. How are our fundamental rights endangered today? Not through any one case or on any one issue, but rather through an attempt to radically reconstitute the entire federal court system with a series of lifetime appointments that would push the courts far to the right not just of the “center” but of the entire mainstream political spectrum ... Now, despite major opposition and congressional testimony that further discredited these individuals, President Bush has pledged to nominate seven of the 10 filibustered nominees in the 109th Congress. These returnees include: ... Janice Rodgers Brown, who criticized what she called “the rather uninformative metaphor of the ‘wall of separation’ between church and state,” and held that the First Amendment shielded racial slurs in the workplace even in cases when they escalated to illegal race discrimination. And William Pryor, who called Roe v. Wade “the worst abomination of constitutional law in our history” and criticized Supreme Court rulings that uphold “the so-called wall of separation between church and state.”

"Israel’s Foreign Ministry has expressed concern over growing anti-Semitism in Russia after a wave of attacks including an assault on a rabbi by six skinheads and the desecration of 40 graves at a Jewish cemetery. Sources close to the Israeli ambassador in Russia sharply criticized the way the Moscow authorities were dealing with the attacks. “Sometimes it seems like we’re working with drunks,” Israeli Defense Forces radio quoted the source as saying on Thursday. Government officials in Jerusalem even considered reprimanding the Russian ambassador in Israel; however, the meeting was postponed for fear of opening a second front against the Russians while the crisis over reported Russian missile sales to Syria remains unresolved. Sources at the Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv expressed regret over the recent incidents and condemned all manifestations of religious hatred. Moscow prosecutors said Thursday that three men had been detained on suspicion of beating Rabbis Alexander Lakshin and Eliahu Fomiuk in a Moscow underpass late Friday night. Meanwhile, earlier last week, Russia’s chief Rabbi Berl Lazar criticized a U.S. State Department report alleging rising anti-Semitism in Russia, and noted instead positive improvements in his country."

"The U.S. military is resorting to collective punishment tactics in Iraq similar to those used by Israeli troops in the occupied territories of Palestine,residents say. Military bulldozers have mown down palm groves in the rural al-Dora farming area on the outskirts of Baghdad, residents say. Electricity has been cut, the local fuel station destroyed, and the access road blocked. The U.S. action comes after resistance fighters attacked soldiers from this area several weeks back. "The Americans were attacked from this field, then they returned and started cutting down all the trees," says Kareem, a local mechanic, pointing to a pile of burnt date palms in a bulldozed field. "None of us knows any fighters; we all know they are coming here from other areas to attack the Americans, but we are the people who suffer from this." The military action follows a similar round of attacks and retaliation earlier this month. U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt told reporters then that the military had launched Operation Iron Grip in the area to send "a very clear message to anybody who thinks that they can run around Baghdad without worrying about the consequences of firing RPGs [rocket propelled grenades], firing mortars." Kimmitt said "there is a capability in the air that can quickly respond against anybody who would want to harm Iraqi citizens or coalition forces." Then as now, local people denied any knowledge of harboring resistance fighters. And now, as then, they say they have to pay the price. "They destroyed our fences, and now there are wolves attacking our animals," said Mohammed, a schoolboy. "They destroyed much of our farming equipment, and the worst is they cut our electricity. They come by here every night and fire their weapons to frighten us."

"The Sharon government implemented the Absentee Property Law in East Jerusalem last July, contrary to Israeli government policy, since Israeli law was extended to East Jerusalem after the Six Day War. The law means that thousands of Palestinians who live in the West Bank will lose ownership of their property in East Jerusalem. Government officials estimate the assets total thousands of dunam, while other estimates say they could add up to half of all East Jerusalem property. The government decision in July confirms a decision reached in the ministerial committee for Jerusalem affairs a month earlier. The decision was presented to the prime minister and attorney general and met with their approval, but the decision was not publicized until now and is not listed on the Web site of the Prime Minister's Office ... With the recent construction of the fence in the Jerusalem region, Palestinian landholders from Bethlehem and Beit Jala requested permission to continue working their fields, which are within Jerusalem's municipal jurisdiction. The state's response stated that the lands "no longer belong to them, but have been handed over to the Custodian for Absentee Property." At stake are thousands of dunam of agricultural land on which the Palestinians grew olives and grapes throughout the years. "These people's property was always considered absentee assets, but so long as no fence existed, these people could get to their property and everything was fine from their standpoint," said a senior judicial official involved in the case. "The fence is the result of terrorism. It's not fair that a man becomes an absentee because his tie to his land has been cut without his doing. But morality is one thing, and what is written in our laws another." The Palestinian landholders and their Israeli lawyers term it a "land grab," and also worry that nascent Housing Ministry plans will build on part of absentees' land."

"The Sharon government intends to strip thousands of West Bank Palestinians of their property in occupied East Jerusalem, according to the Israeli press quoting newly released government documents. At stake are thousands of donoms of land belonging to Palestinians who live in the West Bank and are now unable to access their land due to Israel's separation barrier. The decision, reached by the Ministerial Committee for Jerusalem Affairs in June of 2004, and approved by Prime Minister Sharon and his attorney-general a month later, has not been publicised until now. By some estimates, the total land to be expropriated could add up to half of all East Jerusalem property. The move is based on the Israeli Absentee Property Law of 1950, which holds that assets of Jerusalemite Palestinians who were in the West Bank and Gaza Strip at the time of the 1948 War would be expropriated by the state of Israel, without the absentee being eligible for compensation ... By all accounts, the Israeli ministry of interior is using land expropriations, identity-card seizure, exorbitant taxes and difficult-to-obtain building, family-reunion and residency permits to slowly force Palestinian residents out of the city.A law passed by former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in the late 1990s, declared that any Palestinian who has not lived in the city for seven continuous years loses his residency rights, for example. The Netanyahu law, whose time limit has since been changed to three years, does not apply to Israeli Jews."

"A California atheist asked the U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday to keep Protestant ministers from saying prayers at President Bush's inauguration. Michael Newdow of Sacramento asked a federal judge last week to issue an injunction against the planned prayers, saying they were an unconstitutional violations of the separation of church and state. When the judge refused, saying Newdow was unlikely to win on the merits at trial, Newdow appealed that ruling to a federal appeals court in Washington. The appeals court refused to issue an injunction before hearing Newdow's case. Tuesday's emergency request to the Supreme Court asks for an injunction pending appeal. Newdow is best known for challenging the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance on behalf of his elementary school-age daughter. The Supreme Court ruled last term that Newdow could not bring the challenge because he did not have custody of his daughter."

"The head of Africa Israel, Lev Leviev, began his conquest of Manhattan with a series of acquisitions on Wall Street, turning tower blocks into exclusive apartments - and now he's set his sight on commercial real estate in Tribeca. The company announced Monday that it has successfully raised $120 million through an offering of liberty bonds. The proceeds will be use to buy a 21-story high-rise with 352 apartments for rent. The building, Africa Israel's 15th project in New York and sixth in Manhattan itself, is on the corner of Broadway and Leonard streets, in Tribeca. Africa Israel CEO Pini Cohen explained that the company took advantage of the business terms New York offered after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center, which were designed to encourage developers to build in the area. That tax break meant Africa Israel could raise capital at interest rates of only 1.75 percent a year. This is Africa Israel's first project for rent in the United States. Cohen explained that the project is designed to diversify the company's real estate portfolio beyond luxury condos. "Now we want to focus on rental apartments, so if the selling prices fall because of interest rate hikes, for instance, we can benefit from the rise in rent," Cohen said. Africa Israel estimates that the Tribeca project will be ready in the summer of 2006. Cohen added that the company had not bought the property, but had leased the land for 99 years. Africa Israel is gradually becoming a major player in Manhattan real estate."

Ad for a Bible doesn't fit,

"The nation's largest Bible publisher, rolling out its biggest marketing campaign ever to promote a new translation aimed at "spiritually intrigued 18- to 34-year-olds," has stumbled over a little rock: Rolling Stone. The magazine rejected Zondervan's Bible ad just weeks before its scheduled run date, citing an unwritten policy against accepting ads containing religious messages. Zondervan executives say the entertainment magazine was key in its $1 million campaign to reach young adults who have rarely, if ever, seen Bible ads before. Surveys show that 53% of this age group read the Bible less than once a year or never, although they are huge buyers of books on spiritual and religious themes ... More ads are booked for Web sites, including VH1 and MTV. "God" isn't mentioned in any of these, only in ads for Christian media such as Relevant, a Christian monthly magazine aimed at hip twentysomethings. But every ad carries the slogan: "Timeless truth; Today's language." And that assertion of "truth" evidently triggered the rebuff from Rolling Stone. Although Zondervan bought the space in July for a February ad, magazine executives first saw the actual copy only last week and concluded that "it doesn't quite feel right in the magazine," said Kent Brownridge, general manager of Wenner Media, parent company of Rolling Stone. "The copy is a little more than an ad for the Bible. It's a religious message that I personally don't disagree with," Brownridge said, citing "a spiritual message in the text." But, he said, "we are not in the business of publishing advertising for religious messages." He did not comment on why Rolling Stone sold ad space to Zondervan in the first place or whether any Bible ad could be acceptable. "It's hard to have a policy that covers every conceivable product," Brownridge said. Zondervan marketing vice president Doug Lockhart said offers to change the ad text were refused and Rolling Stone would not show them a written policy ruling out religious advertising. "We're really surprised and disappointed," Lockhart said. "Our mission is more people engaging the Bible more, and Rolling Stone was a perfect fit for the group we want to reach. This rejection underscores the challenge we face."

Police cited one man on a charge of misdemeanor battery. "Emotions were high, but overall, aside from verbal confrontations and one physical altercation, the event went relatively smoothly,'' said police Sgt. Joe Okies. More than 500 people, mostly Jews from throughout the Bay Area, gathered in Martin Luther King Jr. Park to hear speakers denounce terrorism ... More than 200 counter-demonstrators gathered Sunday across the street from the park for what was billed in advance as a silent vigil honoring children slain in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Most were reserved, but some 40 people, mostly men of Middle Eastern descent, yelled and exchanged taunts with pro-Israeli demonstrators across the street. "Two, four, six, eight, we are martyrs, we can't wait,'' chanted the group, most of whom wore kaffiyehs -- the cloth headdress closely associated with Palestinian militants. Some drove around the park, their faces covered, waving Palestinian flags. "We are here to make sure that these people are ashamed of themselves,'' said Essam Mahgoub, a native of Cairo, who lives in Oakland and attended with his wife and four children. "They (Israelis) stole our land, raped our women, destroyed our olive trees and destroyed our homes,'' he said."

"In a move reminiscent of the coldest days of the Cold War, reports emerged last week of Syria's intention to re-equip itself with updated Russian armament, including long-range surface-to-surface missiles capable of targeting most cities in Israel. Indeed, Syrian President Bashar Assad is reported to be on the verge of striking the largest arms deal for his country in the last 20 years. Assad, who is scheduled to visit Russia, intends to discuss the possible purchase of "Russian long-range rockets, long- and short-range anti-aircraft systems, anti-tank missiles and other weapons," according to The Middle East Newsline ... Among the weapons on Syria's wish list is the Iskander-E mobile long-range rocket, also known as the SS-26 missile, and SA-18 surface-to-air missile. The SS-26 is intended to replace the aging SCUDS and has a range of about 280 kilometers, or 174 miles. The distance between Damascus and Tel Aviv is 213 kilometers, or 132 miles. Positioned closer to the Golan Heights they could reach practically most of Israel. The Iskander-E can carry a 480-kilogram (1,058 pound) warhead. One of its great advantages is that it can easily overcome air defense systems ... [T]his could be Putin's way of getting back at the United States and the European Union for their support of Viktor Yushchenko, the pro-Western candidate in last December's Ukraine elections ... Syria, which considers itself still in a state of war with Israel, feels very vulnerable, and now all the more so since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq. Not that there was ever any love lost between the rival Baath parties in Baghdad and Damascus, but still, with the most powerful Arab army, Iraq was always willing to jump into a fight where Israel was concerned. This provided Syria somewhat of a security blanket when it came to making war with Israel. The U.S. invasion of neighboring Iraq was meant to uncover Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction and expose his supposed links to international terrorism. As both accusation turned up to be without foundation, the Syrians feel that similar excuses could as easily be used to attack them. Continuing accusations that Syria supports the anti-American insurgency in Iraq and plays host to terrorist groups in Damascus is doing nothing to alleviate Syrian fears. The dread of a U.S. military intervention might partially explain Assad's move to upgrade his military hardware. Another Syrian worry is that reinstated in the Oval Office for another four-year term President George W. Bush and the neo-conservatives are going to continue their push to "democratize" the Middle East. Much as Iran, Syria is one of the countries where the administration would like to see regime change. Such talk is keeping the Syrians edgy."

At the same time, the pressures on Annan to clean house appear to have strengthened the Jewish groups in their separate campaign for the dismissal of several senior UN aides deemed hostile to Israel. At least one, Peter Hansen, head of the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, will not be reappointed when his current term runs out at the end of February, several sources said. The fate of another aide, Lakhdar Brahimi, a special adviser known for his anti-Israel views, is less clear, as are Annan's plans for a successor to outgoing Middle East special envoy Terje Roed-Larsen. Annan has been facing calls to resign for weeks from Republican lawmakers and pundits angered over his handling of the so-called oil-for-food scandal, involving corruption in a UN program intended to channel humanitarian aid to Iraq during the 1990s. Critics also fault Annan for opposing American policy goals and for a host of management problems, some of them full-blown scandals.`No flaming red flag' A preliminary report on the oil-for-food scandal, issued last week by a special investigative panel, found evidence of mismanagement but "no flaming red flag" of top-level corruption, the panel's chairman, former Federal Reserve chief Paul Volcker, told reporters. Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman last week became the first ranking Democrat to suggest that Annan was not adequate for the job. Jewish community officials have been noticeably silent on Annan's fate, reflecting their ambivalent feelings toward the Ghanaian-born diplomat. But community officials insisted that their silence should not be taken as endorsement of his ouster. "The Jewish community has no position on oil-for-food," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, echoing the views of several officials interviewed. On the other hand, he has made some efforts to talk about anti-Semitism at the UN." He also helped set up an exhibit and a special General Assembly session, set for January 24, to commemorate the liberation of Auschwitz. At the same time, his tenure has coincided with growing Israeli isolation and rising Islamic-Western tensions. He has also angered American conservatives, including some leading supporters of Israel, for his failure to back President Bush on Iraq. Jewish groups are wary, however, of efforts to identify them with the goals of the Republican administration. Several officials were dismissive of the fact that two of Annan's most visible critics, Lieberman and Republican Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota, are both Jewish, insisting that the senators' views did not imply a "Jewish criticism" ... Rep. Tom Lantos of California reportedly discussed Hansen with Annan several weeks ago and made clear that the administration wanted him out. Sources said that European countries, while favoring him, would not block his replacement. Earlier this month, B'nai B'rith leaders wrote to Annan urging him to replace Brahimi, a former Algerian foreign minister who last year blamed Israel for troubles in Iraq, calling it "the big poison" in the Middle East. This month, he denounced international acceptance of Israel's "cynical and ridiculous viewpoint" and called for Ariel Sharon to be "condemned" for "assassinating people." Annan has repeatedly said that Brahimi's views were his own, a stance that Foxman called insufficient. However, community officials privately acknowledge that Brahimi's pivotal role in brokering stabilization efforts in Afghanistan and especially Iraq make it unlikely that Washington will support his ouster."

"School officials in Palo Alto are reconsidering their use of a popular speaker for an annual career day after he advised middle school students that they could earn a good living as strip dancers. William Fried told eighth-graders at Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School that stripping and exotic dancing could be lucrative career moves for girls, offering as much as $250,000 or more per year, depending on their bust size."It's sick, but it's true," Fried, president of Foster City's Precision Selling, a management consulting firm, told The Associated Press. "The truth of the matter is you can earn a tremendous amount of money as an exotic dancer, if that's your desire." The school has asked Fried to give his 55-minute presentation, "The Secret of a Happy Life," for the past three years. A tip sheet he distributes to students includes a list of 140 potential careers and areas of interest they can consider pursuing. Along with professions as accounting and nursing, the list offers such nontraditional suggestions as exotic dancing, stripping and acting as a spiritual medium. He counsels students to experiment with a variety of interests until they discover their "life's purpose," something they love and excel in. The presentation and handout have been praised by students, school principal Joseph Di Salvo and others said. Fried's presentation "helped me realize that my career choice should not be influenced by money," one student wrote in a thank-you letter. "It should be influenced by what we like and are good at." But on Tuesday, some students asked Fried to expand on why he included "exotic dancing" on the list. Fried spent about a minute answering questions, defining strippers and exotic dancers synonymously. He told students, "For every two inches up there, you should get another $50,000 on your salary," student Jason Garcia, 14, said. "A couple of students egged him and he took it hook, line and sinker," said Di Salvo, who also said the students took advantage of a substitute teacher overseeing the session. Di Salvo heard about the exchange when the mother of a student called him the next morning. She said she was outraged when her son announced that he was forgoing college for a career in a field he truly loves — fishing — and said she found Fried's handout even more disconcerting. Di Salvo, who has since heard from another parent, said Fried's overall presentation is a positive one. The mention of exotic dancing and Fried's off-the-cuff remarks, however, have prompted him to consider barring the speaker from next year's career day ... Pearson Education, the publishing company that owns the copyright to the single-named stars of countless reading primers, is suing a division of Time Warner for co-opting the characters in a book called "Yiddish With Dick and Jane," according to The New York Times. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, claims the book violates Pearson's copyright. The book, which has sold more than 100,000 copies since it was published in September by Little, Brown & Company, is billed as a parody. No so, the lawsuit says. "Yiddish With Dick and Jane" "is not a parody, but is an unprotected imitation," the suit alleges. Author Barbara Davilman, who co-wrote the book with Ellis Weiner, told the newspaper that she views the lawsuit as "a good old shakedown for money." The parody book takes Dick and Jane into adulthood, where they're faced with problems like adultery, ailing parents and sexual orientation. Pearson declined further comment on the lawsuit, according to the Times. Little, Brown — a part of the Time Warner Book Group — issued a statement defending its product."

PRAVDA means Truth and here it is: Prince Harry was invited to a party whose theme was Colonialists and Natives, a bit of fun, pastiche, nothing too serious. Some people turned up as natives, complete perhaps with spears, but nobody took photos of them and called them racists. Prince Harry turned up in an Afrika Korps uniform - who better to mock than the German colonials under Hitler, the greatest imperialist project in human history since perhaps Genghis Khan? If Prince Harry had arrived dressed as a Maori, nobody would have accused him of wanting to undermine the government of New Zealand. If he had gone as a British colonial explorer with a cork hat, nobody would have accused him of taking the pith. Yet the Israeli lobby was ready with an instant hail of stones, without even mentioning the humanitarian crimes committed by Tel Aviv in the last fifty years. Perhaps Prince Harry should have worn the uniform of Sharon's units in the Lebanon as they were committing their massacres of civilians. Then nobody would have said anything. To conclude, if this young man was invited to a Colonials and Natives party, what was he supposed to wear? A pink ballet dress, to be accused of being a fairy, a trans-sexual or a cross-dresser? My advice to Prince Harry: Next time, instead of apologizing, tell them where to stick it."

"If anything positive has come out of the recent uproar over Britain's Prince Harry wearing Nazi-era German insignia to a costume party, it's that there is a soverign power in England greater than that of the Royal Family. And they had better learn to pay homage to it. The general consensus is that Prince Harry, and his brother Prince William, who helped him pick out the costume, will be subjected to political re-education by leading Jewish groups complete with private tours of Auschwitz concentration camp. The training of the young princes should mirror the conditioning to which their father, Prince Charles, was subjected. The now-deceased head of Occidential Petroleum, Armand Hammer (son of Communist Party USA head Julius Hammer) was fond of recounting a story to demonstrate how well conditioned Charles was. At a dinner, Hammer says he simply reached over and began eating off of Charles' plate. When Charles protested, Hammer ignored him. After Charles ordered a new dinner plate brought, Hammer simply began eating off of the new plate. One can imagine what would have been said if young Prince Harry had worn, instead, the uniform of the Soviet NKVD: not one thing. That's because the 25-million+ Russian and Eastern European victims were politically correct victims: they were not Jews. And the architects of the horrific Gulag system that helped kill these wictims--Aaron Solts, Naftaly Frenkel, Berman, Yagoda, Rappapaport and others--were Jews. (Stalin, their master, had a long tumultuous relationship with this "master race". His wife was Jewish and his children have the "right of return" to live in the State of Israel at will.) Perhaps leaders of some of the most outspoken Jewish groups in the United Kingdom should be given private tours of the Gulag system. They can find mountains of bones--not conveniently incinerated as those claimed victims of the "holocaust"--or the bone-colored cement of the Baltic-White Sea Canal. This may help them increase their sensitivity as to the suffering of non Jews in the 20th century."

Why the Japanese Internment Still Matters,

"For years, it has been my position that the threat of radical Islam implies an imperative to focus security measures on Muslims. If searching for rapists, one looks only at the male population. Similarly, if searching for Islamists (adherents of radical Islam), one looks at the Muslim population. And so, I was encouraged by a just-released Cornell University opinion survey that finds nearly half the U.S. population agreeing with this proposition. Specifically, 44 percent of Americans believe that government authorities should direct special attention toward Muslims living in America, either by registering their whereabouts, profiling them, monitoring their mosques, or infiltrating their organizations. Also encouraging, the survey finds the more people follow TV news, the more likely they are to support these common-sense steps. Those who are best informed about current issues, in other words, are also the most sensible about adopting self-evident defensive measures. That's the good news; the bad news is the near-universal disapproval of this realism. Leftist and Islamist organizations have so successfully intimidated public opinion that polite society shies away from endorsing a focus on Muslims. In America, this intimidation results in large part from a revisionist interpretation of the evacuation, relocation, and internment of ethnic Japanese during World War II. Although more than 60 years past, these events matter yet deeply today, permitting the victimization lobby, in compensation for the supposed horrors of internment, to condemn in advance any use of ethnicity, nationality, race, or religion in formulating domestic security policy. Denying that the treatment of ethnic Japanese resulted from legitimate national security concerns, this lobby has established that it resulted solely from a combination of "wartime hysteria" and "racial prejudice." As radical groups like the American Civil Liberties Union wield this interpretation, in the words of Michelle Malkin, "like a bludgeon over the War on Terror debate," they pre-empt efforts to build an effective defense against today's Islamist enemy. Fortunately, the intrepid Ms. Malkin, a columnist and specialist on immigration issues, has re-opened the internment file. Her recently published book, bearing the provocative title In Defense of Internment: The Case for Racial Profiling in World War II and the War on Terror (Regnery), starts with the unarguable premise that in time of war, "the survival of the nation comes first." From there, she draws the corollary that "Civil liberties are not sacrosanct ... Ms. Malkin has done the singular service of breaking the academic single-note scholarship on a critical subject, cutting through a shabby, stultifying consensus to reveal how, "given what was known and not known at the time," President Roosevelt and his staff did the right thing. She correctly concludes that, especially in time of war, governments should take into account nationality, ethnicity, and religious affiliation in their homeland security policies and engage in what she calls "threat profiling." These steps may entail bothersome or offensive measures but, she argues, they are preferable to "being incinerated at your office desk by a flaming hijacked plane."

"The United States has been conducting secret reconnaissance missions inside Iran to help identify potential nuclear, chemical and missile targets, The New Yorker magazine reported Sunday. The article, by award-winning reporter Seymour Hersh, said the secret missions have been going on at least since last summer with the goal of identifying target information for three dozen or more suspected sites. Hersh quotes one government consultant with close ties to the Pentagon as saying, "The civilians in the Pentagon want to go into Iran and destroy as much of the military infrastructure as possible." One former high-level intelligence official told The New Yorker, "This is a war against terrorism, and Iraq is just one campaign. The Bush administration is looking at this as a huge war zone. Next, we're going to have the Iranian campaign." The White House said Iran is a concern and a threat that needs to be taken seriously. But it disputed the report by Hersh, who last year exposed the extent of prisoner abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq ... Bush has warned Iran in recent weeks against meddling in Iraqi elections. The former intelligence official told Hersh that an American commando task force in South Asia is working closely with a group of Pakistani scientists who had dealt with their Iranian counterparts."

Is 'Free' Speech a Product of Secular Intolerance?,

"Secularism has no sacred values other than their material interests; therefore, they are happy to lower the level of discussion using abusive language to all areas and only restrict criticisms to their defined areas of interest."
Driven by secular intolerance and xenophobia, once again Islam and Muslims are maligned in the above-mentioned article using the age-old excuse of ‘free’ speech. Across the Atlantic Ocean their American cousins are much more candid where anti-Islamic diatribe is constantly propagated and often with vulgarity. Although the holy-secular-warriors brag about their opposition to all religions but in reality they are primarily targeting Islam and Muslims. That begs the question, why, and why use vulgar anti-Islamic diatribes as opposed to debate the issues objectively. The following points will try to explicate the reasons. a). Cowardice – When the human instincts functions devoid of basic ethics the weak ones are inevitably targeted. Since the Muslim communities virtually have no voice in the corporate run mass media they are an easy target for the vultures. So, it has become fashionable to engage in Islam-bashing and the more powerful and influential communities like the Jews are carefully avoided. Just the threat of anti-Semitism leads them back to the top of the tree waiting for the next victim; the issue of ‘free’ speech is forgotten ... b). Capitulation – Only the Islamic world has not ceded to the secular fanatics and their moderate allies under the guise of reformation or modernization. Islam by default is the final challenge for the holy-secular-warriors. The Christians for example have complied with the secular definitions of what religion should be for the sake of getting accepted. One can see their desperate measures, from endorsing homosexuality, capitulating to feminism, to the selling of Christianity by exploiting the poverty of others. If the Christians are willing to tolerate the constant abuse hurled at Jesus (PBUH) why should that be a yardstick for the Muslims or anyone? c). Secular Hypocrisy – Ulterior motives results in the selective application of principles thereby exhibit hypocrisy. The US selectively invaded a weak Iraq under the pretext of a security threat but simultaneously avoided confrontation with the Nuclear North Korea. Likewise, the holy-secular-warriors are selectively attacking Islam even though their arguments could be much more applicable against other religions. For example the Talmud clearly endorses blatant RACISM as it upholds the fundamental concept of God’s chosen race. The status of the gentiles (non Jews) is like the animals literally as according to the Talmudic edict, gentiles have been created to serve the Jews, they are to be enslaved (Goyeem). Numerous other edicts from the Talmud make this very clear. Like typical hypocrites the holy-secular-warriors fear to confront the Jews and they run like cowards, barley holding up their trousers. Do we not frequently witness their hypocritical politicians getting caught with their pants down after lecturing about ‘morality’ then attempt to do a similar exit? d). The bizarre part is that the same masses who saw 'The Passion of the Christ' are into it." Every time I say stuff like this about Jews, I get hate mail. And mostly from White people, not Jews! I wonder if those same White people will be writing to the Editor of the LA Times, calling for Stein's removal because of his anti-Semitism? The LA Times. Imagine. But the PQ's education critic, Pauline Marois, says the deal is unfair. "If they respect the criteria of public schools and use the public curriculum, why don't they send their children to public schools?" she says. Marois says the province should be supporting only the public school system. When she was education minister under the PQ, she refused to boost funding to Jewish schools. Marois did agree to give more money to Greek private schools. Education Minister Pierre Reid downplays the criticism. "It is very important to understand here that not a cent is removed from the public system to go to the private schools. There is no relationship between the two projects," he says. Reid says any private school can apply for the same increased funding, if it meets the same criteria. Some other private schools say they want the same status, and the extra money, that the Jewish schools have been offered. Anthony Tsatsoulis, director-general of the Greek private Socrates schools, welcomes the news of the funding arrangement. "I think it's an excellent initiative that the minister has taken and I'm very glad they did it. The only thing is they should extend that though to include other schools like our schools," he says. With the new changes, Jewish schools will be associated with public school boards and will be allocated the same funding as public schools ... Teachers unions also are criticizing the new deal, saying it's inappropriate when Quebec's schools are underfunded. Itzler is on parole from a New Jersey prison, where he served six months of a five-year sentence for smuggling 3,869 "ecstasy" pills on a flight from Amsterdam in 2001. During the raid, cops arrested six women and a man who worked at NY Confidential on such charges as promoting prostitution, money laundering, falsifying business records and criminal possession of a controlled substance. The 79 Worth St. office was used as headquarters for the agency, sources said. Customers called to order one of nearly 100 women who signed on as contractors for the company, and paid average rates of $800 per hour to have sex with them, sources said. Higher-priced hookers could be had for up to $2,000 an hour, according to the sources. "The Walt Disney Company is a microcosm of today’s corporate America: millions paid in salary and bonus for the big boys while the company downsizes by "laying-off" staff. The remaining employees are squeezed as hard as possible. Finally, foreign workers are hired on H-1B non-immigrant visas thus shutting out qualified Americans from mid-level management positions.  For the lucky ones at Disney, January started out with a financial bang. On January 6, Disney announced that Chief Executive Michael Eisner received a $7.35 million cash bonus in 2004. With his base salary of $1 million and other compensation, Eisner's total pay package was $8.3 million. Disney President and Chief Operating Officer Robert Iger also got a healthy $6.5 million cash bonus. Added to his annual salary of $1.5 million and other payouts, Iger’s aggregate 2004 compensation was $12 million. According to the Disney compensation committee, Eisner and Iger’s bonuses were a reward for the company’s 72% earnings increase during 2004. While these sums are nothing to sneeze at, even bigger stakes are on the table this week during on going talks between Miramax co-founders Harvey and Bob Weinstein and Miramax’s parent company, Disney. Ten years ago, Disney bought Miramax from the Weinsteins for $80 million. Today, with their corporate divorce pending, Disney is prepared to buy out the Weinstein’s contract for $100 million. Also, the trial between former Disney president Michael Ovitz and Disney shareholders enters its final phase this week. Ovitz contends that his $140 million severance package, after only 15 months at Disney, is justified. In fact, Ovitz’s lawyer Larry R. Feldman contends that had Disney directors denied payment on the basis of "gross negligence" or "malfeasance", the company might have been forced to pay out additional "hundreds of millions of dollars" in damages for fraud, defamation and breach of contract. With millions either already handed out or pending for the Disney upper echelon, let’s see how far down the line that corporate largess extends. Last month the Orlando Sentinel reported in its story titled  "For Many Disney Jobs, the Future is Part Time," (by Sean Mussenden), that Walt Disney World is determined to continue expanding its part-time labor force at the expense of full-time employees. In the past decade, in what reporter Sean Mussenden calls part of a "national trend toward temporary work," the number of part-time employees at the Disney hotels and theme parks has grown ten times as fast as full-time employees. Since 1994, Disney has added 9,400 part-time employees—and increase of 140%. Full-time staff over the last decade increased by only 5,000 employees or 15%.Disney, who promised Wall Street that it would control increases in labor costs to maximize profits at its parks and resorts division, vigorously defends its switch to part-time employees. Although Disney World Senior Vice President Jerry Montgomery admits that full-time workers "cost more than part-time workers, " President Al Weis claims that the bulk of Disney’s part-time workers are students or others who do not want full-time jobs. And Weis further claims that Disney has no need to provide health insurance or other similar benefits to its part-time staff because they are either students covered by their parents’ insurance or adults covered by their spouses’ plans ... Disney, like other multinational giants, has added to its domestic middle management team through extensive use of H-1B visas. According to a database maintained by www.zazona.com, Disney and its divisions have 36 H-1B employees earning from $36,000 annually for a trade analyst to $150,000 for a Vice President of the Glendale Disney store. The average salary for the Disney H-1B employees is $85,000. Studying the Disney pattern of wages and hiring practices is sobering. But it explains how in America the rich get richer, the poor stay poor and the middle class is slowly but steadily vanishing."

"Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare by Stephen Greenblatt ... Generations of literary biographers have wanted to get through to Mr Shakespeare, or have, as Greenblatt once said, begun ‘with the desire to speak with the dead’. And there’s quite a lot of money at stake, too, in this particular piece of necrophony. Greenblatt’s biography is, as I write, ranked 271 in Amazon’s UK sales list (41 in the US), while the Arden edition of King Lear is ranked 13,791 (309,493 in the US). People are a lot more likely to buy books about Shakespeare’s life than they are to buy books by Shakespeare ... in the 1970s the greatest of all of Shakespearean biographers, Samuel Schoenbaum, produced two books which split the activity of writing lives of Shakespeare into two distinct practices. William Shakespeare: A Documentary Life (1975) recorded almost all the known documents relating to the life, and gave us one of the best examples of biography as factual record ... This new book itself seems designed to fulfil a number of market demands. The superstar critic [Greenblatt] dances out his desire for the megastar author, courting him, imagining him, loving him. Who wouldn’t buy it? Who wouldn’t long for the video? The whole concoction seems at first sparkling and stimulating, and rather sweet. It gives readable and mostly persuasive reworkings of all the familiar phases of Shakespeare’s career. But it does not take long for the suspicion to dawn that Will in the World is the literary-biographical equivalent of Coca-Cola. The sweetness gets too much after more than a couple of swigs, and after a while it starts to produce a build-up of gas which eventually squirts right up your nose ... Greenblatt needs Shakespeare to have been a Catholic to enable him to say what he wants to say about the psychogenesis of Hamlet, which is for him the absolute centre of Shakespeare’s life. And in a way this is a biography not so much of Shakespeare as of Hamlet: about three-quarters of it is spent on Shakespeare’s life up to 1600, while the later plays (including King Lear, Othello, The Tempest) are crammed into the last seventy or so pages. Hamlet, Greenblatt argues, broods on the death of Shakespeare’s son Hamnet in 1596 (‘the act of writing his own son’s name again and again may have reopened a deep wound, a wound that had never properly healed’), and anticipates the death of Shakespeare’s (Catholic) father. In the process, the play responds with regret to the Protestant denial of Purgatory, and to the passing of the formal methods of communicating with and relieving the plight of the dead which had flourished with late medieval Catholic piety."

"In response to the portrayal of Muslims on Fox's "24," the network is offering its stations two public service announcements that show Muslims in a positive light. The PSAs were produced by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, with whom Fox representatives met Wednesday. The 30- and 60-second spots showcase a diverse group of individuals, who in turn share personal descriptions and identify themselves as American Muslims ... The spots are being made available by Fox to both its owned and affiliated stations for airing throughout the broadcast day at the discretion of each station's management, said Fox spokesman Scott Grogin. Rabiah Ahmed, spokeswoman for the Washington-based CAIR, voiced hope that Fox stations would slot the PSAs adjacent to "24," now airing every Monday, to "offer competing images of American Muslims."The Fox series stars Kiefer Sutherland as a U.S. counterterrorism agent based in Los Angeles. With the beginning of the fourth season earlier this week, the story line found Sutherland battling a Muslim terror cell with members including a married couple and their teenage son. On an episode already aired, the Muslim mother poisoned her son's non-Muslim girlfriend after deeming her a threat to the cell's mission. CAIR officials requested the meeting with Fox after viewing the first four "24" episodes, which "confirmed our concerns that the story was going in a dangerous direction: casting a shadow of suspicion on ordinary American Muslims."

Was the Bush Administration Complicit in 9/11?,

"Until recently I dismissed the suggestions that the Bush administration might have been complicit in allowing 9/11 to happen as groundless "conspiracy theory." I regarded the federal investigative bureaucracies as suffering from a "lock the barn door after the horse has escaped" syndrome. American government agencies seemed to me to be full of repressive energy and exaggerated overreach after some atrocity had occurred, but remarkably incompetent when it came to preventing something in advance. There is no question that the Bush administration has profited greatly from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but I did not imagine that they could have actually known they were being planned and deliberately allowed them to happen. Thus it was with some skepticism that I agreed to read the new book written by David Ray Griffin, a process theologian from the Claremont School of Theology (Claremont, California), that argues the case for just such complicity. This book, The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11, is due for release in January, 2004. Griffin admits that he too was skeptical toward such suggestions until he began to actually read the evidence that has been accumulated by a number of researchers, both in the United States and Europe. As he became increasingly convinced that there was a case for complicity, he planned to write an article, but this quickly grew into a book. The first startling piece of evidence that Griffin puts forward is establishing the motive among leaders in the Bush administration for allowing such an attack. Already in 2000 the right-wing authors of the "Project for the New American Century: Rebuilding America's Defenses," opined that the military expansion they desired would be difficult unless a "new Pearl Harbor" occurred. They had outlined plans for a major imperial expansion of American power that included a greatly increased military budget and invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, primarily to secure oil supplies, but also to control the region generally. But they believed that the American people would not have the will for such actions without some devastating attack from outside that would galvanize them through fear and anger to support it. In short, they had already envisioned facilitating a major attack on the United States in order to gain the public support for their policy goals. Griffin then shows the considerable evidence that the Bush administration knew in advance that such an attack was being planned, despite claims by the administration that such an attack was completely unanticipated. As early as 1995 the Philippine police conveyed to the U.S. information found an Al-Queda computer that detailed "Project Bojinka" that envisioned hijacking planes and flying them into targets, such as the World Trade Center, the White House and the Pentagon. By July of 2001 the CIA and the FBI had intercepted considerable information that such an attack was planned for the Fall. Leaders of several different countries, including the Taliban in Afghanistan, as well as leaders of Russia, Britain, Jordan, Egypt and Israel, conveyed information to the United States that such an attack was being planned. It appears not only that all these warnings were disregarded, but that investigations into them were obstructed. The actual events of September 11 leave many puzzling questions. Standard procedures for intervention when a plane goes off course were not followed in the case of all four airplanes. Within ten minutes of evidence that a plane has been hijacked standard procedures call for fighter jets to intervene and demand that the plane follow it to an airport. If the plane fails to obey, it should be shot down. There was time for this to happen before the plane was over New York City in the case of the first jet and more than ample time in the case of the second. Moreover when the order was finally given to intervene, it was not to McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, seventy miles from New York City, but from Otis Air National Guard in Cape Cod. Griffin also examines unexplained issues about the other two planes. Eyewitnesses and on-site evidence suggests that a missile or guided fighter aircraft, not a large commercial plane, crashed into the Pentagon. Moreover the part of the Pentagon that was hit was not where high-ranking generals were working, but an area under repair with few military officials. Flight #93 was the only plane shot down, although only after it appeared passengers were on the verge of taking control. Griffin also examines the conduct of President Bush on that day, giving considerable evidence that he knew of the first crash immediately after it happened, but delayed his response for some half an hour, nonchalantly continuing with a photo-op with elementary school children ... Griffin concludes the book with some considerable evidence of the way the Bush Administration has obstructed any independent investigation of 9/11 since it occurred, both withholding key documents and insisting that the official investigation, when it was set up, limit itself to recommendations about how to avoid such an event in the future, and not focus on how it actually was able to happen. Griffin writes in a precise and careful fashion, avoiding inflammatory rhetoric. He argues for a high probability for the Bush administration's complicity with allowing and facilitating the attacks, based not on any one conclusive piece of evidence but on the sheer accumulation of all of the data. He concludes by calling for a genuinely independent investigative effort that would examine all this evidence. He himself plans to send the book to the Kean Commission presently charged with that task, even though he has doubts about its real independence. I personally found Griffin's book both convincing and chilling. If the complicity of the Bush Administration to which he points is true, then Americans have a far greater problem on their hands than even the more ardent anti-war critics have imagined. If the administration that would do this, what else would they do to maintain and expand their power?"

Pressure for some form of military action is also coming from interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, the report said. Hardliners in the Bush administration, according to this report, regard Syria as the "No. 1 crossing point" for guerrillas entering Iraq, and blame Damascus for an increase in attacks on US forces."

Israel already receives nearly $3 billion a year in U.S. aid. Sources described the $450 million proposal as a draft and said the cost estimates could change. According to people briefed on the proposal, U.S. funding would help cover the cost of high-tech terminals in the barrier designed to speed the inspection of Palestinian people and cargo ... The World Bank said last month that the Palestinians could expect an extra $500 million a year in vital aid if violence stopped and there was progress toward peace with Israel."

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said that the administration is opposed to weapons sales to Damascus, and that its position was well known to Moscow. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov visited Israel on Wednesday and discussed with government officials a recent crisis between Moscow and Jerusalem over reported Russian plans to sell Syria missiles capable of striking targets within Israel ... According to the report, the Iskander-E missile has a target radius capable of reaching nearly all of Israel, including the nuclear reactor site outside Dimona. Only the southern Negev and Eilat would be out of range. Israeli military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have expressed concern that the missiles would get into the hands of Hezbollah and disrupt the military balance in the Middle East ... To Kasparov, Russian President Vladimir Putin's regime is tantamount to "fascism", dismantling Russian democracy with the support of a supine West, which is interested only in stability in the East. In London for work on a new book and promotional events, the world number one said allowing Moscow to host the G8 summit in 2006 would be the equivalent of Nazi Germany being allowed to host the Olympics in 1936. "[It is vital] to make sure there is no G7 meeting in Moscow in 2006. It will be like the Berlin Olympics in 1936, it will be the equivalent of Munich 1938, integrating Putin's Russia. "The democracies are conceding to a brutal dictator. He has abolished the nature of democratic institutions. He will go further." The West must stop its overt and tacit support for Mr Putin, Kasparov said. "What is required from the West is a simple message: 'Leave us alone.' "Don't support Putin. It is not about giving support to us, but Putin's main support comes from Western leaders. President Bush is not shy about calling this KGB colonel his friend." Kasparov was born in the Azerbaijan capital Baku in 1963 to a Jewish father and an Armenian mother. Ever since his victory over Anatoly Karpov in 1985 to become world champion Kasparov has been portrayed as an outsider who took on the Soviet establishment. Kasparov helped set up Committee 2008, a group dedicated to bringing down Mr Putin and stopping the constitution being changed so that he can run for a third term, in January last year. He takes heart from what has happened in Ukraine, and believes Mr Putin will have to leave office, perhaps even before his second term comes to an end in 2008. "There could be popular unrest. The stability [of Russia] exists only in the mind of Bush and Blair. "It lives through high oil prices and censorship." Liberal opponents in Russia say Mr Putin's control of the media and incidents like the recent forced sale of oil firm Yukos' assets make democracy impossible. Putin popularity Kasparov said the Yukos sale was "the greatest robbery of the 21st Century". But supporters of Mr Putin point to the 71% share of the vote he took in last year's presidential election, and his high approval ratings. The president himself has said he is upholding democracy and fighting corruption, and that Russia has standards that compare with anywhere in the West."

"The Texas attorney general filed a consumer-fraud lawsuit Monday against Friedman's Inc., the nation's third-largest jewelry chain, which is already under federal investigation for its accounting practices. Attorney General Greg Abbott said the company misled customers about the level of "required" insurance coverage when applying for installment credit on purchases. Abbott said Friedman's pressured low-income customers to sign up for loan-protection insurance without being clear that the coverage was optional. Company employees failed to disclose the cost of the coverage, he said. The attorney general is seeking civil penalties of up to $20,000 per violation of state laws against deceptive trade practices, plus legal fees and restitution for customers. An attorney for the Savannah, Ga.-based company didn't immediately return a call for comment. Friedman's has more than 600 stores in about 20 states, including 65 in Texas. Friedman's has been named in class-action lawsuits and placed under federal investigation since it announced in late 2003 that it would restate financial results from 2000 through 2003 because of concern about how it accounted for bad debt and losses. The company disclosed in October that the Securities and Exchange Commission may recommend revoking or suspending its shares, which were delisted by the New York Stock Exchange."

Interview with an expert: Shari Graydon on the sexing up of pre-teens,

"Shari Graydon is a media expert, author and former president of Media Watch. Her latest book, In Your Face: The Culture of Beauty and You, is published by Annick Press. The following is an edited excerpt from her interview with Marketplace's Wendy Mesley.
Wendy Mesley: Why are [retailers] selling bras for little girls?
Shari Graydon: Well, I suspect that the advertisers would tell you ‘we’re doing this because there’s a demand for it.’ And they sort of escape --or avoid-- acknowledging that they have created the demand... But you know, just because kids want to smoke cigarettes, it doesn’t mean that we market cigarettes to them… We do in fact market cigarettes to kids, but it’s against the law. And you know, you could argue that this should be against the law too.
Mesley: Why?
Graydon: What we’re doing is we’re encouraging kids to think of themselves as, and dress in a way that is sexually provocative... And it doesn’t make sense that parents would buy this stuff for their kids … This kind of stuff normalizes the sexualization of children and allows people who are already disturbed and inclined to view kids as sexual playthings and sexual objects – this kind of stuff reinforces their rationalization that it’s okay, that it’s normal.
Mesley: But beyond pedophiles – I guess this would probably create a reaction among teenage boys too.
Graydon: Yes, it would… What it does is, is it says the juxtaposition of this kind of clothing and children who are demonstrably not of an age where they are capable of managing sexual attention, it puts the two together in a way that makes the kids vulnerable to attention that’s not appropriate.
Mesley: Does that upset you?
Graydon: Yeah, it does. It really disturbs me. And I don’t understand why companies, the executives of whom have children, produce the stuff and why parents don’t appreciate that this is clearly not in the best interests of their children ... I think it is really difficult to be a parent today. I think it’s way more difficult to withstand the onslaught of the culture around us than it was a generation or two ago. There’s a much greater volume of messages being targeted. Ten or 15 years ago, there were Levi stores. There were stores like the Gap that were targeting kids, but they weren’t stores that were featuring these kind of very sexualized clothing. So that’s been a sea change over the last five years. I would say there’s been a big shift and focus on the sexualization of clothes and makeup for children ...
Mesley: Which came first: kids growing up faster or images that made them grow up faster?
Graydon: I would fault the media and I would say that popular culture and the images that are so prevalent are responsible. You could point to Madonna as being the sort of leading edge envelope pusher 15 years ago, when she first did her video, "Like a Virgin," and where she used to wear corsets or bra tops as exterior clothing, as opposed to underneath things ...
Mesley: Are you familiar with the Bratz? [Mesley shows her a Bratz doll] This is for a six year old… What do you think of that?
Graydon: Well, you know, I played with Barbies and I used to have Ken and Barbie get together. But it was very domestic, I have to say. And I think at the age of six, developmentally you don’t have the capacity to really comprehend the nuances of flirtation and sexual interaction in the way that a teenager or an adult would. So the emphasis and focus of these toys does seem much more adult than is age appropriate.
Mesley: The makers of these dolls say that they’re the anti-Barbie because they’re cool and they’re fashionable and they’re not an airline stewardess – they’re cool.
Graydon: I’m sure that’s true. What they’re essentially doing is taking their cues from music videos and pop culture, which is obviously very engaging to kids. Six year olds tend to aspire to be doing what 12 and 14 year olds are doing. So it’s not surprising that it would be popular ... What I find so depressing about this is that adult women are concerned and preoccupied enough with the pressure to live up to unattainable physical ideals. And to think that we’re now encouraging kids this young to be that self-conscious about appearance issues is really devastating… What it does is take away emphasis that would otherwise be on learning, curiosity, mastering a sport, playing an instrument, defining yourself in term of the friends that you make and the things that you do and the things that you think – as opposed to how you appear to other people.
Mesley: The maker of Bratz, when I raised some of these issues with him, he said ‘it’s just a toy.’
Graydon: Toys are significant items in kids’ lives. The relationship that a child establishes with a toy is something where they endow the toy with dreams and hopes and aspirations. They interact with the toy. Girls in particular, we know do a lot of role-playing with dolls.
So encouraging them to be role-playing around adult preoccupations, sex, relationships, is really encouraging them not to be a child anymore, is robbing them in a sense of their opportunity to simply explore and engage in a child’s world. It wasn't the tombstones he remembers, but the people walking around them on what was left of the legs they lost to the diseases and infections rampant in the ghetto where Nazis had forced his family and about 300,000 other Jews to live. Fast forward a year or two, and he's a six-year-old prisoner in a concentration camp making new memories. "I remember seeing the bodies of women piled up on what looked like wheelbarrows," Torrey, now 66, says. "To me, that was normal. Seeing those dead bodies didn't make much of a bad impression on me at the time. It's just the way it was." Torrey's story of surviving the Holocaust is one of 29 that are being told at the Hatikvah Holocaust Education Center in Springfield ... "'"First there was Herod, who ordered the children of Bethlehem to be killed, then there was Hitler and Stalin among others, and today unborn children are being killed in their millions." So spoke the German Cardinal Joachim Meisner in a recent homily that created a firestorm of protest in Germany. The president of the Central Council for Jews in Germany, Paul Spiegel, said the cardinal had insulted the millions of victims of the Holocaust and that he was considering taking the matter to court, which just goes to show how anti-Semitic most modern Jews have become. There are many myths surrounding the Holocaust. Sadly, the children of the Jewish survivors have not bothered to learn the history their ancestors lived. Instead, these children project their own incoherent political views back on their parents’ and grandparents’ catastrophic experience. As a result, we encounter absurdities such as the one stirred up in Germany. In order to see why this episode is the height of historical irony, let us examine a few of the modern myths and compare them to the realities.
Myth #1: The Holocaust was an attack on religion. Fact: Eberhard Jackel’s standard biography of Hitler, Hitler’s World View, states "All Hitler had to say was that Jewry was 'definitely a race and not a religious community.' " (p. 49). Hitler saw everything in terms of race, not religion. ... A German Jew who had been sterilized was free to practice his faith. Nazis were only concerned with Jewish reproduction, not with Jewish religion. That is, the Nazis held a view of Judaism extremely similar to that of most modern rabbis: Judaism is passed on through the genes. The only difference is this: modern Judaism insists you are born a Jew only if you have a Jewish mother. The Nazis held that either parent was sufficient to make you a Jew. But, ironically, both the Nazis and today's rabbis insist an atheist can be a Jew, thus cementing the attitudes of neo-Nazi skinheads throughout the world.
Myth #2: The slaughter of Jewish children was opposed by all Jews. Fact: In December, 1938, David Ben-Gurion, one of the founders of the state of Israel, specifically said, "if I knew it was possible to save all children of Germany by their transfer to England and only half of them by transferring them to the Land of Israel, I would choose the latter, because we are faced not only with the accounting of these children but also with the historical accounting of the Jewish people." This was not just rhetoric. In 1945, Ben-Gurion and other Zionist leaders vetoed the immigration of 1,000 orphans from Germany to England, even though the necessary permits had been secured and these children were in grave danger of death due to the harsh winter. Zionists also managed to stop another group of roughly 500 children from reaching France, where rabbinical institutions had offered them safe haven.
Myth #3: All European Jews were opposed to National Socialism (Nazism).
Fact: While the vast majority of European Jews (approaching ninety-five percent) were opposed to both the Nazis and the Zionists, it is generally not realized that the Zionists were themselves national socialists. The prime difference between them lay only in this: the nation the socialist Zionists supported was the state of Israel. Even this, however, was not an impediment, as both the Nazis and the Jews agreed that all German Jews should be moved to Israel, whether they wanted to or not. Thus, the Zionist flag was the only flag other than the swastika that was permitted to fly in Nazi Germany. In 1937, Ben-Gurion stated his coldly calculated politics, "Jewish suffering is also a political factor, and whoever says that Hitler diminished our strength, is not telling the truth." Hannah Arendt in Eichmann in Jerusalem noted that the Zionists and the Nazis often worked together because the Nazis recognized in the Zionists a group with common interests. For their part, the Zionists felt the Nazis were a force that would prevent German Jews from being assimilated into the European population and thereby disappearing entirely as a people. They were right to be concerned about this: natural assimilation was already far advanced when Hitler took power ...
Myth #4: The Holocaust exclusively targeted Jews
Fact: Roughly twelve million people died in the Holocaust. Six million of those were Jews. The other six million were Gentiles. The next largest contingent to die in the camps, in terms of pure body count, were Catholics. Indeed, in its first twenty-five consecutive months of operation, Auschwitz killed exactly one Jew. All the rest of the murdered were Catholics. In terms of per capita deaths, the Gypsies were certainly killed at a higher rate than any other group, with the only possible exception being the per capita death rate of Catholic priests and religious. Quite frankly, anyone who says only Jews have a right to speak of the Holocaust or make Holocaust comparisons is a bigot and a Holocaust denier.
Myth #5: Abortion has nothing to do with the Holocaust
Fact: Germany outlawed abortion in the 1871 constitution that formed the modern German state; the constitution provided jail terms and financial penalties for both the doctor and the woman who contracted for the abortion. However, just as American activist courts repealed state laws, so Hitler’s eugenics courts repealed the relevant portions of the German constitution in 1934. The first legal abortions in Germany took place under Hitler and Hitler both legalized and encouraged abortion and contraception for non-Aryans in every state he conquered. The saline abortion method was developed in the death camps through experiments conducted on pregnant Jews and Slavs. That Nazi method for abortion was used throughout the United States from World War II through the early 1980s.
Conclusion: The legal methods that allow the killing of unborn children, and Jews, Gypsies or Catholics living in German-occupied territory were identical. In both cases, the persons in question were first stripped of all legal rights and declared non-persons by the state ... Today, the nation of Israel is slowly disappearing due to the high contraception and abortion rates among Jewish citizens. The same thing is true of Jewish populations throughout the world: none have the necessary 2.1 replacement fertility rate. What Hitler could not finish, the Zionists seem intent on completing. Thus, it is the height of irony that a Jewish organization would object to comparisons between the German Holocaust, which wiped out six million Jews, and the abortion holocaust. "In the wake of the spectacular collapse of Bush’s nomination of Bernard Kerik as the new head of the Department of Homeland Security, the administration has selected a replacement: Michael Chertoff. Like Kerik, Chertoff is an appropriate choice for an agency dedicated to deepening the attacks on the democratic rights of the American people. Chertoff’s main qualification for the job is his record as assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department’s criminal department from 2001 to 2003. In that position, he helped push through many of the administration’s attacks on democratic rights, including the Patriot Act. In late 2001, he played a crucial role in organizing the mass roundup of Arabs in the United States, their detention and deportation ... It is an indication of the decayed state of American democracy that such an individual as Chertoff is expected to breeze through the confirmation process in the Senate ... What is included in Chertoff’s resume? He played a key role in formulating and defending the idea that people could be rounded up and held as “material witnesses” following the attacks of September 11. In October 2001, the government carried out a dragnet, detaining hundreds of mainly Middle Eastern and South Asian immigrants on minor immigration violations. Many were deported from the United States, despite the fact they had nothing to do with terrorism or the September 11 attacks. The concept of “material witness” was important, because it provided the government with a pretext for holding those detained indefinitely without filing charges. The category had been employed in the past to hold suspected members of organized crime, but had never been used on a mass scale. In an article published on January 12, the New York Times quotes a former Justice Department official as saying that Chertoff “was the one pushing to say, ‘Hey, we ought to look at using this [material witness category] more aggressively against terrorists.’ ... According to [Steven] Brill, Chertoff argued that even if those who were detained were given hearings, “the hearings could not only be done in secret, but also could be delayed, and that even after the hearings were held and they were ordered deported, there was nothing in the law that said they absolutely had to be deported immediately. They could be held still longer.” ... In his position in the Justice Department, Chertoff also played a critical role in the witch-hunt of John Walker Lindh, the American youth who was captured by US forces in Afghanistan in November 2001. Lindh eventually entered a pre-trial guilty plea on charges of aiding the Taliban and is serving a sentence of 20 years. The conviction of Lindh was a travesty of democratic rights. The main evidence used against him was obtained by the FBI through coercion and torture. Before his interrogation, Lindh was stripped naked, bound to a table with duct tape and kept in a cold environment for two days. He was denied treatment for his wounds, and during interrogation he was denied access to a lawyer whom his family had hired. The extraordinary breach of democratic processes represented by the Lindh interrogation provoked concern within the FBI itself. Citing previously undisclosed Justice Department documents, the New York Times reported January 13 that Chertoff helped squash these concerns. The article states that a lawyer in the department, John Du Pue, warned in one email that Lindh’s interrogation might be perceived as “an ethical violation.” ... Chertoff also played a leading role in the government’s prosecution of Zacarias Moussaoui. Chertoff represented the government before the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in June 2003, seeking to prevent Moussaoui and his lawyers access to the prosecution’s main witness. Moussaoui is the only person who has been charged in connection with the attacks of September 11. His case has been on hold for two years. As a leading figure in the Justice Department, Chertoff supported and helped draft the Patriot Act. He has defended many of the provisions contained in that piece of legislation, and in particular has defended the right of the government to gather vast amounts of information on the American population. Chertoff is one of the many lawyers in the Bush administration who are members of the Federalist Society, a right-wing legal association that has been involved in every manner of attacks on constitutional rights ... Chertoff is not a man of the Christian right. He is pro-choice, and on one occasion raised mild questions about some aspects of the administration’s policy on indefinitely detaining “enemy combatants.” For these reasons he is being hailed as a moderate by the Democratic Party, which agrees on all essential issues with the Bush administration’s attacks on democratic rights."

"Abraham Foxman is calling for a revolution in the relationship between Israel and the Diaspora. Instead of Israel continuing to absorb the money donated by Diaspora Jewry every year, the national director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) recommends changing the direction of the flow. In the opinion of Foxman - one of the most prominent and powerful personalities in American Jewry - it is to Israel's advantage that it invest in the future generation of Diaspora Jewry. Otherwise, he warns, there will be no future generation of Jews in the Diaspora who will have a sense of commitment to Israel ... The man who is considered in the United States to be a foremost leader in the struggle against anti-Semitism barely mentions anti-Semitism this time. It's not because the problem has disappeared - Foxman is always ready with statistics that indicate the opposite - but because other problems disturb him more than another Mel Gibson film, or the findings of the latest survey about the percentage of Americans who suspect the Jews of dual loyalty. The Haaretz interview with Foxman took place about two and a half weeks ago in Jerusalem. A short time earlier he had met with President Moshe Katsav, who tried to convince Foxman to support his idea of a "second house," a new initiative by the president to establish a worldwide Jewish assembly that would operate alongside the Knesset and serve as a forum for consultations between Israel and Diaspora Jewry. Foxman emerged from the meeting very excited. He didn't buy the idea of the second house, but he agreed wholeheartedly with the urgent need for a drastic step in an attempt to save the future generation of U.S. and Diaspora Jews. It's true that the Jewish community in the United States has never been wealthier, more influential and more self-confident ... In spite of his pessimism, Foxman believes that we can "stop our bleeding for now," as he puts it, with the help of leadership and monetary investments, not by establishing more councils. In his opinion, 30 percent of the money should be invested in programs to bring young Jews to Israel, initiatives such as birthright or Masa, the new program initiated by the Jewish Agency. "We have developed the most exciting audio-visual Jewish identity program that anybody could dream of, and it is called Israel," Foxman says. "We know it works. This is the tourniquet, this will stop our bleeding for now. If you send 100 kids here, one third will be Zionists forever, for one third it won't matter, and one third will be `different.' That's a pretty good investment for $5,000." Foxman says that the remaining $70 million should be invested in Jewish education in the United States, in expanding the infrastructure and in substantial tuition subsidies. According to the study, in 2000-2001, 79 percent of Jewish children in the United Stated received "some kind" of Jewish education, but only 29 percent attended private Jewish schools and yeshivas. The main reason for that is the cost: One year of schooling in a Jewish school in New York cost the parents up to $20,000 per child. "A good salary for people who don't work in Wall Street is $100,000, $120,000, and if they have three kids and they don't qualify for scholarship, they can't afford to send their kids to a Jewish day school," says Foxman. Foxman is not the first to call for investment in Jewish education. Millionaire Michael Steinhardt, one of the founders of birthright, announced in 2003 that he would contribute $10 million to a special education fund, if other donors would pledge to contribute an additional $90 million. But to date, no one has taken up Steinhardt's challenge - American Jews are simply not interested in contributing their money to Jewish education. Foxman understands that well. "It's easier to raise money in the United States for Israel than for Jewish education," he says. That is why Foxman proposes that Israel invest in Jewish education with the money it receives from American Jews. He says that Israel has to be a partner - and it isn't. He is familiar with all the arguments, he knows that $10 million is very important for the disabled, for single mothers. But he says that this $10 million, if invested in a program like birthright, will be much more important to Israel in another 20 years. Israeli politicians, such as Yossi Beilin, have previously said that money collected from Jewish donations not be transferred to Israel. They claimed that Israel is sufficiently independent and mature to give up the support of Diaspora Jews, and that only in this way will it be possible to begin an egalitarian and mature relationship between Israel and the Diaspora. Foxman uses this argument and goes one step further. "I would suggest that Israel say to Diaspora Jewry: `Thank you. We want to reinvest your money to secure your future and our relationship, and for the next five years, the money that you raise for us we will reinvest in kids coming to Israel, building schools, infrastructure, scholarships."

"NBC News broadcast on December 22nd a report on the exodus of Christians from the Holy Land. More than half the Christian population or 60,000 have left Israel in the past 50 years. Bethlehem has the largest Christian population --around 27,000. Surrounded by physical barriers, including concrete roadblocks, Israeli military checkpoints, dirt mounds and a soon to be completed security wall, the ‘little town of Bethlehem’ of Christmas songs is "an isolated, stagnant and depressing place," NBC reported. "Israeli soldiers on foot patrol, in jeeps and in watchtowers monitor and restrict almost all pedestrian and vehicle traffic in and out of town." Bethlehem’s Christian Mayor, Hannah Nasser, is so dejected with all the restrictions placed on his town that he told NBC: "If Joseph and Mary tried to come today, Israeli soldiers would check their papers, rummage through their baggage and rudely turn them away." NBC cited the predicament of Karnig Balekdjian as an example of the discriminatory treatment of Christians by Israeli officials. Balekdjian, a 30-year-old native of Jerusalem who worked at the Armenian Patriarchate, could not celebrate Christmas this year with his family. He was forced to leave Israel because government officials would not allow his 26-year-old bride, Yvette Iskandarian, to come to Jerusalem to be with her husband. NBC reported that Yvette couldn’t even visit Karnig let alone live with him, because she is from Iran. Israel bars individuals born in "hostile countries," but Jews from these same countries can freely visit Israel and immigrate without any problem, according to NBC. Balekdjian had applied to the Israeli Interior Ministry, but to no avail. "I went to the Interior Ministry twice a week for a year, most times I couldn’t even get through the door," he told NBC News. "My wife is not a Muslim, not a terrorist, not a threat to Israel. Yet as Christians we’re not allowed to live here." The Armenian Patriarchate was even willing to sponsor his wife with a job offer, but Israeli officials said no. The most distressing part of this story is that there is no Armenian agency anywhere in the world that an Armenian with a grievance can turn to. Here is a young man whose most basic rights were violated, and yet no one is interested in defending him. Armenian officials and organizations, by showing no interest in the plight of fellow Armenians, are clearly indicating to all foreign authorities that they can do as they please with their Armenian subjects: there would be no complaints and no repercussions. Everyone else may be enjoying Christmas and the New Year holidays, but Karnig Balekdjian is in no mood to celebrate!"

"Edward Fagan, the first lawyer to sue Swiss banks for hoarding the money of Holocaust victims and who championed survivors’ rights in insurance and art cases, has been charged by the New Jersey Office of Attorney Ethics with looting more than $400,000 from the trust accounts of two survivors he represented. Disciplinary action ranges from an admonition to disbarment.
“The knowing misappropriation [of funds] is a disbarable offense,” said John McGill III, the deputy ethics counsel who is overseeing the case."

Kazakhstan accuses Ali G over 'anti-semitic slurs',

"Ali G star Sacha Baron Cohen has found himself in hot water with Kazakhstan for suggesting that the nation is anti-Semitic. Cohen, who has become a cult celebrity in the US with Da Ali G Show, was condemned for calling the central Asian country “a wild den of misogynistic dog-shooting Gypsy and Jew-haters". Kazakhstan embassy spokesman Roman Vassilenko, in the US, said: “I do have a sense of humour. But it’s not quite helpful and perhaps harmful to portray a country where ’Throw the Jew down the well’ is a famous folk song’.”
He was referring to an incident on Da Ali G Show recently when Cohen, posing as a Kazakhstani journalist named Borat, led people in an Arizona bar in song. The tune, called In My Country There Is Problem, contained the line: “Throw the Jew down the well so my country can be free.” The criticism of Cohen, 33 himself a Jew, comes a day after news emerged that he was nearly lynched at a rodeo for saying President George Bush drank the blood of dead Iraqis. Cambridge-graduate Cohen convinced organisers of the rodeo that he was filming a documentary about America. He told them he supported the war on terrorism and said: “I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards. “And may George W Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq.” “If he had been out there a minute longer, I think someone would have shot him,” commented local Robynn Jaymes."
