Increasingly, the Jewish state of Israel is fast becoming itself a giant moral brothal, corrupt in almost every imaginable way. Is this the country Americans would choose to support, if provided honest information about it? If the U.S. government so desperately wants "democracy" in the Middle East, how about a surprise invasion of Tel Aviv, going house to house to free the thousands of non-Jewish sex slaves from their expressly Jewish chains?]
The right to a call girl,

"A young man of 19, Y., was injured in a car accident and filed a claim with his insurance company. Thousands of these sorts of claims are submitted each year and receive no publicity. However, Y.'s affair received wide publicity and struck a chord in the media in particular, and Israeli society in general. The special interest had to do with one of the sections of the subsequent court verdict: Aside from various types of monetary compensation, the court also ruled in favor of human compensation for Y. The Tel Aviv District Court ruled that the claimant would be entitled to receive medication against impotence once a week, and that "in addition, he will be entitled to visit a brothel once a week." Prior to stating the sum to be allocated to this compensation category, the verdict offers a few relevant details: the fact that the plaintiff's girlfriend left him after a lengthy relationship and that he was hospitalized in a psychiatric ward due the development of a psychotic condition that he claimed was brought on by the split; in the post-accident period he had a few partners, but was able to have sex during this period "only with call girls." As such, the court essentially puts its stamp of approval on the plaintiff's contention that he has only one recourse - to pay for sex services. This assertion leaves certain things concealed from the eyes of the court. One, that women are not a form of "compensation" that may be handed down in a verdict to a person, no matter what his condition; two, that brothels have been prohibited by the lawmaker, and only the blatant incompetence of law enforcement authorities caused this section to become a dead letter; and three, that according to police testimony presented December 22 to a session of a parliamentary committee of investigation chaired by MK Zahava Gal-On, 99 percent of all the women engaged in prostitution in Israel are victims of trafficking. In other words, there is a 99 percent chance that in the weekly visit to a house of prostitution granted to him by the court, Y. will be having sexual relations with a victim of human trafficking and contributing the insurance company's money directly to organized crime, all with the blessing and assent of the district court. Israeli society, which has clear patriarchal characteristics, had over the years provided men nearly unlimited access to women: rape victims were raped a second time by the enforcement authorities; women who experienced sexual harassment and complained were systematically persecuted by colleagues and superiors; rape of women by their husbands was not considered a crime until the late 1970s; and victims of trafficking were defined here as prostitutes who came to Israel of their own volition, and not as women whose human rights were violated in every possible way. Now the court comes and takes it a step further - a more extreme step - by legitimizing this access. Prostitution services are only one section of the court verdict, along with future loss of livelihood, medications, sports activity required by the plaintiff, telephone and housing expenses, etc. One section of the verdict debates the plaintiff's claim that as a result of the accident he has begun to "smoke like a chimney" and is seeking the insurance company's funding for his increased smoking expenses. The court states that smoking is harmful to health, and that as part of the psychiatric treatment to be given him, "it would be appropriate for an effort to be made to cure the plaintiff of this habit." From this passage we learn that the court is concerned with the plaintiff's health and feels that smoking is unhealthful, but prostitution is healthful. Nevertheless, the verdict devotes not one word to the health, dignity or freedom of the victim of trafficking that will be compelled to serve as a "consolation prize" for Y.'s condition of impotence. The court awarded Y. a sum of NIS 150,000 for the "impotence treatment" section of the claim. The victim of trafficking, purchased by a dealer in Israel's meat market, is bought for between $4,000 and $6,000. A quick calculation demonstrates that through the amount that Y. will be funneling to organized crime, its minions will be able to buy between five and eight additional women. One wonders about the court's moral authority to hear indictments filed against traffickers in women at a time that deplorable court verdicts like this essentially promote trafficking and ensure its prosperity. Cavaliers done deal: Businessman buys Cleveland team for $375M,

"At 5-foot-6, Dan Gilbert never had a realistic chance of playing in the NBA. So he discovered another way into the league: owning the Cleveland Cavaliers. Gilbert, founder of the nation’s largest online mortgage company, bought the Cavaliers for $375 million on Monday from owner Gordon Gund, inheriting a team that is soaring to new heights with LeBron James. ‘It’s been a long, long dream,’’ said Gilbert, founder of Quicken Loans. ‘‘I’m definitely pinching myself. This is something I’ve talked about since I was a kid 30 years ago.’’ The Detroit businessman heads a group of investors that will assume ownership of the Cavaliers and operational control of the 20,000-seat Gund Arena once the league’s Board of Governors approves the deal ... In buying the Cavaliers, the 42-year-old Gilbert has satisfied a sports craving that dates to a childhood spent rooting for the Detroit Lions, who have endured years of frustration — just like the Cavaliers. Gilbert failed in an attempt to buy the Milwaukee Brewers last year. Primarily because of James, the league’s reigning Rookie of the Year, the Cavaliers, who won just 17 games two years ago, have never been more visible or valuable since joining the league in 1970 ... Gilbert said he has no plans to relocate the Cavaliers, a possibility that had made Cleveland residents, some of whom are still bitter about Art Modell moving the Browns to Baltimore in 1995, nervous when they heard Gund was selling ... A communications major at Michigan State, Gilbert began building his business in his first year of law school when he invested $5,000 — his life savings — to launch the online mortgage business Rock Financial. In 1998, he sold the company for $370 million only to buy it back four years later. According to Forbes, Rock Financial closed mortgages totaling more than $12 billion last year. "[Dan] Gilbert, 41, of Franklin, is now chairman of Quicken Loans, Inc., the nation’s largest online mortgage lender and the country’s 23rd largest, out of 35,000, retail mortgage firm. The Quicken Loans organization consists of more than 1,500 employees at Quicken Loans, Inc., Rock Financial and Title Source, a title and settlement services company, operated by Jeff Eisenshtadt of Bloomfield Township. Quicken expects to close about $15 billion in mortgage loans this year — at a rate of one deal every minute and 15 seconds somewhere in the U.S. But Gilbert also wants to be a banker. Rock Holdings, Inc., parent company of Quicken Loans and Rock Financial, has asked federal regulators to approve its formation of a new bank, with five branches to open in southeastern Michigan some time next year. Rock also signed a deal recently to be the exclusive mortgage provider for Biltmore Properties Corp., Troy, which builds residences in Auburn Hills, Canton Township, Novi and Ann Arbor. Rock personnel will staff Biltmore’s model homes to help streamline mortgage approval ... Gilbert made his first venture into Indianapolis 500 car racing this year, linking with Penske Racing, Inc. Gilbert recently caused a stir on Wall Street and at the offices of the venerable Rawlings Sporting Goods Co. of St. Louis by becoming the largest shareholder at the maker of major league baseball mitts, bats and balls, then trying, unsuccessfully, to take over the firm. He later was instrumental in the company’s sale to the K2 Co. "The man buying the Cleveland Cavaliers said Tuesday he doesn't think a gambling-related arrest when he was in college will affect the deal. Dan Gilbert was arrested in 1981 while a student at Michigan State. He was fined, given probation and ordered to do 100 hours of community service – but he has no permanent criminal record since the charges were dismissed. He qualified for a program that allows certain youthful offenders to have their records cleared. Gilbert said the gambling involved a weekly football pool that he likened to a weekly poker game. He said that several students were involved and that he was one of the few arrested. According to a story in the Lansing State Journal, Gilbert was arrested with three other students in 1981 on charges of operating a bookmaking ring at Michigan State that handled $114,000 in bets on football and basketball games. Gilbert said Tuesday the pool was only related to football and that dollar amounts listed in media reports have been exaggerated. "If this is relevant to the purchase of an NBA basketball team, maybe you guys can answer that," Gilbert said. "If I was concerned, I wouldn't have gone through this process. No, I am not concerned." Gilbert, founder of the nation's largest online mortgage company, agreed to buy the Cavaliers for $375 million from Gordon Gund. The deal is pending approval from the NBA. Gilbert said he told the league about his arrest. He also said he has been personally investigated by nearly all 50 states as an officer of a mortgage lending institution. He is chairman of Quicken Loans Inc., a $12 billion Web-based mortgage lender based near Detroit. The NBA said Monday it was just beginning to review Gilbert's application. Gilbert said he was disappointed so much attention has been focused on the gambling incident that occurred when he was a 19-year-old at Michigan State. According to a Jan. 6, 1982, story in The State News, Michigan State's student newspaper, police said the ring began as a social event among eight to 12 friends, but quickly grew. The State News reported at the time that bets typically ranged from $20-$50, some wagers were as much as $200, and one customer was more than $1,000 in debt. Police said that's what brought the ring down. A frightened student went to police, who set up an undercover officer to pose as the student's father and arrange a meeting to pay the debt. The officer was shown the operation's books, and arrests followed soon afterward, catching the college students by surprise."

'Spam King' to Stop Invading Computers,

"Under an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission, a man known as the "Spam King" will stop infecting computers with advertising programs until a federal lawsuit against him is resolved. Stanford Wallace and his companies, SmartBot.net Inc. of Richboro, Pa., and Seismic Entertainment Productions Inc. of Rochester, are required by the agreement to send online ads only to people who visit their Web sites. The government says Wallace used spyware to infiltrate computers, overwhelming them with ads and other programs. Then, he tried to sell programs he claimed would fix the problems. The government said the remedies do not work. "The commission does believe this is great relief for consumers until the matter is ultimately resolved in the courts," said Laura Sullivan, a lawyer for the FTC. "This provides wonderful protection for consumers in the interim." No trial date has been set. Spyware programs monitor which Web sites a consumer visits and some redirect users to different sites. This can make computers extremely sluggish and often causes them to crash. U.S. District Judge Joseph DiClerico issued a temporary restraining order against Wallace in October to prevent him from sending ads. Hearings on that order planned for this week were canceled because the agreement made them unnecessary. Wallace has said he is being persecuted because of his past involvement in junk Internet mailings. He headed a company called Cyber Promotions in the 1990s that sent as many as 30 million junk e-mails daily to consumers, earning him the nicknames "Spam King" and "Spamford." He left the company after lawsuits from America Online and CompuServe. Wallace moved to Las Vegas last summer. He recently shut down a nightclub he ran in Rochester and placed Seismic Entertainment, the company that ran it, in bankruptcy."

"Federal authorities Tuesday used the Patriot Act to charge a man with pointing a laser beam at an airplane overhead and temporarily blinding the pilot and co-pilot. The FBI acknowledged the incident had no connection to terrorism but called David Banach's actions "foolhardy and negligent." Banach, 38, admitted to federal agents that he pointed the light beam at a jet and a helicopter over his home near Teterboro Airport last week, authorities said. Initially, he claimed his daughter aimed the device at the helicopter, they said. He is the first person arrested after a recent rash of reports around the nation of laser beams hitting airplanes. Banach was charged only in connection with the jet. He was accused of interfering with the operator of a mass transportation vehicle and making false statements to the FBI, and was released on $100,000 (euro74,822) bail. He could get up to 25 years in prison and fines of up to $500,000 (euro374,112). Banach's lawyer, Gina Mendola-Longarzo, said her client was simply using the hand-held device to look at stars with his daughter on the family's deck. She said Banach bought the device on the Internet for $100 (euro75) for his job testing fiber-optic cable. "He wasn't trying to harm any person, any aircraft or anything like that," she said. The jet, a chartered Cessna Citation, was coming in for a landing last Wednesday with six people aboard when a green light beam struck the windshield three times at about 3,000 feet, according to court documents. The flash temporarily blinded both the pilot and co-pilot, but they were later able to land the plane safely, authorities said. "Not only was the safety of the pilot and passengers placed in jeopardy by Banach's actions, so were countless innocent civilians on the ground in this densely populated area," said Joseph Billy, agent in charge of the FBI's Newark bureau. Then, on Friday, a helicopter carrying Port Authority detectives was hit by a laser beam as its crew surveyed the area to try to pinpoint the origin of the original beam. According to the FBI, the Patriot Act does not describe helicopters as "mass transportation vehicles." As for why Banach was not charged with some other offense over the helicopter incident, Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office, did not immediately return calls for comment."

"Israeli, Turkish and US warships and aircraft are set to hold joint rescue maneuvers next week. he three-day maneuvers will begin on January 11 and take place in international waters off the Mediterranean coast of Israel. When first held six years ago, the annual maneuvers, dubbed Reliant Mermaid, drew widespread criticism throughout the Arab world, but now draw little criticism and even less media coverage. The exercise, simulating searches for ships in distress and wayward civilians, has become an exercise in improving coordination and interoperability between the forces ... When initially held, the image of Israeli and Turkish warships ploughing the eastern Mediterranean appeared to critics as a military axis and a partnership of like-minded democracies to supporters. Indeed, senior commanders on all sides have said that the search-and-rescue drills were aimed at laying down the framework for even wider future maneuvers."

Holocaust survivor to share his experience,

"Thomas Blatt made a promise as he sat in a Nazi death camp more than 60 years ago. If God let him live, he would always remember what happened to him and the other Jews. And he would make sure others never forgot. As one of the seven survivors left from the Sobibor extermination camp, Blatt has kept his promise. He spends much of his time traveling the world, recounting his experience in hopes of educating a new generation and keeping another from forgetting. The 76-year-old Seattle resident hopes to do just that Wednesday and Thursday when he comes to Bismarck. Blatt will spend time during his visit with students at Simle, Horizon and Wachter middle schools and Century High School. Wednesday night at 7 p.m. he will give a public presentation at Horizon ... It was Mark Hager who found Blatt and arranged for him to come to Bismarck. The Horizon global studies teacher regularly searched the Internet, typing in names of Holocaust survivors and Nazi concentration and death camps. About a year ago his usual search turned up something new. It was a site about a survivor and the book he wrote. At the bottom there was contact information. Hager sent an e-mail, expecting nothing in return. Blatt promptly replied ... "To those who do Holocaust research, those who are experts, Thomas Blatt is a pretty common name," said Hager, who uses Blatt's two books and movies in the classroom. "Some of my students are very well aware of who he is. But it's hard for a 15-year-old to fathom what happened in the Holocaust."

Kennedy Boulevard in Center City Philadelphia. The building, which was designed by world-renowned architect Robert A.M. Stern, will be named "Comcast Center," and is the largest private commercial development project to be developed in Pennsylvania. The announcement was made at a press conference today attended by Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian L. Roberts; Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen; Liberty Chairman and CEO William P. Hankowsky; Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street; Dennis Yablonsky, Secretary of Community and Economic Development for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; Robert A.M. Stern, Principal, Robert A.M. Stern Architects; and Mark S. Schweiker, President and CEO, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. The event took place at Liberty's offices in Philadelphia overlooking the future site of the building. Construction for Comcast Center will begin in mid-January 2005, and the building is expected to be complete in the fall of 2007. Comcast Center will rise 975 feet or 57 stories, and contain 1.2 million square feet of useable space. Comcast will initially occupy 24 floors, or about 44% of the rentable office space, encompassing 534,000 square feet. Comcast, which currently has 1,300 headquarters employees, is initially leasing sufficient space to accommodate more than 1,900 employees. Over the next decade, Comcast will have options to expand to accommodate 3,000 to 4,000 total employees ... Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. We're All Suckers for Playing that Game,

"For better or worse, this is part of the world of concepts we have created. To be called a tahman (a schemer) is a definite compliment. "Professor" is a disgraceful sobriquet, along with "good soul." As for sucker - there is no one stupider or more ridiculous than the person who wins that particular title. A sucker is a person who behaves according to the (unwritten) law. He pays his taxes, doesn't link up to cable TV without paying, and doesn't buy into the "one nation-one software program" as others do smilingly, understandingly, with pleasure and even undisguised pride - we'll fix those anti-Semites. We are record-breakers in stealing intellectual property and in illegal copying and smuggling of CDs. We have become a pariah state not only because our policy is incomprehensible and unacceptable, but also because we have become a major refuge for black-market money, a world center for trafficking in women, and attained seniority status as drug-sellers and smugglers. We are champions at passing bad checks and are persona non grata in foreign hotels if they're faucets are not soldered to the wall and their towels not under lock and key.If you stand in line, you're a sucker. Giving somebody the right-of-way puts you squarely in that category, as the taxi driver behind you will remind you with a loud blast of his horn. He passed me in that old jalopy? I'll show him who's a sucker. I'll drive on the shoulder, I'll zigzag between lanes, I'll endanger the lives of 30 drivers but he won't get ahead of me. What am I, a sucker? Meet requirements to get an academic degree? After all, the degree is not an education, it's about money, an add-on to salary; I'm no sucker who's going to devote two years of hard work to that. Does this sound over the top? Can anyone point to one aspect of our lives, be it medicine, agriculture, banking, or the vegetable market, that doesn't subscribe to this terrible norm? Are there many Israelis who will apply for a license to close off their balcony? And it's not limited to everyday behavior. We'll get out of Gaza, but when we do, Hamas will have a victory party and we, heaven forbid, will look like suckers. So let's kill as many as possible, blow up a few hundred houses, before we leave. Nobody can say we ran - they'll beg us to leave! (Army commanders have a sterile, scientific military term for this: "rehabilitation of the force of deterrence".) ... If we don't go back to being law-abiding suckers, and fast, and denounce in no uncertain terms the "non-suckers," there is a reasonable fear that the coming generations will decide that they are not suckers, and will get out of the country we are creating for them ... Court erupts over expert's testimony on `Arab mentality',

"The Haifa District Court was thrown into disarray Wednesday during testimony given by an expert witness on behalf of the State Prosecution in a case involving the Islamic Movement. At the height of the uproar, Judge Micha Lindenstrauss ordered one of the five defendants, Dr. Suliman Agbariya, out the courtroom. In protest, the remaining defendants and their supporters left the courtroom, too, directing cries of "You're a Nazi" at the state's expert. "The Arab mentality is made of "a sense of being a victim," "pathological anti-Semitism," and "a tendency to live in a world of illusions," said Prof. Rafi Israeli, a lecturer in Middle Eastern studies at Hebrew University, on the witness stand Wednesday, adding that the Arabs neglect sanitation in their communities. "Most of the Arab villages are dirtier, physically - it's a fact," he said. Professor Israeli is the last of the prosecution's witnesses in the case against five Islamic Movement members accused of security and financial offenses. The defense initially requested that Israeli's testimony be rejected, claiming the professor is identified with the extreme right - but his testimony was heard .. During cross-examination Wednesday, Israeli was asked to respond to questions on a number of issues concerning his viewpoint on the Arabs in Israel, Islam in general, and the sketch he offered of the nature of "the Arab mentality." The cross-examination, handled by attorneys Avigdor Feldman and Riad Anis, focused on the opinion Israeli wrote for the prosecution and, primarily, on quotes from a book he published in 2002 in which he describes Israel's Arabs as a fifth column "that sucks on the udders of the country." Wednesday in the witness box, Israeli reiterated that the Arabs were "a burden on the state."

"A former leftist radical who spent 16 years in prison for possessing explosives has withdrawn from teaching a college seminar after her hiring sparked protests. Susan Rosenberg made her decision because it was in the best interest of all parties, Hamilton College officials said Wednesday. In response to her hiring, prospective students withdrew applications and donors rescinded hundreds of thousands of dollars in pledges, school officials said. Rosenberg, who earned a master's degree in creative writing while in prison, was to teach a one-month course in January called "Resistance Memoirs: Writing, Identity and Change." She was hired through an on-campus organization that focuses on social justice issues. Rosenberg, who began her activism in the 1970s, was indicted in a 1981 armored car robbery carried out by a gang of radicals. A guard and two Nyack police officers were killed in a shootout. Rosenberg denied involvement in the robbery, and the charges eventually were dropped. She was convicted in 1984 of weapons possession. Prosecutors said she had more than 600 pounds of explosives that she and another defendant had planned to use in "non-lethal" bombings. Since Rosenberg's 58-year prison sentence was commuted in 2001 by President Clinton, she has worked as a writer and an activist for human rights, prisoner rights and AIDS. She teaches literature at John Jay School of Criminal Justice in New York."

"The head of a moving company and two employees have been convicted of conspiracy and extortion after dozens of customers testified they were drawn in by one price, only to face demands for more. Erik Deri, founder of now-defunct Nationwide Moving Systems in Woodinville, was convicted Monday in U.S. District Court of 27 counts of extortion and one of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and extortion. His brother, Yuval Derei, who uses a different spelling, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and extortion. Another employee, Yosef Nahum, was convicted of conspiracy and four counts of extortion. Robert Leen, Deri's lawyer, said the three Israelis face deportation after serving their sentences. Sentencing begins Jan. 10. Customers testified that they were sometimes told they had to pay more than they originally agreed to after their possessions had been loaded onto a truck. Government lawyers said the company's practices affected 50 people and were part of an attempt to bring in more than $1 million."

"Some say we all have a purpose on this Earth. Maybe it is Yaron Brook's purpose to remind us that as badly as the American venture in Iraq is going, it could be a lot worse. According to Brook, who is president of the California-based Ayn Rand Institute, our problem in Iraq is not the questionable loyalty of Iraqi soldiers too hastily thrown into action, not our own overextended and underequipped troops, not the failure of the international community to help us out, not even the faulty intelligence and the monumental hubris that got us into Iraq in the first place. No, it is America's moral cowardice. Brook's remarks came a day after 18 Americans were killed in Mosul when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside an American compound. The blame for those deaths, he said, lies not only with the insurgents but also with the "suicidal policies" of the Bush administration. "The insurgency would have been crushed long ago, and [the] attack averted, were it not for America's altruistic policy of placing the lives of Iraqi civilians above its own self-defense." And just how might we have "crushed" the insurgency that seems to be confounding U.S. hopes for meaningful elections by the end of January and a reasonably honorable exit from a war we shouldn't have launched? "This can be done," said Brook, "but to do so we must make the insurgency's complicit civilian population -- those who harbor and support the insurgents -- pay for the violence that they abet. We must enforce their complete surrender to our presence. Thanks to such a policy, during the occupation of Japan zero soldiers were killed by insurgents and the threat posed by the country was ended" ... If so, you had it backward. The shame of the Bush administration, says Brook, is that it "has been unwilling to make hostile Iraqi civilians pay for their crimes . . . [and] treated Iraqi lives as sacrosanct and American security and soldiers as dispensable." I've been trying to picture what an occupation based on Brook's ideas might look like. Wouldn't those "hostile Iraqi civilians" include large numbers of family members who opted to defend their fathers, sons and brothers in their resistance to the U.S.-led occupation, rather than turn them over to the foreign authorities? And wouldn't an attempt to make them "pay for their crimes" quickly become an irresistible tool for recruiting thousands more terrorists, in Iraq and elsewhere? ... "We need a fundamental shift in our moral priorities," he believes. "We need to see the military place the lives of Americans -- including American soldiers -- above the lives of Iraqi civilians. To those who insist that we continue to sacrifice for the sake of Iraqi civilians, I say that the death of [18] Americans . . . and the many more to come, are on your heads." If Brook and the Ayn Rand Institute hadn't been around for so long, I'd be tempted to think Karl Rove invented them to make the Bush administration seem temperate and humane by contrast."

"Not all Jewish advisers are particularly Jewish, but the news that a Connecticut prep school had a “messianic Jew” as its adviser caused an uproar in the Jewish community. The Greater Hartford Rabbinical Association asked officials at Miss Porter’s School late last year to replace Jessica Lemoine after the Connecticut Jewish Ledger reported that she was a member of a local “messianic Jewish” congregation and believes that “Yeshua,” or Jesus, is the Messiah. After all, “the New Testament is not a work given specific sanctity by Jews as the work of God,” says Rabbi Eric Polokoff, the spiritual leader of B’nai Israel in Southbury, Conn., and the associate chaplain of the Taft School. One rabbi who met with school officials said that the school at first didn’t understand why Jews didn’t see messianic Judaism as a legitimate branch of Judaism, but that school officials eventually understood why most Jews would be hostile to a person with Lemoine’s beliefs serving as an adviser to Jewish students. At the time, school officials said they would consider replacing Lemoine, but she is still in the position, though a local rabbi now is in occasional contact with the students. Officials at Miss Porter’s, a 160-year-old school that counts former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis among its graduates, did not return several phone calls seeking comment. Part of the problem in trying to replace Lemoine may be that students at the all-girls school in Farmington, Conn., seem pleased with Lemoine’s work. Lemoine pledges that she doesn’t proselytize the Jewish students. In an interview last year with the Jewish Ledger, she said she opposes the missionary work of Jews for Jesus."

"The use of forged British passports by Mossad assassination squads triggered a Foreign Office protest. But just as diplomats were about to call in the Israeli ambassador, it was discovered that civil servants elsewhere in Whitehall were in the process of renewing the UK passport held by a senior Israeli secret service agent. "David Kimche is... controller of Israeli intelligence service operations in western Europe," a secret Foreign Office memo said in 1974. "He is a member of the diplomatic staff in the Paris embassy. He was born in the UK and for many years had a British passport. This has expired." The murders of a Moroccan in Norway and Arab activists in Lebanon had infuriated diplomats when it was discovered that both had been carried out by Mossad agents, several of whom were using falsified British documents. The realisation that Kimche was about to get a new passport astonished officials. "This is really extraordinary," one wrote. "At the same time as the minister is about to protest to the Israeli ambassador over the misuse of British passports for Israeli intelligence operations, we are apparently contemplating issuing a British passport to a man who may well have been in charge of the operation complained of."

"Israeli police yesterday charged four antiquities collectors and dealers on 17 counts of forging some of the most treasured biblical artefacts to have surfaced in recent years. They included a limestone ossuary box said to have held the bones of James, the brother of Jesus, supposedly the oldest physical link to the New Testament; a tiny ivory pomegranate bought by the Israel Museum for $550,000 (£287,000) as the only known relic of King Solomon's Temple; and a stone tablet, from the ninth century BC, inscribed in ancient Hebrew with instructions by King Joash for maintaining the Temple. A 27-page indictment submitted to a Jerusalem magistrate after months of under- cover investigation alleged that the men - Oded Golan, Robert Deutsch, Shlomo Cohen and Faiz al-Amaleh - took genuine antiquities, then added false inscriptions to increase their value. They were clever enough to fool some of the world's most respected experts. Mr Golan, a leading Israeli collector, owned the "James ossuary", inscribed "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus," and the "Joash tablet". Detectives said they found a sophisticated laboratory in his home. The men are accused of painting the "improved" items with a special coating to imitate the patina that would accumulate over thousands of years. The ivory pomegranate is now thought to be much older than originally believed. The Israel Museum, a public body, paid the money into a numbered Swiss bank account in the 1980s and showed the exquisitely carved ivory, under spotlight and magnifying glass, as one of its most cherished possessions. It has been removed from display. Archaeologists are still trying to work out what it is, pierced as if it fitted on to a priestly sceptre. Prosecutors said the ring had been operating for 23 years. They added: "These items, many of them of great scientific, religious, sentimental, political and economic value, were created specifically with intent to defraud." Gil Kleiman, a police spokesman, added: "This was an attempt to change the history of the Jewish and Christian people." Shuka Dorfman, director of the Israel Antiquities Authority, said yesterday: "We only discovered the tip of the iceberg. This spans the globe. It generated millions of dollars" ... Israel jealously guards its ancient heritage. The state has first claim on any finds and it is illegal to sell or export antiquities without the Antiquities Authority's permission, but smuggling is widespread. One of the law's most notorious violators was the late Moshe Dayan, an enthusiastic amateur who used his position as defence minister to acquire objects uncovered in the occupied territories. The Israeli Museum paid his widow $1m for part of his private collection after his death."

"Anal sex is Jewish sex," Nathan Abrams, a young and energetic history lecturer told his audience in a talk he delivered at the University of Nottingham in England on Monday. Dozens of Jewish men and women attended the lecture, but no one got upset. No one was enraged. One of those present even asked with bemused curiosity: "Do you mean that heterosexual anal sex is more popular among Jews than in other religions?" Abrams admitted that he had no evidence. He based his argument on pornography produced by Jews and books written by Jews, mentioning names like Norman Mailer and Philip Roth. The audience listened politely. How can one explain this show of liberal tolerance? Perhaps it was the late hour of the day. While Abrams' lecture, "Porn Again Jews: Jewish Involvement in the Adult Film Industry," drew a fairly large crowd, it began only at 11 P.M. The audience had already endured two full days of nonstop lectures, from 8:00 A.M. until after midnight, on a wide range of subjects, including kabbala, ecology, demography, politics, Torah, sex education, Israeli rock, the occupation, media, medicine, and it was simply exhausting. How much knowledge can you absorb in a single day? How much skepticism can you generate? By night, anything funny or weird or irritating may be readily accepted, without being checked too carefully. Yet there may be a more substantive reason for the audience's response. Abrams' statements were accepted with such equanimity perhaps owing to the character of the event at which the lecture was given. This is Limmud, the massive annual gathering of British Jewry held during the week between Christmas and New Years Day - a season in which Britain's public arena is entirely consumed by Christian merrymaking. By any yardstick, it is an impressive event: Supremely organized by volunteers, offering a sumptuous menu of lectures (750 over five days) and a cornucopia of food, drink, music, fun and friendship. The large University of Nottingham college campus, located in a city that does not have a large Jewish community (the venue was chosen by Limmud organizers for prosaic reasons) was empty of students, who were on vacation. The hundreds of Jewish participants - adults and youngsters, men and women, Orthodox, Reform and secular, emphatically modest and astoundingly sexy, most from London and the rest from other British cities - braved the late December cold to attend lectures, meet others, eat, and just be together. Around the coffee bars by day, and near the pub by night, there was a tangible feeling - the intense glow of a successful party. The pure enjoyment was evident in the invigorating conversations, the smiles, the laughter. Limmud alumni invariably say "you come back on such a high," and can't wait for next year ... Sociologist Barry Kosmin and his colleague, Bible and Middle East scholar Winston Pickett - both prominent figures in the local Jewish community - also delivered talks. The two followed up on a lecture on Jewish demographics in Britain that was delivered by David Graham. According to the 2001 census, there are 267,000 Jews in Britain, with over 180,000 in London, and the rest scattered throughout Britain, including 26,000 in the Manchester area, 7,000 in Glasgow, and under 1,000 in Nottingham. In one lecture, Kosmin and Pickett addressed whether there is a new anti-Semitism against Jews, and in another they looked at how to brand the Jewish community ... Of course, there was also one celebrity at Limmud, the type who filled the main building's large auditorium, with a television camera recording the talk and a genuine feeling of excitement pervading the crowd. The guest was Lord Robert Winston, one of Britain's most prominent and admired Jews, who is an expert on genetics and fertility, the host of BBC Science programs, and an individual who wears a skullcap and often speaks and writes in the name of the community."

" - The Jewish Century,” by Yuri Slezkine. (Princeton University Press, $29.95). Yuri Slezkine opens this major new book by declaring: “The modern age is the Jewish age, and the 20th century, in particular, is the Jewish century.” This assertion may ring bells. Anti-Semites have long claimed that Jews, a miniscule fraction of the world’s population, exert a disproportionate influence, be it in local settings, such as fin de si?cle “Judapest” (as Budapest was known) or through that irrepressible literary trope, “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.” Along comes a university-trained historian and suggests that, indeed, the modern age has been permeated through and through by Jewish influence. But before we leap to a quick and erroneous conclusion, Slezkine is no anti-Semite. He is a gifted historian from Berkeley who has written a big, provocative and brilliant book. Indeed, in a year of big books that offer intriguing new perspectives on the Jewish condition — Philip Roth’s counterfactual “The Plot Against America” and Jonathan Sarna’s “American Judaism” come to mind — Slezkine’s “The Jewish Century” may be the most important. And what is most intriguing in the book is the claim that those qualities that the Jews have historically embodied and still represent — social mobility, economic ingenuity, intellectual achievement — are the defining features of the modern age, all the more so in the era of globalization ... Could we not argue as plausibly that the 20th century was the century of genocide, or totalitarianism, or capitalism, or, perhaps, of the Americans? It is certainly the case that Jews figured prominently in some or many of the century’s dramas. Franz Kafka, Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein surely had a major hand in defining the cultural and intellectual direction of the century. And it may well be that the Shoah is the paradigmatic act of genocide — and anti-Semitism, the longest and most enduring of hatreds ... Despite these reservations about the book’s core thesis, I hasten to add my admiration — I dare say envy — for “The Jewish Century.” It is a work of staggering erudition, literary grace and most precious of all, big ideas. While one may disagree with its big ideas, it is hard to avoid being stimulated by them. It is equally hard to deny the book’s contribution to our understanding of modern Jewish history ... A Russian-born historian of partial Jewish origin, Slezkine happened on to this book by chance. Initially, he was interested merely in producing a textured social history of life in a certain apartment building in Moscow. This point of entry soon led him to a broader domain of inquiry: the story of Soviet Jewish communists, a fair number of whom populated the apartment in question. Slezkine used these Jewish communists, a few of whom were his own relatives, to unfold an even larger story: the unsurpassed success of Jews in gaining access to positions of prestige and power in the Soviet Union in the early decades after the Bolshevik Revolution, only to end up — after Stalin’s purges began — as one of the most anti-Soviet and oppressed groups of all .. Indeed, “The Jewish Century” is, among other virtues, a feast of literary delights, with extended borrowings from and learned excurses on Pushkin, Proust, Dostoevsky, Kafka, Joseph Roth, Osip Mandelstam, Vassily Grossman and Roth, to mention but a few."

"The first real case (Benedict Arnold aside) of Fifth Columnists inside America working for foreign interests are the neoconservatives, the best known of whom include David Frum, William Kristol, Norman and John Podhoretz, Michael Ledeen, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, and the egregious Douglas Feith, as close to being a foreign agent as is possible to be but still holding on to his job at the Pentagon. America's Fifth Columnists aim to shape United States foreign policy to suit Israeli interests. The gruesome carnage in Iraq is proof that this administration is ready to fight Israeli battles to the last American marine. We have lost more than 1,200 dead, 30,000 wounded, and have killed an unknown number of Iraqis, not all of them insurgents or terrorists. We have military hospitals full of blind and crippled young men and women, while thousands of Iraqis and their children are mortared and shot daily. Despite the bloodshed, however, victory in Iraq is still up for grabs. Not only have the neocons not bothered to apologize, they want more blood. Mind you, there are no Frums dying among our troops. Instead, they are ensconced inside the Beltway appearing on television and egging the president on to Tehran and Damascus. In a soundbite age, "War on Terror" has a good ring to it. Once upon a time, Christian missionaries tried to vanquish "evil savages" by teaching them religion. Now we try to teach them democracy. The way America's Fifth Column operates is a simple one. It uses the charge of anti-Semitism to smear honorable conservatives who do not believe that Uncle Sam's and Israel's interests are one and the same. (The most outrageous exampie was when Midge Decter accused the venerable conservative Russell Kirk of anti-Semitism.) David Frum, a sleazy self-promoter, infamously painted conservative writers like Pat Buchanan, Paul Gottfried, Samuel Francis, Tom Fleming, and others as unpatriotic Americans, forgetting to mention that in his book "unpatriotic" means not serving the interests of the state of Israel. Norman Podhoretz's "World War-IV" is a blueprint for an endless campaign to destroy all of Israel's enemies. Why are these bogus patriots getting away with such stuff? Alas, it is a very easy question to answer. With 85,000 members, a staff of 165, and a $33.4 million annual budget, AIPAC, the American Israel Political Affairs Committee, is Washington's most influential and most feared lobby. It is forceful, extremely aggressive, and more or less calls the tune inside the Beltway where the Middle East is concerned. Woe to the politician who ignores its wishes. He will be targeted, his opponents showered with donations, his reputation immediately shredded by charges of anti-Semitism. Neocons work closely with AIPAC and the Israeli embassy. As Philip Giraldi wrote in this magazine, "Principal neocons have been accused of illegally providing classified information to Israel. None was ever prosecuted." Last I heard AIPAC was busy accusing the FBI and the CIA of pursuing a vendetta against Israel and the Pentagon, while neocon Michael Rubin of the American Enterprise Institute alleges that the Franklin affair was motivated by anti-Semitism. America's pro-Israel stand is nothing new. Israel is, after all, our closest ally in the region, despite the spying it regularly conducts on Uncle Sam. If there ever was a one-sided marriage, this is it. As Thomas Friedman wrote in the New York Times, "there is a steadily rising perception across the Arab-Muslim world that the great enemy of Islam is JIA -- Jews, Israel and America, all lumped together in a single threat." Friedman goes on to say that Arab satellite television stations show split-screen images of Israelis bashing Palestinians and Americans beating up Iraqi insurgents. Nothing new here. Arab preachers, mostly paid by our other "allies," the Saudi rulers, explain all the world's ills by wrapping them up in JIA. But Arab lies and outrageous anti-Western propaganda aside, the Bush regime's total embrace of Ariel Sharon makes it impossible to know where American policy stops and Sharon's begins. Now, with Colin Powell gone, my fears are that Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz; and Undersecretary Douglas Feith -- two of the most bluster-prone cheerleaders of the Iraq War and of Ariel Sharon's brutal and expansionist strategy on the West Bank-will enjoy even more power and influence. Under normal circumstances, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Feith, and others would have been dismissed on the spot, and neocon propagandists such as Frum, Kristol, Podhoretz, Perle, and their ilk denounced as working for a foreign power. But we are not living in normal times. This is the time of AIPAC, and woe to those who oppose America's Fifth Column, starting with poor little me. "

"Keeping alive hard lessons from the past is the goal behind a proposed law that would require Holocaust education for all high school students in Indiana. Rep. Clyde Kersey, D-Terre Haute, said his sponsorship of House Bill 1047 would require each school district to include a study of the genocide of 6 million Jews by the Nazis during World War II as a part of its high school social studies curriculum. If approved, the law would take effect with the start of the 2005-06 school year. The Department of Education already includes Holocaust studies in its required standards for schools. Kersey wants to add extra weight to those standards and make that particular lesson required by law. "We are not adding to the curriculum, we are just making sure (it's taught)," Kersey said. "We don't ever want that (lesson) to fade." Local educators -- including Kelly Watson, a teacher at Fishers Junior High and a Mandel Fellow of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum -- support Kersey's idea. "It's great," Watson said. She also wants to make sure that if it's approved, teachers have plenty of resources available for their lessons. "To have it required, we need a curriculum guide, a group of people who are willing to help teachers," Watson said. "Teachers are overwhelmed with the amount of material there is to teach. They want to do a good job. They realize there's so much, they may not feel comfortable with it." Watson and other fellows have worked with the Indianapolis Bureau of Jewish Education to offer workshops for teachers, and the sessions have been a good resource for those able to take advantage of them. "We don't have the museums, the centers, like some of the states do, but we do have the workshops," she said. "All throughout the state there are people doing some great work with Holocaust education." North Central European history teacher Bill Gulde agreed the law is a good safeguard. "The Holocaust is touched upon in the state standards in both the world history curriculum and the U.S. history curriculum, but it never hurts to drive home the point," Gulde said. "I would hate to think that a school would skip over it. It would be good to require it" ... Moving the lesson forward was part of the reason Eva Kor, a survivor of Auschwitz, wanted Kersey to sponsor the bill. Kor is the founder of the CANDLES Holocaust Museum in Terre Haute. "The tears still welled in David Ganz's eyes when the film ended, though it was the fourth time he had watched "Paper Clips." The documentary tells the story of a tiny school in Tennessee that built a Holocaust memorial in a place where there were no Jews, in a town where few people knew much about one of the world's darkest times. Now Ganz is waging a grass-roots campaign to deliver the documentary to every school in America, so that everyone can learn about the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis, and the struggling white, Protestant town that shelters their memory. "You see?" Ganz whispered as the credits rolled on the film showing at Coolidge Corner Theatre. "You see what's driving me?" Ganz, who turns 71 this month, is a simple man in charge of an international tire company, Galaxy Tire and Wheel, based in Malden. He avoids black-tie galas. His business card says "sales" instead of his real title -- chairman. Normally he keeps quiet about his donations, including several thousand dollars in college scholarships he has pledged to some of the Tennessee students who worked on the memorial. But this idea requires deeper pockets. He wants a DVD of the film -- named for the clips Norwegians invented and wore on their shirt collars as a symbol of defiance against the Nazis -- to go to all public schools, which at last count numbered 94,000 nationwide. It's unclear how much the DVDs would cost, but at $10 to $20 each, for example, the total would range from $1 million to $2 million. Ganz was moved by the film's message about tolerance and how the initiative of a few can make such a big difference. He was also stunned that many of the students knew little about the Holocaust, and resolved that no one should graduate without knowing the history. "This film, if we can get it into the schools, can change the world," he said. A spokesman at Miramax, which supported the film and is helping an independent company distribute it, welcomed Ganz's idea. The company hopes to coordinate Ganz's effort with the Anti-Defamation League and others who have expressed similar interest nationwide, said Miramax spokesman Matthew Hiltzik. Writer and co-director Joe Fab said one of the early goals was to produce something that would be useful in schools. "We've always wanted that," Fab said. The Anti-Defamation League plans to distribute a version of the film along with a teaching guide for classrooms. They are raising money and hope to make the packages available free in the spring to teachers who request them, said Rob Leikind, director of the league's New England office. Ganz wants to do more. If a Holocaust memorial can spring up in a tiny town in Tennessee, why can't he bring the film to every school in America? The documentary recounts an eighth-grade project at Whitwell Middle School in tiny Whitwell, about a half-hour away from Chattanooga. In 1998, the school had decided to do a class project on the Holocaust, but it was hard for a town of less than 2,000 people to fathom 6 million dead. The teachers and students decided to collect one paper clip for each person killed. The project trudged along until the international media caught on. First, two German journalists learned about it, then news of the project was published in American papers and broadcast on national TV. Before long, Whitwell Middle School was overflowing with heart-wrenching letters from Holocaust survivors, their families, and more than 30 million paper clips. As the students and teachers sorted the letters and counted the clips, they decided to create a bigger memorial. In 2001, the German journalists helped the school obtain a train car that had once taken victims to concentration camps. Townspeople refurbished the wooden car and today it showcases the letters, a suitcase filled with apology notes from German students to Anne Frank, and paper clips. Whitwell students give tours to about 100 people each month, and letters and e-mails arrive daily ... Ganz first saw the film more than a year ago at the Boston Jewish Film Festival. After he saw it, he called Hooper to quietly donate scholarships to students. At the principal's request, he visited the school last May and handed out the scholarships himself. Late last year the film was released to a wider audience in theaters from New York to Los Angeles. But reviews were mixed: Some lauded the film; others said the documentary's narrative was weak ... Last month, Ganz bought out the West Newton Cinema and invited 200 teachers and community members to see it for free. He asked a Brookline-based nonprofit, Facing History and Ourselves, which has developed teaching guides for film, to work with him. He called his friends, including Michael Frieze, chairman of Gordon Brothers, the Boston-based restructuring firm, who was impressed that his behind-the-scenes friend was willing to take a role center stage. "He's taking it on as a sort of adopted child," Frieze said. The actor Leonard Nimoy, a Boston native, and his wife, Susan, are joining Ganz's effort to bring "Paper Clips" to all schools."

Interfaith relations essay wins student $25,000 top honor,

"Shuffling between classes at Emory University's Candler School of Theology, Adam Meredith-Ployd saw an intriguing opportunity to apply what he'd learned in his studies on the history of Christians and Jews - an opportunity worth $25,000. Following Mel Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ," which drew criticism that it contained destructive Christian stereotypes of Jews, an essay contest had been founded to promote understanding between the two faiths. "It highlighted a conflict that can be invisible in a lot of ways," said Meredith-Ployd, a 22-year-old Christian graduate student whose essay took the top award last month. "I think what 'Passion' brought out is there's still residual issues between Christians and Jews that are 2,000 years old." The contest's founder, 25-year-old magazine heiress Elizabeth Goldhirsh, said she created the competition for people 16 to 22 in the wake of the movie; the aim was to try to develop some interfaith unity within the younger generation. "Unfortunately, we've grown up with so many leaders on TV using religion for very negative purposes," said Goldhirsh, who is Jewish. "When you think about other religions, you think about conflict rather than what brings everyone together." Goldhirsh, a Harvard Divinity School graduate student and daughter of the late Inc. magazine founder Bernie Goldhirsh, said she offered a large prize package - a total of $100,000 was awarded, making it one of the most lucrative writing contests in the nation - to attract interest in the issue. The strategy worked. Four thousand entries came in, though what they showed was a surprising lack of familiarity with building interfaith relationships in general, said the Rev. Christopher Leighton, executive director of the Baltimore-based Institute of Christian & Jewish Studies and one of the contest's judges. The problem, Leighton said, was that many of the entrants - particularly Christians - thought the answer was to make the other side see the error of its ways, rather than to promote respect for differing theological points of view. Organizers found that many entrants "haven't developed the ability to cross a border to comprehend the religious sensibilities of their neighbors," Leighton said. "The essay contest confirmed how much work needs to be done" ... In the contest-winning essay, Meredith-Ployd found common ground in Christians' and Jews' view of time, based on the Bible's account of the seven-day creation of the world in Genesis. Both faiths, he noted, honor the seven-day cycle that culminates on the Jewish Sabbath and Christian Sunday. "For all of its attempts to portray abortion doctor Henry Morgentaler as a warts-all personality, Choice, the CTV Signature movie airing next Wednesday night, certainly stacks the deck in his favour. The script by Suzette Couture shows Morgentaler to be egotistical, a womanizer and callous to those close to him while basking in the glory of his crusader notoriety. Still, the legal and political systems fare much worse in this dramatic chronicle which begins in 1967 with Morgentaler's first thoughts about defying the law, up to 1988 and the landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision that stuck down the country's abortion laws as unconstitutional. "For the first time in my life, I am breaking the law, the law of the country that adopted me," the doctor says ominously as he takes the first steps in his crusade. As engagingly portrayed by David Eisner, Morgentaler is not a very likable man, but he does have the courage of his convictions. There are some intense moments: graphic photographs showing victims of back-alley abortions and a sequence in prison in Quebec when guards stripped, beat and humiliated him, provoking a heart attack and understandably recalling the Holocaust survivor's earlier ordeals in Dachau and Auschwitz. In Toronto he is attacked with a trowel and police burst into his operating room during an actual procedure to make arrests. In a mailed envelope he receives a bullet with the note "This one's for you, Kike." What seems surprising is that it was only a few short decades ago that the country was so polarized between the pro-life and pro-choice movements, with the U.S. high court having already struck down abortion laws in that country via Roe vs. Wade. But a postscript also recalls that the fanaticism hasn't abated. In 1993 a bomb exploded at Morgentaler's Toronto clinic. We are also told he now operates clinics in seven provinces and is still fighting - not for legalization but for full government funding for the clinics."

"Poland is demanding the extradition from Israel of an elderly Jewish man accused of the deaths of hundreds of Germans in a postwar detention camp. Solomon Morel, 86, faces charges of crimes against humanity in relation to more than 1500 inmates at a camp in southern Poland, many of whom perished in "barbaric" circumstances. The investigation is the first in Poland into a Jew accused of retaliating against the Germans, and poses potentially awkward questions for Israel about its attitude towards those allegedly involved in revenge killings. Israeli officials turned down a previous extradition request six years ago. Morel, who fled to Israel from Poland in 1994 and lives in hiding in Tel Aviv, was held in Auschwitz as a young man. More than 30 members of his family were killed by the Nazis. In November 1945, after the Soviet occupation of Poland began, he was one of many Jews appointed by Stalin to supervise the brutal denazification camps, where up to 80,000 ethnic Germans are believed to have died as a result of torture, starvation and typhus. Stalin picked Jews as camp commandants knowing they would show little mercy to the inmates. According to John Sack, the late author of An Eye for An Eye: The Untold Story of Jewish Revenge Against Germans in 1945, Morel made his desire for revenge clear from the day the camp at Swietochlowice opened. In a television interview before his death last year, Sack said: "On the first night at Swietochlowice, when the first contingent of Germans arrived, at about 10 o'clock at night he walked into one of the barracks and he said to the Germans, 'My name is Morel. I am a Jew. My mother and father, my family, I think they're all dead, and I swore that if I got out alive, I was going to get back at you Nazis. And now you're going to pay for what you did.' " In his book, Sack, himself a Jew, describes in detail the alleged atrocities committed at the camp: "The guards put the Germans into a doghouse, beating them if they didn't say 'bow-wow'. They got the Germans to beat each other; to jump on each other's spines and to punch each other's noses, and hit the Germans so hard that they once knocked a German's glass eye out." Guards also raped German women and trained dogs to bite off German men's genitals on command, Sack said. The Israeli Justice Ministry said it was "in the process of examining" the extradition request."

"Jews in Switzerland are reportedly “infuriated” at a passage in the government’s new extremist report that refers to Jewish extremism in the country. A delegation of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities is calling for an explanation when it meets justice minister Christoph Blocher on January 18. "There is no Jewish extremism here. There are armed security people here and there at Jewish institutions. But it is completely legal and is carried out at places where unfortunately the state is not in a position to look after our security,” commented Alfred Donath, president of the Federation. “But these people are not militant Jews. The accusation of extremism is totally false,” he added. In the latest amended version of the extremist report, there is a passage which reads that “anti-Semitic action could lead to Jewish extremism prepared for violence. Cannot understand In an interview with the “NZZ am Sonntag” newspaper, Donath says he cannot understand why the passage is still in the corrected version of the report. "We would like to like to know that too! Is it dilettantism or bad will? A delegation of Swiss Jews will visit the minister responsible, justice minister Christoph Blocher, on January 18 for clarification on this issue,” Donath commented. He told the newspaper that the Federation would be asking for the entire passage referring to Jewish extremism to be taken out of the report. Asked whether there were not Swiss Jews who had radical positions, Donath explained that the spectrum of opinions about the Middle East situation was “naturally large”, both among Swiss Jews and the rest of the Swiss population. “But to construe from that we have an extremism prepared for violence is completely unfounded,” he said."

"The next time you look at your pay stub and notice how much has been withheld in state taxes, or pony up extra cash to pay the sales tax at the mall, or pick up a bottle of wine in a liquor store, think of Patricia Freund. Freund is an employee of the state Liquor Authority. She is paid $82,789 a year. For that money, she reads novels, daydreams and otherwise wastes her time all day, she has said in court papers. But don't blame the 50-year-old widow, who has been a state worker for 25 years. She wants to work. In fact she is suing her agency in federal court to be allowed to work. But she says she is not being permitted by her bosses to work. As the Albany Times Union has disclosed, she virtually never gets any assignments from her boss, authority Chairman Edward Kelly, even though she is his special assistant, and virtually never talks to co-workers and never gets any phone calls. Her files have been removed from her office. She just whiles away her workdays, even as her pay and benefits continue. The total cost of her employment to taxpayers, when fringes are added, is more than $100,000 a year. This outrage is going on in a state government that taxes its residents (combined with local governments) more heavily than any other state in the country ... That seems like a reasonable standard that most taxpayers are also required to meet on their jobs. But that doesn't tell the whole story. In a lawsuit filed in Federal District Court in Albany, Freund says her problems began several years ago with Gov. George Pataki's annual prayer breakfast. The event, which Pataki has held annually for a decade at the Empire State Plaza's convention center across the street from the Capitol, is private, but is heavily attended by administration officials and lobbyists ... Freund said she was encouraged in 2000 to go by her superiors, who saw the breakfast as a way to increase the agency visibility within the administration. But as a practicing Jew she was offended by the Bible she was given with Pataki's name inside it. It included passages such as ''Confidence in Jesus stands above all other creeds.'' She eventually asked why people in her agency were going to the event. She didn't attend in 2001, and claims as a result of that was stripped of her job as director of wholesale services in 2002. She was named Kelly's assistant and since has been given little to do. A lawyer for the state counters that ''no adverse employment action was taken against the plaintiff by any of the defendants.'' So her constitutional rights weren't violated, he claimed. It's up to the courts to decide whether Freund's rights have been violated. There are undoubtedly some people who would revel in getting paid for doing nothing. But there seems to be no ambiguity in the issue for taxpayers. If she did something wrong, get her off the payroll. If not, give her something to do. We want to get our $100,000-a-year's worth. And tell us why the situation was allowed to develop in the first place."

The group said it had severed the head and right arm of the statue in Dublin's Fairview Park in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. They said that as Europe prepares to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camps, they could no longer tolerate a statue in honour of Sean Russell. Russell was commanding officer of the IRA during the Second World War and conducted a campaign of assassination and sabotage in both Britain and Ireland, aimed at damaging the war effort against Hitler. Although an open ally of the Nazis, Russell is still honoured by the modern IRA and Sinn Fein. In September 2003, Sinn Fein MEP Mary Lou McDonald spoke at a rally to commemorate Russell in the north Dublin park. The same rally was also addressed by veteran IRA man Brian Keenan."

Spat Erupts Between Neocons, Intelligence Community,

"Last June, leading neoconservative Richard Perle received an unexpected phone call at his home. It was Larry Franklin calling. Franklin is the veteran Iran specialist in the Pentagon’s Near East South Asia office, and the key Iraq war planner who had been pressured by the FBI into launching a series of counterintelligence stings. Perle, a former chairman of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board, was an architect of the 2003 Iraq war. Franklin, who never had phoned before, asked Perle to “convey a message to Chalabi” in Iraq, according to sources aware of the call. Ahmad Chalabi is the embattled president of the Iraqi National Congress. He is currently at the vortex of a Pentagon-intelligence community conflict over pre- and postwar policy, but is still endorsed by neoconservatives, such as Perle. Something about Franklin’s unexpected call struck Perle as “weird,” according to the sources. Why was Franklin calling? In the recent past, Perle had only encountered Franklin a few times in passing, the sources say. Perle became “impatient” to end his brief conversation with Franklin, and finally just declined to pass a message to Chalabi or to cooperate in any way, according to the sources. Perle himself refused to comment. While the purpose of the mysterious call to Perle is still unclear, a source with knowledge of Franklin’s calls suggests that Franklin might have been trying to warn Perle and Chalabi that conflict between the counterintelligence community and the neoconservatives and the Chalabi camp was spinning out of control. Unbeknownst to Franklin, the FBI was listening. Indeed, by the time Franklin phoned Perle, Franklin had been under surveillance for at least a year by the FBI’s counterintelligence division, which is led by controversial Counterintelligence Chief David Szady. Franklin had been monitored since a meeting June 26, 2003, at the Tivoli Restaurant in Virginia, where he discussed a classified Iran policy document with officials of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. He also was monitored late last May while responding to a routine media inquiry by CBS reporters about Iran’s intelligence activities in Iraq, according to multiple sources. The CBS call was pivotal.
Among the reporters who spoke to Franklin in late May, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the call, was former CIA attorney Adam Ciralsky, who had joined CBS as a reporter. During that call, Franklin purportedly revealed classified information, according to the sources. In late June, Szady’s FBI counterintelligence division finally confronted a shocked Franklin with evidence of his monitored calls. The bureau arranged for Franklin to be placed on administrative leave without pay, and then threatened him with years of imprisonment unless Franklin engaged in a series of stings against a list of prominent Washington targets, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the FBI’s actions in the case. Terrified, needing to provide for a wheelchair-bound wife and five children, and without the benefit of legal representation, Franklin agreed to ensnare the individuals on the FBI sting list, the sources said. The list may include as many as six names, according to sources. In a special Jewish Telegraphic Agency investigation, this reporter first revealed Franklin’s stings and the circumstances surrounding them. Aipac was stung July 21. That day, Franklin met an Aipac official in a Virginia mall and urged that information be passed to Israel that Israelis operating in northern Kurdistan were in danger of being kidnapped and killed by Iranian intelligence, according to multiple sources. That information — the validity of which has been questioned — was reportedly passed to the Israeli Embassy, thereby providing the FBI with a basis for search warrants and threats of an espionage prosecution against Aipac Policy Director Steve Rosen and Aipac Iran specialist Keith Weissman, according to the sources. Aipac officials contacted declined to comment. Attorneys familiar with FBI security prosecutions identify Section 794 and 798 of the Espionage Act as ideally suited to the FBI’s sting strategy. Section 798, entitled “Disclosure of Classified Information,” applies to “Whoever knowingly and willfully communicates, furnishes, [or] transmits… for the benefit of any foreign government to the detriment of the United States any classified information… concerning the communication of intelligence activities of the United States or any foreign government.” That sweeping statute would cover classified information not only about America, but also about Iran and Iraq ... In August, Franklin, still without legal counsel, was also directed by the FBI to call Ciralsky, who by this time had moved from CBS to NBC, where he was working on security developments in Iran, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of Franklin’s calls. Franklin tried to set up a meeting with Ciralsky, but no such meeting ever occurred, according to sources familiar with the call, because shortly thereafter, on August 27, the FBI’s raids against Aipac were leaked to CBS. Franklin actions were now public. Before joining CBS, reporter Ciralsky was working as an attorney for the CIA, but was allegedly forced out in 1999 during the course of an inquiry into his family background and his Jewish affiliations. Ciralsky later filed a harassment lawsuit against the CIA that is still pending. The man who supervised much of the CIA investigation of Ciralsky and then the FBI’s investigation of Franklin following the May conversation with Ciralsky was Szady. In a JTA investigation, this reporter revealed exclusively his involvement with Ciralsky. Critics of the current investigation point to Szady’s involvement in the probe of Ciralsky a decade ago to raise questions about a possibly larger agenda. One question involves the media; since Ciralsky is now a reporter with NBC, some critics raise the specter of Szady’s FBI counterintelligence division consciously trying to entrap a member of the media engaged in routinely contacting sources. One source with direct knowledge of Franklin’s stings said it amounted to an “enemies list.” Ciralsky refused to comment. FBI officials repeatedly refused to discuss the Franklin stings. The bureau also refused to respond to questions about whether members of the media — including those at CBS, NBC and even this reporter — are under surveillance as part of their investigation. But at one point, a senior FBI official with knowledge of the case finally stated, “I cannot confirm or deny that information” due to “the pending investigation.”
Some Washington insiders believe that the FBI’s multiple stings are far from routine counterintelligence but represent a “war” between the counterintelligence community and policymakers, especially neocons. One key insider explained the war this way: “It is two diametrically opposed ways of thinking. The neocons have an interventionist mindset willing to ally with anyone to defeat world terrorism, and they see the intelligence community as too passive. The intelligence community sees the neocons as wild men willing to champion any foreign source — no matter how specious — if it suits their ideology.”

"The World Jewish Congress, which has wrung billions of dollars in Holocaust restitution from European governments and companies, is being investigated by the authorities in New York following a series of unusual money transfers of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The influential international group, which was founded in the Thirties to counter growing anti-Semitism, has attracted the attention of Elliot Spitzer, the New York state attorney general, who is making informal inquiries into the transfers ordered by Rabbi Israel Singer, the president of the WJC since 1985. It is possible his office could order a full-scale inquiry. The inquiries follow a series of allegations about the organisation's accounting practices by its most outspoken internal critic, Isi Liebler, the WJC's senior vice-president. Mr Liebler, who has declined to comment in public, has demanded a full independent audit of the group's finances. The WJC was established in 1936 to try to counter growing anti-Semitism and mobilise the world against the Nazi onslaught. In recent years the group, which has its international headquarters in New York, has been responsible for obtaining compensation and restitution for survivors of the Holocaust and has secured millions of dollars in payments from Swiss banks. The investigation by Mr Spitzer's office is reportedly focussing on payments ordered by Rabbi Singer between October 2002 to February last year. In that five-month period he ordered the transfer of $1.2m (£630,000) of the WJC's funds to a numbered bank account in a bank in Geneva. The staff in its Geneva office said they were not aware of such an account. In an effort to overhaul the group's accounting practices, as well as improve its public image, its chief patron, the billionaire Egar Bronfman, has ordered an internal review. That is being carried out by Stephen Herberts. Mr Herberts has reportedly met with Mr Liebler in Israel to discuss his demands for a full audit ... The provisions would create an Office of Justice for Victims of Overseas Terrorism within the Justice Department. Justice and State Department officials would form a task force when terrorists kill an American citizen overseas. Named after a 13-year-old Israeli-American boy who was killed by a Palestinian mob in the West Bank in 2001, the bill has been a ZOA priority. It originally was designed to place pressure on the U.S. government to find Palestinians who had killed Americans in terrorist attacks against Israel. ... Klein [head of the Zionist Organization of America] said he's happy with the current legislation, and that his organization had looked at every possible avenue to get the provisions through Congress. "Our vision is very clear," Klein said. "We are looking forward to this office taking as the central focus of its existence the prosecution of Palestinian Arabs who killed Americans." Other Jewish leaders said the legislation could have been passed earlier if it had been directed more broadly. "Is it possible that we are now getting recruits that have been pre-programmed by American society? Of course it is! Take violence for example. According to Abelard.org “The average American child will have watched 100,000 acts of televised violence, including 8,000 depictions of murder, by the time he or she finishes the sixth grade (approximately 13 years old).” Pretty startling, huh? Bet you didn’t know that. Think about your own children in today’s permissive society where television serves as the “great babysitter” of children.
Consider this: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “The level of during Saturday morning cartoons is higher than the level of violence during prime time programming. There are 3 to 5 violent acts per hour in prime time vs. 20 to 25 violent acts per hour on Saturday morning.” Just think about how many children are watching Saturday morning cartoons. I used to every Saturday morning. Did you as well? If so, we might be more violent than we would have been if we did not have a television. We would not have seen as many violent acts or depictions of violent acts were it not for TV. We usually saw shows in black and white, now you can see the blood in bright red color, which makes even more of an impression in the minds of young children and teens. They want, make that demand, sequels of movies like Chucky, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, the Texas Chain Saw Massacres and other types of violent movies. Dr. George Gerbner, from the University of Pennsylvania states “Children who watch a lot of television are more likely to think that the world is a mean and dangerous place.” Is it? Think about it. As a society, are we more violent? Do we commit more violent acts than generations before us that did not have television? Is the world a mean and dangerous place? It depends where you live and what you learn and who teaches you. If the television is teaching your children values, mores, beliefs, behaviors, there is a significant problem and no wonder we are producing a lot of violent adults in this country. The American Psychological Association, after reviewing hundreds of research findings, states three major national studies have concluded that heavy exposure to TV violence is one of the most significant causes of violence in society. They also go on to say that by the age of 18, the average American child will have viewed about 200,000 acts of violence on television alone. That does not include violent movies or violent video games. If you don’t believe it, just turn on the local news to see how many violent acts were committed just that day, especially in big cities. “If it bleeds, it leads” is the popular mantra that is used by the reporters when they are looking for big stories to report. Columbia University & New York State Psychiatric Institute conducted a study which determined “Teenagers who watch more than an hour of TV a day during early adolescence are more likely to be violent later in life. The rate of violence -- assaults, fights, robberies -- increases dramatically if daily TV time exceeds three hours. The study also shows a five-fold increase in aggressive behavior from less than an hour to three or more hours of TV watching ... The Josephson Institute of Ethics, after conducting a national survey, found that “43 percent of high school and 37 percent of middle school boys believe it is ok to hit or threaten a person that makes them angry.” The same survey found that “75 percent of all boys and over 60 percent of all teenage girls said they hit someone in the last 12 months because they were angry.” These are the same students that are recruited into the Army. Think these anger issues are resolved before they enter the military? Think they won’t be a problem in the future? Think again. Not only could they result in the Army being forced to separate the individual, someone could get seriously hurt. No wonder we have problems with domestic violence and substance abuse in the Army. We are getting new recruits with anger and violence issues. We don’t have much of a choice if there is no record for an individual committing and being charged with a criminal act of violence, so this individual is allowed to join the Army. While the anger and violence may be suppressed for a while through basic training and advanced individual training, it will surface soon enough once the Soldier is assigned to a unit and starts doing his/her job. We are having more and more domestic and violent acts committed by Soldiers, and I believe it is because we are getting individuals who are preprogrammed for violence."

Republicans removed a measure that would have expanded federal involvement in prosecuting hate crimes. The Republican leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives removed the provision from a pending defense bill, even though it had passed both houses. The Anti-Defamation League said it was “disappointed” by the decision, which would have enabled the Department of Justice to expand its involvement in local prosecutions of hate crimes. ADL had lobbied for the legislation. “We will carry this forward into the next administration and the next Congress,” the ADL said in a statement.
ACLU aids Pollard,
The American Civil Liberties Union and several other groups have filed briefs supporting Jonathan Pollard. The brief supports Pollard in his appeal of a U.S. District Court ruling denying his attorneys access to classified information that was used in determining the former civilian U.S. Navy intelligence analyst’s life sentence for spying for Israel. The brief also was supported by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists and several New York officials. A hearing on the appeal is set for January before a three-judge panel."

"Shimon Naor (Hershkowitz) was a colonel in the manpower section of the Navy. In the 1990s, after he received the authorization of the Defense Ministry, he became an international arms dealer. In 1999 Naor was arrested in Romania for arms smuggling to the UNITA rebels (National Union for Total Independence of Angola), for using forged documents, and contravening a United Nations arms embargo. The United Nations asked Israel, through the Foreign Ministry, to assist in the investigation but was confronted by a decisive cold shoulder from the senior triad in charge of arms sales at the Defense Ministry: Director General Amos Yaron, his deputy and the person in charge of internal security Yehiel Horev, and Yossi Ben-Hanan, head of foreign military assistance (SIBAT), who is also responsible for issuing permits for exports of military sales. The deputy defense minister at the time, Ephraim Sneh, tried to assist Naor, but the Romanians refused to release him. In the end, Naor managed to gain his release on bail and fled to Israel. In Romania he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in absentia, and is considered a fugitive from justice. Still, he continues to trade in arms. Naor's name was mentioned last Thursday in a story published in Al-Sharq al-Awsat, the Arabic-language daily based in London. It was one of four reports this month that dealt with the role of Israel in controversial, or illegal, arms deals around the world. According to the story, two Israelis were arrested in Jordan on suspicion of smuggling arms and training rebels in Sudan. The report claimed that those arrested had mentioned the names of three arms dealers and security consultants from Israel: the son of the former chief of the Mossad, MK Danny Yatom, Shimon Naor, and Amos Golan. The latter two denied the veracity of the report, as did Yatom on behalf of his son. Golan has a factory that manufactures pistols capable of firing around corners, and was a colonel and commander of the undercover IDF Duvdevan unit, which specializes in disguising themselves as Arabs. In recent years he has been busy selling arms in Africa. One of his business partners was Meir Dagan, prior to being appointed head of the Mossad. By chance, news agencies and the American media announced the same day that Leib Kohn, a Jewish businessman from New York, had pleaded guilty in an American court of attempting to smuggle components for the Hawk surface-to-air missile to Israel. The prosecution alleged that the final destination of the components was Iran. The deal was allegedly to have taken place through two Israeli arms dealers, Eli Cohen and Avichai Weinstein, who for years have denied that they are selling arms to Iran. Cohen served a jail term in an American prison in 1995 for an attempt to sell arms to Iran, and on the basis of similar suspicions he and Weinstein have since been arrested and questioned three times in Israel. A number of days after the publication of the story, it was reported that the U.S. administration was furious about the sale to China [by Israel]of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) in the 1990s. A month ago, the government of France protested the continued arms sales from Israel to the Ivory Coast, which endangers French troops there. These four cases are a genuine reflection of the unbridled arms exports policy of the Defense Ministry, under the leadership of Yaron, Horev and Ben Hanan, which is based on the ambition to sell as much as possible, at any cost, and to any interested buyer. The result has been that in 2003 Israel's military sales abroad reached the $3 billion mark, about 10 percent of the overall arms trade in the world. These figures place Israel in fifth or sixth place on the list of the largest arms exporting countries in the world. The estimates of the Defense Ministry for 2004 are for revenues of $4 billion. This estimate does not take into account the serious damage the arms trade causes to Israel's image, with its affiliation with sinister regimes where human rights are crushed with brutality. The Defense Ministry has always had an extremely independent policy, which ignores the existence of the Foreign Ministry. As early as the 1950s, foreign minister Golda Meir complained that Shimon Peres, then director general at the Defense Ministry, had kept secret the initiatives carried out in France for acquiring military equipment and a nuclear reactor in exchange for the collusion resulting in the Sinai War. Since then, Defense Ministry officials, backed by the various defense ministers, have adopted an attitude that has permitted the secret sale of arms to the worst dictators. They did this with full knowledge that if the matter were to be revealed, it would be forgiven. The Foreign Ministry occasionally sought to moderate this attitude and became involved in the decision-making process. But in the past decade the relative apathy of the foreign ministers regarding the aggressive sales policy of the Defense Ministry has reached new heights. In practice there is nearly no oversight - neither by the government nor the Knesset - on the decisions of senior officials in the Defense Ministry. They enjoy the blind trust of Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, who has nearly no involvement in their calculations. Whoever tries to check this approach is marked by them as a "bleeding heart liberal," and he is told that if we do not sell, someone else will, and in any case, military exports provide jobs. It is no surprise that thousands retiring from the IDF, the General Security Service and the Mossad have become arms dealers in recent years, or security consultants. Naturally, this situation is fertile ground for diplomatic crises and embarrassments, like those of the past month."

Concerned that Israel may buckle to US pressure, Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Tang Jiaxuan flew to Israel this week to meet with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and ostentatiously invited him for a state visit to China. There is good reason for the US to be concerned over Israeli arms sales to China. China, with the second largest national economy in the world, an annual economic growth rate of eight percent, a seemingly insatiable and growing appetite for petroleum and rising global interests and influence is viewed by US policymakers in both parties as one of the central rising challenges to US global power ... "Coming on the heels of the December 2, 2004 British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) televised poll which revealed that nearly half of Britons had never heard of the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz, a Jewish organization in Florida has released a study demonstrating 63% of a typical United States city could not identify the infamous Polish concentration camp ... The BBC study immediately set off a frenzy of discussion in the international Jewish community and in response, the International Society for Sephardic Progress (ISFSP) conducted a survey in the form of a random sampling of the population of Orlando, Florida, where the ISFSP is based, between December 5 - 26, 2004. "We were stunned to learn the BBC study revealed 45% of people questioned had never heard of Auschwitz. The Orlando findings, 63%, are even more discouraging," stated Mr. Shelomo Alfassa, Executive Director of the ISFSP ... The final results showed that of the people questioned, only 36.6% of Orlando's population could identify what Auschwitz was, demonstrating 63.3% could not. Only 39.7% of men and 34% of women in Orlando could identify the infamous Polish concentration camp Auschwitz where over 1,000,000 Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazis. Other statistics show men were able to recognize Auschwitz 5.7% more than women could. Further, it illustrated that women between 21-30 are the group which were least able to state they knew what Auschwitz was. Upon issuing this study, Mr. Alfassa declared, "Holocaust education continues to be added to the curriculum of training programs for young students across the United States, however, as the years progress and as the survivors of the Holocaust are passing, many Holocaust programs increasingly are in jeopardy. Add to this the many revisionist websites which exist on the internet, the primary place where school children turn for information, and we surely will develop a generation which will be deficient in knowledge of the Holocaust. We must continue to make strides which will lend to making genocide and Holocaust education available to children of all backgrounds." "Welcome to the uneven nature of Jewish life at America’s prep schools. The student bodies of New England’s exclusive prep schools, once virtually devoid of Jews, today are 5 percent to 20 percent Jewish, with a higher percentage at some schools in the New York City area. Efforts to build Jewish identity at these schools are increasing, in part due to an organization known as the Curriculum Initiative, which was founded in 1996 expressly for this purpose and which now has relationships with about 50 U.S. private schools. Among its activities, the group organizes an annual Jewbilee weekend for Jewish prep schools. This year the event will be held at the end of January at Connecticut’s Choate Rosemary Hall, which, like many of the schools discussed in this article, has a mixture of boarding and day students. At some schools — like Choate and Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, each of which has at least 100 Jewish students — Jewish life is vibrant. At the Taft School, also in Connecticut, there’s even a Torah scroll originally from Uzbekistan, which the school bought ... Building Jewish identity also flies in the face of long-standing school traditions that either foster Protestantism or ignore religion altogether. Often founded as outposts of Protestant denominations, these institutions historically did not encourage Jewish identity and have been slow to change ... At some schools, however, times have changed. Perhaps nowhere is this more true than at the all-girls Westover School, and much of the credit is due to [Rachel] Bashevkin, a Jew who is the school’s assistant director of studies. During Chanukah this year, Jewish items adorn Bashevkin’s office. A green, blue and white needlepoint “Shalom” hangs on her office door, a clock with Hebrew letters sits on the small table near her computer and menorahs hang in both of her office windows, which look out onto the school courtyard. There are only about 15 Jewish students among the school’s population of 200, but the Jewish Club — the “Jew Crew,” as they call themselves — is an active presence. There’s an all-school seder and an annual Chanukah party, and the faculty does a yearly spiel, or humorous performance, for Purim ... When new students apply, Bashevkin has to do some checking to find out who’s Jewish, since the school doesn’t ask questions about religion on application forms. She then makes sure all the Jewish girls have places to go for the High Holidays. Since Bashevkin is active in the local Jewish community, Jewish parents feel comfortable sending their daughters to Westover. Two children of local Jewish federation staffers recently graduated from the school ... As students and Bashevkin do Israeli dancing to the band’s music, it could be a Chanukah celebration almost anywhere — except that most of the participants aren’t Jewish. That’s not surprising: Jewish activities at prep schools often have an ecumenical flavor. Indeed, student leaders of Choate’s Christian fellowship are regulars at the Hillel club’s meetings, which on Friday nights include Shabbat prayers in addition to discussions about “the world and whatever comes up,” says Abigail Tufts, 15, a sophomore at the Connecticut private school ... Junior Meg Kochiss, 17, says her experience at Westover has brought her closer to Judaism. The product of a mixed marriage, she’s now thinking of having a Bat Mitzvah."

"This winter break, 16-year-old Samantha Unger had a choice -- vacationing in a sunny destination or chilling in West Bloomfield. She chose to stay in West Bloomfield, again. She opted to attend the annual Michigan B'nai B'rith Youth Organization Regional Convention. Nothing, she said, compares to the week of sisterhood and bonding with other people of the Jewish faith. This week, she and her brother, 14-year-old Joey, are among nearly 400 students participating in the conference activities at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The convention, which began Sunday, continues through Thursday. It's a chance for about 20 high school BBYO chapters from metro Detroit to socialize, show off their talents, learn more about Judaism and hone leadership skills ..."I fell in love with it," said Nikki, a West Bloomfield resident and vice president of her BBYO chapter based in Farmington. She said the regional convention allows Jewish youth an opportunity to grow and connect with their Jewish heritage ... Boys and girls are separated for competition, but do have a chance to mingle -- though matchmaking isn't a stated desire of the event, said Arnold Weiner, senior executive director of the Michigan BBYO region. He did acknowledge nationwide efforts encouraging young Jewish people to marry within their faith. "Of course one of our goals is Jewish continuity," he said. A study in 2000 found the Jewish population nationally is shrinking. An estimated 100,000 Jews live in southeast Michigan."

Mounting scandal at AIPAC prompts talk of lobbying powerhouse's demise,

"With senior officials at America's top pro-Israel organization facing the specter of federal indictments, staffers at other groups are beginning to waver in their support and are warning that the mounting legal scandal could damage the political credibility of the entire Jewish community. The doubts were prompted by last week's FBI raid of the offices of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and by news that four of its top officials had been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury. In particular, the doubters said, the decision of a federal prosecutor to turn to a grand jury on a matter involving AIPAC was ominous and severely undermined the organization's claim that it was the victim of a few rogue investigators. Communal insiders warn that an indictment of an AIPAC official or a trial that casts the association in a negative light could severely weaken the lobbying prowess of all Jewish organizations at a time when Israel and Jewish agencies are facing rising hostility in many corners, and depending increasingly on support from Washington lawmakers. "If this goes to court, and I am not even talking about a guilty verdict, it will be very damaging to the community," said an official at one national Jewish organization. "If this goes to court, AIPAC as AIPAC will be on trial, and if AIPAC goes down, it's a disaster for the whole community." Jewish communal leaders are still publicly standing behind AIPAC and expressing full confidence in its integrity and innocence. But for the first time, some are quietly voicing doubts about the organization's blanket denials of wrongdoing. "It's okay to say once that the FBI is ticked at AIPAC, but a grand jury with subpoenas -- that's not someone running a grudge campaign," said an official with a major Jewish organization. "Clearly, somebody has thought this through. And they are looking for something."

"Anav Silverman remembers celebrating Hanukkah at her family's home in Calais, where theirs was the only menorah burning in the small city on the Canadian border. Now, living many borders away, the 19-year-old sees flickers from the branched candelabra in her neighbors' windows as she walks to get a bite of falafel or visit an Internet cafe. Silverman is living in Jerusalem, the city of her birth to which she returned in June to work and study. "I really love the city and the people," she said in a recent telephone interview. "I really feel like I belong here." The Calais High School graduate packed up in June and left home to work at the Temple Institute, a nonprofit organization in the Old City dedicated to rebuilding the Temple on Mount Moriah. "I just wanted to be part of this land," Silverman said. "I always felt a close connection to Israel." Silverman's father met and married her mother, an Israeli, on a visit to Jerusalem. Harold and Rachel Silverman had Anav and her sister before moving back to Calais to rear their family. Annual visits to Israel and Hebrew lessons from her mother fostered Silverman's interest in her home country, she said. She now follows in the path of young Israeli women recently graduated from school, who choose either to join the Israeli Army or sign up for one to two years of volunteer service. Silverman plans to stay at the institute for a year, then attend university near Tel Aviv to study communications and journalism, she said ... The history of the Temple Mount and its significance not only to Judaism but also to Islam and Christianity has been anything but peaceful. The site of the temple's proposed reconstruction is the same location as the Dome of the Rock, the site believed by Muslims to be where Mohammed ascended to heaven ... "Israel in general brings people from all over the world," she said. "I feel at home here."
