"The latest scandal, the resignation of New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey, is made up of the American holy trinity: money, sex, and politics. McGreevey's rivals have been charging for more than two years that he is using his political power to pay off his allies, supporters, and just plain friends. His confession to being a homosexual and having extramarital "consenting adult relations" shocked many of his citizens in New Jersey, in both form and substance - though not all. Internet discussion forums for months have seen anonymous hints as thick as the industrial smokestacks - when someone there wondered what made McGreevey take a particular position on single-sex marriages, someone wrote: Hint: Golan Cipel. The McGreevey-Cipel pair, they and their lawyers, are now caught in a dispute over the facts: was there a relationship, and if so, was it coerced; and did Golan try to blackmail Jim or did he just take the conventional step of naming a price (only 10 percent, $5 million, instead of $50 million) to cancel the threat of a suit over sexual harassment? Those are the romantic aspects that turned into the criminal, according to McGreevey, or the criminal without the romantic, according to Cipel. But they were preceded by an aspect that is a departure from the usual ups and downs of a male couple: the suspicion first launched at the governor in 2002 when he named Golan - who had neither ability nor the right citizenship - that he was exposing New Jersey to treason on behalf of Israel. In the imaginary clash between Israel and New Jersey, McGreevey's rivals charged, the governor's advisor on security affairs who makes $110,000 a year might be loyal to his own homeland - where he is counted among its reservists! - and not to his adopted state which is exposed to attacks. Maybe there are some who scoff at the idea of a war between New Jersey and Israel - which is often described as being "about the size of New Jersey" to give Americans an indication of Israel's size - but there should be no scoffing at how deep the feverish charges of dual loyalty of Israel and Jews can go."

"The Israeli man at the center of New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey's resignation over a gay affair said in an interview published Sunday that he is straight and had no idea at first that his boss is a homosexual. Golan Cipel told the Israeli daily newspaper Yediot Ahronot that McGreevey repeatedly made unwanted advances. Cipel said he informed the governor at one point that he planned to sue him for sexual harassment, and that lawyers were negotiating a settlement when McGreevey resigned last week ... McGreevey, who is married, announced his resignation Thursday, acknowledging that he is gay and had an affair with a man. Sources within the McGreevey administration named Cipel as the lover and said he had demanded millions of dollars to stay quiet. In a news conference Friday, Cipel's attorneys denied the claims, saying McGreevey's attorney had offered to pay if Cipel didn't file a lawsuit. Allen Lowy, one of Cipel's attorneys, did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press Sunday morning seeking comment. Sources in McGreevey's administration said Saturday that Cipel originally demanded $50 million but the figure dropped to $5 million as negotiations progressed. McGreevey appointed Cipel as New Jersey's $110,000-a-year homeland security adviser in 2002, without a background check or official announcement. The appointment drew criticism, and Cipel was reassigned a few months later and soon after left government ... "As the 10th anniversary of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach’s death nears, his family and followers are working on a tribute to the charismatic man whose guitar-strumming, story-telling and bear-hugging approach to Judaism inspired a worldwide spiritual outreach movement that continues to thrive. But the first international conference on his legacy may be tempered by past allegations — some dating back decades — that the pioneering rabbi harassed or abused women, although no such accusation was brought publicly while he was alive. The Awareness Center, a Baltimore-based advocacy group for Jewish victims of sexual abuse, has issued a “call to action” against efforts to rename an Upper West Side street Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach Way ...Amy Neustein, a sociologist who studies abuse in the Orthodox community, said until recently a perception of futility has kept such abuse victims from speaking out, as in the case of many religious communities. “They tend to hide their victimization because the community has hitherto been unresponsive to their plight,” said Neustein, who contacted The Jewish Week in response to an e-mail from the Awareness Center. “What they often do is sacrifice their victims on the altar of shame.” Allegations of impropriety by Rabbi Carlebach first became public four years after his death in a 1998 story in the feminist journal Lilith. The article claimed that he “sexually harassed or abused” women over the course of a Jewish outreach career spanning four decades. In the article, several women spoke of encounters with Rabbi Carlebach involving inappropriate contact or behavior. Others said they heard from other women about such experiences. According to Lilith, a group of Jewish women confronted the rabbi about his behavior in a private meeting in Berkeley, Calif., in the early 1980s and, after initially denying a problem, he declared, “Oy, this needs such a fixing,” said participants ... Vicki Polin, director of the Awareness Center in Baltimore, which is dedicated to addressing childhood sexual abuse in Jewish communities around the world, believes that renaming a street in honor of Rabbi Carlebach would be insensitive to those who have made allegations against him. “They also deserve to have a voice,” Polin said. “It would be very difficult for them to walk down a street and see that it was named after him.” Polin’s Web site features a page on Rabbi Carlebach’s history, including the Lilith article. "A British court is weighing the fate of a 27 year old man accused of strangling a gay rabbi and then dismembering the body. Andreas Hinz, who was nearing the completion of his studies to be a rabbi was murdered in July 2002. Hinz, who was brought up in Germany and never knew he was Jewish until he was an adult embraced Judaism and had moved to England to become a Liberal rabbi. He was open about his sexuality and often frequented gay clubs in London. The murder was discovered when workmen complained of a foul smell coming from a garbage bin. Inside the bin they found Hinz's head and limbs. A forensics search of his apartment revealed it had been scrubbed down with bleach in an effort to disguise the crime scene. Nevertheless trace amounts of Hinz's blood was found. Tracing Hinz's movements backwards on the night he was last scene led police to a gay bar where he was described leaving with a "somewhat unkempt rent boy type" identified as Thomas Hamilton McDowell. Under questioning McDowell admitted killing Hinz. McDowell has pleaded not guilty to murder. His lawyer is arguing that he reacted violently to an unwanted sexual advance. Prosecutor Michael Lawson, told the nine-woman, three-man jury trying the case that McDowell intended to murder and rob Hinz."

"Israeli and Russian police announced Tuesday that they had uncovered the largest network of white slave traders operating between the two nations in the past few years. The alleged leaders of the network were arrested - 10 people in all - in a joint police operation over the weekend. The investigation began a few months ago, when several suspects were arrested in Jerusalem on suspicion of smuggling women from the former Soviet Union into the country and employing them in escort services in the city. As the investigation proceeded, Jerusalem police inspectors managed to locate the alleged top white slave-trade criminal Shota Shmalashvili, also nicknamed "Tarzan," in Moscow. Shmalashvili, who was targeted by several police intelligence agencies worldwide, was apprehended on Friday. Police also arrested two of his alleged partners who operate in Israel. The two were arrested on suspicion of smuggling dozens of women across the Egyptian border over the past few years and selling them to escort services and brothels throughout the country, at a price of some $7,000 per woman."

Detectives smash massive ring trafficking in women,

"Police have arrested 40 suspected members of a Russian-Israeli prostitute smuggling ring in the last few days. The gang is believed to have brought hundreds of women into Israel in the past decade. The suspects allegedly took advantage of a lack of coordination between government offices and brought the women in under the Law of Return, establishing bogus family ties and claiming grants from the Absorption Ministry. Among the 40 is the alleged head of the organization, Genady Bosolovich, an Israeli resident. Police seized bank accounts, luxury cars, and cash valued at several million shekels. The investigation began several few months ago, starting with information the police interrogation division gathered about an international ring smuggling women to Israel as new immigrants. "We discovered a well-oiled forgery machine that created fictitious individuals and families, and a system that took advantage of the fact that Israel welcomes new immigrants," said Jerusalem District Police commander Major General Ilan Franko. Police believe members of the crime ring approached women in difficult circumstances in Russia and the Ukraine and offered work in Israel as strippers or prostitutes. They persuaded the women to establish fictitious Jewish families in their home country ... The women allegedly
signed contracts for two to four years, requiring them to work at brothels and pay the gang $36,000, as well as depositing the absorption allowances they received into the ring's bank account."

U.S. to finance Israeli shelter for victims of trafficking,

"The United States State Department told the Justice Ministry on Thursday that it has decided to finance a shelter for women victims of human trafficking in Israel, and would be forwarding an initial payment of $200,000. The U.S. has previously placed Israel in a group of nations in which human trafficking is a serious problem, but recently upgraded Israel's status to that of nations making an effort to improve the situation. The Justice Ministry says that the total American donation is likely to rise to
$5 million, which will cover the entire cost of setting up the shelter. Justice Ministry sources say they are fearful, however, that, given the donation from the U.S., the treasury will renege on its commitment to finance the maintenance of the shelter. Last month, the director general of the Justice Ministry, Aharon Avramovitz, ordered the Labor and Social Affairs Ministry to take responsibility for the establishment and maintenance of shelters for the victims of prostitute trafficking. The decision came despite claims by senior employees of the ministry that the Public Security Ministry should be handed the task. Avramovitz was appointed arbitrator in the case after a bitter argument between the two ministries. According to police sources, the lack of such shelters has not only interfered in their investigations, but is also an infringement of the women's rights. Officers often find it difficult to take testimony against pimps and traffickers under suspicion while the women who are to testify are usually held, if at all, under conditions close to arrest."

"A special Knesset committee finds that "3,000 women are sold each year in Israel's sex industry, in transactions with an annual volume of $1 billion." Exploitation of sex workers includes imprisonment, and other forms of rank coercion." The special Knesset committee's interim report is to be released Sunday. It describes the sex industry as a "modern form of slavery." The report's authors charge that current law enforcement efforts against pimps and sex worker traders are inadequate. The laws provide for jail terms of up to 16 years for trafficking in humans. The courts, however, have made a travesty of these laws, the report alleges. Its authors propose two new bills which would, they believe, send a clear message indicating that pimps who traffic in sex workers will not get light punishments. Testimony provided by sex workers and minors who appeared before the Knesset committee detailed the abusive, criminal aspects of trafficking. After the women are purchased, they have to "buy back" their freedom, and face constant threats, coercion and rape. Among other abuses, their passports are taken from them. A sex worker, the report reveals, has ten to fifteen clients a day, and earns NIS 120 from each client, with pimps taking a comparable sum for each client. Committee chairperson Zahave Gal-On, MK (Meretz) said the panel's two proposed bills are designed both to reduce abuses in Israel, and to ensure that Israel is removed from the U.S. State Department's list of the second worst group of trafficking offenders. In a July 2001 report, the State Department included Israel on a black list of states that fail to comply with the minimum criteria enforced by U.S. law to prevent human trafficking. Israel faced a threat of economic sanctions as a result of this ranking. Then, as a result of legislation promoted by the Knesset special committee, and by various public groups, Israel's listing on the State Department's 2002 report improved somewhat by being ranked among the second worst trafficking offenders. Members of this category do not comply with minimal criteria enforced by American law, yet have made "significant steps" to reduce trafficking abuses."

"Just what the NBA needs, another sex scandal: Donald Sterling, the miserly tycoon who owns the Los Angeles Clippers, testified last year that he regularly paid a Beverly Hills woman for sex, describing her as a $500-a-trick "freak" with whom he coupled "all over my building, in my bathroom, upstairs, in the corner, in the elevator." Sterling's graphic testimony--which came during a two-day pretrial deposition in connection with a lawsuit he filed against the woman, Alexandra Castro--will surely nettle basketball commissioner David Stern, who normally has to explain away the behavior of 20-something athletes, not married 70-year-old club owners worth nearly a billion. During a sworn January 2003 deposition, Sterling denied having a relationship with Castro, though he changed his testimony when questioned again last August. In often explicit detail, Sterling recounted three years of transactions with Castro, whom he met in mid-1999. While acknowledging that, "maybe I morally did something wrong," the Clippers owner was not shy when it came to describing hour-long sessions with Castro, whom Sterling credited with "sucking me all night long" and whose "best sex was better than words could express." Testifying that he was "quietly concealing it from the world," Sterling had a blunt appraisal of his "exciting" relationship with Castro: "It was purely sex for money, money for sex, sex for money, money for sex." Sterling's myriad legal battles tied to bottom-line business orientation,

"Donald Sterling, billionaire owner of the L.A. Clippers, Malibu Beach Club and hundreds of apartments throughout Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Koreatown, is embroiled in new litigation challenging his business practices. Hit on Feb. 6 with a $750,000 racial discrimination lawsuit, Sterling also has a date to go to court Feb. 24 over claims he committed fraud and breach of contract in the $3.5 million purchase of the land beneath Sterling Plaza, his 7-story art deco headquarters in Beverly Hills. Litigation is not new to Sterling, who last year settled claims brought by the city of Santa Monica that he harassed tenants to keep rents up in apartment complexes in that city. But the Sterling Plaza case is one of the only suits involving his commercial investments. Most of the suits -- and there are dozens filed in L.A. Superior Court -- involve tenant harassment complaints, the sort of litigation not uncommon for landlords of any size. Suits by tenants and vendors, said real estate executives, are just one of the risks associated with investing in apartment complexes, especially in Southern California. They say Sterling may be unfairly targeted because of his high profile and net worth, estimated at $1.4 billion ... Where Sterling stands out among real estate investors is in his focus on the operational aspects of his holdings -- following the age-old axiom to buy low and holds tight to his properties, all the while watching every dime ... But his penny-pinching style, well known among fans of the L.A. Clippers, has been at the crux of most of the real estate litigation filed against him. Numerous battles In 2001, the city of Santa Monica brought a case against Sterling based on allegations that he harassed eight tenants in three of his rent-controlled buildings by threatening to evict them for having potted plants on their balconies. Sterling ended up paying $25,000 to settle the case. Earlier this month, he filed an eviction notice against a family in a rent-controlled apartment complex on 1021 Lincoln Blvd., claiming one of the family members had torn down notices in the elevator. The tenant has filed an answer to the eviction notice, according Denise McGranahan, staff attorney at Legal Foundation of Los Angeles. "I've never seen someone evicted for this reason in my life," she said. "And I've been doing this work since 1993." On Feb. 6, the Housing Rights Center, a tenant rights non-profit organization representing six tenants, sued Sterling for discriminating against blacks, Hispanics and the disabled at two apartment complexes. The suit claims Sterling visited Mark Wilshire Towers at 691 Irolo St. in May 2002 to tell his staff to rent apartments only to Koreans, not blacks or Hispanics. He also changed the name of the complex to Korean World Towers and fired the non-Korean staff. Gary Rhoades, litigation director and lead counsel in the case for the Housing Rights Center, said he has evidence Sterling's behavior is a "widespread problem" and more blatant than in other discrimination cases. "There are direct statements made by the defendants, and their advertising shows a preference for a certain type of tenant based on race or national origin, Rhoades said. "We rarely have that in discrimination cases."

"Lawyers for film director Roman Polanski urged England's highest court on Wednesday to allow him to sue for libel via video link in order to avoid the risk of being extradited to the United States for child sex offences. In a case seen as a test of the rights of libel claimants to avoid having to appear in court to give evidence, his lawyer argued that the celebrated director's criminal record should not prevent him pursuing a civil case in Britain. Polanski, 71, who lives in Paris, wants to sue U.S. magazine Vanity Fair for defamation. The Court of Appeal ruled last year that Polanski should not be allowed to give evidence via video link from Paris since this would be allowing him to use judicial process when it suits him, but avoid it when it does not ... Polanski, who fled America in 1977 after admitting having sex with a child, wants to sue the magazine over an article he says defamed him by accusing him of seducing a woman who was with another man. According to the article, the Franco-Polish, Oscar-winning director propositioned the woman in a New York restaurant when he stopped there on the way to the funeral of his actress wife, Sharon Tate, who was murdered in 1969. He is seeking to use the English courts for the libel action -- which Vanity Fair's publishers Conde Nast are contesting -- but is scared to come to Britain for fear of being extradited to the United States as a "fugitive from justice." Polanski pleaded guilty in a California court 27 years ago to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl but before sentence was handed down he fled the United States and has not returned since. Since Britain has an extradition agreement with the United States, Polanski risks arrest and extradition were he to set foot on English soil. Media law experts say Polanski chose to use the English justice system because its libel laws are more advantageous to litigants than those in the United States."

"Comedian Bill Maher was slapped yesterday with a $9 million palimony suit by an ex-girlfriend who alleges that the HBO star subjected her to physical and verbal abuse, including "insulting, humiliating and degrading racial comments." In the below Los Angeles Superior Court complaint, Nancy Johnson, a centerfold model and former flight attendant also known as Coco Johnsen, alleges that Maher, 48, reneged on promises to pay her expenses and purchase a Beverly Hills home. Johnson, who says she dated Maher for 17 months before splitting from him in May, also contends that the performer promised to marry her and have children. Johnson, pictured at right, does not detail the degrading racial comments allegedly made by Maher, and recounts only one episode of supposed physical abuse by the host of HBO's "Real Time." She charges that Maher pulled her arm and shook her at one party, causing "injuries to her back and neck," and later that evening warned he'd hit her on the head with a hammer if she was unfaithful."

Con man turned rabbi returns to Cleveland,

"For years, Neal Borovitz winced and reached for his wallet whenever someone brought up his younger brother. "How much?" he asked. His brother -- check-kiter, con man and drunk -- estimates he stole somewhere between $75,000 and $100,000. So many people around Cleveland fell for Mark Borovitz's cons that he was forced to flee the city in 1977 when a couple of hoodlums put out a $10,000 contract on his life. This week, the brothers returned to their hometown to join nearly 3,000 delegates to the general assembly of the United Jewish Communities. Today, both men are rabbis. And Mark Borovitz quickly ran out of business cards. Those cards identify him as spiritual leader of Congregation Beit T'Shuvah in Los Angeles. The name means "The Return." Borovitz, 16 years sober, is rabbi to the nation's only Jewish rehab center, a 120-bed facility designed to help Jews overcome addictions of every stripe. It is a favorite faith-based initiative of President Bush. "He and I share that we're both old drunks," Mark Borovitz said as he spooned up chicken soup Tuesday at Abba's, a South Euclid kosher restaurant. "God opened our hearts so we could change our behaviors. We exchange e-mails and notes. It's a trip." Borovitz paused, grinning at the unlikelihood of a two-time felon consulting with the leader of the free world. The rabbi, 53, went almost 15 years without prayer. The breaking point came when he was 22, consorting with local mobsters and carrying a gun. A leader of B'Nai Jeshurun, his family's congregation, barred Borovitz from entering on Yom Kippur. Borovitz was uncertain if he was rejected because of his unsavory reputation or because his family could not afford High Holy Day tickets. Borovitz describes the incident on pages 48-49 of his new book, "The Holy Thief," subtitled, "A Con Man's Journey from Darkness to Light' ... . He graduated in 1969 and opened a casino in his dorm room that fall at Ohio State. Borovitz quickly became bored with college, but he loved separating marks from their money. Even now, he is gleeful about some of the cons he pulled. "I know how terrible it was, and I'm worried about how this will look in print, but some of the deals were fun," said Borovitz ... It was hard enough for his Beachwood mother to read about her son selling illegal porn videos and visiting prostitutes ... "A bilateral agreement between Moldova and Israel aimed at halting trafficking in women is in the preliminary stages, Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin disclosed on Monday at a reception at Beit Hanassi. Of the more than a thousand foreign prostitutes arrested in Israel over the past year, the overwhelming majority come from the former Soviet Union and of these a very large percentage come from Moldova. Many – brought to Israel under false pretenses and forced into prostitution – had their documents confiscated by their pimps or other criminal elements, thus making deportation difficult once they were apprehended by police. Voronin said that his people were in touch with the relevant authorities in Israel, "and we hope to bring an end to this insidious problem."

Sgro argues stripper shortage

"Contrary to Immigration Department claims, there is no shortage of native-borne exotic dancers in Canada, says a University of Toronto law professor who has studied the strip club business. Audrey Macklin says the real reason strip clubs want foreign dancers is that they are desperate and will do things Canadian women consider too unsafe or demeaning. "What in fact the demand is for these days is for women to lap dance, and not just lap dance but basically to be on some guy's lap naked while he gropes her and may masturbate under her and that sort of stuff," Macklin said in an interview Thursday. "And there's also a shortage of women who are willing to work in so-called private booths where they do stripping, whatever they do in a private booth, just for one man." Such activities may be illegal "but the fact is that's what makes money for the strip clubs, that's what they want women to do, so that means they don't really work very hard to protect the women from being groped or abused." Macklin was commenting on the federal program for exotic dancers, which has come under scrutiny since Immigration Minister Judy Sgro granted permanent resident status to a Romanian dancer who worked on her campaign. Sgro conceded Thursday that the foreign dancers "are ripe for exploitation," but insisted the program doesn't condone prostitution. She said she wants to tighten the rules for their work in Canada, but not to prevent them from coming. "When you talk to the women that are so desperate to find a way out of countries they say, 'Please, keep this program because it does provide us with an opportunity . . . a chance of a better life,"' she said after a cabinet meeting. Last year more than 500 Romanians received temporary visas to come to Canada under the program. The foreign dancers are often trained in other occupations such as nursing and teaching. "There's a tendency to depict these women as sluts and whores and prostitutes and say, 'Why are we letting them in at all?' " said Macklin. "Well, a lot of them are in fact trained in other occupations but we claim not to need those occupations. "A lot of them actually have university education but this is where the demand is and this is what the visas will be issued for. On the one hand, we don't acknowledge the skills they have and then when they enter using the only way they have, we disparage them." Toronto lawyer Mendel Green, who formerly represented an association of strip-club owners called the Adult Entertainment Association, denied there's an adequate supply of Canadian dancers. When he represented the industry, club owners lobbied to bring in foreign dancers because Canadian-born dancers were controlled by biker gangs, said Green. "I do know there has always been a shortage of women that want to work in these clubs. They're a critical sort of product in the entertainment industry that is not readily available in Canada. It's got nothing to do with prostitution at all. "I'm not saying some of them aren't prostitutes, but I'm saying the overwhelming majority of them go home when they're supposed to go home, they're treated very carefully and well."

"Holy smokes! "Nuns" coming here from Ukraine have a dirty habit of taking it all off in Toronto-area girlie bars, immigration officials warn. Nightclub insiders say Canada has shut its doors to foreign strippers and women are finding clever ways of getting here, including posing as nannies, babysitters or even clergy. Canadian embassy officials in Kiev have told immigration authorities here there's a new trend of strippers posing as nuns to get around tough rules to travel here to work. In a confidential document, Kiev embassy staffer Marlene Massey said officers refused visas to a group of "nuns" travelling to Canada because they were exotic dancers in disguise. 'MAY HAVE MISSED OTHERS' "We refused them," Massey said. "We may have missed some others." Federal immigration spokesman Peter Lamey said legitimate nuns don't require work permits. "We have a different approach for processing nuns or anyone in the clergy," Lamey said. "They are exempted under the Immigration Act." He said there are no checks conducted to determine if the "nuns" actually work in a church upon arrival. "Our officers are pretty observant," Lamey said. "They watch out for a lot of things abroad." However, officials of the Adult Entertainment Association of Canada said the flow of foreign strippers has been closed off and those women are using innovative ways to get here. 'BIG DEMAND' HERE "The money is here and dancers will always find ways to get here," said association president Sorin Cohn. "There's a big demand for dancers in Canada." Ottawa has almost stopped foreign dancers from coming here to work by imposing tough restrictions, which means women must have a portfolio and prove they're dancers. "Dancers create jobs and make a contribution to Canadian society," Cohn said. "Sure, you will find one or two bad apples in the bunch." He said Ontario strip clubs could use at least 1,000 more strippers to meet the demand. Most of the dancers are brought in from Russia, Hungary, Ukraine and Central and South America. Many are promised modelling jobs but end up stripping."

"Former porn king - Al Goldstein - has been arrested allegedly for shoplifting three books from the Barnes and Noble book store. Goldstein is the ex-publisher of Screw Magazine. He was stopped by security at the Barnes and Noble store near Lincoln Center yesterday with three books on health. New York City Police were called and he was charged with petty larceny. Goldstein has been on a downward spiral since his publishing company went bankrupt. He has been living at the Bellevue homeless shelter."
