"A 62-year-old Haifa man was charged yesterday with physically and mentally abusing his children and wife for many years. He is also suspected of raping two of his daughters ... In 1984, the indictment says, he married a woman who had two daughters, aged 12 and 8. He is accused of raping his elder stepdaughter for the first time when she was 17 and then throwing her out of the house naked. He continued raping her until she turned 21, threatening to tell that she was sleeping with him if she resisted. He stopped raping and abusing her only when she married, at the age of 23. He started raping his younger stepdaughter when she was 15, in addition to beating her and screaming at her. He is alleged to have raped her several times more between 1991 and 1993. When she joined the army, he humiliated her and threw her out. She never returned to the family home. The man is also charged with beating his wife in 2000 so badly that she required medical treatment. In addition, he abused his wife for years with humiliating acts and insults at every opportunity. The couple had three more daughters, born in 1986, 1987 and 1990. The man is also charged with abusing the young girls. He used to scream at the older one and insult her until she started getting anxiety attacks. He insisted on watching her dress against her will and stroke her behind against her explicit wishes. He used to masturbate in front of the second daughter and abuse her in similar ways, and is also suspected of brutally beating the youngest child."

The advent of new technologies, first the VCR and now DVD and the internet, has turned porn from the near-exclusive domain of the cliched trench-coated pervert to an industry with a net worth in the US alone estimated at $US10 billion ($16.8 billion). In 2001, it was reckoned that Americans spent $US4 billion on renting and buying adult videos and DVDs and about $US2 billion downloading porn from one of the web's 100,000 sex-themed sites. 'Twenty years ago, you had people sneaking into those little theatres,' says Bill Asher, president of Vivid Entertainment, the biggest of the porno companies in the Valley. 'That's all changed with technology. We've gone from a market of hundreds of thousands to hundreds of millions.' With 11,000 new US titles being produced each year, almost all of them in the Valley, it is not difficult to understand why the 916 sq km of tract homes, freeways, shopping malls and fast food outlets on the wrong side of the Hollywood Hills is fast becoming known as 'pornoville'. "That's what everybody calls it already," a female performer named Dee told a reporter while waiting for the resumption of her scene in a video shoot ... Pornography's new-found legitimacy was never more evident than when the prestigious University of Southern California business school invited Steven Hirsch, Vivid Entertainment's founder, to address students from the same podium previously occupied by such captains of industry as Microsoft founder Bill Gates and former Chrysler chairman Lee Iaccoca. Hirsch spoke of 'market share' and 'production values' but never once mentioned the 'p'-word, pornography. Instead, he spoke of "content", as if he were the head of a major Hollywood movie studio, or, for that matter, any mainstream business. 'Ten years ago, I don't think I would have been asked to speak in front of that class,' says Hirsch, whose father became a distributor of pornography after losing his job as a stockbroker in Ohio in the early '70s. 'We're already past the acceptance stage. At this point we're just talking about a business as a business. We're nothing more than widget makers' ... Anne Marie Ballowe, who starred in adult movies for seven years until leaving the business four years ago, contracted chlamydia, cytomegalovirus, which could make her blind, hepatitis C, which has devastated her liver and HIV from fellow performers. Unable to pay her medical bills, she is suing two major porn companies as well as fellow performer Marc Goldberg, whom she claims falsified an HIV negative report. Ballowe and others have claimed that performers regularly falsify medical clearances to get work, while producers turned a blind eye to the problem and, worse, routinely offer women bonuses if they agree to have unprotected sex."

Bnei Brak resident gets nine years for sexual abuse,

"Tel Aviv District Court on Wednesday sentenced a 29-year-old Bnei Brak resident to nine years in prison and two years' probation for sexually harassing and assaulting six ultra-Orthodox youths between the ages of 14 and 16 over a period of years. Avraham Asher was also accused of 'offering' one of the youths to two of his friends, who also abused him. The two, Yossi Mozas and Yosef Garus, both 29, from Bnei Brak, were given much lighter sentences ... The court heard that Asher and his friends harassed the youths in bus shelters and at ritual baths in Bnei Brak. Asher also assaulted the youths in showers and once visited a yeshiva in Jerusalem, where one of the teenagers studied."

"With his Mickey Mouse lapel pin replete with an American flag, prosecutor Ira Karmelin cut a squeaky-clean image in the Palm Beach County Courthouse. But on Tuesday the image was of the top assistant state attorney handcuffed outside the courthouse and carted off to jail to face child sex charges. Karmelin, 38, is accused of soliciting a woman, whom he believed was a 13-year-old girl, on the Internet and performing lewd acts in front of her via a camera attached to his computer. The prosecutor -- who also is a former sheriff's deputy -- is charged with two third-degree felonies, each punishable by up to five years in prison. He is the first prosecutor under Palm Beach County State Attorney Barry Krischer arrested on a felony charge. He was suspended without pay indefinitely and could lose his law license ... Karmelin talked openly about his wish to become a judge. Many of his colleagues, as well as defense attorneys, described Karmelin as Krischer's favorite bulldog prosecutor. Just last week, Krischer recommended Karmelin to be an assistant attorney general ... Orange County Sheriff's Office Detective Tom Harrison, who came to West Palm Beach to make the arrest, discovered Karmelin was a prosecutor when making background checks on the screen name. 'When I learned that he was in fact an assistant state attorney, after picking my chin off the floor and restarting my heart... I knew he was not above anybody else,' Harrison said."

"Nineteen critics of convicted sex offender and former Orthodox Union youth leader Rabbi Baruch Lanner have signed a letter excoriating a respected rabbi, saying that he withheld for more than a decade a 1989 rabbinical court ruling that found Lanner guilty of abuse. The January 24 letter accuses Rabbi Mordechai Willig, a highly regarded spiritual leader at Yeshiva University's rabbinical seminary, of sharing the rabbinical court's findings against Lanner only with select individuals who apparently 'did nothing to remove him from children.' It also accuses Willig of pressuring one of Lanner's accusers, Elie Hiller, to write a letter of apology. According to the letter, Willig, who in 1989 led the New Jersey-based rabbinical court, or beit din, fed the public perception that Lanner was innocent while Lanner continued to have contact with children. Signed mostly by alleged Lanner victims and their families, the letter comes after a meeting earlier this month in which attendees say Willig stated, for perhaps the first time in so public a forum, that Lanner was found guilty of some of the charges brought against him in 1989. 'Rabbi Willig prioritized the reputation of a rabbinic colleague a colleague who he knew was abusing kids ahead of the safety of children,' says the letter ... And in a separate development, famed Harvard University law professor Alan Dershowitz has been serving as a consultant to Lanner's defense team, according to Dershowitz's brother Nathan. Nathan Dershowitz is one of Lanner's full-time attorneys. Lanner is appealing his July conviction that he sexually abused two teenage girls while he was their principal during the 1990s at Hillel Yeshiva high school in Ocean Township, N.J. ... A report prepared in 2000 by a special commission appointed to investigate the O.U.'s role in the Lanner affair stated that Lanner sexually abused women and teenage girls and physically abused boys and girls while he was a leader for decades at the O.U.'s National Conference of Synagogue Youth. The report also cited the failure of members of the O.U. and NCSY leadership to take effective action, allowing Lanner's conduct to 'continue unchecked for many years.'"

"During his 30-year career, Sidney I. Goldenberg taught math in the New York schools, served as cantor at two synagogues on Long Island and became the rabbi of a Jewish congregation in California. He was a respected teacher, a man of learning -- and a child molester. Before he was convicted and sent to prison in 1997 for sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl during bat mitzvah lessons, there had been numerous complaints against him. But each time allegations arose, he moved to a new community, leaving a trail of whispers and shattered lives. Prosecutors, alleged victims and their families say Goldenberg was able to move from job to job because of a wall of silence and shame around sexual abuse in the Jewish community -- a wall that some believe is finally coming down, thanks to the scandal over sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests. 'In the past it was covered up, just like in the Catholic Church,' said Vicki Polin, an art therapist in Baltimore who is forming an association of Jewish survivors of childhood sexual abuse. 'Survivors' stories were discounted. They were told they were lying. Their parents would go to the proper authorities within the Jewish community and nothing was done' ...'I don't think pedophilia has a religion,' said Na'ama Yehuda, a speech pathologist in New York who is co-founder, with Polin, of the Awareness Center, an organization for Jewish survivors of childhood trauma. The center's Web site (www.theawarenesscenter.org) lists more than 30 Jewish officials who have been accused of child sexual abuse. They include the late Shlomo Carlebach, a renowned Hasidic rabbi; Baruch Lanner, an Orthodox rabbi who was convicted last year of molesting two teenage girls; and Jerrold Levy, a Reform rabbi imprisoned for sex crimes involving teenage boys ... 'In the Catholic Church, the issue was the cover-up by the church hierarchy. Here, it's the community, not the hierarchy. It's the whole community not wanting to admit trouble in our midst,' said Yosef Blau, an Orthodox rabbi at New York's Yeshiva University who counsels victims of sexual abuse."

"David Schwartz, a counselor for preschool boys at an Orthodox music and arts camp, was sentenced to one year in residential treatment and five years’ probation for molesting a 4-year-old boy in his care at summer camp. A six-year prison sentence was suspended. The Jan. 21 sentencing at the Airport Courthouse came after Schwartz, the 36-year-old father of young children, accepted a plea bargain in which he pleaded no contest to one felony count of committing lewd acts with a child. (A plea of no contest in a criminal court is the equivalent of guilty, but if victims decide to sue Schwartz, they cannot use the criminal plea against him, according to the district attorney’s office.) Schwartz will have to register as a sex offender for life, undergo at least two years of sex offender therapy and is prohibited from being alone with minor children, including his own, for the period of probation ... While all the boys in the group told stories that indicated they had been molested and tormented, only two were able to tell their stories coherently and consistently enough to be considered admissible in court. Three parents spoke with The Jewish Journal, telling of the long-lasting pain Schwartz has inflicted on their families. Parents said their children spoke of being touched and hurt, and watching Schwartz make 'white pee-pee.' Testimony and physical evidence on at least one boy indicated that he was sodomized. Schwartz is alleged to have brought a bird into class and cut off its head in front of the children, telling them that if they told anyone about what happened, he would do the same to them and their parents... When Schwartz was first arrested, many in the Orthodox community — those who knew him and those who didn’t — asserted the innocence of Schwartz, who was a counselor at Camp Ruach for two years and taught middle school social studies at Yeshivat Yavneh in Hancock Park. Several rabbis who knew him privately expressed disbelief that he could have perpetrated such acts. At a hearing soon after his arrest, at which his bail was reduced from $1 million to $300,000, Schwartz’s supporters heckled the parents of the victims, accusing them of harming another Jew. But as details of the boys’ stories came out, support waned."

So, to demonstrate that there's nothing wrong or taboo about the female anatomy, Sprinkle propped herself up on a table, stuck a metal speculum in her vagina just as a gynecologist would, and welcomed the class members to come over and take a look. In fact, thousands of people saw her 'Public Cervix Announcement' as part of her performance piece 'Post-Porn Modernist,' which she staged throughout the country, in 14 European countries and in Australia' ... For a while, Sprinkle became so curious and adventurous that 'a lot of porn directors wouldn't work with me because they thought I was too kinky,' she says. Urination (also known as a 'golden shower') became Sprinkle's signature act because, she believes, it resonated so well with her name ... Sprinkle is also on the college lecture circuit, appearing at universities such as Vassar, Brown and Columbia. By the early '90s, Sprinkle had lost interest in commercial pornography and moved on to performance art. New Age spirituality soon joined the mix. In her shows, she 'used sex to inspire thought as well as a sense of connection with the Divine,' she says. "It's a very good question. Why me? And why now? Those are two questions that come to my mind. Why me? I'm high profile. I released a movie with a scene that depicts women inserting their hands inside of one another. This particular scene is different, in a sense, from other scenes that have been released here in the United States for quite some time, in the sense that a thumb is involved in the process, as opposed to fingers. In other words, for the last 10 years, movies have been shot where multiple digits have been inserted into women and/or men in gay movies. But for some reason, when you put a thumb in, it is called fisting. And that seems to be a problem with the L.A. city attorney. Why? I don't know. The line is drawn. How do you know where the line is? It really is a guessing game. When I first came into this business, I was told there were certain things that I couldn't shoot. I couldn't shoot child pornography, bestiality, rape scenarios, snuff films or simulated snuff films, urination, defecation, and fisting. This is back in early 1991. This was just a kind of myth perpetuated through the industry ... My movies are a chronology of my life, and therefore I can't really control how many scenes are in what movie. In addition, I've expanded the format to two hours and 20 minutes. So I've always been somewhat of a rule-breaker ... As a matter of fact, I got a message on my machine before I came here at my office from a woman in Nevada. She basically said that she's a member of NOW. And she said, 'God bless you for fighting this.' She said the thing that really bothered her and her friends is that it seemed to her that this was an anti-woman point of view that the city is having, because if the city understood how essential and important the act of fisting is in the lesbian community or the gay community ... they wouldn't be discussing this. ... Why should making a film on fisting be so important that you might put yourself in jail, or get yourself fined? Women, especially lesbian women, find this a very important subject. They write to me; they let me know... How did Howard Stern show get popular? Yes, everybody's tuning in, wondering what the hell he's going to say next. Sure. But you don't think that they're really waiting to see the porn star that's coming on, and who's getting naked? That's what they're waiting for. That's the popularity of Howard Stern -- dirty words and dirty girls ... And the movie is really again like all the other movies, a chronology of my life. I hold the camera. It's all seen through my eye, which is called 'shooting point of view.' It's all basically narrated by me. It's my experiences, or our experiences, mine and Alicia's down in Tampa. Gary Goldberg, ACGA’s ex-president and CEO, probably should have learned from their example. In February 2001, Goldberg was sentenced to five years probation for obtaining child pornography by mail. 'When the FBI and police knocked on his door, it was the end of Gary Goldberg, chief executive of the American Corn Growers Association,' The Tulsa World reported. 'Now and forever, it’s Gary Goldberg, convicted sex offender.' Goldberg, who once rubbed elbows with senators and even visited President Clinton in the White House, now says: 'I’m a felon. They don’t let felons in the Oval Office.' Goldberg’s crime led to a very public resignation from his high-profile ACGA role. But the organization did not divorce itself of Goldberg entirely: he now serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the ACGA-linked American Corn Growers Foundation, where he remains in charge of fundraising and glad-handing the big-money foundations that keep ACGA afloat. Goldberg, a Tulsa corn grower, served as CEO of ACGA for three years and National President for five. A New York City native, he obtained both a B.A. and a M.S. degree in psychology, and became a corn, popcorn and soybean farmer in Nebraska. An ex-children’s soccer coach, Goldberg has also served as chairman of a Nebraska children’s museum."

"A prominent rabbi was arrested yesterday on charges of trying to pick up a 13-year-old girl in an Internet chat room. Israel Kestenbaum, 54 - who works for the New York Board of Rabbis - is accused of multiple counts of attempted child endangerment and attempted dissemination of indecent materials to a minor. Kestenbaum, of Highland Park, N.J., was arrested at work after a monthlong probe, during which police say he solicited the girl for sex. But the 'girl' was really an NYPD undercover detective, cops said. Kestenbaum allegedly arranged to meet the teenager on Sunday at a Starbucks at the corner of Dey Street and Broadway downtown. She didn't show up, of course, but police sources say cops have video of the rabbi looking for her. After his arrest, police sources said, Kestenbaum indignantly challenged cops, saying, 'Don't you know who I am and who I know?' Police said they confiscated Kestenbaum's computer. His career involves helping Jewish people who are infirm and homebound, and he has contributed to books on the topic ... The Board of Rabbis named Kestenbaum one of its 'Rabbis of the Year' for helping people in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks."

"Twenty-five years ago, Oscar-nominated director Roman Polanski fled to France to avoid a prison sentence after pleading guilty to a sexual assault charge. Now his victim says she wants his work to be judged on its merits, not on his crime. She's in her late 30s now. Samantha Geimer said Polanski fled the country after a Los Angeles County judge refused to accept a plea bargain arranged by attorneys for both sides. Geimer writes that she doesn't have any hard feelings or sympathy toward Polanski, who drugged and coerced her into sex when she was 13 years old. Geimer says that she hopes 'he and his film' are 'honored according to the quality of the work.' Geimer said Polanski's legal troubles should have nothing to do with it ... Polanski pleaded guilty in 1977 to a charge of unlawful sex, but fled the country the next year while on bail ... In 1999, responding to persistent rumors that he was railroaded by zealous prosecutors, Polanski told Esquire: 'There was no plot against me. There was no set-up. It was all my fault. I think my wrongdoing was far greater than Bill Clinton's.' Polanski is nominated for best director for his film 'The Pianist.'"

"It's been 26 years since Roman Polanski's arrest for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl, but the director's Oscar nomination and the success of his film 'The Pianist' has again focused attention on the March 1977 crime that prompted his French exile. Polanski, 69, will not discuss the case and his victim, Samantha Geimer, now 39, has recently said that the sex assault should not color his chances with Academy Award voters. But that, of course, does not lessen the severity of the crime, which is graphically detailed in the following grand jury testimony, which was quietly unsealed four months ago by L.A. Superior Court Judge David Wesley. Two weeks after Polanski plied her with Champagne and a Quaalude, Samantha Gailey appeared before an L.A. grand jury and recalled Polanski's predatory behavior in a Mulholland Canyon home owned by Jack Nicholson. The teenager's troubling--and contemporaneous--account of her abuse at Polanski's hands begins with her posing twice for topless photos that the director said were for French Vogue. The girl then told prosecutors how Polanski directed her to, 'Take off your underwear' and enter the Jacuzzi, where he photographed her naked. Soon, the director, who was then 43, joined her in the hot tub. He also wasn't wearing any clothes and, according to Gailey's testimony, wrapped his hands around the child's waist. The girl testified that she left the Jacuzzi and entered a bedroom in Nicholson's home, where Polanski sat down beside her and kissed the teen, despite her demands that he 'keep away.' According to Gailey, Polanski then performed a sex act on her and later 'started to have intercourse with me.' At one point, according to Gailey's testimony, Polanski asked the 13-year-old if she was 'on the pill,' and 'When did you last have your period?' Polanski then asked her, Gailey recalled, 'Would you want me to go in through your back?' before he 'put his penis in my butt.' Asked why she did not more forcefully resist Polanski, the teenager told Deputy D.A. Roger Gunson, 'Because I was afraid of him.' Following his indictment on various sex charges, Polanski agreed to a plea deal that spared him prison time (he had spent about 45 days in jail during a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation). But when it seemed that a Superior Court judge might not honor the deal--and sentence Polanski to prison--the director fled the country. "After a five-hour drive over the Egyptian desert, Inna crawled through a tunnel under a border fence, brushed sand off her pants and waited with seven other women to be taken to their new jobs. Running from poverty in her homeland of Moldova, Inna had come to the Holy Land to enter a profession as old as the Bible — prostitution. A $1 billion-a-year sex trade, reputedly one of the biggest of its kind in the world, has sprung up in Israel over the past decade. Every year, hundreds of women from eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are smuggled into Israel. The trafficking is linked to the Russian mafia taking root in Israel as a byproduct of mass immigration from the former Soviet Union. Many of the women are spirited in across Israel's border with Egypt, which runs along 200 miles of desert that is difficult to guard against smuggling. The sex trade is so brisk that Israeli police set up a task force a year ago to deal with human trafficking. 'This is seriously like slavery,' said Chief Supt. Avi Davidovitch, head of the task force. Offenders get off too lightly, a parliamentary committee says. Courts routinely sentence pimps to community service or short prison terms, the panel said in a report late last year. It called for minimum jail terms of 16 years. Often, the women are mistreated, held as virtual prisoners and beaten by pimps, said Ephraim Ehrlich, an intelligence chief in the police Immigration Bureau. 'The people who work in this field have no conscience. All they care about is money,' Ehrlich said. 'These girls are really the victims' ... During her six months in Israel, Inna said, she was able to send $3,500 to her mother and sister back in their Moldovan village. That's a small fortune in her poverty-stricken homeland, where she hopes to build a house and learn to be a hairdresser. 'After everything I saw here, I don't ever want to come back,' she said. Asked why she came, Inna said she was unemployed in Moldova and had come to Israel voluntarily after hearing of women making money as prostitutes. 'I wanted to do the same thing,' she said, hooking purple-clad, thin legs behind her chair. 'But it's too difficult to work with 10 to 15 men a day,' she added, averting her large brown eyes ... Inna said she did not know how much her pimp paid for her — although the price can range from $3,000 to $10,000. She said for the first month, she was paid only $4 per customer because she had to pay off her debt to the pimp. At a police station in Rehovot, south of Tel Aviv, two other Moldovan women talked tearfully with reporters about their lives as prostitutes. One, identified only as Marina, a slightly built 21-year-old, buried her face in her hands when she revealed that two days earlier she had learned she was pregnant."

Temple suspends accused cantor,

"Robert Shapiro was suspended from his duties as hazzan, or cantor, at Temple Beth Am shortly after allegations of sexual assault were raised, an official of the congregation said yesterday. Shapiro, 69, was instructed not to enter the North Main Street synagogue or officiate at religious services, said Mark Itzkowitz, the temple’s general counsel and a member of its board of directors. Shapiro, the temple’s hazzan for a quarter-century, pleaded innocent Friday to three counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault and battery on a mentally retarded woman. He was ordered to stay away from the alleged victim and her family, and the Tower Hill Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Canton. The incidents allegedly took place during the past year at the nursing home and temple, said lawyer Bruce Namenson of Quincy, who represents the alleged victim. Itzkowitz said temple officials first learned of the allegations Feb. 7, when the victim’s family met with Rabbi Loel Weiss, the congregation’s spiritual leader. Within an hour of that meeting, police were contacted, a criminal investigation was started and Shapiro was suspended with pay, Itzkowitz said'... Itzkowitz said Shapiro was ‘beloved by the community.’"

L.A. program offers help after arrest of rabbi for pedophilia,

"In the wake of the arrest last week of Rabbi Israel Kestenbaum in a police Internet sex sting operation, the director of a Los Angeles-based residential treatment program for Jews with addictive and behavioral disorders believes a similar program is needed here and has offered to assist. 'If we can share what we have learned in our 16 years of existence, we would be glad to help,' said Harriet Rossetto, director of Beit T’Shuvah, believed to be the country’s only residential program for Jewish adults. Rossetto said three of the 110 Jews in her program are rabbis there for sexual addiction. She is convinced that their cases, as well as the arrests in recent years of rabbis accused of sex crimes, are 'just the tip of the iceberg' ... The call for a treatment program for rabbis comes after a string of much-publicized cases involving Jewish clergy charged with sexual abuse of minors. They include Rabbi Baruch Lanner, who last June was sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually abusing two girls when he was principal of a New Jersey yeshiva in the 1990s. Rabbi Lanner is free pending an appeal. Also, Cantor Howard Nevison of Temple Emanu-el in Manhattan was charged last spring with sexually abusing his young nephew. That trial has not begun. Rabbi Kestenbaum’s arrest is not the first involving a rabbi accused of using the Internet to lure minors. In December 2001, Rabbi Jerald Levy, 58, of Boca Raton, Fla., was sentenced to six years in federal prison for downloading child pornography and luring teenage boys to meet him for sex ... In the aftermath of two highly publicized child abuse cases involving a rabbi teaching at a day school and a kosher butcher, the Chicago Rabbinical Council a number of years ago established a special bet din, or rabbinical court, to address allegations of sexual abuse of children."

“One Friday night 33 years ago, when Yisroel Richtberg was 12 years old, an older boy sneaked into his dorm room at his Chasidic yeshiva in Israel, pulled off Richtberg’s pajama pants and raped him. The same thing happened the next Shabbat. The boy told Richtberg (not his real name) that if he ever told anyone, the two would be blacklisted at all the yeshivas, and the attacker said he would kill himself. Richtberg didn’t tell. Instead, he sank into a cycle of depression, shame and isolation, one that would lead to a 20-year addiction to prostitutes, pornography and drugs, fronted by a double-life as an upstanding Chasidic rabbi, businessman and father of 12. Today, Richtberg is alive to tell his story because he got help from therapists and 12-step programs. He has made it his life’s mission to help others conquer an addiction so coated with shame that it resides at the very bottom of the hierarchies of addiction ... Whether acting out by compulsively masturbating to pornography, having serial affairs, frequenting prostitutes or habitually seeking homosexual or heterosexual one-night stands, sex addicts sink into a pit of shame and self-loathing, often threatening their families and livelihood. It is difficult to determine whether the incidence of addiction is higher or lower in the Jewish community than in the general population, where Carnes estimates that about 5 percent to 8 percent of adults have a sexual compulsivity disorder. Conversations with several mental health professionals who work with the Jewish community, from ultra-Orthodox to unaffiliated, revealed that all had a significant number of patients dealing with sex addiction, including several rabbis. Several pulpit rabbis revealed that congregants had sought counseling from them about sex addiction. Weiss believes the vast majority of sex addicts are men, and pointed out that female sex addicts might be too embarrassed to seek help, or might be getting paid to act out as prostitutes or exotic dancers. Weiss estimates that about 20 percent of addicts are sexual offenders, usually engaging in exhibitionism or voyeurism ... With the help of Rabbi Juda Mintz, himself a recovering addict to Internet pornography, Beit T’Shuvah and the Board of Rabbis of Southern California recently co-sponsored a series on addictions ... A rabbi at the new yeshiva, an ad hoc counselor for boys who have sexual problems, was the first person Richtberg told about the rape and his subsequent behaviors: compulsive masturbating, viewing pornographic materials and a sexual relationship with another boy ... Mark Altman (not his real name), a 40-something married professional, who was a sex addict for more than 20 years and has been in recovery for five, was raised by two alcoholics and suffered a childhood trauma that set off his addiction. He began sexually acting out as a teenager, 'numbing out' by compulsively masturbating, he said. Starting in college, he sought sexual liaisons with men at sex clubs, bathhouses and park restrooms, while in his public life he dated women. He continued his double life through 15 years of marriage, raising three children and belonging to a Reform temple ... At the height of his addiction, he was acting out almost daily — adult bookstores, cybersex, phone sex and cruising for sexual encounters. ... Within a year and half [of marriage, Rabbi Richtberg] lost his business and started bouncing checks within his own community. In 1990, he pleaded guilty to business fraud for which he later served a 20-month sentence ... Richtberg went on his last cocaine binge in October 1991. Richtberg said he stayed away from prostitutes for a full year. But then one day, he found himself in Manhattan, in tears and with a prostitute. The next day, he and his therapist came up with one last hope: Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA). Richtberg went to a meeting that day and has been clean since."

"In his 35-year career, Rabbi Juda Mintz established a Jewish youth group in Montreal, founded a traditional congregation and a campus Hillel in Atlanta and led more than 50 missions to Israel — all without the aid of a computer. But when he was hired at a Mount Freedom, N.J., synagogue at the age of 56, his board felt the rabbi should have a computer. It didn’t take long before Mintz stumbled upon Internet pornography. For 18 months, he spent several hours a day numbing out in front of the computer ... In the last two months before he was caught, Mintz’s addiction spiraled down to child pornography, for which he could face up to three years in federal prison. For now, he is living at Beit T’Shuvah, running a weekly 12-step minyan at Kehillat Israel in Beverlywood and working to alert community leaders — and especially educators — to the allure of Internet pornography."

"I'm sitting in my office one morning, going through my e-mail, and I find a bit of spam from an online porn site called DoMeLive.com. Live sex, it promises--you on one end, a heavy-breathing nude human being on the other. 'Free samples,' it says, supplying a password and log-in. No harm in looking, I figure, and I click. The site that I visited, it turns out, is garden variety. The technology for doing live, nearly full-motion video has got a lot better lately, and plenty of places are doing a brisk business providing live peep shows online. I talked to Scott Hirsch, a budding Bob Guccione and the 33-year-old proprietor of DoMeLive.com and the Internet Video Group, its parent company. One of the bigger cybersex sellers, IVG employs three dozen women to, er, interact with men online. They work out of a 22,000-sq.-ft. 'cyberbroadcast' facility in Pompano Beach, Fla., with all the facilities, including a gymnasium for its workers. The place cost $1.6 million. No problem, says Hirsch; his business was profitable three months after it opened its electronic doors. You do the math: IVG serves up roughly 8,000 peep-show minutes a day at $5.95 a minute, a weekly take of roughly $300,000. Hirsch just bought a big red Mercedes-Benz. Also a five-bedroom house. He fell into online porn after discovering the glories of electronic direct marketing in the contact-lens business. 'We were selling $1 million a year online,' says Hirsch, 'and I thought, if we're doing this well with contact lenses, imagine what we could do with adult entertainment.' It was easy to find customers--Hirsch just trolled Usenet for e-mail addresses. And it was easier still to find women to work in his facility. Most are former exotic dancers who were sick of the daily bump and grind and find the frictionless economy of the Internet a welcome relief. 'We offer a much healthier lifestyle,' says Hirsch. "We treat them like princesses.'"

"A 34-year-old Eilat resident was charged today in a Be'er Sheva court of sexually abusing an underage teenager from Belarus over the past three years. According to the indictment, Sergei Mayatski 'imported' the youth from Minsk, in Belarus, after he met him in a public park during a visit to the city in September 1999. Following a number of meetings with the youngster, who was 13 at the time, Mayatski met his parents and convinced them to allow him to bring their son to Israel. It is unclear whether the parents were aware of Mayatski's intentions. Two weeks later, the teenager was sent to Israel, where a friend of Mayatski received him at the airport as his own departure was delayed for two weeks because of a problem with his entry visa into Israel. The friend took the teen to his home in Ashdod, and according to the youth's testimony, also sexually abused him. Upon his arrival to Israel, in November 1999, Mayatski collected the youth from Ashdod, took him to Eilat, and presented him as his son. However, during these years, Mayatski systematically sodomized him. The sexual abuse was revealed nine days ago following a complaint filed by Mayatski at the police that the youth had disappeared. When the teenager was located, he was questioned and said that he left home because he was tired of serving as Mayatski's sex slave."

"More than 2,300 girls and boys under the age of 12 were victims of sexual assault in the past year, constituting 30 percent of the new cases reported to the sexual assault aid centers. Almost 26 percent of the victims were 13 to 18 years old ... Forty percent of the sexual assaults were carried out in the victim's home. 'The home, of all places, which should be a safe, protective and supporting place, is where many of the horrors take place,' states the report. About half of the victims refrained from going to the police. The most prevalent attack - 26 percent of the new calls - was rape, including gang rape. About 16 percent of the callers complained about incest by fathers (6.5 percent), brothers (2.6 percent) or other relatives. Some 14 percent complained of indecent acts. About 30 percent of the 110 gang rape victims who called the Tel Aviv aid center were men. Out of 519 calls reporting non-gang rape to this center, 25 percent were men. Some 20 percent of the victims of indecent acts reported in Tel Aviv were men. 'The sexual assault of boys, male youths and men is a hushed-up crime, which is almost completely absent from discourse in Israeli society,' the report states. 'It does not occur to the victims that anyone would listen to their ordeal.' The centers operate a hotline and support groups, and accompany the victims during the criminal procedures ... According to the report, the largest group of victims - constituting 19 percent - were attacked by family relatives, 4.2 percent were attacked by a spouse, and 14 percent by a friend or acquaintance. Only 12 percent of the assaults were perpetrated by a complete stranger."

Top-shelf publishing empires and red-top tabloids have gorged on the 'freedom' that Harrison created ever since. Post-Harrison, we live in a world of wired-up freelance hacks, club girls with miniature recording and photographic devices hidden in their teddy bears, paps with 500mm lenses, and gumshoes with bugs for every occasion – all of them hunting the dirty secrets that will make them rich. Until the early 1950s, printed gossip-mongering was a tame, timid, business ... In 1952 Robert Harrison dramatically destroyed this restraint. Marvin Hersh, a Florida Atlantic University professor, was charged with alien smuggling and passport fraud for going to Honduras and bringing a teen-age boy back to Boca Raton, Florida for sex. Affidavits described Hersh as a longtime pedophile who traveled to Central America and Asia to find victims. He passed the boy off as his son. Hersh’s friend, Nelson Jay Buler, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida was charged with travelling for the purpose of illegal sexual contact with a minor, and aggravated sexual abuse of a child in Honduras. According to Title 18, Section 2423, a federal statute in the US, it is a crime for any American citizen to travel abroad with the intent to sexually abuse children. Sentences can be up to 10 years of imprisonment plus fines of US$ 250,000 ("Bond set for man accused of Honduras juvenile-sex trips," Associated Press) ...
Roman Israilov of Brooklyn, New York enslaved and raped a 20-year-old immigrant Russian woman and sexually abused her. He had intended later to sell her. Police who were notified by a neighbor arrested him. The police were having problems questioning the woman because she had just recently arrived and spoke very little English. "According to a report published in the Ma'ariv daily on Friday, recently elected chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yona Metzger allegedly sexually harassed four men of various ages and from various sectors of society. The men said that Metzger touched their bodies and fondled them. The report goes on to say that two of the men successfully passed a polygraph test, at the request of the paper. Metzger denied the allegations against him and said that that they were an attempt to sully his name. The paper received the first account of sexual harassment some three weeks before the elections for chief rabbi which took place on April 14. According to the account, given to the paper by a secular man named David, the rabbi allegedly touched him at wedding celebration in the late 80's. According to David, Metzger touched him on the chest and arm and slipped his hand under David's shirt while the two were talking. At the beginning of April, a religious man told the paper that he recently had met Metzger, during which the rabbi asked him to remove his shirt and then allegedly proceeded to grope his arm and chest. An investigation led to another man with a similar complaint against the rabbi. According to the report, the third case, which took place in 1998 when Metzger was the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, came to the attention of Chief Israeli Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron. Bakshi-Doron confirmed the incident' ... [In another case] Metzger was suspected of forging the signature of his driver as a witness on various ketubot - Jewish wedding contracts. Allegedly, the object was to enable Metzger to conduct as many wedding ceremonies as possible in a single evening. Allegations have also been made that Metzger had demanded payment from couples he had wed, in violation of the law."

Chanes was charged with running porno Web sites for the mob, sites that stole thousands of credit card numbers from dumb and dumber Web surfers. Chanes -- philanthropist and budding movie producer -- was named as partner of Richard Martino, reputed Gambino family soldier, according to an indictment handed up by Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf ... Chanes' lawyer, Rusty Wing, said his client is not guilty and had gotten legal advice 'all the way along' insisting that the porno Web sites were legitimate ... But a look at Norman Chanes' past makes clear that something like this was not entirely unpredictable. In certain law enforcement circles, Chanes is a legend, a King of Scams cited repeatedly for blatantly false advertising. They say Chanes' shtick was to sell you nothing for something, to make the worthless seem priceless -- just as he shaped his image in life, cloaking himself in the trappings of legitimacy ... It started with the Free Gifts packages of the 1970s ... Chanes' companies were referred to as frauds by the Better Business Bureau in 1980 ... [In 1982] he was arrested by postal inspectors on charges of selling what he called Marine surplus binoculars that were really plastic junk from China. He pleaded guilty and immediately offered to cooperate against his close friend and partner in crime, Monroe Caine. 'He was one of the few people I've dealt with who'd do anything to stay out of jail,' one law enforcement agent recalled. 'He'd give up his mother, his father. Caine was a good friend [but Chanes] had no problem with that' ... Prosecutors say Chanes then moved on to the next big thing -- phone sex. During the early 1990s, he met a man who would not fit in around the Hamptons - alleged gangster Martino. Together through Chanes' company, Harvest Advertising, they marketed 900 numbers and raked in the cash ... 'I knew that Norman was running phone sex,' said another business partner. 'He went under the radar. The whole industry changed. There were not that many people in the mail-order business. Maybe 80% were legit, 20% were notorious. But the whole country was different. The whole industry was different. All of a sudden, it became scammier and scammier.' At the same time, Chanes was becoming wealthier and wealthier ... In 1996, Chanes, Martino and David Chew [Jewish?], publisher of the skin magazine High Society, jumped into the porno Web site business, according to the indictment. Dupes who visited highsociety.com, ygal.com and climax.com were told they could take a free tour of the site. They had to enter credit card numbers to prove their age and were assured they would not be charged. Hidden within the sexually explicit images on the site was text admitting that viewers indeed would be charged. This text was supposed to make the scam legitimate, investigators say. The money poured in. Billing at $90 per month, they pocketed more than $230 million -- at least $8 million of which went to the [mafia] Gambinos, prosecutors charged. Meanwhile, in the Hamptons, Norman Chanes was listed as a celebrity client by caterer Francesca Events, next to Cates & Kline, Joe Lieberman, Al Gore and Bill Clinton. By 2000, he had become executive pro-ducer of 'Blue Moon,' starring Ben Gazzara, Rita Moreno and 'Sopranos' cast member Vincent Pastore. The flick's reviews were mixed. By 2002, he was a member of the Jewish Center of the Hamptons, listed as a major contributor to the High Holy Day Appeal."

"An orthodox Jewish businessman who allegedly tried to buy a friend's wife for $1m was slandered by a rabbi who spread smears about his sex life, a court heard yesterday. Brian Maccaba, 45, a Dublin-born convert, is suing Yaakov Lichtenstein after rumours of perverse adultery spread across their tightly-knit Jewish community in Hendon, north London. The case has been described as a real-life version of the Hollywood film Indecent Proposal, in which Robert Redford offered a couple $1m if the wife, Demi Moore, spent the night with him. Mr Maccaba, chief executive of the international technology firm Cognotec, allegedly sent a series of poems to Nathalie Attar, a young orthodox Jewish woman who taught his children. In one poem, entitled 'knocking on heaven's door', Mr Maccaba is said to have offered Mrs Attar's husband $1m (about £650,000) to spend his life with her. The Attars later told their religious leader, Rabbi Lichtenstein. In a preliminary hearing at the high court in London, Clive Freedman QC, for Mr Maccaba, said that from January to June 2001, Rabbi Lichtenstein, launched a campaign of slander against Mr Maccaba. The rabbi claimed Mr Maccaba was 'an adulterer involved in all types of sexual perversion and particularly in chasing after young Jewish newly-weds'. He allegedly told prominent members of the Jewish community that Mr Maccaba had slept with one or more married Jewish women and kept a list of women he wanted to seduce.""

"Finally, after decades of sexual abuse of his daughter and grandchildren, an 82-year-old is convicted. Indictments in sex crimes within the family have been flooding the Israeli courts in recent years. Behind closed doors at the Tel Aviv District Court, the trial of an 82-year-old man recently ended; for decades he had sexually abused his daughter and three grandchildren - two granddaughters and a grandson, his son's children. The accused committed indecent acts on his grandchildren from the time they reached the ages of 4, 8 and 9. His daughter lived through a prolonged nightmare, from the time she was 14 until three years ago, when she turned 54. During all those years, the father frequently raped her. The daughter did not file a complaint with the police because, she says, she was afraid that such a complaint would lead to the breaking off of her connection with her parents, Holocaust survivors, on whom she had pity. The person who finally found the courage to complain to the police was the son of the accused.".

Rabbis and Sex Abuse Accusations: Jewish Leaders Begin Struggle to Combat Problem, Newsday, May 26, 2003
"After more than a year of charges and disclosures concerning sexual abuse of young people by Catholic priests, the story may sound familiar. But the camp, Mogen Avraham, is a popular summer retreat in Bethel for Orthodox Jewish children. And the accused was not a priest, but a teaching rabbi from Forest Hills. The alleged 1998 incident at Camp Mogen Avraham is just one in a growing dossier of allegations that rabbis, cantors and other Jewish religious leaders have abused children and teenagers in their care, a Newsday investigation has found. In sheer numbers, the problem is unlikely to rival the Catholic Church's, since priests outnumber rabbis by roughly nine to one. While there is no data on the number of clergy with sexual disorders, experts say that, anecdotally, the problem does not seem as severe in the rabbinate as in the priesthood, even in relative terms. Even so, some rabbis call the sexual abuse allegations a 'crisis,' and religious organizations are grappling with ways to handle it. 'We have a huge problem on our hands, a problem that is just beginning to be addressed in religious circles,' Vicki Polin, a psychotherapist, said in recent testimony to the Maryland legislature. Polin, who is Jewish and calls herself a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, runs The Awareness Center, a Baltimore-based clearinghouse that tracks sexual abuse allegations against Jewish religious leaders. The center's Web site lists about 40 alleged cases of abuse involving rabbis and cantors. As with the Catholic scandals, Jewish victims say they still struggle years, even decades, later with this betrayal of trust. 'I can honestly say that he ruined not only my Bas-Mitzvah, but my faith in Judaism,' wrote one woman, now 30, referring to Rabbi Sidney Goldenberg ... Religious authorities fail to report abuse charges to the police. Among strictly observant Orthodox Jews, this tendency is bolstered by the ancient doctrine of mesira, which prohibits Jews from informing on other Jews to secular authorities, a legacy of centuries of oppression of Jews in many countries. When religious leaders try to investigate cases and prevent abusers from having contact with children, their efforts often fai ... Alleged abusers continue to operate freely by moving among congregations, states, even countries. Avrohom Mondrowitz, a self-styled rabbi who once had a popular radio show in Brooklyn, is living openly and teaching in a Jerusalem college although he is wanted on charges of sexually abusing four Brooklyn boys, aged 10 to 16. If he ever returns to the United States, he will be arrested, according to the office of Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes. Many of the alleged abusers were popular, even charismatic leaders, who were thought to be particularly good in relating to young people. Rabbi Baruch Lanner, convicted last year of endangering the welfare of two girls at a New Jersey yeshiva, sidestepped abuse allegations for years, in part because of his reputation as a dynamic figure in an Orthodox youth program ... The rabbinical council is expected to discuss ways to adjudicate abuse allegations against its members, with penalties that include ouster. Sources within the organization say that the impetus for the panel's work includes old abuse allegations against Rabbi Ephraim Bryks of Kew Gardens Hills, which he has repeatedly denied, and the recent arrest of Rabbi Israel Kestenbaum of Highland Park, N.J. Kestenbaum, a chaplaincy leader for the New York Board of Rabbis, was charged in February with endangering the welfare of a minor after allegedly discussing sex with an undercover police officer posing as a teenage girl in a chat room called 'I Love Older Men.' Kestenbaum has pleaded not guilty. Rabbis concerned about sex abuse say accusations against a rabbi are often handled quietly, or not at all. Accused rabbis go on hiatus briefly, then revive their ministries in other congregations, even other countries in the far-flung Diaspora. One of those was Rabbi Matis Weinberg. Accused of sexually abusing students at his California yeshiva two decades ago, he is said to have agreed to leave teaching. But Weinberg resurrected his teaching career in Israel."

"A Queens rabbi who had been dogged by old sexual abuse allegations from Canada this week resigned his membership in a prestigious rabbinical organization and agreed to leave Jewish education, officials of the group said last night. The Rabbinical Council of America, an organization of Orthodox rabbis, was believed to be considering ousting Rabbi Ephraim Bryks of Kew Gardens Hills as a result of the lingering abuse allegations, which arose when he was the pulpit rabbi and yeshiva administrator in a Winnipeg congregation during the 1980s. Bryks has always denied those claims and continued the denial in submitting his resignation ... Bryks' resignation from the council came as the 1,100-member organization, meeting in Rye, was considering a resolution on sexual abuse."

"The Friedmans of Great Neck are a Philip Roth family from hell. That is why Andrew Jarecki’s new film, 'Capturing the Friedmans,' is such a compulsively watchable yet appalling experience. Arnold Friedman was an award-winning high school teacher, a proverbial pillar of the community. His wife Elaine and his three sons, the oldest David, now a popular children’s clown known as Silly Billy, Seth and Jesse, the youngest, seemed to be happy and well adjusted. They lived the good life on the Gold Coast in Great Neck. Until Arnold and Jesse were arrested in the late 1980s, and later imprisoned, for multiple accounts of alleged sexual assault on the adolescent boys who came to their house for computer classes. Then everything fell apart. The neighbors turned on the Friedmans and they were pilloried in the press. Finally, the family itself imploded in a harrowing round of bitter name-calling and harsh feuding. How do we know this? Because the Friedmans recorded it all. 'The Friedmans kept the cameras running all the time,' Jarecki says with a mixture of disbelief and fascination. The home movies of happier times, the videotapes of corrosive battling, even a perversely self-flagellating video diary kept by David Friedman, all turn up in 'Capturing the Friedmans,' making it, as Jarecki himself says, 'the most intimate film I’ve seen in terms of being so close to a family.' Of course, that begs the question of whether you’d want to be close to this family. Still, as Jarecki himself says, the Friedmans are a quintessential Long Island Jewish-American family and, although the film is relatively circumspect about their Jewishness — we see a disastrous Passover seder and photos of the boys lighting a menorah — the family’s Jewish identity is a sort of subterranean theme running under the surface of the film. 'A lot of what makes this family seem odd are a lot of those traits are classic Jewish traits,' Jarecki, himself a Jewish resident of New York, insists in a telephone interview from Rome. 'They’re like all of us, only more so. There’s a certain Jewish quality about the showmanship of this family and the capacity for self-dramatization. There’s a certain quality about their arguments; these are very Jewish arguments' ... Great Neck itself is another Jewish character in the film. At key points in 'Capturing the Friedmans,' which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Jarecki cuts to a helicopter shot over the affluent town, revealing it as a peninsula isolated from the nearby communities. The isolation is both metaphorical and literal, he says. 'Great Neck is such a Jewish community, it’s almost a shtetl,' Jarecki says. “I began to look at Great Neck as a sort of giant pulsating Jewish amoeba, an organism, surrounded by the soupy mass of Long Island Sound. We see Jewish people on trains and cars, the LIE as an artery bringing supplies to the organism. That’s what feeds the organism — everything that comes in is either a Jewish person or food and sustenance for the organism.'"

"Two brothers of a prominent New York City cantor accused of sexually assaulting his nephew can testify against him, a judge ruled Wednesday. Prosecutors said the two men are prepared to testify that as children they also were molested by their brother, Howard Nevison, who has led worshippers in prayer and song at New York's Temple Emanu-El since 1978. Nevison, 62, was charged last year with assaulting his nephew during family get-togethers between 1993 and 1998. One of Nevison's brothers, Lawrence, was convicted in 2000 of sexually assaulting the same boy and is serving a prison sentence. Lawrence Nevison and a second brother -- the boy's father, Henry -- both claim they were molested by Howard Nevison when they were young. Witnesses normally are barred from discussing a defendant's past crimes, but Judge Paul W. Tressler said their claims were distinctive enough to indicate a 'signature of the same perpetrator' and could be heard by jurors. Defense attorneys said the old allegations were maliciously motivated and would prejudice a jury against their client. The boy making the accusations, now 13, may also testify. Temple Emanu-El is New York's largest Reform synagogue. Howard Nevison, who in 1994 became the first cantor to sing at the Vatican, is on paid leave from the temple and is free on bail."

"These are mostly video compilations," he says dismissively as he flips past the ads -- Extra Busty Beauties, Real Hard Sex, More Dripping Wet Sex, Lots of Filthy Sex, Filthy Sex Fantasies -- then stops. 'Here we go.' It's a glitzy head shot of Jenna Jameson, the reigning superstar of porn, appearing in her latest release, I Dream of Jenna, billed as 'a comical adventure with 10 of the nastiest sex scenes ever filmed!' Hirsch is 41 years old. He has a broad, handsome face and deep California tan, and he wears his collar open, revealing glimpses of a massive chest earned from pumping iron three days a week. Jameson's film is just what he was looking for -- not a compilation of steamy scenes but an actual movie with a story line, high production values, and a star-studded cast led by the vixen he calls 'by far the biggest star in the history of the adult business.' But Hirsch won't actually watch this movie -- he couldn't care less about Jameson's sexual escapades. What really turns him on is the business of porn. Nineteen years ago, he and a partner scraped together $20,000 to found Vivid Entertainment of Van Nuys, Calif. Today, Hirsch is a multimillionaire, Vivid is the biggest XXX film studio in the world, with revenue estimated at $100 million, and it has Jameson locked up in a seven-year deal. You've probably never heard of Steve Hirsch -- and that's how he likes it. He'd rather have you focus on his Vivid Girls, porn stars he began manufacturing in 1984 by bringing back the old Hollywood contract system ... Jenna Jameson, porn's top star, gets royal treatment -- and brings in an estimated $15 million a year. All of which makes this soft-spoken businessman a striking emblem of what's happened to the world of porn in recent years. As the industry has grown to proportions befitting its obsession with size -- altogether, magazines, movies, websites, sex toys, phone lines, and strip clubs account for somewhere between $4 billion and $10 billion annually -- it has become so complex and competitive that only the smartest, soberest business minds can prosper. And though the XXX film business was once considered the sleazy underbelly of Hollywood, today Hirsch lectures at the USC Business School and has a Dartmouth grad and MBA as co-chairman of his firm ... "Several months ago, the Russian crime squad in the Tel Aviv central police unit celebrated its success in recruiting two prostitutes to testify against Boniyat Zada, who is suspected of being one of Israel's major 'importers' of women from the former Soviet Union. Zada was arrested and indicted, but the case could not go to trial and Zada was released. This was because 'suddenly, our two witnesses disappeared,' says the commander of the squad, Superintendent Pini Aviram. During the past year, some 20 women who were slated to testify against their pimps have similarly disappeared. The crackdown on prostitution in Israel got a legislative boost when the Law Against Trafficking in Women went into effect in August 2000. However, the Tel Aviv police's Russian crime squad has only nine investigators, who are left to wage an almost hopeless battle against a growing phenomenon ... A prostitute who agrees to testify is housed in a Tel Aviv hostel while waiting for the pimp's trial to begin. 'The main problem is the waiting period before testifying,' Aviram explains. 'Sometimes the women have to wait for nine months or even a year. During this long period, they have no income and many of them also continue to meet with those against whom they're supposed to testify,' he adds. 'There is simply no appropriate framework for the witnesses,' according to attorney Naomi Levenkron, the legal director of The Hotline for Migrant Workers. 'Everyone knows where the women are staying. There are no guards around the hostel and anyone can enter and meet with them' ... However, it is clear that some of the witnesses are forced to 'disappear' for their own safety."

"For 26 years, Edward Samuels was a highly respected New York Law School professor. And then the tech department stumbled onto his stash of child pornography. But if you thought he’d resign, you’d be wrong. Instead, he sat back while his colleagues argued the merits of his case. Then, curiously, the techies who discovered his secret were fired. On the evening of August 15, 2002, just days before new students were due to arrive for the fall semester, an e-mail titled “Distressing News” went out to the community of New York Law School, in lower Manhattan. Because of the alarming heading, many professors clicked the e-mail open thinking it might announce the death of one of the faculty. “I’m saddened to report to you that I learned this afternoon that our colleague, Professor Edward Samuels, was arrested on charges relating to possession of child pornographic images,” the dean of the school, Richard Matasar, had written. “The Law School has placed Professor Samuels on paid administrative leave so that he may attend to his defense . . . Our hearts go out to Ed and his family as they face the difficult time ahead.” Several faculty members promptly called each other to report that a hoax had been perpetrated, and at least one called the dean to warn him that a hacker had infiltrated the system. The following morning, however, the story was splashed across the pages of several newspapers, including the New York Post, which proffered the irresistible tabloid headline: PROF PORN STUNNER—STAFF FINDS XXX KID PIX ON HIS OFFICE COMPUTER. Indeed, computer technicians at the school had happened upon pornographic pictures of young girls while trying to fix Samuels’s computer, the papers reported, and a police search of his apartment on the Upper West Side had yielded 159 disks of illegal images. Later reports would detail the gruesome and disturbingly cruel nature of some of the photographs—young girls being raped by adults or dogs; babies being sexually assaulted; young children bound and whipped. Samuels had more than 100,000 pictures, the largest stash ever seen by the Manhattan D.A.’s office. Colleagues were staggered. The balding, diminutive Samuels had been, for 26 years, a highly respected member of the faculty and a dedicated copyright scholar and professor. He was described as quiet and thoughtful by peers and was popular with students. As one longtime faculty member put it, “You always hear ‘the last person in the world,’ and I’m not saying I can think of someone else who would have done this, but this totally blew you away.” By the following Monday, when staff and faculty were back at school, no one could talk of anything else. “We were all looking at each other and going, ‘Can you believe it?’ ” one professor said. Staff members who were friendly with the technicians who’d discovered the porn confirmed the information for incredulous professors. “It made me sick,” recalled Joan Argento, who had been Samuels’s assistant for five years. “There were times when I had my daughter at work and he said, ‘Hi, honey, how are you?’ It just made me sick.” But if staff members were appalled, for Samuels’s faculty colleagues and friends the discovery posed a much more complex dilemma. Even after he pleaded guilty to possessing 100 images, many of them remained torn. And when the two computer technicians who had discovered the pictures were later fired, there was a conspicuous lack of interest in rallying to their defense."

"Everyone knows the old joke about how you get your porn star name. Take your first pet's name and add the street on which you grew up. But how did Adam Glasser get his nom de porn? "I WAS LOOKING FOR something that was memorable and that had a little humor to it," he says. "As a kid, you used to hear about books and their authors, you know, `Yellow Snow' by I. P. Freely? There was also `Under the Bleachers' by Seymore Butts." And thus, a porn star was born. Back in 1991, Glasser began producing and starring in adult movies under that pseudonym, and since then he's made over 70 "gonzo- style" pornographic films. A couple of years back, Showtime contacted him with the idea of creating a late-night reality show around his life as a porn entrepreneur. "Family Business," broadcast Friday nights, stars not only Glasser but also his mother, Lila, who does the company's accounting, and his cousin Stevie, who runs the distribution side of his business. Glasser spoke with NEWSWEEK's B. J. Sigesmund about the show. Excerpts: NEWSWEEK: When did you decide you wanted to be in front of the camera, in addition to producing adult movies? ADAM GLASSER: That was from day one. That was my way of being unique in a sense. I participated and held the camera, it was my point of view all the way. Talk about the tone of your films. You call it gonzo-style adult entertainment. Gonzo refers to two things. First, it's nonscripted. There's no beginning, middle or end. Secondly, the filmmaker or cameraman has a direct role in the filming, whether sexually or just by engaging in an interview with the performer. There are no plots. It's really comparable to reality television that way. Pornography Goes Mainstream [NEWSWEEK]: You see your films as empowering for women.[GLASSER]: I like the women to somewhat dictate the action. I don't like men to be calling women names. It's made them easy for couples to watch them together. In my experience, it's not that women mind hardcore action. It's that they don't like action where they're degraded. I have a lot of women that correspond with me. Have your mother, Lila, and cousin Stevie, worked with you the whole time? My mom came to work for me following a divorce from my father after 30 years. I didn't want her to have to go out there and get a job. My mom joined probably in 1996. Steve joined in 1999. You can't trust anyone better than family. I've always had trouble with accounting issues in the industry. You also have a young son. Are you in touch with his mother? He's the son of [porn star] Taylor Hayes. She's retired. How did "Family Business" come about? I was involved in a somewhat high-profile obscenity case in 2000, and I was interviewed on PBS as part of a documentary on adult entertainment in the United Stages. The show's producers saw the interview, saw my mom was interviewed and was part of my company, and decided they wanted to talk to us. How did you feel about the opportunity? I had mixed feelings, considering the exposure my family would receive and considering my son was going to be involved. I've had to deal with certain stigmas being in the industry that I wouldn't wish on them. But then I looked at the big picture of it. I thought about the limited times I've ever dealt with anything uncomfortable. I thought of it as a way to give the public a view into this world that is often maligned and misrepresented. This series is an opportunity to show people that the industry is filled with normal people ... You're involved politically in the free-speech movement. I've been arrested four times, twice not in this country. People in this country are very confused about sexuality. Sex wouldn't have been made so potentially pleasurable if it were wrong. There are unfortunately so many people mixed up about it. Any opportunity I can take to make people's lives better sexually, I'm going to take it. When people start dictating what you can watch, you start getting into problems."

"More than a thousand unsuspecting Internet users around the world have recently had their computers hijacked by hackers, who computer security experts say are using them for pornographic Web sites. The hijacked computers, which are chosen by the hackers apparently because they have high-speed connections to the Internet, are secretly loaded with software that makes them send explicit Web pages advertising pornographic sites and offer to sign visitors up as customers. Unless the owner of the hijacked computer is technologically sophisticated, the activity is likely to go unnoticed. According to the computer investigators, that machine apparently is owned by Everyones Internet, a large independent Internet service company in Houston that also offers Web hosting services to a large number of companies. Jeff Lowenberg, the company's vice president of operations, said that he was not aware of any illegal activity on one of his company's computers but said that he would investigate ...Mr. Stewart, who has written a technical paper to help antivirus companies devise defenses against the porn-hijacking network, has named the program "migmaf," for "migrant Mafia," because he thinks the program originated in the Russian high-tech underworld. Hackers from the former Soviet Union have been linked to several schemes, including extortion attempts in which they threaten to shut down online casinos through Internet attacks unless the companies pay them off. Antispam activists have also accused Russian organized crime organizations of taking over home and business PC's to create networks for sending spam. "They always seem to lead back to the Russian mob," Mr. Stewart said."

"I'm trying to create a sexual revolution," he said in a telephone interview ... Pryanishnikov himself is being investigated on suspicion of illegally producing pornography. New law imposes minimum penalty on traffickers in women,

"Courts will now be required to impose a minimum penalty of two and a half to four years on anyone convicted of trading in women for the purpose of prostitution, according to a new law passed by the Knesset in second and third reading Tuesday. Nineteen MKs voted in favor of the bill and none were opposed. According to the new law, which was proposed MK Zahava Gal-On (Meretz,) courts will also be required to rule, in the absence of extenuating circumstances, that at least some of the sentence be served as active jail time. One of the interesting innovations of the bill is that an Israeli citizen who commits the crime of trafficking in human beings abroad can be made to stand trial in Israel. In addition, responding to the fact that prostitutes who are willing to testify against their pimps are forced to remain in Israel for months due to the courts' heavy workload, the new law stipulates that testimony can be taken from the women prior to the court proceedings, thereby allowing them to return to their countries of origin. "The Air Force has dropped sexual assault charges against an officer accused of raping an Air Force Academy cadet last year, but he still faces administrative punishment for less serious offenses, his lawyer said Friday. "We're pleased that the commander followed the advice of the investigating officer. We believe this is a fair and just outcome," said lawyer Frank Spinner. The charges against 2nd Lt. Ronen Segal were dropped after the investigating officer said the woman had been capable of giving or withholding consent and "did not in any way object to or resist". Segal performing a sexual act on her earlier, the Air Force said Friday. The woman — a freshman at the academy when Segal was a senior — testified last month that she went to his Colorado Springs home Aug. 25 after he sent her an e-mail asking to get together. She said she didn't remember what happened after they drank wine and began kissing, but that she was being raped when she came to. The woman who accused Segal of rape could not immediately be reached for comment. A staffer at the academy switchboard said she was not at the school and declined to give her home phone number. If Segal had been convicted of the criminal charges, he could have faced a life sentence and dismissal from the Air Force. He still faces discipline by the academy because he allegedly provided alcohol to the cadet, who was under age. Segal has until Monday to decide whether to accept punishment for dereliction of duty and conduct unbecoming an officer, said base spokesman Sgt. Gino Mattorno."

The rabbi hesitated, inhaled and said, "Yes." Kestenbaum, the former ethics watchdog at the prestigious New York Board of Rabbis, then acknowledged inviting his cyberpal to meet him for sex after they talked nine more times on the Internet. Kestenbaum was arrested in February when he showed up at their arranged meeting place, a Starbucks. "Kattie" was really William Smith, one of the NYPD's cybercops. The rabbi pleaded guilty with the understanding that when he is sentenced Oct. 10, he will get five years/ probation and psychiatric treatment from a doctor chosen by the Manhattan district attorney's office. Kestenbaum, 55, also will be a registered sex offender in New York for the rest of his life. "Three years ago, national shock jock Howard Stern called the straight-talking, gun-loving Dr. Brian Finkel a national hero because he wasn't intimidated by unending protests and threats outside his Phoenix abortion clinic. Not only did he patrol his now-closed clinic in a bulletproof vest and holstered gun, he taunted anti-abortion activists, calling them "religious racketeers," and "mean-spirited, hate-filled Christians engaged in guerrilla warfare." But now his medical license is on hold and he is waging a different fight, this one for his freedom. He goes to trial today, charged with 67 counts of sexual assault or abuse of 35 patients since 1986. At least one victim was going under anesthesia when she said Finkel fondled her, prosecutors say. Finkel has repeatedly denied the charges. Finkel, 53, a former Air Force flight surgeon who served in the first Gulf War, relished being on the front lines of the abortion battle, terminating more than 20,000 pregnancies in 20 years and proud of it. Of the 67 counts he is now facing, seven are for sexual assault, which each carries a term of five to 14 years in prison, making this the highest-stakes battle for the combative doctor. Richard Gierloff, Finkel's high-profile Phoenix defense attorney, has protested in court documents that the sheer weight of the charges will prejudice a jury and deny his client a fair trial. Judge Jeffrey Cates of Maricopa County Superior Court originally granted Geirloff's motion to have each count tried separately. But at the urging of prosecutors, Cates reconsidered and agreed that the pattern of the suspected abuse amounted to "aberrant behavior," requiring the counts to be considered in one trial. Gierloff was right that the long litany of charges would put off some prospective jurors. Eight members of a pool of 93 were excused last week after they said the number of counts convinced them Finkel had done something wrong. Prosecutors say Finkel is up against an avalanche of evidence. Prosecutor Blaine Gadow has listed 53 witnesses, including suspected victims and former staffers of Finkel's Metro Phoenix Women's Clinic. Finkel is facing charges that include "fondling, squeezing, massaging and twisting patients nipples" or stroking the genitals or legs. Cynthia Romo, a former employee, will testify the doctor was often alone with patients despite statements to the police that an attendant was always present. She is also expected to say Finkel "looked forward to doing exams of large-breasted women," according to court records. "Two customers came. One chose me, took me to a room and after half an hour, his friend began to bang on the door and shout that he should come out. He got up, dressed and told me: `Come, sweetie, you're under arrest.' I thought he was joking, but below a patrol car was waiting, and they took me to the lock-up." This is the testimony that K.T. of Moldova gave in Haifa's Kishon lock-up to volunteers who came to help her. Her testimony, like that of 105 other victims of trafficking in women in this country, was included in a report released yesterday by Israeli human rights organizations, which will be discussed today in the Knesset's committee on traffic in women. The testimony paints a grim picture of oppression and humiliation as the authorities turn a blind eye. Though there has been some improvement in the state's handling of this problem over the last few years, the report says, it still tends to relate to traffic in women primarily as a problem of illegal immigration, organized crime or public health - and not as a cruel violation of human rights. Some 44 percent of the women interviewed for the report said that policemen had visited the brothels where they worked. "Policemen, of all people, should know that many women are forcibly held and compelled to have sex through threats and violence," wrote the authors, Dr. Naomi Levenkron of the Hotline for Migrant Workers, Dr. Yossi Dahan of the Adva Center and representatives of Woman to Woman - the Haifa Feminist Center. "Policemen-customers are essentially committing rape instead of helping the victims of this traffic to escape and gathering evidence to indict the traffickers," the report continues. But when the Hotline appealed to the Justice Ministry department that investigates policemen, it was told that policemen who visit brothels are guilty of disciplinary rather than criminal offenses .. The price of a woman ranges from $5,000 to $10,000, the report says, and often, several buyers will split the purchase price and then share the woman among them. The sale process is one of the clearest expressions of the women's slavery: The women reported that the buyers examined their sexual organs and even their teeth. "I didn't understand where they were taking us in the middle of the night," related H.A., interviewed in January. "But when I saw many naked women in the apartment, I began to understand. They told me to undress... I was so afraid that I wet my pants." About 30 percent of the women said they were bought in their home countries, while 72 percent were smuggled into Israel over the Egyptian border ... The average age of the women interviewed for the report was 23. Only 9 percent had previously engaged in prostitution. They were led to believe that they could earn thousands of dollars in Israel. In practice, they received an average of NIS 20 per customer, while the pimp received NIS 100 to NIS 600. They worked an average of 13 hours a day, seven days a week; 35 percent said they were even forced to work during their periods. About 13 percent of the women said they received no money at all for their work; 40 percent said they were imprisoned; and 8 percent said they were deprived of food - either as punishment or to make them thinner and more attractive. One woman related that after she had not menstruated for three months, she asked to see a doctor. The doctor felt her, said she was pregnant and announced that he would perform an abortion for $1,000. Only later - after she finally got her period - did she learn that the doctor was actually a veterinarian."

"A man who pleaded no contest to the attempted rape of an 11-year-old boy will serve no prison time but instead will spend 10 years on probation in Israel. Raymond M. Pietrowski, 45, will live in an Israeli halfway house in Jerusalem, where he will undergo sex offender treatment from a doctor there with a background in clinical psychology. Pietrowski is from Chicago and committed the offense in July 2001 while visiting the child's guardian, a friend in Naples. He'll receive credit for the nearly two years he has spent in Collier County jail and in a state mental hospital after the court declared he was incompetent to stand trial. Originally charged with two counts of capital sexual battery, both punishable by automatic life sentences, Pietrowski instead was formally convicted in a hearing Wednesday of two counts of attempted rape. Those are punishable by up to 30 years in prison. In order for the judge to approve the plea agreement to shift the probation to a foreign country, Collier Circuit Judge Lauren Miller held a hearing Monday for the court and both lawyers to interview by phone the doctor, Gerald Yehuda Oppenheim. They were satisfied he is a legitimate doctor who can treat Pietrowski. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Pietrowski must have no unsupervised contact with children younger than 18, may not return to the United States during his probationary period, and must provide copies of plane tickets and affidavits proving he arrived in Israel ... Attorneys for both sides said the shifting of Pietrowski to a different country is a bit unusual but not unheard of. Pietrowski has ties to people in Israel and may have dual citizenship there and in the United States ... Pietrowski was arrested in December 2001 on a warrant. He was charged with having oral sex with the boy, whose name is not being published because of the nature of the case. Pietrowski also received a 15-year suspended prison sentence. That means if he violates his probation in Israel, he can be brought back to the United States and sentenced to that term."

"Harold Bloomfield, a nationally known Del Mar psychiatrist and best-selling author who pleaded guilty to drugging two female patients, was sentenced Friday to five years of probation, 500 hours of community service and was forbidden to practice medicine for five years. Superior Court Judge Frederick Maguire said Bloomfield also faces 270 days in jail if he violates the terms of his probation. "You're just a glorified drug abuser and the sad thing about it is you should know better," the judge said in sentencing Bloomfield. Bloomfield pleaded guilty Jan. 23 to two felony counts of administering or furnishing a harmful or illegal substance. He drugged two of his female patients with Ecstasy, an illegal drug known for its ability to make users hyper-sensitive to visual and physical stimuli ... An attorney for one of the women said her client is still traumatized ... Two investigators from the Medical Board of California told reporters that a complaint pending against Bloomfield potentially could result in the revocation of his medical license, which was suspended in December. Bloomfield wrote or co-wrote 17 books that together have sold more than 7 million copies. He has appeared on "Larry King Live," "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Good Morning America." In 1988, he ran for governor of California as a Natural Law Party candidate. Bloomfield studied at the State University of New York and trained in psychiatry at Yale University of Medicine. According to court documents, one patient said she went to Bloomfield's home office on Luneta Drive in Del Mar in July for marital counseling and was directed to his master bedroom. During that session, which was done on the balcony of his bedroom, she was given lemonade that made her feel "strange," according to a search warrant affidavit. After she complained about pain from recent augmentation surgery, Bloomfield offered to examine her breasts, according to the documents, and when he left to make a call she fled the residence with the lemonade. Her boyfriend took her to UCSD Medical Center where her urine tested positive for amphetamines, barbiturates and opiates, according to the papers, and the drink tested positive for methamphetamine and Ecstasy."

"The rabbinical court that was to hear testimony from American-born Rabbi Matis Weinberg regarding accusations of alleged molestation of yeshiva students has dismissed the case because of a lack of witnesses to recent alleged impropriety ... Weinberg, 56, a charismatic, Baltimore-born Torah scholar, author and lecturer, has been accused of impropriety in his relations with students in the early 1980s at a yeshiva in California and more recently at another school in Jerusalem ... The decision by the Israeli rabbinic court was greeted with surprise by alleged victims, a rabbi who is advising them and the head of a rabbinic panel in New York that accepted written and oral testimony last spring and referred the case to Israel. "I'm very surprised," said Rabbi Shmuel Kaminetsky, who headed the panel that met in New York on May 1. "Is there a statute of limitations? I didn't know there was such a thing in Halacha," he said, using the Hebrew word for rabbinic canon law. Kaminetsky said that he had agreed to convene the tribunal in New York in order to keep the matter within the rabbinic legal system but that there was nothing more for him to do now. He said he had no advice for the alleged victims who testified before his tribunal. "We thought we'd prevent it going to [civil] court, but if we can't do it, then it's up to them; they have to do whatever they want to do," he said. One alleged victim in San Diego said that he and another complainant were considering whether to take further legal steps. The alleged victim, who had submitted written testimony to the Kaminetsky tribunal, exclaimed, "I can't believe it," when told of the Jerusalem panel's decision. "My question is, why did they decline to deal with it? What's important is that people are made aware of the situation."

"A special Knesset committee finds that "3,000 women are sold each year in Israel's sex industry, in transactions with an annual volume of $1 billion." Exploitation of sex workers includes imprisonment, and other forms of rank coercion." The special Knesset committee's interim report is to be released Sunday. It describes the sex industry as a "modern form of slavery." The report's authors charge that current law enforcement efforts against pimps and sex worker traders are inadequate. The laws provide for jail terms of up to 16 years for trafficking in humans. The courts, however, have made a travesty of these laws, the report alleges. Its authors propose two new bills which would, they believe, send a clear message indicating that pimps who traffic in sex workers will not get light punishments. Testimony provided by sex workers and minors who appeared before the Knesset committee detailed the abusive, criminal aspects of trafficking. After the women are purchased, they have to "buy back" their freedom, and face constant threats, coercion and rape. Among other abuses, their passports are taken from them. A sex worker, the report reveals, has ten to fifteen clients a day, and earns NIS 120 from each client, with pimps taking a comparable sum for each client. Committee chairperson Zahave Gal-On, MK (Meretz) said the panel's two proposed bills are designed both to reduce abuses in Israel, and to ensure that Israel is removed from the U.S. State Department's list of the second worst group of trafficking offenders. In a July 2001 report, the State Department included Israel on a black list of states that fail to comply with the minimum criteria enforced by U.S. law to prevent human trafficking. Israel faced a threat of economic sanctions as a result of this ranking. Then, as a result of legislation promoted by the Knesset special committee, and by various public groups, Israel's listing on the State Department's 2002 report improved somewhat, being ranked among the second worst trafficking offenders."

"A 29-year-old woman who had sex with a teenage boy receiving religious instructions in the Jewish faith from her husband was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court. Marni Nasia-Rubin, the estranged wife of the cantor at Congregation Etz Chayim, 3853 Woodley Rd., was sentenced by Judge Ronald Bowman. She was convicted Sept. 10 of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Nasia-Rubin, who had no prior criminal history, could have been placed on community control. The maximum sentence for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor is five years. Nasia-Rubin seemed stunned as Judge Bowman told her the sentence. She sobbed throughout the hearing, and looked tearfully at her mother and other family members as deputies placed her in handcuffs. In apologizing before sentencing, she said her actions caused her to lose her husband of eight years and custody of their daughter. She said she was shunned by the congregation, which was an important part of her life during her marriage to the cantor ... Authorities said Nasia-Rubin initiated a sexual relationship with the 15-year-old boy while he was receiving instructions in Judaism from her husband, Evan Rubin. The couple is now separated. Judge Bowman said the case generated more letters than any other during his 16 years on the bench. He said as the wife of the cantor, she must be held to a higher standard. A jail sentence was appropriate because of the victim’s age, the psychological harm it caused, and the use of her position within the congregation to facilitate the crime, the judge said. The relationship, which was consensual, began about May 24 and continued through mid-July, when the victim’s mother confronted the defendant."

The streets of Italy are lined with Romanian and Moldovan teenagers. Other serious offenders include Greece, Turkey and South Korea, while some of the "Natashas" end up in Toronto, Chicago or Los Angeles. Among Malarek's most shocking claims is that on a per capita basis the two countries with the most voracious appetites for Eastern European women are Bosnia and Israel. Prostitution in Bosnia sprang up to serve the United Nations troops and international aid workers who flooded into the country at the end of the war in former Yugoslavia. Malarek slams home the irony of these supposed emissaries of civilization feeding a barbaric industry with descriptions of 60-year-old U.S. military officers showing up at social events with their 14-year-old sex slaves. UN police demand "freebies" in return for curtailing raids on brothels packed with UN soldiers. Malarek documents how attempts to clean up the Bosnian cesspool have been blocked by UN brass and the U.S. private security firm contracted to stock the UN police. He discovers similar conditions on a visit to Kosovo. In Israel, it is common to blame rampant prostitution on foreign guest workers. But Malarek argues that these men lack the money to buy sex. The Israeli "Natashas," smuggled in via Egypt, service an estimated one million men a month. Many of the johns are Orthodox Jews. "A paediatrician was arrested after thousands of images of child pornography were found on his computers, federal prosecutors said on Monday. Dr Marc Watzman, 37, allegedly also had a hidden panel in his car that contained drugs such as morphine, compounds used to induce unconsciousness and a substance used to induce temporary muscular paralysis. Watzman was taken into custody on Saturday after agents searched his Chicago apartment. He was charged with possession of child pornography. He has not been accused of trying to use the drugs on anyone. Laptop containing 3 000 to 5 000 images of sexually explicit pictures A bail hearing was scheduled for Monday afternoon. Agents said they found a desktop computer in Watzman's apartment with about 40 images of child pornography and more than 200 000 erased images. They also seized a laptop containing 3 000 to 5 000 images of sexually explicit pictures of children, authorities said. Watzman worked at Edward Hospital in Naperville. A resume discovered by investigators indicated that Watzman also has worked at several other hospitals around the country, authorities said."

"Three high school students were expelled for making a sexually explicit video that was distributed around their private school. The video was made last spring by a sophomore girl and two junior boys, who were not identified by officials with Milken Community High School. Two of the three students involved thought the video was recorded only for a small group of friends, said school head Rennie Wrubel. "They thought they were just doing it for fun," Wrubel said. "And then it showed up in school." The video was discovered by parents and the school when a boy who watched it told his parents last month. Wrubel said all known copies have since been destroyed. "Milken Community High School is facing a series of complex issues and emotions following the administration’s discovery a few weeks ago that three students had filmed sexually explicit videos and then shared them with other students. The three students, two boys and a girl in 10th and 11th grades, were expelled. Parents and teachers were devastated to learn of the incident, which follows two scandals last year, one in which a student hacked into computers to erase a senior’s SAT score, and another in which a girl left the school after allegations of promiscuity damaged her reputation. The events have raised questions about whether it is realistic or fair to hold students at a Jewish high school to a different standard than the society at large. "Children will be children, and some children make some terrible choices," said Rennie Wrubel, head of school at Milken, which is associated with Stephen S. Wise Temple. Wrubel said that while students are given the tools to make ethical decisions, the adolescent drive and societal influences can present formidable obstacles. "I think what you have when you come to a Jewish day school is the opportunity for your children each and every day to be discussing values and ethics and morals" ... The school, with 834 students in grades 7-12, has responded to the latest incident with an aggressive openness, holding an assembly for parents last Thursday, having continuing coffees with parents and dialoging with students in Jewish studies classes and in meetings with faculty advisers ... Administrators found out about the videos about three weeks ago when parents came forward saying their child had viewed the DVD on a school computer. The school interviewed students who had reportedly viewed the DVD, and later the three who were in the film. All three admitted their involvement. Roger Fuller, the upper-school principal, and Jonathan Cassie, the 11th-grade dean, conducted the interviews with parents present, and no one from the administration viewed the videos. Since the case involves minors, law enforcement officials were called in, though Wrubel declined to say which agencies were involved, fearing it could impede the investigation. Wrubel said the school has corroborated the existence of two videos and possibly a third involving one of the students. The school does not know how many copies were made. While it is believed the DVDs were only shared with a select group of students, Wrubel said there were unverified rumors that the video has been posted on the Internet. The videos were taped in May and June of last year. Wrubel said that many students had heard about it, but not seen it. Milken, a school that fosters open communication between faculty and students, is trying to figure out how so many kids knew for so long without coming forward ... Teachers let the kids’ emerging emotions and thoughts guide the discussion, but they also tried to help them stay rooted in core Jewish values, according to Rabbi Gordon Bernat-Kunin, rabbinic director of the high school ..."In the end, the sexual decision making is theirs — they have autonomy — but we are trying our best to create a conversation in which that decision making is done in the context of Jewish sources, Jewish values and Jewish ideals," Bernat-Kunin said."

"I wanted to find out just how difficult it is to purchase young Slavic women for the sex trade. It is, as I discovered, really quite easy. All that's needed is a connection and cold hard cash. The meeting took place in an apartment in Ottawa, Canada's capital city, on a brisk, snowy night in early January 2003. I was a bit nervous. The man I was to meet was no ordinary low-level thug. Ludwig Fainberg is a notorious Israeli mobster with a hair-trigger temper and a penchant for extreme violence. According to FBI documents, he was the middleman for an international drugs and weapons smuggling conspiracy linking Colombian drug lords with the Russian Mafia in Miami. Fainberg's claim to fame was that in the mid-1990s, he ventured onto a high-security naval base in the far northern reaches of Russia. His mission was to negotiate the purchase of a Russian Cold War-era diesel submarine -- complete with a retired naval captain and a twenty-five-man crew -- for the Columbian cocaine cartel. The price tag: a cool $5.5 million. The vessel was to be used to smuggle tons of white powder along the California coast. The deal fell through. From 1990 until he was arrested and charged in Miami in February 1997 for smuggling and racketeering, Fainberg ran an infamous strip club called Porky's. The pink neon club on the fringe of Miami International Airport was a magnet for Russian hoods and sleazy East European émigrés with misbegotten fortunes and visions of untapped criminal proceeds. Fainberg's rise through ROC [Russian organized crime] ranks is the stuff of Hollywood B-movies ... He settled in the Brighton Beach area of Brooklyn, which had become the seat of the Organizatsiya, as the Russian mob is often called. There he linked up with the mob and specialized in arson -- torching businesses competing with those that were Russian owned. 1990 he moved to Miami to run Porky's. Nine years later he was convicted on racketeering charges and sentenced to thirty-seven months in prison. Since he had already spent thirty months in jail awaiting trial, Fainberg was deported to Israel. The next year he turned up in Canada with dreams of making it rich in the flesh trade. ... "You can call me Tarzan," he began as he burst back into the room. With a proud boyish grin, he tossed me one of his business cards. The cover of the custom-made two-fold card sported the caricature of a mop-topped muscular man under the name of Porky's. The inside featured a cartoon of an ample nude woman bending over in knee-high stiletto-heeled boots. Underneath was his name -- "Tarzan Da Boss" -- and on the opposite side "Welcome to Planet Sex, Land of Fantasy." According to Fainberg, he was nicknamed Tarzan because he once sported a wild mane of hair and acted as though he was straight out of a jungle ... Fainberg relishes putting women in their place. In one violent incident in Miami, undercover agents with the FBI and U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency watched from a safe distance as he chased a stripper out of Porky's and slammed her head repeatedly against the door of his Mercedes until the car was covered. In another episode, he beat a dancer in the parking lot outside the club and then made her eat gravel ... His Canadian dream was to open a strip club in Gatineau, Quebec. The club, across the bridge from the nation's capital, would feature imported talent -- Russian and Ukrainian strippers and lap dancers. When I met with him he was shopping for a Canadian partner and trolling for an infusion of cash. ... "You don't have a problem with pushing women who are absolutely destitute into prostitution?" [I said] "Look, that's what they can offer. Life is a business. It's a trade. You want to give something for nothing? You can help once or twice. But then ten, twenty or forty times? For that you want to get something in return." "What kind of money are we talking here?" I asked. "How much will it cost to bring a woman over, and what kind of profit can be made?" "If it is run the proper way, the clean way, you can have a good clientele and make a lot of money. You can buy a woman for $10,000 and you can make your money back in a week if she is pretty and she is young. Then everything else is profit."

"A Des Moines orthodox synagogue has canceled the appearance of a prominent New York rabbi scheduled to speak this weekend, after the Des Moines Jewish community was barraged with e-mails suggesting the guest speaker had a history of child abuse. Rabbi Ari Sytner of Beth El Jacob Synagogue had invited Rabbi Ephraim Bryks of Richmond Hill, N.Y., to speak at an event today. Bryks had spoken twice before in Des Moines at Sytner's invitation. Members of a victims advocacy network found the announcement on DesMoinesRegister.com and sent messages to the newspaper and members of the Iowa Jewish community, said a member of that network. Bryks would not speak to a Register reporter Thursday, but in a May article in a New York newspaper denied the allegations, which are more than 20 years old. Despite the fact that he's never been charged with child abuse, Bryks said in the article that the allegations are like a ghost trailing him from city to city, school to school. ... One of the early e-mails came from the executive director and founder of The Awareness Center, an international organization dedicated to advocacy and education on sexual abuse in Jewish communities. Founder Victoria Polin said Bryks is one of about 100 alleged abusers whose names are posted on the center's Web site. "Pedophilia has no religion," Polin said. "Some Jewish communities are 30 years behind the times in terms of addressing sexual abuse. In some Orthodox communities, they do not watch TV or read the newspapers. All they know is what the rabbi tells them. Someone has to speak out because nobody listens to the victims." The allegations stem from a period in the late 1980s when Bryks was the leader at a Winnipeg, Canada, Jewish day school and congregation, according to The Jewish Tribune, a publication of B'nai Brith Canada. According to various media reports, Bryks was accused of abusing five Winnipeg students, including a 17-year-old boy who committed suicide in 1994 after talking about the alleged abuse with his parents and police. A 1988 report by the government agency, Winnipeg South Child and Family Services on a 14-year-old girl's allegations, said there was no evidence to support a finding of criminal wrongdoing, but said Bryks' interaction with female students was inappropriate. A year later, parents of a young boy took a sex abuse complaint to Winnipeg police. The allegations were investigated, but there was insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges, according to a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation documentary. Bryks left Canada in 1990, relocating in New York, where the allegations blocked his hiring by at least one congregation and forced his ouster from at least one other, according to the New York newspaper. Attempts have been made to remove Bryks from the Queens, N.Y., Va'ad Harabonim, a council of rabbis that makes important decisions in the borough. Earlier this year, Bryks resigned from the Rabbinical Council of America under criticism. In June, the 1,200-member Rabbinical Council voted to report acts or suspicions of child abuse to the police, a break from a longstanding practice of protecting errant rabbis rather than reporting them to civil authorities, according to reports in The Jewish Week newspaper."

Leadership crisis erupts in Prague after porn scandal at Jewish school,

"A crisis involving pornography that has engulfed Prague’s only Jewish school has thrown the leadership of the city’s Jewish community into disarray. Community representatives voted 13-11 on Tuesday to remove the principal of the Lauder Jewish community school from her post following a fight over the discovery of pornography hidden on the school’s Internet server. The principal, Vera Dvorakova, is bring dismissed for firing a senior teacher in connection with the discovery, despite a lack of concrete evidence of his involvement. The meeting also voted to hold early elections next year for a new Jewish parliament, the body that elects officials in the community. Insiders say the unexpected move was a direct attack on the leadership of Tomas Jelinek, who won the chairmanship in 2001 on a pledge to bring the 1,500-strong community into the modern age. The decision to hold early elections comes after months of strife at the community-run Lauder school, which houses both a high school and an elementary school. Teachers and students have staged repeated protests over the appointment of Dvorakova, a former head of the Jewish community’s secretarial department. Community insiders say the scandal at the school unleashed feelings of discontent with the community’s leadership. “This is very unfortunate, but it has developed into two groups: those who are more or less for Mr. Jelinek and those who are more or less against him,” one senior community figure said. “I am very worried that this could even lead to the collapse of the community” ... More than 20 teachers on the school’s staff of 28 went on strike earlier this month to protest the firing of a senior teacher for the pornography find. The material was found some weeks ago by the school’s new Web site administrator. The striking teachers claimed that their colleague had nothing to do with the material and that a Web site administrator previously connected to the school had claimed responsibility for the pornography. Police are investigating the find, which involves sexually explicit images downloaded as far back as December. “Whatever their reasons may have been, those teachers and parents behind the protests really damaged the name of the community. Their actions were absolutely irresponsible,” Kraus said. Leo Pavlat, the adviser in the Czech Republic to the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, which funds the school, said he hoped the school would return to normal as soon as possible. “The main mission of the foundation is to concentrate on lessons and education in accordance with the Jewish spirit,” Pavlat said."

"A prominent pro-European and leader of the Greens in the European Parliament, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, defended on this date his publication in 1976 of an article in which he wrote of his sexual experiences with children in a Kindergarten he used to run in Frankfurt in the 1970s. "I really felt that the little girls, from the age of five, had already learned how to lead me on, to flirt. It was incredible. Most of the time I was disarmed by it," he wrote. "Several times certain children opened the flies of my trousers and started to tickle me. I reacted differently each time, according to the circumstances... But when they insisted on it, I then caressed them." Responding to the republication of these passages of the article in The Observer, Cohn-Bendit said that his article was part of the sexual revolution which, together with the political revolution, he was then fomenting. He declared furiously: "I will not allow myself to be assassinated in public. I am not a pedophile, and I never have been." He claimed that the experiences recounted in the article were in fact fantasies. There is, needless to say, no suggestion of this in the original article itself. Cohn-Bendit added that some 20 parents of children in his care at the day center, and many of the children themselves - now in their 30s - had written an open letter in his support."

"A woman in her mid 20s was born and raised in a Muslim village in remote Uzbekistan. While she was still a teenager, her father arranged her marriage to a man from the village who already had one wife. Before she knew it, she was pregnant, not once, but twice.“M” suffered physical abuse, and eventually left her violent husband while still pregnant with the second child; she went off to live with her ailing, unemployed father. Caring for the second child, she lacked money and work; the family faced unbearable financial stress.Then M. heard from a woman in thevillage about a line of work in which a lot of money could be made by convincing men to drink a lot of alcohol. This work is done overseas, she was told. It’s easy work, and yields hundreds of dollars in profit – sometimes $1,000 a month.Where M. comes from, a villager who earns $20 a month is considered well off. With her family on the edge of dire poverty, she agreed to try the line of work, even though her oldest son was still a child, and the younger one was just three months old. Her plan was to work for a short time, and then return to her chiildren. When she arrived in Moscow, from where she was to depart to work in Israel, she was imprisoned in a room and raped. She was informed that she would be brought to Israel to work as a prostitute. Later, M. testified that when she discovered what was happening to her, she urinated in her pants out of fear. After arriving in Israel, she refused to comply with clients’ requests, and wept constantly. She fled several times, only to be found in each instance and returned to work; in the end, her captors gave up on her, and put her out on the streets. She turned to the police for help, and was detained for illegal residence in the country. Recently, after several months of detention, she was deported back to Uzbekistan. During the past year, some 20 women from Uzbekistan managed to escape from slave traffickers, or were detained by immigration police; all 20 await expulsion from the country. At the Isha L’Isha Haifa Feminist Center, which is sponsoring a project on the struggle to end sex trafficking in Israel, experts believe that some 300 sex slaves who were brought from Uzbekistan currently work in Israel.“Based on meetings with women in the field, we have found that in recent months a new export route has opened up, running between Uzbekistan and Israel,” Isha L’Isha project director Rita Heiken says. Sex traffickers in Israel use a number of import routes. Every few months, a route originating in a new country opens up; suddenly a number of women from the same country who never before set foot in a brothel turn up in Israel. Police-men and social activists have monitored these import lines, particularly since Israel passed an anti-trafficking law in 2000. “After the anti-trafficking law was passed, and after we started to enforce it, we found in Tel Aviv massage parlors alarge number of women who had been brought here from Russia and Ukraine,”says police superintendent Pini Aviram, who heads a police unit that deals with crime originating in Russia. A year later, the import route was altered, Aviram explains – a large proportion of sex workers in Tel Aviv, particularly in the area of the old central bus station, came from Moldavia. Isha L’Isha’s Heiken continues: “Starting in June-July 2002, we started to find Muslim women from Uzbekistan. It has become clear over the past year that this is a very busy import line.” In recent months, activists from Isha L’Isha and police officers have started to notice sex workers who have been brought here from Georgia, Kazakhstan, and other countries. “Wherever there are economic troubles, sex traffickers will find women who agree to do this sort of work,” says Heiken. Police officers claim that most of the women who are brought to Israel know why they have been brought here. Yet it is very difficult to support a theory holding that the sex workers labor by consent, the policemen admit, “in view of their intolerable conditions and the horrific exploitation.”While social activists have agreed that many of the sex workers are aware of the purpose of their arrival in Israel, all concur that the situation is different with the women from Uzbekistan. “In the case of women from Uzbekistan, there is a higher percentage of women who really didn’t know why they were brought here,”concludes attorney Naomi Levenkron, who coordinates a Hebrew University of Jerusalem program for the struggle against trafficking in women. “This is probably the reason why the Uzbek women represent a large portion of the women who dare to escape from the pimps, and turn to the police.” According to a survey sponsored by the Isha L’Isha project, some 50 percent of the women from Uzbekistan did not know in advance that they would work in prostitution in Israel. One woman close to the issue of trafficking explains that the“women from Uzbekistan are not suckers; when they discover that instead of working as waitresses or as domestic servants, they are to be used as prostitutes, they struggle against this fate with all their might.” “Uzbekistan is still virgin ground from which one can import women easily,” explains attorney Levenkron. “Economic distress there is acute ... Coming from a pious, conservative background, women from Uzbekistan are often overwhelmed by their encounter with the sex industry in a foreign country. As if their brutal treatment as sex workers were not enough, those who manage to escape are forced to endure long waiting periods in detention beforebeing sent back to their home country. ... Moldavia, police sources explain, became two years ago a major supplier of sex slaves largely because major traffickers who were born there immigrated to Israel .... Public officials in Moldavia have over the past two years made an increased effort to stop the export of women to Israel. Recently a new import line originating from Kazakhstan has opened up."

Abortion physician guilty of sex abuse,

"Dr. Brian Finkel, the outspoken gun-toting Phoenix abortion doctor, was convicted Tuesday on 22 counts of sexually abusing patients over the past 17 years. Finkel, 54, was found not guilty on 34 more counts, including six of the more serious charges of sexual assault. The jury, which heard three months of testimony, couldn't reach a verdict on four sex-abuse charges. Prosecutors said they likely won't be retried. "We got you," Ebone Jordan, 24, of Gilbert, said after the verdicts were read. Finkel was found not guilty of sexually abusing Jordan when she was a patient. But she said she was satisfied with the verdicts because they were enough to imprison the once high-profile abortion doctor. Victims in the packed courtroom applauded as Finkel was led away by sheriff's deputies. "We were trying to put a scumbag behind bars," Jordan said. "I feel great." Taken to Maricopa County jail to await sentencing, the usually talkative Finkel refused requests to be interviewed. Jurors also refused to comment, so it was unclear why they convicted Finkel on some charges but not others. Cindi Nannetti, one of two deputy county attorneys who prosecuted Finkel, said it was a difficult case because jurors had to decide whether Finkel's touching was out of bounds or part of a normal medical exam. Some of the cases were also years old ... Finkel, who performed more than 30,000 abortions over the past 20 years, had become a national figure in the 1990s. He often appeared on network talk shows to denounce the growing violence among abortion protesters. A beaming Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley praised Finkel's 32 accusers for having the courage to tell their stories of sexual abuse in Finkel's abortion clinic. "A doctor who had abused the trust of his patients by sexually abusing them will no longer do that again," Romley said. During Finkel's three-month trial, a parade of victims told of sexual abuse that included twisting their nipples, kissing them or fondling them inappropriately during exams. The sexual assault charges of which Finkel was acquitted involved allegations of digital penetration. Finkel could spend a maximum of 75 years behind bars."

Questions the Documentary Never Asks Framing the Friedmans,

"Capturing the Friedmans" is Andrew Jarecki's documentary about a child sex abuse scandal that shook Long Island, New York in the late 1980s. Arnold Friedman and his youngest son Jesse were accused of hundreds of cases of assault and sexual abuse of minors. They pled guilty; Arnold committed suicide in prison, and Jesse served 13 years in Dannemora correctional facility. Unfortunately, the documentary sheds little light on these events and refuses to answer the questions whether real crimes were committed and the right people punished, or whether as seems just as likely, police, psychologists, lawyers and judges went badly astray in a miscarriage of justice. It seems plain that Arnold Friedman received child pornography through the mail, and this is what kicked off an investigation into the computer classes he ran out of his home. His ex-wife Elaine says he confessed in therapy to molesting two boys who were not his students, at a different place and time. Arnold may have had sex as a child with his younger brother, but his younger brother doesn't remember any of this. His son Jesse's lawyer alleges that Arnold told him he was a pedophile. But Arnold wasn't indicted for those sex crimes, as far as we can tell from Jarecki's movie. Rather, Great Neck, Long Island police charged him with conducting a continual man-boy orgy in his house over a period of four years ... You would expect the documentary to take off after this problem: "how is it that no one complained during four years of group rape?" But that question would be either too hard or too easy to try to answer. Instead, Jarecki centers on the spectacle of pain. The Friedman family tore itself apart under unfathomable pressure, and as their father was about to be sentenced David, the eldest son, began recording the horror on his video camera. Dysfunctional doesn't cover it: the sons pile on their mother in a blamefest. She's faced with the agonizing choice of standing by a man who has lied to her for decades about his sexual predilections, or breaking up a vulnerable family. Either way, the family is doomed in the face what appears to be police and judicial railroading, but at least two of the sons decide it's all her fault, not Dad's. Then there are all kinds of unanswered questions about the brothers' versions of what happened, and their motivations for participating in the film. Their versions of events change until we're left with only miserable sympathy for Elaine Friedman and no respect for anyone except invisible Seth, the middle brother who refused to participate in the documentary project ... Just how much Jarecki confuses things by his focus on the family is clear from the creepy web site he's built to promote his movie (www.capturingthefriedmans.com). It takes the form of a family album with pages of snapshots devoted to each miserable member, albeit in supposedly happier days."

"Yeshiva University, defending itself against a lawsuit by an Israeli religious academy with which it severed ties, is countersuing the Israeli school, alleging that it "utterly refused to protect" Y.U.'s exchange students from a rabbi affiliated with the academy. The Israeli school, Derech Etz Chaim yeshiva in Jerusalem, accused the university in a federal suit filed last spring of "disparagement" and breach of contract for severing ties based on allegedly false concerns about the school and the controversial rabbi, Matis Weinberg. The university's countersuit, filed in the same Manhattan federal court last month, claims that the Israeli school and its dean had fraudulently "misrepresented" their connection to Weinberg. According to Y.U.'s countersuit, the dean of the Israeli school, Rabbi Aharon Katz, was aware of at least two allegations of sexual misconduct made against Weinberg. The Y.U. countersuit claims that such allegations were brought to Katz's attention by a student who attended a yeshiva run by Weinberg in California more than 20 years ago and more recently by a student at Derech Etz Chaim. The Israeli school denied the accusations in a reply filed in court last month. The university severed ties last February to Derech Etz Chaim, which had been a participant in the Yeshiva University Israel Program. The university explained in a letter to parents that the decision was based on a "review" of the school's "educational standards and learning environment." The Jerusalem school charged in its complaint, dated May 30, that the university had "disparaged" the school by telling callers who asked about the severing of ties that Weinberg "was creating a 'cult-like atmosphere' at DEC" and "had been accused of engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct" with a student. The school said the charges against Weinberg were false and were "not properly investigated by Y.U." The suit also alleged that Yeshiva University defamed Katz by claiming he had prior knowledge of Weinberg's alleged history. In its countersuit, the university denies making either claim to the public at the time."

"A male stripper from Tel Aviv was in court yesterday to extend his remand on charges of soliciting dozens of young girls for NIS 50 a time to beat and abuse him for sexual pleasure. "I've done so much in my life and have so many girls that I was looking for new thrills," the 31-year-old stripper told police. A few days ago a school principal reported to police that a girl was meeting a man in a park who was paying her for sexual services. Some girls involved in the case are from the school. The police asked a girl who was in touch with the suspect to arrange an assignation. When he arrived, he was arrested. "In his house we found a list of dozens of names of girls he used to meet," said Chief Superintendent Irit Amar, head of the Ayalon sub-district police youth squad. The suspect usually called one of the girls, or they would call him if they needed money, and they would meet in public parks in the Holon and Bat Yam area. "He would ask them to beat him and swear at him - like `you're an idiot, you've done bad things' - until he was sexually satisfied," Amar said. She said the suspect did not use force or threaten the girls and they had all cooperated willingly. But he was arrested for performing indecent acts in public and also because he did it a number of times in front of girls aged under 14. His remand was extended to tomorrow."

"TEENAGE girls are being kidnapped and smuggled into Britain to be sold as sex slaves for £3,000 each. The terrified youngsters are held prisoner in brothels where they are forced into prostitution by their masters. Sunday Mirror investigators were offered the chance to buy 100 of the girls - three of them aged just 15. The sordid trade centres on the historic Czech capital of Prague - a thriving destination for Brit tourists on sex holidays. It is rapidly becoming the sex tourist capital of Europe, fuelled by the increase in cheap direct flights. Our investigation follows the sentencing this week of the Albanian Mr Big behind the Eastern European sex trafficking trade in the UK. Illegal immigrant Luan Plakici, 26, was jailed for 10 years at Wood Green Crown Court in London for smuggling up to 60 women into Britain and forcing them into prostitution. Evil Plakici beat his victims, allowed them to be raped and even caged his 16-year-old wife in a brothel. But we can reveal that rival gangs are already vying to fill the vacuum left by Plakici's capture. Our investigators infiltrated a Russian Mafia gang that offered to supply 100 girls - kidnapped from the former Soviet Union - to massage parlours in Britain every month. A Russian godfather called Ima told our undercover reporters: "We can send girls to Britain. You like Russian girls? We send each one for six months and you pay 5,000 euros (£3,000) each." Like Plakici, the Russian mafia uses Prague as a staging post on the smuggling route between East and West. Our investigators were shown around one of their brothels in Prague and a safe house where girls are held against their will before being sent to brothels in Europe. The Russians told us that any of the miserable-looking girls we were shown were available to be smuggled into Britain for the right price. In the first brothel - a dimly lit loft conversion called Dessert in the tourist quarter - there were 12 semi-naked girls sitting on wooden chairs. The guide told us that three of the prostitutes were just 15. The safehouse - a three-storey villa on the outskirts of Prague - was prison to a further 20 prostitutes. Our investigators were taken there in a blacked-out Russian mafia Mercedes driven by an armed bodyguard. After running a background check on our men, a mafia boss called Andrei agreed to talk to us. He said: "They (the girls) can't escape. If they cause problems, we will hurt their families in Russia. "Russian girls are the most obedient. We can smuggle people into the EU as dancers or waitresses. That's how we get work permits." Another boss called Yusef added: "These girls have been in Prague for six months and I don't have problem. I have 50 girls in Prague now. We control the business here." Yusef, who wore expensive designer clothes and a ski hat with a Union Jack, flashed a wad of 14,000 euros (£9,500). Smiling he said: "That's the money I make in one night in Prague. But I have escort businesses in Germany and Israel. "London is what we want - there's a lot of money there." In a sinister reference to the Albanian mafia who control up to 70 per cent of the vice trade in London's Soho, Yusef grinned: "The Albanians? They are not a problem. "We remember the Albanians who have done business here. We control Prague now. "Each girl is 5,000 euros. Once you have paid, she is yours for as long as you want. "After six months, if you want to get new ones, you'll have to pay 5,000 euros again." In the safehouse, Yusef violently grabbed a beautiful dark-haired girl and groped her breast. The frightened girl smiled uncomfortably. Yusef said: "See how they respect me. They will do anything I say. We can provide girls cheaper than anyone else." He then introduced us to three Russian girls - Viktoria, Palina and Daniela - who, they said, were their biggest earners and could be ours to own for the right price. At a meeting at the five-star Intercontinental Hotel in Prague, Andrei explained the gang travelled freely to London, using Israeli passports. He claimed he was a Russian Jew who had got the passport legally. Andrei added: "I don't need a visa to go to London with an Israeli passport. I have another three passports from different countries." Andrei boasted how the gang has very strong links with the Russian mafia in London. He said: "Nothing will stop us. We're not afraid of anyone." The following day, the Russian mafia emailed our investigators details of their website containing explicit pictures of 15 prostitutes available for trafficking to the UK. The website listed details of their brothels in Prague, rates and a menu of sexual services. One hour of "usual sex, oral without a condom and a striptease" cost £30. The United Nations recently named Prague as the hub of the sex slave industry in Europe, where prostitutes are held captive before being shipped into Western Europe. And last week, an Interpol report predicted that the entry of the Czech Republic into the EU next year would lead to a dramatic rise in human trafficking as border controls disappear altogether."

"Brian Finkel, a once prominent Phoenix abortion doctor, was sentenced to more than 34 years in prison Friday for sexually abusing patients over a span of nearly two decades in his high-profile practice. Finkel was also ordered to register as a sex offender and placed on lifetime probation should he serve out his 34¾ -year prison sentence. A jury convicted the 54-year-old physician last month on 22 counts of sex abuse. It also acquitted him of 34 more counts, including six of the more serious charges of sexual assault. The sentencing comes after three months of emotion-packed testimony from 32 victims who said the doctor pinched their breasts, or kissed or fondled them during examinations. He denied the charges. Jurors deliberated 15 days before reaching their verdict. They refused to talk about how they reached the verdict. Finkel, who performed more than 30,000 abortions over the past 20 years, had become a national figure in the 1990s. He often appeared on network talk shows denouncing the growing violence of abortion protesters, who he compared to terrorists. He wore a bullet-proof vest and patrolled his Phoenix abortion clinic with a gun, saying they were necessary to protect himself and his clients from attacks."

"Two men who were arrested last week on suspicion of importing women from Eastern Europe to work as prostitutes in Israel will appear in the Tel Aviv District Court for a remand hearing Tuesday. Stanislav Kuperman and Boris Shimshishvilli were arrested as part of an operation launched by Tel Aviv detectives, in which an officer was sent undercover to purchase women over the telephone. Several weeks ago, police arrested a man known by the nickname Bijou, who had been a police informer for several years, and more recently had started trading in women. Under questioning, Bijou gave police the telephone number of an Egyptian Bedouin from whom he had purchased women to work at the several brothels he operated in Tel Aviv. "When we called the number, a man calling himself Ahmed answered and said that he had seven women waiting to be sold for work in Israel," said the head of the police's Russian crime division, Superintendent Pini Aviram. In fact, it later turned out that the women were "surplus," after the person who had placed the original order failed to contact the Bedouin dealer. "One of our detectives, who passed himself off as a potential buyer, entered into telephone negotiations with Ahmed over the price of the women," said Aviram. The dealer wanted between $5,500 and $6,000 for each girl, depending on how attractive she was, and said that he would determine how much each one was worth. "It is common for Russian women to fetch the highest price, while Uzbeki women fetch the lowest," Aviram added."

Dorit Brightman of the ELEM Youth in Distress non-profit organization told the committee that many of the minors are forced into prostitution because of the dire economic situation, and some have even died as a result. The ELEM representatives also told the MKs that two or three children are known to each local authority to be involved in prostitution. "In addition, there are numerous youths who offer sex services in exchange for money and thus there are over 1,000 youths involved in prostitution," the representatives said."

"A videotape of an underage girl exposing her breasts is not child pornography, a judge decided Tuesday in a criminal case against the producer of the "Girls Gone Wild" video series. Joe Francis, 30, and several of his employees were arrested at Panama City Beach while filming during spring break last April. Bay County sheriff's deputies charged Francis with racketeering related to prostitution and other crimes, based largely on videotapes of girls under 18. Many of the 43 counts he faces hinge on what conduct is considered illegal or pornographic. "This ruling shows that the entire fabric of that claim is wrong," said defense lawyer Aaron Dyer of Los Angeles. Dyer said he expected the ruling to undermine at least 90 percent of the case. Circuit Judge Michael C. Overstreet made his decision in ordering that defense lawyers be allowed to copy tape confiscated during a search of Francis' rented condominium last spring. Prosecutors had tried to prevent the copying on grounds the videotape showing a girl "flashing" her breasts was illegal child pornography. Florida's child pornography law makes the depiction of "sexual conduct" illegal and defines that term to include physical contact. There was no physical contact in the video. State Attorney Jim Appleman did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Prosecutors contend Francis and his video crew enticed girls they knew were underage to expose themselves. The defendants deny the allegation and say the girls had lied about their ages. Francis owns Mantra Entertainment Inc. of Santa Monica, Calif., which produces and distributes the videos."

"A Queens man, working for U.S. Immigration, has been arrested for harassing a Korean woman in Flushing, who was set to testify against her employers for involuntary servitude. Nisim Yushuvayev of Flushing was arrested last Friday for obstructing an investigation and prosecution on allegations of involuntary servitude. He was set for an appearance in Brooklyn federal court. Yushuvayev admitted to investigators that he helped Wun Kang and his wife, Kyongia, of Port Jefferson Station, who were previously charged in federal court with debt servitude regarding hostesses they used in their Flushing bar, The Renaissance, at 35-28 154th Street. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of New York, Mrs. Kang traveled to South Korea, where she recruited two women to work as hostesses at the Flushing bar. She allegedly promised them high wages and that their work would not involve prostitution. But once the women came here, the Kangs kept all their earnings and tried to force them to work as prostitutes. The couple told the women they owed them $20,000 and could work it off quicker by serving as prostitutes for them ... According to the federal complaint, last November, Yushuvayev entered the victim’s residence, showed a badge and with the help of a translator, told her he was there to deport her for illegally working in this country. It is alleged that he then told the woman to get into a livery cab with him and escorted her to Kennedy Airport. She was able to escape and authorities later found the woman’s passport in Yushuvayev’s home. A little over a week later, Kang was arrested and charged by the Queens District Attorney’s Office with witness tampering. He then admitted that he had sent Yushuvayev to the victim’s home to coerce her to leave the United States so she could not testify against him. “Human trafficking is an affront to everything we stand for as Americans. The defendants in this case profited from human trafficking and an officer of the law violated his oath and betrayed our trust by selling his badge to protect them,” said U.S. Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf. If convicted on the federal charges, the Kangs and Yushuvayev face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a fine of $250,000."

"Somewhere in this beleaguered town, Palestinian computer whizzes from a company called Earth Station V have launched a high-tech assault on the U.S. entertainment industry, with a defiant message for those trying to stop the downloading of music and movies: "Resistance is futile." That, at least, is what the company wants people to believe, and it has cooked up an elaborate ruse that has made Earth Station V and its claim to hide downloaders' identities the buzz of the moment in the online universe. But seemingly no one in this town of 34,000 -- the scene of some of the heaviest fighting in the three-year-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict -- has heard of Earth Station V. Computer salesmen and technicians, Internet providers, Internet cafe workers and customers and community and Palestinian militant leaders said they knew of no one who works for the company. Questions about its founder and president, who calls himself Ras Kabir -- Arabic for "Big Head" -- drew laughter. Yet someone has gone to enormous trouble and expense to create complicated software programs and a sophisticated Web site that offers X-rated movies, long-distance calling, a dating service, the downloading of music, first-run movies and computer software -- all free and all supposedly augmented with stealth technology that hides a user's identity. And all with no advertisements or other visible means of generating revenue, despite monthly operating costs that the company says amount to $1.5 million. In recent years, downloading music has become one of the biggest and most controversial activities on the Internet -- one that many computer experts say could transform the U.S. entertainment industry. Even if laws could be written fast enough to keep up with changing technology, experts say, online file swapping and downloading are virtually unstoppable ... The company claims to have its headquarters in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to take advantage of loose Palestinian copyright and intellectual property laws that it says can keep U.S. legal hounds at bay. The real boon for Earth Station V, however, seems to be the publicity bonanza that comes from claiming that such a cutting-edge Internet company is being run by a multiethnic band of techno-rebels in besieged and impoverished Palestinian refugee camps. But the company's business and Internet paper trails don't support that claim. The West Bank and Gaza addresses the company lists for its offices don't exist, the telephone numbers don't answer, company officials refuse to meet with reporters and they communicate only by e-mails and call-backs. Reporters are not allowed to visit Earth Station V offices or talk to workers. In several telephone interviews, a spokesman for Earth Station V, Steve Taylor, said the company has about 100 employees in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. But he declined a reporter's request to visit their work sites, saying that Palestinian militant groups did not approve of Earth Station V's activities -- particularly its broadcast of pornographic movies -- and were threatening the company's operations and employees. Militants also were angry, he claimed, that the company had Jewish partners. Impermeable Internet Veil Computer sleuths have traced some of Earth Station V's Internet providers to Israel; computer experts agree that from there, the service could be routed into the Palestinian territories. But even if that is the case, experts agree, the electronic veil offered by the Internet is so impermeable that the company's employees could be sitting at desks almost anywhere in the world, while using the West Bank as their electronic address. "They are making it very difficult for anyone to find who they are, where they are and how they operate," said Ghassan Anabtawi, marketing director for Paltel, the monopoly telephone company in the Palestinian territories. Paltel has no record of providing voice or Internet service to Earth Station V. "It's something fishy and weird -- they are very professional in conning people," Anabtawi said. The company might be receiving Internet service from a Palestinian provider, he said, but none had claimed it as a client. In addition to Jenin and Gaza, said Taylor, the Earth Station V spokesman, the company has offices in the West Bank towns of Ramallah, Nablus and Bethlehem. Computer specialists in each town said they were not familiar with Earth Station V. "I've never heard of the company, and I should have heard of it," said Yahya Salqan, general secretary of the Palestinian Information Technology Association. He said he sent e-mails to the 75 members of his association asking if any knew of Earth Station V, and "nobody had." Business registration papers filed with the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah and other company documents list an Internet pornography king, Stephen Michael Cohen, as the "sole director" of Earth Station V ... ... Cohen has been listed as a fugitive from the United States since 2001 for failing to appear in a court case in which he was ordered to pay $65 million in damages for stealing the Internet domain sex.com. According to the judgment, in 1995 Cohen forged a letter by the real owner of sex.com instructing the agency that registered domains to transfer ownership to him. Cohen controlled the domain name for five years, building sex.com into what reportedly was one of world's most visited and profitable Web sites. Taylor said Earth Station V had about $1.5 million per month in operating costs but no revenues. He said the company's investors, whom he declined to name, were willing to lose money in the short term to attract users but planned to add potentially huge money-making ventures to the Web site in the near future, including online auctioning and gambling. But its biggest draw is offering a platform for Internet users to download music ... Such predictions hinge on whether Earth Station V really has found a way for users to conduct online music swapping with impunity ... Taylor, the company spokesman, said Earth Station V has roughly 710 employees in several countries, including Russia. Their software is available in 28 languages, he said, although the Web site listed only about 15, and none was Arabic, the language spoken by Palestinians. Business registration documents filed in June with the Palestinian Economy Ministry said Earth Station V had $2.75 million in start-up capital and was established to conduct "transactions in financial documents." The papers listed Rony Hanouna, the owner of several cellular telephone stores in the West Bank, as the company's representative in the West Bank town of Bethlehem. Hanouna said in an interview that he had no knowledge of Earth Station V's activities and expressed surprise that the company was conducting business, saying that as far as he knew, it existed only on paper. "American federal authorities over the weekend filed indictments against two Israeli citizens suspected of defrauding the owners of several companies of $40 million. Daniel Nishri and his brother Avner, former Israelis who now live in Belgium, were arrested on Thursday and charged with seven counts of fraud, which carry a maximum penalty of 35 years in prison. Most of the acts of fraud were committed against Ami and Sarit Shafrir, residents of Los Angeles and the owners of a number of successful companies for phone sex as well as internet dating sites, including the popular Jewish dating site J-Date. The brothers in 1999 met Sarit Shafrir, who was at the time in the process of divorcing her husband. Daniel Nishri impersonated a banker and lawyer and persuaded Shafrir to invest in fictitious companies, as he gradually gained control of the assets of five companies owned by the Shafrirs. According to the indictment, the brothers transferred the assets from the Shafrir-owned companies to their fictitious ventures, filing around 100 legal suits against Shafrir, with the aim of obtaining all of her assets."

Pimps tell of a million brothel visits a year,

"'Lots of religious men from Jerusalem enter our place. They look really embarrassed. Some ask me to close the establishment for an hour - and 20 of them turn up in a group." Thus a pimp gave evidence yesterday to a special parliamentary committee on sex trafficking. The session was devoted to pimps. Jackie Yazdi, owner of a brothel that flourished before being shut down by authorities last year, alluded to a wide variety of clients. These included husbands who come to perform types of sex acts which they are unable to pursue at home, soldiers who lack girlfriends, foreign workers, Palestinians from the territories and more. Accurate records of men who resort to sex-for-pay are hard to come by. In Israel, some estimate that there are one million visits a month to massage parlors. That figure, which will be presented today to the parliamentary committee which is headed by MK Zahava Gal-On (Meretz), is based on the following calculations: police estimate that 3,000 women have been brought to Israel as sex workers. They work 30 days a month and have at least ten clients a day. These figures do not include Israeli women who work as prostitutes; there is less information about the number of clients they have per day. The brunt of public discussion about sex trafficking focuses on the sex workers and pimps, and not on their clients. In a position paper to be submitted to the parliamentary committee today, attorney Naomi Levenkron argues that the lack of information about clients derives from a number of reasons - the sex industry depends upon client anonymity, and cultural norms regard sex purchasers as "real men" who should be given some leeway. In contrast, the pimps and sex workers who prostitute themselves are treated as the real guilty parties; that the industry would not exist were it not for the male clients is conveniently over-looked. Levenkron has led the campaign in Israel against sex trafficking for several years. Based on testimony she has culled from its victims, Levenkron concludes that the majority of their clients are Israelis. Some are regular customers."

"After a 2-1/2-year investigation in which prosecutors examined 30,000 images seized from his home, actor Paul Reubens pleaded guilty on Friday to a single charge of possessing obscene material. The children's actor, who won fame as television's "Pee-wee Herman," was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to keep away from children during that period. He also has to pay a $100 fine in what his lawyers said was a major victory. Reubens' attorney, Blair Berk, said prosecutors had dropped a more serious child pornography charge and had agreed to allow Reubens to appeal the case to a higher court. The plea deal also requires Reubens to register as a sex offender, but the case will be expunged from his record and his name removed from the state database if he finishes probation. During his probation, Reubens, 51, must avoid anyone associated with the case and receive psychological counseling for a year ... Reubens, who did not appear in Los Angeles Superior Court, said in a statement that he was pleased to have avoided "a circus-like trial" and was "disappointed any part of my art collection was ever deemed inappropriate." "These are certainly troubling times when our Attorney General Ashcroft has actually ordered the semi-nude statue of the Spirit of Justice to be covered with drapes," Reubens said. "Taking responsibility by calling a few images in this collection 'obscene' and paying a $100 fine seemed like the sanest way to make it end," he added. Prosecutor Kraft said he was "pleased" with the plea agreement and described the images underpinning the case as "photographs in magazines depicting minors engaged in sexual conduct." "We believe that Mr. Reubens was treated fairly and properly by the City Attorney's Office," Kraft said. "The disposition in this case took into account all of the facts and circumstances of the case and legal issues." Kraft said the "nonsexual" images seized from Reubens' home in November 2001 would be returned to him but materials "involving sex" would be destroyed. City Attorney's Office spokesman Eric Moses said the case was based on "170 images of minors engaged in sex conduct ... minors with genitals exposed, engaged in oral copulation, masturbation and multiple people engaging in sexual conduct."

"In the March 10 edition of Education Week, there is an article by Caroline Hendrie, “Sexual Abuse by Educators is Scrutinized,” that suggests that the degree of sexual abuse in the public schools is at a crisis level. Hofstra University professor Charol Shakeshaft was commissioned by the Bush administration to do a literature search of existing studies on this subject; this was to be the groundwork upon which a national study would be launched. She concluded that “the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests.” The article also says that there are no plans at this time to conduct the national study. Responding to this is Catholic League president William Donohue: “I have written U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige urging him to authorize a national study of the problem of sexual abuse in the public schools. I have also asked him to put Professor Charol Shakeshaft in charge of the study. The provision in the No Child Left Behind program that mandated such a study should not be dismissed by education department officials who would prefer not to deal with this issue. I have also recommended to Secretary Paige the establishment of a national database on the sexual abuse of students. “I have also written to all the state attorneys general. ‘Given that many attorneys general throughout the U.S. were impelled to subpoena the personnel files of priests,’ I said, ‘it is only just that the personnel files of teachers be subpoenaed as well. Not to do so would smack of selective indignation—even prejudice—and that is not something the citizenry would approve.’ “Where is the media in all this? Isn’t it news that the number of public school students who have been abused by a school employee is more than 100 times greater than the number of minors who have been abused by priests? All those reporters, columnists, talking heads, attorneys general, D.A.’s, psychologists and victims groups who were so quick on the draw to get priests have a moral obligation to pursue this issue to the max. If they don’t, they’re a fraud.”

"A 19 year-old youth from Jerusalem was charged on Sunday with the rape of his two sisters, aged 5 and 7, during the past year. According to the indictment, the rapes took place at the family’s residence. The suspect claimed during his interrogation that his urge overpowered him and that he couldn’t control himself "since he had never touched a woman”. Investigators have also discovered that the parents knew of the rapes after one of their victimized daughters told them. Police are still contemplating how and if to charge them. In a separate incident, Jerusalem police officers on Sunday detained a 12-year old boy from Beit Shemesh on suspicion he had raped a 4 year-old girl. Tenants of one of the city’s buildings noticed the boy bending over the girl with his pants pulled down."

"An indictment was filed yesterday in the Nazareth District against Motti Lahav, 40, from Migdal Haemek, for sodomy and sexual abuse against three youths, two males and a female, whom he may have lured in Internet chats. The police were alerted five months ago when the teenage girl from the north, filed a rape complaint against the suspect. Police discovered that Lahav's was engaged youngsters in ICQ Internet chats, presenting himself as a 20 year old. He also sent photographs showing him at half his real age. The suspect arranged to meet the girl after she broke up with her boyfriend. He turned up at her residence, and raped her on two consecutive days. Investigators established two other cases of sexual abuse against this victim. One of the teenage male victims met the suspect after Lahav promised he would find work for him as a DJ. The other youth met Lahav at a club in Haifa. In both cases Lahav allegedly sodomized and abused the victims."

"The founder of the Beit Hashanti hostel in Tel Aviv for homeless and abused teens, Ovadia Gershon, was acquitted of rape charges yesterday by the High Court of Justice. Gershon, who set up the hostel 25 years ago and was a recipient of the President's Award for Volunteerism, was convicted by a lower court some six months ago of rape and sodomy of an underage girl living at the hostel. He was then sentenced to 15 years in prison. The High Court decided to acquit Gershon. In the two-to-one decision, Justices Edmond Levy and Yaacov Turkel decided in favor of acquittal, while High Court President Aharon Barak decided against it. The girl who charged Gershon with rape suffers from Williams Disorder, a genetic disorder characterized by mild mental retardation, extreme behavior and naive perception. People with the syndrome often do not fear strangers, and it is easy to take advantage of them. The lower court's conviction, also a two-against-one decision, was based on the testimony of the girl and her mother."

In this field office in Washington, 32 prosecutors, investigators and a handful of FBI agents are spending millions of dollars to bring anti-obscenity cases to courthouses across the country for the first time in 10 years. Nothing is off limits, they warn, even soft-core cable programs such as HBO's long-running Real Sex or the adult movies widely offered in guestrooms of major hotel chains. Department officials say they will send "ripples" through an industry that has proliferated on the Internet and grown into an estimated $10 billion-a-year colossus profiting Fortune 500 corporations such as Comcast, which offers hard-core movies on a pay-per-view channel ... A recent episode of Showtime's Family Business, a reality show about Adam Glasser, an adult film director and entrepreneur in California, had him worrying about shipping his material to states more apt to prosecute. "Adult movie producers agreed to shut down sets for weeks Thursday after two performers tested positive for the virus that causes AIDS. At least 45 men and women were under voluntary quarantine because they had sex with the HIV-positive performers or their sex partners, said Sharon Mitchell of the nonprofit Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation. The first performer to test positive, whom Mitchell declined to name, was "conscientious" about having HIV tests every three weeks, she said. On Friday he tested positive for HIV and a follow-up test on Monday confirmed it, Mitchell said. Mitchell confirmed later Thursday that one of about a dozen women the performer had sex with in films also tested HIV-positive. A list of quarantined performers was placed on the Web site of the foundation, which screens about 1,200 adult movie performers a month for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. As of Thursday about a dozen adult movie companies had agreed to follow a voluntary moratorium on production until June 8, said Tim Connelly, publisher of the industry news magazine AVN. Although the quarantine is voluntary, the performers involved won't be working for at least two months, until new tests clear them, Connelly said. It would be "absolutely insane" for companies to hire them earlier, he said. Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of public health and health officer for Los Angeles County, said the agency did not consider the HIV case a threat to public health "at this point." "I think in general, they've done an appropriate job in terms of the quarantine measures taken," he said. However, the discovery shows that screening programs are not perfect and the only way to prevent AIDS "is not to have unprotected sex." Mary Carey, an adult movie star who ran for governor of California last fall, said she had not worked with the HIV-infected actor or his co-stars. However, as a precaution she was canceling a lesbian porn shoot even though she did not consider it risky. "It's very scary," she said. "This is kind of a wake-up call for everybody." It was unclear how much impact the work stoppage would have on the $4 billion to $13 billion-a-year industry, which is centered in the San Fernando Valley."
